Going for 4 stats on a Ranger isn’t really that optimal. I can see where you’re heading with the build, but it’s harder to optimize stats when hopping between 4.

This is all Theorycrafting:

Without going into traits or food, I was able to whip up a few gearsets on a Ranger. For Trinkets, I have an Ascended Knight (Toughness, Power, Precision) Amulet. Everything else (trinket-wise) is Cavalier (Toughness, Power, Critical Damage).

Armor, I have Knight (Toughness, Power, Precision) Helm, Chest, and Legs. Shoulders/Gloves/Boots I started with Rampagers (Precision, Power, Condition Damage), but it didn’t offer enough Condition Damage to be useful, so I swapped it to Berserker (Power, Precision, Critical Damage).

For Weapons, I have Berserker (Power, Precision, Critical Damage).

Your main stats are… 1845 Power, 1437 Precision, 1699 Toughness, 62% Critical Damage, 28.81% Critical Chance, 2763 Armor, 15082 Health. (Yes, this is base health).

The reason why I didn’t invest into Vitality is because you said you would be running condition removal and you sound like you’re going to be range. Running Toughness instead is an optimal choice since it reduces damage you take, but keeps your heals strong (since having a higher health pool means you have to heal more for the same % health).

Your damage reduction is at 33.35% but your critical chance isn’t. However, with a Sigil of Accuracy (+5% Critical Chance), your Critical Chance will become 33.81% before Traits. That will give you your intended 1/3 crit rate. You also have a decent amount of Power to back it up and a sizable amount of Toughness.

A link to the referenced armor set is found here

I used Ruby Orbs because they are cheap alternatives and offer the most critical damage. If you wish to have more pure stats, run 5x Runes of the Mesmer and 1x any Rune. If you wish to have -inserteffecthere- use -insertrunehere-.

The reason I did not choose to include your condition damage is that, from an entirely gear standpoint, it’s hard to put in enough condition damage to make an impact such that it’s worth it to override bleeds given by someone who’s actually a Condition Damage dealer. Now, you might use your Shortbow/Dagger and end up bleeding/poisoning, anyways, but keep in mind that Hybrid is [almost] always subpar.

CoF path 1 question

A better scenario is for someone to hold the cutscene all the way while they swap. (They can leave as the boss dies/after/or when the boss is at 2% health.)

If they, however, insist on switching at 25%, the best strategy is to keep dpsing with all your members. If his health isn’t going down, THEN take out crystals. (If nobody is taking out crystals, you can have the Mesmer, if he’s still there, swap to Crystals while the boss has >5 crystal buffs on him, to maintain him at 5, but have him swap back to DPS when it gets to 5ish). Why 5? It’s easy to outdps and killing all of them takes too long. The reason why you want the mes to take them out is, theoretically, he can use iZerker + Spatial Surge to take out 2 crystals in a short period of time. As a Warrior, you’d have to either go melee on them or use a rifle.

Why do mobs hate this character?

Esplen.3940

The main mobs that attack based on stats are bosses (most notably Giganticus Lupicus, who incorporates your stats into the aggro tables).

However, the best I can say is to press V. I remember when I was playing a dungeon with my friend the first time, he kept complaining that mobs loved him and that he couldn’t survive and he started to whine (to the point of almost crying) because he kept getting focused. The truth is, he wasn’t getting focused. In fact, I was holding aggro more than him, he just wasn’t avoiding the damage properly. Running into red circles and not paying attention to his positioning.

There are a myriad of reasons as to why you are or are not getting aggro. The first step is to take a step back and look at your approach to scenario’s. If you’re panicking and running away, you’re most likely not tackling the situation properly (in the first place).

So from an epic dragon-slaying adventure we’ve reached grinding achievements to play dress-up dolls. You know, this game would make a killer Facebook app.

Because 6 pieces of gear (between 3 slots) is what constitutes dress-up.

If that’s the case, then DANG, PvE and PvP (along with WvW) offer a whole realm of outfits for your dolls. Because, you know, there are over 200 different items for each armor type (not including Radiant/Hellfire/Gem Store).

The actual number is around 253 without counting Aquabreathers.

Game ended up being more grindy...

There’s zero in that paragraph that takes about gear. You’ve simply read into it what you want.

And more and more people are seeing what Anet actually means there, which is what they said they’ve meant several times since. Why argue against something Anet has already clarified?

Really?

Ok, let’s read the clarification:

ArenaNet

Our games aren’t about preparing to have fun, or about grinding for a future fun reward.

“Fun reward” = gear, for example.

Ergo, guess what Vayne? And, for the records, this has been mentioned in this topic already.

A good editor would have noticed it.

The quotes are…

It doesn’t suck your life away and force you onto a grinding treadmill; it doesn’t make you spend hours preparing to have fun rather than just having fun

and

It all gets back to our basic design philosophy. Our games aren’t about preparing to have fun, or about grinding for a future fun reward. Our games are designed to be fun from moment to moment

Which are both true.

If you have fun by getting pretty gear, note that you’re having fun by getting pretty gear. If you enjoy having pretty gear, then you should work for that pretty gear. This isn’t World of Spoonfeed where if you think leveling is too slow, you can call up Support and get to max level with decent gear. This is Guild Wars 2, where aesthetics are the horizontal grind. Meaning if you want to have that look, you gotta work for that look. But it doesn’t give you an advantage over other players, so you can still play the game without that look.

tl;dr: Just because you don’t look pretty ingame doesn’t mean you can’t play the game.

I feel like the main reason for wanting a Guardian is not just that they are capable of Support, but also that the Support they give is very well-defined.

They have easy access to boons, reflects, and party heals (even a full-heal for your group).

However, since my main is a Mesmer, I need to have a shameless plug, which is to say that Mesmer is actually more of a Control > Damage = Support.

Control is slightly ahead of Damage and Support not in regards to direct Control (or even Crowd Control), but simply Misdirection. If you are talking straight Control as in Crowd Control effects, it’s actually equal, if not less than Damage and Support.

The Support is, at it’s base, a mix of Control. Having Condition Removal (Control + Support) and enemy Boon Removal (Control) in the same skill, as well as having Party-wide Mobility, Party-wide Stealth, Party-wide Quickness, Reflects… the list goes on.

The Damage, raw, is actually really pitiful. Most of a Mesmer’s damage does not come directly from the Mesmer themselves (unless you’re shatter). With that in mind, non-Shatter Mesmer’s do not benefit (as much) from things such as +% Damage, like Sigil of Force, Sigil of Night, Sigil of X Slaying, Runes of the Ogre, Runes of the Scholar, Runes of the Ranger, etc. A Phantasm’s Damage does not get boosted by those. Neither do Conditions, for that matter.

However, with the fact that a Mesmer does pitiful damage in mind, players should realize that Mesmers have access to a ridiculous amount of damage once traited.

That actually extends to the entire profession of the Mesmer. They can do pretty much anything any other profession can do, just pretty horribly… until traited. Then they can become magnificent beasts, ready to do explode at your fingertips.

An example is party-healing. Mesmers do not have any base access to party-heals, something that Guardians, Engineers, Thieves, Rangers, Elementalist, Necromancers and even Warriors have. However, with just ONE TRAIT, they can get a 3000 AoE heal (before Healing Power) every 3 seconds.

And yes, every profession but Mesmer has access to some form of party healing, be it through a banner or regeneration.

Losing my train of thought, so I’ll stop here.

If you are going to get Magic Find, Boon Duration, or Critical Damage in your gear, remember that (unless you’re going for a Speedrun build), your Chest/Helmet/Pants should NOT maintain those stats. They offer the least stat points per Critical Damage (unless you’re getting Celestial).

Since you’re most likely new to the game (at least, in terms of the endgame finesse of skill/knowledge, you may have near a hundred hours played), it’s probably best to stick with tankier stats at first.

Two good sets are Knight and Soldier stats. Between these two, you can actually mix and match instead of just going full on one. The main reason why you should start with a Knight/Soldier set as your first is that when you start gearing up your other sets, if you end up being too squishy, you can always trade one or two pieces to make yourself a little tankier if you’re too weak (or if you’re dying too much in a dungeon, just swap armors)!

Accessories (at this point) should just be green as they’re cheap and replaceable (yes, they give the most stats, but unless you have spare money, they’re hard to get exotic versions of. That, and you don’t really want to get in the habit of replacing them too often, because the Ascended are a pain.)

Losing my train of thought here, but my final point is:

IGNORE LEGENDARIES AT ALL COST UNTIL YOU THINK YOU KNOW YOUR PROFESSION WELL.

Please don't get rid of magic find stats!

Wraith, I have yet to see non speed run dungeon groups with pugs that request players to ping gear and I have been PUGing for the past 7 months.

While it can be a reason to request a ping (and it was an issue at one point, notably when Dev’s were trying to inform players that MF did not affect chests, but groups that I joined/saw did not require you to ping on entry) your context of MF gear and getting pinged is way off.

In regards to gold/hour, there are typically only 2 dungeons for that. CoF P1 and CoE (daily all paths for quick coin + charged core/lodestone + tokens). You can also add in a few AC paths, HotW, CoF P2 and Arah P3, but CoF P1 is still faster, for the most part.

tl;dr: Magic Find does not increase your earnings in dungeons.

Now, I know that that sentence is wrong, but for the most part it applies to the game. Magic Find only increases your gains off of looting a mob, not chests or bags. Dungeons do not give you a higher chance of getting rares/exotics, so having Magic Find will only slightly increase your chances, but it’s at a rate that’s laughable.

Why is it laughable? Because you’re pitting yourself against mobs that are meant to be tackled with 5 players only to get drops equivalent to what you’d find out in the open-world.

Back to Wraith’s post, wearing Magic Find does slow down a group, but anything that is not meant for a super-speed run will also slow down a group. Even Divinity Runes will slow the group down (Ruby Orbs are better specifically for higher damage).

The context of your post is wrong because gold/hour is based off, in dungeons, speed, not loot (unless you’re doing CoE, but that’s speed AND loot). Wearing Magic Find gear will not improve your gold/hour (it will actually hinder it), unless you find a balance. Of course, that would require a lot of theorycrafting to balance. For a simple explanation, you’re making the group go slower for a chance at getting more gold than you would normally.

Specifically for CoF, in a run, I’ll kill 4 mobs that drop loot (2 mobs at start, 2 bosses).
Now let’s say you’re running Magic Find Gear and Food (no banners, or other boosts/sigils/etc).

You’re going to have 197% Magic Find (+ Achievement Point Magic Find). Let’s just round that for simplicity. You now have 200% Magic Find.

Say an Exotic has a 1/1000 chance of being looted. You now have a 3/1000 chance of getting an Exotic item. The probability of you looting an Exotic with a 1/1000 chance while looting off 4 mobs is 0.4% (assuming they all have the same rate of dropping an Exotic). With a 3/1000 chance it’s 1.2% (yeah, no duh it’s 3x).

If slowing a group down for an additional 0.8% chance at getting an item is worth it, then Magic Find gear in CoF P1 is worth it. Keep in mind that I do not have actual Exotic drop rates and they are most likely lower than that for the actual dungeon run considering the first 2 mobs are not Champions.

Lastly, you have to keep in mind that not all Exotics are equal, and so you have a chance at getting a worthless Exotic (especially since the mobs are level 75, not 80-83).

There would be no speed-buffs, and like I said, merely just for show.

I think they had a ride-able witches broom that acted like a mount without a speed increase, though I can’t be sure.

Yea i didnt mean for the to have speed increases, just for something cool to have and ride on if youre bored of traveling on foot. It also makes it more fun for those people who like to role play.

It shows as a Wooden Chest BECAUSE you got an item that is Yellow. You didn’t get an item that is Yellow because you got a Wooden Chest.

Even though Kite Fortunes and Support Tokens are Yellow (Rare), their droprates are hardly rare, in fact they have a chance of dropping nearly equivalent to that of Fine (Blue) items. The only reason you are getting Wooden Chests are BECAUSE THEY ARE YELLOW.

If there are no event items in the drops, you wouldn’t see that many chests, period.

I hope you realize that getting a kite fortune or support token isn’t quite the same as getting a rare item.

When this event is over, you’re not going to be seeing rares in place of all the kite fortunes/support tokens you’ve been seeing.

They will likely be orbs and crests, that is okay. I don’t think I have ever pulled a bonus chest that didn’t have a yellow something in it.

No, all those chests wouldn’t contain orbs and crests. You wouldn’t get all those crests.

Let me put it to you plainly, event items are added to global drop rates. This means that when you kill a mob and it rolls for loot, you’re getting event items at a rate very similar to common items, like Needles and Broken Lockpicks and Glob of Globby Goo. It’s not quite as high a drop rate as those items, but it’s a very noticeable drop rate.

The only reason why they appear in chests is because the color of the item themselves is rare, not because the items are rare during the looting process.

Let me tell this to you one more time, because I don’t think you’re going to get it…
KITE FORTUNES AND SUPPORT TOKENS ARE NOT RARE DROPS, THEY ARE SIMPLY YELLOW ITEMS.

If you want me to continue, I’ll start explaining how Precursors aren’t dropped at the same droprate as other Exotic items, even when using 4 Exotics (of the same type) in the Mystic Forge.

I do my dailies everyday which gives some points but that’s like bringing sand to the desert. ;-)

I have some parts of the game nearly untouched: WvW, PVP and Fractals.
This should give me another 1.000-1.500 points which is still miles away from top.

I think it 12.000 still impossible nowadays!?

Doing every daily for a month (30 days) will give you (in the current system), 330 points.
Doing every pvp daily for a month (30 days) will give you (in the current system), 120 points.

Together, that’s 450 points.

Doing every monthly in one month (30 days) will give you (in the current system), 70 points.
Doing every pvp monthly in one month (30 days) will give you (in the current system), 40 points.

Together, that’s 110 points.

If you do all the dailies and monthlies in one month (30 days) you will get (in the current system) 560 points. Add in Living Story (this month specifically has kitten points) and you end up with 1015 points. The game has been out for 11 months (we’re about to hit month 12) and so, for all the early months where Living Story didn’t appear to give us a huge amount of achievement points, we add in things like Jumping Puzzles, Slayer, Weapon Slayer, Hero, Tradesman, Explorer, Fashion, Community, Hall of Monuments, Bosses, Dungeons, Fractals, and PvP (not including WvW since those achievements don’t give much points for the effort, PvP gives more) then 12000 is actually behind schedule. I think the highest attainable (which nobody can attain since most people missed monthlies/dailies near the beginning) is somewhere a little greater than 13000.

Weapons of the Mist might be better for your ideal. Also, try running with mainly blue hues for your armor. I can’t really tell you what dyes to use, but if you’re going for any white/metallic color, use Cobalt instead of something like Mithril (or White/Celestial). Adding in a little bit of Sapphire definitely couldn’t hurt, but don’t overdo it.

A good method is to set your dyes by Hue and then stick with one color palette and try to get it to give you the desired effect. Keep in mind lighting conditions, if you aren’t getting what you want, try looking at your character from a different location (not angle, but quite literally, a different zone/area/spot).

i would argue take 20% maybe more off the damage in stealth
make the reveald last 6 or 9 seconeds( when reveald where 4 sec people complained that the rotation where wrong and 3 fit very well but if 3 fits then 6 fits to just takes dubble the amount of time to get acces to stealth agien)
buff there damage outside stealth with 10-15%(with a nerf to heartseeker tho but not damage wise)

reworke the smoke + leap combo to grant blind when hitting a target instead of stealth

Are you a game balance coordinator? I don’t think you should be throwing random numbers out there if you aren’t.

im not a balance coordinator for anet that is true but that still does not take away my right to have and air my own oppinion in any way and if i think that would help balance the thief more then i have my right to state that, just as you have the right to say im wrong and dont have the right to say i should not say anything;)

You don’t have the right to say he doesn’t have the right to say that you should not say anything.

Also, your “balancing” effort hurt to read.

If 4 secs is too long because it screws up a combo, why would you make it 6 seconds? Additionally, taking 20%+ damage off of a profession specific damage bonus is ridiculous. Sure, Stealth isn’t just for thieves, but they are the only profession to get stealth attacks (attacks specifically gained during stealth). It basically makes Backstab worse than Heartseeker, thus rendering D/P (and a lot of other backstab/stealth builds) worthless.

I posted 500 -InsertRedactedFoodNameHere-. Within 2 days, 250 had sold. The next month had none of them sell. The past 4 days had the rest of them sell.

If you add a removal like what you’re saying, it will only hinder players with foresight.

Sorry but you had no foresight. You were playing the fluctuation which you had only a small clue on how it would behave. Otherwise you would have turned your profits a lot faster than in one month. Arguably you could have made more money if you reposted your goods for a quicker sell, allowing you to then go and buy/sell another round within that same one month time.

This is an important point. You lose money as a flipper the longer your goods sit around. The loss is in “lost profits” that you could have made if you were better about your pricing. A time limit forces player to be a bit better if they really want to sell their goods.

I wasn’t flipping. I cooked the goods at a rate which would give me 10% profit. If I crafted it now and sold it at the price I listed it for, I would have made 1/2 the profit. Additionally, I made my money off of the original 250 sold (as the other 250 were used with goods I already had, although if you want to consider their price, so be it) and then used that money on other investments. Just because you would have pulled out doesn’t mean that I made the wrong choice for profit. I don’t care about how fast I can get my profit.

I think it’s time all you complainers make a thief, play them to 80, gear up and head into WvW.

Seriously, that’s what I did after having trouble against stealth. Now, glassy, over-confident thieves are my favorite target. And after playing pretty much every decent thief build, I definitely do NOT think stealth needs a nerf.

Remember back at launch when everyone was complaining about Mesmers? No one knew how to fight them, and they wrecked in WvW. But now that’s not really an issue. Even if you’ve never played as one, you learn their patterns. You learn how to spot the real one. The difference is, you can’t see what a thief does in stealth when you’re fighting them. It’s harder to learn how their mechanic works when you’ve never extensively played as a thief in PvP.

So quit complaining and roll a thief. If you don’t feel like leveling, try them in sPvP. The experience is different than WvW, but you’ll start to understand why stealth doesn’t need a nerf.

(No, I do not main a thief. I have 5 different 80s I cycle between. Fighting thieves is not a problem with any of my characters, including my Ranger or Elementalist.)

Except Mesmers get nerfed every patch. I can count the number of patches where we didn’t get nerfed on one hand.

Anet seriously needs to learn how to balance classes though. Rangers/Engineers are in the trashcan at the moment because their damage is so terrible. I kind of gave up on Rangers since Guild Wars 1. I played a Ranger, complained multiple times that it needed a damage boost, and never received a single response back. Turns out that I shouldn’t have just left my Ranger. I should’ve just left the game.

You are so kittening wrong that it’s making my eyes bleed.

Engineer is actually has the HIGHEST solo DPS. Rangers are also very strong.

You need to stop making wrong assumptions and start doing the actual math.

Jesus.

I do agree, but with the 4war1mes combo, you only need 2 competent players— the gate warrior and the mesmer. Everyone else can be asleep as long as they press 2.

I posted 500 -InsertRedactedFoodNameHere-. Within 2 days, 250 had sold. The next month had none of them sell. The past 4 days had the rest of them sell.

If you add a removal like what you’re saying, it will only hinder players with foresight.

I dunno, I just run a full zerk phant or shatter build. If I go shatter, I pull as much as I can so if I go down I can rally. If I go phant, I sit back and let my phants kill while I eat dinner.

Did people actually buy the DD just for the extra in-game goodies…?

I am the only one that bought it in order to support ArenaNet a bit more than the standard version?

I did it for both, as I had pre-ordered. I didn’t care if they were bad goods, I loved Arenanet back then (super fan~!). I still love Arenanet, but I wouldn’t go as far to say that I’m a super fan, still. Definitely a fan of them, though.

EDIT: I think the best way to put it is to say that I would do it again, if I had the choice, even if I knew the rewards. Heck, I could have bought the DD with Gold, but I’d still, in my current and past mind, have bought it with real money. The only time I would have possibly bought it with gold would be around Christmas time, when my ideals were shoddy.

In GW2 you are a nobody. You DO NOT matter!

I agree. I think Colin said “The monsters don’t care if you’re standing there. I fight a monster, it spawns back 10 minutes later. We kill it, and it respawns again. This isn’t the direction we want to take.” Yet, that’s exactly what they did here.

All major dragons spawn, are killed, and respawn later. They really don’t give a single flying crap that I’m there. As far as I can tell, the world hasn’t changed at all because of my actions. The personality types (dignity, charm, ferocity) don’t matter at all when I talk to people, so it doesn’t change anything.

Yes, let’s have Dragon Champions (Lieutenants, to be more precise) that only spawn once… ever. Reminds me of a fight… oh, what was that name… I can’t remember it… OH THAT’S RIGHT, THE Ancient Karka battle. I wonder how well that went.

So Mr smartiepants…in your infinite wisdom, could you please explain why Anet said they didn’t want to go this way if in fact, as you say, it is unavoidable?

Because no matter how you find the extreme opposite ridiculous, you have said nothing about the point that Anet said something and surprise surprise, they didn’t stick to it. Do you call that lying or something else?

The manifesto was their ideals before the release of the game. Things change (who woulda thought Ascended items would come out? Fractals? I’m quite sure the devs at Arenanet didn’t, but they made it because a lot of the Vertical Gear Grinders wanted some Vertical Gear to Grind.

Take a step back and think about what Arenanet has done/is doing because of the masses. Sure, you might not be part of the masses, but when you think of a PUG, what do you think of? Now multiply that by millions and that’s what drives a company to make the bad choices they do (either that or just pure greed).

Inversely, what do you suggest they do? You can complain all you want about what someone didn’t do [right], but if you don’t say what they can do better, you’re not contributing to anything.

Why not just have it so that if it’s in your inventory the game pretends there’s a Black Lion Trader next to you at all times. Then, you can just press O and retrieve, etc. Double Clicking it would just be the same as pressing O.

Don’t you dare talk kitten about the Mistfire wolf.

Now that it’s on a decent recharge, it’s better than every Norn cultural Skill there is and also ironically better in PvE than 2 out of 3 Ranger Elites.

.

But I agree with the rest… in a show of good faith, they should auto-mail one of these “new improved” banker golems to all of us who bought DD….

Mistfire is good, everything else is pretty bad (although the ring is actually really good, because it gives 1% crit damage for every 1 stat it gives (technically for every 3 stats it gives, but that’s still a better ratio than any other item)… too bad you can’t really put upgrades onto it.
