New to GW2 - Some Questions

in Players Helping Players

1) As long as it doesn’t try to mod the game client and doesn’t give you an edge over other players then it’s usually OK. I can’t use Google, being in China, so can’t search for it effectively (difficult to tell if the search results Baidu come up are relevant). This link may be of help.

2) Large scale pvp is WvWvW, where 3 servers fight each other. Depending on the servers you face, fights can be as small as 5v5, 1v1, 2v2, or as kitten0v50v50. The most heavily populated servers sometimes field 90 man zergs. However, latency usually kicks in and you’ll end up in slideshow mode.

3) Exploration is broken up in to a few things. There is
(a) World exploration – finding waypoints, points of interest, skill points and vistas. This contributes to an exploration title and rewards
(b) Explorer titles – There are regions in every map that do not have any of the above. They nonetheless contribute to an exploration title and some have jumping puzzles, mini dungeons, secret treasures, diving points, mini boss fights, bits of history related to guild wars 1. Entries to these places can be under hidden rock overhangs, shrubs, waterfalls, holes in the ground

4. Linked before

5. Mesmer is the closest to a “spell sword”. Weapons have a fixed set of skills that they can use. For example, Warriors, Guardians,Thieves, Rangers and Mesmers can all use swords as main hand or off hand, or both, weapons but they all have a different set of skills tied to them. So for Warriors, main hand swords are focused around bleeding opponents and spike attacks, while an off hand sword is more defensive. In comparison, Rangers can only use sword as main hand weapons and is considered the best single target dps weapon you can use.

6. If you’re talking about in the world NPC, then yes the vast majority, if not all, NPCs have voice acted lines. So when you’re walking through a city, you’ll hear human females speaking about the fashion of a noble they’re interested in while in an asura town you’ll hear them talking about their inventions. If you hang around long enough, you’ll hear a full story chain between the NPC’s. Although the story chains loop, they do give a wonderful sense of environment.

7. As you play, you’ll find that the boosters that you can get from the gem store are only minimal 1 use time limited boosts. They’re not game breaking and most players don’t buy them as you can get them as rewards here and there. I’ve still got loads and barely use them. The rest of the things in the store are cosmetic or account upgrades like extra bank tabs, extra character inventory slots, extra character slots (you start with 5).

8. Anet’s model is to grant all players free access to the Living story chapters during the first 2 weeks of release. Logging in during the release gives you the content for free that you can access thereafter as much as you want whenever you want. If you want to get access to it after the 2 weeks, it costs 200 gems but will release it to all characters on your account permanently. Living story season 1 isn’t available yet.

9. “Quests” are not the traditional ones anymore. In each map there are “Renown hearts” which are part of map exploration. The rest are dynamic events or event chains. Event chains can be immensely fun. One of the biggest event chains spans a whole map. One of the most challenging ones is a long slog across a map escorting NPCs, losing them means you have to restart. Another short chain spawns an Elder Dragon Champion to fight.

10. It depends on class. The heavies will feel easier while the light classes may take longer as you may die more times

Always, always, always double check the link before clicking on it. The vast majority of businesses, if not all businesses, that require you to have some sort of secure login will never ask you to provide account names/numbers and passwords.

I honestly have little sympathy for anyone who doesn’t do the most basic of security checks and ends up being scammed or hacked.

When will Zaishen Missions return?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Azrael.4960

Azrael.4960

In the GW2 environment, Zaishen Missions or similar are impossible. The existing dailies and monthlies are largely meant to be equivalent, but of course they’re no where near the same.

However, I would dearly love if they put in Challenge Missions like the old Glint’s Challenge.

As instances for various areas already exist, it would be a comparatively small thing to turn it into an instanced fight. Say, in Dry Top we can go into the Cavern of Shining Lights where we had to do the defend against Mordrem part of the LS. So why not make it a survival mission. Protect Taimi against increasing strong waves of Mordrem. Everyone knows how strong they are especially with all the CC and conditions they bring. A Last Stand style fight would be brilliant and being a mini dungeon instance, there’s no need for redevelopment of content. Best of all, to satisfy the anti-zerk meta enthusiasts, it wouldn’t be type of content that could be zerked.

Commander Tags

Azrael.4960

Let’s ask the obligatory “who are you to dictate how players play?” question.

Personally though, I rarely use my tags except in events or what have you where I know what I’m doing, like Tequatl. Or when I was roaming dry top. Although I play wvw every now and then, that realm is so far out of my expertise I don’t even bother. EOTM is another place I rarely go. It’s worse now that I’ve moved out of Europe but my account still lives on a European world so my latency is so high I wouldn’t be able to play wvw or eotm effectively let alone command it.

However, one thing I do use the dorito for is marking things on the map. Like when the sandstrom in Dry Top kicked in and the chests started appearing, I’d pop my tag to mark it for people. Or if I drop food or banners in a random spot.

Kaz is right that WvW commanders totally look down on EOTM commanders. Pit any competent wvw commander and their zerg against an equivalently sized and kitted eotm zerg and the outcome is obvious.

What would have worked at the outset of GW2 was the splitting of pvp and pve characters like the system in GW1. One couldn’t cross into the other but items unlocked in PVE could be used in PVP. Of course, that would have meant map exploration for WVW would have to have been removed, but I doubt that would have made too many people cry. This would have meant seeing a commander in WvW would have meant that player earned their stripes there. WvW characters would have started at 80 but to unlock your first WvW character would have required an initial progression in PVE.

But that’s all water under the bridge.

No.

Other games do mounts. GW does not. It;s always been that way. I’m guessing most speaking against such are new to GW or have recently come from a game with mounts.

Fair call but I hope it never influences this game. Like getting places is hard. Lazy.

Lazy, you say? Lazy. Well.

What’s lazier, guiding a mount through the terrain, over hill and dale and across mighty rivers, through driving rain, sleet, or snow, most likely while fending off attacks right and left and/or being yanked out of the saddle every five yards because, hey, anet, or….

Clicking a spot on the map and moving there instantly.

Hmm.

People want mounts not to get across the map for general travel, it’s more about getting across the to get to the WP. That’s the lazy part.

Please adjust KB effect for Ranger class

in Ranger

Posted by: Azrael.4960

Azrael.4960

I’m not sure if this has been brought up before and if has sorry.

I’ve been doing the world event chain for months now and have noticed that some folks playing the Ranger class have been using KB as a form of trolling, by knocking back content out of the reach of other players purposely. This is doing nothing but kittening people off and causing animosity.

I don’t know if it’s possible, but could we get a range adjustment on KB applied so it’s not knocking stuff back out of the range of other classes ranged capability? I really don’t see a point in KBing mobs more than 900.

Thanks

Oh noes! You have to pay attention to what you’re hitting with Press #1 and Face-tank world zerg train tactics. The horror that it may move and players would be forced to follow and …. (wait for it) …. (its coming) …. react. * gasp * Oh no I didn’t.

Yes I realize that some rangers don’t always use the correct skills at the best of times. I do. However the long knockback also has its place. Tequatl battery defense comes to mind first.

PvE is already so disgustingly easy… please don’t whine over something like this.

So this. I’ve lost count of the number times when commanding a Teq run that the laser has been saved from the Champ Krait by a timely KB. With the sheer number of players there, that Krait has an incredible stack of defiance.

When you play in a zerg, you’re always gonna get newbs, noobs and bar spammers. I never got annoyed by it and just accepted it as the nature of the game. You just have to adapt to the situation. That’s what gap closers or pulls are for.

Azrael.4960

No, Anet doesn’t “have” to do anything.

Once a permanent 33% speed boost becomes possible through traits/skills/utilities, then it becomes the new norm. What’s to stop players then asking for a 50% speed skill / trait?

That you have to trait / rune for speed boost is to prevent power creep. You have to give up something to gain speed. Slotting runes that give you permanent speed boost means you forgo things like increased damage / critical chance / ferocity / condition damage. I.E you forgo combat effectiveness to gain speed. Strength runes give you increased combat strength at the expense of toughness and vitality, Melandru runes give you increased survivability at the expense of combat strength.

That being said, I do agree that the mesmers got the short end of the stick in regards to getting swiftness from utilities.

Let’s get land spears! and no I’m not talking about a Paragon.

I’d be more inclined to see this in an expansion (should that happen). There’d be a lot to be done in terms of the animation and skills.

Other weapons that we should see on a lancer would be
Two handed: Long bow, short bow
Main hand: Dagger, Sword, Axe, mace
Off hand: Dagger, shield,

Here is a new idea to slap on mounts based on speed as the motivator.

The way it would work is that the mounts would get an incredible speed boost of 100% and if you get near or are riding with another person on a mount you would slow down to 20% and if you get near another you would slow down another 15% and so on. Anything more than 5 man party would actually make you go slower mounted than walking on foot. A five man party would give 25% speed as long as they stay together, once they split they would again gain speed buffs based on how many was riding together.
The only way you could get this mount would be to have a Gift of Exploration(so at least one toon would have to have 100% map so no cheating on map completion on your first toon. On the other hand once its made it would be account bound and alts could use it to map) one of the gem store mounts like the broom or flying carpet, 250 of the speed boosters from the gem store and one other ingredient like for instance 100 Laurels or 250 Mystic Coins. I am not sure that this should be the actual recipe to upgrade the mount in the Mystic Forge, just laying down some ideas as a place holder.

This idea is based on the fact that the meta-Zerg mentality would not work with these speed buffs that you get from the upgraded mounts. Giving people a reason to run smaller groups to take advantage of the buffs.

Kudos for giving it a go, but the point is moot as Anet will never included mounts into the game

She comes out when I don’t really feel like melee and I’ve pretty much only done the LS with her. I find that she is more interesting to use with all the mordrem to deal with. Sure I could go with my ranger or warrior, perhaps even my guardian who I leveled to 80 but almost never play except for crafting armour, but for some reason my necro is just so interesting to play, despite all the deficiencies in the class

WvW mismatch fix

This is a player problem not a game problem. If a server has a huge number of players that play only wvw only, pve only, or wvw and pve, it’s not up to Anet to moderate how a player choose what they do in game. If your server gets matched up against these sorts f servers then it’s your bad luck.

I play both wvw (though less so) as well as wvw. Are you saying that Anet should decide how I spend my time?

No i’m not, i’m suggesting that if you intend to play WvW then there should be a seperate set of servers for it so server pop like it is in the current system doesn’t decide your servers strength. Then the mega server system handles PvE stuff because mega servers have made what server you chose to play on redundant and only impact WvW and arena based PvP.

In spite of the megaservers, you are nonetheless bound to a particular server. So basically you’re suggesting a “pool” server where all PVErs. So how do they get their WVW map explo achievement? Remove that as a requirement for exploration? The whole point of that is to bring people into wvw.

Some thoughts about the LS

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Azrael.4960

Azrael.4960

I’m sure many people have already thought about this while playing the LS. The point of it, particularly arriving in the Silverwastes (I haven’t spent a lot of time playing it, what with work travel and all), is that a dragon is menacing the world by poking at the waypoints among other things. However, there doesn’t seem to be the required sense of tension, that overarching sense of danger that should accompany a world threatened by yet another dragon.

Ironically, when Scarlet was wreaking havoc having her minions attack various maps, the marionette battle and the Battle for LA, there was the sense that this was a major threat to Tyria. But now that the power behind it is awake, it feels like he’s not much more than a minor nuisance. Sure, you could argue that the big fight might be coming and this is a calm before the storm, but one would think that the dragon would be putting more pressure on the land.

Anyway, from a gameplay perspective, I asked myself how that would be represented in game? That brought back memories of Factions, particularly the lands of the Kurzik and Luxons. For those who never played GW1, what happened was that everyday when you signed in you could look at map and see their lands, which were coloured blue and red, and the ebb and flow of the battles between them.

So I thought, what if Mordy started sending his Mordrem to various locations in Tyria on a grander scale than what Scarlet was doing. Say he would attack two or three maps bordering Dry Top at once, alerts would appear as for Scarlet’s attack and players would have to amass to fight. Unlike Scarlet’s attacks, which when ended didn’t do much except deny loot, Mordy’s attacks denied players the use of way points in the map. These regions of the map would grow redder and redder as he kept up his attacks except for one or two strongholds in each map that are held by Pact or Seraph forces that attacked as bastions for counter attacks (can’t deny players the whole map). To take it to the next step, counterattack or defence events would trigger at these way points, which would encourage players not to zerg (at least not too much, Scarlet’s attacks couldn’t be defeated by zerging but by splitting up). In a way, this is a bit like EOTM I suppose.

That’d be fun for a while

[Suggestion:] Race Concept - The Nierr

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Azrael.4960

Azrael.4960

Besides, asking for another race of cat people when we already have big cats (Charr)? I mean, would people rather play a character that looks like a tabby or a Persian as opposed to say a snow leopard / tiger / cheetah / panther / jaguar / lion.

That being said, it would be nice if the Charr character models were less hunched. Anyone who played GW1 would remember that the caster Charrs walked upright unlike the warrior and ranger Charr who were hunched. I’m sure anyone who has seen a cat rear up on their hind legs would also agree.

Quick aside: the fact that you pulled the Nine Tailed fox is also a big tell of anime influence, although the concept of a nine tailed fox is of course very prevalent in many east asian cultures, Gumiho in Korea, the Kyuubi in Japan and Jiuweihu in China, etc. But it’s a bit too derivative. I’m surprised you didn’t pull the divine creatures of the four compass points, the Seiryuu, Suzaku, Genbu and Byakko (in Japanese)

Back on the topic.
Much of the background you’ve tried to include is covered by the Tengu already. They might be more considered Shintoist than Buddhist.

If you’re gonna design a race, go all out.

How about a dual race of symbiotes? One cannot live without the other. One provides a host body with great strength while the symbiont provides the will and direction. That would give you a rationale for a powerful telepathy within their race but not such that it affects other races. Then you could also do away with the whole gods business.

PvE only players cannot complete Monthly.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Azrael.4960

Azrael.4960

wait, wut? You only need four out of the bunch anyway. This means players who enjoy a variety of different things can get the monthly. You don’t have to do ALL of them to get monthly.

Besides, you might want to rethink AP farming. Once you reach 10k AP from monthly and dailies you stop amassing them anyway, so stretching that out is more meaningful in the long run. Means that every month, you’ll get a little something, something. If you just rushed the AP farm, the only way after that to get chests is to farm the other achievements which can get tedious quickly. Just ask anyone trying to get Giant Slayer. There are only 4 giants in the whole world that count towards that. One is the legendary in Dry top, second is a champion in a cave, third is the champion giant in the Nageling village event and the fourth is in Crucible of Eternity dungeon story mode. Even if you kill all of them, that’s doing the cycle 250 times before getting 1000 kills. Risen giants don’t count.

Please help me learn melee

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Azrael.4960

Azrael.4960

Moving out of their attacks generally does not work unless you move out of their strike range. Also it depends on whther their attacks cleave in which case the enemy strike zone is larger.

When you reach 80 the primary defense most people will speak of is to take down your target as fast possible. This is easily achieved by traiting and equipping berserker gear.

For a ranger, the two melee weapons, sword and axe habe a variety of opions for avoiding damage. The sword auto attack features an evade in the chain, skill 2 is an evade as is 3. All of these require good timing to use effectively and that comes with practice. The great sword has a closig skill in number 3 which is also an evade. Skill 4 is a block and 5 is a stun. Depensing on which one uou are using you will have access to 5 ways to avoid damage including your two dodges.

Effective melee is all abouy practice and waching for ememy tells. All of the big attacks will be projected either through AOE which is visible on the ground or have unique animations . knowing these is key to minimizing damage.

However, the biggest tip you can get as a melee player is to know when to retreat. Being melee does not mean you are the first one into a fight and the last one out. Only the hravy classes really have that luxury. If things are going bad never feel obliged to stay and die. Back away, pop your heal, switch to a ranged weapon, when you’re set switch back to your melee weapon and get stuck in again. Unlike traditional mmos combat in gw2 tends to be very fluid so you need to learn to adapt to the situation. For instance if you’re moving around too much and draw more aggro. In some locations uou can even use the terrain to uour advantage. Big tree stumps and rocks or a short drop can all be used to block a big attack. Standing and fighting is not a good option. You’ll simply take too much damage.

Afraid that’s that the nature of highly popular servers. Maybe there’ll be another transfer window in the not too distant future.

On the flipside, you could wvw for a lower tier server (since upper tier servers are inevitably going to be dominated by latency and lag issues) where there is certainly enough space for your whole family to play together.

As for RP, despite being in a lower tier server there would be nothing preventing you all from RPing in TC while wvwing for a different server.

Er, with the mega server system not to mention the unified guild system now being on different servers has very little meaning (apart from wvw).

In the recent update, Anet made it so that guild member contributions towards a guild’s influence and merits were universal regardless of your home world.

The mega server heavily screed the RP player base because no matter where you go now, RPs will be surrounded by non-RPs any way.

Basically if you want to be in the same server as your guild or your family you have to party up and have them join you in the map. As you don’t care about wvw anyway, this is only a minor inconvenience

If you talk to the NPC’s the prisoners are in there for a variety of crimes against the legions. Given that the Charr respond to little but brute power and force, it’s not really much of a big deal that they need to be whipped to keep them in line.

Charr are like Klingons in that respect. To gain their (grudging) respect, you just had to show that you’re stronger than they are. No real big deal.

If you can get your hands on all ascended trinkets, amulet, accessories and rings, even if they’re not infused that’s 25 AR which will take you up to lvl 29 fractals. That will give you plenty of relics to farm towards the back piece.

It’s better to keep moving up the levels of fractals as you get more relic drops as you go up. When I ran fractals regularly (when I still had a PC) I would do 29,38, 49 most days. That gives me 213 relics in just those three runs. I’ve done so many that I’ve kitted out 5 characters with 3 fractal 20 slot boxes each and all have fractal capacitors. All are ascended and 2 are infused.

Or Anet could just shift the rewards over to completion/failure of the event rather than the champions.

Condition Stacking – I solved it… mostly

Rather than come up with convoluted mechanics and systems, lets take it a back a step and have a look at it another way.

The biggest problem with multiple condition users, from a hardware perspective, is the sheer number of calculations being forced on the servers.
Condition specialists want to be in a position to contribute to the fight but their damage is spread over a very long duration.

Instead of being susceptible to conditions like standard targets, HP sponge targets, world bosses, legendary and certain champions would have an extra function to their defiance buff. As it stands, defiant stacks are dependent on the number of players present. I’ve seen stacks go up to 70+ meaning CC’s are pointless unless they’re coordinated across the whole mob which is impossible.

What I propose is that degeneration conditions that can go up to 25 stacks, i.e bleed, torment, confusion would stack as normal but as soon as the cap is hit, a stack of defiance is removed. Given the speed with which bleed builds up in particular, this will make condition users contribute to the fight much more effectively than before as they would have to constantly rotate their condition skills to keep the stacks flowing and thus the damaging ticking.

To counteract this, the target would scale up as normal depending on the number of players in the event but the number of defiant stacks increase by 50%, although I could see this going up by 75% or even 100% if the stack removal was too efficient. The removal of the last defiance stack would have the same effect as usual, i.e. target is vulnerable to CC’s

For vulnerability, I wouldn’t suggest much in the way of a changing anything. It already scales up the damage done to the target by 25% and given how many players are present, that’s already a metric tonne of kittens being dropped. Poison and Burn don’t really need to be changed as their duration is generation very short

I’ve read that if you infuse one of the rings, don’t ask me how you do that I don’t know, but if you do according to what I read you can then wear both your Rings.

This doesn’t work!

Yes it does, I put an infused red ring and a standard one onto my thief. Works fine as they’re each unique in a wierd way. I later acquired the other zerk ring and moved the infused one to another character
