Unreal Engine 4

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Beldin.5498

Beldin.5498

Short answer: No. Absolutely not.

GW2 uses its own engine, and to redo the game with Unreal would basically mean remaking the entire game. There are systems they could carry over, of course, but the whole thing would be extremely expensive, tying up artists and programmers for a long time.

UE4 has excellent lighting, among other features, but it’s just not practical here. I think Anet would rather continue working with their own engine, developing new content, than the massive amount of work it would take to redevelop the entire world. There are other considerations as well, like how much UE4 would raise the system requirements to get the results you’re imagining. Then you have licensing the engine, retraining everyone to work in the new engine, etc.

I think the Unreal Engine would make the game a lot more responsive and stable. The GW2 engine is terribly written.

Have you ever played an MMO with an Unreal Engine or CryEngine when you
had big zerg fights ?
In Lineage 2 when i played it i had to turn down all setting long before i reached
a town because else i got a big lagfest for the next 10 minutes.

The same in AION for big zerg fights where you had slideshow most of the time.

All those shooters are optimized for a fixed amount of objects on the screen
but with more or less unlimited players they go down the same like any other
engine. And with only 5 player on the screen GW2 also runs fantastic.

They did a 32-bit client to maximize “accessibility” but let’s keep it real here: no one has used 32-bit for many years even Windows XP had a 64-bit version.

If you look through all the OOM crashlogs in the technical help forums you will
be astounded how much of them result from people that still use 32-bit windows.

And (nearly) nobody used XP-64 since it was never planned for gaming and
had bad driver support. Personally i started with Vista-64 because i played
Age of Conan and there we also had a lot of OOM problems with 32-Bit Windows.

I’ve tried downloading the driver with both IE (I know it sucks) and Google Chrome. Both times, the files are downloaded, the installer goes through the process of checking my system for compatibility, asks which install want, express or custom, and then proceeds to install the driver. However, about 4% into the download, my screen goes black, then it reappears and everything is about 200% bigger than before the download. The install fails, citing no particular reason, it just says that it failed, and then my screen goes black again and my screen resumes it’s normal size. It’s super weird. I may take a video and try to post it.

First .. so your download works, but don’t let the file be executed automatically
but save it, so you can retry the installation without redownloading the file.

Second .. first unistall your current driver, then reboot .. and then try installing
the older drivers.

Third .. use custom install and only install the drivers and needed stuff and leave
out every other useless NVidia crap.

How are you all enjoying Pre. collections?

The biggest mistake that Anet made with precursor crafting was that they tied the gold value of the items required directly to the market. They’ve essentially gone and fixed the prices for precursors permanently, based on some average or snapshot of the current market.
They’ve prevented Venom from ever going over 100gold or so, even should they totally revamp underwater combat and do an expansion where we fight Bubbles/Steve/name-of-the-month. Venom is now fixed at roughly 100gold (I’ve not made it, just going by rough current tp price).
Bifrost, no matter how undesirable it may become over time, for whatever reason, will always be around 1000g on the TP.

That exactly was my biggest question already years ago when they talked to
first time about the precursor hunt .. how will the set the value ? Will they
crash every pre to maybe 50-100g .. or do they something where even an
underwater weapon pre would be worth around 500g or whatever.

And i think that question was also the main problem why it took so long
and also i expected in the end that it would not really be cheaper than
buying a precursor from the AH .. especially if you give the time you use
also a worth of something like 10g/hour.

If you want less challenge tyria has about 25 maps already for ya.

Keep in mind that all this new content is a payed expansion, wouldn’t be an issue if it was added in the core game like SW was for example.

Everyone payed the money for the expansion, not just a certain group of people. And you can’t blame them for that, the expansion was never advertised to be challenging in it’s entirety, just that it will have challenging content.

This.

I wonder what would sales be if ANet was clear its hardore only expansion, and if youre not “hardcore” yo have “other 25 areas to play in”

ANet shold have been frank about it and say in advance that HoT is:

- annoying (“difficult”)
- super grindy
- group only focused
- full of “prepare to have fun” and empty of “fun”

And on top of that
- a nightmare to navigate and explore

Heck .. a lot of people already hated Dry Top for that.

And yes .. i payed 100 € for content i don’t like to play at all at the moment, and
i didn’t even got some new skins for that. So if it leaves that way i will NOT buy
any other expansion for GW2.

I have been playing since GW2 launch with my settings on max with not a single problem ever.

Now with HoT my game crashes roughly every two hours, it seems to happen in highly dense player areas such as Auric Basin, it also happened during Mad King says.

I am also getting some weird graphical bugs, for example my back item Wings of Dwayna randomly disappears sometimes, today my weapon on my back disappeared.

I have played in highly populated areas with not a single problem for years, i was even stable during that big one time Karka event near launch.

Please help?

Turn down your settings, specially character model limit. The HoT zones
are bigger than the old zone and i guess for that reason they eat up more memory.

Oh .. i just see you still have 32-Bit OS .. that is the real problem.

A bit weird that a big game like GW2 doesn’t support 32-Bit operating systems, but hmm… If you’re really sure of that, then do you know of any ways to ‘solve’ this without getting myself a new operating system? I don’t have the money to buy myself a new OS atm.
Aren’t there smart ways around it somehow? Because everything works fine apart from GW2. So HoT would become a bit expensive if I’d only buy a new OS just for that.

It does support 32-Bit windows .. the problem is 32-Bit Windows does not support
the amount of memory that a lot of modern MMOs need.

I had already OOM crashes when i played Age of Conan 8 years ago, and upgraded
from XP to Vista-64 at that time.

Else all you can do is to minimize your graphics settings. And even with 64-Bit
Windows the game runs OOM when people have everything maxed, so there
also should be at least character model limit be on medium.

Also .. if your Windows key is from Microsoft you can download a 64-bit ISO and
install it with your key for free.

And how many % of the playerbase do you think solo Arah ?

shaden, what are you current in-game settings? I’m referring to things like character limit, and such. This sounds like an out of memory error, which is rather common with Cider due to it emulating 32-bit Windows.

Ouch .. the big zones of HoT seem to make 32-Bit windows crash fast even with
very low settings. So i fear the times of Cider are counted.

Since actual Macs are in the end normal intel PCs, isn’t it simply possible to install
a dual-but of Mac-OS and Windows on such a machine and simply play under
Windows. Or is it just that Mac Users hate MS so much ?

And no, this is no insult or whatever .. i really ask out of pure curiosity.

The game client itself is 32bit. Going to 64 bit windows client doesn’t magically fix anything, the application itself will only be capable of using so much RAM 2GB native or 4GB if using large space (gw2 is LAA so it’s 4GB~ max)..

2 GB or 4 GB is still a big different. I remember EQ2 already had problem with
the big zones they invented in Rise of Kunark 8 years ago. And later when i
played Age of Conan i bought 64-Bit Vista to get rid of constant crashes.

So yes .. it will magically fix a lot .. however there are still problems under

IT WILL BE FIXED Don't worry people.

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Beldin.5498

Beldin.5498

The only way they can fix it is by making the new elites require no more than 100 skill points in total. Then they can make the new skill challenges in the new maps give out 1 skill point instead of 10. Which will mean they can reduce their difficulty to be in line with the skill challenges in the vanilla maps. Anything less that this will not go over well.

+1 to this.
And also they need to make the maps again be soloable also for people that not
play Dark Souls and solo Lupi and Fractals 50 all day long.

Or other said it should be FUN to explore those maps and not feel like a nighmare
of work where you are happy when you never ever have to see those areas again.

So they’re going to fix the change from casual friendly to “standard MMO number 1406510”? Because this is one disappointing expansion, group required, grind required, no casuals allowed…

Even in all standard MMOs you can do most of the open world content solo with
no problems. EQ2 had masses of group content in vanilla but that was removed

it is a big issue. 2 sets is absurdly low for an expansion they worked on for a year and a half. the reason we love the core game is because of the vast amount of customization we had (5 races/8 classes/30+ armor sets for each weight class…)….now with hot it’s outfits and one class.

Yeah .. we didn’t get any new sets in the gem-shop since we got the wardrobe, beside
the carapace set, so i expected that we at least get quite some new sets now.

But that together with the unfun unsoloable content where you have to grind

The entire Jungle zone is full of mobs that spam attacks that one shot players. Just one mistake or miss timed dodge and your instantly out the fight.

Isn’t an encounter where you have to know what you are doing and act on that knowledge with good timing, without mistake, the essence of challenge and skill based play?

A mob where you can ignore or not execute techniques properly and still win is kind of the antithesis of skill based play and challenge.

The problem is, that in open world you have also often respawns while you fight.
So what would work pretty good in an instance, where you have place to dodge
and have maybe cleared the surrounding area before a hard fight, doesn’t work
in open world where you maybe also have cleared the area, then start the fight
and then when that mushroom knocked you down and you just stand up and
wantt to continue, a beetle vet spawns with 3 small beetles, that all knock you
down again and again .. and then the mushrooms knock you down again ..

yeah .. thats really much fun .. the challenge not to smash the keyboard into your

At least acknowledge the OOM crashing

It’s pretty frustrating and from what I read around here and on reddit it is also rather prevalent.

“Try reducing the graphics”. I’m already on minimum. It doesn’t change much. Instead of crashing every 1min it crashes every 5.

If you crash OOM with all settings on min its time to say goodbye to your ancient
32-bit windows and install a 64-bit OS.

There is a memory leak and it is a problem. I can literally watch it. With task manager open on a side monitor, I can watch the GW2.exe process use more, and more, and more memory. I’ve got 16 GB of ram, so I can play for a good chunk of time before it catches me. I feel for those with 8 GB or less…

Anything with a large amount of “things” going on, like world boss fights, and EotM/WvW shows this happening quickly.

Its not a “leak”, its called memory fragmentation.

Timed Hero Challenges Impossible w/o Group

This sounds like a massive over-reaction by ANet to forum complaints about how the game lacked difficulty. The problem with deciding to make something as mundane as a Hero Point challenge a large herd of players is that any smaller increment of players finds the point frustrating. This is going to be problematic to any late adopters.

I’m fine with the game offering more challenge. However, there’s a lot of room between a Hero Challenge in the base game and what’s being described here.

People wanted challenging content in dungeons, but Anet fired their dungeon guy like two years ago and have gone on record stating they want players out of dungeons (hence the major dungeon nerf). I think its fairly obvious they want people to mindlessly zerg. As to why, I haven’t a clue. Its the most boring and uninspired gameplay this game has to offer, and if they ever do make it difficult for people to mindlessly zerg the content, they won’t do it.

The problem is that zerging is fine on wide open maps, but not really in a nightmare
of a maze where once you fall down somewhere its impossible to get back to the zerg.

So now we got "challenging " content on open world maps that makes it impossible
to solo, so nothing for explorators, why the map design also makes it hard for zergs.
So in the end all thats left are maybe some masochists that like to die every 20 feet.

And while we’re at it, it sucks that A-Net is just making things harder by increasing numbers instead of actually working out ways to make it harder.

Its not just ANet .. it happens in ALL MMOs everytime people cry for “moar challenge”.
Sadly i can write that in forums 10.000 times and nobody listens and i get only flamed
by the hardcore crowd. And only when its too late suddenly other players start to
write that the “moar challenge” is maybe not sooo great.

Oh also, we not only have more HPs here, we also have the “beeing disabled forever”
challenge when a shroom and a beetle vet play bowling with you in a small way
where you can’t dodge and lie on the floor till dead.

Lets all Hero Points be gated by Raids i say .. everything else is not a challenge and
would maybe make player not leave the game. Oh and helping other at those
points should make you loose exp ..

I think ArenaNet set the expansion maps preparing for a large flood of players… But the floor never came.

I’m really curious to see, some months from now, the NCSoft quarterly report showing the sales of HoT. I wonder if it sold a lot less than ArenaNet/NCSoft were expecting.

Ahh .. they will be happy to have 20-30 players left that really enjoy raiding .. at
least for 2 months .. who needs all those casuals that want to explore maps without
beeing killed by overpowered mobs all the time, when you try to do it alone.

How would you rate the HoT Fun Factor?

I’d give it a 3.
The story was fun, up until “You need to unlock XX mastery to continue” coupled with the inability to unlock my elite spec.

I’ve just stopped playing entirely.

Pretty much the same here. I’m having a lot less fun than I was having prior to the expansion releasing. I’m thinking of heading away for a few months, and seeing if I can enjoy it again after a good break.

Same here, haven’t played at all yesterday and am thinking about taking a break
and look for other games at the moment.

Client Crashing constantly [Merged]

@Healix,
I’m actually crashing a few seconds in, especially when I’m in a crowded area. It also often occurs during loading screens.

@Beldin,
I’ve no idea how I can upgrade to 64 bit. I suppose that means I need a new operating system? And I don’t imply that someone from ANet should come to my house and solve all my issues, I just need some more simple language explaining to me what to do. I often have people explaining stuff with terms that are like chinese to me. Just a bit more basic step-by-step information and I’m sure I can pretty well handle things on my own.

If your Windows Serial Number is directly from Microsoft you can download
a 64-Bit Version of your Windows version at ISO, burn it to a DVD and install
it from that DVD without having to buy a new OS.

But yes, you have to install a new OS in the end, you can’t update a 32-Bit version
to 64-bit.

Ok, it seems Vista is no longer downloadable at MS since Febuary :

Most of the events and champ skill points are soloable, it is just much much more difficult then it used to be. I’ve done several of them solo, but it is much easier to type into say or map chat for a few people. Also, this content diverges from the content in the rest of tyria intentionally. They don’t want people soloing the hardest content, that is fine.

RAIDS are the hardest content .. they made that specially for you people that
cried for harder content.
Open world is NOT the hardest content, and nobody wanted to have open world
as hardest content.

Heck even Everquest 2 learned 1 year after release that nearly nobody played all
those group-content mobs in the open world and removed most of them to make
most of the open world soloable. Can’t understand why ANet now tries to copy
one oft the failures why EQ2 had so much less players than WoW.

I wouldn’t even complain about grinding the hero points if they were at least
soloable and don’t need a group .. and also don’t give any reward to players that
already made them, so nobody is interested helping you.

Have you tried opening an LFG to get hero points?

Nope, since i normally like to play at my own pace and take often a break because
of different reasons. And so the whole design of HoT zones are simply totally
unmotivating for me since alone you are stuned, knocked down and whatever
all the time especially when a beetle vet with 3-4 adds adds to a mushroom vet
with also 3-4 adds .. and you can’t do anything than lying on the floor waiting
for your death.

So as long as Necros don’t get skills that give 1,5 minutes stability ever 2 minutes
or whatever, my motivation to go into those areas is -1

Why do you try to win fights against enemies that obviously seem to be too hard for you? Wait for some other players to arrive or go somewhere else. Not everything is meant to be done alone on the first try.
And alot of people don’t mind teammates going afk for a bit. Just tell them upfront you might have to leave from time to time. They will probably just happily keep doing other stuff as a team of 4.

Because i just wanted to reach the second WP in the new area and those mobs #
were in the way, and there was no way to get around them ?

And yeah .. after that i left that area since i saw nothing i could do there and also
no player around to help .. oh one player was there while i lay dead on the ground
but he just tried to train through them .. and had invis as a thief

And also i already stood 15-20 minutes at the first WP and was looking for players
running in that direction ..

My issue is when you spen 20 minutes navigating to a hero point and then its a 5 man minimum group challenge which when attempted you lose and cant get back for another 30 minutes of climbing agian.

If they just simply made the Hero challenges soloable the game would be fine as is. I shouldn’t have to have 4 people minimum to play the game.

Open wold should simply be soloable at 90% or whatever like in the old zones
and group events should take place in easy to access areas and give rewards to
all players that participate ..

I mean even in a guild how often would you bother other players to help you
on all your alts to come to help you at hero points that are hard to reach and
were they get nothing as reward ?

But maybe at some point we have hero point sellers ..

I feel like you have complained about group content before and I said the same thing and recommended you find yourself another game.

So here it is again. MMORPG. MMO = Massive Online Multiplayer. The concept still seems to glaze over people.

I REALLY don’t want another Orr where mobs are mowed down and there is no challenge whatsoever and that’s what people got when they complained about having to cooperate with others. Content that was easily solo-able therefore making any sort of grouping USELESS.

You CLEARLY do not want an MMORPG, PLEASE go find another game.

You still have not learned what Multi Player Online means.

Its like in the real world .. you don’t invite every hobo you see on the street
or in the train into your home all day to have a party. Even if tthey live in
the same world.
