To put it another way. If ANet supports breast cancer awareness month, but not prostate cancer awareness month, what is that saying?

Who says they do not? Also any company cannot support every worthy cause out there, they have to pick and choose.

This isn’t a mandatory thing. It is a private event held in game for those who wish to partake. No one is required to participate or donate or support. I honestly don’t care who holds private events for anything. That is their prerogative.

However this is a medical issue, not a religious or military one. It is something that affects all races, creeds, religions, cultures, and countries. I really don’t understand how you can make comparisons of cancer issues to religious or military ones.

If they kept it to private chat, then I suppose that wouldn’t bother me.

The comparison is to illustrate how easy it is to justify something. I could make the argument that because most people are on American servers, that the war affects them all. I could say that because a very high percentage of Americans identify with a certain religion, that there is enough evidence to support a “rally.”

Again, I just want people to be aware and conscious of what affect these things may have in the context of a game.

Still, I think you are missing the point. Those things are military and religious. I know of no one who would support either of them in game. I am also sure that ANet would not allow it. This has no political or religious connotations.

As far as chat goes, I see things in Say Chat and Map Chat that make my skin crawl. This I completely object to. But that is a public channel and anyone can say what they want. So if someone wants to rally ANYTHING they can do so.

And as was said before, most companies choose one to several causes they wish to support and that is their prerogative. The company I work for supports Make A Wish Foundation, the American Cancer Society, and our local food pantry. It is a matter of goodwill. I really and honestly feel bad that you do not see the difference.

In the context of this game, I think this sort of thing is amazing. I don’t see it as a catalyst for many other rallies and such. I see it as a company and gamers who care about more than the game they are playing. It is a bonding thing between gamers and that never hurts anything.

How does wearing pink help awareness? How does putting pink pixels on an in game character help awareness? Its dumb when the NFL does it, and even worse in a video game. It is a fad, and people think wearing a color helps. HINT: It doesn’t.

Want to really help? Donate to Cancer research. Want to help even more? Set up a folding @ home pc. Or just jump on the pink fad, and try to make it seem like you are “helping”.

It’s good to raise awareness. However, the charity that has spearheaded this whole “pink” thing has some very suspect business practices.

Are you kidding me? This is an individual that spearheads this event. Her name is Rhonda. If you click on the donate button on the Pink Day in LA website it takes you directly to the Canadian Cancer Society’s website. Unless you are saying that the CCS has suspect business practices, which is preposterous, why would you make such a statement?

On one hand I think this is a cool idea, but on the other I’m not entirely convinced this is the best thing to be doing.

The reason is that there are many causes out there that people feel passionate about. The problem of course is that those passions aren’t always felt the same by everyone involved.

So, while most people might be perfectly ok with supporting breast cancer month, they may not be as ok with a “support the troops” or a religious cause.

I think everyones heart is in the right place, but I think we need to be very careful about bringing real world politics, causes, and such into a game with a varied community.

In addition, I don’t feel that we should entertain any charity or money exchanging. There is simply too much room for abuse.

This isn’t a mandatory thing. It is a private event held in game for those who wish to partake. No one is required to participate or donate or support. I honestly don’t care who holds private events for anything. That is their prerogative.

Pink day in LA does raise money for cancer research. That’s part of function. Go to their website and see. But as far as raising awareness, the pink day in LA people often get asked why everyone is in pink and it is a chance to tell others who may not know or are involved with raising money for cancer research can find out about it and GET involved.

Your clear vehemence is really uncalled for. People are trying to do good things and you are mocking them for it? That is small and petty.

I am involved with the American Cancer Society and work year around to help raise money for cancer research. It has been proven that even just wearing cancer awareness shirts has an effect.

Pink Day in LA has raised tens of thousands of dollars by using this venue and having people wear pink in game. ANet supports it. They don’t deserve your rudeness, they deserve your respect for what they have accomplished through Pink Day in LA.

Drakkon, we aren’t confused as to how or why things are the way they are, we are disagreeing with them. We do not require a lecture on the facts- we’ve got those down, and now we’ve moved on to formulating and expressing opinions. You’re missing the point.

+1 Aaron Ansari. Drakkon, It doesn’t matter how many forums you read or how much you think you know about the way this game was developed. None of that matters. And Aaron is absolutely correct, we certainly don’t need a lecture about any of it either.

We have the right to express what we would like to see in the game moving forward which is more lore connected to the past. Just like all of those people who want different mechanics or different gear or anything else changed or new in the game.

As Aaron said, we are expressing opinions, not asking why Anet did anything. We are also expressing our disappointment with old lore representation. I honestly don’t care why they developed lore as they did or for your opinions on sequels. Which also are simply opinions just like ours. They are not statements of fact.

We want to see ties to the old game. It is what we want. We are expressing our desire to see those things. We are hoping developers take heed, not you.

Missing the point indeed.

Though in one of his dialogues, he admits to torturing and killing his favorite step-mom. So I doubt he was kind.

I’m not complaining about anything, how dare you accuse me.

I simply stated the fact that this isn’t constructive.

It isn’t constructive to YOU maybe. But that isn’t how it was phrased. You just put it out there as a universal fact. Also you stating that it wasn’t constructive is constructive how?

Say what you want, but telling the OP that what he/she wrote isn’t constructive is just a veiled complaint about him/her posting what they did. And you with your horse comment to me is just another veiled complaint about what I said because you didn’t like my reaction to your comments.

What you said isn’t constructive either.

Me bringing up the topic of being constructive reminds everyone to be constructive, and thus was somewhat constructive.

Agree with knote plus one to knote !!!

I don’t think you understand that your opinion is not a statement of fact but opinion. I feel the OP’s statement was very constructive in my opinion. Therefore your statement is wrong. The OP’s statement is indeed constructive to some people, just not you. It reminds us that we need to give ANet (or anyone) props when they deserve them and that people who give them props shouldn’t be hated on like they always are on this forum.

To use your own argument against you, what I said is constructive because it reminds people that their opinions are just that, their opinions and nothing more. Your statement on whether this or any post is constructive or not is not fact, but opinion. I find it very humorous that you try to rationalize your statement as a constructive reminder when it was obviously meant as an insult. Your first reply to me finished with an insult. These are not constructive things, they are just rude.

And Xephire, what do you agree with him on? That his opinion is constructive and the OP’s or mine are not? Do agree with him that his statements of opinion are factual and that everyone should agree with him? I honestly don’t care if you don’t agree with me, but I do find that you giving him props for being rude in the first place is both funny and sad.

You mean if someone gives a compliment, it isn’t constructive? Telling someone you like what they did doesn’t help them keep motivated to keep doing good?.

No, but starting a thread by telling other players to buzz off is not the most constructive thing I’ve seen on a game forum.

I agree, but I have seen many, many more hater threads that say in different ways, “If you don’t agree with me you are wrong.”

Add to that, when anyone says anything good on these forums, they are ridiculed beyond belief. The OP was probably just trying to head the hate off at the pass.

I suppose if it isn’t complaining, people don’t see it as constructive. I can certainly see how people get jaded by reading all the negativity on these forums.

No, just a stab at those that say complainers aren’t constructive, that’s all. You should give your horse a break. =p

And you might want to pick up your bucket of rocks and step out of your glass house.

And BTW, it isn’t complainers that are the problem, it is people that are snide and hateful when they complain. They are not constructive, helpful, or useful in any way. Especially those that seem to do nothing but complain. You for example.

Yes, we know the numbers. The sales for GW2 has been announced at 3.5 million lately. This is also the number of accounts (so, max of 3.5 million accounts). We know that the last announced sales for GW1 were over 6 million units sold. This is less that 6 million accounts, of course, as each campaign when sold separately (and not in bundle) was counted also separately (unit is a sigle digital sale, or a single box – and box can contain either a single campaign/expansion, or a bundle).

You say you know the numbers, but not who or where you obtained them. I don’t disbelieve your numbers, I just want to know where you got them. I am wanting to do a little research on the game myself, and I want to know your source so I can look it up for myself. Again, I don’t disbelieve you, but there are a lot of people throwing a lot of numbers around.

And my point is that expecting a population concerned with daily survival to care about history is neither realistic, nor something the developers are wishing to illustrate. The Priory may keep detailed records, and people who work for them will know the history of the world, keeping it safe until such time that they can disseminate it back into the general population, if ever, but the general population will neither know, nor care about, their own history, save for what they cling to as part of their coping mechanisms (re: Ebonhawke). Expecting otherwise is unrealistic.

I see that you didn’t actually read the part of my reply that said that the population at large may not know or care, but the people we are dealing with who are making calls for the fates of the general populace would. And since we are either part of the Priory or allied with it as part of the story line, we wouldn’t be part of the general population that such information would some day be disseminated back into. Again, I agreed with you that the general population may not know much about 250 years ago, but the people we interact with through our personal story would. We have access to their inner sanctums which the general populace would not. Our players, the places we go, the situations we must face, and the people we interact with have nothing to do with the “general populace.”

As for what the developers did with GW1 to GW2, that’s simple. They provided you with a world and said, here’s what’s happened, and welcome to the new world. What you expected and what you got are either the same or different based on your own anticipation, but that’s not the fault of the developers for not reading your mind and providing you with the game you wanted them to make.

How do you know what the developers had in mind for the new world? Can you read minds as you point out that they cannot? You most certainly were not a part of those closed door development discussions. You don’t know how simple or hard it was to provide this new world. You don’t actually know what reasons they had for not introducing more former lore. For that matter, you do not know what I was or was not ‘anticipating’. Don’t think that you have any grand insight on me, my desires for this game, or motivations of the developers. I didn’t expect them to read my mind and you are a tool for suggesting I did. It is my right and prerogative to be disappointed in what I didn’t see. I didn’t expect everything to be the same or expect that all I would like to see would be there. I did expect more of the old lore infused into this game either directly or passively. So did many others. It doesn’t mean that we don’t like the game or hate Anet for not doing it, it is just simple disappointment.

I think they did a lovely job on GW2, and absent a few things I would have preferred they put in from a game features standpoint, the lackluster manner they handled the armor for the Charr and Asura, and the continued failing on their part to realize that both races will remain underutilized until THEY fix them, it’s a great game. They took the GW1 world I used to play and enjoy, updated it with a fairly considerate motif that allowed for 250 years of events to occur, and then said “Well, here’s the world after all this **** happened to it. Have fun learning about it and making your way through it!” And I have. Your online experience may vary.

Well, my disappointment in lack of lore from the first game is totally understandable but your issues in Charr and Asura armor is certainly not just your opinion and should be immediately addressed. ANet is completely justified in not bringing more of the themes and story lines of GW1 into GW2, but because they did not consult you on aesthetics of the Charr and Asura, they have shot themselves in the foot until they do. If you think that your personal opinion on those things matter… …well they don’t. To that end I have a quote for you.

Expecting otherwise is unrealistic.

I am glad you like the game. I do as well but I certainly don’t need you to condescendingly ‘explain’ to me the whats, whys, and hows of GW2 development. I might have taken what you said as great counterpoint to my if it had not been presented in an all-knowing and snide way. That is OK, however. I can respond in kind when that is how I am responded to.

Ask 100 students in America today who won the French-Indian War, you’re as likely to get “France/the French”, “the Indians” as “the Confederacy”. History isn’t something people care about, even if they should.

You spend time arguing over what’s happening in a game, and how it shouldn’t happen at all, and all the while it’s happening in the real world all around you. It’s hardly a mystery as to how a culture can forget it’s heritage so quickly. America’s history is being re-written as we speak. It can happen. It has happened. It is happening right now.

I agree with you if we are talking about the population at large. But whether or not any population forgets on a large scale what has happened in history, on a smaller scale history is acknowledged in all societies. Monuments, holidays, celebrations, reenactments, themed tourists spots, and museums all contribute to history’s recognition. Most countries have these things. So I agree that more could have been infused into the game that recognizes achievements from the GW1 game.

Another thing to consider is that our characters and those we interact with should have deft knowledge of the past and its affects on current society. The Priory and The Whispers both are organizations that deal and thrive on knowledge. They are the elite knowledge and information gatherers of the current GW timeline. Still little of GW history is seen in either of their orders or the missions associated with them. With the exception of Ogden, history is not very evident in the orders either.

The final thing I would like to point out is that the goal of any sequel whether it be a game or book or movie is that the makers are relying on the retention and fandom of the originals in order to sell the sequel. The sequel almost always is a continuation of the original in some way. Much of the story that was in GW1 has been ignored IMO in GW2. So ancient histories may be ignored by societies, but GW1 was just history of less than a year and a half for me personally. I want to see that games lore heavily infused into the game I am playing now. GW1 is NOT ancient history to those of us who played it and expect to see it heavily depicted in GW2.

It remains true that there’s really no good way to compare the two.

It is also true that you tried to defend a blatant lie with arguments that were completely irrelevant to the discussion at hand.

Of course, GW2 is out for only a year, so it has still a lot of time to catch up, but claiming that it has sold 7 times GW1 copies is a flat out lie. It still has to equal it, in truth.

I’m not trying to argue, but how do you know it is a lie? You keep making this accusation but show nothing to prove that it is a lie. Do you have some real data to back this up?

If you have no evidence, then that is a pretty inflammatory and unsubstantiated accusation.

LOL, you should read my other posts…

The 250-year thing plays right into their hands when it comes to this new Tyria, I don’t think that was accidental, on the contrary, quite purposeful. It helps them break free of all those troublesome ties to the past…

I agree. The thing is, all things are built upon what happened in the past.

In the U.S. where I live, 250 years ago was a couple of decades before we were even a country and pretty much in our infancy. That being said, all the things that were going on had huge impact on what we are today. Many minor things may have been forgotten but not the big things.

In all countries, celebrations of the past are commonplace. Traditions endure even if they have evolved.

Even after 250 years, our past defines us. It certainly isn’t forgotten or non-evident.

I don’t feel forgotten as I mentioned above, but I do feel a bit neglected.

As Vayne has pointed out, there are tiny tidbits of lore here and there, but mostly it has been neglected.

Everyone and their cat can point to “What about this” and “What about that”, but GW1 lore has had very little impact on GW2 and little of it has resurfaced in any significant way. Heck, they even took all the gods away. Sheesh!!!

I know the company wants to make it new and fresh, but much of the draw for many of us long time players of GW1 was to see what they would do with the world we so loved to play in. I think many of us are disappointed at a place that seems to have forgotten it’s history and only in spare ways resembles the places and things we loved in the original game.

Again, I don’t feel forgotten, but I do feel let down by the neglect of lore.

I played Guild Wars 1 for five full years, on the PvE side. I did everything there was to do in that game. Got my GWAMM and my 50/50 in the HoM…but you know…a game can be good and not be Guild Wars 1 as well.

Sort of what I’ve been trying to say all along.

Usually I am on your side all the way Vayne, and I even get your point above. That being said, I think there is a lot of the lore aspect of GW1 that many GW1 players are missing. I know I am.

As much as I love GW2, I was really hoping that all the great stories and world changing things we did in GW1 would have a huge and lasting impact on GW2. The evidence of those impacts would be glaring. We would have more to do with things we had to deal with in GW1.

Many creatures have disappeared with no explanation. Many say extinction, yet that is pure speculation.

I just wish I could see more of GW1 evident in GW2. I really don’t care about the manifesto, but the things that really sucked me into the beautiful world in GW1 just seems to be missing in the game built upon its legacy.

Don’t get me wrong, I love GW2 the game, but I just would like to see more of the things I loved in GW1 incorporated into GW2 other than ruins of places I frequented.

If climate change is a factor, then all dinos, including the raptors would be wiped out I think.

It would be fairly easy to explain a lot of the disappearances and lore discrepancies. I don’t know why they (ANet) doesn’t.

If you want to support the game, please stop putting money into RNG boxes.

These are stopping them from putting real straightforward skins into the store, and are consistently forcing you through this abusive gambling side of the game if you want something like fused weapon skins (outside of gold)

Actually buying RNG boxes does financially support the game. It just doesn’t support what you want out of the game.

Thats what he is saying isn’kitten

EDIT: KITTEN? REALLY?? I did not talk about some female body part I said isn’t ……………………….. it?

Have they fixed the maximum number of characters when creating a title finally? Or can you still type more then you are allowed to resulting in an error when creating?

It’s this sort of software engineering that’s the problem.

I don’t think it was what he was saying. He said “If you want to support the game, stop putting money into RNG”. That will not support the game. It may send the message that RNG sucks, but it doesn’t actually support the game. The way to support the game is through sales of the game and sales of in store items since there is not sub fee.

Not buying RNG doesn’t support the game in any way.

BTW, I have had the same problem with the “kitten” issue. How dumb is it when two very benign words close together get censored? I think they are a little over the top with their censor.

What are you talking about? Charak said if you want to support the game not to buy RNG boxes. Not buying RNG in no way supports the game. Spending money supports the game no matter what you buy. RNG boxes or anything else.

Nowhere in my post did it say anything about RNG being perfect. In fact, the whole post had nothing to do with how great or bad RNG is. So, what the hell are you talking about?

I have yet to see one of such titled threads that generate one truly good suggestion. They are just filled with wild accusations and people who love to get caught up in the griping and complaining.

In forums if there is a balance between positive and negative comments that is the norm. But when it turns mostly negative there is something definitely wrong with the direction of the game.

That is just not true. There are always 80-90% negative feedback on most public forums for any public forum. By nature people will easily complain when they don’t like something but will rarely take the time to comment when they are satisfied.

Forums bring out the complainers in droves. Mostly negative comments is the norm not an indication of “wrong direction” in anything. If comments were balanced with negative and positive as you said, that would be something that would be weird.

Please stop moaning.

That’s an absurd statement. Feedback and moaning are defined by the reader. What’s complaining uselessly to you can be legitimate feedback to another, negative or positive.

Let ANet decide what they call feedback and whining. You don’t work for them. You don’t represent them. Who are you to tell anyone on this forum as to how they can express themselves? |:

I agree, but I also think I know what the OP is talking about. People that post things like “The game wont last much longer”, “ANet is struggling”, “GW2 is dying because of RNG” etc., etc., etc. Are just as bad and are annoying as they can be. Those are not opinions, they are statements about the game and the company that provides the game.

Just as you said to the OP, those people don’t work for the company or represent them. Making such statements are also absurd and stupid. I don’t read them any longer, but just seeing them annoys the kitten out of me.

You might try posting in Player Helping Players, as this isn’t an account issue. Good luck.

This is is Guild Wars 2 Discussion and is for general discussion. Since the OP doesn’t seem to be asking for help and was wondering about the population of the game, I think this is an appropriate place to post his/her question.

The post was moved here, he originally posted it in the account support forum, which was not the correct place to post it.

Gotcha! Thanks for letting me know. I wasn’t aware.

We are a very casual guild looking for mature players who enjoy the game as relaxation and fun. We have guild events, bounties, treks, and rushes. We don’t require any participation but welcome you if you want to join in.

There is no real time requirement, we just ask if you are going to be absent for longer than a month you just let an officer know so we don’t assume you have left the game.

We are a fun and helpful group. If gaming with more mature gamers is for you, please drop me a line in game and we will get you an invite.

We have Team Speak and a website at http://gator3149.hostgator.com/~gwmara0/gw2/ if you would like to check us out.

We roll on two servers Yak’s Bend in North America and Gunnar’s Hold in the EU.

We Need Gw1 Skins :)

Even after 250 years, you would think some of those skins would still be around even as displays. Why wouldn’t we see a Mursaat Hammer on display somewhere? Just weird that 99% of the skins don’t exist in one form or another.

My original in game goal was to have a toon of each class to reach level 80. I abandoned that to make my legendary and keep up with the living story. So this month is to level my necro to 80 and work on various easy achievements I have ignored.

Why southsun is dead? Solutions for ress it

Maybe even a permanent, non-Karka Queen world boss event that spans multiple regions including South Sun would bring more people there. I know it isn’t a solution for the overall emptiness of Southsun, but it wouldn’t hurt. It might also help with some other lightly populated places.

Guild Alliance's?

I belong to two guilds that are very friendly with one another and we help each other out all the time. We enjoy playing together quite a bit. It is a shame that we cannot have at least an alliance chat in order to communicate easily. It would make many things much more enjoyable.

In fact, there are two other guilds that we also enjoy playing with from time to time. It would be great if all four of these guilds could band together and beat on a world boss (especially Teq) and communicate freely.

Does anyone actually LIKE their class?

I have six different lvl 80 classes. I enjoy playing them all. I am currently leveling my necro (lvl 32) and will work on the thief after that. All classes, to me, are fun to play in their own way.

As Scumbag Mawile said above, the forums tend to bring out the gripers and complainers.

After a quick self-diagnosis it dawned in me – why do I get so upset about a video game? …because I LOVE this game!

I’m going to hope that this is just another poor example of totally overblown hyperbole, and that this really doesn’t need to become a discussion about why it’s completely inappropriate and unhealthy to love an electronic game [after a year, and often, even longer than several years]. For the time being, I’m also going to ignore that sickening comparison of feeling held towards a game with feelings held for a spouse; considering spouses are people who can return affections, enhance each other’s lifestyle, and sacrifice for each other when needed; while a game like this blindly tries to distribute ‘entertainment’ to a whole mass of people while giving benefits to it’s creators, which is a dual motive of selfishness on both sides.

But if you actually believe that a person should/could love a game, then I will suggest you read some literature about “behavioral addiction” and how it only induces shallow feelings of attraction towards objects, and not the deeper feelings that we are only capable of holding towards living beings [or higher principles]. It’s offensive enough that you’ve already tried to convince people that what they are experiencing resembles “love”, when you have not even bothered to become aware of what others are experiencing.

Yet you are enamored enough with the game to actively post on the forums and comment (to literally) on others feelings toward the game.

Game forums are usually populated by those who have a very close attachment to the game they play. If the game is so inconsequential for you, why troll the forums?

It seems to me that the tennis match was started by you. The OP was just hitting balls over the net never expecting them to be returned by an opponent. Yet you, not being able to resist taking aim at a nice, harmless post, tried to line drive the ball back in the OP’s face. Classy.

Will we ever be able to go through here?

IMO it feels like they abandoned the rich lore that they continually crafted through all four GW1 story lines (Prophecies, Factions, Nightfall, and EOTN). Each was carefully and thoughtfully executed as far as story was concerned. It was very detailed and comprehensive.

The personal story in GW2 has an obvious start and finish, but it’s effect on everything in the world isn’t as encompassing as it was in GW1. It also isn’t as engaging as it was in GW1.

Now with the addition of the LS, it seems like the story is getting thinner and thinner. The plot is uninspired and full of holes.

There was so much unanswered from GW1 that could have been explored in GW2. There was a huge base of things they could have built upon in GW2. What have the remaining Mursaat been up to? What’s become of the Tengu? Why wasn’t there waves of Elonians pouring into Kryta and Cantha when Palawa Joko was taking over? The White Mantle is obviously not gone. What are they scheming?

There are a myriad of stand out Character’s in GW1 that they could have followed some of the activities of their descendants. In Ascalon and The Shiverpeaks they could have taken us to some places (destroyed or not) not seen yet and built LS around those places.

I think “pacing things out” is a joke. There is enough material from GW1 that they could have built story line around that could have lasted us through the life of the game.

The comprehensive, rich lore of GW1 made it the game it was and set it apart from other MMO’s. They have yet to recapture that wonder and build upon it’s foundations IMO. Where are the storyteller’s from that time?

Why was lore presented so poorly in GW2?

^ HoM is the biggest disappointment to at least myself.

I mean I spent hours making my HoM look exactly how I wanted with the different monuments, heroes, everything laid out to look good. I didn’t expect to come into GW2 with a pristine Eye of the North or a pristine HoM. I kind of liked the idea of walking up and seeing the hero statues with maybe an arm missing or just weathering effects, my armor was somewhat rusted out, and the Oppressor’s Weapons that I filled my Weapons with would be a bit dingy. Perhaps even the mini-pets would be wandering around, no longer trapped standing in place. I mean it wouldn’t be a perfect HoM, but it would be yours. You would own it.

I know what you mean. When I saw it, I felt the same. What made me OK with it was that I figured after 250 years it would be completely looted. After that I was good with just being able to see something that looked much the same as it did in GW1. We certainly don’t have much of that in GW2.
