It’s not the same fight from GW1. This one happens over 1000 years prior to that game.
http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Timeline

What really enticed me about that battle, was that you were never given all the information about it in a single exposition. You got little bits here and there during the nightfall campaign. And you got more pieces of the puzzle if you ventured off from the main story and explored side quests and went into nooks and crannies to speak to npcs. Then, as you pieced it together(while playing nightfall), you started to see how Abbadon’s story ties into the events you experienced in Prophecies and Factions, and that realization was pretty cool.

So to me the story is not just the plot, but how I experienced it as a player. I think that is what entices a lot of GW1 veterans.

Evon’s content, Fall of Abbadon, sounds like it is going to be much more work from a production standpoint.

Thaumanova already has a map and the enemies can just be current GW2 enemies reused. Aaatxes, Shadowfiends… stuff just teleported from around GW2 would suffice.

For Abbadon, Anet will have to create an interpretation of the Crystal Sea. They will probably need an interpretation of the Margonite army both pre and post-transformation, since they both existed during that time. They will also need a GW2 version of the Forgotten since that race was the main force on the side of the Gods during that battle. Finally they will also need to implement GW2 versions of the God avatars, of which only Balthazaar has been made so far.

Don’t get me wrong, I want Evon to win, even though I like Kiel more as a character. And I care more about cheap WP than keys. But I can’t pass up the opportunity to see an epic an storied moment in GW lore play out.

My concern is the staggering difference in developer assets that Evon’s project would take in comparison to Kiel’s. If Kiel’s project was something equally epic, such as the Vizier’s sinking of Orr, which would need an not-destroyed Orr and not-undead Orrians, then that option would be somewhat more equal.

So my question is: Will Anet be able to pull through and include everything that should be there, or will we just see a pale imitation of what was described, should Evon win?

[Bug?] Level 24 gear for a level 26 mission?

in Personal Story

Posted by: Lucky.9421

Lucky.9421

I just finished the Charr Undead Detection mission(26) and received level 24 gear.

I have always wondered if this was intentional. Sometimes you get gear appropriate to the level of the mission, other times not. I wonder if at some point Anet re-shuffled the levels of the missions during production but forgot to adjust the loot rewards as an oversight. Sometimes, the levels of the creatures are two levels below as well, making the mission extremely easy.

I would be nice if they go through all the missions at some point for a polish run.

Also you can get really cheap level 8 gear from the auction house. Much cheaper than the white gear sold by the merchant, which is lower stats. Try grabbing a full set. Don’t forget the weapons.

Afterwards, if you are still having trouble, concisely describe exactly where you were and what you fighting. And, if possible, what about those enemies or encounters made them hard.

Anet has done a lot of re-balancing post release. They do listen if you give constructive feedback.

The only thing that I think might be a challenge is that each individual will be responsible for their own dodging, which seems a little scary. I’ll pitch the idea though, thanks for sharing.

If one person dies, do the remaining cannon shots focus on the rest, or do less rounds get fired overall?

[Guide] How to succeed in Aetherblade Retreat

in Sky Pirates of Tyria

Lucky.9421

  • The strategy that I use is for your team to spread out. Ideally, each person should occupy one of the four corners of the arena while the 5th person stays in the middle. The four individuals will move around in their corner to find a safe spot and if they cannot find a safe spot then they will move a little bit towards the center (diagonally). The 5th person in the middle will try to find a safe spot and if they do not have one they will move up or down (forward or backward from the center).
    • Reasoning: This spreads out the AoE since the cannons target the players and if everyone is grouped up then there is a higher chance that someone will take a lot of damage or die from the cannon barrage. Also, if everyone moves to the center then every other area (the corner areas) will be safe spots. So at most the strategy only puts 1-2 people at risk of death.

This part in particular is interesting as we were using the strategy of running around in a circle in one group, which eventually worked for us on the 5th try.

I was thinking there might be a better way.

Have you tried the running-around-in-a-circle method? If so, how would you compare the difficulty compared to your method in regards to individual skill needed?

I would like to see tPVP MM system like this:

1+1+1+1+1 vs 1+1+1+1+1;
2+1+1+1 vs 2+1+1+1;
2+2+1 vs 2+2+1;
3+1+1 vs 3+1+1;
3+2 vs 3+2;
4+1 vs 4+1;
5v5.

Yes, it should always try to do this first. But with a small population that can lead to really long wait times. So there should be a little leeway. For example, after 1 minute, if it can’t find a perfect match, it would try the next closest match.

I have actually experienced much fewer leavers and afkers in GW2 than I did in my first ~10-15 levels of LoL, which took about that long before I was getting consistent 5v5s. I guess LoL’s system weeds them out but it sure takes a while. YMMV

It slightly surprises me that GW2 does so well because I don’t think there is any kind of system like that on here. If not, there should be.

From these posts, I guess others are having a worse experience. I have had only a few 4v5s and I’ve played about 100 tourney games.

Conditions don't work on Null. Why?

in Last Stand at Southsun

Posted by: Lucky.9421

Lucky.9421

So there are a lot of complaints/critiques about the latest update, but I feel this one is important enough to warrant it’s own discussion.

The last part of the fight is a dps race, so it can be very hard for parties that have people with conditions. This is really unfair to classes that are very condition based or have hybrid builds.

I actually wonder if this is a bug because at the very start of the fight, he does get affected by conditions. Once his shield goes up, they no longer affect him which makes perfect sense. After you bring his shield down, you would expect conditions to affect him again. However, that is not the case. He will be immune, with or without his shield, from that point forward. If this was intentional, why not just have him immune from the start?

Is this a bug or intentional? If intentional, don’t you feel this is unfair to players who are heavy on conditions?

I think Null doesn't work as it should

Voice overs Bugged in Canach's Lair

A couple guildies and I were having this issue. Most of of Canach and Kiel’s speech bubbles had no voice over at the end of the dungeon. A few did play, randomly interspersed among those that were silent. Another guildie got no VO’s at all. For another guildie, it was fine.

I sometimes have this problem where one or two lines of VO won’t play in random places but, in this instance, it was particularly bad. I don’t hear about it that often so I am not sure if it is that common or even a known bug.

Anyone else have this problem?

Super Adventure Box gives me motion sickness

in Super Adventure Box

Posted by: Lucky.9421

Lucky.9421

I honestly don’t know why this is happening specifically in SAB.

I think the most offending areas are probably the jump pads and then the raft sequence. A LOT of rapid and substantial point-of-view changes going on there, comparative to regular GW2 play. Another problem could be certain areas that are really claustrophobic and thus cause rapid camera spasms.

When the eye wants to focus on a point, but it can’t because that point keeps moving around due to constant frame shift, that is what causes motion sickness. Have you ever heard of people who experience motion sickness while reading in a car? It is the same thing. They are trying focus on the text while the vibrations of the vehicle shifts their head around, slightly but rapidly and constantly.

I really don’t think color has anything to do with it.

My suggestions.

1. When crafting future levels, try to build them such that the camera has room to operate. Don’t make anything too tight or narrow.

2. Slow down the upward acceleration of jump pads.

3. If you have anything like the raft, also slow it down.

I bet if you research motion sickness enough, you can find resources out there that will provide guidelines for building content to avoid it.

The Return of Cut Scenes

in Flame and Frost

Posted by: Lucky.9421

Lucky.9421

IIRC, the dialogue cutscenes used in the Personal Story are actually a higher quality model than the ones used during normal play, so they have the much more complex facial structure to handle the facial expressions and lip-syncing during talking. Could be wrong, but that’s likely why.

I don’t think so. As an experiment, try some of the emotes from the link in game and look at your character’s face.

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Emote

You’ll see that your character can do very detailed and charming expressions. If I had to guess, and I am no expert, I would say the facial expressions for those emotes are baked into the animations, the same goes for the dialogue sequences. But to get that level of quality for every single instance of spoken dialogue in the game, they would have to go through and make specific animations for every single one. Meaning a lot of extra work and additional files to the .DAT. Literally thousands.

Or they could create a new dynamic system that can do it real-time, which is what the new lip-flap system is probably a primitive form of. But creating such a thing would be something new that doesn’t exist in any game I know of.

The first option is probably the more realistic one, but I am sure it is not trivial.

PS – Third option could be do what I mentioned in the first one, but only for cutscenes, and keep the lip-flap system for dynamic events. That would be less of an undertaking.

(edited by Lucky.9421)

The Return of Cut Scenes

in Flame and Frost

Posted by: Lucky.9421

Lucky.9421

I like where they are going with this as well. My only criticism is that the facial expressions and lip-syncing in the new cutscenes are not as good as the dialogue sequences. Is it possible to improve on these?

I know GW2 is capable of doing really good facial expressions. The best examples are actually in the emotes, those are even better than the dialogue sequences.

But perhaps there are technical or resource limitations to achieving that level of quality consistently? I think overcoming them would be worthwhile.
