Lore Q&A

Randulf.7614

For feedback for the future, I would say that plotlines and threads that encompass areas outside the jungle or main thread would have been something I’d have loved to have played through (and genuinely thought we were getting something that sweeping in scale rather than feeling like we had played Act One).
It also felt less logical to charge headlong into the jungle the way we did for the sake of 3 captives. I say this after re-playing the Battle for Fort Trinity, where dozens of Pact soldiers were sacrificed for the greater good to keep the risen out whilst the gates were being closed, knowing that any risen pact soldiers would risk giving inside information to Zhaitan.

Expansions set a bar for a wider sort of narrative and storytelling and I hope to see a much less narrow focus for the next expacs going forwward. The lore/story team have set seeds for some great potential storylines and branching outwards can only ever be beneficial and gainful for anyone who loves playing story modes.

Prophecies is a pretty good example of how your team can do it well. Many stories are covered in that journey and players have fond memories and yearnings for many things that appeared in that campaign (Mursaat, White Mantle, the fall of Ascalon, The Forgotten, Ascension, The Seer, Glint and the Prophecies, the Dwarven civil War, Titans, The Scepter of Orr, etc etc)

That’s the feedback for what I personally hope for in the direction of storytelling in future expacs anyway.

I’m not sure what WoW has to do with any of this, but I’m curious: Where are you getting this information from?

It was mentioned in the AMA by the Anet Devs.

It’s also close to the same stat mentioned by other MMO companies for their games and have used it to show why development for raids was severely cut in their franchises.

Those champions are still active in all the blazeridge sites (i forget if there are 2 or 3). Now the 3rd round of events have begun, people are often camped nearby since they spawn on the same site, just on different timers.

I just whizzed through Maelstrom and saw a few people doing a leyline and champ event there as well

Obviously off peak hours you will struggle to find players, but nothng has been deactivated. Like the new bandit quests, there are still enough players doing them to keep them alive.

There was a dev comment on it. Possibly on reddit. It was non-committal, but a story mode was not ruled out entirely. No mention of a solo mode though.

From what I can tell, there is a misconception of how much story and lore there is in the raid. Most of it goes onto the wiki if you want to read more. Most of the info I know came from there and reading the lore forums when they discuss stuff.

There are a myriad of caves in TD that noone ever has a reason to go to unless you’re doing Map Completion. There’s a whole underwater cave system you never have a reason to go to unless you’re doing world completion. It’s quite sad. There could be side story and lore snippets shoe-horned into these locations to make them feel more worthwhile, but there’s not..

100% agree with this. HoT overall was too narrow focussed and it suffered for it. I’d love to have more side events and TD especially need its the most.

What bothers me about the post-release maps

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Randulf.7614

Randulf.7614

Just as an example of the things that make people leave due to lack of WP: You are fighting the Vinewrath. You go down. Your choices are abandon the fight completely or lay there and hope someone helps. Without a waypoint, once you go down in that fight you are out of it. The time needed to walk back is too long. And that is the kind of things that makes people give up on the Silverwastes map.

I understand where you are coming from, but having just left SW after a successful run, I’m not seeing how after 2 years this has become an issue. I have yet to see in the last few months, an unsuccessful Vinewrath run or a map which hasn’t been able to pull enough people together. If the wp distances were an issue, VW would be failing a lot from lack of players, but it isn’t happening.

Tangled Depths is the only map I have seen where WPs are a problem for players, but it’s because they haven’t adapted to the use of Nuhoch Wallows and/or the map is confusing in layout for many.

This is the lair of an Elder Dragon, with no real Pact set up like in Orr. Currently we have a WP network which is sparser in most maps (albeit one which is absolutely spot on in my opinion) and creates a greater sense of danger and feeling like the jungle is against you. This aspect is excellent map design.

I agree with your game 101 design about save points, but it isn’t applicable here, due to the tactically well spaced waypoints (ie at every major encampment or event hub). If Auric had one at the start and one in the mid and nothing else, you’d be spot on, but having one at each compass point and being 1-2 mins run from each other doesn’t create an issue.

Just wondering

In game not directly, no. But, if someone did that, the chat would be logged and if someone reported them, it would be very clear to a support agent that griefing was taking place and action could be taken.

Also, in Auric, the gain would be nothing. The chances of someone turning up just to grief and not to get loot are fortunately remote in this game

Tyrian Masteries: progress bar

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Randulf.7614

Randulf.7614

- You can’t reset a mastery bar. Any xp in it saves when you switch to another line.
- A full mastery bar stays full until you spend points to unlock it and move to the next tier. . . . .

Yes, I have already spent points in the Commander (4 tiers done) and Fractals (1 tier complete) lines. I am working on the third tier of “Legendary”, with one point spent and five still needed. I might also want to change to the Fractals line, where I would need just one more point to complete the second tier, but it gives me no option to switch to that line either.

Hovering on the progress bar shows “3,810,000/3,810,000 experience”. It has been that way for at least two weeks. Don’t you think it would be nice to know how much more than that I have done in that time? I play at least an hour a day, often more than 3 hrs. During those two or more weeks I have killed many Champions, completed more than five Map Zones, as well as JPs, dungeons, a fractal and sundry Achievements.

WHY, ArenaNet, WHY does this progress bar not shift back to the left side and start refilling again the way that Every Other Progress Bar Does? In PvP, WvW, and <L80 PvE, (as well as most MMORPGs I kknow of) progress bars slowly fill with the ‘good’ color from left to right, and when the far right end is met, it goes ‘empty’ and starts filling again. Like the opposite of the fuel gauge in a vehicle.
What sense does it make that this progress bar gets stuck at the far right?

It might be worth showing screenshots, since what you are describing as I understand it, doesn’t make sense.

The 3,810,000 will stay there at the far right until you earn the points from other sources, then unlock it as you have done with other tiers.

You can switch to any other line at any time via the mastery menu, where it will default to the earliest tier you have reached.

If none of the above is applicable, I don’t know what advice can be given until seeing your UI for further clarification

What bothers me about the post-release maps

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Randulf.7614

Randulf.7614

I disagree, I think it is better game design to have sparser, more tactical wp placement. Core Tyria is overburdened with wps. There are far too many in each map, some a few feet from one another, with no mobs in between.

Southson, Dry Top, Silverwastes and Maguuma are where the devs have realised that and to up the challenge, encourage exploration and make players less reliant on dying/wping quickly back, they have chosen to reduce the wps. It’s a direction I am massively in favour of.

VB is pretty much spot on – really well placed waypoint system covering the key camps, with a good mix of using uprafts and nuhoch wallows to get around quickly

Auric’s design means you are always close enough to a waypoint, again perfect

TD is different entirely and barely relies on waypoints at all. Instead it utlises Nuhoch Wallows for quick travel, meaning the mastery has value – something many masteries severely lack.

Dragon Stand has a waypoint for each segment in the meta. Which again, is spot on.

Silverwastes’s problem is not necessarily a lack of waypoints, rather the oft contested one to the south and the oft closed skritt tunnels. Interesting game mechanics when SW first released, but less conducive to organic map flow now it’s an older map.

Need help with Mastery Exp and Hero Points

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Randulf.7614

Randulf.7614

HoT exp can be extremely quick – you just need to do events and especially big meta events. Hero point and event trains do exist in Maguuma, esp Auric Basin. Dragon Stand meta is prob the best xp, but you need to taxi into an active map when it starts and you need to get there (it’s the final map)

Hero points have 3 ways to acquire:
- Maguuma (10 per point and there are hero point trains constantly running usually)
- Core Tyria (1 per point)
- WvW – You can use the new extra currency to buy a hero point from maguuma or core tyria for their appropriate value

In core tyria, there are also event trains, usually they are the old champ trains. Look at the current weekly map rewards and you can guess where people will be. For example, last week Frostgorge was packed due to Powerful Blood, CHarged Stones and Giants Eyes for event rewards. CUrsed Shore is usually always going regardless of rewards

Tyrian Masteries: progress bar

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Randulf.7614

Randulf.7614

I am also confused about what you are saying. I’ll try some ideas and see if they apply.

- You can’t reset a mastery bar. Any xp in it saves when you switch to another line.

- A full mastery bar stays full until you spend points to unlock it and move to the next tier. You cannot move tiers until you spend points. Perhaps the commander and fractal lines are waiting points spent? The number “32” should indicate points you have spent from your accumulated pool. Those are gained from acheivements and collections.

- If you press H and go to masteries, next to the central tyria red symbol is how many points you have to spent
If you select the mastery line you are on, it shows how many points needed to unlock when the xp bar fills completely. Each tier needs progressively more mastery points to unlock and move down a tier.

You may know all this already, but thought I’d try

The picture was under the masteries section of the HoT website since just before the expac launched.

Whether it is one 3-headed dragon, or an attack by three large champion dragons is unclear. It is however, extremely cool and I hope it it wasn’t a random piece of concept artwork they put up there, but some kind of long term teaser.

PVE not competitive enough.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Randulf.7614

Randulf.7614

Pve players do not approach pve with a competitive mindset, hence why attempts to make pve competitive generally fail or fall to the wayside in open world MMO’s.

Players play to explore, loot, farm, do story, tick off personal achievements. Extremely few care about being better than others in that environment. WvW and pvp caters for the competitive scene.

Look at the fuss caused by many about the difficulty of the ai in HoT and how jumping/platforming is too challeneging for many. Could you imagine the backlash against competitivity being introduced?

Choose a Name for Tyria’s Heroes!

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Randulf.7614

The problem with calling them Destiny’s Edge is they’re not Destiny’s Edge and that guild may still exist. It’s a bit uncertain after HoT, but not to the point where it would be ok for a bunch of kids to come along and appropriate the name.

Except they haven’t appropriated the name, they would have joined it and carried on its legacy – as any good Guild would allow. Rytlock is still part of it and whether Anet acknowledges it or not, Caithe, Zojja and Logan are still part of the dynamic. It also allows Destiny’s Edge to continue to grow well beyond a small group into something bigger and longer lasting.

I always thought of them as two entirely separate groups that occasionally ran into each other rather than one big group. Really the only things they have in common are working with us and ending up fighting a dragon.

But even then Destiny’s Edge set out to fight the dragons deliberately. This new group got drawn into it. They didn’t know any more about what was going on than we did, which means they didn’t originally know one person was behind everything that happened in Season 1 and until Season 2 didn’t know it had anything to do with a dragon.

They do have more in common, since some have relationships to other DE members. Such as Taimi to Zojja and Braham to Eir. Plus Rytlock and and whom I am assuming is his little sister.

Plus I think we were added to DE as the player character. I could be wrong there though.

None of them are particularly appropriate and to see any correlation to GoT is a bit sad (I don’t find it good fantasy, but even so they’re still poor names).

Destiny’s Edge, whilst perhaps not the greatest name, is the name it should keep (in my opinion). We still have all the original members around and we have recruited a bunch more – precisely how a Guild operates. It is better for the lore, the game and consistency in general to keep Destiny’s Edge as the name for the group and any future members that are added.

Irrelevant though, since the deadline for voting is so close to LS3 release, the VA is probably done for all 3 situations, so I went with Dragon’s Watch, since it at least includes Dragons in the name…

HoT PVE: Worth it?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Randulf.7614

1) To me yes. And the changes mean you can now pick up and play at your leisure and still be rewarded. Except maybe Dragon STand map. That you need to get into a populated map and hang through for at least an hour-90 mins to get the whole chain done. The other maps you can achieve stuff w/o necs having run through to the final boss. The maps are different though. They are larger due to the verticality and at first very maze like and unusual to navigate. They reward exploring, but many have been daunted by their intricacies. I’m not one of them, but I do understand those who hate them.

2) It’s grindy to get stuff. It’s been reduced a lot with the more recent patch and vendor items are much easier to get with tokens. Making a legendary precursor is a mix of heavy farming and in some cases, really good fun quasi-quest like collections

3) Mostly mechanics. DOn’t stand and tank n spank certain mobs or groups of mobs and generally it’s fine. Not every fight is winnable, but it will make you use your class a lot more than core Tyria does.

4) I don’t raid as the lfg requirements tend to be very strict as to what they want. Guilds tend to be more forgiving, so I would advise joining a friendly one if you intend to raid.

5) Open world not so much, it does require you to know how to play your class, but that’s it. Pretty much any build can work, but you may have to be a bit adaptable at times. There are no open world build requirements, but raids I am informed are very specific.

HoT open world is rarely more difficult than when pre-nerf Orr or Southson. Mechanics wise, you will have had a preview from Silverwastes, but they generally hit hard, but have lower health pools to compensate. Probably the biggest barrier are the hero points to progress your elite specs, many of which are guarded by hard hitting champs. However, the maps are generally populated by enough people to be able to get past these.

Cantha or Elona in GW2?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Randulf.7614

I would love to see one or both in the GW2 art style, however I doubt either will ever appear. I remain unconvinced once mainland Tyria is fully open, the game can sustain populated maps across 2-3 continents, considering how many maps rely or encourage mass team up.

Very happy to be proved wrong though.

They could do it if they lower the requirements after the Zerg has moved on. Make the old map meta events completeable by a handful rather than the current numbers.

Of course this will lead to endless posts about how the game is dying because people wont understand that more maps can mean less players per map.

They could and they could also re-design map events entirely. Viable in theory. However, this just adds to their workload as well as what you pointed out.

Like I said, I hope I’m wrong, but the game doesn’t feel set up to expand in that way. Guess that is the nature of trying to keep all content relevant, which is a big plus for the game, but could also have drawbacks down the line if we can’t expand because of it.

The option for CD and Digital music was not offered.

I believe you’ll find that CD was offered. I looked for it and that’s what I voted for, so I’m nearly 100% certain that was one option.

Think they mean CD + digital as a combined option, in the same way vinyl and digital (i think) was an option. I suspect it wasn’t offered since it easier to convert cds to digital for most people than it is vinyl
