About raids: An MMO is a very complex construct which undergoes a lot of change during its lifespan. Anet never said there will be no raids nor told they GW2 is directed towards casuals. That was always the playerbase’s opinion. Of course after 3 years into this game people might think it is for casuals. Still you can’t blame the developer for that.

Eternity vs sunrise

I had Sunrise for about 3 years and later Eternity for 1 year now. The effects on Eternity are stronger:

- the sword and your character have a faint firey aura
- footfall effects are a lot more prominent

For reference check the wiki: https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Eternity

Please note that during night and nighttime dungeons you will have the Twilight skin with similar effects and same footfall effects: https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Twilight

I just don’t get why the collection side of things apparently takes so long. Like design a few icons, go to an existing NPC or take part in an existing event..like..there was nothing legendary about this journey at all. It was just pointless port and fetch. Then a hideous crafting sink like always…. When you see what some other devs do in similar time frames with much less manpower, makes you wonder wtf these 300 people do day in day out.

I second that concern.

ProtoGunner.4953

Introduce gliders you can get actually from in game. There are only 3 gliders you get regularly: the standard and the two from legendary backpacks.

There are now about 20-30 glinder skins and none others are available as an in game reward. For example, there are missed opportunities like the Soul River would have perfectly fit as a reward from Gorseval. It shows that this guy did this boss and it is a great incentive to do those bosses. I really liked that in WoW. Just do not monetize that much, I mean 2!!

Man, guys get grip and put some additional glider skins, I am sure in the end you profit more than just kittenting out a new buyable glider skins every two weeks.

The only popularity it gained was back in 2012 through Angry Joe’s review. And that is fading constantly.

I only can see if a new race can’t use old armor skins. Otherwise it is a huge effort to implement it. Also, it’s just flavour and ‘wasted’ content. If they introduce a new race they have to do it in a different way. Story wise it would take place after the events of Zhaitan and Mordremoth.

It’s still too little content. You can’t deny that. Anyone who states otherwise is just whiteknighting this fact. However, I enjoyed the content I played and I well played a couple of 100 hours out of it. But that’s it, there’s not much else to do. No dungeons, only one raid (which is great imo). Also they sold fractals as the new 5man content without adding one single fractals in almost one year after expansion… Even small companies who do FTP games add more dungeons. Of course they are simple but Anet tends to produce either an over fancied complex thing or nothing. Why not just give people what they want? They don’t have to re-invent the wheel. Just give us meaty dungeons with a lot of hard hitting mobs and a few bosses (and some unique rewards) and I am happy. I still love the old dungeons and do them quite often.

No, it’s a fact that this expansion is small and has little content, and there is no excuse for it. They rushed it (imagine HOT was first planned as free ‘seasoned’ content) and the pricing was bad and that’s why it wasn’t up to their expectations, it’s that simple. Spoiler: Why did ANet kill...

in Living World

Posted by: ProtoGunner.4953

ProtoGunner.4953

It’s the ‘Game of Thrones Effect’ how I call it. Since killing off key characters is dramatic and I noticed in many shows that after GoT had this much success, many shows do it. It’s ‘in’. Also, GW2 got criticized by a lot of players to be too childish/Disney-like, harmless events and no one dies you love (well unless you loved Tybalt…).

The difference is that when they do it in those popular television properties those sudden deaths have context and meaning. They’re not just random offing of characters. They usually serve as the end of an important plot arc, a logical conclusion of a long held grudge, or a way to establish a relationship and grow other characters.

Eir’s death serves only as a character development lever for braham, but the WAY in which she died was so inappropriate in context and execution that it fell flat. It was obvious that she died because the plot needed her to, not because there was any compelling story arc that led to her death.

A sudden character death can be effective when done correctly. Since you mention Game of Thrones, all of the sudden deaths in that series served as critical plot points. I don’t want to spoil the show for anyone, but if you look back on those deaths they all make sense and are usually big payoffs for the overall narrative structure.

Eir’s death did not mark the end of any plot arc, or the beginning of any other plot arc. It was not a narrative payoff. It was just sort of tossed in in the middle of an existing arc in an effort to help develop an underdeveloped character, and in the end that character, Braham, was not significantly effected enough by it for it to have any gravity at all anyway.

Contrast that with Traherne’s death. Traherne’s death had meaning, it was a logic end to a plot arc, and it served a purpose. It was belivable that he died, it was impactful for the world around him, and it was a death fitting of both the charactar and the story. The same goes for your order mentor, Scarlet Briar, several major release villains, and a host of other GW2 characters that have died.

Stein and company CAN do better. They HAVE done better. In this case they simply dropped the ball, likely due to an accelarated development schedule or limited resources to turn the writing in to playable reality.

+1
You mention a lot of good points. I may not have seen all the GoT seasons, but I have read the books and even I can admit that all deaths did have purpose, context, and meaning, even the grisly ones.

Guess I will have to continue the HoT Living Story to see for myself if Braham changes at all. I haven’t really paid any attention to these new characters so far because they really don’t intrigue me in any way…

Absolutely agree. They tried hard in GW2. It’s typical game story telling imo: mostly not so good. If you want good story, play ‘The Last of Us’ or ‘Mass Effect’ (1+2).

Did HoT ruin GW2?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: ProtoGunner.4953

ProtoGunner.4953

Proto – agreed on HoT needing more maps for it’s price. Both in open PvE (not guild halls), and spvp. Insuficient amount of content is the cause of both players not grabbing as many copies as was expected, and of this over the top grind that many point out.

Disagreed on not wanting complex maps – this is Guild Wars game. More then other games of its gendre this one is about players overcoming challenges with their grit and skill, and not just getting everything handed to them. The new challenge of exploring and mastering this beuatiful, fullly 3D maps is a joy i don’t get to experience much elsewhere. I do not wish to see GW2 return to generic flat map model of every other game out there. Especially now that we have gliders begging to be used and abused;)

I like the complex map, but most people don’t. Just read the forums. We are in a very casual era of gaming where people like to play 30mins and go off again.

The solution is somewhere in the middle: you have to offer complex maps with meta large meta events but also easy accessible maps.

@vayne, I think they pretty much failed with Draenor (first expansion I never played), but it used to be much better with constant stream of content. And yeah: 12€/month is quite a lot, I agree but then again, I bought gems in the 4 digits amount and so did others. I don’t think their revenue is worse than in subscription based games.

ProtoGunner.4953

What I don’t get is why they didn’t lower the price in any way after almost 9 months… 50 is too high for such little content. We haven’t seen anything than four maps soon one year into the expansion – that’s just embarrassing given the fact there a mere 4 maps.

Not to pick on your wording but there really are more than four maps as far as content design and time went. Two guild hall maps each took time to create and some people do love their guild halls. I’m one of them.

Desert borderland maps is a map. It’s not in the game right now but it will be coming back in one form or another. That’s also another map.

And the new PvP map, that’s a map too.

It’s four open world PvE maps, some of the most complex in the game. It’s very different than saying four maps is pathetic.

Sometimes I think people aren’t looking at the amount of work that went into the expansion as a whole.

I don’t speak about quality and the fact that those maps are rather complex. They are of course. But still, it is just too few content. In WoW you get 2 raids, 8 dungeons and about 7-8 maps to explore, and 2-3 months later there is another 1-2 dungeons, a new map and 1 new raid. I mean it’s so much more content it really hurts.

What I don’t get is why don’t they do what people want? Just push out more maps, make them simpler, people don’t like fancy and gimmicky stuff as they had to realize when Aetherpath failed. Anet always has this dream of re-inventing the wheel and fail at the people’s expectations. It is a noble intention, indeed, but at the end you have to deliver.

Nevermore- Worth It

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: ProtoGunner.4953

ProtoGunner.4953

When I signed up for this game almost 6 months ago, I struggled to understand the concept of legendary weapons. Why would anyone put forth all that effort (not to mention the expense!) for a fancy skin? It doesn’t even offer a statistical advantage of any kind (My WoW-brain basically imploded when I heard this.)!

Fast-forward many many hours of GW2 play time and I’m getting close to completing my first legendary (Quip! See? It even matters enough to have a name!). Why would I put myself through this?

Well, it turns out that I met some good people here to go along with some pretty solid gameplay. At that point I found that I actually wanted a reason to continue spending time here. That is simultaneously why I get frustrated with the content drought, why I craft legendaries, and also, I think, why some people have a hard time leaving these games when they no longer enjoy them.

Of course I have the option of not playing if I can’t find a reason to play (i.e. lack of content). But I wouldn’t say that I don’t enjoy the game. I just find myself unmotivated to play it without a meaningful (to me) objective, if you see the distinction.

That’s what I was missing when I first encountered the concept of legendary weapons. The quest for a legendary weapon isn’t just about the skin or the bragging rights. It provides the motivation to play the game.

A game can be great, but if it doesn’t offer something new and of interest to you, sooner or later it becomes a good game that you no longer play.

Do you really blame people for sticking around to complain about a game like that? It’s a shame, you know. Great game. Just wish I wanted to play it. If legendary crafting is anything, it’s a lengthy goal to pursue that fills that “motivation gap” nicely for players who are otherwise inclined to enjoy GW2. So it was for me, and I doubt this will be my last legendary.

Very good post. You cover my opinion 100%!

I have no money issue, it’s okay to charge for one pack with expansion, that’s pretty normal. In WoW new players won’t pay for most old expansions, too. Don’t know what’s all the fuzz about.

But I must admit that 50€$ is extremely high priced for such a small expansion. Only four maps, no single dungeon, one raid on the PvE side. No, that’s really thin. And now 8-9 months into the ‘expansion cycle’ we don’t have any additional stuff like new maps etc. I hope they’ll do it better with the next expansion and with a reasonable price tag.

Here’s what we believe: If someone wants to play for a thousand hours to get an item that is so rare that other players can’t realistically acquire it, that rare item should be differentiated by its visual appearance and rarity alone, not by being more powerful than everything else in the game. Otherwise, your MMO becomes all about grinding to get the best gear. We don’t make grindy games — we leave the grind to other MMOs.

Axemaster hate

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

ProtoGunner.4953

Got in a lucky T4 map. Axemaster downed!

…Never doing it again.

Said it before in another thread, but this isn’t how players should be looking at your content, ANet.

Just bow to the system and don’t act like a young revolutionist who is rejecting the system. It is how it is and if you wanna kill some bosses on a regular basis you need to organize. Finding a group in LFG isn’t a big deal.

If you are expecting the that the whole open world has to be accessible for everyone – single or group, party, squad then this is your opinion. They offer enough content for everyone. Why not a few bosses.

Rolling over for bad game design is how we get to accept messes like Heart of Thorns in the first place. (Or WoW’s later expansions…)

I don’t mind needing a group for world bosses. If people are actually going to do them. The only reason Axemaster gets done is because, sometimes, an organized team goes looking for a T4 victory.
That would mean something if T4 gave anything decent in comparison to other tiers. There is very little incentive for most maps to break off their Matriarch fetish to do anything else.

The “group” and “LFG” chants are a little old, honestly. It’s not some magical way to suddenly make people appear, and the other consequence is waiting. Not to drag out the desiccated corpsemummy that is the Manifesto, but we’re not supposed to wait to have fun anymore, right? Sticking around for a few minutes (<5?) while a group forms is okay, but if that group never forms, that’s wasted time. I’ve done enough of that for Triple Trouble (which is more content I’m not doing again). For the time I could be investing, Silverwastes or Auric Basin or Shatterer/Tequatl offer me much more ready and rewarding experiences.

The manifesto is a 6 year old remnant of eager times when they didn’t structure the whole game…. people should understand this.

You are right that the system as it is now, isn’t ideal, but you have to accept it. They hardly won’t/can’t change it. But I think they learned from it (at least they told that in several posts) and we can expect maps and their events with less instance hopping.

Not really hard. And level 11 is a cakewalk. Usually takes 10-15mins and zero to one wipes. Learn the mechanics and don’t complain as always in this forum.

Legendary is grind, it’s intended to be grind. It is not better than an ascended stat wise. It’s only a skin. From this perspective no it’s not worth it. I already did Astralaria and now finishing collection Nevermore III. If you don’t want to grind, don’t make it. It’s a vanity item you don’t need.

If you have the nuhoch stealth mastery and you are 5-10 players it’s easy. He actually never can use his AoE down skill if he gets CC’d and that happens fast, if you are on a dedicated T4 map.

Coordinated map is a wistful dream, in most cases. I can spam map chat begging for Axemaster help, and most people won’t even show up. The 3 or 4 who do get whacked almost immediately, give up, and don’t bother showing up anymore.

When that’s the result, it reeks of bad design to me.

Dude, ever heard of LFG-Tool? There are now even dedicated LFGs for the HOT maps… Usually always one huge train of players doing T4.

A Personal Opinion and Rant

Holy, dude… take a chill pill. You could have invested your time instead of writing this to a raid boss and mastering your class. It’s not that hard and if you don’t like it, don’t do it. There’s enough content for everyone. You talk about hard content like it is the worst thing and overdramatize like it is the end of the world.

I tell you my story. I play Guild Wars since 2006, right before the Faction expansion. Open world was always been ‘nice to have’ and I always complained there’s no hard raid content. Since HOT, I appreciate the harder content, I appreciate the HOT maps, the raids and the higher fractals.

There are as many opinions as people are out there (and here: playing this game). And the idea behind an MMO is to attract as many people as possible by offering as much as possible content. There is content for casuals like you: open world faceroll crap, and content for me: raids and fractals.

People ultimately shall not see everything from their narrow perspective. You can’t satisfy every need. This is life, adapt or go under.

Instead of complaining learn the maps. You get used to it after a couple of hours/days there. The minimap isn’t much of help, true. They could make them better.
