Anybody can create a group of friends to go raid. You might not make it very far at first and it would probably be a lot slower progression than if you went with a group of experienced raiders, but it can be done. It’s not that raiding itself may exclude some people, it’s that the completion of them will.
Anyone can start a raid. Not everyone can finish it. But if you enjoy the journey more than the destination, it really doesn’t matter.
I only jumped into the closed beta for just a bit on Sunday because I wanted to try out the Revenant. I admit I didn’t really do any testing because I didn’t want to spoil it for launch.
But I have to agree that the game is continuing to improve.
Most likely they’ve had a secret closed beta group playing for quite a while now.
I bought it a week ago and don’t regret it at all after playing in this last beta. I absolutely love the new Revenant class.
As far as the ascended armor and raids thing go, well yeah, Anet broke their word about some promises they made for the game a long time ago so why people expected them to not do it again is beyond me.
I only just got to try out Revenant for a bit this morning so I am late to the party.
This is going to be my main. I really enjoy the look and feel of the class.
I have only tested out hammer and mace w/ shield so far. I wish I had more feedback to offer but I really only got to play it for about an hour. Just enough to get me hooked. The expansion can’t come out soon enough.
Well, I don’t have any kids, but I am 43 and I love playing video games.
As for what kind of character to play, there really isn’t any way of knowing what you like until you’ve tried them all. Let her test out a few of them that you think she might like. Usually it doesn’t take long to decide which character you want to stick with.
No idea. I have a stack of 150 black lion chests sitting in my bank. I don’t buy keys. If I get keys, I open one. If not, it can sit in my bank.
I set up the SMS security thing with my cell phone. So far I have only gotten one text message from them and that was the code needed to complete the SMS account security. It’s not like they are going to call you and ask you if you want to buy stuff or sell your phone number to someone else. They are just trying to help you keep your account secure.
If they want to have the holy trinity required for raiding without people having to wait to have specific classes to do them, they are going to have to give every class a tank and heal spec.
You can play through all of the campaigns with a single character. It doesn’t matter which one you start with as they are independent stories. However, to access certain heroes you will need to have specific campagins (Olias requires prophecies as well as nightfall, for example).
Some things about GW1 that might help you decide.
1. There’s no crafting.
2. The world is instanced to your party.
3. Your party can consist completely of AI characters along with your player character.
4. You can select different skills and abilities for your action bars that are not pre-determined by your weapon choice (although certain skills are not usable unless you have a specific weapon equipped).
5. Certain gimick builds are necessary to complete certain hard mode activities.
6. As a low level character, you can be “run” to higher level areas and obtain the highest tier armor in the game which your character can equip and use (provided you have the currency and materials required by the armor crafters).
7. There’s no jumping or swimming.
8. There are a lot of fun titles that you can “grind” for.
9. Each of the chapters (with the exception of EotN which requires at least one of the other chapters (prophecies, factions or nightfall) to play) is stand alone. You do not have to purchase all of the campaigns and you can play them in any order you wish.
If you enjoy playing solo, you’ll probably have a lot of fun. If you enjoy having other random strangers running around fighting monsters along side you, then this isn’t the game for you. Also, last time I played, PvP was, for the most part, dead because of unresolved botting issues.
I played GW2 for a while when it first came out and had a lot of fun. Then I left the game for a while to play other things. I returned and found that the starting portion of the game had changed. At the time it felt very grindy and extremely boring as far as the combat was concerned. I vowed not to return until the game had improved.
I’m happy to say that I returned recently and I am enjoying playing quite a bit. I like the new changes that have been made to character building. It doesn’t feel so much like things are behind a level wall (although things are, it is just hidden much better).
I just wanted to take a moment to acknowledge the fact that the game has vastly improved since I last played. It’s very enjoyable now and I don’t feel like I’m being forced to grind for levels or even loot. I admit my warrior is only level 15 and I have not played through a large portion of the game. But I have played enough to notice that a lot of the things that annoyed me before have been improved. The skills and abilities make sense and feel intuitive, and the personal story, so far, has been a lot more fun than I remember.
I’m really impressed with the work that Arenanet has done to improve their game. GW1 had a magical something that kept me playing, and while GW2 is a vastly different game, it is starting to get some of that magical something. So keep up the great work guys. I might just shell out some of my hard earned money to buy that expansion after all.

I’m a returning player that hasn’t really done much with GW2 for quite some time. The game has changed so much!
I started my new warrior out with the greatsword and now that she is level 10, she can select her second weapon set. I want to run her through just about everything in the game. I don’t want to be a glass cannon but I do want to be able to hit hard with good survivability for whatever gets thrown my way. I noticed the one thread on the warrior PvE solo build but it looks to be more of a glass cannon max level build and that’s not really what I’m looking for. I don’t mind grouping occasionally for stuff but I am mostly a solo player.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
The one time event that I recall participating in (with Karkka I think it was) was riddled with bugs and glitches because it couldn’t be tested properly.
1. Polymock
2. the lands from Factions (Cantha and surrounding areas)
3. the lands from Nightfall (Elona and surrounding areas)
Actually, I’m surprised Polymock isn’t in the game already.
Actually I don’t overestimate Anet. But I don’t overestimate the forums either. Everyone on the forums is a complete stranger. I don’t know them at all. I’ve seen them post but I don’t always or even often agree with posts.
Anet is a company. The people who work there are. to some degree, proven entities. They produced a game I like. You didn’t. So I choose to trust them over you…knowing that everyone is fallible.
I believe the NPE was necessary but, as always with Anet, they took too strong a hand to it…and some of that has been subsequently rectified.
Anet as a company has often over-reacted. But it doesn’t mean the NPE was unnecessary.
The idea of retaining more new players is a great one. The execution of that idea and effectiveness its whats questionable.
As for forums, its tricky but there are people on the forum who seem to be “Experts” in thier fields, not that they are always right, or give the complete answer, but they understand things about the game that are beyond what even anet staff can see. There are posts the day patch notes on any given topic comes out, that accurately reflect what the future response will be, and how it effects the game. There are bugs found withing the first 5 minutes of playing that QA missed in however long their testing cycle is.
You can dismiss the forum as just some nobodies who dont really know anything, but somewhere in all of those posts 20 page long discussions, is almost always the guy who saw XYZ coming, or noticed something Devs didnt consider. Its not always the same guy, but the answers are there. Even when they dont have the answer, they often give insight into how different types of players are interacting with the game.
think about it, say you have 10 smart people who play the game a lot, discussing and analyzing an issue with open minds for 20 pages. Do you really think at anet has the time and energy to duplicate that?
These forums are actually a very powerful resource that generally companies have to pay people for, Some one just has to figure out how to correctly harness that.
No, I don’t dismiss the forum as nobodies. Anet says they tested this and it worked. Are they lying? Are the opinions of the forums better than Anet’s tests? Are you saying Anet is too incompetent to read their own data?
Maybe they are, maybe they’re not. But they tested it. We didn’t. So until we see the proof one way or another, I’m going to go with Anet.
The forums may or may not have a point (when they can agree on anything).
Anet has made three really bad decisions since the game started as far as I’m concerned.
The introduction of ascended gear.
The trait system revamp.
The end of the personal story from the 9/9 update. That’s three really bad changes from my point of view out of a whole lot of changes. It’s a pretty good track record for me.
That doesn’t mean I dismiss the forums. I listen to what’s said and in this instance I judge Anet’s data to be a better source…until we hear otherwise. At the very least, we should wait for data from the weekend to be processed/revealed.
Colin said if it doesn’t work they’ll let us know. Hopefully they’ll be forthcoming with some information about this soon.
its not about incompetence, its an art and a science to truely understand and use data. Also, it may not even be anet’s error. Often companies pay some one else to gather the data and analyze the results and give them back some bullet points. Perhaps these companies didnt really understand the intricacies of the groups they were dealing with.
Point is, using data correctly at a high level isnt like look data gave me the answers, its something even people whose whole life is research fail at fairly consistently. Take a look at the salt causes high blood pressure question, numerous studies, numerous statistics, proffesionals, and still they get new data, or have to qualify their findings.
also its not so much about the forums agreeing on something, it more about what they are saying, what they are observing, why they are predicting X
anyhow it, just like metrics is not something you can just look at and it gives you the answers, they still will have to do their developer thing. But it is a resource.
What Anet says was that they tried a bunch of different builds and one build showed that more people stayed playing longer.
I’m not really sure how to misinterpret that.
This new change discourages the creation of alts. That in turn limits how much revenue (if any) they are going to make on purchasable character slots.
Someone new to an MMO is going to be confused no matter what. This gating things at levels that don’t even make sense doesn’t help at all.
They got it right with GW1 and I don’t understand how they can’t seem to get it right in GW2.
This is a step backwards.
I don’t understand how spamming 1 1 1 over and over again helps a new player learn how the combat system works.
I was going to return to playing the game. I created a new character and experienced this level gating for myself.
I will not be playing anymore until they change the game back to the way it was.
Sorry, Anet, you permanently lost a customer until you remove this ridiculous content gating.
I play games for fun. This is NOT fun.
(edited by Rpgtabbycat.5869)
Somewhere along the way during development, ANet forgot to put the heart and soul of Guild Wars 1 into this game. That is what is missing and what needs to be fixed.
The only improvements GW2 has over GW1 is prettier graphics and you can jump and swim.
I dislike the Living Story and wish they’d do away with it and give us real content instead. My cash isn’t going to change their mind about that so I see no reason to buy gems. They’ve already gotten enough of my money.
Well here’s the rub. I pay the same box price as you do to access all the content of the game. But if I have to take a break from the game for whatever reason, I miss out on all the time limited content. Which means you get more of the game than I do. Even though both of us paid the same price with the understanding that we’d get all the content.
If I pay the same price as you do, I should have access to all the same content, regardless of when I want to play it. But I don’t. I get less content than you do because all the new content that I was supposed to get for free with the game, is gone.
I don’t see them adding an expansion any time soon. Probably more of the living story stuff. I’d greatly prefer it if they did actually add in some real content instead of all the temporary fluff.
The only fun thing about crafting is discovery.
Farming materials is tedious and time consuming because of DR. Items you craft aren’t worth anything. And, of course, anything really awesome that you could make would take forever and a small fortune to create.
Take a break for a while, set it aside, come back to it when you’ve forgotten how to play.
I quit playing for about a year because I got bored with it. Playing again and it’s fun and interesting to see the changes. Sadly, the reasons I quit haven’t been fixed so I’ll probably just end up playing it for a few months again before I quit.
I think they should just take the best things that everyone loved about gw1 and the things that actually worked well and were enjoyable from gw2 and merge them together to create gw3.
GW2 had so much potential. I was so sad when the game didn’t deliver.
Have any new permanent zones been released since game launch? I’ve been away a long time and from what I can tell, all the updates have been temporary.
You can add me to the list of those that don’t care for the entire Living Story thing. Temporary content just isn’t fun. And it certainly doesn’t feel like regular updates that they promised. Updates should grow the game but this temporary stuff doesn’t do that. It’s like, oh a temporary event. I don’t think I even want to bother doing it because it will be over soon and everything I do with it will be a waste of time.
To be honest, Temporary content is not bringing me back to GW2. I stopped playing because I was bored of the current content. It just feels pointless to come back to play some temporary event that will only last a short time and this is over and done with. After it’s over, I’ll be back to being bored.
You guys did it right when you made content for Guild Wars 1. Why aren’t you doing the same with Guild Wars 2?
This game was very fun to level up but sadly it didn’t keep my interest. Maybe if there was something added to the game that was actually a permanent part of the game, and it was added on a regular basis, I would come back.
As the game is right now, even if you release an expansion, I most likely will not buy it and most likely will not return to the game.
I’m not trying to bash GW2, just trying to provide some honest constructive criticism for the developers of the game.
The only thing you accomplish by calling out hackers and exploiters on the forum is an infraction for yourself.
Best bet is to report them to ANet.
As someone from TC, who was sitting in 2nd by only a few hundred points 12 hours ago…what the heck happened last night? o.o
I don’t mean this as infalmitory or anything, I’m genuinely curious what happened.
I was on from 12-2:30 am and we had no commanders on and no queues for any of the maps. Everyone just went to bed I suppose.
TC doesn’t have 24/7 coverage which is why some people were a bit worried about the move into T2. But when we do have presence, we fight hard. Regardless, TC never gives up.
Ok TC 30,000 points ahead…lets keep this up so we can finally leave this Tier. Just need SoR and BG to put the hammer on IoJ.
Not entirely sure TC is ready to move into Tier 2. We need 24/7 coverage for that and I don’t think we have it yet.
People are upset because when the game first came out, the max level gear was easy to obtain in multiple ways. People could then run around doing whatever it was they felt like doing, whether it was collecting the dungeon sets for the skins or working towards crafting a Legendary (which was not more powerful than an exotic) or just doing WvW.
Now, however, people feel like they are being forced to grind FotM in order to get the Ascended gear so they can remain competitive. The fear is you will have to have Ascended in order to do WvW or you’ll get steamrolled by someone who is in full Ascended gear. You’ll have to get Ascended gear in order to even do the older dungeon content because Players will require it to group with them.
People who don’t want to run fractals or don’t like the dungeon now feel forced to do them.
It’s affected the community and the feel of the game.
I want to start out and say that I love GW2. And I really wanted to remain optimistic about the new Ascended gear and fractals dungeon.
But the feel of the game while playing the game.. the community has changed because of this. I’m taking a break from it. I don’t know what ANet is planning to do next. I don’t plan on quitting at this time. I just need to step back from all the chaos that has been caused by this one change.
Right now all people seem to be interested in doing is Fractals. It’s like that’s all there is to do in the game.
Maybe they can explain that when they can explain why sometimes I take health damage when going down stairs.
There’s nothing wrong with leaving your constructive feedback on the forum when you leave. I encourage you to do so as it helps the developers make a better game.
The problem is people are leaving their constructive feedback on why they left and then repeating it over and over for days and days until the rest of us feel like our forums are being held hostage by them.
There is a practical impossibility to tell who has actually left the game, since there isn’t a monthly fee and unless someone asks for a refund (in which case their account is deactivated and I doubt they can still post), someone could have materially stopped playing but is still a customer with a right to voice his/her opinions.
Besides this, I understand where you come from, but I think you guys should try and switch your point of view a bit.
The reason we keep posting is ArenaNet hasn’t even aknowledged the existence of our negative feedback, let alone saying they are doing something with it. So we keep repeating things because it’s the only way we have to let them know that ignoring our feedback is not making us magically accept their new direction or get accustomed with it.
We want them to know that, if they want to settle things, they have to confront us honestly and not ignore us. And since there isn’t a subscription we can cancel to give them a clear message, either we keep posting our dissatisfaction or we actually forget about this game and move on.
Which is something some of us are not prepared to do just yet, and ArenaNet should thank us for that.
You all have already made at least somewhat of an impact. As of this morning, across all servers, 4 are full, 3 are medium and the rest are high population. There are still plenty of people playing and enjoying the new content though.
If the numbers showed a larger scale of people leaving the game (a mass exodus), then I could see ANet changing it back to the old system. If, however, the new system brings in and retains more players than it loses, it would make financial sense for them to keep the new system in place.
It doesn’t change the fact that some of you are upset over what you see as a direct contradiction to their manifesto. The question is: were there enough of you who didn’t want end game progression enough to keep the game going over the long haul? I think a lot more people reached level 80 and left because there wasn’t the type of end game content that they expected than there were people who were just happy to explore and grind for cosmetic skins.
(edited by Rpgtabbycat.5869)
They did tell us from the very beginning that there would be “pink” items. It’s just now that they’ve actually given them a name.
No they didnt. I don’t believe that one second. Link please.
Everything links to the new changes. I can’t find anything else. I could be mistaken but I could’ve sworn there was another color that just wasn’t used in the game.
I strongly agree with the OP. I’m seeing too many posts about people’s upset feelings, conspiracy theories, and opinions and not enough actual constructive feedback.
The forums are for the people who still play the game, not for those who have left the game for whatever reason. The problem is, the second type of people are still on the forums spewing their hatred for the changes in the game. This makes it a hostile environment for those of us who do still play this game.
Again, this forum is for those who DO play the game. If you don’t play the game anymore for whatever reason, please move elsewhere. Thank you.
What you call “spewing hatred” I call giving feedback. The difference between you and me is that you are trying to silence me while I haven nothing against you posting.
Especially if you manage to be more constructive than you have just been.

I am on the side of the camp that believes the Manifesto is still correct and that there is no gear treadmill in this game. You don’t even need Exotics to do everything. Are the new Ascended pieces more desirable than the exotics? Yes, they are. Do I need them to complete all the content in the game? No I don’t. Are the Legendary weapons more desirable than exotics? Yes, they are. Do I need them to complete everything in the game? No, unless you are talking about some achievement points and you do need them to complete that achievement.
Sorry guys, that’s not how gated content works. You have the option to choose between having them and not having them.

I enjoy running around solo to do the following things: discover new areas, do quests, some dynamic events, and farm for materials.
I enjoy running around in a group to do the following things: some dynamic events, world bosses, dungeons and WvW.
GW2 makes it easy to do many of these things solo. All they need to do is improve their LFG tool.
They did tell us from the very beginning that there would be “pink” items. It’s just now that they’ve actually given them a name. We will probably have a similar uproar when they eventually add in Legendary Armor.
People on the forum seem to feel the need to be overly melodramatic in their posting of their dislike of this new content. Helpful critical feedback tends to get thrown out the window.
(edited by Rpgtabbycat.5869)
People were upset. People voiced their opinions. People stopped playing the game.
My server is still Full. My server still has overflow. My server still has people in the starting zone and everywhere else. I got the Balthazar Cathedral armor for my mesmer today. ^-^
If I hadn’t read the forums, I wouldn’t have known people were upset. There’s more complaining here than in game. People playing are having fun and enjoying the new content. I’m sorry you aren’t. Actually, I’m tired of hearing about it on the forums. This is old news.
The current complaint is that people want a better LFG tool to help them find other players doing the Fractals at their level.
I would say take a look at http://mos.millenium.org/matchups#NA and select which tier you want to be in. From there, investigate the servers in that tier and choose the one that fits your needs.
If FA was in the same position regarding SM, you would have done the same thing. You would have preferred the team with the fewest amount of points (YB) to get the castle because they would have presented less of a threat to you than TC would have. Also, the TC leaders at the time may have thought it would be easier to get SM back from YB later on rather than having to fight FA for it.
This is strategy.
Perhaps, Jairlyn, but it’s still a legitimate concern, particularly in WvW.
The only thing persistant about GW1 were the city/ town hubs where you could group up with your friends. Once you left the towns, you were given an instanced area that only you and those in your group could play. This was why people were able to Vanquish areas in Hard Mode. Vanquishing meant you had to kill all the enemies in a zone. Once something was killed it did not respawn.
Some people already have to get the mats to throw in the mystic forge to create the ascended backpack. So yes, this is do-able. I wouldn’t recommend it though.
