Play the long game. Let ele fall gracefully back into the trash bin, and they’ll put out some buffs next quarter. They’re getting better at actually putting out balance changes, so it won’t stay in the trash bin for too long.

I think the Cleric Amulet needed to go, they got rid of Soldier, Soldier made you yourself sustainable but with Cleric people could heal 5 door breakers faster than a trebuchet could damage them. Usually hitting them twice with it is enough, a healer could pretty much negate the trebuchet damage. Magi, well it has vitality instead of toughness and precision instead of power. I can imagine a lot of healers will pay the gold and unlock it. Would like to see it go as well as it has the same healing power as Cleric so could be used to keep enemy NPCs alive pretty much indefinitely. Either that or bring back cleric but nerf the Tempest and Druid healing abilities beyond recognition. Nothing wrong with making them able to heal so that door breakers can survive an extra hit or so from the treb but not much more than that.

That’s the thing I’m talking about! The amulet wasn’t the problem, it was the healing in STRONGHOLD. Wouldn’t it make more sense to fix STRONGHOLD than delete an amulet that was NEVER A PROBLEM in the history of this game?

So what you’re saying is, instead of changing the ele to fit in better with the world, you want the entire world to change so that it revolves around the ele.

The problem is Anet’s management. PvP and class balance teams are completely separate, so the only thing the PvP team can do is remove amulets. This is stupid.

Anyway, to answer your question, anything above 20k in a real raid setting is excellent. Anything below 10k is pretty bad.

the only thing that matters is your weapon being ascended
unless you’re condi, in which case even the weapon doesn’t matter

and it’s still not a big deal. I’d accept people in full exotics. The real issue is doing what you’re supposed to do. Gear quality is less important.

but yes, the primary purpose is to make your main damage spell, lava font, do 50% more damage by lasting 50% longer.

Also keep in mind when blasting: the blast finisher triggers the oldest field, so if there are other fields down, wait until the old ones disappear before using arcane wave.

marauder is indeed nice. 5% damage to bump 12k health to 16k is a good trade imo

Anyway, in t4 fractals power does 30% less, so you’re better off with condi or some hybrid, like flame legion runes. But if your party has full buffs (which is usually not the case) power won’t be that far behind. If you have a static group that provides buffs, you’re fine. But if you want smooth pug runs, you’re better off doing condi. In absence of full buffs, condi is almost as high as power to begin with even before the extra toughness. Power is stronger in raids because it scales way better with banners, spotter, frost spirit, quickness, etc.

Ele is very good in pvp. It is the #1 support class. Damage oriented builds, however, are bad.

Ele is very good in pve. #1 damage class. Can also support well.

Going in blind and figuring out things myself and not copypasting other people’s builds and strategies is how I like to do things. I like exploration, challenge, and a relaxed attitude. But there also needs to be improvement. If the other people aren’t willing to try to get better and take suggestions with an open mind (and a grain of salt), then that isn’t something I would want to be a part of.

Well every Class can tank but most Groups prefer Chronotanks because the Chrono DPS itself is kitten and you aren’t sacrificing any DPS by making the Chrono a Tank.

This isn’t actually true. A zerker chrono can do up to 12k dps (while providing buffs). And it’s not like a tank guardian or necro or thief suddenly drops to 5k dps just because they added a little toughness and defense. They can still do high damage.

And on that note, I wouldn’t use full knight’s to tank (or any knight’s at all, opting instead for crusader or cavalier for my toughness). You should aim for 1500 toughness. No one else should have more than that.

Sure, but pugs have a fetish for chrono tanks.

meaning 90+% of the time, they’ll want the tank to be a chrono. just because that’s how everyone else does it. even though a guardian tank would probably be better for most groups

Revenant goes power in pve. Its conditions consist of a lot of confusion and torment, which are good on players but not very good on mobs, as they don’t move and attack nearly as frequently.

As for healing armor, the only thing I can recommend for a guardian is crusader. when mixed with marauder. It’s a rather nice combo that makes you very tanky while still pumping out reasonably good damage.

But people don’t like guardians in general in high level fractals, because the mobs steal boons, and mobs with retaliation will wipe your party’s eles really fast. It can do up to 800 damage a tick. several times a second. And having a guardian in the party makes it much harder to not apply retaliation. Guardians spew light fields everywhere, and blast finisher on a light field = aoe retaliation.

Protection and regen?

Regen kinda sucks without healing power. It’s one of the few things in the game with good healing power scaling. 130 per tick from a rev vs 500 per tick from a magi’s ele.

Protection is great though, if you don’t have a guardian.

all damage multipliers in GW2 are multiplicative.

No, I’ve tested it. They are additive. Damage modifiers of the same type are added together first. For example, +damage and +critical damage (found on some thief traits) are multiplied, but +damage and +damage are added.

Yes. If you do power damage. Almost all of the damage to keep constuct is in that burn phase. Much more than half. So it’s better than sigil of force for that fight.

Not really. Ele’s in a weird spot were that sigil gets the added bonus of tempest defense, so the synergy is too good to pass up.

This is…wrong. The fact that ele already has a similar bonus just makes it less effective, proportionally. As in 1.2 -> 1.3 is an 8.3% increase, while 1.0 -> 1.1 is a 10% increase.

fresh air and lightning whip were both buffed a bit anyway. wouldn’t be surprised if non-tempest fresh air outdamages it now.

It has excellent burst though. Can’t beat ring of fire→phoenix→fire grab for burst.

And yea, several of our more serious raiding Guildies are telling folks to roll an Ele and never look back but kitten ed if I cant get past being so squishy. Maybe dust her off and practice dodging for life…lol?

Just grab some marauder. You won’t notice any difference in damage (except maybe an increase from being alive more). Full zerker is for chumps. I raid with 15k health.

But yes, ele has good ability to avoid damage. You shouldn’t be getting hit too much.

Staff ele has the most boring dps rotation in the game though imo.
but maybe that’s just me. I don’t like rotations

Enrage timers are fine as is. Just beef up pressure on survival and mechanics. Right now if you just do the mechanics, you don’t even need a real healer even with everyone running full glass. And the mechanics are each pretty simple by themselves. The challenge in raiding is really just getting all 10 people on the same page.

d/w is easier to work in healing and defense into a dps rotation, and it has much more consistent dps, and it’s easier to dodge attacks, since it has mobility skills and freedom of movement during a normal damage rotation. It’s just more versatile in general, outside of being limited to short range.

And yeah, d/w has amazing healing. much better than staff. water 5->4->3(blast)->earth 4 (blast) = massive heal combo, like having a second healing skill. What d/w doesn’t have that staff does is condition clear.

The only thing I play is ele, and I have had no problems.

If you were to only play two classes, I’d say ele and chrono. You will have a spot in every group.

Herald + reaper is alright. You should be ok with that, but you won’t get into every group.

Why not just, say, camp fire?

If you’re using a staff and trying to do as much dps as possible, you do camp fire, because the other attunements on staff have very bad dps.

Otherwise you swap attunements to make the best use of your cooldowns, or to access utility in other attunements. For instance, if I’m dual wielding daggers, air has the most dps on the autoattack, but fire has some hard-hitting skills with long cooldowns, and earth has one too. and water has a heal and a blast finisher*. So I might start in fire, use my 3 burst damage skills, then swap to earth, use that big damage skill, then swap to air and lightning whip until some cooldowns are ready.

There are also a lot of traits that work with attunement swaps. Like there’s an air trait that does damage to your target when you swap into air. And a trait that recharges air attunement swap cooldown when you land a critical hit while not in air. And a trait that grants you fury every time you swap attunements. And so on

*And if you don’t know about finishers, that’s one thing you should learn. Most notably for ele, blast finisher in fire field grants 3 stacks of might.

Ele used to be more difficult to play before HoT, but tempest makes it pretty easy.

In any case, pve staff dps ele is very simple. You only need to press 3 buttons. Lava font→ meteor shower. wait 4 seconds. lava font→overload. wait 4 seconds. lava font on cooldown until meteor shower is off cooldown. repeat. Congratulations, you have the game’s top dps.

If you want to get extra fancy, add ice bow, and for the lava fonts with no channel in between, press autoattack to cancel the lava font’s aftercast delay.

Now, support ele isn’t nearly as simple. Ele in any vs player context is not simple at all.

Normally I put chronotank and rev at top, 3 condi and heals in middle at least for vg and the remaining dps down on the 3rd group. But some people like to have seven people in one group.

chronotank usually has 100% boon duration already and doesn’t need a rev in group
non tank chrono is the one that needs the rev

Anyway the optimal subgroup arrangement will vary depending on your team composition and strategy.

WvW builds aren’t great for PvE. There is a lot of utility that’s good in big fights against other players that is basically useless in PvE, and a lot of utility that’s amazing in PvE but useless in WvW. For instance, Sandstorm and Dust Storm are great defensive skills for dungeons and fractals but useless in WvW. Unsteady Ground and Static Field are great in WvW but of much more limited use in PvE.

Anyway most of that’s pretty easy to swap out, to get a more PvE optimized support build. The bigger issue is that you’ll be doing 1/4 the damage of a dps ele (yes, I tested it.) even if you’re doing a max dps rotation and never using any support skills. So you essentially do basically no damage in actual play, and no one’s going to appreciate that.

My go-to build for being tanky and providing a lot of support while still doing damage is a burning-focused build. In a rotation that provides near permanent protection and tons of heals, it does about 55% as much dps as a full glass ele. Grants decent might too. And if I don’t need quite that much defense, I swap out earth trait for fire, and then I can get 70% as much dps. Still has just as much healing (very slightly more, actually) but less protection uptime, and it also gives the group pemafury. And because it’s condi, in high level fractals, where mobs have more armor, that 70% becomes 100% as much dps as a glass zerker ele. So it’s my 150 AR gear set.

Any power build with as much tankiness and healing ability will have way less dps.

Answer is no
not only does it not stack up to as much damage as burning, but also it takes forever and ever to ramp up, so anywhere outside of a raid or high level fractal boss, by the time you’ve stacked up your bleeds, the target was dead a long time ago

Also even in a full bleeding build, with 100% bleed duration and 20% burn duration, signet of fire is better damage than signet of earth.

Anyway the main issue is the ramp up time. In a burning build you can burst stuff down like a zerker, but you can’t do that in a bleed build. Dust storm, for instance, does amazing damage if positioned to hit the target all 6 times (usually only hits 3 times though). But. It takes 26 seconds to do all its damage

yes, but it’s better dps to cast burning speed in between. You can swap back to air as soon as the animation for it starts

but no, even with permanent alacrity, you still have at least 0.5-1.0 sec between when the overload AoE stops and when you can start the next one. The charge up time is 6 sec without alacrity.

Aura on overload and stability are in different slots. You take both of them.
Protection on overload is a minor trait.

And because the dude above didn’t mention it in the (kind of faulty) list:
Every time fire/air/tempest fresh air swaps to fire, it gets a fire aura.

well you have 5 blast finishers with s/f and arcane
your main ones, in fire, dragon’s tooth and phoenix; then 1 in water, comet; and 2 in earth, magnetic wave and evasive arcana (aka dodge roll)
Also Hurl (earth 2 chain skill) is 5 projectile finishers, so it’s also good in a fire field.

The simplest thing is to just cast dragon’s tooth and then put a flamewall under it, and phoenix into it, and then dragon’s tooth again. 9 stacks of might and good damage.

If you want to get fancy, cast dragon’s tooth before dropping the flamewall, and then phoenix into the flamewall, dodge roll for some burn stacks, cast another dragon’s tooth, swap to water, comet, swap to earth, dodge roll into the field again for another blast, and use magnetic wave. 18 might. Then rock barrier/hurl and 2 autos and back to fire.

Also this is of course all assuming you’re in melee. If your target is at a distance, you aren’t in range of the combo’s AoE, so it’s all moot.

As for hybrid burn and bleed, ele is much better at burns than bleeds. I use bleeds just to fill in while fire is on cooldown. But if you really want to make bleeding a focus, take scepter/dagger and ice bow.
