How would you redesign the guardian?

Azoqu.8917

A worthwhile healer (not completely outmatched by druid and their grace of the land) and an actual condi build.

Concerning the worthwhile healer part, Guardian healing suffers from 2 major problems:
1) 5 person cap on boons destroys Guardian healing because you can not target specific people with your aegis. Try healing fractal 100 challenge mode as a Guardian, the aegis spam seems near broken against the final boss and combined with “Stand your Ground” you can basically ignore 80% of his attacks.
2) Ever healer (Ele, Rev, Engi, Guardian) suffers and is not viable because of Grace of the Land. The true fix to this problem if Anet really wanted viability for other healers would be to remove it from the game or let buffs hit 10 people (which would fix Guardian healing problem #1).

And concerning a condition DPS spec, if they made spirit weapons last forever like necromancer minions, you’d have a Zeal, Radiance, Virtues build for condition damage using both the sword and hammer to put on 8s of burning each time they attacked (4s baseline and with burn duration 8s, though I might be wrong and it’s 3/6s). They could also touch up torch 5 and make it give out 1s or ever 0.5s of burning per damage tick. Also if the change to VoJ makes its way to PvE from PvP that would help too.

Guardian Trappers, create build diversity

in PvP

Posted by: Azoqu.8917

Azoqu.8917

I would actually say that thief damage is higher than guardian damage (from personal experience). :s
Plus there is some diversity to guardian.. I mean I’ve seen people play support guard or variations of trapper, partially only taking 1 trap.

Only for someone who knows how to play thief, that’s the difference

Those thieves that spam their staff 5 in the group deal enough damage that can be more than lethal to a guard or even a whole team when in a team fight.

Besides someone who knows how guardian plays can avoid like.. let’s say 40-60% of the damage.

Hey man, spamming staff 5 is 0.0000001% harder that putting down traps. It should therefore have super insane damage and survivability attached to it to compensate for that increase in difficulty of use.

DH Spear pull should NOT work on evade!

Posted by: Azoqu.8917

Azoqu.8917

I can imagine the thief rage given it is yet another tool guardians get to shut down thieves, but let’s be real, if DH weren’t around, Thief would be broken beyond belief.

And this is honestly why the ability is not broken at all. The only one it truly affects is Thief and since Guardians can basically stand afk and watch a Thief almost kill themselves while attacking them, it doesn’t really matter. Not to mention perma evade (yes I know of the vulnerable frames, still a small grap to hit in like dodging the spear and way more often), stealth (always been of the opinion, even before the game released, that stealth is a mechanic that can never be truly balanced) and insane damage (hello vault) are increably dumb too.

You should be taking master of consecrations and pf. That’s your biggest nuke.

Core burns cant 1v1 very well, but they do live long enough for a teammate to back up the point. You excel the moment someone downs on either your team or the enemy and they all pile up. Load up the symbols on them with pf and its a team wipe every time the moment they go for their downed.

Don’t forget torch 5 in that situation, it’s hilarious.

Remove Armor Weight Restrictions!

Wardrobe slots that cost to buy and aren’t character specific and then cost charges to set up and cost more charges to change? No thanks.

It wouldn’t cost charges to swap between but if you wanted to change the chest or something it would (this would solely be for the fact that I doubt Anet would ever implement this if it avoided charges completely).

If a wardrobe was put in that you not only had to pay for it but every single one of your chars had to share the same armor set for that wardrobe slot because it’s account wide and not character specific, then it’s not worth it. they can try to sell it that way but it’s to inflexible for the price. I would just stick to outfits then. At least each char can have a different outfit and switch between them for no cost at all.

I’ll try explaining this once more (not like it will ever happen anyhow):

1) All characters would have their own wardrobe like now.
2) You could set up a “Wardrobe Slot” to have a certain look to it (needing to stay within the same armor class because of how all the armor was built)
3) You could toggle a certain “Wardrobe Slot” on just like an outfit now (aka you are making your own outfits that you could turn on and off at any time)
4) Since it’s armor it would be completely dyeable unlike outfits that only have 4 slots
5) In order to change a piece in a “Wardrobe Slot” you would have to spend a charge but you can always swap between slots for free (if you want to change the set from being carapace chest to bladed chest it would cost 1 charge)
6) Swapping between sets would cost you nothing (you had to buy the slot to with gems to begin with)

That is my idea of a system that does the following:
Lets you store certain looks.
Lets you wear any class of armor without breaking the game with terrible clipping.
Allows you to swap looks often and not have to worry about running out of charges (yes even if you have 2000+ charges, some people would never swap because of the possiblility to run out)

Hopefully this full run down makes you understand the idea better and not be confused about it.

I know I would immediately pay some gems to unlock a new Wardrobe panel, allowing me to switch to medium or heavy.

I’ve been of the opinion for some time now that Anet should sell “Wardrobe slots”. They would cost charges to set gear in them but would save across your account. So if you wanted to set up a light set and wear it on a heavy then go ahead. The only thing would be is you still couldn’t put light with medium pieces but it would allow you to wear any armor in the game.

Accessibility in terms of “Hey, my 5 man Fractal group wants to try raids, but we can’t find 5 other players!” is also something we talk about. It’s just a much more difficult problem to solve.

As a successful raider, this is something I wish was looked at in multiple different ways. I love raids and the difficulty that comes with them but at times I wish they were 5 man instead of 10 because it is really easy to find a core of 5 people because of fractals and dungeons. I do hope you, in the future, make “raids” (or dungeons cough) that are for 5 people but just as hard, or harder, than the current raid.

Cleansing Flame definitely does not need burning per tick. It can already output 10 stacks when supported. It’s a lot nicer with the decreased channel time, although I still think it could use another buff or two.

In my opinion it needs one of the following:
- Torch trait makes #5 burn off boons from enemies
- #5 removes conditions from the guardian as well
- #5 applies a stack of burning per hit

And then for spirit weapons, please Anet just make them like necromancer minions and only go away if killed.

Oh, here we go with the entitlement accusation again…..

If anyone is to be accused of entitlement, it should be those who complained to developers that there wasn’t enough hard content in gw2. These entitled gamers felt that the expansion(HoT) should cater to them. They are the ones who called for changes to the game to fit their gaming experience.

It was pretty transparent that hard content was not what they were really after. They wanted exclusivity. How dare a scrub have the same skin as me!!! So the entitlement argument is laughable……

You do know that when the game was first getting announced that dungeons were described exactly as how raids are now. There were supposed to be this extremely deadly and difficult content and turned out to not be when players used everything available to their advantage. Orr was way more populated and the mobs were harder until a few months after release because people thought it was to hard. Now you could bring a beach towel and an umbrella and have a great day in Orr while laughing at all the mobs doing nothing.

The game was always meant to have difficulty for the people looking for it but over time the game turned into this casual mess with nothing difficult to speak of. So of course people complained for harder content, how else were you going to keep interest in something that is so easy you can pilot it in your sleep? We never wanted an entire expansion to cater to us. All we wanted was for content that was hard enough to require effort to complete.

The supportive nature of the Torch’s #5 skill is fine. What isn’t fine is the fact that it’s close-ranged and it provides no self-cleansing. Either it should get a range boost or it should remove a few conditions from the user; I’d advocate for the former since the weapon is supposed to be ranged.

I’d be down with torch 5 applying burning as an alternative as well, though a self cleans would be nicer.

Spirit Weapons

Posted by: Azoqu.8917

Azoqu.8917

Since they are spirits, they could make them … invunerable to phisical damage and take condi damage only :P

They used to be immune to all damage and they were trash then as well. About the only time Spirit Weapons were ever considered “good” was when they first put the knockback on the hammer auto attack. The reason was because the hammer never stopped attacking and in PvP if you didn’t have stability you would get CC’d for the entire 15 seconds the hammer was up (which is what PvP feels like nowadays anyhow).

To make spirit weapons be considered worth while, all Anet has to do is make them minions like the necro’s minions and have no duration. I could at least see the sword being used in raids over Test of Faith for the 3rd utility then. And who knows, maybe burn guard in PvE would be viable with permanent pets and the trait, but I doubt it.

But since it doesn’t have purple letters I guess it doesn’t count even though in PvP you do not need purple letters to have access to any stat you want.

It’s not the same because it’s not actually animated once you enter combat. It’s just a skin. Nor can you swap stats on it.

And PvP players need to swap stats? Glorious Hero armor is also one of the best skins in the game so it doesn’t matter if it’s animated or not. I want a full set but I can’t have it. Yet I do not come to the forums and complain about it because I know that to get it I need to be in the top of PvP just like for Legendary armor (and be honest, if it wasn’t purple letters the vast majority of complainers wouldn’t care, transforming or not) you need to be the top of PvE.

This game needs way more rewards for actual hard content (some people will say raids aren’t hard, but harder than the rest of PvE). I was choked when the game first came out and Legendary weapons were a joke to get, pure money grind. The only rewards off the top of my head that require non-brain dead skill are the following:

Legendary armor
Glorious Hero armor
Liandri mini

Everything else in this game is a joke.

All they really need to do to make spirit weapons viable is to make them function like necromancer minions, no duration. Doing this would make the sword a viable choice as the 3rd utility in raids and would also make condi guard better because you would always have your weapons attacking for burn stacks. Anet would have to swap the active and passive of the shield because otherwise it would give 100% projectile block all the time.

Sorry to disappoint you, but if we were to follow that train of thought, the best rewards would have been exclusive to pvp. Not Raids.

The day when all classes are viable in the same season for PvP sure, but until that day PvP will always be a joke. Raids at least had all classes being viable before this patch. And PvP already has the best armor in this game, glorious hero is better than everything including the legendary armor.

Because all the modes have exclusive ways of obtaining legendaries ?

Weapons – PvE/WvW with the exception being TOL
Backpacks – Fractals/PvP
Armor – Raids

Each mode showcases a specific amount of dedication to that mode and is the endgame reward for it.

So, get out there and raid.

Technically Legendary armor requires open world PvE as well because of the provisioner tokens, chak eggs, and reclaimed metal. So anyone saying Legendary armor is from raids they are wrong, it is from general PvE: Raids, world bosses, open world.

also i don’t understand all the complains, i know raid is not just stack and kill and i am happy it require coordination and knowledge of the fight, just learn how to do it, gather 9 other friends and go do it. it is supposed to be frustrating at start and to fail a lot, you can’t just cry to make it easier or make the armor available elsewhere.

To many people, none of that is at all enjoyable. If you enjoy raids, that’s awesome, keep playing them and having fun, but don’t act as though everyone should enjoy them. They are a very specific type of content that some people enjoy, and others do not, and that’s OK.

And because it is actual hard content instead of press 1 to win/exploit AB for money, it deserves the best rewards in the game. I am actually a little kittened off that in this game, every reward in it is buyable with money. There are basically only a handful of items in this game that do actually require the player to not be horrible so I am glad that the armor requires you to be non-terrible, not even good, just not terrible. Yes I know you can techniqually buy all 150 LI, but that would cost so much that I doubt there will be many who do.

AB multiloot is so broken it is not even funny. An easy solution would be to give the player a 10 minute, 5 stack buff once the octovine dies. Each buff would allow you to look a grand chest so you would only be able to loot the ones in the map you are in. I would also go further and make all the caches behind the wall in TD drop rares so Garant pays out more than AB does. And to take it even farther I would offset these two events by 15 minutes so you can do night time VB, then 15 minutes to set up for TD, then right into AB. Yes you would be looting multiple different maps, but you would have to work for it and not be able to loot the same map 7+ times for doing it once.

I’m pretty sure if people found a way to exploit raid boss chests to loot them 7 times per kill Anet would be on it to fix it so quick. Cause if there is anything Anet is consistent about, it is being inconsistent.

Even if Chrono’s get nerfed through the ground, they are still the only source of Alacrity. As such, they have a permanent home in raids. As it stands, they straight up said that the adjustments will be minor and not the sweeping reductions that would be necessary for the kind of nerf that would have to happen to make Chrono’s and mesmers completely value-less in raids as you assert.

I can think of quite a few people who would love for Chrono to get nerfed out of being viable for raids just so they can actually play their main class and not have to always be the chrono. I also found it hilarious that “Feel my Wrath” was so OP having a 1/6 uptime before HoT yet chronos were allowed to have 100% for about a year.

SoC gives a hps similar to VoR, just at a longer clip. Like most people, I’d prefer if it would proc much more often. Being traited increased the hps by a significant amount, but who is going to take a signet build and pump healing power? I suppose you really could take Radiance, Honor, and Virtues but it feels like a lot of specialization for not a lot of work. Signets in general don’t feel quite solid enough, and that’s something that could be improved upon in the future. Whether or not it comes from Tomes returning, or from Signets taking on more of the skills Tomes used to have doesn’t matter entirely.

The raid healing build uses Honor, Valor, and Virtues though I was thinking while running it in fractals what does Valor give me and if it would be worth ditching for Radiance in order to get blind on VoJ use. Sadly I just couldn’t see any helpful traits but I guess signet passives would be one. Still would not be worth it to increase just the terrible signet passive since you are giving up self-sustain and shield CD reduction.

Anything with a high base heal is often on Anet’s nerf list, but they up the heal co-efficient.
I can see sceptre getting a nerf too. Currently highest dps on a Guardian and its a ranged weapon? No doubt its symbol with get the nerf bat.

It’s only highest on large targets otherwise it is basically tied with Sword and Hammer, and you get more by swapping between sword and scepter in those cases. If anything is nerfed it better be for PvP only because the Guardian is in a pretty good place for PvE damage wise. If anything other weapons need to be looked for for PvE so that they all are viable in some form for raids. Guardian has 3/3 1-hand weapons being viable (mace for healing Guardian), 1/4 for 2-hand weapons, and 3/3 off hands (focus for the initial bursts that you can get from in for downtimes, and shield when you want breaking and knockback).

Since Anet considers Guardian to be their measuring stick for balance, I’d be surprised if they aren’t looking for ways to get staff, greatsword and longbow to all have roles in raids. And concerning PvP, it’s really only when class stacking happens that Guardians become a huge problem.

Well, to be fair, it wouldn’t be relevant, because the lifetime pass just gets you in to the park (so lets you log in to the game) with no guarantees that every ride will always be available. Over time, some rides will be replaced/removed (content subject to change) but you still have your lifetime access to the park.

Making legendaries may be the only reason some people bought HoT (I don’t doubt it). But, if you buy lifetime access to a theme park, and they close your favorite restaurant or ride at the park months later, they aren’t likely to say “here’s your money back” and then compensate you further for the change.

This pretty much nails it. While people argue academics if EULA is relevant or not or where, THIS analogy is exactly how your GW2 payment works.

What do you mean? When I bought GW1 I paid for the ability to only be able to refund my skill points with refund points and I was outraged when they changed it to only be done for free in outposts. Just like how I was outraged when respec costs were removed in GW2 and made to be free everywhere. I paid for the ability to only respec with the trainers! How dare they remove that beloved feature!

Now back on topic: I’ve always found this cancellation discussion hilarious because it is all about the fat cats wanting to be able to show off how fat their wallets are. Lets face it, there is no skill in getting any legendary in this game (even the armor is dicey since you can buy raid kills but at least there is 150 insights required to make it really expensive that way). Now if legendaries actually required being decent at this game (yes just decent, not even good), I could get behind the whining going on in this thread. But since the TP barons can just buy everything in this game I could care less when something that sets them apart gets cancelled.

Well if we’re going back to the really olden times and ignoring the stains that were bearbows and the like for classes (yay Wammos!) here is the breakdown I remember:

4 warriors (sweet 100 blades DPS) + Mesmer = no other class need apply.

But getting deep down to it when talking about support this really was it:
Elementalist = water fields and might stacking (once people learned how)
Necro = nothing
Mesmer = Timewarp + reflects
Ranger = bad spirits
Thief = stealth, but no one knew how to skip stuff so not needed
Engineer = tons of support but no one knew what they really did so ignored by most of the population
Warrior = top DPS (though probably not true, but most people though so. People still think 100 blades is per hit and not a total of all the hits. They didn’t have PS for the longest time)
Guardian = all the support

Then metas started to form and buff/nerfs happened. I’m glad that every class has a spot in the meta right now (except for Engineers somehow) but concerning the healer aspect, unless Grace of the Land is nerfed or a similar buff is added that doesn’t stack with GotL, all other healers need not apply. Elementalist healers heal for way more than a Druid but because of GotL they do not get chosen and since Guardian will probably get a tome healing specialization next expansion they will not be used either unless something is done.

I’d love to hear your assessment of all the elite specialization and which are incredibly off the rails, which are in a good spot, and which, if any, are below what they should be doing. I have a fairly good idea of which are which (chrono being completely insane, while daredevil is meh), but would love to see what someone who plays more than 2 classes thinks.

I’m still loving the fact that rangers/druids finally have a imporant role in these contents since HoT came out. Pre-HoT we rangers never got a spot and were frowned upon most of the time.

That has more to do with the vast majority of rangers being bad bearbows than anything really. I know there was hate for them and necromancers for not bringing anything to the group, but a lot of the hate is because the class just invites bad players to play it.
