Healer + Tank, ever a possibility?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

So yes, GW2 does have healer but they are more like medic (well trained soldier but also have medic skill) rather than a hospital doctor the not even able to protect himself.

Something like a “GW2 healer” – for example a fullzerk meta-ele blasting his waterfield – would in other games be described as a full-dps char. Other games also got blinds and other cc on dps roles. That doesn’t turn a dps role into a supporter.

That is why people need to step out of the trinity mind….

Doing damage is a base element for every player, because every player is a soldier, they are supposed to contribute by killing enemies. Besides killing, they are supposed more or less to bring some team support to the table.

Just like modern elite soldiers, special forces, they can flank, suppressive fire, first aid, decoy, infiltrate, snipe, breach depends on the situation.

i said this 3 years ago, and i will saying again.

GW2 combat is much closer to modern soldier concept.
You won’t find a soldier geared in full armor and stand upfront absorb damage. Their tactics is suppress and flank. Convert into GW2, suppressive fire is our CC, blind etc. Flanking is our dps.

You thought everyone in GW2 is dps? So as modern soldiers, every gun they used is the same lethal, that means the role of flank and suppressive is interchangable depends on the situation.

You said we need healer like modern soldier medic. I said yes but medic weapon supposed to be as lethal as everyone right? You won’t bring a doctor into the heat of a fire fight. So yes, GW2 does have healer but they are more like medic (well trained soldier but also have medic skill) rather than a hospital doctor the not even able to protect himself.

As great as this game is, I’ve just never enjoyed playing a DPS class. Even the classes that are more on the “support” side are still not really enough to quench that thirst to be the one helping your allies.

Is there any possibility at all that they will add healing or tank roles and make combat in the game reflect on that?

PS. Ritualist when?!

The game is great because they don’t have healer and tank.

I prefer they stay as is, though i don’t mind if healing become more appealing, but tank is definite “NO” to me.

Never enjoy any combats that require a tank.

I disagree. The game is great because it has no subs, and have dynamic events and gear tiers are not gating content.

the lack of trinity roles is not a great element of GW2.

The lack of trinity roles is not a great element for someone who cannot adjust their mindset to adapt the GW2 combat system. But indeed, it is the best element for someone who tired of the brain dead trinity combat mode.

I am all for active combat style like GW2, doesn’t matter what your gear is, as long as you got the skill to avoid dead, you are good to go.

Specializations... Killing the game?

People here saying that getting rid of “worthless options” or only having access to optimized builds is a good thing… How so!

Eh… because it means more diversity?

If you got 16000 spec combinations, of which ~9 are sensible, or you got 810 spec combinations of which 12 are sensible, you just increased actual diversity by 33%.

Now, ideally these numbers converge. The less things the devs have to balance, the more balanced the remaining ones will be. In other words, in the ideal case at some point you’ll have only 40 or 50 possible ways to build your char, but all are viable.

This is correct.

Not to mention there will be more speciality in the future, the overall build diversity will increase gradually.

Specializations... Killing the game?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Crossaber.8934

Killing or not, it depends on the whole player base preferences.

But as how I see the change, it is a necessary move in order to push forward into the speciality stage. If there are only 1 speciality after all, the change is not necessary and really hurting the game. But i can see the potential in it that when the 2nd, 3rd, 4….. 5 6 7th speciality released, there are unlimited build in the future.

Also it will be the easy platform for new weapon implement, whenever a new weapon released along with the corresponding trait line which no longer required to tweak our existing traits like the pre 6/23 patch. As a result will be a win win situation, with a small cost (removed the possibility to make use of half trait line).

My opinion is it is not a killing move, it is a necessary move for greater good which also come with a small cost. Give and take sort of stuff.

Greedy for selling expansion for $50, allow new players to access the core for free so they don’t have to buy the core to start. Greedy for free updates for over 2 years, living story season 1 and 2, festivefuls and such where every game out there charge $10 for every dlc.

The issue is dungeon, not warrior weapons.

If pve encounter require more CC than dps, you will see mace and hammer more often, if pve encounter require mobility dps than stacking dps, you will see axe more often.

New profession: The Farmer

Crossaber.8934

I start this topic because i wanna go over the meta and trinity topic, i m one of many who like the trinity, and i was thinking for alot of thime this game lack of this.
Maybe is true, maybe not or maybe both, i’m start thinking the problem is the lack of content, in other games you have tiers of dungeons or they are the same but it scale difficulty when u became stronger, but usually u dont master them lke in this game because after a while u do other dungeons for have better rewards…
So we will get elitist on speed run, ppl will be kicked from istance etc etc, because everyone wanna do it faster as possible, elementalist war, guard, thief etc etc are fake profession, because everyone is become The Farmer, speed run everything make gold, farm maps etc etc
In other games i enjoyed the classes, the role, here everything are feeling like a way to farm, ppl even sell path!!!

I hope with HOT and specialization we should enjoy more the content without die under the “meta farmer community”

Looks like you are in a wrong boat, Exit is that way, please….

DO NOT bring trinity, gear treadmill toxic into GW2, they are more problematic than speed run, farmers….

The solution i see Anet is making more open world contents like SW that nobody cares your gear/build selection, no body sell VW, if HoT contents favor other gear sets, players will adjust their gear/build choice.

Estimating Value

Crossaber.8934

Different players got different preferences.

I bought HoT because i want to advance my characters further like masteries and personal stories. Also by the experiences of the latest pve map mechanics directions like SW, it is similar to what i have been long waiting for. And it was great news that the new zone will have similar directions.

My play time is not as stable as many players here. From couple hours to couple mins all depends my work and family needs. i need comtents that do not require to party up so i am roll in and roll out as i see fit without kittening anyone.

What i see valuable in HoT may or maynot produce the same value on other players, if it is not what you want, just wait and see.

When Guild Wars 3 is announced, how would a $15 subscription model with a major expansion release every 30 months affect your decision to buy the game and why?

I’d put it that way – if GW2 has been announced with that subscription model, i wouldn’t be playing the game now. And that’s even after considering that i have actually paid more than i would in such case.

Wow, that’s really interesting.

Is it the term ‘subscription’ that put’s you off, even though you would be paying less to play over the 5-6 year period (assuming you purchase the expansion and the next expansion is 2-3 years away)

Issue is subscription. Yes.
Many players like me who enjoy the freedom to play or not after a permanent buy out model even it could be higher price at first. It felt suck if i have to keep paying to gain access right.

The price for GW2 and expansion is fine to me.

I think gather like minded players and play through contents with tanky and healy build is viable, not the meta, not the majority; still able to finish contents without problem.

It is much better than contents that enforce a tank and healer, which result parties without tank and healer cannot complete.

OP, can you see the differences?

GW2 allow parties to play soft trinity, viable but not the meta; trinity mmo don’t allow parties to have no tank and healer…. the choice is there, majority player just don’t prefer.

What about setup a guild names [Trinity] and find guildees shared the same taste.

Lots of really interesting responses and to be honest I am fairly surprised.

It would appear that the only contentious issue is the ‘suspension’ of the core game account when expansions are released. If you take this away from the proposal, what we are left with is a discussion about pricing that ignores the main benefit that this model achieves, namely that all active players of the game have access to all the content available.

Obviously at the moment this is an emotive subject when applied to GW2 and HOT, so to try and bring some objectivity to the discussion, please allow me to alter the the context of the question slightly:

When Guild Wars 3 is announced, how would a $15 subscription model with a major expansion release every 30 months affect your decision to buy the game and why?

Interesting question.

I for myself don’t find sub based game worth it. My game play habit is buy out (even higher than average retail price is okay) and play any time, on and off, don’t ask me for more money unless it is expansion.

Gaming is entertainment, i really don’t enjoy pay a sub and have to rush contents / stack my play time in order to well worth my payment. If there is any reason besides the game discontinued, will stop me from continue playing, it is a no go for me.

For example, free mmo that require to remake of gear whenever an expansion/dlc hit, i will be never able to chase the carrot when more play time is required. I played another free mmo that end up i need to swipe my credit card in order to make up-to-date gear for the new released contents.

I prefer the business model like current GW2, no sub, no gear treadmill, buy out expansion etc. I expect GW3 remain the same or some improvements here and there.

OP, i understand your frustration.

I have this similar frustration in other MMO as a hybrid player. My character was not wanted, i cannot heal, i cannot tank, i can do good dps but not as good as most dpser out there. I can join high end dungeon because my guild leader take me along. I wa s being carried over, i was not actually wanted….

My last fight in that game, i was being late to the world boss fight my party is doing, and i missed the debriefing. My heavy armor character can’t even take one hit from the world boss and bleed to death because healer are too busy to heal my guild leader tank, while all the rest dps step aside to watch the fight. (i missed the debriefing that dps should stay back and watch…. LOL) The fight was actually done by 3 players, a tank and 2 healers. The tank fight the boss, a healer heal the tank and the 2nd healer heal the 1st healer. What is the point of bringing 2 dpser for all they do is stand outside and watch?

Since then i left that game and start looking for mmo that don’t rely on healer and tank to survive a fight.

OP, you are more lucky as you can find tons of game that support your play style, while GW2 is the only bread i suitable for me.

The games free to play, you don’t pay a Sub fee each month like you do with FFXIV or WoW, you don’t pay for updates other than future expansions, even the living story was free if you logged in just ONCE in a 2 week window, i really can’t see how people are still complaining about this. If you think it’s too much, then don’t buy it, but considering how I’ve not had to pay a single cent for any update this game has given me for the past 3 years, the cost of the expansion is next to nothing for me. Especially when Blizzard put their expansions up for £49.99 while still requiring £9 a month.

And no, for anyone who’s going to say “I buy gems”, it doesn’t contribute as an argument because you don’t NEED to buy them.

I purchased the £80 version of the game, because i want to support Anet, but let’s do some math.

I’ve played the game since the 3 day headstart, i can’t be bothered to log in to the game to actually check how many days, it’s over 1000, but for the sake of this equation, let’s just go with 1000.

Now let’s figure out how much money each day has cost me compared to the £80 expansion pack i bought.

80 / 1000 = 0.08p per day.

Not even a penny. Not even a tenth of a penny. I can literally find more on the floor outside each day than this game has cost me.

Did you even bother to read the original post – there was no complaint, no moaning, just an idea for an alternative business model for discussion.

To clarify: I am not suggesting that at this point in the game’s life cycle adopting this model would be viable – it wouldn’t, as has been pointed out, it would cause to much of a kitten storm. But if this had been the model from launch, if you had known that when the first major expansion was released 2-3 years down the line from launch, a nominal subscription would be required to continue playing, I will ask the same question:

Have you or will you be buying the expansion:
If Yes: Would you prefer to pay $15 rather than $50?
If No: Would you have purchased at $15?

Additionally:
If this had been the model at launch, would the fact that your subscription would expire in 2-3 years (if you didn’t pay a further nominal payment for the expansion) have stopped you from purchasing the original game?

I would pay for $50 for HoT and the all the free updates before next expansion, also keep my alt acc without HoT active.

I may or may not like the future expansions after HoT, and who knows if i am going to buy the expansion afterward. But I do like the existing GW2 that i really want to keep playing even i decided not to purchase the further expansion.

Why suspend my acc if i decided not to buy expansion.

This is totally not acceptable.

Hey, peeps

The current daily systems is too easy, in my opinion. Total no challenges. You can be finished within 5 minutes. The current daily systems is always the same.

Old daily and monthly systems was much more difficult. You had to do more, much more. You needed to do things in WvW, PVE, PVP and the world. And do not forget the jumping puzzles.

Give people a major challenge.
Like this:

1: Complete at least three world events
2: Finish Fractals level 30/40
3: Do at least three dungeons
4: Win two PVP battles
5: Capture least two towers in WvW

Reward for completing 25 ap points, 5 gold and weapon or armor piece.

This give people a nice and funny challenge, cost hours to complete it

Cool suggestion.

What about remain unchanged.

i actually like this idea, make it so it is better to bring a healer rather than forced to bring one. Never liked the contents that force a party to bring tank and healer. Your suggestion actually suggest party to bring supportive role just incase.

Also if aggro will not break unless foes are dead will also help to make healer role more desired.

We already have supportive roles. Reflects, aegis, condi cleansing, banners, might, fury, swiftness, stealth, defiance stripping, stability, quickness, and more.

I seriously don’t understand why there are so many people who think the literal only possible way to support somebody in an MMO is to cast healing spells on them. There are already classes which you only take for supportive roles, like guardians and mesmers for example. Both have fairly below average DPS, mesmers especially, but we still take them in groups!

Warriors have lower output than elementalists and thieves do but we still want one in nearly every dungeon because they bring so much offensive support.

Why do we need to encourage people to use healer builds in dungeons? You can already do that but they’re not necessary when players know how to play because they can heal themselves. Why is this bad?

If you want to play a build that focuses on heals, make your own groups for it and find likeminded people. You’ll find them way less in abundance, however, because this game is not a holy trinity based game. It should stay this way, as that’s why we’re all on GW2 afterall – for something different than that. The only way to change this is to change much more than the simple design suggestions outlined in the OP of this thread.

If you follow any of my post, i am a hater of trinity.

But enhancing healing usefulness doesn’t mean dedicated healer, or requesting trinity.

It is great that Reflects, aegis, condi cleansing, banners, might, fury, swiftness, stealth, defiance stripping, stability, quickness is very useful, but why not also adding healing into the list?

I hate a party being locked into healing and tanking style as much as you do. I don’t want healing to be the only method to help the team. I prefer hybrid build to be much more desired.

Hybrid build like warrior shout heal will become more useful, not only PS build is desired. As long as we have no dedicated healer and tank, i don’t opposite to enhance the needs of every supportive action in party contents.

No tank, No healer, No trinity

It’s the players – not necessarily the encounter that push this.

No, it’s the encounter.
The game was never built around a required healer/tank, but the devs intended to built it around a required soft trinity were at least a player was supposed to stand there dodging/mitigating/blocking/kiting the damage. Stacking was never meant to be META. In that scenario regenerations and heals would have proven more useful because it would have been harder to avoid all damage, but still they wouldn’t be needed.
TL;DR= the encounters are designed around not needing dedicated tanks, healers, or anything but dps weapons.

It really seems to be both.

To those saying it’s the encounter – I ask you this :

Was GW2 easy at launch?

Is GW2 easy for a party of 5 newcomers even if fully geared in exotic and level 80?

No, i still remember there are a lot of players that prefer soldier or knight gear in dungeon. Its almost 3 years now, the dungeons are getting old….

I’m not saying GW2 is a bad game, I still believe GW2 is the best MMO on the market to date, but I think it’s a little harsh that new players get the core game free.

By that logic it would be more beneficial for me to create a new account, buy the expansion on a new account and start from the beginning, then sell my excisting account for a fairly large amount of money. Which is a breach of terms and conditions I know. But that is the part I’m unsure of. I doubt the core game is “Free” with the expansion as the devs stated. Cause if so this has to be up there as the worlds most expensive expansion, the cost is only just shy of being able to pre-order Fallout 4… No expansion should match prices of full game releases.

Ah, I know this is just an opinion of mine, but the price that you think is reasonable shouldn’t be reliant on what a new player gets the game for. Ask yourself, and be honest, do you really think it is more valuable for you to make a new account and only play the expansion with that one? You have no materials, no gold, no achievement points, no map completion, no Guild rep, no PvP ranks, no WvW ranks, no dungeon completion, no fractal completion, no gear, and no weapons. A new player is not getting the equivalent of an account that you already have.

The core game currently only exists in the sense that there are still codes for the core game out there, but Anet won’t sell it again because HoT is becoming the core game. It is a different philosophy about expanding the game than most people are used to. New players are not getting two new games; they are getting one new game.

If your complaint is only about the price and the content revealed not being worth it, that is valid. If your complaint is that new players are “getting more”, then it is a bit disingenuous.

Thats right, I will say all the free updates, the living world season 1 and 2 experiences are so much more worth than the free core game. New players won’t able to taste a bit. GW2 is a game that the earlier you buy, the more joy and value you can receive. I expect HoT will give the same experiences, free update, free living story season 3 etc if I start early.

OP, you can wait until HoT discount and miss out all the fun. Your money, your call.

Don’t you know it is logical and okay to not buy anything that you think is not worth the price. But it is also logical and okay how much Anet want to sell their product.

You don’t buy the expansion, actually nobody will think you are cheap or poor, the fact is nobody care. You can buy anytime you see fit, and i actually hope to see you in HoT.

No tank, No healer, No trinity

Trinity or no Trinity, it doesn’t matter, the balance in this game between classes is clearly broken. In a trinity game the developers usually design it for roles, if you’re a healer you’re not going to be good at tanking ok for dps, if you’re a tank you can soak up damage but you can’t heal and ok for dps, if you’re a dps you can’t heal or tank but you have survival skills to help keep you alive.

What does GW2 do? give everyone access to dps, you have your own heals, you have dodge for survival, but it’s obvious not every class is built with balance in mind. You got the super regen warriors who can dish out dps and tank if they wanted. You got the elementalist who can do all three roles at the same time. You got thieves who can dish out burst dps while in stealth for most of a fight. Mesmer who can take you in one combo while being in stealth for 20+ seconds at a time. etc.

At this point I would welcome trinity roles because at least there was a semblance of balance between them, although I highly doubt anet could even manage to make that work seeing the bang up job they’re doing with the current class combat balance. No one cares about support or tanking in GW2, it’s all about dps, that’s it.

By your statement of “Mesmer who can take you in one combo while being in stealth for 20+ seconds at a time. etc.” it’s clcar that you play PVP. This seems incompatible with “No one cares about support or tanking in GW2, it’s all about dps, that’s it.”.

The most popular warrior build before the trait changes in PvE was shoutbow, a healer.
The most popular elementalist build was celestial dagger. A build that required optimally using all your aspects, including healing to support your team.
The second most popular guardian build was a healing bunker.
Spirit rangers were primarily support classes, and while not the most popular, were still up there.

I wont say anything about engineers, as I didn’t play them much, but celestial stats do imply that they were more than just DPS.
Necromancer, I really have no idea what their builds were like.

It’s really only thief and mesmer who were only damage, and mesmer was more burst damage than DPS.

In dungeons, the second placing speed running team in a test used a primarily defensive healing guardian, as it allowed the rest of the group to tank through minor hits instead of dodging (no damage while dodging)

Most ideal groups contained a phalanx strength warrior, or might stacking elementalist in order to provide group support. Doing so actually lowered their personal DPS when compared to builds intended specifically for that purpose.

Mesmers are one of the lower DPS classes, but are still used due to their support via reflects/time warp/portal/invisibility

Before I get the argument that none of that matters because the support is only useful in the context of maximizing DPS, that’s exactly the same as in other MMOs that use the trinity. The only reason tanks and healers exist in those is to maintain DPS, due to dead DPS doing no DPS (Barring rare anomalies like Valythra Dreamwalker in WoW’s Icecrown Citadel

Agree, i have all classes at lv80, my warrior, my guardian, my ranger, my elementalist are more or less running the mentioned build pre patch, hybrid build is what i am always enjoyed.

I don’t understand why people insisted to have trinity type of dedicated support roles, those games existed out there and those games killed all hybrid class fun. GW2 is the only game existed to make hybrid build actually useful and fun. All you support lovers just needed to spec yourself a little bit damage and will be perfectly fine.

There are hundreds of game ouy there that force a team to require tank and healer. This is one game that don’t require those roles and players don’t have a lot of play time can hop in hop out whenever they see fit. Please leave this game as is.

I am fine is combat is a bit fine tuned to require more def stat it is not if tank and healer is required.
