I think a memorial decoration / option is a neat idea, but as we don’t have a memorial for people yet, perhaps it should be generic, or at least have a people version first.

I don’t understand how you say “Make them the same, and then do something to separate them.” Unless you have a particularly good replacement idea for keeping them distinct, I feel like it’s overlooking possible reasons for the distinctions you want to erase in the first place.

I main an Ele, and I’ve used the Elementals a lot since launch. In my opinion, they’re perfectly fine the way they are. They’re useful (especially Rocky,) and they don’t die easily. (ESPECIALLY ROCKY.) No buffs, nerfs, or other changes needed that I can see.

Is this game raid centric now?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Redenaz.8631

We haven’t had much in the way of new PvE or story-based releases since Heart of Thorns, other than Raids, so Raids naturally get a lot of the hype. That can be really frustrating for people who don’t raid, when it looks like that’s all the development team is doing.

There have been some small additions recently (see Current Events achievements for Leyline events and Bandit events,) but the rest of use are hanging out a bit until Living Story Season 3 kicks off, probably sometime late summer or early fall, at a guess. They did revamp a lot of HoT maps to make them less of a grind back in April, so that’s helping to reinvigorate people’s interest in HoT maps.

While no one knows for sure, and this might just be my gut feeling, the odds seem very good. The old school Halloween weapons were a pretty unusual case, so I wouldn’t use them as a relevant predecessor.

At the same time, I wouldn’t necessarily start stockpiling materials, because things like Wintersday drinks are going to be rather expensive right now, anyway.

A thought of faction

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Redenaz.8631

Focusing on the OP’s suggestions, Anet made a conscious decision to keep player characters heroic, without any real “dark side” paths to take. If you join the Flame Legion, or whatever, that’s going to turn your relationship with most of the other characters in the game sideways in very severe ways. For example, if you’re a member of the Nightmare Court, you wouldn’t be allowed in the Grove anymore, which would be inconvenient, and you couldn’t sensibly do LS2, since the summit is held in the Grove.

Working around that would require either a ton of work, or a lot of “SSHH, you’re really a bad guy, but everyone treats you like a good guy because they don’t know, wink wink.” That kind of free path-choosing works in some games, but it’s just not part of GW2’s design.

Make World Bosses Great Again 2016

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Redenaz.8631

Redenaz.8631

I think World Bosses are generally in a good place right now. You can complain about lazy leachers who make the fight take longer, but it’s not like Shadow Behemoth or Mega Destroyer take ages and ages because the zerg doesn’t collectively do everything they can.

Some people do world bosses because it’s relaxing. If you can’t play with those people without fretting about how they’re slowing you down, do a more challenging boss fight, do Silverwastes, HoT, Triple Trouble, or even the new Shatterer. I wouldn’t mind the occasional touch-up, but let’s not act like any of the current world bosses are as lame and tedious as old Shatterer was.

This is not a scenario where we have to worry about “equal pay for equal work.” Relax and enjoy it, or go do the content you do enjoy. These are fine the way they are, even if it means I have to spend a longer time behind Shadow Behemoth because I don’t have everyone running through. It’s not a big deal to me, personally.

Expansion - Hard to obtain equipment variety

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Why is Eternity mentioned as “currently the only one of its kind?” It’s the third (or second-and-a-half) legendary greatsword.

People would certainly like more legendary weapons, which is why H.O.P.E., Nevermore, Astralaria, and the new shortbow were meant to be part of a new set of legendaries to get rolled out as part of Heart of Thorns. Regardless, the project was eventually deemed a poor use of development resources, so the other legendaries are indefinitely suspended.

As for armor, I think people would just like more armor skins, regardless of whether it’s ascended. Take Leystone armor—If it had been ascended, it would have to be substantially more difficult to acquire, and I’d have maybe one set instead of a full collection.

Letting Events Fail in PvE

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Redenaz.8631

Redenaz.8631

There’s really no situation where failing an event should be preferable to succeeding it, short of a general “I want to see what happens” curiosity. Otherwise, you get players fighting each other.

Unfortunately, event chains do occasionally lead to situations like that, whether it’s by giving out better loot in an event further down the chain or by requiring a particular event for a precursor scavenger hunt. The former is just a balancing oversight, and the latter is something Anet has tried to improve since they initially did precursor collections. I don’t know how many “required to fail” cases are still out there, but I think everyone can agree that those situations are trouble.

Making something better isn’t the same as fixing it. You can almost always make something better, if you have the time and resources to spend on it.

Your suggestion might be more helpful if you say some of the specific improvements you’d like to see. They can be fairly broad or very detailed, but “character customization” is a huge area. It can range from customizing your character’s body, to your skill/trait selection, to things like dye and armor skins.

I’m totally okay with combat slowdown. If you want to dash through a group of enemies, use a shield, use stealth, use a teleport, use your head to avoid the fight in the first place.

If you want me to take extra damage because I hit a key to exit slow combat movement when it occurs, sounds good to me.

This wouldn’t fix anything. If I switch to non-combat speed, I can outrun a centaur, so I’m not going to be taking enough damage to make it a deterrent.

What are some specific examples of rewards that you have in mind?

I keep thinking about The Ascension and Legendaries, and I can’t seriously believe their mode requirements are a major factor in whether someone starts playing GW2, or converts from a free account to a paid account. That would be a surprising market niche, of people who will quit early on (or refuse to start) if they can’t get some specific, high-grade items, but also aren’t willing to play anything other than PvE.

Want more players?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Redenaz.8631

Redenaz.8631

You’re framing it as a growth/expansion target (recruit more retirement-age people,) but it seems to me the only rewards that require PvP and WvW are generally high-end rewards that are mostly of interest to people who are already in the game. If I’m looking for a game to get into, regardless of my age, I’m not going to hear that The Ascension requires me to PvP and get turned off of GW2 because of it. I’m not going to be aware of The Ascension, period, and I’ll make my decision based on art style, gameplay, and whether I hear the game is enjoyable.

If I don’t like PvP, I’m not going to get into an exclusively PvP game like Overwatch or League of Legends, but unless the mere existence of a PvP / esports scene is a turn off for me, I don’t see why I’m going to be worrying about high end rewards needing PvP/WvW, when I don’t even play the game yet. If Anet really wanted to go out of their way to court that market segment, targeted advertising would accomplish more than worrying about which game modes get which rewards.

Just my two cents.

There are people who collect legendaries, and I’ve never felt like they’re “more successful” at GW2 than I am, because I don’t measure how successful my time in game is by how many legendaries I (don’t) have. Those people play differently than I do, and I probably wouldn’t enjoy playing their way.

I’m just here to have a good time. I’m not competing with anyone, unless I’m competing with myself. When/if I get around to building a legendary, it will feel like an accomplishment because of what I had to do for it, and how it represents a capstone over my previous weapons, not because other people don’t have one.

More cultural armors?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Redenaz.8631

Redenaz.8631

Technically speaking every armor set is 15 different sets, because each race gets a different alterations anyways. It’s less forceful on the creativity department, but they still can’t just use the human armor on charr, asura, or norn.

Technically, but I’m not sure the level of work involved in refitting armor for a race even approaches the level of work in making new design for another race. I’m rounding down, but it would be preposterous to round up on that score.

They’re also more highly desired, making it more worth making because higher demand for it.

Players really want more armor sets in general. With race-neutral sets, they can use them as a the carrot for multiple situations (Bladed for Verdant Brink, Leystone for Dragon’s Stand, etc.) rather than just one situation that pays out differently based on your race. Armor skins are both one of the most expensive prizes to create and the most desired by players, so it makes sense to get as much mileage out of each set as possible.

Again, I like racial armor, and I’m glad we have the sets we do, but if they introduce “another Sylvari-themed set,” for example, I expect it to be wearable by all races.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Redenaz.8631

Much as I like cultural armor, I don’t want additional sets of it. They’re a huge undertaking (3 tiers * 5 races = 15 armor sets ) for relatively little payoff. That’s 15 new armor sets, but any given character only gets one new option, as opposed to getting 5 new options for a character.

The math just doesn’t make sense. I’m glad they’re in the game, but they’re not an efficient use of resources.

Are you asking for greataxe as a hammer skin, for use with hammer skills, or as its own weapon type? It might work really well as a hammer skin.

If the latter, would it be better to add greataxes, or to keep opening up existing weapon types to new classes? Greataxes are cool, but all of their skins would have to be created from scratch, while any existing weapon benefits from a large back-catalog of skins.

Those skins are from weapon sets intended to match weapons created by class skills.

Purple ones are Phantasm skills, so they only include Mesmer weapons that match skills like Phantasmal Duelist

Blue ones are Spirit Weapons, matching those created by skills like Bow of Truth.

Similar to these are Conjured weapons, which match Elementalist skills like Conjure Fiery Greatsword.

All those weapons were created for skills, rather than just as weapon skins, although you can get them as weapon skins using Mystic Coin recipes.

The map I was on managed to get it by cheesing the AI. If the event happens up north (near the ruined wall) there’s a tree in roughly the middle of the event. If you place ley energy in the tree by jumping up on it, you can get a substantial portion of the Inquest to get stuck there. They’ll go after it, because it’s nearby, but they can’t jump up to it, so they just group up at the base of the tree.

It’s a goofy solution, to be sure, but it worked. I’d be more displeased about it, but I do like the events better now that players aren’t competing with each other.

I don’t know if support’s policy about manual moves changed at any point, but it would seem a little strange to me if it was very lenient before. Either way, server linking isn’t intended as some way to nickel-and-dime players who want to be on “Temporary Blackgate 2,” whatever server that happens to be at the moment, so I think it’s a little unfair to cast your unsatisfactory workaround to your problem as them charging you a subscription. I think a lot of people are misunderstanding the scenario. I was halfway through the thread before I figured it out. The OP’s guild is on a full server, so (s)he can’t join them there, but (s)he can join a low-population server that’s linked with them. Since links are only temporary, if the OP wants to play after the next link, that means transferring to another low-population server.

OP, do you have any ideas for a solution to your situation? I’m sure removing population caps is off the table, but would you be satisfied if transfers to low-population servers were free? That might fix your problem, although I wonder if that might cause some other problems of its own, like masses of people doing what you’re doing, causing massive population fluctuations as people keep changing servers to preserve previous links.

No, seriously, I’m asking you to think it out. Do you think Anet is intentionally favoring certain classes over others? Do you think it might just be a temporary ebb and flow of power from one balance patch to the next, because perfect balance is hard? Do you think it might be an issue with what’s popular right now getting the most refinement by player-strategists, or some classes having a higher skill requirement without a corresponding higher power ceiling? Could it be a matter of perspective, and that playing one of these “overpowered” classes might not be so easy as it seems?

Some or none of those might be the answer you’re looking for, but I wonder what answer you’re expecting, besides simple agreement/disagreement.

If you think, “Sweet, I can make this other expensive skin as well!” or “Great, I can make ascended armor for an alt!” do that. If you find yourself thinking, “I already have most of the expensive stuff I want,” then go with the Legendary.

Don’t put too much stock into what you commonly see other players with. Foefire’s Essence might be more appealing if you’re trying to show off for the non-conformist crowd, but you’re going to be looking at it more than anyone else, and many other people won’t notice what weapon you’re using either way.

It may be interesting to note that while gliders are dyable, backpacks aren’t. If they made, say, White Wings dyeable, you’d have a situation where people would have dyed wings while gliding, which would suddenly turn white upon landing.

They could add dyes to back pieces to handle that situation, but I expect that’s a larger task than it sounds, between adding dye channels to skins and updating the UI. Whether you think that’s a good reason for not making wings dyeable or not, there is, at least, another explanation besides “Anet wants to charge for each option.”

I know you want to be the one to “make it,” but if you’re outsourcing half the work already, it’s not like that final step is a substantial amount of prestige.
