And thats what i dont get. I only really started playing video games 2000 onwards. And i can still appreciate challenge and wanting to improve yourself. I guess i had a pretty good introduction by watching my dad play doom, quake and half life as i was growing up. Why the hell are people so warped and lazy.

It’s less about when gamers started playing but rather when they were born/how they were raised. Typically people born mid-late 90s and up were/are part of the “everyone’s a winner, there are no losers” generation. Nobody was/is allowed to feel bad for not being as good as someone else in anything. They were/are raised to be extra sensitive and that if you hit an obstacle you can’t overcome, it isn’t because of you or your skills because you are perfect just the way you are, rather it’s because that obstacle isn’t accessible enough to everyone’s wide range of skills and thus needs to be changed or able to be bypassed so that no one feels like they are failing.

That’s why with this boss fight, the ones that have failed it don’t think to themselves “hmm, maybe I need to re-think my strategy here”, they think “wow, that boss is waay too hard, they need to fix it!”

Dunno when OP was born, but I would venture to guess mid-90s or later.

This is all hypothetical of course, I’ve done no research.

Guess i just missed out on being raised like that thankfully. Born 91.

Well clearly it isn’t written in stone. Just a theory as to why people would rather “difficult” content be made much easier or bypassed instead of…I dunno, practicing it so you can overcome it.

Like JPs. The people against them sometimes say “I’m not good at them, so I shouldn’t have to do them in the game if I don’t want to.” Which is fine, especially the hard JPs I agree completely, but for simple jumping exercises like what we’ve seen in Dry Top? I mean…why can’t people just learn to be better at them? Barring physical limitations/disabilities that would prevent them from performing key strokes, humans have the amazing ability to learn and adapt. Try something once and fail, OK, try it again and it is slightly easier. Keep trying it and you will get better and better at it. It’s like people don’t even want to try anymore. Failing isn’t fun for anyone, but failure happens in life people, it’s time to stop blaming the content for being too hard, and start accepting that maybe you need to get better.

I won’t stop because I can’t stop.

Join an empty PvP server. It’s free. I duel guildies often in empty servers. Sure people will eventually join, but typically we go off to the side and we get a number of rounds in before it starts to get too populated. Then we move to a different server if we want to continue.

Sure it’s not the most convenient, but it’s not like it is impossible or difficult to do. You can get it done in literally like 5 mouse clicks. Click PvP button, click enter mists, click open game browser, click on server you want, click enter. Done.

People need to stop acting like its impossible to duel your friends if you really wanted to or you can only do it by paying for it.

Well gee, what about people that don’t like WvW, don’t like fractals, and don’t like PvP. What about the people that just like to run around and do events or a dungeon here and there. I don’t think it’s fair they would have to get badges of honor, or fractcal relics, or anything in PvP in order to get items…..

That’s what achievement chests are for. I haven’t done any meaningful WvW in over a year, and even before that I barely dabbled in it, and yet I still have a thousand or so badges after having spent a ton of them on trinkets, a commander tag, and a Gift of Battle.

Do the achievement chests still give out badges? For some reason I thought they did not anymore.

I don’t think developers ever really plan for players to devolve into mindless farmers, but show me an MMO where farming doesn’t exist anywhere and I’ll eat my hat. If I were wearing one. Some people actually enjoy farming. I know I do on occasion. I find it relaxing on some level, but I think that’s because I’m from the UO days.

I always say this on the forum of every MMO I ever play, and I’ve played (or beta’d) in quite a few – but what players want is a GIGANTIC world with MORE content than they can play through BEFORE you develop more content.

The only problem with this is that there are too many different player types. Do you plan your content for the small % of people that play 8-10hrs/day? How could you ever hope to create content fast enough? Some players play more than there are work hours in a day, it would be literally impossible. Do you create content for the people that play 1-2hrs/day? That would be too slow a pace for more regular players.

Using your WoW example, I, too, played it from day 1 through BC, quitting when WoTLK dropped. The day BC came out it took me 8 days to hit the new level cap and by day 60 my guild was already running the highest raid dungeon. Most other regular people were still struggling trying to get Karazhan groups together, while we were clearing SSC or whatever was the highest at the time, I don’t think BT was out yet, it’s all fuzzy these days. My point is, even with an entire giant expansion, there will always be people who play way more than the average and blow through the content faster than anticipated. Long before WotLK came out we were literally just farming raids. It was beyond boring.

There will never be a game that can have content regular enough to satisfy everyone. Ever. Never ever.

Colored commander tag - please don't do it...

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Draknar.5748

Draknar.5748

I realize it would be extra convenient having the different colors. Like OP said, “red tag to bay, yellow tag to hills” etc. But let’s actually look at the kind of time we’re supposedly saving.

You get in your BL. You see a message that says “hey red tag to bay!” You open up your map, search for the red tag, you see it, OK let me head over there.

Now. With the system we have currently. What is stopping us from saying “hey commander JohnSmith’s group to bay!” Then everyone opens their map, just like they would to look for where whatever color tag would be, and then just….mouse over…the tag….to see the name of the person. Oh there’s JohnSmith, I’ll head right there.

Sure it would require 1 or 2 secs extra to mouse-over the tag instead of instantly seeing a color, but come on people…

This whole color tag thing is a non-issue. It is a very mild convenience for a high cost. Why not boycott the new colors and continue to only use blue tags. People will just need to, I dunno, pay attention to what they are doing.

Time is irrelevant. The content isn’t going away so you can work on it at your leisure, even if it takes you a year.

final boss fight too much

Draknar.5748

So I finally got around to doing this boss fight. I had anticipated needing to avoid red/orange circles and such from the posts in this thread, and figured success would come down to proper use of dodging.

Finished it first try, no deaths, no downs. It 100% came down to proper use (or not use) of dodges. The only reason you would run out of dodges in that fight is if you were using dodges for every little circle that appeared and for that big ground AoE.

Dodge only when you absolutely have to. If you are close to the edge of an aoe attack, just walk out of it, if you are moving slow, use a skill that increases your speed so you can clear the aoe without needing to dodge. Dodging should be used when you are in the center of the orange and there’s no way you can run out in time. Also, jumping that big AoE works. It charges up, so you can time your jump to avoid it every time.

All-in-all an easy fight IMO.

It’s like for fractals I normally join with my engineer but if I die too much because of whatever reason I’ll switch to my warrior because i’d lose too much dps on engi if I made him tankier while my warrior doesn’t lose dps. If the whole group dies I’ll switch to my guardian because a warrior just can’t do the job of a guardian.

I’d be pretty upset with someone in my fractals group who kept dying, swapped characters, kept dying, and then was like “ugh, I guess I’ll just play my Guardian.”

I’d be like “then why the ##!#@ didn’t you start with your @#&$*ing Guardian!”

The fact that they can’t speak about the long-term plans for SAB to me means they’ve halted development of it for now. Meaning we should not expect it any time soon.

It’s just so frustrating when they’ve already invested the time for 2 installments of the game (2 worlds with multiple levels), gem store purchase items (coin and boombox), multiple minis, created great music, achievements, etc. And now it has just stopped.

I am deeply disappointed by this. I’m not one to jump to conclusions, but Matt’s response to the question really points to the fact that SAB is something they might work on after they are happy with PvE, PvP, and WvW changes. I mean I’m happy they are addressing those as well, we were just hoping SAB will be done in conjunction with those other update, instead of them working on it after everything else.

And I don’t get the people who hated it being happy it isn’t coming back. I mean, it’s not like you guys were playing it anyway, what affect does it have on you whether or not it is returning. Continue not playing it, we don’t care.

I haven’t even done LS2 yet – I was hoping for more zones to be opened, but when all w got was Dry Top, I was disappointed.

“I wanted more zones to play in, saw they only added one new zone, which isn’t as many as I wanted, so I’m not even going to play it…”

People want expansions. ArenaNet has said that they going to do the Living World instead of an expansion. People still expect expansion-like content. What’s wrong about that?

The Living World focuses around story instead of new maps or new things to do.
Sadly the story is very bad. Many people are not pleased with the outcome and insist that if ANet would’ve done expansions instead, the game would be better.

What’s wrong is that he was saying he wanted new zones, but then went on to say he hasn’t even bothered playing the new zone because Anet didn’t add enough new zones….

If that’s not what he meant, which I sure hope it wasn’t, then I apologize for misunderstanding, but on face value it sounds like a case of “looking a gift horse in the mouth”. If you are familiar with the saying.

“I want cake!”

“No problem, here’s a slice of our finest German Chocolate cake.”

“Noooo I wanted an entire cake!” knocks cake to floor

It’s more like asking for a pizza, and then just getting the crust. “This isn’t a meal!” “But it’s free!” “But it won’t keep me from starving!” “But it’s free!”. I’m not trying to take a side, but I feel like your analogy didn’t quite capture the situation.

Have you actually stopped to explore and look at Dry Top? The zone is beautiful, whether you like the crystals or not, or wanted more zones. It is well designed and unique compared to all of the other zones in the game. I think they did a great job with the zone, the events, the new skins, the story, etc. No, it’s not a whole pizza, but it’s far more than just crust. It’s a slice with a heaping pile of toppings (assuming 8 slices to a pizza—I mean honestly 8 new zones would be a lot for any expansion).

But now we’re just getting into opinions, so I suppose let’s just call it a day.

Picking nits here, but the legendary weapons all require pvp to get them – so they’re not at all pve exclusive. (Yes, WvW is players fighting players, thus is PvP – not PvE though quite often it appears to be Player vs. Door)

Wrong, you get badges from Achievement chests. This hyperbola is out of place.

Just wanted to say: you can’t get WvW maps from achievement chests.

But you can certainly map without engaging in any kind of player vs. player whatsoever.

EoTM —>badges, tons of badges, without really ever needing to fight unless two zergs collide.
WvW —>map completion, only explore what your side controls. This will avoid any possible PvP encounters. Anything left over (POIs/SPs that are in open-ish areas), just grab them on off hours or whenever your side controls the closest tower/keep/supply camp. It may take a while since you need to rotate to all 3 colors, but that’s price you pay for refusing to engage in any kind of PvP: inconvenience.

WvW really is a good balance of PvE and PvP whereas you can do one, the other, or both if you want to.

I could never claim with 100% certainty you won’t encounter another human in combat, but with the above method you will avoid 99% of encounters. (Some thieves are extremely persistent)

Nice of you WvW guys to forget about the rest of the game’s population. Commander tags are often used in PvE too. Should we have to WvW to get those?

why should wvw players have to farm gold in pve to get those?

Pretty sure you make money in WvW as well… I know I do.

Sure it’s faster to do it in PvE, but getting it as fast as humanly possible isn’t something you “have to” do. That’s a choice you make.

are u commanding in wvw? commanding is expensive. people donate a lot, and withou it it would be actually loosing money.

in any case, i hope we can agree that 300g in wvw is not the same as 300g in pve.

Yes, commanding is expensive, but it is a cost they can afford (be it earned on their own or through donations). 300g would be a one-time cost, which could very well be earned through donations just like siege equipment.

But ultimately, and what I think is most important, you don’t have to get a different color. Everything can stay exactly the same. Can’t afford 300g as a commander? No problem! You already have a commander tag so who cares!
Your lives will not be harder because your tag is still blue instead of whatever other color. Nobody will think you are lame.

I can honestly say the only time anyone has ever asked for Ascended gear has been in high level fractals. I’ve run hundreds of dungeons since release and not once has anyone had a gear requirement (I’m not including FoTM as a dungeon). Maybe if you were seeking out speedruns of dungeons I could see them wanting you to only be in zerk gear, but far more players prefer to play casually than speedrun.

I highly recommend creating your own LFG in the future. List it as a casual run and you will see your group will fill up within 30-60secs. The zerk only speedrun groups take far longer to fill and thus are usually what you see when you look at the LFG menu. Start your own, trust me.

I’m with the OP here. I came out naked from the place twice.
Apparently, I’m just a bad player according the the elitists here. Dodging isn’t hard, having enough endurance to dodge every time it is needed is.

It’s really about saving your dodges until you absolutely need to use them. That in itself is part of the dodging skill. If you dodge every single time you see a red circle, you will run out of dodges. Sometimes you can actually just run/step out of the circles and save that dodge. Use a skill with a speed boost so you can run out of some of them, use a skill with a block or an invuln if you have them. Take a look at your other possibly less used utility skills, perhaps there are some that would aid you.

Also remember food. There are foods that boost your endurance regen by large amounts. It was almost a requirement for the Liadri fight.

It’s more of a problem-solving exercise than a dodging exercise quite honestly.

For the OP who died 25 times, I have a feeling he/she didn’t change anything about their build, their skills, potions/food, etc. They went in with their normal every day build and kept dying, then re-trying, then dying again. After the 2nd or 3rd death I personally would have stopped and thought about how else I could approach the fight. If there are foods that would help, potions that might help, maybe some traits/utility skills that would be better in that fight.

I won’t stop because I can’t stop.

Search for the fractal skins.

Why?

Because you can’t buy them on TP. Your search would yield nothing.

Additionally, you cannot buy Green or Yellow SAB skins. You can buy blue ones all day long, but very few people do I see running around with the yellow ones (which is why I love my yellow SAB staff).

problem is more like people wait for CONTENT since livingstory 1 ends for 8 months and now we had only stupid cutscenese and textlines for another 2 months and they make a break …..

Are we playing the same game? Your take-away from the LS2 thus far is that it is only “stupid cutscenes and textlines”? Did you even complete it? Actually don’t answer that, I wouldn’t believe you anyway.

I completed it and I felt like I spent half of the time clicking through dialog.

Well at the very least your description gives it a 50/50 ratio action/dialog, which is quite different from the person I quoted who was saying it was only cut-scenes and text-lines.

Living Story is not what you guys wanted for content, we get it, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t content. Ok so you wanted SAB, or guild halls, or capes, or mounts, or multiple new zones, or dueling, or new dungeons, or instanced raids, we get it, we all get it, the LS isn’t your guys’ cup of tea. But some of us actually do like it and you have to realize that people have worked hard to create this content and to dismiss it as not content because it isn’t what you wanted is insulting to the writers and development team.

And people always want the fastest things

I am the exception to your rule. I’d rather do a dungeon slower with casual players than as fast as possible with speedrunners. It’s far too stressful doing speedruns constantly. And IMO far less fun.

I don’t think you’re as much an exception as you think you are. Many people don’t farm dungeons, they just do them for fun. That’s how some of us want to play.

Should have said I am an exception to his rule.

Clearly others think like I do otherwise I wouldn’t be doing dungeons as frequently as I do them lol.

Not like you learn your class lvling 1-80 anyways, upgrade armor every 10 lvls and spam 1. Wow I just learned my class!!! You actually don’t need to learn anything until 80 really. Chances of you getting an actual dungeon group are nil and dungeons are pointless anyways.

Good example of the wrong way to approach this game. For someone with the name Sunshine, I’m very disappointed.

Some people actually try to learn their class leveling up. Just because you can spam #1 skill to level doesn’t mean that’s what everyone is doing. 1-80 at the very least you can test weapon combinations and become proficient in them.

No joke I played with a Guardian the other day that didn’t know that the number 5 skill for GS pulls the mobs after you hit it again. He was 80. How did he level up you ask? EoTM exclusively with staff spamming #1 skill. He also had never equipped a shield, torch, or scepter. Ever. Not like you can’t quickly unlock those skills in a dungeon, but the point is he had no idea how to use them effectively. Sure, we can carry him through for the most part, but why?

Have you ever asked a player in a dungeon to equip a skill for a particular encounter and they just kinda freeze. Maybe give you the “uhm, hold on, that’s a utility skill right, I don’t think I have that unlocked.” Like ask an ele to drop FGS/IceBow or Wall of Reflection from a Guardian and they say they don’t have those skills. I mean….wut?

Multiple characters useless

I also have 8 level 80s. I find I play pretty much 2. My PvE/PvP character, and my WvW character.

Now, having said that, I’m thinking back to every MMO I’ve ever played, and honestly, I played 1 main character and 1 alt. Any other characters I had were strictly for leveling up so I could have that class maxed, and then I would go back to my main.

In fact, I would claim that practically every MMO player does this. I’ve never met anyone who consistently played 8 characters regularly (after all are at level cap). You level all classes to max, then you pick your main and secondary and focus on those. You’d go crazy otherwise.

I find GW2 is in line with every other MMO out there in terms of alts. If anything one notch higher because of all of the account-bound features.

So you can’t farm the same dungeon 8 times. Whatever…

I would be OK with this system, except I don’t want to be in the group running dungeons with a bunch of 80s that have less than 1hr in-game time. That would be brutal lol.

Don’t join 5kAP+ warguardele zerker only groups. Instead, open your own and specify. It takes at most 5 minutes to find four alike-thinkers.

Did a FoTM18 last night, me and a guildie, PUG’d the last 3 spots, advertised something like “FoTM18, all builds/experience levels welcome, 10AR please, NOT a speedrun”. Filled those 3 spots literally within 30secs. Everyone was very friendly and experienced, run went extremely smooth, no wipes.

It’s really about finding the right people to play with and avoiding the speedrunners if that’s not your cup of tea.

Some days I really just want to knock out a couple CoF as quickly as possible. That’s when I join the speedrun groups. Most days I’m all about things being casual.

Trouble Leveling Up

in Players Helping Players

New players: easiest way to level up is to focus on map completion for whatever zone you are in. Hit every event as it comes up, even if you’ve done it before, do every heart, get every point of interest, skill point, etc.

You will level up quickly. And remember, there is more than one 1-15 zone. If you complete your race’s starter zone and are only 13-14, then go to your main city, then go to Lion’s Arch, then the gate hub to travel to a different race’s capitol and then go to their 1-15 zone.

The absolute fastest way to level would be EoTM train, but that’s something I would recommend for your 2nd character or later, not your first.

When the game originally came out I thought Twilight was the greatest thing I’d ever seen and promptly started working towards it. Almost 2 years and no precursor later, I’ve essentially stopped caring. Problem is: I have all materials except for the precursor, which I am saving up for. Second problem is: I see so many people with Twilight/Sunrise/Eternity that I no longer care enough to actually save my money. I keep spending it on other skins I want, or crafting Ascended.

Pretty sure getting Dusk to drop magically from a mob is the only way I’ll get Twilight finished. I’m sure as heck not saving up 1000g+ for a skin I only kinda sorta want at this point when I can spend that money elsewhere.

Guild Wars 2 play hours steady on Raptr

The thing is I’ve been tracking Guild Wars 2 on Raptr for a long time and it seems relatively stable. Which is a good thing.

This game has found it’s core playerbase and I don’t think most of us are leaving anytime soon. And I do think that it’s enough people to sustain the game indefinitely.

I would agree with this, simply based on my experiences. All of my same friends/guild members still play. Our guild has grown rather than shrink. The people I play GW2 with are here to stay, just like I am. I may enjoy a distraction here and there (like Destiny, oh man did I enjoy the beta), but GW2 is my home for the foreseeable future as it is for many, many others.

I think post-WoW MMO players need to accept the fact that whatever new game they choose to play won’t have a cult following of millions of players like WoW did. If your game is stable and maintains a healthy number of players, then just ride it out. Especially if you enjoy the game.
