The only thing really worth it is a precursor. I assume you are going to buy the greatswords (or atleast not sell them).
With 350 gold you can get bout greatswords. To get a specific precursor you need on average 333 exotic weapons. Cause you are after money, you don’t care getting dusk or dawn, so you need on average 117 greatswords to get any precursordrop.
On average means you are actually betting odd or even (or as Buttercup said, Red or white). So basicly you are going to bet your money with a change less then 50% to miltiply it.
To have a decent attempt you need atleast double. Keep in mind that is never wise to gamble all your money, so best is to have 4 times the amount of money you are having right now.
I promise you, it will likely end in tears.

Ok, thank you!!!
12 tramutations crystals is pricyIndeed, but if you think a GW2 is a game where the progression is based on cosmetics, it’s actually cheap.
you can get 3 Trans stones (used when one or both items are level 79 or below) for every city (racial or Lion’s Arch) that you completely explore. Personally, I find Rata Sum fairly easy to finish exploring.
No use, the Order sets are level 80 so need Fine Transmutation Stones, and then obvious reskinning onto 80s is going to require the Fine stones too.
The naming of fine transmutation stones has been changed to transmutation crystals ages ago, for the rest you are correct.
Arise, opressed of Tyria!
Arenanet, thank you for this decission.
To the rest. This is a temporary thing.
I was one of the people who complained/asked for it.
I do not like WvW but I do understand the requirement to do WvW and I actually agree with it.
The reason I complained is cause I have over 2000 badges of honour and could have got the gift of battle ages ago. The only reason I did not do so is that badges of honour doesnt take up bankspace. As with all of these kind of change it is good custom to communicate this. Just as they are warning people to use up their glory in the next month, or announced the change on karma.
So I’m thankfull they are seeing it was a mistake to ninja this change wihtout any warning and are rectifying it. I’ll make sure I buy my gift this tuesday directly, and I’m certai nthat 2 weeks later the level cap will be put back with a warning before hand both here and on the frontpage.
Thank you Arenanet for doing the decent thing!

Other people trying to access my account?

Posted by: mercury ranique.2170
If the attempts were never successful (you can check authorized IP’s under your account here), they should not have gained access. But they tried, that’s for sure.
Someone probably got some of your info, like your email address but they haven’t been able to crack the code so to speak.
You might want to run a scan of your pc for key-loggers just in case and if you have saved your serial in you email, it might be good to note down your serial somewhere safe and remove that email. (there are password/serial key apps!)
For now you seem to be safe but it’s never a bad idea to make sure.
This info is not fully correct.
The person trying to gain access to your account has your emailadress AND your password. So they are making a succesfull login. The game however recognises that the login attempt is from a ‘strange’ location and sents you the email to verify it is ok (wich is obivously not ok).
I suggest you change your password asap. The advice to do a deepscan of your system is a good one.

have you tried the first dungeon??
Although the requirement is level 30 for storymode, it is common to wait till later before attempting them. It can be done, specially if you some skilled level 80’s in your party, but for them, besides the occasional sotry dungeon completer, there is no reason to do it, and you will be holding them up.
Maybe you want to look at other activity’s first to level up.
Cash is always an issue with your first character. From 0-80 you end up with bout 15 gold. This is also farmed at 80 in bout 4-5 hours.
As for other activity’s:
WvW – stay in the zerg
Crafting
Daily/monthly achievement. Almost all off these can be done in startmaps, and I often gain bout half a level when doing them and it doesnt take too long.
Arise, opressed of Tyria!
The only reason we have levels is cause for some players levels are a selling point. Anet has suvvesfully proven to those that levels are a bunch of hot air. So there won’t be any increase ever, nor is it needed.
Also, the map did not get any bigger and always have been this size.
Arise, opressed of Tyria!
sounds familiar.
I have no idea which post this image even refers to, since the post obviously no longer exists.
I’m also getting pretty fed up with thread merges, merging 800+ replies into one thread that nobody wants to read anymore…. and cant even find my original post (unless I sift through post by post) because it breaks the link in your personal posts page, and simply redirects you to the last page of the thread when you want to see your post.
Again, if you have issues with how the mods moderate, please email to the mentioned emailadress. Discussing mod actions in public is not allowed.
I am pretty thankfull for merging threads bout the same topic. We are currently seeing bout 10 threads a day pop up bout the current network issues. This is just polution off the forums. By merging it, not only all the people with the same issue are being brought together, but Anet can also see in clear number how big the impact off the problem is. Yes, they likely are not going to read and respond all individual posts, but you are clearly not stating that what you have to say is much more important then yours??

It is possible to do it but it requires teamwork.

The issue with the silver doubloons is that it is imo a faulty thing for a legendary. Yes, lorewise it does make sense that you need them to make quicksilver.
And actually, the amount of doubloons dropping in game is high.
The problem is that I think that, like me, most people dont check the tradepost for every item you get. on top of that, copper, gold and platinum doubloons are virtually worthless. So you really need to know they are valuable before you decide to chceck the TP. I gues everyday thousands of silver doubloons are destroyed by jsut selling them to the merchant by people who jsut don’t know.
The best solution would be for anet to change the recipe. silver doubloons are not endgame content so shouldnt be included in an endgame recipe.
till then the people who need them should raise awareness.
1: make sure you advertise in game that you have an offer for silver doubloons on the tradepost for xxx gold and xxx silver.
2: along time ago I made a threat on the player helping players to explain how valuable it is to park a 20-30 character you are not using at a jumping puzzle chest to gather the content with a change to get a doubloon.
If awareness is raised I think the price will drop atleast with 50%.

If they items are showing “Character Bound” instead of “Account Bound” then you can do this :
Get a piece of white equipment for each skin and transmute onto it. It might still say character bound, but wince whites are at most account bound it should be able to be removed from the bank by any character on your account.
Hmmmmm
I appreciate your help, but the items are accountbound, the op opened the legacy armor box and choose a light or medium armor set, not udnerstanding he can’t use that on his warrior. Cause he couldnt equip it, it is still account bound. The proces you are describing is correct but also very technical and confusing for someone who jsut started. Specially cause they are not something that solve his issue
Arise, opressed of Tyria!
But the OP has an issue. Have you seen the reports of me and IC and other players in previous threats? do you think that the OP should try it, cause it seem to have worked for many other people do you think that the OP should wait till after the weekend for a dev to read this? and maybe after that nice suggested window at update night cause the dev have to verify things internally?? or do you think that the fact that so many people in the past have claimed that the method work is enough evidence that it would be worth a go for the OP eventhough that we are arguing over interpetations of a 1 year old thread??
My point is, the advice given is something I have been giving and I have seen other giving many many times. It has confirmed to work many times and to me there is no doubt in my mind that it is the only working advice. we all have pride in discussions but for the OP this is only confusing and I am giving a valid solution right now with backed up evidence, while we wait for a possible answer from a dev, what would you advice the OP??

This is not just Arenanet. They hire they’re servers at a very decent server-supplier (aka cloudservice) this supplier has been victum off a ddos attack the last few days. ironical, some other games like e.g. WoW is using the same supplier and is having simular issues. The appropiate place to discuss this is the technical support thread. check there for more info bout this.
Arise, opressed of Tyria!
Yes, if you transmute the back piece onto a white one, just like your armour or weapons, it will become account bound,
Just search for a “Backpack set” on the trading post, the cheapest ones are around 1.1g, and they will give you a white back piece to use
you also get a kawaii back skin =p
Make sure you choose ‘-name- backpack set’ and not ‘-name- backpack skin’
Those backpack skins are ment to be availabler for everyone but have an exclusive skin. thats why the ‘set’ comes with a ‘skin’ that can be transmuted on any backitem and a white level 1 backitem for those that are low level and don’t have a functional backitem yet.
(just to explain what you are dealing with)
Arise, opressed of Tyria!
The colour off your server is random. the worlds in a match are chosen based on rank, recent playtime against eachother and rng. When that is determined, they use RNG to assign the colours. so yes it is luck.
Arise, opressed of Tyria!
The most depressing thing about the boss you’ve described is that it would be yet another sack of hit points that responds only to direct damage.
I’m waiting patiently for the boss that can only be beaten by striping its 200 stacks of Defiant before it kills you. Normal damage does NOTHING.
Again, it is an example from a different game, simply cause gw2 doesnt have something close to it. Direct damage against Mallyx was useless as well.
You have a valid point. I like the mechanic of some guildbounty’s (wich you are slightly referring to) but it is still too visable. A good fractal boss would be one that you need to break your mind over. Even if you find the tactic and understand it, it takes time and cooperation and coordination for the party to actually do it. So you are on the right track with your 200 stacks of defiant, but not getting there yet. Also, if we actually design such a boss, the pleasure of finding the key to the puzzle would be gone as well. so it something Anet should do.
Arise, opressed of Tyria!
I trully dont think he will be made into our enemy. Even today some delussional minds where spamming his support buttons in lions arch on my server. He was important cause there was an election, he didn’t get elected, so he is just the leader of the black lion company now.

You do know that ascended gear only gives 5% better stats, you can get the same effect with food that cost a few copper per 30 minutes
Ascended is a money drain designed to hold a carrot for your nose so you all fall in the trap to drain your money and resources. It is not really BiS gear and anyone who demands you to wear ascended gear outside fractals is an idiot and isnt worth playing with.
If you want to play (high level) fractals then it is good to get ascended gear, but most off the resources will be available to you then anyways.
Arise, opressed of Tyria!
Thing is that your dev-comment isnt supporting your line at all and you are reading it wrong.
To me if wasn’t related to number of people who chose the server, the Dev would have said something along the lines of FULL being related to people online. Not people who have chosen that world as their home world.
The first sentence: “Connor, when you see a server FULL means that the people who’ve chosen that server as theirs, or players who have moved to that particular server, have reached the cap…”
That sentence to me reads: When a server says it is FULL, it means the max number of accounts that are allowed to have that server as their home server has reached the cap.
Pretty clear to me that that response gave what the FULL status meant. The post was ages ago and things may have changed. It would be beneficial if a Dev could give an updated, clear, and explicit answer to what FULL means. And then update that tidbit somewhere and not have it only be on the forums where it gets buried.
And that it was an attempt to maintain WvW population balances (failed, obviously).
People transfer, ANet decides X number of people have bought the game so the caps get increased etc.
Hi Seera,
I know you mean well and I dont think this is even worth an argument. The dev respondedto as false statement that popularity was only depending on people who choose that server first (keep in mind it was right after launch and many rumours existed). The Dev only said that it isn’t true that it was the case, but it was depending on the amount of people that choose that server as their own at start or moved there later. She never said wether activity off those users is measured, cause it wasn’t part of that discussion.
After that I have seen for myself that in the middle off the night (several times) normally full servers would change to highly populated and highly populated servers change to medium. This has also been reported by many others and the dev we are quoting isn’t saying that they are dillusional.
So my advise to the OP is a valid one. get tuesdays update as soon as it is available, and check if you can change. if that fails, set your alarm clock in the middle of the night and try then.
Arise, opressed of Tyria!
Yes, unless it is a white item, ignore the warning, but it will be accountbound. I have done it several times.
@Donari, imagine the following scenario.
You got a soulbound legendary twilight. You use a transmutation stone to transfer the skin to a white item. this is accountbound and you can put it in the bank. You withdraw it on a different character and use a transmuation splitter. The result will be (besides the white item) the original legendary, with full stats, and abillity to change stats. it will be accountbound AND soulbound on equip.
ow and ignore any shaking hands in the process
Arise, opressed of Tyria!
I take time to make a build, and then I would like to use it.
<snip>
For those who didn’tplay GW1, in GW2 it would translate as follows:
Don’t use boons. Mallyx removes your boons and deal near-lethal damage
Don’t use conditions. Mallyx feast on it and fully heals himself to full healthThis is a great example of why the CDI is so useful. It brings players together to talk about things that we might not have thought about alone. If use-the-build-you-want is the rule, then “don’t apply boons or conditions” rules out a huge variety of builds. Guardians would be totally left out, even on a direct damage build, because of virtues. Tons of traits have passive conditions on crit, so that’d make those players completely useless.
Anyway, as somebody who does Fractals occasionally, but would like to do them more (if just a few things were different), I’m very excited for this CDI. I’ll wait for the official thread to share my ideas. :-D
I did say I translated his skills a bit to GW2 language. It actually did it with removing enchantments. The bottom message is that it took several weeks before the first group killed him, and a lot more before people found optimum solutions, unfortunally, the meta at the end was to pull him away by skipping the video and running out so half of his abillity’s where off. Thats why I also added the skipping video bit.
But the thing is it required out of the box thinking cause all known tactics where useless against him
Arise, opressed of Tyria!
Besides the looks.
If you like fractals, get the gear
If you don’t like fractals don’t bother.
The amount of effort (as you are seeing) is a lot, the reward outside fractals is a little over 5% increase on armor and stats. so the effort/reward ratio is off there in my opinion. The only benefit is the infusions slot to get higher AR. As I understand, even at the now highest level, having AR on all your equipment helps a lot, so if they open up more levels (and I think they will) it will really start to matter.

suggestion: blocking goldsellers on report
in Account & Technical Support
Posted by: mercury ranique.2170
Hi,
I’m not fully sure if this is the best place for this suggestion, but might I suggest to implement a feature that automatically blocks goldsellers when your report someone for selling gold but with the possiblillity for a GM to unblock.
The reason I’m asking is that I know that you are quick to suspend goldsellers. This is one of the reasons (besides being bad people) they hack accounts to use for their misdeeds. Often, when the action to suspend is taken, the real owner reports in and gets control back over his/her account.
By creating such a possibillity, the victum off the hack has a new chance without being on a few 1000(00??) block lists of individual players.
It is also a service to the reporters that they don’t have to report AND block and doesn’t end up with a blocklist of several pages long.
Last of all a remark. As you might have noticed I took a few weeks break on these forums. I also noticed that in those days I did not get any pm from a goldseller. As soon as I started posting here again they started again. Could it be that they are harvesting accountnames here?? maybe something to investigate?

How are new players going to do there map completions with no LA?
This has allready be answered. You can still enter the map and do map completion, it will be just harder (there are some unanswered questions if the reward is being upgraded, but that is currently unknown).
Keep in mind the town will be destroyed, the map will be there, it will just be….different…

This is not a bug, The Debuff is working as intended.
The DC-issues are recognised and being worked on. So in this case I would recommend to make a suggestion in the pvp forum to change the dishonorable debuff system as follows (well it would be your suggestion I don’t play PvP, but this is what I think would be fair)
1: when Anet recognises that they have server issue, all dishonorable statusses are removed.
2: when there are extended periods of server lags, anet has the abillity to change the system temporarly that you have 4-5-6 or even more penalty’s
Arise, opressed of Tyria!
I believe the actual Dev response was that it is a combination of the two, Accounts associated with the server and active players at that time. It was long ago, and unfortunately, with the Search function broken, difficult to find again.
This is why the population cap is raised periodically.
Use Google. Just type in “site:https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum” without quotes to search just this forum.
That’s what I did and found the same post mentioned above.
And remember that people could be transferring off of a particular server as well. So it does still pay to periodically check a server’s status.
I think that IC’s information is the right one and yours is slightly off.
The status is based on the total amount of players that are currently using that server as their homeworld AND the amount of people activly playing there at the moment. Thats why so many people have reported a small window in the middle off the night where a server would change from full to highly populated.
Besides, such a system would make the most sense.
Arise, opressed of Tyria!
Glory booster you got from ingame rewards are hopefully not going to be replaced by pick your own booster. I have no interest in PvP and have been deleting 100’s off these glory booster. If they suddenly where all changed in something usefull I would feel very sick and prolly quit this game.
Different story would be if you bought a lot of glory booster from the TP. I can’t speak on behalf of support, but if the time is there I think you have some good reasons to ask for a gemrefund.
Personally I think it is a bit early to worry bout this cause we don’t know yet what the new reward system for sPvP will be So they might as well be introducing a new currency and change the glory boosters to boosters that improve that. or for example, if PvP matches are going to reward gold that you can use to buy the new pvp and pve mixed equipment, they could change the boosters to gold find boosters (pvp-only). Cause they haven’t announced the new system yet, I think it is premature to discuss this or have worries bout this.

Hi,
I have a request for a workaround for the search function. Due to good old google the issue is limited at the moment. The only real issue is when you are looking for a specific develloper response. You often don’t remember who said it and what they said, but in discussions with other players it helps a lot when you can find a statement from a dev.
(Often you guys have arguments that are hard to push aside )
So work around would be to add the word ‘dev’ or ‘Develloper’ to a post, this so google picks it up and make it easier to search. For example the last time I needed a response from a dev was when I was looking for a response bout what a full server actually means. If this was implemented, and when I look/search for ‘GW2 full server dev’ the top hits would be the threads with a dev response.
For example a change to the left block of info. e.g.
’
Gaile Gray
ArenaNet Support Liaison (dev)
’
(you can even make the word dev in the same red colour of the background so it isn’t even visable)
Arise, opressed of Tyria!
If it’s an option – being on and transferring right after a patch (which forces everyone OFF) can make things easier. Next one is this Tuesday, the 18th (as in Pacific Time Zone) – IIRC it’s usually around 8-10 am (PST).
Full or Not Full is NOT related to the number of people actively playing. It’s a measurement based on the number of people who have chosen that world as their home world. It counts the people who only played one day and decided they didn’t like the game. It’s been mentioned by Devs on this forum.
Can you please link to your source AND explain why many times it has been reported by players that they could enter on odd times??
I’m not saying your wrong, but my personal experience and that of many reports I have seen are not inline with what you are saying.
edit: I think I found your source: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Server-Populations/first#post703192
’
when you see a server FULL means that the people who’ve chosen that server as theirs, or players who have moved to that particular server, have reached the cap, independently of where did they create their accounts.
’
This was a reaction to false information that the cap was decided by people who choose a certain server as the first one they every chosen (registered the account on it). It doesn’t say that account that haven’t been in use for a while are counted for the cap.
The full mechanic is unclear, but as said, many people have reported (and I have seen it several times as well) that at odd times, the status full changes to highly populated. The window can be very small though.
The tip bout doingit directly after update is a good one, but given the situation that many people are likely going to try out the new content asap it likely is a small window, if your internetconnection is slow, its likely to be closed by the time you get through the update proces, but it is worth the try.

Hi and welcome back,
I would recommend to delay this decission, but start a new character (you should have 5 slots) to get the hang on the game again. By doing so you can re-train yourself on how to do story, craft, gather mats, do events and mapcompletion. The class doesn’t matter, but I would recommend a different one. When you are level 10 I would recommend to try your old characters. After playing both a bit you can make a good decission on wether you want to keep working on your new character or your older characters.
Be carefull in deleting characters, specially the first one. When a character has it’s birthday (365 days after creation) it gets a birthdaypresent. The 1th year present is a scroll that leveled any character below level 20 up to level 20. a birthday booster (big booster that last 24 hours (in game hours, so only when logged into the character that have it running) and a unique miniature (Queen Jennah).
In GW1 it was tradition that when a character turned 2 years, a different present was rewarded.

Thank you Seera bout the tip for liquid WXP, im gonna save up my laurels, cause I have more then enough BoH.
Arise, opressed of Tyria!
I think you mean Chaotic Interruption??
Not being an active PvP-player and just looking at the trait effect I think it highly depends on the order of the conditions applied.
The 2 seconds chill doesnt have any effect over the 2 seconds immobilize cause the they are active at the same time (and no use for 66% speed reduction if you can’t move at all).
The 3 seconds blind is only effective against casters cause melee is immobilized anyways. The crippled last 3 seconds but is as the freeze mostly useless, besides the last second.
But, if the secondary effect is always the last applied condition it is an excellent cover for the immobilze. removing multiple conditions is always more pricely then removing one.
Off course for the rest its effectiveness highly depends on the rest of your build. If you hardly ever interupts, then its no use.
Arise, opressed of Tyria!
search pricerunner there are companies that sell it for less.
be carefull though with not authorized retailers though. Two recent examples that popped up on the account forum.
1: player bought the game months ago, asked for a refund, bought the game through an unauthorized retailer and attached it to the old (closed) account. Support directed him to the retailer to get a refund and retailer refused.
2: Player bought the game through an unauthorized retailer and he/she sold him a used productkey.
Bottom line, cheap unauthorized retailers are cheap, but not always trustworthy.
All of the ones posted by these search motors are reputable companies. They filter out ones that don’t live up to their claims. It is also up to every individual to check refund policies of anything you buy.
I have to disagree with you. The lowest price for GW2 is for a company they don’t trust (they are warning you but many people ignore those warnings).
Also, refund policy’s are often very bad when you buy cheap. My advice is to watch the official retailers in your country and wait till they have a discount, or when GW2 has it’s own discount.

Arise, opressed of Tyria!
Im mostly a PvE player. And the one thing I do not find enjoyable is fractals.
The first reason for this is the level system. I don’t have the illusion it will be removed, but it works towards elitism and I personally dislike that. Also the fact that you need specialised equipment that you need to gather through many other resources is something I don’t really fancy. However, I don’t think those things will change. the exit on that speedway is behind us and no use looking back.
My dislikeness off the fractals however is also bout the difficultlevel or more the tricklevel.
Fractals to me have a high level of learn the right tricks and tweaks. The need to bring a certain weapon(hammer) to break seals, and pass that hot potato round is a kidsgame and has less to do with traditonal MMO’s. Also I dislike being forced to use different skills. I take time to make a build, and then I would like to use it. Play as you are is important for me and I dislike that in fractals I’m forced to be a dolphin or use a hammer.
So what would I like to see in future fractals??
Better and harder to kill enemy’s. Make it less a game of tricks and more a game of player skill. A fight like Mallyx would be a great example (without the video skipping trick).
For those who didn’tplay GW1, in GW2 it would translate as follows:
Don’t use boons. Mallyx removes your boons and deal near-lethal damage
Don’t use conditions. Mallyx feast on it and fully heals himself to full health
He teleports you to random locations in the map
If you have light or medium armor he pulls you to him all the time
He knocks you down for 10 seconds (and don’t use stabillity cause it is a boon).
On top of that there are some area effects, constantly active. The first is +10% cooldown on all skills. The second is a constant torment (so if you move you damage yourself), the third is that you have a 50% change to miss and the last is that you take near lethal damage if you have a succesfull block or evade.
He has a big healthpool and he hits really really hard.
So, if you never have killed him and you read this you will imagine he is impossible to kill. The opposite is true, but it requires very special tactics and teamwork.
I’m not saying they should introduce something that hard, but am using it as an example where it comes to down to understanding of skills, traits, stats and weapons to puzzle a way where it is doable to make the kill.
tl;dr – to grasp my interest in fractals, make future fractals where the tricks are less and the fights harder and more technical.

Warrior is a selfish dps-machine
Ranger is a selfish dps-wannabe
Necromancer is fun, too bad conditions are limited (the amount of stacks of e.g. poison is very quickly reached, specially in world events)
Thief is nice to supply stealth to your fellow players, but is a bit weak in selfsupport.
Elementalis and engineer have some pretty nice support mechanism. Engineer is more versatile but difficult to master. Ele has better dps, but can be squishy at the start.
Guardian is the best in a supportive role and are actually still good in DPS
Mesmer is helpfull….To portal people to jumping puzzle chests. Also good in WvW to hide in an enemy keep when it is bout to be taken and then when the keep is taken and the main enemy force is gone, to quickly portal your forces back in and retake.

The wurm in bloodtide is permanent.
The twisted marionette is announced as a new world event, but the achievements are listed as living story so not a clue if it remains.
The edge of the mist is likely to stop this tuesday cause it is all about setting the stage for whats starting then.
It doesn’t really have any purpose to find out that Lion’s Arch is the target, while it is allready destroyed.
As said during the first CDI a lot of promises are made by the devs. So shooting that living story is not permanent is a bit premautre. If they keep the twisted marionette in and the jungle wurm, and off course whats happening this tuesday (wich is permanent) means that it isa lot different. But too early too judge.

search pricerunner there are companies that sell it for less.
be carefull though with not authorized retailers though.

Good to know thank you. Does not work on ele. I did set my interface size to maximum and that makes it easier.
It does work on an ele. To make sure I jsut tested, both on an enviremntal weapon and on a summoned weapon, pressing ‘^’ dropped it and put my staff back.

Eternity has footfalls, but not special projectiles.
afaik, it only differs from sunrise/twilight in the skill whirling wrath. forthe rest it is the same.
To OP. Eternity has a trail. it is the same as sunrise at daya and the same twilight at night. It has its unique footsteps.

Swap weapons (in my case it’s ‘^’)

The exact time for an update is never announced. This to avoid people logging in at the exact right time and crashing the system. Most content updates are on tuesdays, once every two weeks. The next one is expected the next tuesday. Mostly they are round 6pm UTC
Only at that moment the release notes are published.
Hotfixes are never announced and happen at random. They do not take the servers offline to update the game. Players online get a message that a new update is available. You can decide for yourself to log out to start updating, or you will be forced when you decide to change map (loading screen) or after a certain amount of time has finished (regular maps 1 hour, instances like dungeons I think is 5 hours).
lordkrall has linked to the info bout the next big update.
As for class updates. Those updates are put up for comment by the community in the profession balance subforum. Currently in this thread: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/balance/Feature-Build-Balance-Preview/first#post3568077
Also other things are often announced (e.g. the announcement of removing Glory from PvP as a currency). Some good places to keep watching those are www.guildwars2.com or wiki.guildwars2.com

As far as I know, and also according to the wiki the items are accountbound. This means you can put the armor in your bank and pick it up there with another character to use it.
For more information bout your bank and where to find it, check this page: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Banker
