What happened to the manifesto?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Healix.5819

Healix.5819

The manifesto is not only valid, it’s entirely true.

Unlike traditional MMOs, in GW2 you are not forced to grind to experience the content, where grinding is being forced to repeat something multiple times that you don’t find fun. In traditional MMOs you are forced to grind at some point, whether it be to grind out gear to experience the next tier of content or to level, including grind quests (kill 10 rats).

They have never said that there will be no grinding nor vertical progression. Even when tunnel visioning “We don’t want you to grind” that doesn’t mean there will be none at all, just that they don’t want to force it. Vertical progression was hinted at almost a year prior to launch when Colin said they would like to increase the level cap.

Legendary armor is still a few years away. Any talk about it now is simply guessing.

The series 2 legendaries should be announced sometime later this year, maybe once the living story arc ends. Depending on how these are made, you’ll be able to make a more accurate prediction.

Would you be happier if 1 ascended weapon dropped and everyone who participated got to roll on it? That’s why RNG can feel so bad.

Personally, I think they should have gone with a limited personal and traditional loot system, because people would feel more rewarded for seeing the possibility of winning an item, rather than not knowing. In the end, it’s the same thing rewards-wise.

What happened to the manifesto?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Healix.5819

Healix.5819

The manifesto is true – when taken in context and you understand what they’re referring to. A few things are a little exaggerated however.

The manifesto never said that there would be no grind at all. They said that you wouldn’t be forced to grind to experience content. In other MMOs, you have to grind dungeons to do raids and have to grind raids to do further raids, all to just experience the story. In GW2 however, you can experience all content in basic gear.

When Colin talks about grinding in the manifesto, it’s in the context of quests and combat. He’s referring to how you’re forced to grind “kill 10 rats” quests to fully experience the main quest line. In comparison, the personal story doesn’t feature any filler quests and instead, you’re given the freedom to play how you want in between the steps. He further talks about the grind of combat, which could be referring to mob grinding, which some games still force, or combat in general due the difference in play styles of action vs regular combat.

In the written manifesto, they further mention treadmill grinding. Yes, GW2 does technically feature a treadmill, something that has been known months prior to launch (level cap increase), but what they’re referring to is an actual forced treadmill grind as seen in other games. So far, GW2 seems to be on roughly a 2 year treadmill, which is very relaxed compared to what you might see in other active MMOs, where you may see a new tier every few months.

By the time ascended gear is actually required, which may be never because they could always just increase the level cap, it will be easier to get. That was the manifesto’s promise.

For WvW, they have specifically stated that it is not meant to be fair. For ascended gear, they have talked about alternate options a while ago, but never seemed to go anywhere with it. When it comes to actual play, ascended gear is not required unless you’re doing 1vs1, in which case that’s not what WvW was designed for. When it comes to groups vs groups, odds are just as many people aren’t going to have the gear, so it averages out.

They probably consider it a very low priority issue since you can use 3rd party resources to find the items you want and then search the trading post for those specific items. They did have plans for a search by profession filter though. The filter is actually there, it’s just hidden and not implemented on their side.

Prioritize Maps to Server

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Healix.5819

Healix.5819

Home worlders do get priority over guesters… when queued. If a guester gets there first however, prior to being overflowed, they’re first.

Kicking players out of the map who are probably in the middle of something because someone else thinks they deserve the spot more is not an option, and it would be considered griefing – by ArenaNet. If they would do that, why stop there? Why not kick everyone not actively participating in the event. Might as well also kick players who aren’t level 80 and in full ascended. Let’s also give priority to people with the higher /age and achievement points.

You shouldn’t have a problem doing Tequatl in an overflow, assuming you didn’t show up at the last second (because at that point, the main overflows are full).

Achievement leaderboard

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Healix.5819

Healix.5819

Being #1 on a permanent achievement points leaderboard would take an extreme amount of dedication – far more than a casual 2 hours a day. Some of those achievements (WvW) take years of grinding. Then there’s the whole HoM achievements, which require playing another game for a few months, which would cause a lot of complaints.

Simply put, a permanent achievement points leaderboard would be dominated by a far worse “no life” requirement. After maybe 10 years of playing casually though, you too could be tied in the #1 spot.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

The fee is because of WvW – it was free for the few several months. People/guilds would switch servers to force a loss by not participating and lots of people just want to win, so they would switch to whatever server is winning.

All skins should be unlimited use. They shouldn’t even be items, they should be something you collect, like achievements. A transmutation stone is what should be the limited uses, not the skin. For a cosmetic end game, the implementation they have is terrible.

Hopefully, the wardrobe they’re wanting to add is not just a copy of the PvP skin locker.

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Healix.5819

Healix.5819

Selling dungeon spots by itself is considered okay. Also note that ArenaNet will not intervene in player made agreements.

Kicking players at the end of a dungeon is considered griefing. They used to recommend reporting it through support, but I don’t think they do that anymore. Reporting the person in-game is pointless since there’s no evidence and you can’t explain the situation. They probably flag the account after a certain amount of unique reports however.

Advertising a selling service in the LFG tool is not what the tool was intended for. They’ve said to report this (right click the listing), but have never further commented on it.

GW2 on steam?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

In one of the AMAs:

No, it almost certainly won’t be on Steam. Valve has some new business terms will keep almost all new MMOs off Steam.

Keep in mind the GW2 client is free to download from our web site and has no copy protection. (And if it’s really important, you can add non-Steam games to your Steam library.)

Basically, Steam would take a cut of the profits, including gems, and since Steam would offer them nothing besides advertising, it’s not worth it.

Any news on guesting out of your home region?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Healix.5819

Healix.5819

When switching regions, your account data is transferred one datacenter to the other. This would cost them bandwidth and database processing to transfer the records and verify them. The last thing you would want is a simple transfer without a backup and something to go wrong, so the amount of stored data they would have would be doubled, increasing costs.

They have to transfer the data, else there would be major lag in anything that interacted with your character (which could reveal dupe exploits), plus you would have to assume their servers even support accessing cross region data. The amount of communication between the datacenters would greatly increase, increasing costs. I doubt they’d do cross region instances either, due to this cost.

If they were to implement cross region guesting, it would have to be very limited. Transferring account data shouldn’t be a common occurrence. They would have to make a special guesting option to permanently guest until disabled, with something like a 24+ hour cooldown once disabled. I’d guess they would also charge a fee for it since they wouldn’t want everyone to do it.

500 jewel crafting and cooking were confirmed when ascended crafting was first announced. They stated that all professions would be raised to 500.

I imagine jewel crafting will be less popular for the existing items (assuming they even include them), so silver/gold/whatever should see less of an impact.

A little while back a dev said to not delete ascended materials because there would be more uses for them. Assuming he didn’t mean what little recipes they have added (excluding ascended gear), I’m expecting jewel crafting to be able to make infusions using exotic orbs as the type, and then a lot of bloodstone/dragonite/empyreal so that there is an actual sink for them.

PvP skins to PvE, save dupes?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Healix.5819

Healix.5819

If they’re going to be simple, they’ll simply copy and reverse the PvE to PvP skin function, meaning you’ll lose the PvP skin. With the way they currently do things, I doubt they’d want you to be able to create an infinite amount of copies, so I would expect it to be a 1 time use and soul bound.

What the game needs however is a wardrobe. A system that allows you to pick whatever skin you want once you’ve unlocked it, similar to the achievement or HoM skins, but costing a transmutation stone. Considering GW2 is supposed to have a cosmetic end game, this should have been a high priority feature.

To be safe, keep any duplicates, assuming you want the skin.

My Thoughts on The 'Extractor' Being Added

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: Healix.5819

Healix.5819

If they added ascended upgrades, they’re going to either be very rare drops or crafted. I doubt they’d even make then forgeable using exotics, due to the massive dump that would cause. They would never drop them as gear pieces that had to be extracted, and even if they did, ascended gear would be so common at that point, they would have made them salvageable. Nothing in the gem store has ever been required.

You also have to factor the possibility of legendary upgrades, which would be worth a lot more than an extractor. I imagine legendary upgrades could be as simple as allowing you to swap stats and/or add a weapon effect.

With the current progression discussion they’re doing, they should begin to reveal just how far they’re willing to go. Infusions for example were confirmed a long time ago to be the next thing to get upgraded, but now that’s up for debate.

With current exotic upgrades however, the extractor is not worth it, nor was it meant to be. Think about what would happen if it was cheaper to reuse your upgrades rather than to buy them. Eventually, everyone would have the upgrades they wanted and no longer have to buy them, causing the prices to eventually be capped at that of the extractor, which in the end, will mean that players are spending less gold, which is related to how much gold vs money players spend. ArenaNet is losing out on short term gains, but in the long term, they’re not.

Remote Desktop.

If you really wanted to, you could rig up a client/server macro to show a map on one screen that runs a macro to put a waypoint in chat and click/use it on the other. If ArenaNet implemented a /slash command to use a waypoint, it’d be perfect.

What happen to Fractals Leaderboard?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Healix.5819

Healix.5819

We’re holding the leaderboard for now to see if we can’t decide on a better way to help differentiate people on it who are all at the same tier, other than just the first who got there specifically. Once we have decided that, we’ll need to code, test, and vet it and then update the leaderboards to reflect the new tracking.

Time taken to complete individual Fractals?

That would make a giant mess of a leaderboard. They’d have to split it into a leaderboard for every fractal, ranking it by time completion and level, unless they wanted to potentially have the same person on the board multiple times.

They could do time taken to complete 1 entire run or the level boss, but that’s not really fair due to fractal RNG. To reduce that RNG, they would have to remove the randomness as to which fractal you could get and instead, make the specific combination of fractals always occur at the specific level. Removing the RNG could be a good thing, since then people wouldn’t be able to re-roll it and they could balance the instabilities to be more specific, but at the same time, that would mean people would be doing the same few fractals over and over and over (level 50).

Even then, both options are going to make it so there’ll always be 5 people tied. It’d be better if it could be grouped by groups/guilds, since individual ranking is kind of pointless when it’s a group activity.

Upgrade extractor price

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: Healix.5819

Healix.5819

It’s a luxury item and not meant for everyday use. They don’t want everyone to suddenly extract all their upgrades rather than buy them. That would only lead to a market crash and a loss of another gold sink.

Eventually however, there’ll probably be a lot more uses for it. There’ll probably be ascended runes and sigils by next year, which will probably be crafted, account bound and cost a lot. Legendary runes and sigils are also a possibility (swap between any rune/sigil), which I imagine would cost a lot more than 20g. For now though, I’m guessing the only valued use is on the laurel and agony infusions.

For Windows,

Start by opening the trading post.

Press CTRL+SHIFT+ESC to open the Window’s Task Manager. Under processes, look for awesomium_process.exe. If it’s not there, go back to GW2 and open the gem store, exchange, sell tab or trading post and check again (do not close the window). If awesomium_process is still not there, you have either file corruption in GW2.dat or it can’t write to your app data.

If you’ve found awesomium_process, right click it and select open file location. This should bring up a folder names gw2cache-{…} with a data folder in it. Close GW2 and completely delete the gw2cache folder. Ensure that no files remain.

Once the gw2cache folder no longer exists, open GW2 and try again. Note that if you have an internet problem, it’s possible to re-cache the corrupted trading post page.

Open the following web page. If you have Firefox, use it since it’s more strict when it comes to the certificate.
https://tradingpost-live.ncplatform.net/

The page should appear as “ERROR: Invalid Authorization”

If it doesn’t, you have a network/dns issue (or certificate error, but that one will be obvious).

If you pass the above and you want to start debugging, download and install Fiddler. Fiddler will allow you to see the requests and responses the trading post makes as well as allow you to bypass any certificate errors. To use Fiddler, simply start it, allow any certificates it says to install, and open the trading post. The requests should begin appearing. The response for the requests is what you want to look at, to see if anything is modifying your connection to the trading post.
