Yes. That must be it. They’re all faked.

Not all, just the good reviews?

Meanwhile: http://en.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/2bl5pq/july_24th_1700_cest_round_table_with_ramon_domke/

Yes, with the start of megaservers german players founded serverindependant communities. At first to organize big events like tequatl and other champions. Later they also organized other PvE events and grew fast. Many people supported these communities (designers, programmes, youtubers).
One of the biggest communities made contact to Ramon Domke from the german gw2-forums. From this contact originates the idea of oral player feedback, I think. They organize these round tables. Talk power is given to one ambassadors for each german server and ambassadors from some gw2-web services like guildnews and wartower. Those ambassadors collect information and opinions from their communities and bring it to the round table.
There are two topics on each session. First weak topics were the guild system and the impression of the first part of season two of the living story.
Yesterda it was WvW in general and part two of the living story.

Whether this brings any results is questionable. At least anet gets some filtered opinion from a large player base istead of flaming forum posts.

Did you try rabid armor and power runes (like scolar) to get the stats you want with more toughness instead of vitality?

Something like this?

I also changed predator’s instinct to spotter as cripple is already done by sword#1 and dagger#5 and changed swiftness on weapon swap to protection on dodge.

Flexible hybrid PvP build

Thanks for your feedback.

Well I tried out the spirit builds, but pretty often I find myself fighting alone in crucial situations. In solo-q the communication with other players doesn’t work well. Maybe that changes when I have played some more games.
Of course one can also change quickly into a spirit build by changing two traits and 2-4 utilities. By doing this you might sacrifice some survivability (condition remove and stun breakers replaced by healing and protection) or damage (bleed burst and fury replaced by burning and damage boost). Especially in the time when the spirits are on cd. I will have to find out what I like better.
Perhaps I should use the spirit-build in team-q to get to know how to play it properly.

The bleeding duration is increased by 65% in this build. I have not increased general condition duration. As I am only focossing on my bleeds.

The very high condition remove works as intended. I chose the trait SotF mostly for the fury. Condition builds have hardly any impact on me, which makes me superior in a fight against condition classes. In times, where others cry about OP conditions and players are following this advice by playing condition burst themselves, my build counters this trend and follows it at the same time :-)

I am still playing against weak players as I have just startet playing PvP. Most probably I will have to change the build when I play against better enemies.

The most funny situation I had yet was me sitting on the cannon at skyhammer and not recognizing that two players were attacking me while I was busy shoting. One had a struggle with my pet and the other one was trying to give me conditions, which were permanently transfered to my pet ^^.

how many armor sets do you have?

I have differents sets of armor and accessories. Some for PvE but most for different WvW builds.
Armor:

  • berserker with ranger runes
  • soldier with resistance runes
  • cavalier with Lyssa runes
  • rabid with undead runes
  • clerics with trooper runes

Accessories:

  • ascended berserker with agony resistance infusions
  • exotic knight with emerald jewels
  • exotic dire with coral jewels
  • ascended cleric with wvw infusions

I’m planning some more sets, but didn’t choose yet which one might be next. Most probably celestial or settler.

Flexible hybrid PvP build

in Ranger

Posted by: Oak da Vite.9054

Oak da Vite.9054

I’m playing gw2 for a long time, but I just started with PvP. Mostly I’m playing solo-q.
I made up a build that is flexible and can fit into most situations while staying effective. It is neither full bunker nor full power nor full condition but can manage a good amount of all three things depending on the amulet I choose.

The build is mostly made up around Sharpened Edges. I like the trait, because it has no cooldown and can be a good damage improvement combined with Rune of the Krait and a shortbow.

My stats with 0/2/6/6/0 are rather bunker-stats. To fit my build into the team I sometimes exchange some traits, but I normally leave the stats as they are. My weapons are shortbow and sword/dagger.

This is the way I love to play this build most of the time:
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fNAQNAV8YjEqUzaLLmsQ1aADhqdL0BlArAwdR8CXdFLkC-TpRAwAAeAAUuAAdOCAlLD45gA0b/BA

Advantages:

  • I can go for really high condition remove with Survival of the Fittest and Empathic Bond. Against conditon spammers like necros, engis and some rangers I have hardly any trouble then.
  • I have a huge amount of evades on one weapon set. Sometimes I can do my dance against up to three enemies and wait for my teammates to arrive and help me or give them time to capture points.
  • I will do one condition (bleeding) which will stack up really fast and needs to be removed continously by the enemy to avoid the damage done.
  • With my elite I have a huge condition burst which can hit the enemy hard when he is unprepaired.
  • I have good toughness and ok vitality against power builds. I also have a good protection uptime, lots of dodges and evades.
  • With only little changes I can fit the build to enemy team compositions and to my role in our team.
  • When I go defensive with sword/dagger, I have a good poison uptime and still do a medicore amount of bleeds.

Disadvantages:

  • The build is hybrid, i do not excel at any dicipline.
  • I need my teammates help to down good bunkers.
  • I am not a typical pointholder with this build though I can survive for some time.
  • I lack stability and when I don’t pay attention, I will become a bouncing ball for the enemy (this risk can be reduced by switching the elite).
  • There might be some disadvantages I do not know of because I am not very experienced in PvP.

Before the fight starts I choose the role in my team and look at the classes of the enemy team. There are some changes to the build that can be done easily and really fast to fit the build to the situation. Mostly I only exchange Quickening Zephyr to a diffenrent skill or exchange my pets. Sometimes I change my amulet to a more defensive or offensive playstyle.

Build-Variation:

  • If there are two or more thieves in the enemy team, I choose “Sick ’Em” as third skill.
  • If there are many warriors in the enemy team, I choose “Protect me” and a bear. Also I choose Shared Angish instead of Expertise Training.
  • If there are many direct damage classes in the enemy team and no condition bursters, I exchange Empathic Bond for Bark Skin.
  • If there are many melees in the enemy team, I prefer to choose the Lashtail Devourer as a pet.
  • If I need to go more defensive, I choose Celestial Amulet.
  • If I need to bunker a point, I choose Cleric or Settlers Amulet. Then I also might exchange my beloved Sharpened Edges for Primal Reflexes and choose some defensive runes.
  • If we need more damage in the team I go for Rampager or even Berserker Amulet.

What do you think of this build? How can I improve it? What would you do differently?

Why do you use “Shared Anguish”?
In my opinion the cd is way too high for it to be usefull.
For me “Vigorous Renewal” is the better option as it allows you to dodge more often and also gives vigor to allies in combination with healing spring.

Oak da Vite.9054

If you lack some sustained damage within your trap/condition build you could improve your bleeding rate. For example by piercing arrows, sigills, buffood, etc. With a crit-rate of about 50% and fury (extra 20%) sharpened edges triggers at almost 50% of your shots.
Also use RaO for the might stacks (eg. with the poison fiel of carrion devourer). 25 might stacks are a whole lot of extra condition damage.
With this build I could make bleed stacks of 10 and more at different players within the enemy zerg:
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fNAQNBlODbkRlyVbXxlFuWDEIELHCaPP+ycZLlXkBmUB-TlSAwAaUCKU9HKPgAIHJAHm/mp7ZwFAAwBV4qyPm7PQKAmEGB-w

For mobility rather use your vigor (by dodging) than greatsword (wich shouldn’t be used for condition damage build) or at least use the sword for mobility and evades. You will need the horn for blasting water fields and getting fury.

If you have problems with conditions on you, get a good guard for your group. Then you might also think about using bark skin or offensvie buffood as well.

Take Signet of the Stone ans Bark Skin against direct damage enemies (most warriors, guards, eles, thieves, longbow rangers) or Signet of Renewal and Empathic Bond against condi-spammers (most ingis, necros, mesmers, sword/axe rangers).

Pro: A lot of healing sources, almost 100% vigor and regenertion uptime. Good protection uptime. A whole lot of dodging and evasion. Good condition damage. Really high toughness (up to 3869 armor).

Contra: Little group support and bad synegy with other classes. Easily countered with good condition removal.

Direct damage Bunker-Build:
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fNAQNAR8XjEq0yaJL+rw1aABhaVA0uGu3Wwd+mDfdGPVisJ-TVCEABJ8AAKUJoN7PElyv4OigunJV/piDGAAXggHOACBAQAu5NzmtZbezbezDdoDdoDdoN0bO0bO0hWKAmUGB-w

Greatsword to stack might, fury and weaponstacks. Signet of Renewal and Empatc Bond against condi builds. “Protect me” (with murrelow also for might stacking on RaO) and Bark Skin against direct damage builds.

Pro: Better condition remove, more damage, high amount of might and fury uptime, a lot of evades, good protection uptime, viable in Zerg-play (with two bears or drake/bear), high toughness.

Contra: Little healing, only good direct damge, little group support, untrained pets.

Why I don’t use these builds all the time: Lack of group support as I hardly play alone…

Give WvW more PvP

Oak da Vite.9054

No. Absolutely not. Yes, uplevels are really annoying to have next to you because they can be rallybots (level 80s can also be rallybots). Not allowing them though… man, I’d just rather tear my hair out if I, a PvP player, am forced into PvE to level. I absolutely hated in TESO that you gotta grind out 10 slow levels just to get to the PvP. It was so painful. Don’t make me have to grind out 80 levels in this game to do WvW.

Well, I only have one lvl 80 character because I don’t like both:

  • Leveling new Characters in PvE because I have already explored most of the map and done all kind of PvE-events and got to know the personal story.
  • Leveling in WvW because I don’t want to hurt my server and I don’t like karma-trains which is nothing else than PvE content on WvW maps.

The solution: Tomes of knowledge either for badges or with daily achievements.

I think it is fair to request from a player to level at least one character in PvE-content to level 80 (or at least 60) to get to know the game mechanics and the different aspects of PvE in this game.

in WvW

Posted by: Oak da Vite.9054

Oak da Vite.9054

No to most of this. WvW already lags behind PvE in terms of rewards so reducing them will only leave players more deflated.

I don’t want the rewards to be reduced. I simply don’t like the method of running around in blobs an capturing empty structures to gain loot. Loot shoult be a reward for playing good and clever and beating the enemy by strategy and not for following a blue sign on the map without thinking. I edited the text to underline this.

Lets imagine the forum revolt if this ever made it into the game… ughhh.

It’s sad people got used to WvW as it is with running karma-trains and trying to capture things where there is no defence only to get loot.

My favourite hours in WvW were alway long fights with pushing enemies out of structures and long sieges with slowly draining them from having materials in their buildings. This implies often many PvP fights. But after 2 fights winning (not yet gaining the structure) there is hardly any loot, because it is always the same players running into death to defend their structures. Both parties should be more rewarded for epic fights like these and not hurt, because they play as intended and don’t blob into empty structures to get enough loot to make the time playing wothwhile.

Threfore defending should give more rewards and killing players as well.

1. No. I like my loot bags. I would like a system where the more people participate in the event, the less loot they get.
2. No. Do this and zergs will karma farm yaks.
3. No. Fix rally mechanic instead.

I edited my first post to less drastic changes.

Risks:
1. Lesser people do WvW
2. Even lesser people do WvW.
3. Even Even lesser people do WvW.

You might want to review your suggestions.

I know more people not playing WvW anymore because of blobbing and karma-trains than people really having fun blobbing and running karma trains. I added the suggestion of a seperate WvW daily to motivate people to come to WvW.

4. low lvls now got WvW abilities point’s and can be better than most of 80’s without spec.

Well, I don’t think this works as intended and it only works for people already having spent much time in WvW.

Give WvW more PvP

in WvW

Oak da Vite.9054

In my opinion WvW lacks rewards for defending structures and fighting enemy players. Attacking and defending stategies are getting poorer, because attacking unprotected structures is more benificial.
The problem is the loot you get for capturing empty structures. You didn’t fight any enemy, but you get loot from veterans and champions which is equal or even more benificial than fighting enemy players.
Therefore whole servers are mobilizing a lot of players to play on times they know the enemy has few players. They run in a huge blob and flip structures on every map. This is widely known as PvD (player versus door), because there is hardly any enemy player they fight against and even if the 2-3 defenders should be able to destroy the siege of the attacking crowd, the attackers autoattack the door down, because they are so many. In EOTM this behavior is even worse. It became standard to capture structures in rotation.

In my opinion the rewards for capturing structures with high numbers of players are too high because of the lootbags and levels the NPCs give. Also the attacking event gives more benefits than defending.

My suggestions to improve the benefit for defending and fighting enemy players:

  1. No loot from NPCs or limit the lootbags from NPCs in WvW according to their rank – For example 10 player get lootbags for veterans and 20 player get loot from champions. This way there is less loot in huge blobs and the same loot for small groups.
  2. Better balance the rewards for events in WvW – at the moment capturing a structure gives too much compared to defending a structure, killing or protecting dolyaks.
  3. Give less rewards per player the more players participate in an event – cut down the rewards of blobbing and improve the status of smaller groups.
  4. Do not allow lowlevels in WvW – they cannot even use all their skills and the upscaling of numbers doesn’t help, because they have white/green/blue armor and the least you should have is exotic armor.
  5. Make up a seperate WvW daily – this improves the motivation to go into WvW and equals the lack of rewards the players get because of the reward scaling of events. Also add tomes of knowledge to these daily rewards because leveling in WvW is not possible anymore.
  6. Increase the loot from player kills – because world vs world massively lacks loot compared to other gamemodes, loot should be increased for killing enemies. Especially badges should only be given for killing players, not npcs.

If you make it like this, blobbing up and turning in cricles would give less benefit than splitting up and run in smaller groups. Defending a structure would give you more rewards than capturing, because you will get at least one event while the attacker only gets one at most.

Some nice add-ons would be:

  • Connect the quality of the loot dropped by a dead enemy to the WvW-Level of the enemy – by this good players get more of a challenge.
I know high WvW level doesn’t necessarily mean high skill, but there is a good correlation between skill and experience.
  • Block waypoints on attacked structures for 20s (or the time it takes to make one shot with a trebouchet from max range) with overlapping timestamps – this way you also need scouts on structures with waypoints to stop the enemies from hitting doors.
  • Make it impossible to port to any waypoint while being within reach of a structure that is infight – make it harder for the defending/attacking crowd to get away once they see that they will loose the fight. This grants more lootbags when attacking a structure that is defended.

Benfits:

  • more search for fights because this is the only way to get loot
  • less rewards to play in low-activity times – no enemy, no loot
  • more rewards for the not so popular events like pushing/killing dolyaks, defending structures
  • new strategies needed to attack better defended structures – I like complex situations

Risks:

  • it might become even harder to capture structures against enemies with higher numbers
  • no loot, because the enemy runs away all the time or there is no enemy on the map in the times you play

I hope for a constructive discussion. Maybe some points could get more elaborate but I am convinced this would change the modus WvW to be more like a PvP modus than a PvE modus.

Help! Bows and arrows against the lightning?

in Ranger

Oak da Vite.9054

It is always a question what you want to build for and against. Is it worth going for more direct damage or condition damage while losing some survivability? What builds do you have problems to fight against and which builds are an easy kill for you?

Me, for example, I have no problem to fight zerker builds. But some condition and hybrid builds give me a hard time. As I am playing in groups quite often, I lack some condition remove while running solo. I could change my build for more condition remove, but I would either loose survivability or damage, which might result in loosing against zerkers and giving a worse performance for the group.

Another question ist the importance of killing someone or not getting killed. If you are the agressor, you want to kill your enemy fast to capture. If you are the defender, you want ot stay alive as long as possible while slowly getting rid of the agressors.

If they seem immortal, they either use blocks and invunerability at the right time or they have a lot of healing.
In the first case you should have a better timing. In the second case poison is your friend.

Your stats seem alright for group play. If you run solo, you will learn to love healing power which you didn’t even mention.

I can tell you that it is sometimes quite funny to ignore rangers shooting at you while running over the map. I, as a ranger, can easily ignore the damage done by the bow while running using perma regeneration and signet of the wild. Sometimes I am annoyed when these rangers don’t give up shooting at me, because one is so much slower while being infight. Then I turn around, avoid damage spikes with “Protect!” and kill the ranger with my sword while using my evades against most of their damage. If they should get me low life my bark skin makes my healing power even more effective. Then the enemy often makes mistakes, because he thinks he almost got me down, gets too agressive and forgets his defense.

I’d prefer runes of Lyssa with that build as it removes conditions and not only shortens condition duration.
For me there are two ways to make conditions absolutely worthless for your enemy:
1. Focus on lowering condition duration. Melandru runes, (buff food), …
– Other classes can do this better, because they can trait for shorter condition duration.
2. Going for a lot of condition removes without shortening condition duration.
– If you are able to remove most of the conditions there is no need to reduce the duration of the conditions still left on you.

Btw. I know this is only a counter build on condition spamming you could use for fun in a 1v1, I’d say. Don’t know how effective it might be against direct damage. Also I’d use other weapons with it for even more evades and better damage output.

Advice on Ranger

in Ranger

Posted by: Oak da Vite.9054

Oak da Vite.9054

@GUFF:
The Problem about your build is:
You are doing single Target damage
Going into a zerg fight with a longbow and without piercing arrows doesn’t make sense in my opinion. You need to hit as many opponents as possible. This increases the possibility that one target gets down early. This increases the awards you get from a fight. This increases the possibility to rally (I am not saying you should use this to become a rallybot, but everyone gets downed sometime in a damagespike). This increases the large amount of damage you do within a fight. This increases hugely the damage at the beginning of the fight.
I’m not saying your build is bad, but it shouldn’t be used with a longbow. Better use an axe for it.

Your calculations about omnomberry pie are interesting. You assume that all your arrows hit the target. There are certain classes that can avoid to be hit critically. Also any block or evade will decrease the amount of your heal. Still it sounds like a good amount of healing for many crit builds. Permanent regeneration is only useful if you gear for it an make group support, so all members of the group can benefit. Or if you run solo vs max 3-4 players. Otherwise healingpower is not worth considering.

Permanent critical damage in your build does not increase your overall damage by much. You can better profit from crit sigils and crit bufffood, but your basic damage is lower wich makes you critstrikes less hard. If you want to trade for survival of the fittest, you could decrease your amount of points in skirmishing and still benefit from piercing arrows and spotter.
Any longbow zerg build should have at least 4 points in marksmanship to increase the efficiency of the bow.

What are Rangers for?

Oak da Vite.9054

There is one thing the Ranger excels at that no other class has:
Longbow + Eagle Eye = longest range attack in the game.
+ Read the Wind = it also won’t miss.

This works best in WvW and PvE open world(especially world bosses), but no group in any game mode (PvE, sPvP, WvW) will ask you for it.

As the others from your team will have to take more damage. That is why people hate rangers. Because of their egoistic gameplay. Sorry this was not directed at you personnaly but I hate the attitude of: “As long as I don’t die I am not bad….”

Rangers can really make a good job for the team. They can eat damage and regenerate it away or absorb it by pet swap. That is what they should be feared for and not for stacking up world events or taking away a place on the map while doing only medicore damage from max range.

Please, always think about the game mechanics and your teammates as well. If you want to do worldbosses from max range do it in ranger only events. Otherwise I would suggest you to cooperate not to be a burden for the team.

And those might stacks can be brought by a ranger as well, but if you use a torch you maybe miss something else. And well, the bow is often one of the worst things a ranger could bring. Well, a ranger does not bring one thing. I think it is always the combination of things you bring that makes the ranger strong. That is why he is so good for small groups. There he can fill out multiple roles. This gives more flexibility to the other team members. In larger groups these combinations are not so much required as there is someone that can do one of the things supposedly better than you.
What you can bring then is quite situational and not needed in standard setup. But if you do well in larger groups you are no burden for your team while bringing in the extra bit for occasional situations that helps your team to win a fight.

The discussion is:

“Is the Rager class that bad?”
Because of broken pet mechanic that doesn’t allow the pet to jump or to dodge. Because of lacking burst damage and too low damage on the longbow. Because of mixed up traits that put traps for example in the wrong trait line and mostly depend on the survival of the pet. Because there is 1/3 of the damage on a pet that is not reliable. Because the support skills are not as usefull as those of other classes.

Or
“Are Ranger players that bad?”
Because they run PvE builds in WvW and think they are so pro because they can kill other noobs. Because they run longbow with sigle target damage (without piercing arrows). Because they use squishy pets in a zerg and are surprised why their pet dies and they loose 1/3 of their damage and skills. Because they are not able to navigate themselves AND the pet securly through a fight. Because they are not able to play a supporting group-oriented build. Because they use builds that make the pet only a scapegoat and don’t see the possibilities to synergise with the pet.

On my point of view the second point has a much higher impact on the thesis than the first. I see hardly any ranger running melee weapons. They are great. Ranger has so many evades while still doing damage in melee fight. I see hardly any Ranger running Spotter even though this is the unique and best support skill the ranger has. Some people learned that in a big fight a bear can survive better and a drake can blast fields but that might be coincidence as the bear absorbs also damage for them in PvE and the chain-lighning is one of the most reliable pet-mass-damage-skills.

I like the class because of the challenge to navigate two characters through a fight. Otherwise this game would lack a challenge for me that makes the game worth playing. Who doesn’t need the challenge and likes running in circles behind a lamp can simply run a warrior or a thieve for they also have bows. Or who wants to run around the fight and wants to cast damage into it without needing to look after the pet can run an ele.

In general:
Stupid idea to call this class Ranger. It is a Beastmaster and has nothing to do with being the best with ranged weapons.

Edit: Don’t understand me wrong. I don’t say: I am so pro that I can do things better. I say: I like the class as it is. You can make something of it, but it takes more efford. And I say: It might not be 100% as useful in melee fights as a warrior or a guard but you can make your warriors and guards more effective while not being useless yourselve at all (damage- and supportwise).

Advice on Ranger

in Ranger

Posted by: Oak da Vite.9054

Oak da Vite.9054

I can see your intention.
Some things are really good and some need to be improved.

Traits:
With piercing arrows you don’t need Read the Wind as you will mostly shoot right into the blob. If you have problems to hit your target then choose Read the Wind. Otherwise I would advice to use Eagle Eye for more damage and range increase or Spotter for a crit-support in your backline.
Moment of Clarity grants you more damage than Companions Might as you will have to switch your pet pretty often. Bleeds you will only need when you either increase condition damage or your zerg is in general going for contion. You could go for some more damage and vigor or increase the pets damage with the Adept-Traits.

Skills:
Signet of the Wild for the passive only makes sense with high healing power. In your case Signet of Stone is a better choise for even more toughness and keeping your pet alive. The 2 stunbreakers make sense. One with evade and one for an extra burst is good. For ulti better use Rampage as One for stability in the fight. You will need it. Situationally you can switch to Entangle. In large group play always use the water field as it helps your group as well and gives some condition remove.

What you lack: Condition remove and Healing (or Vitality). Your Runes don’t fit your build as you won’t change your weapon set that often.

What you can use: You have almost 80% crit chance. Combined with Fury this makes 100%. Use it. Use Signets for either condition transfer/healing on critical hits. Use Omnomberry Ghost for healing on critical hits. Use Runes that give you fury.
If you lack survivability you can instead choose Runes of Lyssa for an “Oh kitten”-button on your ulti. Take the bear as a second pet for some condition remove in fight and to grant that your pet survives the fight or use the wolf to fear enemies away from you. Drakhound or devourer are other possibilities for your pet depending on your likes and playstyle. Simply choose what you think fits best and has enough survivability.

The improved build with vigor damage increase:
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fNUQJATRjMqUyaLLOsw1ag9gadA0AFQrfg9APChQKv6LvtC-T1CBwAGVixT9n+PAAlKPWYeA2+DAuEAt0FQ5IAkwEXGlgECw8CA-w

The improved build with pet damage increased and “Oh kitten”-button on ulti:
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fNUQJATRjMqUyaLLOsw1aAAhadAMA3brUgdFkBXQKr4LvtC-T1CBwAGVixT9n+PAAlKPWYeA2+DAuEAt0FQ5IAkwEXGlgECw8CA-w

For playing: Group up with someone who can give you healing and condition remove and maybe some Stability. Stay outside the fields and the meleetrain when you fight with the Longbow. If you get low either use your ulti, switch weapon and join the meleetrain, if they are in a good position, so you also get the boons and the fields. Or try to get out of fight by using Lighning Reflexes, your ulti, switch weapons and Swoop away from the enemy.

I think there is even more you can improve. I’m not shure if you will need to imcrease your vitality to a minimum, but your high toughness will grant a good survivability in the backline. This is just what I would make of it. Others can maybe give you more and better advice.

Are Rangers THAT bad.

in WvW

Posted by: Oak da Vite.9054

Oak da Vite.9054

Just because 90% play the class so bad it doesn’t mean the whole ranger class is bad. Just as Prysin and Jocksy mentioned there are ways to make a Ranger effective. The problem is not the class as such but the people playing the class. Most are somehow resistent for good advice. Instead they cry in the forums for more damage on the longbow… They play as they like, do single target damage and only scapegoat their pets. So from my side it is: Poor bad ranger players and poor guys telling people to stop playing ranger instad of giving them good advice.

Most of them will never stop playing a rager.
So good luck to all you ranger haters

Shaman Gear?

in Ranger

Posted by: Oak da Vite.9054

Oak da Vite.9054

Shaman gear is the most useless in the game, because it doesn’t make sense to go for healing power and vitality. Healing power is only good combined with toughness. So for survivability you go either vitality (short fights) or healing power/toughness (long fights) but you will never combine healing power and vitality, because healing power heals a lower percentage of your life whe having higher vitality.

I cannot understand why they have such useless gear in the game and lack so many usefull cobinations like Vitality/Power/Precision, Vitality/Precision/Ferocity or Vitality/Power/Ferocity for direct damage focussed on short fights with some survival stats. The good thing about vitality is: It helps against direct and condition damage in contrast to toughness.

Amarith's WvW Ranger (Support & Suppress)

in Ranger

Posted by: Oak da Vite.9054

Oak da Vite.9054

Summary: I just wanted to give a good update to rangers as they are usually denied as a good class in general, usually because most new people play them and haven’t learned to use them right. This is to give you an overview of my play style and what I’ve found to suit me best in a WvW situation and to give you all an insight on what to strive for as this is the best setup I have come across if you want to be a true ranger in WvW, thank you for reading and feel free to ask me any questions!

I’m sorry to contradict you, but your build is part of the reason, ragers are denied as a good class in WvW.

For start I want to tell you what you did right in this build and why you feel more comfortable in WvW than before:
- You don’t run full berserker stats so you don’t drop in the first push.
- You use Rampage as One for stability so it is harder for the enemy to focus you in the first 20s of a fight.
- You try to stay outside the melee fight with your ranged weapon.

But this does’t make your build good. There is very much you can improve.

Firstly even though you use berserker stats your damage is poor compared to other classes. Mainly because you use a longbow. The problem with the longbow is: Without piercing arrows it hits only one target except with barrage. But barrage roots you on one spot wich is also bad for fighting. Your axe does at least 3 times the damage, because it hits 3 targets and also you throw 3 axes in the time you shoot one arrow.

Secondly your build uses hardly any support a ranger can provide. You only give a waterfield you cannot even blast and might and regeneration by your squishy pets. Your pet dies away in seconds if you don’t keep it passive in a fight, but if you keep it passive you will loose part of your potential damage. Your torch might be usefull for stacking might, but as you cannot blast it, it is no help at all. It also does hardly any damage because the firefield lays down right to your feet but you keep standing away from the enemy.

WvW in larger groups ist about adding up support skills for the team, avoiding damage by standing close to each other and doing high damage to as many targets as possible. None of these points fit to your build. Ranger has so much potential of support: Spotter, Signet of Renewal, Firefield, Waterfield, Swiftness and Regeneration by Shouts, Poison fields, AOE-Healing by pet F2, Spirits (but those die too fast in bigger fights), …

Thirdly your defensive part of your build is not good. Instead of soldiers and berserker I would advice you to use knight and cavalier as toughness in WvW is much better than vitality because on long fights healing will give you a higher percentage of your life back. If you want more damage you could add some assasin or berserker, but this will lower your survivability. Also you lack condition remove. As most smallscale and some bigger groups run condition damage, you would simply die away by the condition damage once you are outside your waterfield. And sometimes even your waterfield can’t handle the condition impact.

I know my criticism might sound hard to you, but there is a lot one has to change in the build when coming from PvE to WvW with a ranger. You are still on the very start of it. You did the first step by thinking about your build. Go on and maybe you will become a real help for your sever and your guild.

Edit- Some more advice: Play more with melee weapons. They do more damage an give you some evades. Also switch of auto-targeting and auto-attack for the sword an with some training you will find it quite usefull for fighting. With melee weapons use tankier pets like drakes or even bears. Drakes will blast combo-fields and bears heal themselves while attacking. In midscale fights sometimes pigs and hounds work as well and they also have a leap for combo. Cats, birds, moas and spiders are definitely too squshy for bigger fights when they are not traited in beastmastery.

Oak da Vite.9054

Haha, oh, how I love people thinking like that. They thinking: “A ranger, thats my bag!” Me evading their damage an taking them down or pulling them into an ambush depending on their numbers. So I benefit from the low average skill level of my profession.

I don’t judge a ranger, because he is a ranger, but by his weapon. In the case the ranger is running a longbow it is most likely that you will win the duel. Though there are some rangers that will still give you a tough fight even with longbow. But they are pretty rare.

I call it the bearbow problem. The only cure is education, but somehow many rangers are resinstent… They point out the descipion of the profession is declaring ranger as a ranged fighter… This works in PvE, but in PvP the rules change as the enemy is intelligent and they can’t deal with it…

Simple Solution (but I guess it won’t be fixed as it hasn’t been fixed yet…):
auto-switch to the map
So you can see if there are enough green dots left to revive or you can choose your spawn but you can’t see the enemy anymore.

Btw. dead people should be dumb as for realistic matters

Another reason for people to karma train.

Wrong. Killing enemy players give you many more badges than capturing structures.
In contrast many people now level their twinks in karma trains because you don’t need good armor and gain many XP for all the events.

I would be really happy if anet would combine this with gaining badges only for killing enemy players and not for pve farming in wvw.

WvW Frontliner Power/BM-Build for Zerg

in Ranger

Posted by: Oak da Vite.9054

Oak da Vite.9054

With the new beastmastery grandmaster skill I’m thinking about a BM/Power build. Depending on the numbers of the skill, the additional group healing can give you some more group support.

The aim is, to support the frontline with healing, precision and conditionremove. The build is not for monsterblobbing, but for groups and fights up to 30 people on lower tier servers.

I know, it depends very much on wether the pet survives, but I hope with traits in beastmastery and additional healig there might be some hope. Maybe it is worth a try.

http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vMAQRBHhx+0IjK9r2wiFLctGIWPI0+H07BtiFAcFQVK/4Kr9A-zkCBoLFRjmEAjWGioOI03gUBwZPFRjtMqIasKbYqXER1BAQA43+Wo/Wo/mUAMpMC-w

The rest might be clear:
Marksmanship: Spotter is a must for groupsupport, when you are traited in marksmanship. The passive boons from signets support you and your pet while they give you some escape buttons when you are low health.
Beastmastery: All ist focused on the new grandmaster, when that has bad stats the whole build is crap.
Other traitlines: Choose as you want.

Armor and Accessoirs: Depending on the rest of the group damage can be increased by using more knights, cavalier or even berserker instead of soldiers. Runes of Melandru for less condition duration.

Pets: Bears for max survivability of the pet. Drakes for more damage and explofinishers.

Weapons: Axe/horn or greatsword for running and weapon change. Sword/axe for fighting.

Badges for Tomes of Knowledge?

Oak da Vite.9054

Would be really awesome to be able to exchange badges for tomes of knowledge but not under the current karma train system.

So many people/commanders don’t defend anything because it’s more profitable to let enemies cap and then take it back.

WvW is now pretty much about ignoring enemies and capping empty structures, badges for tomes would just add to this.

You get many more badgets by fighting enemy players than by campturing structures. In contrast to karma and exp. That is why they are called karma-trains not badget-trains. So this will rather help the anti-karma-train fraction. Also there will be less twinks in WvW.

So please make this come true <3 <3

100% pro.

I’m still stuck with only 1 lvl 80 character because PvE is boring. Exploring maps, you explored with your other character, and fightig NPC who are no challenge at all. WvW is the only thing in the game that challenges me for the need of strategic thinking, but I hate going in WvW with twinks because it makes your own team weaker.
My lvl 20 twinks all have lots of skill points because I transfered the Scrolls of Knowledge I found in WvW. But they will never gain any lvl.
I’m already lacking time to play the game so I don’t want to spend the time I have with boring stuff like leveling twinks – this should still be a game and therefore make fun.

Rangers as Anti-Stealth

in Ranger

Posted by: Oak da Vite.9054

Oak da Vite.9054

Some replies here make me think you want to auto q thieves down because they shouldn’t be worth bothering. Of course it is a challenge to finish a thieve in 1v1 and of course there is no non plus ultra build against all kind of enemies.
That is the challenge of this game and that is what i like about it.

Thieves are good agains players with bad reactions and builds that have not enough defence. What is the point about it?

As you can read in other replies here there are builds and ways to finish off thieves. That these builds may not be strong against different kinds of players makes the game fun, because you have to find a way to make the game perfect for you.

As I said: Ragers have, compared to other classes different options to deal with them. Wheather you use them or use other skills, because you prefer those, is your choise.

Rangers as Anti-Stealth

in Ranger

Oak da Vite.9054

What are you asking for?

Ragers have anti stealth already – as the only class btw.

“Sick ’Em” reveals thieves for 4 sec. Should be enough to kill most thieves.
River Drakes F2 is also quite useful, if used in the right moment. Just like the 2 on longbow.
For shadow refuge use the fear of the wolf or your aoe’s like “whirling defence” or “Bonfire” or your traps.

As defensive skills we have “Protect Me” or “Signet of Stone” (when traited) against their burst damage.

There is no need to improve the ranger agains thieves…

When you have mesmers or thieves hiding in your towers, simply ask for good rangers in mapchat or teamspeak. Also if you have thieves killing your dolyaks or permablocking you waypoints.

Sword attack chain is the best that ever happened to the ranger! Simply don’t use auto attack. When you control the chain your target cannot run away.

For stealth removal rangers already have “sick ’em”. It is sufficient to reveal thieves long enough to kill them. Also try the lightning breath from the river drake as it follos the thieve like rapid fire even in stealth.

Ranger shout build ?

I’m running a shout build based on clerics. It is definitly not a damage-build, but you have massive support options and I am hard to be downed. As healing-power also affects your regeneration it has much more use in a shout build than in any other build.
This would maybe be maximum support build (just an example of possibilities):
support build

It is a bit exaggerated, but it shows the possibilities of support a ranger has.
You can also go for condition damage, beastmastery, more crit or anything else.

With x|x|x|30|10 and “Guard” you can permanently give swiftness and regeneration to your whole group.

suggestion - active condition remove

in Ranger

Posted by: Oak da Vite.9054

Oak da Vite.9054

I’m already thinking of using sodier runes as all condition remove except healing spring is dependant on the pet (brown bear, empathic bond and signet of reneval).

I don’t know whether it is a bug or it is on purpose, but sometimes directly after petchange my pet is instantly dead. What does a pet help, when you can’t rely on the mechanics? Why must a passive pet still attack when it gets damaged? Sometimes there is hardly any way to keep the pet alive long enough to become useful. Why must the pet automatically plop out when I am getting attacked? Why can’t I decide when to use my pet for the extra 30% damage to become equal to my enemy and when to keep it safe until the situation is less dangerous so it doesn’t run through all red circles on the whole map? Simply put a cooldown on the “pull out”/“put in” button as it is on “pet swap” and let the player decide when to use the pet.

Since empathic bond needs a living pet the game became a lot more frustrating than before. My build was fully focused on condition removal and it worked well against all condi builds from any classes (mesmer, ranger, ingi). Maybe I did not win the fight, because I didn’t make enough damage. But I was no free kill! I could withdraw from the fight and show my enemy respect that he doesn’t run glasscanon.
Now I am loosing fights because of buggy petmechanics and stupid condition spamming. So much skill : (

The only thing that would help a Ranger in zerg battle is to keep the pet locked away as long as you want to and to let you pull it out when needed. It is so annoying running with a group and alway getting infight because you got hit by a mob and your pet starts fighting it instantly. Also pets die easy and fast in battles and when you need them for condi-remove or protection they are already dead. I don’t understand why we are forced to coordinate our animal as well once we start fighting.

To pull the pet out when needed and put it away when we like it (no heal for the pet while it is in our bag) would be like always having a helpful pet with us and not like running around with an obstacle tied to our leg.

Respect to Drakkar. I didn’t expect you to come out of Bronze League this strong. Holding your Garrison while it had holes like a swiss cheese was well done. I enjoyed running into it with 20 people to get pushed out by 40+ (no ironie). The intention was to keep you away from our hill and to let you spend all your material on repairing. I was surprised you to let our mesmer survive in Longview twice so we could continue firering on garrison with a treb.

@SoW: Don’t expect many fights in open field while there is always other Ranik guilds or your public interfering. Nice damage spike you are making at start of the combat. Quite unusual stile of playing. It won’t take long to find a counter on that. Surprise is on your side, but the more often you meet the same enemies the less you will probably win.

It is always a matter of how you play. I have a lot of healing and with invulnerability I have enough time to get away. With sword or gs you have some speed skills. And as a norn I have the best escape skill anyway.
If I am not alone it is the best for my team if the enemy focuses me, as I hardly do any damage. Meanwhile I can give buffs to the others in my grop and they can focus the enemy down while I give healing and condi-remove when needed.

As I have a lot of condi-remove, I love to play against condi-builts. In contrast I need to be quick against dps-builts and play with a lot of dodging. Against bunker builts there is no winner in most of the duels.
Rangers mostly play condi-builts, so there is no Problem.
I can’t remember a Nekro killing me in 1v1, but I haven’t met many anyway.
Non-bunker Eles are manageable.
Against Mesmers I have least chance of winning a 1vs1. Sometimes I am lucky with a well set chain lightning from my drake. I need to use different skills and weapons there.
DPS-wariors often get me over time as they do more damage than I can heal, while they are still pretty tanky.
I havent met anything else but bunker-guardians. I could hardly harm them while I could easyly heal the damage they make.
I can remember some really good engis, that gave me a lot of damage. Results depend very much on the player-skills.
