WoW's failure is GW2 gain

I think there is a fundamental difference between a game like GW2 and a game like WoW that illustrates why housing would work better in this game than it would there.

First – Im not saying either of these models is bad – just different. They appeal to different kinds of players (and, obviously, I prefer GW2’s model ).

With scaling and no gear treadmill, GW2 strives to keep every piece of content in the game relevant to players indefinitely. For example, a lvl 65 boss (Tequatl) is intended to be relevant content permanently – for the life of the game.

In WoW, the model is centered around what is new – content becomes obsolete (even max level content) really quickly. The devs have to work hard to stay ahead of that curve.

So how does this apply to housing? Housing in a game is, by definition, a stationary element. It isn’t something you experience once (or just a few times) and move on. At its most basic level, this is more in line with the GW2 philosophy than the WoW model.

The real reason though is how it contrasts with the rest of the game. As others have said, Garrisons arent the problem people are having in WoW. They problem they are having is that they are grinding through the rest of the game too fast and, when they look at WoD, it seems focused on Garrisons more than pushing out new content (which, again, is crucial to WoW’s delivery model).

In GW2, even if they introduced a concept similar to garrisons and then didnt touch that content for 24 months, players would still have plenty to do in the game (important note – not saying people wouldnt complain on the forums – that is just a force of nature).

The world remains alive through scaling and the lack of the treadmills, making content like housing (or guild halls) more viable.

Exactly. I just finished reading a post in the WoW forum pointing out how as the players progress through the new expansion, how buildings in the current version of the garrison will become useless. The Devs will need to be continuously upgrading what it offers to players or garrisons will become irrelevant. Even if they are upgraded, they still could be abandoned when a new expansion comes.

With a game like Guild Wars 2 a similar type concept would be primarily social and/or cosmetic. Meaning that it could be relevant throughout the time that someone plays a game.

It’s the difference between a vertical progression type game like WoW and a horizontal progression type game such as Guild Wars 2.

This is all fine and dandy (after all, the devs don’t have time to dig through hundreds of pages to weed out ‘contructive posts’ from the rest), but the entire idea first begs the question, or rather a clarification of a self-contradicting phenonenom commonly noted in controversial threads – are the forums representative (enough) of the playerbase to warrant all the effort put into this?
After all, based on official statements over the span of time, it is but 1% of total playerbase that posts, and less than 10% that actually reads.
In the same breath, however, these same forums are touted as the main source of player input for the devs (the closest thing to a PTR, if you will), with this initiative being the first tangible ‘proof’ of Anet’s interest to consolidate and make something of all the ‘constructive feedback’.

So, are the forums not representative enough (common argument against negative feedback), or are they actually a pretty good and accurate source of information as regards ‘constructive feedback’.
Moreover, defining exactly what Anet understands under ‘contructive’ would perhaps in place, too, because different people find different things constructive (I, for example, find the thread on Lost Potential really constructive).

Oh yea, the forum slave…specialists shouldn’t get any special tags, as they don’t have any special rights or powers (on paper, at least).

Just because people post on the forums doesn’t mean they experience the game differently than non posters or that their opinions aren’t the same as a percentage of the non posting players.

Getting kicked out like a homeless bum from a fancy restaurant doesn’t make my day.

To turn this into a proper analogy…what would a fancy restaurant do to patrons that decided to remain in the facility past closing time? What would they do if they had an all access pass?

If you can answer those two questions correctly, then you can understand why you get kicked out of the Royal Terrace when you log out there upon logging back in.

My pass and the Royale Terrace don’t have a closing time. It’s open access 24/7. ^^

Do places that are open 24/7 kick people out who have paid for unlimited access?

You don’t get the concept Astral, do you? Even a place with 24/7 open access, like say a Gym can and will remove people from the premises that stay to long, but let me specifically make the case for the Royal Terrace. Even with the Terrace being open 24/7, let’s presume it has limited space and can’t hold 25,000 people(just numbers mind you). So if 50,000 people have access to this place and it only holds 15,000…how do you accommodate the other 35,000? By removing those that are no longer present physically you allow those other people to access the facility. I know we’re talking virtual space here and a game and not the real world, but at least have some fun with it.

Lol. I think you are taking this a bit too seriously. We’re talking virtual space here and a game and not the real world, but at least have some fun with it.

It’s OK. I’m sure when these new forum “specialist” moderators are hired things will be a lot more nice around here and nobody will ever have to worry about being slandered again.

A couple of misconceptions there.

Gaile Gray (Source)
ArenaNet Forum Communications Team Lead

“Here are some answers to question about the Forum Specialist Program:

No forum specialist will be a moderator. No FS will have moderation rights or back-end forum access of any kind. They will not infract, suspend, or ban any forum member — ever. Forum specialists will be able to flag points — as any member can and should do — and we hope they will do that actively. But each flag will be reviewed impartially and acted upon only by staff members and only if the flagged post or thread is in breach of the UA, RoC, Naming Policy, or FCoC.

We expect applicants to have a decent, but not necessarily perfect, forum and game history. We would not dismiss an application simply because someone received an infraction for speaking in the heat of the moment or making a joke to which someone reacted negatively. We will review game and forum account history on a case-by-case basis. Naturally, someone with a long list of forum infractions or someone with a sketchy game history is is not a likely candidate.

Forum specialists will not asked to muzzle their opinions. These will be highly involved forum members, and their opinions and insights are valuable. We will encourage specialists to link to official threads for official information and offer their personal opinions clearly as opinions.

We will not limit our selections to cheerleaders and “white hats.” Communication style is key. Offering constructive ideas for change is good; complaining is not. Expressing opinions is fine; expressing opinions as fact is not. Interacting positively is good; condemning, dismissive, or condescending communication is not.

This is a pilot program. We hope to be able to expand it outside the U.S. in the future, but there are legal reasons for the limitation right now."

Thank you Gaile for your responses!!!

Although I am a forum frequenter, and do tend to lean more toward the “white knight” side of things, and feel the game is doing rather well, and do “defend” against unmerited attacks about how much the game is broken and dying, I won’t be applying.

I do agree with others, that is a special tag is made it will be a target for those who have a “bone to pick”. However, if the specialists just had a specialist tag that just says WvW specialist or Lore specialist, without their own account names, that would reduce the amount of hate mail they recieve and still be able to serve their function. Anything else is an invite to be trolled.

I do like the idea, although many of the more vocal and well respected members are unwilling or unable due to the restrictions.

I like that, a tag that’s about their specialty. That might take care of most of the problems with naming them and lets people know when what they say is more relevant and when it’s not.

Anet might want to post a sticky thread when this begins outlining what they can and can’t do for those who need the information pointed out to them.

Some people are going to believe that every time they get an infraction it’s because a Forum Specialist on a power trip is after them.

Race Change?

in Players Helping Players

Astral Projections.7320

Question, not ever having played other MMOs, do the ones that have race changes have story lines personalized to the races or do they have one story line that all races use and any difference in the story arc is tied to professions?

Kind of,

in WoW (has faction change & race change) each race has its own starter zones and quests associated with that area and race. But I believe any race can visit and complete those quests.

SWTOR has light, dark, grey alignment with your personal story and profession, and some quests respond to your race in some instances.

Not to sure about some of the other mmo’s that I have never invested time into other than to check out.

They way I look at it, your race is nothing more than a skin. I have only ran one out of my five professions through the story (pre pact changes, removed parts), and the rest of my bank/JP chest alts were leveled through crafting, scrolls, eotm, and WvW.

As for cultural armor I don’t think it matters now as much w/wardrobe update making the skin race account bound, and the actually rare items bought by the vendor could be set to account bound, or in the stipulation of a race change to forego the use of those items.

I was thinking more of how the game handles it. Changing race when the story line depends on what profession you are, might mean little more than pulling out one set of quests and putting in another, something games with quest logs do all the time as you pick up and finish quests. Their story line may only begin when they speak to an NPC after character creation, which means it’s more quest like. In this game it’s race dependent and starts at character creation. It might be more firmly imbedded in the hero panel and there may not be tools to remove and exchange it like a game that has a quest log.

Even if it is possible to “switch skins” it may be they don’t want chars with one race and another race’s personal story. Maybe something like this could lead to all sorts of bugs.

I also would think that a such a tag would make a person less likely to post in some circumstances. If everything s/he says has more “weight” than a random person then it’s harder for them to post in frivolous, lightweight threads in a frivolous, lightweight manner as they are likely to be singled out for comment about whether or not what they say is what ANet thinks and also whether or not what they are saying is appropriate there. (Because you know, it can be explained till you are blue in the face that they are not official but that explanation is not going to be known or believed by all).

It also means that in a serious discussion their opinion has more weight than Mr Random, regardless of whether they are saying the same things or not.

Is there really any reason to make public who the forum specialist are since they mostly are there to report back to ANet? I don’t see why someone needs a tag for that. Having a tag opens up possibilities of them being constantly harassed about being white knights and ANet toadies. Imo, it would be better not to have people publicly labeled as being “semi official” when they have no official function other than collate information and report or linking official posts (which anyone can do).

Astral Projections.7320

There’s a big difference in the philosophies behind the 2 MMOs.

WoW is a much more competitive game and each expansion there is an increase in levels and the old gear is trashed. Guild Wars 2 is based more on cooperative play. Tagging, harvesting, events, etc, are all shared between the players here. The Devs said, they want you to be always glad to see another player in PvE. In addition, once you get to level 80 and gear up, that’s where you stay. No higher levels or higher gear stats is expected. If you expect Guild Wars 2 be like WoW you’re going to be disappointed and be missing what this game has to offer.

There is not and never will be a race change option. If you are really unhappy with your race then re-roll now before its too late. Anet has said before that it would simply be too complicated to change race.
However to save leg-work i would suggest stocking up on Tomes of Knowledge with your current class and then simply using 80 of them on your new preferred race. That way you can change with minimal trouble and without effort.

you have a link for that? I don’t recall (may have missed) such a statement.

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Suggestions-Gemstore-Items/page/35#post4669647

When they said no, a long time ago, it had to do with problems how the races tie into their personal story, starting with character selection. A race change would either require them to change your hero panel or have a race that has another race’s storyline.

From what I’ve read in that forum, the complaints are not so much the garrisons as the current lack of new things to do outside the garrison once you hit level 100. Which is a different problem. And while I’ve read complaints about them I’ve also read people saying they are happy with them.

If Guild Wars 2 looks over those complaints and avoids the problems as well as looking into successful player housing then there is no reason to believe that it would be a failure here.

No, don’t move to a different server. The game has Megaservers now so servers are only important for WvW. Guesting won’t make a difference either for the same reason. The game now condenses all PvE maps down to a few. All servers go into the same set of maps and the map shards open and close as the populations increases and decreases.

Gold Infusion vs Magic Find Infusion

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Astral Projections.7320

It depends on what you do but generally the MF will give you more profit. I personally went with the karma one as I could convert it into items (via the mystic forge) that I could sell on the TP . This gave more consistency rather than relying on RNG.

You can only use one gold infusion per character as only one item has an utility slot that can have a gold infusion.

Thank you for your answer!

I thought, that a BackItem has an utility slot .

Thank you for your information!

Does Magic Find Infusion give chance to get more rare items from boxes and bags? Or only from killed mobs.

From the wiki:

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Magic_find
Magic Find is both an account bonus and a character attribute that increases the chance to receive higher-quality loot from slain foes. With a couple exceptions, it does not affect containers (including champion loot bags), chests, or any other source of loot. The exceptions are:
1) Containers received from structured PvP reward tracks.
2) Lost Bandit Chests in the Silverwastes when you have Perseverance.

Queue fails, requeue, queue fails, requeue, success, wait for all the slots on the panel to fill. Get in the arena. Wait some more for enough people. And this is on days where they have (theoretically) more people playing PvP.

do not queue. Go into the server browser in Spvp. All 20 man servers have 10 player and 10 observer spots. Find a server with 9/20 or 8/20 players, join. The queue actually waits for a match to end for it to put you somewhere, while the server browser allows you to join mid match.

It would be kind of like queueing with a system for already ongoing dungeons. And having to wait while the round of dungeon ends and another round begins.

And no, the amount of people playing is around the same as I’ve seen 8 months ago.

Ah, Ty. I find the PvP panel most unclear. The time I located the one you are talking about, I got observer only. I’ll try it again.

I went to this horrible restaurant last night. They had over 100 menu items. I have chosen to not eat meat or carbs which only left me with 5 choices for meals. Needless to say, I was not impressed and wrote them a negative review about how they lack choices.

Lol, not a good analogy. Most MMO players don’t like PvP. That is proven by how few open world PvP MMOs there are. Yet the vast majority of Dailies are in PvP. WvW is PvP no matter what Anet says. What people don’t like about PvP is other players stalking / killing them which can happen in WvW which makes it PvP by definition.

So there go 2/3 of the choice for most people off the bat. To use the restaurant analogy it would be like a restaurant being silly enough to have 2/3 of its menu consist of food that the majority of the customers don’t like.

I’m going to assume that you have never really played PvP or WvW.

Why would you assume that?

You’re also speculating that the “majority” of players are PvE only. If you’re going to use that to back up your argument then provide proof.

First there is the fact that the vast majority of MMOs do not have open world PvP. Second, the majority of MMOs don’t have any PvP at all. Finally, the vast majority of MMOs that launched with an open-world PvP quickly ended up putting PvP in designated areas or moving PvP to certain servers only.

Supply and demand – if the majority of players wanted PvP there would be more PvP.

In addition, the dungeons queues I get in fill up fast. Some fill up before I can even chose it. The PvP dailies I’ve started doing; I get in a queue and wait for a minute or two. Queue fails, requeue, queue fails, requeue, success, wait for all the slots on the panel to fill. Get in the arena. Wait some more for enough people. And this is on days where they have (theoretically) more people playing PvP.

If there were more PvP players than PvE, why were (are?) the PvP choices of arenas so limited to one, capture point? Why do the PvP forums complain so much about how they never get new arena fight types like capture the flag. If PvP was Guild Wars 2 bread and butter with most people there, they would be spending most of their updates there,

Hello.
Just found this thread.

  • THE PVP DAILY IS BIGCATKITTEN MESSED UP BLEEEEH. PLEASE REMOVE IT. NOW. NO FANCY WORDS, NOW !!

It does more harm than good. Few poeple try a new class while most already bad pvers in pvp now go on a class theyre not familiar with, while matchmaking still puts them quite high.
MY MESMER GUILDIE IS LAUGHING KILLING THIEVES ON THIEF DAILY DAYS FOR SAKE.

I apologize for the rudeness.

Well in my opinion, players who joins solo or team PvP with a class they have never played are pretty dumb in the first place. So in short, it is not the daily fault it is the players who are stupid enough to join solo or team arenas when they are in need of practice in Hotjoin.

I don’t do PvP: is there a tutorial? Players see these tasks in their Dailies window so they want to try them – are they directed as to the best way to start doing PvP?

Nope. No tutorial, just panels and buttons to click on.

Lol. I was so noob the first time I did a PvP daily I got in one and couldn’t move. I was freaking out, trying to move, dodge, anything, expecting any second that someone would come over to kill me. Then I figured out it was observation only. I have no idea now which one that was, team maybe.

I knew from reading the forums that hotjoin, whichever and whatever the heck that was, was the one I wanted. I eventually figured out how to do it, but no tutorial. I was hitting panels and buttons trying to figure out what did what and how to set up PvP gear.

Quaggans have animations where they hold weapons and do attacks, both on land and water. It shouldn’t be any trouble replacing one weapon with another or one animation with another. As to armor, they won’t be wearing your armor just like the Watchknight tonic transformation doesn’t wear your armor.

If anyone one form is unsuitable for combat then obviously it wouldn’t be made. The set of Guild Wars 1 transformation tonics had some that weren’t combat useable because of animation problems.

I guess you haven’t been keeping up with the changes. The New Player Experience, aka the NPE changed and pushed back the utility skill unlock levels to levels 13, 17, and 19. So this is a legitimate question from him.

Best Server(s) for an Oceanic Player

LFG is not just one server. It’s across all the NA or EU servers. As Inculpatus said, the only time servers matter now is for WvW.

Here’s the article on Megaservers: https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/introducing-the-megaserver-system/

In my experience, LFG cycles pretty fast and fills up quickly. I’ve never had to wait more than a couple of minutes for a dungeon party to fill.

[Suggestion] Race Transformation Tonics

Could such a tonic even turn you into a Quaggan or can it only turn you into one of the currently playable races?

I would think that any combat useable tonic would need to be something that can do combat animations. The tonic would need to be able to both equip your weapons and do things like dodge or swim. The dodge part might rule out something like a Centaur tonic. As long as a Quaggan can equip weapons and do the animations I would assume a Quaggan tonic could be combat useable,

Build Templates

I would probably have been doing WvW for months now if this were an option, but every time I think about trying it, I just don’t want to change my build.

I still have hope that this feature will make it in sometime in the future, but I’m rather annoyed it hasn’t been there from the start. Did nobody think of it? Or did they actually find a reason not to do it that outweighed this supreme convenience?

I remember from back before the game started, but can’t find the quote now, (it’s gone with the internet winds) a statement where one of the Devs said they wanted people to be attached to their builds. For the builds they had to be personally important to them. (I don’t remember the exact words they used but it was to that effect). This stuck in my memory because i was playing Guild Wars 1 at the time and had a bunch of builds I used and builds copied off of ones pinged in chat. I thought it was strange that they would be making it so restrictive and didn’t realize people would want to switch around according to what they were doing.

If my memory is correct then that explains why no templates and why it was so difficult to easily change traits for quite some time and also why they made armor stats so restrictive compared to Guild Wars 1.

Chinese Language

I rather doubt they are going to add any new languages to the NA/EU versions anytime soon. If they do it will probably be European languages as there aren’t enough Chinese speakers on the NA/EU to be cost effective for them.

Guild Wars 1 had infinite use tonics that changed you into an NPC or mob. They lasted an hour, had no cooldown and most were useable in combat. They had at least one Charr (Pyre Fierceshot), centaur (Zhed), the Mad King, Golems, a couple of Asura and various human npcs. As well as a few others (Margonite?) that iirc weren’t combat useable.

A friend and I, towards the end of our time there would use identical tonics and we would play as two Jora’s or two Ogden’s, for example. It was a fun change of pace that this game currently doesn’t allow.

What I dislike especially about events in the starter zone is I have to make a choice whether to about help others find events.

People are asking in map chat “where are events?”
1) An event pops up near me. I ping the waypoint and give fast directions. By the time I get there, the event is almost over and by the time the people that listened to me get there, it’s done. They wasted silver and time listening to me and got nothing.
2) One pops near me but I say nothing. It still makes me feel bad because I’m not helping others who are repeatedly asking about events.

Either way I feel like I’m get in a lose/lose situation with these events. I want to be social and help others but I’m getting into situations where either I almost trolling people or I’m keeping events to myself.

If you are willing to farm the needed mats the weapons aren’t so bad. They won’t cost (much) additional gold if you gather the mats yourself and you can farm a bit each day and get the weapons over time.

Mailing big items/gold

I loaned a couple hundred gold to a guildie once so he could finish making a Legendary for sale. In return he gave me part of the sale price.

With each transfer of gold that we emailed to each other, we specifically said in the email what we were doing and why. We both kept the emails for a couple of weeks after he sent me my share of the profits. Neither of us had a problem.
