Try SweetFX with SMAA. Game looks nicer and no graphical problems. I typed this out in another thread so I pasted it here.

If you want to get the game to look better with your new card, you should try out SweetFX. I thought the game looked great already, but now whenever I turn off SweetFX it looks washed out. It’s a shader addon that makes GW2 look much nicer and sharper depending on how you set it. You just download it and extract it to your GW2 game directory. It’s always on when you start the game and you can turn it on and off with Scroll Lock key. You can manually tweak the setting yourself or download presets made by users. It’s not a hack so it’s prefectly ok to use.

This isn’t a new way. You could always force SSAA from control panel settings onto any game, but there can be issues like the problem with in your picture because it was never designed to handle it. There are other methods that work well in GW2 like SMAA from SweetFX or similar addons.

Good job. There’s too many players who play just for rewards like gold/achievements and only want to run things that they can grind out on some gold/hour scale. Real achievements are the ones that you feel that you actually accomplished something rather grinding something to check a box off a list. Soloing this boss shows that you have skill in learning the boss mechanics and what your class is capable of.

Just ignore the golems and concentrate on running and surviving. CC them when you get close with an interrupt and keep running. They can’t pull you if they aren’t close. If you are ranged, then just lock autoattack on one and keep running and shooting when in range. For melee, find a rifle or just hit them when they are close and dodge to run away.

I just purchased GW2 and as I thought, my computer is a little old for it. Used to play anything fine but it is a few years old, and I’m wondering if this time around I can get away with just upgrading the video card.

Motherboard – Gigabyte (H55M-UD2H)

Processor – Intel® Core™ i5 CPU 750 @ 2.67GHz

Video card – ATI Radeon HD 5700 Series (Nearly 100% certain it’s 5770 HD, been a while though).

Any help would be much appreciated, this game seems fantastic but I just can’t stand dipping to 25 FPS with all settings on low. (This is happening in the world, I haven’t even gotten to or want to experience busy PvP zones with this setup.)

Hi Fred, I’ve got a i5 760 @2.8ghz and a 5850HD. Your specs are close enough that I think my settings will be able to help you. I’m able to run near 50-60+FPS except for LA and large WvW zergs where it will dip to 20-30.

Here’s my settings. Don’t bother with presets. Leave everything on highest and turn off AA, reflections and shadows. Set rendering to native. WvW setting to medium quantity and low quality. Uncheck all the boxes at the bottom, they don’t do much and eat up a lot of performance. This will provide the best performance while minimizing visual quality loss. If you still need some more performance you can set textures or shaders to medium. Outisde of the game in the catalyst control center, make sure you aren’t forcing any settings to override ingame settings. Make sure you have stuff set on “use application settings” and turn off morphological filtering. That will add a terrible blur to your game which I didn’t notice until several months later.

Why does the hardest dungeon have 2 weeks?

I remember running Molten dungeon in a PUG with 3 brand new players who just bought the game and were lower than level 30 and one 80. Had to 2 man the final boss. Those 3 were friends and we had a lot of patience. Dungeons are supposed to be challenging and when you are still learning the game and don’t even have your entire skill bar unlocked, it will seem impossible. Having no level requirement for these dungeons ensures no one is excluded and is good for letting friends/guilds/pugs carry 1 or 2, but they should not expect to have the same survivability as 80s because they don’t have the gear or experience with their class and game mechanics. Just because there is upscaling does not mean you should be capable of completing dungeons with a party of lvl 1s.

The AOE cannon phases follow players around so if everyone scatters in different directions then the AOE will cover everything. Have your group stay either on one side or another running in a general circle because it will create a safe area where ever players have not been.

If you just want to AOE loot above all else and not worry about other things then there is a new separate keybind just for that. Bind it to Shift+F and it will only AOE loot and do nothing else. Now you will have F for normal interactions and single looting and Shift+F for only AOE looting.

Feedback on Exploration-based Achievements

in Living World

kokocabana.8153

I’m liking what ANet is doing with their achievements. The first 2 living stories were mostly contained in one or two zones and concentrated everyone to those areas and made everywhere else empty.
Now they are spreading holoprojectors/effigies out in the lower level areas to encourage players to explore those areas. You could just camp a few, but the respawn time makes it better to just move from one zone to the next and hopefully stop and do a few events. Now with the achievements in the JP mini-dungeons, it’s great to see people trying out a lot of content that they would have never bothered with or didn’t know existed. It only seems like a random grind to the completionists.

So what do soloists do?

in Sky Pirates of Tyria

Posted by: kokocabana.8153

kokocabana.8153

Soloists in an MMO can exist, but they can’t expect the developers to be focusing their efforts to cater to you. You’re in a genre that promotes group play and teamwork. Yes, you can solo most PvE things but the game is still an MMO. I think that ANet has gone to great lengths to make it possible for soloists to not miss out on rewards in these events. They have not put the rewards behind a 10/25 raid where you need to prep by reading up guides and watching videos to complete the dungeon. It’s a 5 man dungeon that requires a bit of teamwork and coordination. They’ve made a good compromise to accommodate everyone and it’s up to you if you don’t want to enjoy the content. I’m not saying to go play single player games, but if you can’t budge on not joining a group to do a dungeon then try to find an MMO that caters fully to soloists.

I don’t run with guilds in this game and don’t join groups in WvW. I like playing alone and only join groups if I have to run dungeons. Everyone running these dungeons were doing it for the first time yesterday. They all learned the dungeon by trial and error. Not trying because of a fear of failure is worse than failing because you never learn from mistakes.

kokocabana.8153

My first run was with a first time pug and got the first boss down after 3 or 4 tries and then we figured out about jumping on the boxes to avoid the lasers. Kiel bugged out on us and we disbanded.

My second run through with a new first time pug got first boss down on 2nd try. I just told them about the boxes and the first try was to see the laser wall mechanic for themselves.

The last boss was challenging but not hard to figure out. We first tried to kill Horrik since we couldn’t damage Mai. When he died, she just revived him. For some reason we could hurt her now and I looked at her Captain’s Shield buff and realized we needed to pull her into the blue AOEs that Horrik was shooting. The cannons were what kept killing us. I read up on it later that the cannons follow each player so it’s best to run together in a circle so you don’t get overlapping AOE killing others.

Overall, I would say it was a fun dungeon except for Kiel bugging out after jumping puzzle. Please fix that.

If you kill the mobs before she reaches can fight them, her script breaks down and she bugs out.

If you want to AOE loot, don’t have any interact popups and that includes “Search”. Very simple. I’m guessing people that are having problems are melee since they would be near the bodies after a fight, but for range this AOE loot should be easy to understand.

If you kill a bunch of things and then are next to a lootable body and have the “Search” popup. Press F once to loot that body and get rid of the popup and then press F one more time to AOE loot everything in the area.

Just got home and tested it. You have to be away from the bodies and from any interact popups including “Search”. Just press F and you see the sparkles all come towards you with the loot. If you are looting one at a time, it is because you are walking up to each body and autolooting as normal. If you are near lots of lootable bodies and you already have a “Search” popup, then just press F twice. The first F will loot the nearby body and the second will AOE loot the rest.

The reason why AOE loot takes the lowest priority on the interact function is to not interfere with other mechanics. You will notice things like banners and turrets already have priority over loot when pressing F so that when you are fighting you do not have trouble picking those up instead of looting.

Here’s what I posted in a different thread. I haven’t played the game yet to try it out.

This new AOE loot from what I gather requires you to not have any interact popups on screen such as “Loot” or “Harvest”. You press F and it will loot all bodies in a short range. If there is a interact pop up on screen, that will take priority over AOE loot. Alternatively, there is a new keybind to force AOE loot and ignore all interact popups.

I guess I just don’t understand the term “AOE” loot very well. I have it enabled, but I still have to stop at every single body/bag/chest and press “f” in order to loot each one. So my understanding is that AOE Loot pulls everything from that single bag into your inventory, but you have to interact with every single body/bag/chest around you in order to loot everything.

I really thought AOE Loot was so that you only had to interact with whatever was near you (within loot range) and ‘all’ loot belonging to you would go into your bag on one “f” press.

Pressing F once to loot everything on a single body is already an option called autoloot in the options menu.

Condition duration rounding

in Engineer

Posted by: kokocabana.8153

kokocabana.8153

Conditions only tick on the full second. But there are conditions that stack in intensity and those that stack in duration.

Bleed stacks in intensity. If the bleed lasts for 1.8 seconds then adding more bleeds does nothing to boost that 1.8 second duration to 2 seconds. Each stack is independent.

Burns and poisons stack in duration. You can extend the partial seconds to get an extra tick. Say you have 2 separate flame skills. One is 1.8 seconds and the other is 2.2 seconds. If you casted it on someone and let the first burn wear off before casting the second, then it would only tick once on the first and then tick twice on the second to get you 3 ticks. But if you stacked it, you would get a full 4 seconds with 4 ticks.

The tooltips will round down to the nearest 1/4 second for simplicity, but the actual condition’s duration is not rounded. In order for you to figure out the correct durations, you have to calculate it manually.

They promised to have little to no stat progression and they have kept to that. Cosmetic items have nothing to do with “winning”. You have shifted your idea of progression to having cosmetic items and then being able to pay real money for these items as paying to win. So they can’t sell BiS stat items in the gem store because that’s pay to win and now they shouldn’t sell cosmetic items because that’s pay to win as well. Maybe they shouldn’t offer more character slots because players can “win” more often by making more alts than other players.

By your logic, buying the game is pay to win because you can’t win if you aren’t able to play the game.

I like this idea of being able to donate. As for how upgrades are selected, I think that a player should be able to donate his funds into any upgrades that are available. Whichever upgrade gets fully funded first gets started and whatever money was donated to other projects are mailed back to the owners. Maybe reward WvW XP when an upgrade gets fully donated and constructed based on the proportion of their donation?

Example: Supply Camp

You can upgrade for caravan guards or extra supplies. You talk to quartermaster and see that Caravan Guards is 50% funded and Extra Supplies is 30% funded. You put in the minimum donation of 1 silver for each upgrade and continue playing. Another player comes by and donates the rest to complete Extra Supplies. Extra Supplies starts construction and you receive the 1 silver you donated to Caravan Guards back in the mail. Extra Supplies finishes upgrading and you receive 20% of the total WvW XP because your 1 silver donation was 20% of the full cost of 5 silver.

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: kokocabana.8153

kokocabana.8153

^That about sums it up. Most single player games with big graphics are usually GPU dependent, but GW2 is CPU dependent. Even with multicore support, most games only have around 2-3 cores worth of work to assign. Because of that, the performance of each individual core becomes more important than the number of cores. AMD tends to go for more less powerful cores and Intel goes less but more powerful cores. Depending on my graphic setting, GW2 always runs between 30-75% CPU usage on my intel quad core which is exactly what I’m expecting.

I know there are a lot of us that absolutely despise the downscaling feature we experience when going into a lower level area.

If there was a world or two where downscaling were disabled I think that would satisfy a lot of players who are otherwise losing interest and moving on to other games.

Just an idea. I hate to compare this game to WoW but it’s along the same lines as their PvP and PvE realms. They gave us the option and that made all the difference.

I’m confused as to why players would lose interest in a game because of downscaling? How would steamrolling through low level areas while one shotting everything keep you interested?
Whenever I’m in a low level area doing events and I see non-downscaled players, I take care to not grief. I’ll wait and let them tag mobs before I one shot them or let them take on a veteran alone and only help them if they go down. A level 80 in whatever gear is superpowered compared to anything in starter areas.

My answer to you would be to try leveling up the engineer on your own and figure out what works for you. Once you hit 80, you would have probably found what kits work for you.
I’m sure there will be lots of people either telling you to go grenade kit or HGH elixir builds. Grenades spam dps and conditions like crazy and HGH elixir builds stack might like crazy. I think if you were focused purely on sPvP, then maybe a very focused build is worth considering. I honestly don’t use either and stick to my dual pistols and elixir gun and do just fine.

As for mandatory traits, I would suggest 10 points in Tools for Swift Kits. Allows for perma swiftness by constantly switching from weapons to any kit.

-Use frame limiter to 60
The frame limiter doesn’t do a great job at keeping to 60 for me. Usually stays around 63, but better than vsync.
-turn down or off reflections
This setting really only affects reflections on water, but the game still slows down with this option even when you are not around it.
-turn off best texture filtering
This setting only sharpens textures that are at a distance. Whatever it uses by default is good enough as you would need to take a screenshot and compare pixel by pixel with a magnifying glass to see the difference.
-turn off depth blur
This doesn’t do much other than add blur to distant things.
-turn off high res character textures
I don’t see much of a performance hit when turning this on, but I could imagine it hurting performance in places like WvW where too many players are visible.
-turn off vsync
Makes the game feel sluggish especially when you are panning the camera. Stick to frame limiter.

You can keep the rest at highest and get a good frame rate with this. Keep rendering at native and lower shadows if you still feel slow.
