Tyria Elsewhere

in Lore

I am sure many of you have seen the map of the world of Tyra. It is freaking huge. The parts we have been to (Tyria, Elona, Cantha) are small in comparison.

http://www.guildwarsinsider.com/backend/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/World-of-Tyria.jpg

I was wondering if any lore at all has been given on areas we have not seen yet. I don’t mean areas we have not been able to get to yet in either Guild Wars game, but areas outside what we can see on the in-game map. Surely areas beyond the three places we have been to have populations and creatures. Is there any lore on these places, however vague that may be?

5. What happened to the various different undead? Hell Hound, Necrid Horsemen, Ghouls, Bone Dragons, Executioners

Wiped out when the first Orrian undead were taken care of.

This is probably the only one I don’t agree with. They may have been wiped out in Tyria, but they should still be crawling all over Orr. Orr, I am sure had horsemen, dogs, clerics, etc. Maybe the clerics and executioners could be now known as shamans/priests and abominations, but the horsemen and hell hounds should still be there.

One reasonably common theory is that the Vizier may have selectively grabbed what he thought would be the most powerful undead for his force – including the dragons, cavalry, and Orr’s standing army in general. This would also explain why Zhaitan’s army seems to have so little in the way of conventional soldiery (you also don’t see any archers in Zhaitan’s army but Khilbron’s was full of them, for instance).

Ok, I can buy this, but completely wiped out without running into ANY in Orr? I’m not quite buying that. The Vizier surely would have picked up one of the undead giants too would he not. I’m not complaining, it just seems to be a little inconsistent. I think maybe developers were a little more worried about they types of undead they needed in Orr rather than continuity with undead in GW1.

why does everyone hate trahearne?

in Lore

Posted by: jheryn.8390

jheryn.8390

I think Trahearne was just executed poorly. In theory there’s nothing wrong with the role he has to play. If, for example, it was Tybalt that was stealing the show from you in the final arc of the story, I doubt many people would be complaining.

But bland lines combined with wooden voice acting and an abrupt/forced introduction? That does not make for an emotional connection with the player.

So even if the lore and explanations behind Trahearne’s character, motivations, and eventual undertakings all make logical sense, that still is not enough for a good story.

I agree with everything you said. His script was very poorly written. His lines were either flat or over-the-top. A lot of his script was also speech making. Bad speech making. The one that had me actually telling a computer generated character to shut-up was the one after retaking Claw (or Klor) Island. It went on and on and was so syrupy and d-level sci-fi writing that I laughed after my first toon and got annoyed after the second.

Trahearne: We did it. We recaptured Claw Island-and in so doing, saved Lion’s Arch as well.
Trahearne: I don’t know what lies ahead of us, my friend, but for the first time-I have hope.
Trahearne: Hope that this alliance can save Tyria from the dragons. Hope for the future.
Trahearne: Hope…for Orr.

I don’t hate Trahearne, I just think he was executed poorly.

To quibble there are millions of Mona Lisa’s some very, very good. They are copies but they are Mona Lisa just not the original.
No problem on my part to see ring on vanity items, or for them to be in the gem shop.

I knew someone who opened 10 BL chests and received two fused weapon tickets and an Abyss dye. I also knew someone who opened 87 BL chests and received nothing.

Assuming this anecdote is true, and assuming they paid cash for the gems instead of converting gold (a big assumption, I’ll admit) it perfectly illustrates the case against rng items. Person B was clearly willing to spend the cash to get a cosmetic item. But because rng – something that is completely beyond a player’s control – was not favorable to them, they had to go without something they obviously wanted.

RNG = Luck.

Let me put it this way:

Person A purchase ONE lottery ticket and won millions of dollars.
Person B purchased an entire lot of lottery tickets and won nothing.

Because luck – something that is completely beyond anyone’s control – was not favorable to everyone. Therefore, lots of people have to go without something they obviously wanted.

This isn’t the lottery. It’s not a casino. It’s a video game. If someone wants an item, why should he/she be denied that item because of luck? If someone is willing to put forth the effort in-game or is willing to spend cash in a cash shop to obtain an item, should that not be enough?

Remember, games are supposed to be fun. What’s fun about being told “you can’t have the items you want because you weren’t lucky enough”? We’re not talking about a lack of effort, and we’re not talking about an unwillingness to spend money; we’re talking about bad luck – in a video game – preventing one from getting the items they want.

And for companies, games aren’t meant to be fun. They’re meant to make money.

How refreshing. A post that has common sense. Good for you Vol!

I hope this thread gets locked down soon. How many posts can you have where people can’t grasp simple concepts?

1. Rare – Is something not everyone can get or have. Not many of them. Not likely to be found. Very few exists.
2. Whiner – Person who says things like, “They have something I want so I should get one too.”
3. Grasp of Reality – There is only one Mona Lisa. Not everyone gets to have one. Deal with it.
4. There is a real life company that makes and supports Guild Wars 2. They do this to make money, not cater to you. If they do not make money on Guild Wars 2, it will go away and no one will get any further skins or anything else for that matter.
5. If you don’t like it, quit playing and go somewhere else.

I totally get what you are saying, but it is a semantics issue. I could take what you said and word it differently with the same result. There is only ONE Mona Lisa, there are millions of copies, many of them good, but there is only one Mona Lisa. The bottom line is that we agree. The gem shop is how Anet makes money. For people to whine about them making money in this way is stupid. There is a simple solution for the whiners, if you don’t like it, then quit. Griping about it will not make it go away. Thanks for the reply Yargesh.4965, you made me smile. It’s nice to know there are other people with common sense out there.

3. When did Ogden decide to go through the transformation?

Within 50 years, every dwarf had undergone the transformation. I know it’s not an exact “when” but it does give you a 49 year timeframe (1079 AE to 1128 AE).

Thanks. I guess I should have known this since all dwarves were forced into the transformation.

4. What happened to the other Tyrian Heroes? Olias, Livia, Hayda, Anton, Vekk, Xandra, Kahmu

We can find Anton’s ghost. I forget where though, but one can find him in-game. He’s in Gendarran Fields, I think…

Thanks again! Can’t wait to check that out.

GW2 expansion - 1Q Ncsoft Conference Call [merged]

6th most played game by Xfire users currently, logging about half the hours of World of Warcraft (which seems to have a much larger Xfire userbase than GW2 player-for-player) despite GW2 being only about a tenth of WoW’s age. Fairly stable box sales and a stronger-than-expected cash shop performance.

Tell me more about how GW2 is failing, naysayers. Data’s proving otherwise. You not liking the game =/= everyone not liking the game. Get over yourselves, and check your delusions of grandeur at the login screen.

As for this investor call and mention of an expansion, I recall Colin saying that they had several years of content being planned (planned, as in not actually being put to IDE), and I’ve never doubted those plans include expansions. I speculated then, and continue to speculate now, that they’ll be looking at other dragons (Kralk, Jormag, Bubbles, etc) and additional areas (named areas surrounding the current playable area that we can’t get to yet, Elona, Cantha) to fill out their expansion content while maintaining a steady stream of monthly Living Story and similar content updates as they’ve been doing for the past few months.

And I’m definitely digging that. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have an overflow to greet in this seemingly “dead” game.

Awesome reply! Kudos to you.

To be honest all of the living stories were boring and the super adventure game box was just a silly experimentation. Can we please do some more work on the boring skills system?

I am sorry you didn’t enjoy them, but please keep in mind that your opinion is just that, yours. I personally have VASTLY enjoyed the content that has been added to the game since release, both one time and ongoing. Judging by the number of people that I see doing the content while I’m doing it, I’m not alone in that feeling.

You are not alone. I like the living story and have enjoyed it very much. I must admit, however, I am longing for new places to explore. I love dungeons, but I want a new map or two.

I thought the max size of a guild in GW2 is 500?

Anyway, the youngest active member of my guild is over 21. Most of our members range from 35-50 yrs.

You are right, we are split into three separate guilds because of that cap. We still consider ourselves one guild and have a web site where we can still pretend we are all together. LOL

Unarmed combat – all professions. A “wristband” replaces the actual weapon and goes into the weapon slot. Different wristbands could offer alternative skills.

Good call. Unarmed would be cool.

I would also like to see another weapon for elementalists. Maybe a chakram or shuriken. Even a the Tanbo which could be considered a two handed weapon for one in each hand.

Fused Weapons Are Now The Rarest In GW2 ?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

jheryn.8390

regardless of how you got it, a fused weapon sends the message that you gambled 100$ of RL money on it. Legendaries while purchasable with RL money still have an element of farming and in game pride. These things will be released regularly so Fused weapon is the first of many many one time skins that have to be gambled for. Unless you are a Dubai prince or something you won’t be able to obtain them all so just get whatever you want. No one at any time in the future will care if you have a fused weapon I promise.

It may send that message to you, but not to everyone. I bought 5 keys and got one on the second try. It was just luck. I know another guy that got it opening just one chest and he didn’t even know what it was. He asked in our guild chat what a Fused Weapon Ticket was. Many people were lucky enough to get one without spending loads of money.

Anet and GW2 developers have recently been discussing new content and an expansion in the works. After a lengthy discussion last night with a fellow guild member, we were speculating on what the new content may be. I am sure all of us have opinions on what that may be so let’s hear them. Here is my take.

MAP: I think new areas of the map will be slowly opened up with the using the Living Story. Areas of the map still not accessible to us but surrounded by areas that are will be used for Living Story arcs. This isn’t my brilliant deduction. I can’t take credit, this is my guildie’s insight and I think he is spot on.

RACE: I am certain a new playable race will not be to far in the future. My guess the first one would be the Tengu.

PROFESSIONS: After that lengthy discussion I had, I believe that there are really only two viable professions from GW1 that could return. Dervish – because their profession was based on the gods who have left. Such a big deal has been made of the gods disappearing, that I am sure that they will resurface some day and something like a dervish will make a debut. It would be a suitable third Warrior class. The other would be the Ritualist whose magic is not derived from the gods or from any other conventional magic. New professions are certainly a possibility as well.

EXPANSION: I believe the next expansion will probably be the Crystal Desert. There have been clues pointing to this. The Ring of Fire, Northern Shiverpeaks, Maguuma Jungle, and Charr Homelands are also good bets.

CANTHA and ELONA: Probably down the road someday. Elona would be first is my guess. It is just below the Crystal Desert. Cantha will happen too I believe, but much farther in the future. I think we may see other parts of the world first. If you have the chance to look at a large map of the WORLD of Tyria, it is huge. Tyria, Cantha, and Elona, don’t even scratch the surface of what could be out there.

The Cantha Thread [Merged]

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: jheryn.8390

jheryn.8390

Some may have already posted this, but I think Cantha would be very easy to do. Travel could be possible by gate or ship. An elder dragon threatening the Factions area may force Cantha to reach out for help (from any races willing to do so) in order to save their hides. There are many possibilities.

As loved as Cantha was, I don’t see it being completely abandoned. One of these days I am sure it will make a debut.

The one thing I did read on this thread that ties to Cantha, is the lack of old places to visit. Most are in ruins or just vanished without a trace. I think it was unwise on ANet’s part to not give us GW1 people more familiar names and places we could get to that are not unidentifiable ruins. New players would just think they were new places, and us “old timers” would love the connection to our past. Maybe Cantha will bridge that gap as I don’t see it changing much if they are that xenophobic.

Targeting Problems

In the last couple of days, I have been experiencing some targeting problems. I will target by clicking a foe with my ranger and I will get in range to fire with the little red arrow over the foe’s head. When I start firing, the target arrow will disappear and she will turn and start shooting at a deer or some other creature that is behind her or to the side.

It is getting frustrating. I haven’t had this problem in the past few weeks I have been playing this tune. Is this a new, known problem, or am I somehow causing this? Any help would be appreciated.

sigh So tired of these people who scream “entitled” bla bla bla…

Its like the new “u mad?”

The next time your Electricity, Water, Cable or Internet Connection has issues and you are told nothing is wrong, dont you dare complain about it. There will be no entitlement hypocrisy from you.

There is merit to what you have to say as well as what the person speaking of entitlement has to say.

If there is something wrong you should indeed report it and expect it to be fixed with your utilities. Even some things in the game should be reported when something is wrong. That is not entitlement, that is just life.

Where the problem is stems from what people perceive as “wrong”. Some people think things are wrong when everything is not handed to them. That is entitlement. Others think something is wrong when they are getting no XP when they craft something at their current crafting level. That is actually something wrong with the game.

What I find disturbing is that people are constantly griping and complaining. They don’t report anything, they just start yelling and screaming as if something was intentionally done to them.

So there are those who act as if they are entitled and there are those that throw tantrums with any perceived problem (real or not) in the game.

I have some issues with a few things, especially where guilds are concerned, but I am not going to start calling ANet employees names, or saying that the company is out to get me, or whine like a toddler when things are not fixed as I think they should be in the timely manner I feel they should be.

All of you who are acting like small children about things you perceive as wrong, why don’t you be mature, state your problem in a calm, informative dialog, and promote healthy agreement or disagreement. All of the name calling, accusing and hatefulness needs to stop.

We should be grateful that we have been given a game that is expansive and rich in both scope and content. There is not a game out there that does not have problems including GW2. The difference with GW2 over other games is that the GW2 team members are constantly trying to make it a better place. Adjust your attitude and I promise you will get better, faster results.

BTW thanks for the posts Colin. Always great to hear from the game team.

She was also complaining about the crafting.
Another super hard, really stressful skill. However, I’ve come up with a way to make this easy on even the most skillfully challenged player.

1.) Go to a Crafting station. Preferably one that you can use.
2.) Look at the Refinement section on the left.
3.) Select something like Bolt of Jute or Copper Ingot.
4.) Enter then number of items you would like to craft, like the required 10.
5.) Press Craft.

I know how hard this can be but with practice you will master it!

LOL Dude! You are hilarious! I am sure many people here will benefit from your sound advice. After all, crafting 10 things is a very difficult and complex thing to do for some people. I just hope others, like myself, appreciate you altruism. Keep up the good work OPO! I would give you a medal if I could. Heck, I might even be able to craft one!

As our artists have also said in interviews that one of the purposes of concept art is that it is a way to convey mood to a viewer and to serve as inspiration for designers. Concept art is not necessarily a blueprint to follow by rote. There is stuff in the game that looks like the concept art, but just because something is depicted in the concept art doesn’t necessarily follow that it will make it into the game.

Please take your tinfoil hats off and be reasonable.

ROFL That is just funny! Tinfoil hats indeed. I’ll never understand people who take everything so literally. And as far as mounts go, who gives a flying kitten and a rolling doughnut about mounts? Even if ANet does make them, they could be purely cosmetic like the flying broom. Why doesn’t everyone just shut up, calm the kitten down and wait until ANet comes out with mounts (or doesn’t) when they are ready?

I love GW2 but I was curious about where some of the creatures are from GW1. There are a lot of different creatures that are missing that I was curious about that were plentiful in areas we now have. It would be great to see some of them again if nothing more than as additional bad guys and for nostalgia for those of us who were GW1 fanatics. And maybe I am just missing them. Some that come to mind are:

1. ___goyles. (Mergoyles, Gargoyles, etc. All over the Ascalon areas and everywhere else)
2. Hydra (Ascalon)
3. Various seeds and husks (Aloe seed, Aloe Husk, Life Pod, etc – Everywhere)
4. Skeletons – Everywhere
5. Nightmares (Crypt fiends, Azure Shadows, etc. – Ascalon & Shiverpeaks)
6. Zombies (Kryta)
7. Dinosaurs (Maguuma)
8. Incubi (Dungeons – EOTN)
9. Mantid (Charr areas)
10. Mandragor (Charr areas, Shiverpeaks)

I have to say that I love GW2 and I know there is much content that will be coming our way. The only thing from GW1 that I am severely dissapointed about that was not included in GW2 is the Ritualist class. Nothing like it exists in GW2 and I am hoping it will make a return some day. But I think ANet has done a great job with the game with the sole exception of how guilds/alliances are handled.

1. The Ritualist class.
2. Saving Builds
3. Guild Halls
4. Alliances and Alliance Chat
5. Mursaat (loved these as bad guys!)
6. Cantha
7. Celestial weapon skins.
8. Istan
9. White Mantle (Also great bad guys)
10. Hydra & Dinosaurs (Were all of these killed off in the Ascalon & Maguuma areas?)

I have noticed this too. Dragon events especially are so much more populated than they were before guesting happened. Talk about exploiting!

You cannot tell me that transferring servers and having to stay there for 7 days was worse as far as exploiting goes than what we are now seeing with guesting.

Also, these “guests” are slowing down events and making skill delays maddening. Guesting certainly didn’t make things better for me. Guesting made dynamic events exponentially worse. It is less fun to play now that all the “guests” have arrived.

Guesting is Coming

Now I understand how people are frustrated that they will be forced to choose between friends/family in different regions, but I doubt that ArenaNet are implementing it this way just to annoy a portion of their player base. Those who have more technical expertise that I do are better able to comment on why they may be limited in implementing guesting on an international scale, but I think it’s safe to assume that if there was an easy solution, then ArenaNet would have implemented it.

I don’t think anyone is suggesting that AN is doing this to annoy any of their players. I do believe, however, that promises and facts were presented and then either disregarded or discarded. We were told that we would be able to guest on ANY WORLD WHERE WE HAD FRIENDS. We would never have structured our international guild the way we did if we had any notion that this would not be happening. Now guesting will be a pale and sad version of what was promised and those of us waiting with great anticipation are left perplexed and even angry.

There is a true international community that was fostered by ArenaNet in GW1 with promises of its continuation in GW2. Part of the joy I had in playing the game was to make friends from all over the world through my guild. GW1 bred that international feel and cooperation and now it is being ripped away. Until this point, we were freely able to play on different worlds, knowing that actual free world transfers would end but be solved by guesting. Now it isn’t happening. And if world transfers are so horribly difficult and bad, why were we allowed to do it for free for over five months?

None of us hate Anet. None of us do not appreciate the wonderful creation of GW2. None of us are whining because we didn’t get our way. We ARE, however, expressing the loss of something we held dear. The loss of our community isn’t funny or irrelevant. It is sad and all the more hurtful, because we truly believed things would be better for us in GW2, not worse.

I love Guild Wars 2 and have been playing since the beta’s but I am a bit concerned about some things that are happening.

I am in a guild comprised of international members. I was fine with us being on different servers because we could transfer worlds when we wanted to game together. I also knew this would end because of the promised guesting feature that would allow us to play with any friends we had on any world. Now however, I see that guesting will only be regional and world transfers are going to cost real world cash. This effectively cuts me off from many of my international guildmates and friends.

I thought ANet’s primary concern was the social aspect of GW2. I find myself now actually more cut off from the social aspect than ever because of these new features. Honestly I feel like part of the fun I had playing the game is now taken away. Can someone tell me if there are plans to rectify this in the future? Surely I am not the only GW2 player cut off from Europe now.

Guesting is Coming

I was waiting with great anticipation for guesting. It was my understanding from articles by ANet that we would be able to guest ANYWHERE. Now that is not the case. I am very disappointed, as is my whole guild, that are on two different servers. One in NA and the other in EU. In fact, now it is worse in that we will have to actually pay cash for the opportunity to play with our counterparts on the opposing servers where before at least we could transfer worlds for free.

I guess I am trying to say that it seems as if ANet is not making things better for the social community, but just shuffling the problems around. We never had this problem in GW1 and I am hoping it will be rectified in GW2.

Guild Alliances and Guild Size

One of my favorite things about the original Guild Wars was that guilds could form alliances. Even at 500 members per guild there are many GW1 “guilds” that had many more members than that and were able to consider themselves one group by establishing alliances. With the way servers work, the limit on guild size and the lack of alliances, many of our former communities are being divided. If you are going to limit guild size, please bring back Alliances so we with larger groups can still game easily together and enjoy the community we once had.
