@OP:
Yeah it could be fun. As they are very clear to state that the game is not balanced around 1v1, I do not see how it can have a ladder though.
And yet… SO MANY people try to give suggestions in which they’re trying to balance/fix the game around 1v1’ing…
You guys are confusing masteries with collections.
In order to unlock new legendary weapon precursors you need to have level 3 MASTERY of them (see mastery blog).
When you hit level 1 of MASTERY you unlock 3 levels of COLLECTIONS that allow you to get certain old precursors. you do not need to complete these collections to advance your mastery. Mastery is advanced only by 1. Spending mastery points, and 2. leveling up in HoT zones.
So to summarize:
1. Spend 1 mastery point – unlocks precursor collection for 7(?) OLD precursors
2. Talk to legendary trainer to unlock specific collection associated with those 7 precursors
3. Spend an additional mastery point(s) to unlock tier 2 mastery, unlocking the other 7(?) OLD precursors
4. Talk to legendary trainer to unlock specific collection associated with those 7 precursors
5. Spend additional mastery points to unlock tier 3 mastery, unlocking NEW precursors
6. Talk to legendary trainer to unlock specific collection associated with NEW precursors. You never have to complete a collection to advance your mastery.
Thanks, that makes more sense.
Well, being forced to craft old legendaries before getting any new ones seems awfully work intensive for something you don’t really want just to get to the one you do want….
Yeah, my thought exactly. I hope that this isn’t the case.
Just want to clarify if it is or isn’t the case.
My understanding is each precursor (old and new) has its own individual 3-stage track. Finishing (or being grandfathered) track progress on old precursors isn’t going to get you any closer to a new one or different old one.
Dancing and drinking and eating fine food (step 3 for the Moot) doesn’t exactly flow as a step in building the precursor for the Predator…
Ah, okay. I can settle with that.
Because if they were awarded it would lock them out of getting another one by the new method
.
Keep in mind, for people who have a precursor or legendary already, they will be getting the new progression weapon skins automatically and for free come launch day. So that aspect of the rewards is fully retroactive.
True, but I already have all legendaries I wanted, tell me what motivation I have to get one of the existing precursers so i can start to craft a new legendary? (That is how I read it, maybe I’m wrong) – If the new legendaries should be my only motivation that’s pretty boring as I will get nothing of interest for me along the way – no, not even the gold I might get by selling the pre.
Yeah, essentially this.
Like the people that already have legendaries might not have any motive to go through the process besides getting to to crafting the new ones. Which seems a little without reason to make them go through the first 3 “guidance” levels.
To clarify my concern a bit further…
It seems, from my interpretation, that one would have to craft an old precursor in order to be able to craft new precursors/legendaries. As in first 3 levels of the mastery help you create only the old percursors. At level 4 of the mastery you’re able to create new precursors/legendaries. So, you have to get through the first 3 levels, crafting an old one, to be able to craft a new one.
Could you craft the new legendaries/precursors without having to craft any “old” ones?
(edited by Zero Day.2594)
They will NOT be awarded the 3 levels of mastery and they shouldn’t want to be!
Players who already have precursors can still pursue those mastery tracks to get their 1-per-account crafted precursor in addition to the one they already have.
Okay, yeah thought so.
Can you explain why they shouldn’t be?
So, from my understand the first 3 levels of the legendary mastery guide you through crafting a precursor for an “old” legendary. After level 3 of the legendary mastery you will be able to craft the new legendaries/precursors.
Would the folks that already have legendaries be awarded the first 3 levels of the mastery since they have already “crafted” an “old” precursor/legendary? Or would they have to go through the 3 levels, craft a precursor to an “old” legendary (potentially not wanting to, since they already have the ones they want or all existing ones), just to start crafting new legendary/precursors?
To me it makes sense that the first 3 “guidance” levels of the mastery should be awarded to those that already have a legendary. They’ve already gone through some sort of “journey”, they may not want to craft an old legendaries/precursors and will be doing so just to be able to get to craft new ones – which will feel more like a chore for them then those that don’t have a legendary.

A brief lookover of my post history would reveal that i am an avid warrior player, its all i’ve been playing in this game. My warrior and all his builds, from all in rifle burst, to dull shoutbow- even duel mace.
I was astonished when i played thief for the first time today with d/p.
First off it took a bit of getting used to not having weapon cool-downs. It was awesome. I could just sit there and spam heartseeker as if its an i-win button, my only counter being endure pain skills.
I didn’t really worry about the bow too much, it seems like a weak weapon but the mobility of it is INSANE- endless supply of blink? Thank you very much!
My invisibility skills felt like cheating. Heck- the moment i felt threatened id just throw down a shadow refuge and it was amazing how many people would give up looking for me.
TBH the damage output here is what i’ve been trying to push out of warrior for some time now- rifle burst pushing the limits but being insanely unreliable. But this? This is crazy, i feel like i just started playing a 1up profession. It’s my first day with it, and already i’m scoring top 3 on my team several games in a row.
Hard to play? Not really- i could work on some timings and cooldowns but tbh the overall survival mechanics and reliance of cooldowns on my warrior made that WAY harder than this profession.
I wouldn’t say Shortbow is useless, It’s used more for range aoe/poison on downed
players to slow revives on the other team etc. You can also use it to kite while you’re low on initiative. And Heartseeker spam is TRASH, never use it unless your foe is below
20-30% health (and even then only use it once or twice.). Use backstabs, they’re way more effective.
Do elaborate on “You can also use it to kite while you’re low on initiative.”
I feel like I’m missing something…
Dodging is for the good players, with fast reflexes, and heavenly internet connection which is the top 1% of the Thief community. What about the other 99%? Or those who are bad in playing Thief, with slow reflexes, and dial-up internet connection? What about them?
Let’s be real here, out of 100 players playing in PvP there’s only one Thief, this means, not everyone will become an eSport celebrity. Besides they’re the ones taking money from us through their winnings, while we (the 99%) are the ones making sure that ArenaNet employees still have jobs with our vanity pet, musical instruments, and wardrobe collections. Let’s set the priority straight. If ArenaNet cater to the bad players, with bad reflexes, and bad connections — there will be more player representing Thief in the tournament. Think of diversity.
I’m not sure if that would be a good or a bad idea.
On one side it would be embarrassing to be represented by some of the people…
But on the other side, maybe it will make everyone clue in or easy up on the nerfs and thinking that thieves are through the roof OP.I doubt it would be embarrassing since even those who have no clue how to play a Thief will own anyone. It would be glorious.
As kittenty as it is for people with dial-up/walmart connections, my sympathy doesn’t extend beyond that, as it’s their choice to continue to play under those conditions.
Like in LoL, I always find it weird when people would make lagging their excuse, or say it’s “bad manner” to kill someone when they d/c or lagging out. Sorry buddy, you’ve set foot in an arena, probably well knowing the limitation of your connection, I’m just here to kill you and win. That’s exactly what the OP is talking about. That Rifle Warrior is rude. Since internet connection varies from region to region, ArenaNet needs to put a fail safe system so that players with bad connections won’t be kitten in a 300vs300 or 500vs500 WvW siege.
And I agree that giving Thief a damage buff (i.e. 14K backstab) to compensate for their squishiness is the most sound and logical approach.
Oh… man… I completely forgot what this thread is about past, page 2… Sorry I tend to get (literally and figuratively) lost past the first 1-3 pages.
But yes. I agree with you, especially with the last line, and how things lead up to that. Yup. 14k backstabs sound nice…
god… where did this thread end up….

Yeah, rifle on thief would be dumb. Has it even been confirmed?
No official confirmation.
As much as we all would hope it’s either a rifle or a GS. It might also be the torch.
Necro is already getting the GS. But yes, it’s not “official” per se.
But this is very convincing;
Yeah, that a guardian is/might be getting a bow.
We’re assuming that two classes can’t get the same weapon. As in, since the necro is getting the GS, we’re assuming and ruling out that it’s possible for us to get a GS.
Do you know if there’s a guess on who’s getting the torch? Because if I see a torch on another class, I will fully follow that assumption and belief that no two classes can get the same weapon, and settle on a rifle instead of a GS at that point.

You might not want the extra stolen item in some situations. Like an extra Throw Gunk….
What you don’t like conditionpaloza?
That someone that has the brain capacity of at least an empty spoon would know not to stand in it.
Despite people making QQ threads about thieves, there are still those that know how to deal with them.
uhm, guys, i really think this is just a parody of this moron and his thread:

We have something similar, except it’s partially a “parody” and partially people actually requesting/wanting/wishing these nerfs:

You might not want the extra stolen item in some situations. Like an extra Throw Gunk….
Another aside…
I guess I was kind of provoked by Kount’s thread recent, since that kind of thread comes up often. Problem is/was that no one maintained or contributed to them…
Geiir tried to undertake a giant task on his own, as in he was writing a guide, people could pitch in but he would have to add it to the guide.
This list, hopefully, will be maintained at the very list by me (at my discretion… ) and others have the freedom to contribute to it while following a general format/theme that will make this list of advice/tips/tricks feel like a large community effort.
Yes, this is slightly unlike of my persona on the forums.

What: Race choice for a thief
Advice: The differences are size, appearance, and animations. Asuras, being smaller, have smaller animations for your opponent to spot, and you can more easily see your target over your head. Standard models in ranked arenas addressed the former, but it’s still the case in WvW, hot join and unranked PvP. As for the latter, the recent camera changes allow you to position your camera higher, so you can better see over your head on any race. Another point about the size is obstructions. For example, the mine cart on the mine point on Legacy of the Foefire can be stood behind to obstruct other players’ attacks. On an asura, a ranger’s longbow skills won’t hit you because you’re the same height as the cart. On a human, you would get hit unless you make yourself lower by, for example, using the /sleep command.
So it comes down to:
- How the enemy sees you in PvE, WvW, hot join, and unranked PvP.
- Sleight advantage regarding low height obstructions with asuras.
- The difference of animations between the two races.
- The appearance options they have, and how you want to look.
Thread: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/thief/race-can-t-decide/first#post4910866
Noticed this question cropping up a few times…
So, the nerf wish list, seems “successful”. And the change list, not so much, though to be fair not many would want to rework/change the class, probably only those in the thief community – and I’m sure they’ve had their ideas, that I’ve failed to recompile/find into the list.
Anyways, I’ve noticed, there’s been a few of requests for advice, builds and such in the past for days. Unfortunately the stickies kind of suck, and the information is all over the place…
So, I think I will start compiling a list of advice/tips/tricks…. Format is basically the same-ish.

I think “advice” is more or less of a correct word to use, even when you might be posting builds and such. Giving advice can be optional, you can just link a build (like below) and not give advice for it, though that would suck in the case of link. Or you might be linking another advice/tricks thread, no need to really recompile it and put it in the advice, just link the thread.
So for instance a build post would be something like…

Advice: Here’s an old D/D stealth-based build in terms of weapons, skills and traits. As for gear in WvW I don’t know, but I’d imagine a mix of cavalier and valkyrie for the crit damage to work with hidden killer, and maybe a few knights or berserker pieces to up your crit chance a bit when not attacking from stealth. Again those utilities can be swapped a bit. Signet of Shadows, Signet of Agility, Shadow Trap, Roll for Initiative are all possibilities.
Thread: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/thief/New-thief-2/first#post4901133
Those are some real examples, I will recompile some more… Ugh, please if you can/want to help and contribute like with the nerf counterpart.
I will recompile some more to give you guys some examples to follow. If anything, I will just correct your post/repost it and either there will be duplicates (not really an issue) or one of us will just delete their post. So, don’t be shy.
This is kind of a harder list to make, since there’s no clear cut on what’s good/bad advice… so yeah if you guys contribute it will be a bit easier.
So yeah, let’s see how this goes.

Please, please, please tell me this was you trying to gather proof of how “awesome” HS spam is while I was screwing around on my warrior.
That’s clearly a noob thief. Yup. Running a wrong build. Otherwise HS is awesome, used by an average player.
(above is my predicted response to your response maug…. )
lol…
Oh guys did you see how he was moving around when the thief went into stealth…. wow such counter much skills. Something rarely seen.
But yeah… why was he spamming HS out of stealth (i’m guessing it expired/was close to expiry – hey probably due to the warrior moving the kitten around, see how it’s a counter) on a full health target… wtf? He really is a baddie for doing that.
Oh another thing to note about the warrior walking around, notice how he keeps facing the direction in which the thief has stealthed from… so as he’s moving around back and forth, there’s a higher chance of him facing the thief and the thief being in front of him and not behind him… so even if the thief attempts to backstab it might turn out to be a “frontstab” dealing much less damage… But yeah, this flies way over some peoples heads.
(edited by Zero Day.2594)
Thief need more buffs than nerfs guys, wake up.
What game are you playing? You can never nerf Thief enough.
Clearly not Nerf Wars 2.

Would it shoot dinosaurs, too?
It would shoot shotguns out of it that shoot 8 daggers from them.
Daggers what were simultaneously both electric and on fire. They would also explode on impact.
…and release nanomites that will eat your target’s brain. Then you can mind control them ones your target suffered multiple nanomite infection.
Hope the devs are taking notes. Infact, let the nanomites cause the target to /say our buff, bug fix and new skill requests as well as send the devs mail before they self destruct the target’s entire body. For example an infected player would say “Fix Last Refuge!” in chat while running towards their ally and then exploding and killing them both.
I was actually thinking along the line of making them dance naked but dang!…you’re evil. You make me feel like a zombie infecting my target with zombie worms then they explodes as the worms multiplies from the inside…and it’s lunch time too — gee, thanks.
And of courses, us being thieves, the infected targets will send us gold by mail
. Along with w/e else is valuable.

Why: An AOE ability to stealth and heal the thief and his allies for many seconds is pretty strong and overkill.
Suggestion: I suggest making it a bit more challenging by disallowing dodges/evades while in the refuge. No dodging or evading allowed if the thief or his allies are standing in the refuge. This allows enemies to land a successful attempt to draw them out of the refuge.
What: shadow step
Why: instant cast and such a long range with stun break and condi cleanse makes this kind of cheesy.
Suggestion: I suggest either reducing the range to 600 so that enemies will generally still be able to react, or remove the condi cleanse on return part.
What: hide in shadows
Why: a skill that heals and allows the thief to go invis and cures burning poison and bleeding on top of the healing makes things too easy for a thief.
Suggestion: I suggest increasing the casting duration to 1.5 seconds
What: Withdraw
Why: another no brainer healing skill that gives evade and mobility which should be made harder to use.
Suggestion: I suggest including a casting duration of 1 sec instead of letting it be instant.
What: Infiltrator strike
Why: Such a high mobility skill should not be allowed to cure one condition upon return as well at such low initiative costs.
Suggestion: I suggest increasing the initiative costs by 1 for initial cast and return cast as well.
What: Black powder
Why: A skill that allows a thief to combo and stealth off is already very devastating. Add a blind to it and that is like what???
Suggestion: I suggest removing the blind or not allowing the stealth. Either way works.
What: Pistol Whip
Why: Even though the range is small, but seriously, stun and evade in one skill at 5 initiatives?
Suggestion: I suggest making it 6. or even 7 initiative cost. and that would only make it just nice.
What: Shadow’s Embrace
Why: For an adept trait, removing 1 to 2 condis every time you stealth is way overkill.
Suggestion: I suggest changing it to regeneration instead upon entering stealth. Gives the thief some nice extra healing while he is invis.

Welcome….
To the nerf wish list!
Started to re-compile them into the wish list format…. yeah buddy you’re definitely a troll. Still, going to add your requests to the list.
Yeah definitely a troll…
…
Now the thief’s traits I don’t have much issues with. Quite fair and even for their traits. Except maybe with all those reworks above the traits might have to be revisited. So lets look at a few of those more problematic ones.
1) Panic Strike
Immobilize for so long with only a 20sec cooldown…this I can let slide…but seriously I will suggest making it a 90sec cooldown but make it immobilize on 25% health. You know, at that point its a sure kill for the thief when you immobilize the enemy at 25%. and maybe also give it 3 stacks of might when the enemy is at 25% health.
…
Like if the rest of your post wasn’t suggestive enough to indicate that you’re a troll. that little portion gives it away. All your “reworks” are in the negative/nerf direction of things, so they can’t warrant a “rework” of another skill in the same negative direction. Like none of your “reworks” actually benefit Panic Strike enough to warrant a nerf to it. You’re basically saying “and since i’ve nerfed things, i should nerf more things because of that”. I like it though, it shows you put a bit of thought into this, since yeah triggering the ability at 25% and given might does make seem like it’s a nice thing… though that’s a “higher” threshold to reach… and on a 90 second CD…. hmmm…. Adding 1 more point to your score.
Sorry you’re trolling attempt is only 4/10 3/10.
It shares many of the qualities of normal QQ posts, and will slip by most people and start heated discussion like other QQ posts.
But you’re so obvious.

I just power leveled a Thief 1-80 under a few minutes this week to get a better idea how this profession works in WvW.
It’s a pretty easy profession to play well, and won almost every encounter I came across except a really good mesmer that had me running…I ran, healed, and came back for the kill. The mesmer would have had me, cd’s won that fight is all.
I played as a d/p-d/d, and d/p-sb build (0,6,6,2,0 zerk/valk), unless my target was built for support it was a pretty easy mark. Support just used gap closers and boons to run away past my cd’s. The Thief has so many good offensive power, utility, and escape in these traits makes me jelly.
With that said I wish my main (Ranger) had half of this survivability as a non zerg play profession outside of some tank cond build. I wouldn’t complain if Sic’em got changed to a AOE flare that reveals like the WoW Hunter got to help counter.
I just made a ranger and leveled him in 1 day too. I won all my encounters with ease and only died to zergs.
I didn’t even need to think about what i was doing while winning either
OMG. I had the same experience with a ranger. I think we should go on the PvP forums and post about this imbalance and how OP rangers are.
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/thief/Thief-Tricks-and-Tips-1/first
A bit of general tips in there.
p/p is not in the meta, so you will struggle competitively . But still you can run it and have fun. Like I know Vincent runs it in WvW, I’ve tried it in WvW (zerg’ing) and found it interesting. Even used it in (PvE) Silverwastes. You want ricochet (trait), signet of malice (healing skill) or withdrawal, and probably roll for initiative (skill) to spam unload.
Don’t worry though, because your playing a thief, your build is automatically cheesy, skill-less, and OP – to some.
Beginning to have an urge to create a “Beginners List” … Real life doesn’t permit me to do so atm though. Lurking too much, makes you see patterns of different discussion brought up often.
Like everyone wants to nerf the thief, hence that list got created. Lately there’s been 1-2 people a week asking for (various) advice/tips – a new list can be born…

What if rifle was a one handed weapon on thief
?!?!?!?!?!?
Only if the rifle is using lasers instead of bullets so there won’t be any recoil.
Or, you could just let the recoil go and spry the bullets everywhere.
I have the Asura as my gun manufacturer…I don’t buy Charr.
Ever played Borderlands 2? The mechromancer has an anarchy build where you just don’t even need to aim to kill things.
If the laser’s beam is large enough, I don’t think you really need to aim.
Or a rifle to shoot with it seems.

You missed out (or did you?) on “Balance” forums back when it was around…
They still have an archived version though.

Um, some people want longer or permanent reveal.
God forbid you shave off the 1 second, do you know or can you image how many cries there would be on the forums? I would not being able enjoy all the tears, there would be just too many.
Gives me warm thoughts just thinking about all those delicious tears….

I just finished my first ever spvp match of unranked using a lvl 1 thief i made. here’s the result. i didn’t even read all the tooltips for the skills, or even did my amulet/traits. simply used my lvl 2 reward dagger and bought a shortbow from the mists vendor.

gg everyone.
That picture tells very little, to say the least.
It would have been nice if the picture showed the opposing team, and who won (500 score). Otherwise that picture just says that at some point in time you had 8 kills and was 2nd best on the team.
But yeah, good job.

Or large/two-handed balisongs…. Pretty sure large ones are legit, not sure on the historical aspect of large balisongs. Pretty sure they were made as kind of scrapped-together weapons.
:D Who am I kidding. I’ll probably be a revenant after the expansion drops. Check out their traits and weapon skills, they can hurl hammers with 1200 range. Yes, 1200 range, flying, hammers. While here we are struggling to shoot an arrow that far. Oh and from the skill description it seems the hammer goes through the enemies in a line…
