Aquabreathers - Why can't I craft one?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Rognik.2579

I’ve found a total of one aquabreather I can craft. It’s a purchasable recipe and only for the heavy class (level 30 or so, I believe, maybe less). It never made that much sense that it had to be purchased from vendors, and only karma vendors at that.

The question is: would tailor’s make light aquabreathes, and would it work just as effectively? They may not have insignias, but having more upgrades wouldn’t be unwelcomed.

Attack Peakitten. Its skill could be slightly mesmery. Razzle dazzle.

The censoring just reminded me why this is unlikely to happen…

If they do, they might have to be peahens, or have the forum censor be less strict. I think there were male peahens in Cantha, so seeing them again would be cool. Not sure if it’d be jungle appropriate, but there’s lots to still see back there.

That said, I’ll be extremely disappointed if there isn’t at least 1 new pet in HoT. My ranger is eager to grow his menagerie, even if it’s just a new drake or spider, say.

New Character Select?

Charr are almost as big as norn, when compared side-by-side, so I don’t feel this out of place.

I don’t know if they will add a new character select screen. I remember way back when GW1 was first released. The characters were all gathered around a campfire, and would step forward when selected. At Cantha’s release, that’s when a new panoramic of the Canthan landscape was revealed. Another reason for the change was that there was only a maximum of 4 characters initially. When Factions included a bonus 2 character slots for accounts with Prophesies, the character select screen had to change.

The way the character screen is currently, there’s a vague, generic background. Behind the character portrait also depicts which part of the world s/he is in. I don’t see the need for a change, unless there will be a mastery achievement tab added.

It is not like lesbians are “males in skirts”…

I never got this impression from Marjory. Yes, she’s not especially girly, but I don’t think of her as “manish”, either. Just look at her relationship with Belinda. She bawled when she found her strangled, and her look in that cut scene when we go back to Fort Salma. How does this not seem feminine to you? Or do you have some other complaint about these characters?

It’s great that we’re getting a new weapon(s), but I’m not too fond of the name changes that seems to come with them or the overall need to “specialize” in the first place. Is the default names of the professions that bad? Bad enough to rename the profession by adding in a new weapon?

The name change indicates something more than just a new weapon. It’s also a change in mechanics that we don’t fully know about. There’ll be new skills, new traits. Not sure what else, but we’ll know more after the deep dive.

It’s frequently the case that seers of the future have some other drawback. The most common way to do that is depicting sight through the third eye by blinding the other two. This might relate back to why the revenants are always blind. Of course, the one disappointment with be the first helmet upgrade will totally remove the blindfold unless there’s some special tweak made for them.

If it was made Character Bound and some of have alts, They might as well take away Character slots forever.

Um… what? I fail to see how it’s really different from unlocking waypoints in the map, or new skills for a new alt, or unlocking new traits in the new system. It can still be done, and some people enjoy doing the same thing over and over again. Hate the proposal, sure, but don’t hyperbolize like this. It’s not the ultimate end-of-the-world idea.

Self Leveling too low, game play suffers!

Rognik.2579

Ooguchi, do you know why the designers made a level-down system for the game? So that even low level zones like Queensdale were a challenge to level 80s like you. I played WoW with a friend briefly, as part of the “free until level 20” deal. After we finally figured out how to talk to each other, he rode his eighty-something character to my starting zone, partied with me, and then proceeded to roflstomp every creature in my way. I wasn’t having fun. I didn’t feel I was doing anything. I felt like a VIP, protected behind an armed bodyguard, Sure, maybe some people like yourself enjoy the run to level 999, but I wanted to learn how my class worked before I got to the tough guys.

Here, the down-leveling mostly fixes that. If your level 80 buddy comes down and parties up with you, he won’t suck up all your XP (so long as you try to fight), he won’t totally pwn that level 10 mob, and you both can still have a lot of fun in the area.

So if that was what you were expecting, to just cleave through the low level content because you’re bigger than everyone, throw that away. Welcome to Guild Wars 2, where we do things differently.

Heavy, medium and light Armor

Light armor classes are the scholars. They aren’t supposed to be hit as much, fighting more from the back row or moving with agility, Heavy armor classes are the soldiers. They are supposed to get into melee and take a hit or two. Armor class isn’t just a cosmetic thing, it determines your play style. Ever play pen-and-paper RPGs like Dungeons and Dragons? The wizard can’t wear plate mail (usually) and has fewer hit points, so he gas to avoid attacks more. Same principle.

ANet may be all about fairness, but it hasn’t quite gone Marxist communist. Some people will inherently have better stuff than you. Find another weakness and exploit it.

Mastery Choices-Illusion or Reality?

Rognik.2579

That was part of my concern as well. Do we know if masteries are a flat progression or do they take more and more time to earn like levels in other MMOs?

My other concern is playing with other people. If they want to spend their mastery points in a totally different way, do our paths have to diverge because I may be spending more points on gliding while my friend is spending them on combat and another in our group was spending them on something else? Even if we get an “All masteries lead to the same destination but there are multiple paths” that is definitely something that could split parties up.

My other hope is that both masteries for the new legendaries and old ones are in the “Original Tyria” mastery track. Content is gated in the x-pac. It isn’t in the base game. IDK, maybe I am wrong and new content int he base game will be gated. Maybe we aren’t getting new content in the base game outside masteries though.

  1. Leveling has always been “flat”. Masteries are just a new leveling reward. Don’t see why that would change.
  2. Unlocking the masteries might be linear, just to be more metroidvania like, or might be totally separate from necessary story progression. Relax, Chicken Little. It was an acorn, not the sky falling.
  3. I’m still holding hope against hope that mastery isn’t expansion locked, If the masteries had only affected HoT, I wouldn’t say boo, But since Mastery points are being added to core maps, it feels like taunting a puppy, I also feel like they haven’t quite committed to saying “no masteries for core-only players.” Maybe I’m deluding myself,

Are the Season 2 rewards really worth it?

Rognik.2579

The dragon attack in chapter 4 was a very dramatic fight, but I was still able to beat it on my first attempt with… minimal problems. I know I had all my gear intact, though possibly damaged.

Strategies on the fight:
#Use ranged weapons. I’ve never fought the jungle tendrils in many, and it seems like a suicide attempt. Stay back so that it’s easier to see where the acid spray is going to land.
#Learn the attack pattern of the dragon while fighting the tendrils. For most of them, there is a sliver somewhere you can stand without getting hit back the big attack. Get in there and keep using your ranged attacks.
#Save your dodges! I didn’t know that you could just jump to avoid the everywhere attack, so I made a point of keeping at least 1 dodge ready for when this attack came, then timed it so I was dodging during the attack. Didn’t always work, but practice made perfect here.
#Heal, heal, heal! You are your own personal healbot, so use that 6 skill at the right time. Trying to tank it won’t work, even for the beefy warriors.

The big question of “are the rewards worth it” is extremely subjective. I’m probably never going to complete Mawdrey, not for lack of want but lack of ability. I’m still gathering up random items used to craft it, and I don’t even have enough clay to make the Clay Pot yet! But for me, story completion was more rewarding than the actual loot I got.

If you are having trouble on this chapter, go on to the next. I never chapter-hopped before finishing the last one, but you can always come back to it without doing the in-between. Go try Chapter 5, see if that’s treating you any better and, when you’re ready, go back to Chapter 4 to beat the Shadow of the Dragon back from the Grove.

I don’t think that is the OP’s problem in this case. Sargento says that s/he gets 3 parts of the circle complete, whereas I could barely get half before the shadow monsters eat it. So I think he knows about the shadow beasts, and if he doesn’t, then he’s been faster moving than I was. The trouble seems to be lining up to get the last flame before it gets extinguished. All I can suggest is keep moving around, have the camera always pointed inwards and watch for that glowy flame circle. I know you can do it, I have faith in you. Defeat that dragon champion!

Having the Time-Out reset be less doesn’t make sense from an in-game perspective. Because you defeated Mordremoth, his minions respawn quicker? No, if anything they should respawn slower. (In-game logic, not player rewards.)

What needs to be done here, though, is have a better reward to do while in Time-Out. Currently, the only thing you can do besides stray quests or just wait is the underground labyrinth, and it sounds like this isn’t that rewarding at all. What sort of reward would people want to be able to find during a time out to make it worth sticking around for? Another legendary boss like the sand giant in Dry Top? Some sort of desert-themed minigame? An area unlocked like the Undergrowth, but with not so many luminaries lurking around ready to eat your face off?

I feel the start of season 2 was a slight misstep. They should have done a little more exposition in the “as you know” vein. Like Marjory or Kasmeer saying, “Good to see you again. I haven’t seen you since Scarlet dropped the Breachmaker in Lion’s Arch harbour.” Or Rox making some offhand comment, comparing it to when you met her in North Nolan Hatchery. Little snippets that tell people who didn’t play Season 1 at all why you care about these people, but subtle enough so as to not totally annoy those who were there. (You know someone is always going to complain.)

I’m also harshest to the first Chapter or two of Season 2, since this was a big format change when they knew they couldn’t really rewind back by Season 1 for a long time. Even if Season 3 started off by doing this kind of infodump, it’s too late since the information was needed to fill in Season 1, not Season 2. People who start playing at the start of Season 3 can go back and catch up on Season 2 by paying gems for it, but there’s currently no in-game way to know how you met Marjory, Kasmeer, Rox, Braham or Taimi. This is what people should be mad about, not having to pay 200 gems/episode.

A Win-Win (A post made from heart and mind)

To be fair to the OP, he also said that he didn’t have a computer at the time that would let him play the game. If it was working, yes, it’s on him. Without having the access method… it gets a little gray. I’m not going to argue about this point, though, and instead hit a point that… hit me the wrong way.

You’re right that Riot did something right, and capitalized on a niche. (I don’t think they were even the first MOBA, with DOTA beating them out, and that was merely a Warcraft 3 hack.) I don’t know how accurate your statement about microtransactions is, or whether you mean annually ($1 billion in a fiscal year) or net (total sum is $1 billion). However, you can’t really compare the products the two companies are selling.

I’ve played League of Legends. A bit. I’m not very good, and the style doesn’t really interest me. Part of this is because it’s the same combat on the same 1-3 maps, doing almost the exact same thing. I know the challenge is in your opponents, and being able to outsmart/outmaneover/outbuild/out-whatever them, but it’s still the same game every time. What changes the company does make is which heroes are available free for the week/month/whatever, new skins, totally new heroes, and mostly game balances and bug fixes. The gameplay part itself is pretty minimal, and self-supporting. You have no attachment to your hero outside of “this is me”, “I like his play style” and “he kills guys dead”.

In contrast, Guild Wars 2 has over 20 maps in PvE alone (and I’m lowballing that) with more added… when plot demands, thousands of different events that can break at the drop of a hat, millions of items that can be collected, skins to collect, gear to equip, minipets, dungeons, bosses… the list goes on. You also have a personal story that is geared to YOU, the player, as you adjust the numerous sliders to get your avatar looking just as you want them, personalizing their back story, building up their legend, progressing through the world, and there are so many little variations thrown in most people miss them. This character is you, or someone you want to be, and you control a lot of their actions. When you get a victory, it feels personal, and not just “oh, time to get a new group and pwn the next nexus…”

LoL and GW2 are apples and oranges. Yes, they’re both fruits, but they’re not even in the same phylum (edit: looked it up. Apples and oranges are in the same phylum, but not the same order. It’s still a biology reference.). Thus, comparing their marketing strategies can’t quite be compared. Is GW2 using the optimal marketing strategy with its gems and cash shop items? Maybe, maybe not. I feel like they’ve done a better job than your average MMO, especially ones that offer pay-to-win gear.

Uh… I don’t know what you’re talking about exactly, but you seem very sarcastic in this post and passively hostile. That’s not the best way to get your message across.

If I understand your complaint properly (and I’m not sure I do), you seem to be complaining about having the living story instances marked by the quest star. Now, I can understand this being annoying going from open world to instance if you accidentally press the wrong button. To be fair, though, there is a confirmation window for those that make certain you can’t accidentally enter it if you click no. I don’t think even pressing F will auto-accept for that.

You seem to be talking about the reverse, though: the green star appearing in instances and getting kicked out to the open world. The only time I’ve seen something like that was when I was in something like the home instance, where I called for an instance but there’s no story going on there. Thus, no monsters are trying to kill me and it’s always right there by the entrance of the instance. There’s also the exit button present in the lower right. I have never seen the green star appear in the middle of the story, nor left an instance accidentally before I wanted to leave (unless I accidentally close the client, but that’s something else entirely).

As for the “no save” function, short of the boss battle levels, the instances are generally short enough that you don’t have to do that much backtracking to catch up. This may be inconvenient if you were just about to finish the instance, but it’s a pretty small gripe to make. It’s not as if you need to restart at level 2 or back in your home city when doing an instance in Orr.

The Living World uses the same system it did for the Personal Story, and that aspect hasn’t really changed since launch. You most likely have done at least some of the personal story by now, or else you got to level 80 without caring about plot and just hacking your way through whatever red creature seemed most difficult. If you haven’t played the personal story at all, I recommend you go back to your race’s home instance and play chapter 1. You might find you actually like it.

The way you phrased your question is kind of like asking, “How many yen are in a pound?” It doesn’t make sense contextually. (Yes, you could make exchange rate arguments, but with a fluxuating market, that’s only good for about 3 minutes.) As people said above, it’s 100 copper to a silver, 100 silver to a gold, and 1000 gold to a platinum (If I remember my GW1 conversion). Ironically, 250 years later our heroes find less money instead of more. Take THAT, inflation!

Interestingly, those are also the metals used in jewelry crafting. I wonder if we could theoretically find mithril or orichalcum coins. (it’d take a lot of farming to get it.)

Mesmer unique illusion icons instead of dots

When I read the OP, I took “dots” to mean the 3 little circles that appear above the Mesmer shatter skills to indicate when you have clones or phantasms summoned. Empty with no clones, and then they fill in purple when you have a clone or phantasm active. And that the suggestion is to change those generic dots to actual icons representing which clones or phantasms are active.

That’s how I interpreted it, too. How other people took it to mean the dots on the mini-map or big map, I’m not sure, which is why I was confused by people talking about ranger pets and necro minions. I just pressed my dodge key and rolled with it.

Cloth nodes - Why not in-game?

Sure, they could have flax nodes that then need to be woven into linen, or the cotton plants into cotton cloth (don’t know what jute is from), but do you want to slaughter rams to harvest wool? Or, if we’re going down this road, why not kill deer to get leather scraps? Or would we need to get skins that then have to be tanned into leather scraps? It seems to just inflate database bloat with an extra crafting step.

There’s more than enough gear dropping from lower areas that can be salvaged for scraps that we don’t /need/ new harvesting nodes or slaughtering animals, but it could certainly be an interesting option.

If you had already completed the map, I don’t think you need to do the new hearts to get 100% map completion. (Correct me if I’m wrong, since my only alt that did 100% made a point of completing the new hearts and unlocking waypoints as soon as they were available.) If they aren’t necessary, they are generally easy to do as they are very near the home city’s portal and don’t take that long to do. Plus, they still give you money and karma for completing them.

[Suggestion] Spawn alts in home instance

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Rognik.2579

Rognik.2579

I think it’d be more practical if only that area-specific alt spawned in that instance; ie. sylvari in Dreamer’s Grove, asura in the Applied Lab, humans in the Selma district, etc. Why my norn would be hanging out with a bunch of asura in Rata Sum seems odd, especially if he hasn’t even unlocked that area on his map. Naturally, this could make programming harder, but I’d prefer it this way as a sort of Easter Egg.

And if we’re making home instance changes, give more of the characters that spawn there dialogue, please! It may be nice to see a quaggan splashing in a fountain, or a certain NPC just hanging out after that story chapter had finished, but if they don’t even comment on the adventure we shared, I might as well just have a trophy case. (Speaking of, trophy case for items earned in personal story? My norn’s busted horn would go well on display somewhere…)

Mesmer unique illusion icons instead of dots

Rognik.2579

I don’t think this is as necessary for necro or ranger. Rangers only have one pet at a time, and if you can’t keep track of her, then you’re a bad pet parent. :p But really, when I play my ranger, I usually have a good idea where my pet is, and look before I activate his specific attack skill. Also, when you swap your pets, the older one just vanishes and the new pet appears pretty close to the ranger.

On necromancers, the minions you can summon are all on the right side of the skill bar. Sure, you might not know who is where, but you know which ones are summoned at a glance, and except for the bone minions, they don’t die after you summon them. Once you start attacking a target, it should be easier to tell where they are and when it’s appropriate to use the skills. The limit of minions is also only restricted by how many you are willing to put on the skill bar.

Mesmers, though, it’s different. The clones or phantasms just have a regular cooldown, and only an indication as to how many you have summoned. If you summon another clone or phantasm, the oldest one just explodes, with no more fanfare than an explosion of butterflies. In the heat of battle, it can be hard to remember which clones you summoned and in which order, which is why I can see having unique icons for each would be helpful.

I don’t know much about the mastery system but 1 thing i really loved when I came back is that now we have mutual bank storage for all characters. This is a perfect example of how we are now able to enjoy the game, rather than switch characters and arrange inventory for hours..

Not sure if I’m misinterpreting your message, but the bank has ALWAYS been shared storage. All the way back in GW1 with the Xunlai banks, a character could easily trade weapons (or armour) they found on one character and give it to another, so long as it wasn’t soulbound. The wallet did change things in that money was now an account pool, rather than needing to be deposited then withdrawn to transfer, and tokens from dungeons and WvW go directly there instead of clogging up an inventory slot.

And again, we don’t know the ins and outs of the mastery system, really. We got a taste of it in the PoI segments, but no clear way in how they start, just how to use active ones. We just need to see how important each mastery is to doing stuff, and how complicated unlocking them would be. For instance, I think learning the language of the races would go better as an account-locked barrier, because as much fun as a cipher may be (my guess on how unknown languages will be presented*), I don’t want to have to code-break them each and every time. Maybe it will be better to keep mastery account-bound, as waypoints and the story will still be character-locked.

*In my head, I imagine the behind the scenes function will be something like a Caesarian code. Set n=random, and you don’t know which of the 25 versions you will land on. Makes it extremely difficult for casual codebreakers to crack it like that.

This is just ….disturbing… female humans already looked 12-17 now you want them even younger? :l

In all seriousness, can we all agree that “more options for character creation” (the true core behind this post) is something that should be debated, and not how deviants view virtual avatars? That’s almost a completely different topic for Dr. Phil.

Yes, but that doesn’t make the arguments any less valid. Sadly, they are accurate. So long as the option exists, it will be corrupted.
[quote;Smooth Penguin.5294]Edit – On a related note, why are some into older characters, yet against younger? One could claim the internet rule on that too.[/quote]
Several reasons. 1) child exploitation 2) old people are of the age of consent 3) It’s not as popular as the opposite end of the spectrum.

what if it wasn’t his choice? caithe overpowered him, and now she’s pregnant. sylvaris lay eggs, and she’s carrying hers everywhere after the zephyrites tried to steal it from her.

as for how she’s pregnant and lays eggs at the same time, it’s complicated.

No, it’s not. This is how sylvari produce quadruplets. First, she waits for her period… of seed growth, then she gets it fertilized. Then a fertilized egg seed goes through mitosis where it creates multiple copies of itself no bigger than pollen. These then get sneezed out her nostrils until they land on an egg-plant (not to be confused with eggplants, which the British call aubergines) . The fertilized egg-plants then morph into seeds, which grow into pods, which then explode in a mess and the spawns then go off to happily murder everything like good like dragon minions.

Mastery Choices-Illusion or Reality?

I feel like masteries are like in wow before you pick a talent tree.

The difference is that you have three choices in wow, and in gw2 you have 1 or you can simply just stick with baseline abilities and never pick up your one talent spec…

Not exactly exciting.

I was envisioning them making eight or five specializations that you could pick from with any profession. This is not so much a nod at gw1 as it is 1/3 of what wow offers.

I hope the rest of the xpac is good…

I think you’re lost. Mastery is the thing that all classes will get in equal measure. The thread talking about specialization, which changes the mechanic or professions, is over there.

What is the "Heart of Thorns"?

I think it’s just a lot of colourful language. Heart refers to the center of the jungle; thorns is a plant-related term that indicates danger, aggression. I don’t think there is a literal heart of thorns, or even that it refers to Mordremoth himself. But if it has to mean something, I’m voting for Mordy.

teal counts as green as far as i’m concerned :P

But it’s a bluish-green. Totally different shade.

I’ll stop now, as I’m not really adding anything to this conversation.

I think it would just splendid if I saw a grandpa Warrior with a cane, that switches to Greatsword stance in combat. Think Yoda in Episode 3. I would also feel the same if I saw a young boy wielding a sword, riding a lion mount in LA. Or a bunch of teenage characters riding the flying broom while carrying stick wands.

I’ll agree that it would be wonderful if we could have that sort of diversity, but let’s face it: some of that would require a lot of codes and flags to make it work the way you describe, and there are better things to spend resources on. While they do have child models for all the playable races (that have a child mode, sorry sylvari), I think lots of people have given good reason why we shouldn’t go that young. Not every player has the discipline you or I do, and it just invites trouble. As I said, either hand wave the differences you want for your RPing, or move it to a non-visual media, because it’s just not going to happen here.

Looks like you might be losing your first debate.

To be fair, the map completion option is pretty new from one of the Feature Packs (either April’s or September’s) and I don’t think it was ever mentioned in the patch notes. That’s why it’s so rarely known. I only learned about it through Aurora Peachy’s video about it.

Not the kodan. Kodan are north and so will be Jormag’s army. Krait and largos, though, certainly. And maybe even some humans or tengu from sunken ships.

Impossible. Sylvari aren’t corruptable by dragons who aren’t named “Mordremoth”, which hinted they were minions (or at least were born of that dragon). Quaggan, though… we have both risen quaggan and iceborn quaggan (I think there are a few of these in the northern shiverpeaks), so they are clearly corruptable. We don’t know anything about the deep sea dragon, not even its minions unlike all the other dragons, but I can assure you will we will have quaggan fighting at our side and the bulk of the enemy army will probably be corrupted quaggan.

Though I do believe the OP is trolling this looks to be at most 16 to me:

You posted a pic of an adult female human.

You, good sir, have an … interesting image in mind of what you consider teen and want to play in this game.

As a real life human female, I’m sure you an attest that no teenager looks like what you posted, ever. Even in the movies.

I mean, what if I wanted to make an in game Harry Potter guild, and have the characters look like they’re from book 1 or 2? Right now, what I have is a bunch of adults cosplaying as an older looking wizard from book 5.

Acceptable Breaks from Reality. A lot of the armors accentuate the female’s… curves, so the bust size just isn’t going to be adjusted down that far. You’ll just have to pretend your character is younger if you want that, or avoid that section of history, or… y’know, roleplay offline using your imagination.

If we’re going down this road, I’d like some options so I can play as a teenaged male, too. However old or young people think the women look, the men all look like they’re in their 30’s. Yet, I don’t know if anyone has complained about them looking so old. Let’s get some baby-faced human guys out there!

Two Problems I Have on the Mastery System

The thing that has me confused is that they’ve said that masteries will be added to the core game as well as the expansion zones. When they say that, it sort of implies everyone will be unlocking masteries, but the majority of them will only be useful while in the Maguuma Jungle. I know people have interpreted from an interview that said “When people unlock Heart of Thorns, they will gain access to the Mastery system” or something similar that only people with the expansions will gain masteries, but I believe this might just be another one of those impulsive replies given in interviews, or people reading far too deeply into an off-hand comment in the interview. I suppose we’ll have to wait and see just what they have planned.

Double-jump for glider?

Rognik.2579

I’m wondering if there’s a mastery that will allow passive deployment of the glider as soon as you fall past the jumping point. By passive I mean it doesn’t require additional button presses, it just happens automatically.

That’s definitely possible, although I can see situations where a person just wants to fall rather than deploy the glider. I do know they mentioned there’s a mastery that allows the glider to be deployed sooner, so it’s certainly not out of the question.
