Hi trooper,

I’ve also spent quite a bit of time testing out the new gm traits and try to come up with a build that works. I still believe BD and Maim is a very good combo. However, BD, as others already pointed out to me, almost screams for power-based build, you can’t really go full condition with BD, whereas Maim would favor conditions.
I have tried to go hybrid with celestial or mix between power/condi gear and rely on might stacking to bring up the dmg to the decent level. While not saying its a dead end, I didn’t find much hope in that direction.

Now if u consider a power-based build with same traitspread, using both BD and Maim, how would you make it work?

This is probably a silly idea but since Pyro said, this build is gonna be non-traditional, so its worth looking into. xD

First of all, it goes without saying u can naturally stack might quite easily with this build, (F2 shatter with BD, shattered strength minor trait, staff aa). You also have good access to fury which means you need to something to make use of these boons for burst dmg. While this is a shatter build, the shatter wont be your main burst, because you already use it to buff u up, and you can’t shatter again so soon to make use of those buffs because of low-clone generation rate. So we’re looking at some other forms of burst dmg.

And what could that be? Phantasm? Yeah but which one? Iwarlock
Iwarlock hits harder with more condition types on target which in this case, you can unload a barrage of conditions on target including confusion and torment on shatter, burn, vuln., bleed, weakness, chilled, blind, almost all conditions in this game except Fear. Ofc some of these conditions will be easier to maintain than others, lets just say you can maintain consistently 5 conditions (confusion, torment, bleed, burn, and vulnerability) — thats 50% more dmg with iWarlock. Ofc your conditions wont hit hard, they’re just there as debuffs while with shatter you gain might and fury.

Also, since shatter is now just a mean to buff your dmg up, you dont really need a full 3-clone shatter, but rather more important that your clones can shatter on target to inflict the conditions. So I wouldn’t hesitate to shatter 1 or 2 clones if they’re right on target.

I hope you follow my train of thought this far. I’m a bit sleepy so. But yeah, think about it?

you can try a phantasm build with sword/focus + staff. Its a fun build that I used back then, u aggro mobs with staff aa, let mobs swarm on you then u drop a chaos storm, switch to sword/focus, summon iwarden then hack away until they all die.

@Toeofdoom: believe it or not, i did try the build with staff as it has been my long time favourite weapon, but staff attacks are slow and it didn’t feel right for a bursty build when u want to burst people down hard then gtfo. I think staff would be more suitable for a more sustained build like 0/4/6/4/0 where u grab Restorative Mantras.

@Snoxx: agree with you that when MoP charge doesn’t crit, its dmg is just slightly more powerful than gs aa at max range… so pretty meh, but when it crits, it can proc both fire and air sigils, and unlike gs aa the dmg is consistent at any range; also, the way MoP works, its next to impossible for enemies to mitigate it.

I do realize the weakness of this build is lack of AoE dmg (thus bag-tagging), but its a specialist build that aims to assassinate a key target in group fight so AoE is outside the original purpose.

Side note: I do find it quite amusing to pretend you’re a clone spamming gs aa while secretly Power Spike enemies from range, and when enemies figure out which one is the real you, you just stealth away.

What should they do about pets?

Im in favor of having only 1 pet but with solid survivability and responsiveness rather then 2 pets with gimmicky swap mechanic. F4 can be freed up to give ranger more interaction with pet. Examples of F4 can be used to:

- activate another pet skill
- command the pet to dodge
- switch the pet between modes: we can have like Aggressive Enrage mode (pet moves faster and deals more dmg, but takes much more dmg at same time), Defensive Bulk Up mode (pet takes less direct dmg and reduced condition duration, but moves much slower), and Passive Carefree mode (pet does nothing except maybe grant ranger a tiny buff every 10s). So yeah, F4 can be used to cycle thru these modes and maybe put a cooldown between modes just like weapon swapping.

@Pyro: MoP scales… how oddly? Full on assassin’s gear, interesting, but would the crit-chance increase outweigh the loss in power overall?
Also, whats your opinion on the sigil, air vs intelligence?

Hi Dhampyr, glad u like the build.

I’ll be honest, I still suck at micro-manage mantra charges (have never play any mantra build) especially in the heat of battle, so I figure I stick with only MoP atm. But i can see the benefits of heal mantra. Having said that, Mirror heal has its own synergy with the build, since most of the time, enemies will need to attack u from range and most likely with projectiles, Mirror provides extra defense and offense with the reflect.

I’m thinking of switching out air sigil on gs for the sigil of intelligence for the three guaranteed critical hits of MoP Power Spike.

Also, just a note from my experience, it helps a lot to turn off autoattack with this build since spamming gs aa will reveal your position, unsuitable for the sneaky sniper playstyle, unless u r really good at positioning and/or distracting enemies with a gs clone.

What should they do about pets?

I think they should bathe and groom them, first. My Wolf has gone almost two years without a bath and he smells.

Illusions refer collectively to both clones and phantasms.

In terms of look:
Clones look exactly like you and wield the weapons you have on you at the time they are created.
Phantasms have the ghostly purple look and wield their own mist weapons depending on which type of phantasm.

In terms of damage and their own survivability:
Clones deal almost no raw damage but can inflict conditions based on your weapon and trait choices. Clones are meant to be expendable so they die very easily.
Phantasms deal decent dmg and are much tougher to kill than clones. Their dmg and toughness can be boosted further by certain traits.

Hi guys,

With the latest change of Harmonious Mantra being in Dueling traitline, recently I have been experimenting a WvW specialist build (0/6/6/2/0) that makes use of MoP 3 charges to achieve a nasty burst dmg in less in than 4s, rivalling the best burst of dps ranger (rapid fire + fury + quickness).

I list the build here:
My original version: Marksman of Pain
Warlord of Chaos’ more aggressive version: Marksman of Pain and Mental Torment

Its role as a long-range assault, sniper so to speak, making use of PU and stealth mechanic to disengage when things go bad. With PU and stealth giving you a solid defense, you can go all out dps with zerker (or assassin) gear, you can grab traveller rune to have speed and give you positional advantage.

Now the burst dmg from MoP is probably not our best in terms of dmg (that would be IP 4-clone Mind Wrack in my reckoning), but it requires less setup and less reliant on AI.

So what do u guys think? I’m interested to hear opinions from mesmer pros here whether or not this build can be decent as dueling 1v1 build as well, as for group fight, I have had very good experience with it so i think its solid.

Please discuss.

Edited: The build came out of the discussion about the use of Mantra of Pain in a PU power build before and I have updated the link with the refined version of the build.

Assassin gear works better than Zerker for this build since you really want MoP to crit.
My food and gear choice is based on what I have available and for my optimized survivability. I’m sure you guys can trade the toughness/vit for even more dmg.

I use the build with Sig of Inspiration (other utilities are still the classic Blink and Decoy).
The signet seems to lessen the speed issue and also boosts boon uptime.

As for the concept of condi-burst on heal, I find it suits my counterattack playstyle very well (the reason I play clone-spam builds in the first place). It also introduces a bit more tactics and swift judgement that separates active skilled play from passive spamming.

Hi guys,

First of all, I trust that most folks here are already familiar with the clone-spam condition type of build, made popular by Natsu’s Blackwater PU build months ago and also my recent favorite Osicat’s Napalm Cat.

However, for those who crave for something different, a non-PU flavor and would enjoy a more offensive/ less defensive approach to clone-spam condi build, I implore you to discuss my take on shattering, or in particular, the new gm trait Bountiful Disillusionment (BD) in a such a build.

A classic clone-spam build uses scepter and staff with a preferred OH weapon. While this is the optimized weapon set, it does come with a drawback: clones occasionally too far away from foes when they “blow up”, thus wasting all the condition damage. Some addressed this issue by switching to sword MH so clones always hug enemies, however, this means giving up a huge potential condition output that scepter skills provide.

As you know, clone-spam builds prove to be most effective at melee and mid-range. Against skilled long ranged foes, not only you want to get close to them, but you might also want the clones to get close and blow up on their faces as well. And this is where shattering, or pseudo-shattering (as I’d like to call it, or more simply Fake Shattering) comes in handy.

Pseudo-shattering is the act of using shatter to command your illusions to go to target but hoping they will die (thus blow up in clone-spam builds) near target before they can actually shatter. It sounds funny on paper, and true, sometimes its a gamble, but sometimes, u look at the situation and u know full well they’re not gonna make it with all those AoE/Cleave flying around.

So what does all of this have anything to do with BD gm trait in Chaos?
Well, the way BD works is that as long u can activate the shatter, you gain the boons instantly, so basically with DE, dodge 1 clone and F2 Shatter (Cry of Frustration -CoF), and u get 3 might stacks for ~20s on a 30s CD, regardless what happens to the clone.

Its even better pairing up with Illusionary Persona (IP), just press the button but we’re not talking about shatter- builds here so that’s not the case.

As you can see, by design, BD is the total opposite of PU where u gain offensive boons with the prerequisite being shattering (PU gives defensive boons requiring u to enter stealth).
For condition builds, F1 shatter with Retaliation is not very significant, F3 and F4 shatters are situational, so that leaves only F2 shatter CoF on our discussion table.

Let me just say from experience that: by traiting for BD in a clone-spam condi build, CoF becomes very interesting: it’s spammable and should be used whenever its off cooldown, and when u use it as pseudo-shattering 1 or more clones, you put a huge pressure on your opponent. For example: lets suppose you CoF 1 clone

- Best scenario: the clone dies near target before it can shatter —> you get 3 stacks of might, target gets Cripple, Confusion, and Bleeding.
- Worst scenario: the clone dies far target or target dodges the shatter --> you get 3 stacks of might.

So always you get the minimum benefit of 3 stacks of might (in this case, CoF is like a selfish weaker version of warrior’s For Great Justice) and most likely force your opponent to use a defensive maneuver (like dodging).

I’ve been tinkering with this idea of incorporating BD in clone-spam condi build and I come up with my version that capitalizes on might stacking.

The build can maintain 100% uptime of at least 10 stacks of might, which means even F1 shatter can hurt.

I’ve been playing it for days and really enjoy it. The AoE burn is very effective in group fight. I also like the increased range blink too.

I like both ideas of anti-stealth and more mobility.

I know 90% of people will probably disagree but I think we should have 50% speed boost on signet of the hunt. Personally I find the active fairly useless compared to other classes actives unless you’re running one of those one shot wonder builds

and perhaps make all traps remove stealth, and add a trait that will apply 5-10s of revealed as well?

I agree on the point that rangers should have the best mobility in this game, not warrior. 50% speed signet might be too much since it makes swiftness obsolete, but some other forms of extra mobility would be nice.

I use wolf/river drake with this build, drake for even more burst dmg on f2, also drake is quite tough.
I use rune of vampirism and steal health food, life steal provides great sustain and has good synergy with this build since you have high attack rate and multiple target hits (I trait for piercing arrow).
For elite, RaO is more offensive while entangle is more defensive. I use RaO because I play very aggressively with this build, I use LF to create distance and the 6th effect of vampirism rune is great for escape.
I use zerker weapon and armour, knight for trinkets.

Oh I didn’t mean the immobilize. That is removed right away or you wouldn’t roll away. I’m talking about the condi’s that the new NM trait, Survival of the Fittest, removes when you activate a survival skill. It seems to remove those 2 at the end of the roll instead of when I activate the skill.

I think LF works like that so you effectively cleanses 3 conditions, immob first then another 2 conditions with SotF trait.

An entire class is immune to the effect of Power Block sounds pretty unbalanced. Even if thieves are excluded from being interrupted with cooldowns involved, there should be some sort of punishment, like double initiative cost for example.

Debilitating Dissipation needs nerf?

No, but DE makes those traits do things the devs might not have intended, mainly the ability to dodge2condition.

Since the traits are weak enough as is, they’re considering nerfing DE.

Personally, I think if Anet is hellbent on “fixing” this dodge2condtion effect, the easiest way is to make overwritten clones through dodging not counted as dying clones and thus not trigger conditions. Its a big compromise but i think players using clone -death builds will adapt.

You can make slight changes to your build until the end of Stage 1 but definitely not some big changes that totally remake the build.

Hi guys, at the moment, there are 10 builds submitted for this contest (check Section 2) which is very good. The contest has its good share of interest so thank you all.
I agree that a cap of 8 builds per contest like Pyro suggested is a good measure to ensure builds are thoroughly tested given our limited time.
I personally think the builds can be treated on a “first come first serve” basis to make it fair and square. But if anyone wants to withdraw and wait for next contest, it’s fine too.
We will have the list of builds finalized by 22th/Dec and it will be based on your last post here (so Chaos and Bunda, if u change your mind and want your build to stay for this contest, please repost and confirm)

@ ORB members including skcamow: Guys, if you can have all 10 builds reviewed for originality by 22th/Dec, that would be great. Also, Alissah might need some catching up on how the ORB’s doing. And it looks like some extra help from skcamow could make quite a difference as well.

@ Testers in the guild: Currently we don’t have many testers to assist originators in this contest, so if you’re a tester and want to help out your guildies, please voice your interest in this thread. Thank you so much.

I suggest run it a few times with a guardian friend to protect u with stability and blocks so that next time u know where to go and don’t get lost (even for a mere second). Once you are familiar with the run, it’s just a matter of timing your dodges and defensive skills (stealth, aegis, blink, stability, etc.)

The debate started by Chaos above brought something to my attention.
A friendly reminder to the participants:

Because a build might win by not only ORB’s good evaluation but also popularity votes, an originator should put extra effort in your build thread to generate more and more interest from the Crowd and redirect people to this thread to vote for your build if they like it.
Take Natsu’s Blackwater or Chaos Archangel’s thread as an example if you’re still not sure how to do it.

Speaking of which, voting will be available as soon as the application closes, that is, on the deadline 22th Dec, so please prepare yourself, people of the Crowd

Contest Question:

There is a difference in dates (application or registration) between sections 4 & 5. Is the deadline for submission the 15th (section 4) or the 22nd (section 5)? Or what is the difference between build application and registration? Thanks

Thanks for pointing out. As the deadline was extended, I just forgot to update the change in Section 4 as well. So its now fixed.

Another issue is that the signet ties your healing to how many illusions you have over a long period of time. With ether feast, it’s very straightforward to push out 3 illusions then heal, but with the signet it’s a passive check every three seconds. Since the 1 and 2 illusion ticks both have a significantly lower base heal and a significantly lower healing power scaling, uncontrollable events where you happen to tick with 2 instead of 3 will ultimately very negatively impact your total healing.

Maybe i have the worst luck in the world, but with my clonespam build, the illusion count changes too fast for 3s interval with the heal, making the passive effect very unreliable. For example, aoe just destroyed all my clones and the heal ticked before i could MI and/or dodge, and scepter autoattack.. well, it gets worse.

Owners of those builds, if you happen to stumble across this thread, please consider joining us. I believe all those builds are solid and deserve a lot of more attention from our mesmer community.

Also, just a short announcement:

As the patch brought about quite a number of dramatic changes to our class, I am happy to extend to the submission deadline to 22th December and pushing the contest further into January next year.

Despite the name of the contest and as much as I’d like the wrap this in a month’s timeframe, I think we’re looking at quality here and more time is needed to do any justice to the builds submitted.

Please check Section 5. Key dates and related news for the update on this date change.
