The Changes WvW Desperately Needs

The WvW Devs should also buy into Camelot Unchained at the cheapest tier ($35), and read their forums. It is very instructive.

The designers of Camelot Unchained are going out of their way to implement community-based competition.

For example, the next stretch goal on their funding is something called “The Bounty”. What this is is an automatically generated quest, by the King of the realm, that puts a bounty on the head of one of the best players on the other team. Then the other realms have to hunt him down and try to kill him.

Can you imagine the amount of excitement that will raise on all sides?

Would something like this ever come to GW2? Doubtful, since the design philosophy does have the tinge of communism (can’t be too much competition, and no one is allowed to stand out). But if they honestly want to reengage their WvW population, that is where they should look.

Already happened in GW2 and it was designed by the community.

Moaing Sacrx, remember? :p

Clones dont do much damage so unless you want to take 10 minutes to kill a single trash mob… You wont let the clones do the job.

GS/sword/whatever and burst/shatter. The primary thing to keep in mind is that the Mesmer is dependant on weapon swapping. You cant just kill something lazily like a Warrior smacking someone in the head with an axe while popping a couple of skills. A Mesmer use 10 skills in the same time.

Minimum lvl requirement for wvw?

Dawdler.8521

Why does it matter? You just ball up in a zerg and run around face rolling anyways. Low level as valuable as anyone else in that setup.

Imagine…. you’ve got a zerg/small group on the go. You come across the enemy zerg with roughly the same numbers. All of the opposing players are lvl 80 whilst your group are a mixture of say; X lvl 80’s, X lvl 10-35’s and X amount of lvl 50’s thrown in. I don’t have to tell you the result of that encounter now do I?

So, if you make the requirement lvl 50 then it evens thing’s out a bit and makes thing’s a bit more interesting does it not?

How would it make things more interesting?

Lets say for arguments sake it was 20 level 80 against 10 level 80, 5 level 50 and 5 level 10-35.

With your level requirement in place it would just plain be 20 vs 15 (of which 5 is still useless).

Was that any more interesting? I dont think I need to tell you the result of that engagement either.

Low level as valuable as anyone else in that setup.

Haha not at all… A level 5 character can do extremely little. A level 80 is about equal to 5 level 5 chars – especially if its a good player.

But anyway, you’re right it doesnt really matter. WvW should definetly not have a level requirement. Many people do WvW only even when leveling. Its worked perfectly fine for the past 2 years and havent hurt WvW at all. Personally I’m a little surprised that many people even stomach playing WvW without a level 80, I cant even tolerate being level 60 because you’re so kitten weak. But hey they do. Kudos to them for running around as cannon fodder.

Can you be nice and link a build of yours ?:) yes you re right with " ppl running from me" i have a big problem any advice ? ty for your time

If you dont want people running away, swap to greatsword. Its really your only hope and even then you might not snag em in time. Scepter is useless, staff is more defensive and iLeap… well that’s just not going to work most of the time.

Or its just to accept it and do something usefull instead of trying to catch them. Hey I count the enemy running away as a victory :p

Whether each player actually -deserves- the reward or not, becomes the responsibility of the Alliance. After the season ends, they can kick out people they don’t like, or train them, or yell at them, whatever. But basically noone can bandwagon for easy rewards, unless their Alliance is happy to let them do it.

Which means that if alliances can kick people out… They will kick people just before the season ends and reap the rewards.

When you start letting players decide who deserve a share of the booty, you’ll open it up for everyone and their grandma to abuse. And abuse it they will. This is a game, not a knightly order that have some sense of moral duty. You cant wish for people to behave. You have to enforce it.

Not to mention, a halberd would serve little purpose for a Norn or Charr, since they have no mount size foes to face requiring a weapon such as the halberd. For an Asura maybe, but come on… A halberd for an Asura is like a bent toothpick for the other races. Its not a very fearsome weapon.

Piken runs mainly as a zerg, as you can see their current rank is 14th, but they are currently on top against the 10th and 11th ranked servers by 20k points!

Lol that’s not because Piken zerg. We hardly have a queue on EB and I havent seen any queue whatsoever on the borders the last week (not even reset night). That Piken got so much points is because the opposing servers have gone down so much in activity. I barely even see any Vizunah and their server has always been gigantic with lots of coverage in comparison. When Piken was fighting in T1 we could win every battle in the field yet always lost the war without any hope of overtaking their points.

There are still lots of small scale on Piken borders with very good players allround. EB is of course a zergfest as usual but what are you going to do. Borders are for roaming and small scale… Its not really a lack of players thats the issue, seems to be more about of lack of commanders to get the ball rolling. The activity on other servers seem to have declined as well so it pretty much evens out.

Megaservers and RP

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Dawdler.8521

Actually, a few of them DO use them. Like ESO, Planetside 1 and 2, etc. But again, there’s usually some sort of system used to move between them. GW2 needs one. It would solve most of the issues people have with them.

ESO doesnt have a way to move between them and the RP there is horrible for another reason – no speech bubbles, making it impossible to have a conversation. Didnt think PS1/2 used a megaserver, you pick a server? The only game I know of that use something similar and where you can jump between instances is STO.

That little idea has been suggested for ages though – even before GW2 megaservers was even planned we wanted to move between different overflows. Anet has done nothing about it.

Tbh, I think much of the issues can be solved by just having some server unique instances, without actually touching the megaserver tech otherwise.

Take Divinitys Reach for example. The city as a whole would be megaserver design, but several of the districts would be per server. It wont stop chumps from interfering your RP (even on PS/TC it never has) but it should considerably reduce the chances and whatever player you see is actually on your server, no other server. Call it a server “sanctuary” in the gigantic megaserver if you will. That pub you want to go to at the end of a long hard day

Open up the map a bit to add a colosseum (just take the model from EB puzzle) and allow people to challenge other players in this zone alone.

All done.

It even solves a balance issue – all players will be PvP scaled in the mists. So it wont disrupt anything PvE at all.

Hidden Cat--Still Viable?

Anything with PU in it offers the survivability Mesmers need in the current meta to work, more or less.

I’m running this in WvW atm
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fhAQRAsd7clknpRtlpxNNcrNSpxY6fy5GSFQpHp8OA-TViFABDq+DAnEAjUOclSQmUidkSCGeCAzs/wZ6fCAcAw37u8uLvbhAWMBA-w

Why would you run with focus when not using reflection and not run with a torch when you use PU?

Personally I run 20/20/30 in WvW most of the time nowadays but choose different skill and weapon set than Hidden Cat (traits for mind wreck dmg, sword and staff). Stats are very similar to Hidden Cat. Its still viable in solo combat and quite fun in raids too. Not as much on the spot dps kittenter which require a good raid to support it but considerably better survivability and a perfect flanking skirmisher. I cant even begin to count how many backliners I have disrupted by suddenly popping up in an explosion of fabulous Mesmer glory. Cant handle single targets as good as my stealthing zerker Thief in the same role, but its superior against small groups and have better tools to combat zergs.

The only flaw my variant of Hidden Cat has is that when using the staff, you’ll have problem hunting down runners. Not much problem against zergs, but solo sort of assume that the enemy actually want to fight or outnumber you. I think Greatsword is a decent weapon, but I cant trait for it (would require dropping either torch trait or 10 points in prec/tough, which loose either clone dodge or PU. None of these options are good). If only going for offense when running in a zerg, its ok… Unfortunetly I find myself outmanned more often than not, lol. The difference in defense is actually quite noticable.

Sidenote: I find it amusing that kitten t er is censored. Shattercat then. That’s allowed :/

Time to remove servers -> REAL "Guild" Wars

You gem-fee cost reasoning of creating alliances is flawed and would ruin this otherwise decent idea.

Imagine if there are only 4 major alliances willing to pay gems to form decent teams. Then what? What’s the 4th going to do, facing no one? It wouldnt work at all.

No, this need to be free and it need to be more managed by Anet. To me, the implementation would be quite simple:

- Instead of choosing server, you now choose a guild alliance upon joining the game, ie you’re in a guild alliance as a “mercenary” before even joining a proper guild. This is a fixed list in order to make the matchups possible, just like servers.

- Guild alliances have visible listings via NPC characters so that you can see how many players and what guilds are there. At those NPCs you can also choose to join another alliances, but it require a guild leader to do so – this will require a new feature with “primary” guild that dominate which alliance you fight for (ie you can be in guilds both in your own and other alliances, but you can only join WvW if the guild you rep is the same alliance as your primary guild).

- The guild alliance matchups handle just like regular WvW, but now Anet got ingame tools to actually balance them. Imagine the following scenario: You enter a city, you go to the guild alliances HQ (ie “neutral” ground). Outside there are a number of NPCs yelling how their alliance need your guild. You go to one of them and listen to him. You are in a T1 alliance and the alliance he represent is T6, so he recognize that and offer everyone in your guild 250 gems to transfer to this T6 alliance, it need some new blood. In other words, Anet can balance WvW by making NPCs pay for guilds to reinforce weak alliances (ie servers), but you still have to pay to freely transfer.

WVW Zerg/Blob Solution?

make maps bigger, remove wp on keeps, prevent open field ac, remove downed state. Limit amount of people inside a building.

So to translate what you say here…

Make the game boring, remove a feature to make the game even more boring, add limitations to make it boring yet again, remove another feature to add some further boring to that because its not boring enough yet. Also, limit the combat to make more boring.

I dont know about you but I enjoy GW2 for what WvW offer – intense, in your face action. I would absolutely hate to loose that.

Yes maps are kind of smallish, that’s what make them playable. They could be detailed with more horizontal depth (like EoTM), but they dont really need to be bigger. I will agree that they could remake them from scratch, but they can do so perfectly fine under current engine limitations.

WPs are there to shorten travel times. And believe me, travel times are boring. Look at ESO AvA. Taking 10 minutes just to get to action, ugh… Its unplayable. Realistic perhaps, but not a fun game.

Open field arrowcarts is not a flaw of them being in the open field. Arrowcarts themselves are flawed and should be fixed – not the possibility to deploy siege anywhere you want.

Removing downed state would just mean less dynamic and unpredictable combat – things that can actually be fun, like seeing that one friendly player coming to help you while you’re down on your kitten . Its not a perfect implemenetation now – its far too easy to res, you do far too much damage (especially when traited) and the scaling when being healed by multiple characters is just plain wrong. But downed state in itself is a great feature in the game that spruce up combat a bit.

Limiting the amount of people that can be inside a build I dont even understand. Why should you limit how many peeps can be in a keep? Sure its silly when the enemy has 60 peeps inside a keep and your raid with 30 peeps still breach the door and completely whoops their kitten because they are too afraid to come out but… uh… that’s just combat. Stopping them from being inside the keep isnt going to make them come out and fight. Its just going to make them run away somewhere else. Limiting the number of people that can be in a keep is about as futile as trying to stop a baby from chewing everything in sight.

Bah! I’m just feeling ranty today.

Sorry.

I’ve never ran out of siege/money/badges so I have no idea how 5 people couldn’t figure out how to get a ram blueprint, and if out of 5 people no one can come up with a ram to break the gate, what are you doing in WvW?

I’m almost always in WvW about 1 to 2 hours a day I don’t PvE much so I’m not sure where the notion of not being able to afford siege is valid.

Except WvW is not about you.

Its all about possibilities. Different options. Completely removing the ability to knock down a door by hand is fine. Its an acceptable solution to a problem that’s existed since release. But offering no viable alternative is not good at all. WvW doesnt need that kind of extra gold sink restriction – WvW just need to be fun to play.

To give you some perspective, just look at ESO AvA. It may be grand, but its not fun. Siege is incredibly restricting. You cant capture a keep without siege. You cant even solo the camps surrounding the keeps, its impossible. Imagine fighting 20 buffed keep lords, that’s a tiny camp in ESO. And you have to capture 3 of them. It literally force you to bring 20+ players and siege to do something, otherwise you might as well go do PvE in a dungeon. Do you really think just slapping restrictions on GW2 would make it more fun? I dont think so.

I can tell from your post that you don’t quite know Gw2 WvW, you wouldn’t want to try and solo a tower or keep the time it would take to kill the guards in between running to a camp then building the siege in between killing the guards again, breaking the gate, killing the lord and his guards, and in that amount of time the odds of no one showing up is very small.

and you can’t compare ESO to GW2 there is no comparison GW2 FTW!

Yes, clearly I dont know anything about GW2 WvW. I mean I’ve barely played anything in the 2500ish hours I got on my account. And the ~600 siege equipments and ~300 superior siege I usually keep in my inventory is at an all time low due to having sold much of it to get my second legendary and granted I usually run solo/small group nowadays instead of raiding with the guild.

But fact remains that the possibility should be there. The actual way this possibility is implemented can be… well, anything. Something as simple as actually being able to order Siegerazer to a specific keep (except maybe garrison), rather than just a breakout event. Maybe not as often as the breakout, but you get the idea.

Its always better to add something to the game, instead of just removing it. Most of us like GW2 for a reason. Changing is fine if you do it for the greater good, just plain removing is not. Otherwise it would be just like the orbs. Its the same reason I will argue against anyone that want the downed state removed.

WVW Zerg/Blob Solution?

in WvW

Posted by: Dawdler.8521

Dawdler.8521

Actually there’s really a fairly simple way to fix it – remove the downed state in WvW.
Think about this for a second (I know this has been discussed before):
Downed state completely removes using the element of surprise as a real advantage for a smaller group to use guerrila tactics on a larger force. If you go into a 1v2 situation with surprise on your side and manage to take down one person before they’re able to respond, their buddy is probably very likely to revive them before you’re able to finish-almost guaranteed to if there are two people nearby to quickly get to reviving.

A stomp takes roughly three seconds to complete, and each class has at least one skill allowing you to interrupt a stomp. If the downed player and/or their friend know what they’re doing they’ll prevent the first stomp from completing, thus allowing an extra three seconds to revive from that downed state. This makes it neigh impossible to actually kill a good, coordinated group unless you have equal numbers.

Now, removing a downed state and sending someone straight into a “hard rez” would completely remove that person from the fight, allowing more involved tactics to have more of a deciding factor in a fight.

There are too many skills and traits involved to remove downed state, it would require redesigning everything. Try to work around it instead. Because Anet is not going to remove a core mechanic, ever. Hopefully they can tweak it, but seriously, we’ve had to live with it for years and a change is extremely unlikely.

For example:
- disallow hard rez while in combat
- lower damage from #1
- only 1 player at once may heal a downed character
- killing a player doesnt rez you from downed, you need to be healed
Etc and so on.

PvD: make doors like walls so megazergs can’t just melt them down

Then you’d have to make siege (at least basic siege) free of charge.

The problem here is that someone that has no money whatsoever still need to be able to get in that keep. They can do so by hacking down the doors. Its all about the possibility to do it, even if its not ideal. If you remove this possibility, then basicly it means pay to win, no other choice. Random siege drops are nowhere near what they’d need to be to justify using looted resources.

If they remove the ability for players to use weapons to get into keeps, I still think they should make a new type of siege which you can order construction at camps. Cost 50 supply to build and is basicly a miniature personal siege golem (no silver, you talk to the camp dude to initiate construction, max 2 per camp, if the camp is lost they will auto-destruct). Fairly slow, low to mediocre damage compared to rams/etc and require the camp it was built at to be held, but can hit both walls and doors. Perfect for lower pop servers (or just off time) that doesnt have the means, manpower or riches to overcome invounerable doors.

WVW Zerg/Blob Solution?

Scaling mobs is neither good nor fun in WvW, unless we’re just talking plain more (ie upgraded keep). Mobs arent supposed to be an obstacle, just something of a filler. When that filler is random… well people dont like rng in PvE, we dont need it in WvW, never knowing how strong a mob is.

But, to drag up an ancient suggestion of mine, I still think there should be local outmanned states that affect mobs as well as players. That gives a fixed strength increase, not random scaling up. If Garrison is under attack by a blob of 50+ then all guards, the keep lord and what few players are there get outmanned – even if all three sides have the exact same number of players on the border and no one else on the border has outmanned. I think a border could be divided into roughly a dozen or so zones.

Quantity > Quality

in WvW

Posted by: Dawdler.8521

Dawdler.8521

If 10 people are to down 40, that pretty much assume at least 20 die within seconds of the first engagement. Very unlikely unless those 40 is a random blob of upscaled players that flee as soon as someone drop and the 10 is an extremely well coordinated guild. Not impossible, but unlikely.

So not really sure why this is a “problem”. Quantity win over quality in warfare, sooner or later. Even in defeat after defeat, quantity often wins in the end. Look at any war. Its just a matter of more.

When we’re talking more reasonable “outmanned” numbers such as 10 vs 15 of two well coordinated guild groups, quality can most definetly start to win over quantity. Just the first few going down will tip the scale of power considerably, especially if they are a core part of the group. I have seen plenty of small guild groups smash into larger blobs and come out victorious, but still… 10 vs 40 is going to be a challenge, especially if we assume similar quality.

Even when broken my Deathadder is better than a Razer Lycosa I had, worst keyboard ever. Keys get stuck, color wear off and its just kitten.

To replace my mouse I had high hopes for a Func MS-3 sequel with optical lens, but nope they went and kittened it up by making it a logitech copycat mouse instead. Never trust “gaming” stuff.

Warrior isn't as enjoyable as I thought

yeah pretty much i have most fun with a warrior if i try out goofy builds that people don’t really expect. even if they don’t really work it’s fun to watch people go “what the hell is this guy doing”

mesmer is the profession i’m most interested in making to 80 next, but they’re extremely painful to level, especially with the new trait system (that somehow seems to hurt them more than other professions during leveling imho) and there’s a ton of stuff to learn while playing them

Oh they’re not so bad to level, just be sure to use a greatsword (all their other weapons will feel weak at low levels, save them for later). Skill cap is very high though, you will dodge and bounce around like crazy to be effective. Especially compared to a Warrior.

My Mesmer met a regen Warrior today in WvW… I mean seriously. It was like trying to tear down a brick wall. With your tongue. While you’re on fire. And have two broken legs. I couldnt even bring him below 90% HP and he did so much damage in turn I never even stood a chance.

That was right after I had survived around a minute of combat against 6 opponents at once from the same guild and brought all of them down to around 50-75% HP before finally going down myself.

Ugh, some Warriors…

I need advice on Legendary and Precursors

A precursor is 500+ gold (some are cheaper) and the materials for building the legendary from that precursor is probably around 1000 gold. As with precursor, some mats are a little cheaper, some are a bit more expensive. All in all, you’re looking at 1500-2000g to splurge on that legendary.

Does that feel achievable? If yes, go nuts and farm for it. If not… Just gather the materials while playing for fun. You’ll get most of it sooner or later. Maybe you even get lucky with a precursor drop… But dont count it in.

In my own experience, I only decided to make Bifrost after first Dawn dropped from the mystic toilet and then a week later Dusk dropped (only 2 precursors I have gotten as MF drops in 2 years time and they where 1 week apart, lol). That was barely even half the funding I needed to make Bifrost :S

No vista is hard to get, really. Dredgehaunt central area is the most annoying I guess, but its not hard.

What’s more work is discovering all the kitten PoI since they can be hidden within instances on a map (such as the Charr Deathstar city sections).

Guild Wars 2 have many fun little details everywhere in the world. Its not as beautifully detailed as other modern games, but the entire package (graphics style, audio, colors, etc) just make incredibly memorable scenery. Divinitys Reach is unmatched for a city feel.

Dont just look at the vistas either, pay particular attention to conversations. They can be great. Still remember the first time I listened to the discussion with the Sylvari thinking the Charr will eat her and her Asuran collegues witty remarks about Charr not eating vegetables.

I jut couldnt stop thinking about how the eles, guardians, and warriors were dishing out 100x the damage you were at a constant rate with their aoe and aa spam.

But none of them are even 1/10th as fabulous as a Mesmer while doing it.

Fix the bugs
Break up the blobs
by introducing diminishing returns for the amount of people in x radius when capturing an objective

Add increasing points to higher tier targets and you got a winner. Of course a blob taking a T1 keep should get considerably less points, but a blob taking a T3 keep should be encouraged to do so and get more points even with diminishing returns in place.

But we’ve been having these discussions for years now. They havent fixed anything. We still dont have the orbs back after they where “temporarily” disabled and we where promised a redesign in the system. They’re probably hoping we’ve all forgotten about that weird northern structure in the borderlands, lol… Oh wait, they even removed it some time ago. Nevermind.

The struggle for Legendaries... or is it?

I’d rather have four “fully loaded” characters than one with Bolt.

Well, unless you really, really like your main.

But tbh, I am inclined to agree. I have Bifrost on my Mesmer and is in the progress of making Rodgort for her as well (I really spoil her, sigh) but it has been an insanely expensive quest. It still is. Hell, it becomes even more expensive with time. When I made Bifrost the basic materials where probably half the cost they are now.

In hindsight… I cannot really recommend a legendary to anyone. Sure the stat swapping is sweet and now they are account bound which is even sweeter, but you might as well buy a bigger bag and have 10 different exotic weapons in inventory for all your characters – it’ll cost far, far less and give you some variety, not to mention you can replace one of them for a pittance. Some of the “basic” skins (ie 100-200g ones) are really neat as well. Screw bolt, dualwielding Firebringer ftw :p

They really are too expensive now. But I guess that’s why they are called legendaries…

What about a turret engineer makes them imvincible?

You should have seen our Piken Engineer raid many months ago… Oh my god we laughed so hard. It was beautiful. Blobs double the size simply dropped dead the moment our commander yelled for dropping supply crates on the same spot. No solo class raid I have seen has even even close (Thief raid was a complete disaster, lol).

But alone, I dont think I’ve ever seen a decent turret engineer, no. Especially not in tPvP :p

Ele above Necro? HA! Strong or weak, skilled or kittened players, it wont change the fact that Eles are in the exact same spot that Mesmers are – you dont want more than a few for specific tasks. Necros on the other hand is the backbone of AoE damage.

The top 3 (in specific order) is:
- Guardian
- Warrior
- Necro

Ele and Mesmer are the classes that the commander will always yell for and blaim when he fail yet still doesnt even care if the group have any.

Engie and Thief, nobody care what they do as long as they arent rallybots.

Rangers are the ones that’s been taken pity over by the local wildlife.

Are you guys serious? “perma stealth” is both stupid to use, and kills all initiative very fast…

No it doesnt. When most people say perma-stealth, they dont mean staying in stealth 100% of the time not doing anything.

They mean having a ~2 second visible window in which you have to bring down the thief from 100% to 0% because after that he will stealth again and when he reappear, you got another ~2 seconds to bring him down from 100% HP again because he’s fully healed no matter what damage you did the first time. Repeat until either the thief or you die. And guess which one die first when said thief can take a 2K toughness target from 25K HP to 10K HP in the 2 seconds he is visible.

It doesnt really matter if certain classes are better equipped to counter it with instant invoulnerability skills (let me guess, you play a warrior or guardian and dont see the issue?), its still cheezy as hell and this design of stealth should never exist in any game, period. Its not a fun PvP mechanic for anyone except for the thief going “lololol he’s so bad player he got owned by my weak thief that cant escape or damage anything”.
