HoT confusing to professional game reviewer?

Lack of release date and detracting events aren’t really confusions on his part.
But yes the mastery system is confusing (some UI tweaking needed). As far as map events are concerned, probably something veterans would have a good grasp on.

break bar and the meta

CureForLiving.5360

How hard is it for zerkers to include cc and conditions in their specs??

Not hard I agree but if the break bar is strong enough. Having a full team of zerks might crumble under enough damage while waiting for the bar to break. This is my hope st least

Well the thing to consider would be how important is it to break the break bar? If players can dodge out of the way, of position themselves correctly to not get hurt CC might become unimportant.

Take the kholer fight in AC for example. If the break bar is strong enough, trying to stack through kholer could turn into a pretty daunting task. Forcing the group to kite, actually dodge his grab, so on so forth. I just see a lot of potential here

But they’d still have to design fight with a distinct anti-zerker mindset. Current content probably won’t be impact a lot though.

Motivation for playing when HoT arrives?

One would hope that being able to experience new content would be motivation enough. But as far as skinner-boxes go: masteries and very very likely a new host of skins. Also I assume you’ll have a daily grind of champions (http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Itzel_Leadership, http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Exalted_Purification) for what I imagine will be skins and items.

1) the races – why are there 5 races? Why, tell me why? It makes to difference which race you play except visual.

I’ll assume you don’t play a lot of video games, particularly not ones with competitive aspects (with the exception being asymmetric multiplayers games which you might want to look into, seems more your thing). The races are designed to be only (or mostly in this case since you do have racial abilities) visually distinct because if they didn’t do so mechanically they’d limit how people play (i.e. is someone wants an Asura Warrior… Oops no Norn are the strongest, got to choose Norn or everyone will shout at you in LFG).

Can anyone explain to me why we were evacuating civilians each time the miasma thined? I mean once it got thick enough we had to run or else we would die.
So how did any civilians survive? They learned not to breathe? LA should have looked like an etermination camp from WW2 – there should be bodies everywhere not survivors.

Ludo-narrative dissonance. It one of those things people do to make the game more fun. Unless you wanted the Escape from LA to be a single non-repeating event?

3) Why do we level up? We get scaled down anywhere we go so it makes no difference if there were 80, 200, 30, or no levels at all.

I assume you haven’t played GW2 too much. There’s a big difference between a level 80 in a level 10 map then a level 10 in a level 10 map. The scaling is also a very good system (although I do think it could scale a bit more…), since it means that you don’t out-level content. This is what happens in games like WoW, you level up and the content becomes dull and boring since you’re one-shot-ing everything. Friends can’t really play together if the one is at max level etc.

1) THERE IS NO SYNERGY!

Yes there is, why do you think people kept complaining that Necros don’t have support skills? Certain group make-up do increase group effectiveness, which I do believe is the meaning of synergy, 1 + 1 = 3. Sometimes a class might sacrifice individual ability to boost group ability but again that is synergy.
And although hardly ever used, there is the combo system.

Don’t even try to tell me that stacking Might is synergy coz it’s not.

But by definition it is. The entire groups effectiveness is raised past the sum of it’s parts.

Many skills in GW had synergy with one another, there was class synergy and multi-class synergy.
[snip]
Now multi-class synergy – what I mean by that is skills from different classes working well together for mutual benefit.
[snip]
Now I could go on and on but you probably get what I mean. We do not have such skill synergy here in GW2.

I think I get what you mean, you want a far more restrictive system in which only specific abilities and specific classes work well together and people who don’t play those classes can… reroll I guess?
Have you ever heard of ‘bring the player not the class’. It’s a thing that came up in WoW. The problem was that they had very strong class synergies, so some classes simply weren’t optimal and were thus kicked to the side. The design idea was to ensure that classes have similar capacities to contribute to the group, so that no one would be discriminated against because of their group. Granted GW2 isn’t exactly there (i.e. Necros and very little support) but I definitely prefer a system by which I’m not kicked out of a group for playing a necro or a ranger.
So to each their own.

2) There is no failure – we cannot fail at all. How do you expect anything to be challanging if we can’t fail no matter what, but simply try and try again untill we get it right.

Your idea of failure is odd. Especially since you used the words ‘simply try and try again’. If we can’t fail then why do we need to try again, doesn’t the very idea inherently imply a failure. Unless you want rogue-like elements such as perma-death so that failure is permanent. I like being able to fail and try again. Judging by the popularity of games such as the souls series other people also like to fail and try again. Mind you I do think GW2 would definitely use a massive difficulty spike in it’s content (again soul-series) but that doesn’t mean you can’t fail.

This game is BLEEDING players and a lack on anything activity wise is why.

Speculation unless you have evidence (and not anecdotal).
But yes without the hyperbole the core problem is: there isn’t a lot to do in the game (assuming you’re a veteran player). And for this, I can’t really see a simple fix (well except waiting for the expansion). I guess ANet could break off some of the people working on the expansion to turn out new content, but that might very likely cause the expansion to take even longer.

And now ask yourself, who is collecting these tokens? A certain officer in LA (http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Officer_Hetja) but what do we know about Hetja? What is she doing with these so called pieces of Zhaitan? Is she trying to cover up what really happened? Is she trying to get rid of the evidence? Or is there something even darker afoot!

Adding end-game content that is race-based will arbitrarily block content from players based on a non-game play and irreversible decision when they created their characters. Personally, I do not think this is a good idea. It pretty much means for ArenaNet that they have to create 5x the content divided for 1/5 of the players.

Well if each race gets missions then it somewhat mitigates the feeling left out bit. If the missions are mostly similar then it’s not that bad.
Personally I like the idea of have racial and order mission, but primarily because it offers a wonderful way to explore the lore and the world of Tyria.

Maybe Anet should make content more logical. Where completing an event is more profitable than failing it.

Well I highly doubt ANet actually designed it to be more profitable to fail. This is simply the product of players testing mechanics and features until they find some bug, exploit or oversight which can be used. Given the complexity of dynamic events and their interactions with other events and mobs and what not so it can be difficult to implement a one size fits all solution.

Like others have said Anet has intended that failing an event should not be something people try for.

Welp some events i can see why you would want to fail, IE…the Risen Wizard..if you do the defense you dont get the trait for it, and you get more loot from killing the Risen Wizard…If i could get the trait from doing the event i wouldnt try to make it fail all the time….

And obviously these are the things ANet should look into.

If he is still alive it explains why Orr isn’t healing and the risen are still there.

How do we know he had ONE tail?

Actually, we know he had at least four. The plot thickens.

Didn’t all of them get ripped off? And yet only one of them is in the museum thing…

Not at all! I have evidence that at least 2 were still attached.

Raids?

CureForLiving.5360

You slipped in the reqiurement for more players again at the end, lol

I’m gonna bet you that far fewer people would object to extremely difficult 5 player instanced content (noting some would of course) than object to multi-group content.

The problem is going from 5 to 10, really? How about 8?

Honestly, I’m fine with 5, but it’d be really nice to get more of my guild in the same instance. More than five isn’t a “requirement lol,” it’s an example.

From what I remember from my WoW days 10 is a decent number of group content. Mind you combat is very different so probably not applicable.

Look, Raids have their place, just not in this game. It will splinter resources ultimately dropping the game quality, and fundamentally change this game into a gear grind.

It might end up splitting resources, but raids do not necessarily have to be gear grind. It could be a skin grind.

simply put, as game quality declines and as player base declines as a result of it, you are left wit ha skeleton staff that would have to take simpler methods of doing things, which boils down to them taking the path of least resistance and going with a gear grind.

So your statement is based on the idea that raids will kill GW2.

People are saying the wyverns are the challenging content or the new AI is the challenging content they were talking about. It’s not.

Read it backward.

“we want our open world content experience to be more challenging” … "Though it isn’t the “challenging content” feature discussed in our announcement"

There’s challenging content coming which is not a part of the open world content experience. That’s my optimistic read of it, anyhow.

Oh ok. It’s the ‘though’ that threw me off. I thought it was acting as a conjunction there.

Simply put: we haven’t announced it yet – when we’re ready to show everything about our plans for challenging content for HoT, we’ll announce it.

Though it isn’t the “challenging content” feature discussed in our announcement – I will add we want our open world content experience to be more challenging as well just in general.

That’s slightly confusing.
So from what I understand: There is challenging content coming. But it’s different challenging content than the challenging content that was announced. So there’s more than one type of challenging content coming? But besides these types of challenging content you’re also looking at harder open world content?
So there’s at least 3 types of challenging content coming, and 1 of them is open world content (possibly)?

An Honest HoT Assessment

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: CureForLiving.5360

CureForLiving.5360

I honestly don’t have an issue as a WVW’er in purchasing an expansion, but I do have issue with having to grind PVE to bring all 9 of my 80’s back to competitive status for doing my WVW with those characters (aka.. the new mastery system/class skills).

My hope is that there will be alternatives to having to learn mushroom jumping and gliding skills to get the mastery’s needed for my competitive wvw play. Mind you I like exploring new maps and doing a little PVE from time to time, I just don’t find having to grind for skill sets to accomplish it fun. And that’s the fear I have of this new mastery system.

masteries wont effect WvW play, you may be thinking of hero points, which will require skill challenges.
masteries as of right now, is PVE progression

So all the WvW would actually get from HoT is the elite specialisations.

You won’t have to grind anything up to “be competitive”. As an 80, you’ll have 400 Hero Points to spend as you see fit among your trait and skill lines. You can absolutely make the build(s) you have right now and have points left over. The only issue (that remains unanswered anyway) is if you wanted to have literally everything unlocked, but even then you don’t actually need 100% of your skills to do WvW. That’s not an excuse, and Anet should address this sooner or later, but it sounds like you think you’re going to lose everything and that’s simply not the case.

That’s not actually masteries though. That’s the new specialisation system.

CureForLiving.5360

Because having 8-10man instances would suddenly turn GW2 into WoW… >_> Many GW2 players actually want raid content, with this game’s combat system it has a lot of potential.

I have no problem with the idea of raids. I am however a bit hesitant that raiding might become the core focus of GW2 (as it did in WoW). But if ANet could balance it I’m all for it.

They literally said in the HoT trailer, as one of the main features of the expansions, that they’re adding “Challenging Group Content.” That’s the source.

You do realize, I hope, that as far as ArenaNet is concerned the wyvern fight we have seen in beta could be what they were talking about when they said “Challenging Group Content”, right?

Wrong.

In the interview with MattVisual, CJ specifically said that the Wyvern wasn’t an example of the challenging content; just how world bosses would be like now:

…the Wyvern is just an example of a tough boss in the open world. It’s not a mega boss, it’s not some example of the challenging content we want you to do. It’s just an example of what world bosses are going to be like in HoT.

Beyond that, WoW’s been talking about the movie for years. I think the project fell through once or twice before it finally took hold. GW2 just hasn’t been around long enough or made enough money on a corporate scale to attract serious movie studios.

But I’d still argue it’s more a matter of brand recognition by the average joe on the street, I’m basing this of course on the number of remakes, sequels and adaptations that Hollywood is turning out. The idea is that the more recognizable brand has the higher chance of being funded and made.

there’s little to do besides grind gold.

I dont know about you, but if you really think that grinding gold is the only thing that you can do in the game then you might not be playing the right game :I

I’m fully willing to accept that someone with 7000+ hours of play might kinda be running out of stuff to do. I just don’t think this relates to a lot of players. Still it is easily conceivable that some players could run out of things to do.

Because they can generate outfits much quicker and cheaper than they can content. They are already developing new content via HoT, however they still need to sustain income while they develop it.

And I will go so far as to argue that in fact they sell well as well
