Re-Release GW2!

Ok, let me rephrase:
I logged in, saw what saw, and left again.

Have you checked their list of what should have been in the game already?
Since NCSoft got bought, EVERY decision they made was bullkitten…

Which is ok for you to leave again, just wait longer if needs be, but there are still millions who still play this game, and the populations have been growing as stated by Arenanet about 1 week ago.

Just close down the game for a while, add all the features that were promised at !Release! – then and only then release it again.

As it is now, the game is full of broken promises..

Or, you can just not play till the game gets to the point that you want it to be, while the rest of us get to enjoy the game we are already enjoying.

Karma jugs, and Laurels character bound...

If it was per-character, then the system would effectively force you to play on ALL of your characters (and punish those with less slots who intend on getting more in the future). It would be extremely unfriendly to alt users because alts are made so you can play what you feel like doing, but if it was all character-bound then you’d basically be forced to play all of them, whether or not you feel like playing that class at the time.

So you then you would not mind Karma should have been account bound and only gain X amount of Karma each day, and if it took 3+ years to gear up 5 characters despite how much time and effort you put into the game?

But because it takes so long to gear up your alts, you are then forced to play your most powerful character as to not gimp the rest of your party, even though you would rather play a different but weaker character. If you are able to gear up all your alts at the same time, you then have a lot more choices on what character you want to play without gimping yourself.

The current system limits your choices as is. It is only 1 character at a time friendly, and not multiple character friendly at all, it entices people to concentrate on 1 character since they only get rewarded for use on 1 character at a time. Instead of playing multiple characters and getting rewarded for multiple characters at the same time. The current system is just rewarding 1 character at a time.

I guess you guys would not mind if Karma became account bound, and you could only earn X amount of Karma each day. Have 5 characters that you want Karma Exotic gear on? Welp, guess you are going to wait 3+ years to get all of them geared up, no matter how much time you can put into the game.

I have alts and would hate it if the karma and rewards were character bound. As it is now, I can save up karma jugs/dungeon rewards/badges/laurels and then decide to give them all to one particular alt when I want something for them. How is this alt-unfriendly in any way?

Because it artificially prolongs gearing up alts. Have 5 characters in all? Going to take 15 months to get Rings/Amulet from Laurels, instead of taking 3 months for all 5 characters if Monthly/Daily and Laurels were character bound. Becomes even worse if you are someone who cannot play everyday.

Precursor trend

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: eisberg.2379

eisberg.2379

I think pre cursors being in the 500g range is fine, the fact that they were ever cheaper is more of a problem in my view. Legendarys should be hard to make, everything is pretty easy to obtain so there needs to be something that is difficult about it, and thats where the high priced pre cursor comes in. I hope they remain high and Arenanet never start handing out welfare precursors, because the day every causal has a legendary will be sad day.
I’m sorry if this sounds elitist, I do not mean it to, although I know many will take it that way, I just have a firm view that legendarys should actually be hard to obtain.

But they’re not hard to obtain. There is absolutely no skill barrier between you and a “legendary”, only a time barrier, because you need only gather a large number of resources. I’m by no means a great player, as WvW often reminds me, but I’m already almost a quarter of the way there myself. Does it really show off how amazingly talented I am? Well, no, not one bit. My prediction, in fact, is that a few years from now, most of the people still playing likely will have at least one so-called “legendary”, and they’ll be so common that people will be starting to use other skins just to feel different.

If you want them to be less common, you shouldn’t be looking at the price tags, because price isn’t a permanent barrier. You should be looking to implement a skill-based challenge system to restrict the flow of precursors, thereby making sure that only people who are truly talented at the game can even get one.

The problem with skill based, is that all it takes is some practice and everyone can do it, and it would be fun to do. Really, the only way to make sure that not everyone can get a legendary, is to make it a really boring to get for most people. Lets be honest, the only true barrier to getting a legendary is whether one deems it fun to do a major rng grind, or don’t mind doing that kind of grind despite it might be boring to them.

TLDR: Make it fun to get, everyone will get it.

Why Hate on RNG?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

eisberg.2379

Some of us are naturally unlucky when it comes to RNG. Take WoW for instance, there was a quest where one had to kill Yeti’s till one of them dropped a staff to turn in to the quest giver. I did that quest probably 8 times, and it never took less then 75 kills to get it, and as much as 400 kills, where as others in my guild would get it with in 10 kills.

I don’t know what it is, but for some of us, the universe hates us, so we get a lot of back luck when it comes to RNG, we tend to get more back luck then the average person.

Something I miss from GW1.

Alts already have to start from scratch with the current system. Buy something with laurels and they are gone, for all your characters, and what you bought is only for 1 character. People who only want to play 1 character shouldn’t feel forced into playing more then 1 character. But people who like to play more then 1 character may feel forced to concentrate on 1 character only and not playing any of their alts because of the current system, there by making less population in the leveling up zones.

Right now the current system is very alt unfriendly. What I think is a good idea is to make the daily, monthly, karma jugs, and Laurels all character bound, that way if people want to play more then 1 character, they can earn Karma Jugs and Laurels for each of their characters and put in the same amount of effort on each of their characters and gain the same reward.

This would also entice people to play alts, there by populating the leveling up zones, since they know that playing alts are not gimped in any way, since their alts can earn karma jugs and laurels as well and not just 1 of their characters.

Laurels. Thoughts?

The biggest issue I have with this:

1 -it’s per account rather than per character.
Anyone who has more than one toon is given a big fat middle-finger by ANet.

2 – you have no real choice in what shows up on your dailies or monthlies. Don’t like them, tough.

3 – you have no way to do multiples on one toon or one account if you happen to have the time. At least in the other titles ANet scoffs at, you can do as many dailies as you want.

This is nothing but artificial kitten-blocking.

Well, I think that is ok, because on the flipside people who do not wish to play multiple characters would feel left behind.

Why would they feel left behind? If they are only interested in playing 1 character, why would they feel left behind when someone is playing more then 1 character? What does it matter if someone is gearing up 1 character or gearing up more then 1 character? Seriously, your comment above makes absolutely zero sense, there is zero logic in it.

I quit WoW 6 years ago (after playing for 2 years), and tried to play a few MMOs since then, but never made it beyond 60 days, haven’t touched another MMO in about 4 years till Guild Wars 2 came out. Been playing Guild Wars 2 since the game released, and have never felt bored of the game.

So for me, Guild Wars 2 brought me back into MMO gaming, but I will never play an MMO that is more like WoW. Any MMO from here on out will have to take lessens from Guild Wars 2, and be an evolution from Guild Wars 2.

The problem is that not only is this incredibly rude, your armor still gets damaged because you’re considered in combat. So while someone is purposely killing you while you went off to get a drink or what have you, you’re paying for it in silver.

On top of that, yesterday while leveling in The Blood Fields with some guild mates, we were getting yelled at for killing the skelks that were attacking the NPCs. All we wanted was to complete our renown heart and we ended up being harassed by level 80 players.

I don’t mind this daily requirement. What I do mind is the attitude people are developing because of it. It’s seriously not that hard to go run fractals or a dungeon or two and complete that part of the daily.

You armor only gets damaged if you rez at a way point. If you get rezed by a player, then you take no armor damage.

A client for Linux

It’s only a small step from a client for Mac to a client for Linux. Take notice ArenaNet. Linux is the future in operating systems.

Linux the future in operating systems? That is highly unlikely, and there are many many reasons why it is highly unlikely. People were saying the same about OpenGL, and look what happened there, hardly anyone uses it other then cheap indie games.

I’m sure if Arenanet feels they can actually make a profit from having a Linux version, they would do it.

Actually, a shi tload of games uses OpenGL : Brink, Starcraft II (and all Blizzard’s games actually), all Valve’s games, Neverwinter Nights, Amnesia, Doom 3, Deus Ex, Heroes of Newerth, City of heroes, City of Vilains, Far Cry, Hitman, Homeworld 2, Max Payne, Oil Rush, Penumbra series, Quake series, Red Faction, Spore, Stronghold, Serious Sam series, Wolfenstein series and so many more I can’t remember them all but they’re far from “cheap indie games”.

Notice how the vast majority of the games you mentioned are very old? Blizzard who take forever to bring out a new game, Valve who take forever to bring out a new game, and IDSoft who take forever to bring out a new game are really the only big names that use it, and then a few others. OpenGL is no where being used as much as it used to be. For the most part, indie games are the ones that use it the most, but for AAA games, yeah, OpenGL is on life support.

Thats hardly an sign that openGl is on supposed lifesupport, infact opengl run faster than directx and opengl is capable of doing anything that direcx is. direcx is used more because of microsoft business practices and clever marketing. You suppose the coding guru carmack uses opengl cuz its inferior? hardly! Idsoft isn’t as much about making games as they are creating new tech and game engines with more advanced features than most others.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MegaTexture
http://www.extremetech.com/gaming/133824-valve-opengl-is-faster-than-directx-even-on-windows

I didn’t say it was inferior, not sure where you got that from. What I did say is that OpenGL is basically being kept alive by indie developers, and then very few other developers, with the biggest ones that take a very long time to release a game.

Anyways, the point is for years people have been saying that Linux is the future for PC OS and or for PC gaming, yet is has barely broke any ground, again just a few big developers, and mostly indie developers who do anything with it. Linux only has 1% of PC OS market share http://www.tomshardware.com/news/linux-windows-microsoft-android-ios,20220.html

We’ll see if Valve can actually make Linux into something more serious competitor, but personally I am not expecting more then just Valve games, indie games, and a few games here and there for Steam Linux. I can see how it can be profitable to have a Steam client for Linux games because of the indie games alone, but for a developer of a game like Guild Wars 2, that profit margin just may not be there, but that is for Arenanet to decide based on their own research.

DirectX usually offers better performance on Windows, which is to be expected from the officially supported / recommended API. Most commercial game engines (UE3, CryEngine, Unity, etc) support multiple rendering backends, but use DirectX on Windows for that very simple reason.

Also, it’s my personal opinion that Linux has only become ready for average desktop use quite recently, and it’s not quite there for gaming. Desktop Linux is undergoing massive changes right now (systemd, kernelspace D-Bus, DRM2 and DRI-Next, Wayland), and with Windows 8 there is a real incentive to switch for many.

What specifically is wrong with Windows 8? I am using it, and to me it is no difference for Gaming then Windows 7. Windows 8 feels like Windows 7 with Metro.

In game population wise, you’ll be excited to know login numbers and peak concurrency numbers have been slowly going up or staying consistent depending on the day going on 6 weeks in a row now. We’re very excited to see that =)

Someone said it was counting my PvP gear, and I didn’t even know I had PvP gear since I never do any PvP at all. So I headed to the Heart of the Mists, unequiped all the gear in there, came back out of the mists, and my set bonus on my PvE gear activated. Because I didn’t want to store that PvP stuff, I destroyed all my PvP gear.

So apparently there is a bug where the game thinks I was wearing 2 sets of those runes and would not give me the bonus, not until I unequiped my PvP gear in the Mists.

He bought the game at the beginning of January, and canceled his SWTOR account. It is now February and he is considering on buying some gems to create a 6th character.

So yes, having Guest passes would be a fantastic thing to have in this game, it will help with increasing their sales and player base.

Just bought game - want to change server

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Because not only should each character be independently able to choose which server they want to play on, but if you make a character on a wrong server, you shouldn’t be forced to go out and buy a new $60 game or a $20 game pass (which is only $10 less than I paid for the game) to fix the error.

Something as important as a once-in-a-lifetime decision to choose your server is simply too large a decision to make for a player starting out for the first time. Perhaps if you had to level to 10 to get off some newbie island and once you left the newbie island you chose your server and were stuck with it, fine.

But how many people out there bought the game because a friend told them it was awesome and in your eagerness to join them, you forgot to ask which server they played on. Thinking the problem can be corrected, you just make an character to see how the game works with the intention of remaking when your friend comes home from work only to find out your SOL because you made a life-altering decision 30 seconds after you installed the game and before you could even decide what kind of character you wanted to make.

That’s why it’s poor game design and shows a complete lack of concern for the playerbase. It’s the kind of error a new game designer makes… like when you were in highschool and your teacher told you to make a tic-tac-toe game and you coded for every possibility except for if there was a tie and you forced them to shut down the game and restart it.

Novice game design showing no foresite whatsoever. Something you’d expect from someone taking their first programming or game design 101 class.

So Delete you characters so that you have none created and swap server?

That doesn’t work

I would have to say that if the game is only 3 days old, just create a toon an a different server. You couldn’t have possibly gotten too far in the game.

If you just started then just make a new character on a new server, 3 days lost advancement isnt worth the crazy prices to switch servers IMO.

He can’t do that, once you choose your home server, where you create your first character, all your characters after that automatically are on that server as well. He needs a server transfer. You cannot create characters on different servers, your account is set to 1 server.

They need to make a better LFG system so that people don’t need to be standing around in LA looking for a group. Let people be out playing in the open world while they are looking for a group.

They don’t need a reason to visit other cities, they need a reason to be out in the open world while waiting for a group to be made.

I like this idea, it is what World of Warcraft does. Just so you know, one of the biggest reason why people say that idea is bad is because it “ruins” community.

1800 Gems is an appropriate price for transferring to a very high server, for the reasons already stated.

…. 1800 gems is barely anything for a server transfer. It’s not like you are server hopping, it’s a one time thing. Surprised you are even complaining cause that is like the least of anyone’s worries.

Also, I don’t see implementing a cost in server transfers as a revenue scheme. This is just there to prevent people from server hopping which is good imo.

Hardly anything? It’s about £15-20 which is about half the cost of an entire game or two months subs of a paid MMO.

I know server transfers were always intended to be paid service, and actually support that. But £15 is an order of magnitude over priced.

Yet lower priced then the industry standard. If it was at industry standard for transfers, it would cost 2400 Gems. Like said, it is only 1800 Gems for very high servers, it gets lower for less populated servers, which is something that is not industry standard. Plus not to mention the games with subs still charge for transfers, and are higher price then GW2.

I took a break a month ago due to being bored of the same old, same old tPvP maps and team comps. I thought I would come back today and see if I could regain some interest.

While I was away, my guild transferred to a new server. And now apparently it will cost me 1800 gems to follow them. That’s an extortionate price for something that used to be free. It can’t possibly reflect the effort required by Anet to perform the transfer.

So now I will leave because (a) I cannot play with my friends and (b) Anet have just shown themselves to be either a lot more desperate for revenue or a lot less caring of their players than I thought.

Can you have my stuff? Yes you can. Enjoy your 2 silver pieces and ball of fluff.

Except for it was been known since before the game was going to release that Transfers were going to cost shortly after the game released. They started it off being free to let people move around and get settled, but then there was an issue with their guesting feature and they didn’t want to start charging for transfers till the Guesting feature was ready. They even talked about the possible pricing before the game launched, and it was always going to be a high price to transfer to a very high server, and a low price to transfer to a low server.

This was not a desperate act, it was in fact something that has always been planned and talked about since before the game launched. Also, it is healthy for the WvWvW portion of the game to charge for transfers, otherwise people will just move around to the winning servers.
