It definitely helps to keep up on your gear. You should try not to have any gear that’s more than, say, 5 levels below you, which you probably won’t get just from drops.

Grind is still grind

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Andred.1087

Andred.1087

Trying to talk objectively about “grind” is pointless, because each person has to decide what “grind” means to them.

If you define “grind” as repetitive content, then an MMO literally cannot exist without grind. No game that requires people to continually play for long periods of time is going to be without long-term goals in the form of repeated content, because developers simply can’t create content as fast as players consume it.

If you define “grind” as repetitive content that you’re tired of doing but really want the reward for, then upon finding yourself in a grind, you should probably re-evaluate if the reward is actually worth the effort to you. If it is, keep going and don’t whine; if it’s not, get over it and go do something else.

Those of you with abundant free time and/or few responsibilities probably haven’t figured this out yet, but if you’re spending leisure time doing something you don’t like, stop!! Follow that one simple rule, and I doubt you will ever complain about “grind” again.

Andred.1087

Well what, should the game give you less stuff? I don’t imagine that would go over well, when people are already complaining constantly about the rewards.

Honestly you just have to get used to it. Stop hoarding things you don’t need, stop spending time thinking about things you don’t want to think about, etc. Sure, you might end up doing things sub-optimally, but that’s the choice you have to make. Nobody’s making you keep or sell or salvage or deposit anything you don’t want to, other than yourself.

WvW no longer required for world completion

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Andred.1087

Andred.1087

To share my experience: I neglected to do WvW completion for a very long time, until just a couple weeks ago when my server was on the top of a horribly stacked matchup. This made it very easy to get the completion. The week after, however, my server was on the other side of the stomping, and I imagine getting completion at that time would be miserably difficult. Maybe when the game first came out, it was mostly about people not wanting to do WvW, but now the matchups are so often grossly unfair that it can make it much more difficult to do if you’re just not lucky enough. And don’t even bother saying “you should just transfer to a better server.” That’s literally the reason this is a problem.

Imbalanced asc armor costs by class

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Andred.1087

You’re asking for regulatory help in order to increase the price of leather rather than decrease the price of cloth. Surely you haven’t banked a few stacks of Elonian Leather in anticipation of this change. Surely.

Wanze spends an extraordinary amount of time analyzing the game economy and offering explanations/solutions to a huge number of questions and problems people have with it. Besides that, I’m pretty sure he plays the TP on the regular, and has loads more money than anybody in the game needs. To suggest this nearly-max-length post offering a detailed and thoughtful analysis of the T7 market is nothing but a ploy to make a quick buck off of a change that would require months to effect is hyper-cynical and plain ridiculous.

That said, everyone start buying up Elonian now! Nothing could go wrong!

Removal Of WvW Map Completion In Patch

in WvW

Posted by: Andred.1087

Andred.1087

Everything you can earn from WvW (which isn’t much btw) can be earned from only doing PvE. But the other way around this is not true.

Yeah, that does seem a little unfair, but it also seems to me that ANet might not have ever intended WvW to be something people do exclusively. I think they intended it more as an extension to PvE that includes aspects of PvP, which justifies their original decision to include it in map completion. Players, however, decided (not without reason) that the PvE part of WvW was completely useless, and the goal should be PPT, which is part of why the matchups are so stacked now, but it sort of boils down to less-than-stellar game design as far as WvW is concerned.

They have capping in the new dailies.

Many just cap then go make a sandwich till the round ends. The players are not at fault in this regard.

Really? The players are not at fault for their own actions? Let me get this straight… you’re putting the blame on ArenaNet for having capping in the dailies, rather than the selfish jerks who go into PvP and stop playing when they have what they want?

Sorry, but no… everybody is responsible for their own actions, regardless of what temptations exist before them. This is the exact mindset people use to blame victims of sex crimes for wearing revealing clothes. What are all the poor, thoughtless, sex-crazed men to do when they see a fine girl in a skimpy outfit, other than act on their primal selfish instincts?

Obviously it’s fine to stop playing the game if something comes up in real life that takes precedence. GW2 is a video game, so real-world problems always come first. But your sandwich can wait until the end of the match.

"No-grind philosophy"

33 pages of “Colin said this” vs “No, he said that

WTF does it matter what he said or what he meant?? And do any of you realize that the argument you are having is actually about what “grind” means, which is entirely subjective and differs from player to player? Also, to the people arguing there is a grind in this game, why don’t you just kittening do something else if you don’t like it? This is the stupidest thread, and you people are arguing for no kittening reason other than nobody will let it go.

Specifically the blame for this thread falls on the people who continually refer to Colin’s statements in the Manifesto as if they were in any way a legally binding agreement. Guess what? Things change in 4 years! Even if you’re 100% right about what he said, and not twisting it for your own argument (which is a joke, because that’s exactly what you’re doing), who cares if things are different now? That’s how the universe works! If you can’t deal with it, your life is going to look like this thread. Is that what you want?

So, seeing as no amount of asinine debating is going to change the reality of the game, those of you who are legitimately upset about this are left with a couple options:

1. Get over it and stop playing GW2
2. Get over it and keep playing GW2

I swear… this thread moved past constructiveness long ago and should be locked ASAP. This is just ridiculous, and you should all feel bad for continuing to engage in this pointless conversation.

Why would they not?

I never said they wouldn’t.

“Even if those changes do make it into the chinese version there is no guarantee they will be introduced into the western version as well.”

Do I misunderstand something about that sentence? Because it sounds to me like you’re implying they might not.

Yes, the point of making false patch notes is to make them look legit. So pointing out they look legit doesn’t proof they aren’t false.

The question I asked was that, assuming they are legit, why would they only be implemented in the Chinese client, when a number of the things on the list have already been confirmed for Western and were supposed to be released 2 days ago?

Do you think there will be that many who don’t buy it? I would guess a very large majority of anybody who is still actively playing will buy it, because if you plan on continuing to play the game, why would you not get the expansion? Aside from not having the money right away, but let’s be serious, it probably won’t be more than $40.

Well I personally know many players who’ve quit so they won’t buy it unless they come back to test the game first. Let’s say they reinstall the game post xpac to see what the game is like first, which is would make sense. There are players who will refuse on principal as they thought they wouldn’t have to buy an xpac ever possibly.

Again, I’m talking about people who still play. Obviously people who quit aren’t going to buy it. And before there’s any miscommunication about that, when I say “quit” I mean “quit and aren’t coming back for anything.”

You can’t even imagine the amount of popcorn I have prepared in case those notes are false. oh joy oh joy

Those notes are real, coming from the official chinese GW2 site. But I remain skeptical for now. Even if those changes do make it into the chinese version there is no guarantee they will be introduced into the western version as wel. I hope it will, but for now I assume it won’t.

Hope for the best, expect the worst.

Why would they not? The camera and stability changes were specifically supposed to hit the Western client on Tuesday, new gem store skins are commonplace in updates, and from what I’ve heard, the 3-to-kick change was supposed to have been implemented in a patch some months back, but apparently didn’t actually work.

I guess there’s no guarantee about WvW, since the Chinese WvW scene could be even worse than what we have now, but considering how long / how many people have been asking for this, it doesn’t seem unreasonable that it’s planned for all versions.

No new gear?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Andred.1087

Andred.1087

Im actually immensely happy there isnt a gear treadmill! Feels so awful if all my progress is invalidated in one fel swoop! Sure there is ascended gear to work towards and I think thats a good thing in terms of endgame content.

(although cloth wearers have it rough: needing 36 bolts of damask for one set of ascended armor AND each spool of silk thread is vastly more expensive to craft than elonian leather squares or deldrimor steel ingots).

Yeah, ascended isn’t too bad though. Play the game long enough, and eventually you’ll have all the materials/gold you need for a set. That might be quite a long time unless you get some lucky drops, but even so, I think it’s well within the range of an average player, given that they play long enough to get there.

Newbie Here: Questions and Comments

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Andred.1087

Andred.1087

1. I’m not sure where you’re looking, but the beginner zones have numerous lower-level hearts, and I feel like you should have been presented with one almost immediately upon entering the zone. Perhaps you went the wrong way and ended up in a higher-level part of the zone?

2. Crafting can be a little difficult to get into right off the bat as a new player, but as you do more stuff, you’ll acquire more materials and be able to craft with much less effort. One issue is that cloth, such as jute, can only be obtained from enemy drops, whether from loot bags or salvaging light armor. Same goes for leather and medium armor, but leather prices tend to be much lower than cloth. Other basic materials like ore and wood can be gathered from the world.

3. All the choices just affect your backstory / the progression of your personal story.

4. I’m not sure if this has been the case the entire time, as I seem to recall a day when this wouldn’t happen, but yeah when you equip new armor, it doesn’t retain the colors you had on the previous armor. Because of this, there isn’t really much point in dying armor while you’re leveling up, since you’ll be getting newer, better gear at a rather quick rate.

You must be talking about open-world encounters, because if you try to stand around pressing 1111 in a dungeon, you’re gonna have a bad time.

With open world encounters, there’s pretty much no way to make them challenging without making them too challenging, so I really don’t see a point in trying when they already serve their purpose well enough.

More people streaming to non-players is certainly beneficial for the game’s publicity, but I really don’t see why we on the forums should care which streamers are or are not playing GW2. The game was surely on track to proceed smoothly without them, so this is really just extra advertisement.

Though, if competitive game streamers start doing PvP, it could go a long way toward ArenaNet’s dream of GW2 being a real ESport.

AI in GW2 is abysmal, and it’s sad that the ranger’s unique mechanic relies entirely on something so broken. I’m sure schedules at ANet are always tight with the expansion coming up, but it’s just appalling, the number of things that have obviously needed fixing since launch and still have yet to be addressed in any capacity that we know of.

The fact is, people are always going to find the fastest way to run through content, and when they do, that’s going to become the standard. Whether that’s one role for each party member or one build that everyone uses doesn’t really make a difference; people are still going to be required to play a certain way in order to meet the standard.

You cannot have zero grind in an RPG and especially MMO’s.

Not while players think like that. I’m amazed at how many players have eaten the lie that all MMORPGs need grind, instead of relying on fun and polished content.

Care to elaborate on your genius plan to revolutionize the industry? Because last I checked, no MMO will survive without repetitive activity that people will inevitably label a grind.

Also I’m curious as to what your ideas are for creating “fun and polished content” constantly and at next to no cost, since any other scenario would require the introduction of content that has to be repeated.

Yep, like others have said just find something you want and go for it. It might feel a little weird not having an answer as to why you want that thing, but pursuing it does give you something to do. Here are some suggestions:

- Full exotic gear, with runes and sigils supporting your play-style
- Full ascended gear after that
- 100% map completion
- Legendary weapon (new ones coming in the expansion!)
- Lots and lots of achievements

When the expansion comes, they will be trying to add even more long-term goals for players to pursue both while leveling and after hitting the cap. Keep your eyes open for anything that interests you, and once you see something you want, go for it!
