For a game that calls itself Guild Wars, there’s hardly any focus on it.
This bull-kitten, again…
“Guild Wars 2,” the game, is named what it is for marketing reasons, to ensure that the players of the first game would know that this was a “continuation” of the original “Guild Wars,” Co-OpRPG. The original “Guild Wars” was named as such because of it’s original design, that being a PvP-based MMO, but was changed during its development into a PvX centric game (with PvE eventually taking the spotlight).
Additionally, lore-wise, both games are named after an event which predates their timelines, that being the Guild Wars. The Guild Wars were a series of wars fought by some of the largest guilds on continental Tyria, with the last one ending due to Ascalon entering into serious conflict with the Charr.
“Guild Wars 2” isn’t named the way it is due to a focus on guilds, that content was never meant to be a focus of the game. It was named after its predassosor who kept its original name despite it having its original design elements changed.
Yes it will extract it.

And we’re just saying that we were all told well in advance that the merchants would go away.
Pvp (of any kind) and Pve should never get mixed. EVER.
^ that’s kind of my point.
Oh no~! If only there were a way to get to Rank 14 without having to touch a single enemy player~!
Oh wait…If you are referring to what I said you are missing the point, there could be a button you press and BAM instant lvl 1000 world experience that it wouldn’t change my point of view about mixing pvp and pve.
And you can completely bypass the PvP portion of getting the Gift of Battle, so your point is moot.
My point isn’t moot at all its still pvp related and you need badges for it.
I have over 2000 badges and have hardly stepped foot in WvW. I got the majority of those badges from Achievement chests which can be unlocked without having to touch PvP and WvW.
Are you sure you’re not bringing up a moot point? Because it kind of looks like you are.

Heck, people in Map Chat have been mentioning it since it was first announced on the forums a few days ago whenever I was on.

Because money doesn’t grow on trees, and it took them some of it to make them.
I mean, how much does a person really need one of these new hairstyles on their character?

What do you mean by big reward? Back when the event was bugged and counters on server main maps didn’t reset, Blackgate got the citizens saved to well over 2000. Once the miasma maxed, I got a chest with 25 bags of alliance supplies. While that is more than I was getting at lower levels, it certainly isn’t that much. Am I missing something? Is there another big reward past 1500 citizens saved?
The bugged instances weren’t giving out proper rewards from what I understand.

My top three would have to be:
- Ranger
- Elementalist
- Engineer
I took the liberty and counted ALL votes till svracak.9671. You guys are just too fast for me.
As it stands the results are now:
Elementalist: 230 Votes (22.66%)
Necromancer: 162 Votes (15.96%)
Engineer: 132 Votes (13.00%)
Guardian: 13 Votes (1.28%)
Warrior: 29 Votes (2.86%)
Thief: 74 Votes (7.29%)
Ranger: 299 Votes (29.46%)
Mesmer: 76 Votes (7.49%)
Total: 1015 Votes (100%)If there is any interest I could give numbers on how often a profession was ranked 1. etc.
This is awesome. I was going to do this at the end, but it’s cool to keep an updated list like this. Thanks for taking the time to do that! How often a profession is ranked 1 would also be super awesome.
I’d just like to point out that some people may have posted multiple times at this point, so it wouldn’t be a bad idea to double/triple check the votes to make sure they’re accurate.
there is a cap for condition duration it’s 100%.
And it should be 40%.
Or let it stay at 100%, but make it harder to get to that amount.
I like the song… I mean I didn’t at first, but it started to grow on me after a while… :x
I’m a sylvari guardian, and I have to say that the chivalry the race presents works very well with the guardian profession in general.
I’m also a fan of charr guardians and norn guardians. Since norn have a lot of honor going for them, and because a heavy armored magic wielding charr sounds cool!
Human guardian is fine too, but overplayed. There really isn’t anything interesting going for them.
Asuran guardians make sense since they use magic, and the idea of using a hammer to punt others as an asura is beyond amazing! xD
It’s not even really a case of storytelling, but life in general – which is why it goes into storytelling so much. People without a reason to get up and be motivated just aren’t going to get up and do something fantastic. There’s really two general scenarios to give a character to get them into a good plot:
1) You give them some motivation in their background. Most cases can be classified as “tragic” because tragedy is the most motivating – for both doing good or bad. The only alternative would be to give the person a normal life and they meet someone who becomes their hero (which seems to be what Taimi’s going to be – with Scarlet being a “fallen idol” and Braham replacing her).
2) Force the character into the plot. A character, for no reason of their own, is forced into going with the flow (so to speak) and have to choice in the matter. There’s one other trigger: The sense you can do more for the world and others by not standing by and doing nothing when you think you can fix it. It’s the thing which drives inventors who develop things purely to help others. (See: Norman Borlaug)
People can do extraordinary things without being subjected to complete misery themselves. They may need to be moved to action, but it is through the suffering of others rather than their own troubles.
Can’t tell if an attempt to pun-up my name…
Regardless I share the same feelings as you.
I like helping others. I try my best to make sure that everyone else around me is as happy as they can possibly be. My life has been relatively dull, though. Some people I know may have died, and one may have been murdered, but I would have been the same wanna-be good guy regardless of these facts. My parents are alive and happily married to one another, my brother is sitting in his Statistics course waiting for me to respond to a text he just sent me, and none of my friends are starving on the streets/gone off the deep end. There has been no tragedy in my life to justify why I still want to help others.
Why then, is it that this game needs a someone to have some sort of sob story in order to be a hero? Why can’t a hero in this game have a happy life, and use that as motivation to keep it happy? I sorry, but when I see a new character walking into the limelight with some sort of sad past, I don’t feel much sympathy for them. At least not anymore.
Which is already true for a large amount of the armor we have received since launch in GW2.
Of course. I am just pointing out that people don’t seem to have an issue with it happening in GW1 but here it is apparently the worst thing ever.
To be fare, I don’t think people would have had an issue with it if it weren’t for the fact that it was a cheaper version of T3 light. The part were it stopped being race-exclusive was pulling at straws, at least for me. The sets were different, but just not different enough.
A good example that I like to think to in terms of the re-skins Eye of the North introduced would be the Ritualist Asuran armor and the Ritualist Seitung armor. both use identical models, but have very distinct textures. A player would have to have been an armor connoisseur in Guild Wars to have been able to tell that the Ritualist Asuran set was a reskin.
However, returning to my point, both the Ritualist Asuran and Ritualist Seitung armor sets had one thing that made it actually ok for them to share the same model. Their costs were both expensive, and in this case, Ritualist Asuran was even more difficult to acquire and was considered an Elite set. Ritualist Seitung was an expensive set only due to the fact that it required Monstrous Claw to craft, which was a very rare material to aquire. Ritualist Asuran, however, required a player to level their ranking within Asuran society, and also pay the Elite price for the armor set. Both required a heavy investment to obtain. Flamekissed and Human tier 3 light were not in the same boat.
Flamekissed armor was a much cheaper, and debatably better looking, set. If I remember correctly, the Gold to Gem conversion made it so Flamekissed was twice as cheaper than T3 Human light… which really isn’t fare considering the prestige T3 armor is supposed to have in this game.
Hrm… I’m surprised that I’ve never written in this thread before… Though I have posted in similar threads, so go figure!
Anyway, here’s my list:
- Tengu – Makes the most sense since they actually were going to be a playable race at the start of the game. Sadly, they were cut early in development due to ArenaNet deciding that they’ll add the race later on. Though really, I believe this decision was made sometime when the Canthan District was destroyed, and retconed into the Arts District. Since tengu drew a lot of parallels with Asian culture, it wouldn’t surprise me if a lot of their architecture and designs had a strong Asian flare to them. A flare that had to be put out because they didn’t want to misinterpret Asian cultures… or whatever.
- Largos – Makes some sense. We don’t know much about them, but their society is structured similarly to how the current playable races are. They are divided into houses, which can be paralleled with sylvari seasons, asuran colleges, norn animal spirits, etc. and their models are similar to humans, which would make their armor conversion easy. Their wings could suffer the horn and tail clipping issues charr currently suffer from.
- Kodan – This is more wishful thinking from my part. Kodan don’t seem to have a varied appearance to them, which would make it hard to develop distinct appearances for the. I mean, they’re polar-bear people. You can’t pick their fur color, since all polar bears have white-looking fur, so the most they could get is maybe fur markings to aid in distinguishing them from one another.
White girl with daddy issues. It’s just so…
O.C.
And this is not a complaint about the writing, if I was a writer I’d be glad that people have differing views on certain characters.
Kasmeer is just so contrived in terms of personality.
Wait, so a female who’s father is thrown in prison while trying to protect his family, and then dies there, now constitutes as a means for having “daddy issues?”
That term seriously got wrapped beyond anything sane, huh..?
Kasmeer as a character is overall fine, though looking at that story, she does suffer from a serious issue that almost every character in Guild Wars 2 must apparently have to deal with; a tragic backstory.
Don’t believe me? Look up each member of Destiny’s Edge, the supporting cast of the Personal Story, and then each of the new iconic characters that have been introduced with the Living World. Most, if not all, of the characters in those three groups seems to have some past demon that haunts them with someone important to them dying being the most predominant one.
If we do happen to get a sylvari iconic, which I’m hoping for since I like sylvari, they’ll have a dead friend/lover/“sibling”/etc. that’ll give them a reason to do good. If not, then the story will very well take them into that direction.
Ranger should switch with warrior. That would be a good start.
I actually wouldn’t have any problem with this tbh.
It’s already 21st of January & the day is passing but where is the patch?
Does anyone have idea at what time GMT +/- are they going to patch the game ?
Well, for one, ArenaNet is an American company stationed in the West Coast. If you were to look at the date and time over there at the moment of myself posting this, it is 4:33 PST on Tuesday January 21, 2014. Their work day has yet to even start.
From past experiance, they tend to have an update up anywhere between 10:00 AM PST to 12:00 PM PST. Though, I’ve never kept track of all their update times.
Is the rune and sigil patch today, or at a later date?
It wasn’t said when it would occur, but I don’t think it would be for this patch.
I say this because the Balance team has always waited a month, and a few weeks, to push a large update. Seeing as this is going to be an overhaul of sigils, runes, along with gear balancing and general skill and trait changes, I’m guessing that we won’t see this go into the game until the last Febuary patch, or any sort of patch they might have in March.
There seems to be a discrepancy between what the OP is stating and what the video is showing. Yes, the OP (or whomever is in the video) is only pressing 1 and just standing there. OP is also receiving a ton of support however from the rest of the group. Watch the heals he’s getting and the buffs. You are not face-tanking the boss while everyone else DPS’s. You’re being carried, heavily, by strong support from the rest of the party.
OP only one in the fight using “1” only.
Thay also aren’t really showing us any combat situations that would prove that Vitality, Toughness, and Heal Power are OP.
I don’t know about anyone else, but at lower levels the Oakheart and Archdiviner aren’t that big of threats to me. However, once you start doing level 40+ Fractal runs, you really see how crazy damage scaling can get in this game. Additionally, I would have liked to have seen how the seal destroying encounters, and final Archdiviner encounter went, since those can get very dangerous for people who don’t dodge, or at least for the players who don’t try to avoid getting hit.
Show me how this build would’ve faired against the final Grawl Shaman encounter in the Volcano Fractal at level 50. Show me what would would happen if you tried standing in his fire storms, and tried to tank one of his swoop attacks. If you can survive those attacks without any sweat, then I’ll believe that actual tanking is possible, and maybe even OP, in this game.
Any of the old Mesmer armor sets, with a shout out to the Norn, Monument, and Enchanter sets.

So… You got a source?
Can you please try to devote a reasonable amount of time discussing classes? Especially with how you feel the class is right now, whether or not you feel they’re overpowered or underpowered, and, if they’re underpowered, WHY you think they’re underpowered?
And can you please try to make this a little more balanced when it comes to discussing classes? Warriors, Thieves, and Elementalists always get 10minutes or more each and Rangers for some reason get a half-hearted 30 second blurb of no-one-really-cares.
Can you guys please do this! I really want to see an equal amount of discussion be made about each profession, and where you guys feel they are. I always remember a live stream in the past where you guys were showing off a an update to each class, and only spent an uninterested five seconds talking about guardian traits, and you didn’t even know where the changes were made. I really want to see what you guys think of the class, in comparison to the other classes, and the same to be done to each one.
After which Zhaitan’s flood supposedly drowned the whole Battle Isles…
Not before other rangers arrived to the menagerie, obtained a stalker from the monks there, and took them along their own journey. Granted, that’s more of an assumption of what could have happened.
I’m also pretty sure that is was said that sylvari do have genitals, but they’re not used for reproductive purposes. They have them, and they use them for the deed, but they can’t produce children from it, not yet at least. They sylvari themselves are around 25-years-old, and there’s new information coming out about them every often. Maybe down the line we will find out if they can indeed reproduce, and how it’s possible.
That being said, I’d like to say that I don’t care about the fact that Kas and Jory are in a romantic relationship with one another. For the sake of diversity, however, I will say that I wouldn’t mind seeing another heterosexual relationship take stage, or maybe (and this is a bit of wishful thinking) a relationship between two men. Right now the only relationship, or romantic debacle, we’re seeing are the ones between Kas and Jory, and Caithe and Faolain respectively. We have Logan and Jenna’s “relationship,” but that’s been written into a state of “Overly Attached Male Friend.”
Bottom line is that Logan and Jenna’s relationship hasn’t been clearly defined by the writers. We see hints of maybe there being more, but it’s been more of a case of Logan’s feelings for Jenna interfering with certain aspects of their jobs. We have not seen a clear confession from Jenna, we don’t even know how she truly feels for Logan. We just see a guy who’d do anything for a woman that he loves, but then get blindsided by said woman because he’s being pushy. That’s it.
I’m not saying that there’s anything wrong with this, I’m just saying that if we’re going to compare actual relationships in this game, Kassmer and Marjory’s relationship is the only one we actually have. Everyone else has either been in a relationship in the past, or we don’t know what their deal is.
Like I said, I have no real issue with this, but it wouldn’t hurt to throw in some more diverse couples into the fray, even if they aren’t taking center stage. (Note: I’d love to see whatever happened between Snarl and Galina, there was defiantly some tension between those two!)
I think the one of biggest issues, and one that contributes the most to the pro-DPS crowds is the fact that Armor does nothing against a lot of hard hitting bosses. Take for instance a lot of the encounters in higher level Fractals; you can be specced for 3k+ armor, yet still get one-shot by almost anything in there. You can’t tank.
It makes sense because movement and positioning take precedence in terms of damage mitigation, but then why do we even have Toughness and Armor as a stats.
For me, one of the best ways to make full DPS builds seem less worth it would be to actually help make stats like Armor and health matter more.
If we see dueling, we better not see it in the more populated areas of Major Cities. I already had to deal with the people that spammed their horns as if they were honking a vuvuzela at the 2010 World Cup… I don’t want to have to deal with people blasting all their skills on cooldown because they want to show off how “pro” they are.
I’m all for dueling, and I will admit that I’d love to see the stadium in the Black Citadel be converted into a 1v1 battle arena similar to how the Queen’s Gauntlet worked with bosses. Now that would be awesome.
We just wanted to respond to the image that has been data-mined from the Edge of the Mists testing branch.
This is a testing branch. We conduct internal experiments for various territories on our testing branches. This particular experiment is not being tested for the West.
As always, keep in mind that we test a lot more than we ship, so data-mining is no guarantee of anything. If we have announcements to make about future content, we’ll make them through the usual official channels.
Thanks for this statement. But if it’s not for the west then why is it in English?
Well, ArenaNet is based in the US, so I’m sure they’d need their employees to understand what they’re reading.
“F” is for friends that do stuff together
“U” is for you and me
“N” is for anywhere and any time at all…
Jokes aside, this is a pretty clear representation of why I would deem fun in an MMO. I love being able to organize stuff with friends, and making sure that they all get to be part of the action. It’s especially true when it isn’t restricted to certain areas of the game.
In other words, I love doing group content be it Dungeons, World Bosses, Meta Events. I loved the Tower of Nightmares because it was a borderline dungeon that could be done by groups larger than 5. It was perfect for my style of play, and I dearly hope that ArenaNet continues with this style of content in the future!!
I don’t see how this could make people be able to complete puzzles easier, I’ve yet to ever encounter one where a parachute could lift you higher to the next tier which generally is how most of the hardest ones work. Also, a simple 1 direction parachute would allow players the option of jumping without the problems of landing at the top of these puzzles because the hardest ones generally have no outside access surrounding the area that anyone could get high enough to leap onto these things and finish them from anywhere else.
There’s at least one puzzle that would be made completely trivial if ArenaNet were to introduce a parachute/glider into the game, and that’s Behem Gauntlet.
Other than that, I don’t recall any Jump Puzzles that make extensive use of falling. Personally, I can see ArenaNet disallowing the use of these items while inside of a Jump Puzzle, so it wouldn’t be that big of a problem. I’m for it!!
You mind linking to which chest and Jump Puzzle your exactly referring to?
slot on h tab for mini
slot on ui for consumables
wardrobe and build template
These please!
Even if we still have to pay gold to respec, I’d live to be able to save my builds in-game and not on some third party website…
Why not a heavy armored Dervish profession?
The reason why a dervish wore robes on the first place, was to show their devotion to the gods that they worshipped. Since professions in Guild Wars 2 are religious unbiased, then the Dervish profession, once specializing in melee combat, would have wanted to upgrade their leather robes for something sturdier.
I just want the Dervish to be a thing again… And scythes for that matter…
Right here in General Discussion.
Wouldn’t it be better though, to have a sub-forum dedicated to discussions general mechanics and operation and organizational ideas for guild in a sub-forum just for that. A Guild General Discussion forum can better organize developers and players interested in discussing these sorts of topics.
Same with what Gulesave said about a General Profession Discussion sub-forum. I don’t know how many times I’ve seen people posting threads comparing x profession with y on y’s sub-forum, or multiple threads started by players wanting to see changes done across the board. Another thing a General Profession Discussion sub-forum can do is allow for team composition and tactics threads to be created, without fearing that they won’t get a proper grasp from posters when in a sub-forum dedicated to only one profession.
Uh… I feel as though someone has a very slow internet connection.
Tabitha Raas: 6/10
Taine Thelle: 8/10
They’re both nice names!
Mine go as this!
Tobius Lockehart: A Krytan street rat who lived a life of crime before striking rich after he found his inheritance stashed away in his parents home. He never knew of their existence sadly, which was why it took so long for him to obtain the money. He lived most of his life resenting them until he found out that they had lost their lives making sure he was protected. Now he spends his days among the nobility (he made some sound investments that made him richer, helps that he’s very in touch with the city’s underbelly) trying to find clues on who it was that killed his parents. Though that doesn’t mean he can’t excuse himself from pestering an engineer buddy he’s seems oddly enamored with lately.
Anthea Floros: A Krytan noble who can trace her heritage back to the Sunspears of Elona. Her family is an established mercantile family, and she has never had the need to do so much as lift her finger for anything. Still, the pride she has for her family’s past made her dreams to become a hero thrive. She hid her training in magic and combat from her parents, but her grandmother had a hand in shaping her into the battle-hardened elementalist she is today. Sadly though, she’s still caught up with the inner politics of the nobles within Divinity’s Reach, and constantly has to break up fights between two of her dear friends…
Rayne Henwood: An inventor tracing his routes back to Cantha, but even further still to Ascalon and Elona, Rayne has spent all his life tinkering about with machines. His love and extensive knowledge of engineering even granted him access to Divinity’s Reach’s most prestigious academies. A feat that was very uncommon for one born of a commoner’s family such as his. Still, he’s grateful for the opportunities thrown his way, except for the “friendship” he’s acquired with an annoying thief who seems to have latched onto him recently.
Well, I don’t think I could come up with a new spot everyday as I already found a lot.
http://howellq.imgur.com/ for those interested, there are character albums (dyejobs for GuildWarsDyeJob subreddit – with a few funny photos) but the exploration pictures are in the Traveling and Just Playing galleries.
I kind of have that problem, but it’s more that I don’t have a lot of obvious places to screenshot, so I need to look for more obscure and off-the-beaten-trail areas. Though I have gone back to some of the obvious places, but now I’ve tried to find new angles and perspectives to take screen shots from. It’s been a lot of fun imo!!!
I use the /sleep trick to hide my character from view when I want to take landscape images, but it would be a lot more easier with a 1st-person camera! xD
Alternatively, portraits aren’t always such a bad thing! :p
A few of us over on Twitter have taken up a fun challenge to take one screenshot in Guild Wars 2 every day for a year. We’re using the hashtag #GW2Project365 to share our images with one another!
I think this is fun little project to take part in that could get us out to explore the world a little more in order to share some of the more beautiful areas this game has to offer. It’s also a way for people to improve their inner photographer, even if it’s just screenshots!
I thought I’d share this with the forum goers to spread the idea around more!
Hate: nothing
Also consider that “hate” is such a strong word, and it baffles me all the time how mindlessly people throw it around without actually understanding its true meaning. That being said…
Maybe you don’t understand humans and you think like a computer… kinda like sheldon from the big bang theory. Every other person knows, that with ‘hate’, we mean ‘dislike’,
Then why not just say ‘dislike?’
With the idea of new weapon skills being thrown around in the CDI thread on Horizontal Progression, I thought it would be cool to get everyone here to throw around some ideas for alternate skills that we could unlock for our currently usable weapons.
Note: This thread is not about giving guardians NEW weapons, but new skills for our current weapons. If you want to talk about new weapons for the guardian, then start your own thread.
Here are some alternate skills that I thought up for the shield:
#4: Zealous Adherence – Teleport to target. If they were in combat, they are now Dazed.
Damage: 70 (0.2)
Daze: 2 s
Range: 600
#5a: Guard’s Bastion – Block the next five attacks. If five attacks are blocked, send out a wave of energy that damages and launches foes.
Duration: 6 s
Damage: 650 (0.8)
Launch: 500
#5b: Guard’s Redoubt – Stop blocking. Grant yourself, and nearby allies, Aegis.
Aegis: 20 s

Treat them like all other vendor trash you don't use and keep on'a rollinJust sell the bags. I’m sure they are useful to first time players.
Gonna jump on this too. It loot that can be sold to a vendor, so there is no problem with getting them. It’s not like they’re soulbound on pickup. This is beyond a non-issue.
Because they totally price items on the Gem Store with the gold to gem conversion in mind…
You know that the Crystal Desert is part of Joko’s Domain? If not, then at the very least a good portion of its southern border is in his control, so returning to Elona could very well involve gaining access to the Crystal Desert.
Also, people can ask for whatever they want, and it’s clear that there’s a good amount asking for Cantha, so telling them to not to is going on deaf ears.
Well, if you can remember any of their characters’ names, you could look them up that way. I know of a few players from Guild Wars that reused their old characters names when they made the transition since they were allowed to keep them for a few months after launch.
The charr ate him…
My mesmer if my favorite.
Your mesmer looks awesome! I swear, I feel like should have made a male human spellcaster! They can get some really awesome armor combos!!! :Q
