the nerf of steal on thief

I don’t mean yesterday as in “yesterday”, in the latest patches, where they also added to the war on shake it off to remove 2 condies, so please don’t take literally “yesterday”, but it was in the last couple of patches. steal used to deal around 4.5k, as a thief u calculate every dmg u have, ur too squishy when playing zerg 1 mistake and ur dead. this was compensated with the dmg it had, which is now lowered to 1.4k on steal.
but yesterday we noticed heavily, i’m in a guild with 20 thieves, we discuss those skills a lot.

Four months ago = yesterday.

Don’t say yesterday and expect people to know you mean it “metaphorically” or whatever you wanted it to come across as.

Aside from that, most classes try to build around 18-22k health. 4.5k is essentially 25% of our life pool as an instant cast skill from 1200 range. Where it’s at now is fine.

Spend a lot of time in dueling servers and fight against people that are a lot better than you. I’ve been playing ranger since launch and the majority of my time in game has been spent dueling. I can take breaks of months at a time and when I come back I’m still able to beat everybody simply because of all the practice I’ve had.

If you want to get good at ranked, get good at 1v1s. If you can’t fight, you won’t be able to help your team.

I never really like the whole “play your way” mentality where people who don’t know what they’re doing just throw together a crappy build and expect to be able to compete vs. other players. You can play what you want, dps, physical, condi, support, whatever… but don’t think you’ll be able to fight against players who specifically spent the time to optimize what they are using. In fact, I don’t know of any game that works that way…

As for GW2 as a whole, it WAS a lot better at the start. A series of nonstop bad decisions since release by Anet has driven away most of the players I’ve known over the years. It’s now super grindy with flashy, nonrealistic skins, toxic players, and super stale combat.

I could deal with everything else but Anet nerfs everything to the point where its like “I remember when I used to be strong, and other people were strong, and it was fun.” But now its like “Everything feels so weak now, its not fun anymore.” Not to mention that everyone has been using the exact same builds since HoT came out. There was 10x more build variety pre-hot but that was killed off.

If the combat became more engaging, I’d probably play again. If not, I’m not reinstalling.

It’s a condi weapon. Anet doesn’t know what they are talking about. MH Axe has never been used for power and never will be.

Mainhand axe is a condition weapon… not this weird hybrid weapon Anet keeps trying to push on us.

You think Axe is only a condi weapon because of bleed from Splitblade and Winter’s Bite. Meanwhile, the AA always been power focused and even more with the trait.

The problem is that SB is a 900 range condi weapon and there is no 900 range power weapon. Same with melee range, you only have Sword as a MH for power. I guess their only way to make it mesh together is to make Axe hybrid. Ranged power AA (Ricochet), Melee condi (Splitbade) and both (Winter’s Bite).

The buffs, even if small, are welcomed. Ranger Axes still need buffs, but I think it’s on the good direction. If only they could make Path of Scar more reliable and with a bigger radius, then do something about Whirling Defense stationary problems.

At least in PvP and WvW, no one uses MH axe for its autoattack. In fact, there are only a handful of weapons in the game that are used mainly for their autoattacks but MH axe isn’t one. The most damaging skill on MH axe is Splitblade and it’s used for the bleeds, not the physical damage.

Shortbow autoattack is also very effective with Sharpened Edges, Sigil of Earth, and Sharpening Stone. These give SB the potential to apply 4 stacks of bleed with each shot.

I actually used OH axe a lot back before they increased the projectile speed. I found that it was actually easier to land when it moved slower because you had time to reposition yourself so the return axe would connect.

The problem with Poison Master is that it competes with Empathic Bond and Wilderness Knowledge. The other two will always have preference over PM because of the utility and defense they offer against conditions.

Aside from this, a measly 2 stacks of poison every 16-20 seconds and a 25% buff to poison damage is not worth a Grandmaster trait regardless.

A good change would be to move Poison Master to the Grandmaster Minor trait and instead make Bark Skin the grandmaster in its place.

Bark Skin:
Reduce the duration of all conditions on you.
You and your pet take less damage as long as you have none of these conditions.
Bleed
Poison
Burning
Duration Decreased: 33%

or it could have a more interesting effect to fit the name:

Bark Skin:
Immune to damaging conditions.
When a condition is applied to you, take 200 damage

The problem with MH axe is that it doesn’t have any movement skill, and our offhand weapons don’t provide any movement either after the Stalker’s Strike range nerf. If a player uses MH axe, they are stuck with a low mobility, low defense weaponset for 9 seconds.

I thought it could be kinda OP but if you consider the kitten short stunbreaks on rev legend swap plus the fury and the condi cleanse they can get from this in one traitline i thought this would be fine with 15s^^

Not to mention warrior’s 10 second cooldown Outrage and thieves’ 15 second cooldown Bandit’s Defense.

A very nice change to mention would be reducing the cooldown of Lightning Reflexes to 15 or 20 seconds when traited to better compare with other similar skills.

Also it might be worth noting that using Trap utilities really cuts down on the player’s survivability. What do you guys think of a “Trapper Kit” that has Spike Trap, Flame Trap, Viper’s Nest, Frost Trap, and Smoke Trap? This would allow for additional utilities whilst not sacrificing damage.

A link to the build on http://en.gw2skills.net/editor/ would be easier for people to look at. More experienced players will want to mouse over the skills rather than watch a video of someone else mousing over them.

The gameplay video looked fine but a little more self sustain would be nice. I liked this build back when I used to play:

Zephyrs speed: This trait gets a 30s ICD (2 pet swaps) and activates Quickening Zephyre on pet swap instead of just plain quickness. This synergizes with survival trait and breaks stun.

I like the idea of Quickening Zephyr activating on pet swap a lot. The problem with a 30 second cooldown is that only 1 pet would ever really get the quickness. The 15 second cooldown synergizes with our current pet swap cooldown and it feels smooth because of this.

If I had to choose between Quickening Zephyr on a 30 second cooldown or our current Zephyr’s Speed, I’d choose our current one unless they made Quickening Zephyr on a 15 second cooldown with 3 seconds of quickness, super speed, and break stun to match the duration on the current values.

The reason why the majority of people don’t take Marksmanship and/or Skirmishing is because the same amount of damage could be gained through taking Nature Magic for the boonsharing.

Even though they all offer significant amounts of damage, Nature Magic also provides a lot of defense and support.

It’s like picking between damage or damage, tankiness, and support. It would make sense to pick the latter.

Although the changes I suggested are more drastic, they also provide interesting mechanics that would encourage the use of the underused traitlines in order to benefit from them.

For example, reducing the cooldown of Predator’s Instinct to 15 seconds and the duration of the cripple to 5, would still be a bad choice over Clarion Bond. The reason being that there are so many ways to avoid movement impairing conditions nowadays, a lot of condi removal is being thrown around, and Clarion Bond provides 15 seconds of fury, might, and swiftness to 5 targets as well as a blast finisher on a 30 second cooldown.

15 seconds of fury, might, and swiftness to 5 people + blast finisher on a 30 second cooldown beats out 5 seconds of cripple every 15 seconds any day of the week.

shadowpass.4236

I gotcha.

I like talking about this stuff so any input is much appreciated.

I quit this game about a year ago because the gameplay and build variety got very stale. It was boring to fight the same builds every time. Since I’ve been playing since release, even if I changed my build, I’ve already played every variation in the past.

These changes would breathe more life into the ranger class in my opinion and make combat a lot more interesting and engaging as a whole.

Every class has useless traits and abilities as well, and it would be very helpful to the game if other people had discussions like this in the other profession forums and voted on which changes would make it into the game.

Anet needs to take what the community says into account. They kinda just do their own thing without really caring what the playerbase has expressed feelings towards in the past (legendary medium armor trenchcoat).

By redoing a lot (or all) of the useless build options in the game, I believe that a lot of people who quit would return.

No one hates this game, it’s just gotten very boring over the years.

As for Strider’s Defense, my change was loosely based off of Daredevil’s condition clear on dodge as well. Then I realized that a Daredevil could clear 10 conditions every 10 seconds which far outclasses our Empathic Bond which doesn’t even clear, but rather transfers 3 conditions every 10 seconds to our pet. Maybe 1 condition removed from you and your pet every time you evade with a 3 second cooldown would be more balanced.

Also, any suggestions you guys have as well about traits/utilities/weapon skills that you have concerns with personally would be great to hear!

Traps triggering on downed bodies would be a nice change too. Trapper ranger was very effective but could never use the majority of its utilities once they actually downed a person. Granted in 1v1s this usually wasn’t an issue, and in 1vXs the traps would go off if another person tried to rez, but it would be a nice QoL change nonetheless.

Proccing on siege is a bad idea though in my opinion.

Thanks for the input guys! I’ll admit I don’t know a thing about PvE so any suggestions I make are solely based off of my experience as a PvP/WvW/Dueler.

Critical Eye essentially reduces all of your active cooldowns by a 1/4 if you hit a critical every second. This applies to both weapon skills and utilities (including heal and elite). It takes up a spot in Grandmaster for Skirmishing which competes with Quickdraw and Light on Your Feet. I find this worthy of a Grandmaster Trait because of its interesting mechanic to encourage high critical chance but still having competition with the other traits in the same tier.

Ambidexterity’s main change is the range increase. This allows for additional movement back to previous values before the nerf and would help dagger become a little more smooth. Stalker’s Strike used to be a movement skill. Currently, it can’t really close a gap or create one like it used to.

Good point about Poison Master.

No ones uses Shared Anguish or Invigorating Bond. I feel like these changes would actually improve their viability so they’d be taken in some builds over other traits in the same tier.

I feel like every traitline should have some form of condi clear. A sword trait is needed, I just haven’t had the time to add it in (which I’ll get to later). This is a good condi clear which would give it some use in builds. Nearly every build atm in PvP and WvW is Nature Magic, Beastmaster, and Druid because the other traitlines don’t offer any/as much sustain.

I like the CA changes, they would allow for a more fluid healer role rather than small condition clears and a burst heal every 15 seconds. Astral Force generation would need to be balanced so that it allows for a similar use of skills as before.

Longbow is probably fine. Barrage could be more interesting though.

Glass Arrows is a cool trait imo. GW1 had it and it has a niche use in fights.

Natural Healing also used to affect the player as well until anet fixed it. It was in the game for over a year and was actually the meta build for a while. Albeit it had lower values at the time for the player (healing for 44 health per second), but to put it into perspective, warriors get around 400 health per second from Adrenal Health when they use a burst skill in Berserker mode.

Useless Traits

shadowpass.4236

There are many traits for every class that simply go unused. For example, I’ve been playing ranger since release and have never used Predator’s Instinct.

Aside from this, many trait lines also have dominant traits that will always be picked over other options due to their strength. An example of this is Druidic Clarity.

In my opinion, the marksmanship trait line’s grandmasters are the most balanced. If you take a look at them, a longbow user would have to choose between Lead the Wind for cooldown and piercing, Remorseless for increased burst damage, or Predator’s Onslaught for synergy with Ancient Seeds.

They are called minor, major, and grandmaster for a reason. It would be nice if minors are cooldown reductions, majors are smaller passive effects, and grandmasters are more significant changes to skills that increase their power.

If this were to be put into effect, it would be interesting if a maximum of 3 traits could be selected per trait line, but without the restriction of 1 per tier. For example, 3 minors could be chosen, 1 minor and 2 majors, or 1 minor, 1 major, and 1 grandmaster.

This would allow someone to choose between cooldowns for multiple weapons/utilities, a cooldown and 2 passive effects, or a cooldown, passive effect, and larger effect.

Offhand Dagger #4 Range

in Ranger

Posted by: shadowpass.4236

shadowpass.4236

Offhand Training used to buff the range of this skill, enabling builds like shortbow sword/dagger condi ranger to work because of the increased mobility. A while back this trait was changed to Ambidexterity and no longer affect offhand skill range, therefore rendering this build fairly useless and removing it completely from the meta.

I believe buffing the base range of the #4 skill to previous values with the old version of the trait slotted would be a nice “buff” to the weapon and would be a well-received change.

Any thoughts?

I haven’t posted on the forums or touched Guild Wars 2 in a long time. But this thread made me decide to log back on and try to voice my honest thoughts and opinions.

For anyone who knew me in game, I mained a power ranger named S H A D O W F A L L since release. GW2 was probably my favorite game of all time and I stuck with it for as long as I could. However, I dreaded every single patch because I knew that ranger would get either:
a) terrible buffs while other classes received more significant changes, leaving me as well as many of my ranger friends feeling left out and disappointed, or…
b) an unnecessary nerf that left ranger asking “why, that skill had nothing wrong with it in the first place”

I remember back when each class had several actually viable builds, and tournaments were interesting because we could see different combinations of builds and how they all worked together. After HOT was released, I felt like a god. As a zerker druid, I was able to 1v3 consistently versus high level players in platinum and legendary, and although it was tough, it was probably the most fun I’ve ever had in the game because I knew that those fights pushed me to my limits and tested the skills I’ve built up over my long career in the game. Although unable to record, I did the second best thing and screenshotted all the compliments I received since they were so memorable to me.

Then the nerfs began. Skills and pets were stripped time and time again with each patch, leaving me with nothing but disappointment and fear for when Arenanet would release the next set of nerfs to further gut my favorite class. This gradually reduced the amount of fun I had in this game, as I felt a lot weaker than I did before, and further pushed into playing a style of druid I didn’t want to. Not to mention that no matter how hard I tried, I wasn’t able to pull off the same types of outnumbered fights and garner the same level of excitement that I was able to before.

The second video said it perfectly, "After a bad day at work, the last thing you want to do is work for your entertainment. But for competitive folk, that extra work IS the entertainment, also known as “the journey”. Then he talks some more about bad work done by the devs and says “but now it’s gotten to the point where highly respected pro players are literally calling the devs kittened”.

In my opinion, Arenanet took away our fun by “balancing” when they really should have been focused on making Guild Wars 2 entertaining and fun to both watch and play. As the guild leader of the largest all ranger guild in the game for a long period of time with over 250 members at our peak, I can wholeheartedly say that the general mood in the guild took a large hit after patches, and the excitement I saw in the game as a whole definitely reduced over time as a result of “balancing”.

Sorry for the rant guys. I am genuinely disappointed with what has happened to the game so far, and it has taken one of my favorite games of all time and turned it into something I don’t really want to even look at. That being said, if things really do improve, I will run back to this game in a heartbeat. My faith in Arenanet has fallen greatly but I hope they prove me wrong. And a good place to start would be to start watching these videos and take them to heart.

I’ve made a lot of great friends in this game, and although none of them play anymore, if they happen to see this, I wish you all nothing but the best.

tldr: repeated nerfs to everything across the board made this game boring and made myself feel at the same skill level as weaker players who didn’t have NEARLY the same amount of time and practice invested into ranger/druid and the game as a whole

- S H A D O W F A L L

p.s. something that really ticked me off was when Arenanet had a MASSIVE amount of players telling them that trenchcoats are EXTREMELY DISLIKED then them going ahead and adding it to the legendary armor because it fits in to their “silhouette”

in my opinion this was the biggest kick in the ass ever as it showed that Arenanet will do whatever they want even though the playerbase is telling them not to… I mean, I don’t even play this game anymore, and I only check back every few months to see if there have been anything worthwhile for me to look at and upon viewing the legendary medium armor and the reason behind it growing a kittening trenchcoat I laughed and said “didn’t think they’d ACTUALLY do that, another letdown…”

I posted this because my teammates really don’t have the skill to go up against higher tier players and its not fair to have blowout matches like these. Some players don’t deserve to be in legendary, they got lucky or carried by another legendary and it ruins the fun for people who are actually trying to have a good time. The game should match good players with good players, not good with bad, as that frustrates the good players since they are forced to play with really crappy teammates who have no idea what they’re doing.

Personally, I can fight esl players just fine, if you guys really want to test yourselves against me I’m all for it.

You really hurt the class with the last set of nerfs.

A huge part of our damage came from bristleback and smokescale, you nerfed the f2 on bb so hard. It can be completely avoided in 1 dodge and even if it hits it only does like 15-20% or (usually) less of a person’s health.

We don’t have enough condi clear anymore, so we have to take off beastmastery for wilderness survival, which is another big hit to our damage.

After you gutted Search and Rescue, I haven’t seen it used a SINGLE time so far. From a PvP standpoint, we don’t do damage, we are outsupported by tempest, and we are very vulnerable to condis without reducing our damage/survivability even more. Our job is to literally evade on a point for as long as we can while the rest of the team does the work.

Please revert these changes… its not even fair/fun to play Druid anymore. I’ve been a ranger main since release, but I’ve swapped over to necro since the last patch and haven’t looked back.

Patch Notes 5-17

Literally, every single time I see ranger in the patch notes, its never a slight shave to an overpowered skill. It’s a kittening nerf hammer on any skill that actually works well…

How many times have pets been nerfed so far?

How about reduce the healing on CA 2 and 3 instead of the condition clear (which is much more important), cooldown, and effects.

And just for the record, pets are still useless and die quickly in large scale WvW.

I really kittening hate the patches because nothing ever goes well for ranger. Disappointed again.

~snip~

and this comes from an unkillable druid/ranger like ur opinion means anything.

If you take a minute to even think about what he’s saying, you’d realize its coming from someone who has no idea how the game works.

Me, on the other hand, I multiclass, and although I do main Druid, I can use a variety of builds on multiple classes and still probably roll over you in game 1v1. Also, coming from someone who’s been maining zerker ranger (hardly called unkillable) since launch, my opinion means a lot according to your logic.

Before I start, let me just say that I didn’t even read your last paragraph, since I was basically facepalming and rolling in laughter by the 3rd.

As I was reading this, my jaw actually started to drop. What the hell are you saying? Literally everything you said made me ask, “Is this guy stupid?”

1. “The damage (on staff) is good not great”
– 5-13k damage on vault crits, half that on #3. Do you even play thief?
2. “why not add passive stealthy for the thief?”
You obviously don’t play thief. You want thieves to get randomly revealed while their in combat? Great. Cause that won’t kitten off 90% of the PvP/WvWers.
3. “Why not add if you complete a dodge roll on combat you gain stealth for 4 seconds”
- O.M.F.G. Do you know how ridiculous it would be to fight a daredevil. 3 dodges later, they have 12 seconds of stealth. That’s practically a 15 second cd shadow refuge.
4. “Sure you can expand your stealth via a trait, by one second? Are you kidding me? That’s a joke right?!”
- Do you realize how annoying this trait is to fight against? Do the words “perma stealth troll thief” ring any bells?
5. “Blinding powder should be 6 to 10 second stealth considering the cool down and the shadow refugee shouldn’t be seen by enemy players either considering I’m already stealth on the first place! That doesn’t even make any sense lol!”
- I can’t even comment on this, its THAT stupid.

Nice video mate! I haven’t said that in a long time.

I liked the music choices as well and props to the gameplay.

Although people might have trashed the way you played in the comment section/whispers, I noticed that you kite very well! There’s a difference between running away and kiting, and this was kiting for sure. If you’re NA, I’d be down for a duel. Hit me up anytime @S H A D O W F A L L in game.

I agree with some of your points Zenos. However, I can play around with most builds and do well though. This is what I used to blow through diamond and legendary pretty fast, though it may just be attributed to personal skill rather than the build, I felt that this was a solid alternative to the menders/paladin druid builds most people use.

I try to stay in CA as much as possible to keep Grace of the Land up on my team. Usually it does run down to 0 and its why I picked up Dolyak Runes. Also, because I’m in CA so much, conditions aren’t really a problem due to Seed of Life, so while Druidic Clarity is strong, I shouldn’t “maximize” my use of the trait at the cost of a higher uptime of 10% increased damage for my team.

Basically, between the glyph and CA, my team has 20% increased damage in team fights, with a lot of condition clear, aoe blinds, 50% damage reduction, and healing. Not to mention, I can still pump out high dps because of my pet. Basically, any time I’m in a team fight, my team has an immense amount of support.

I’m happy to see that people are making ranger videos. Personally, I’d rather have the classic menders staff druid rather than a berserker ranger. There are too many reflects being thrown around between focus eles, scrappers, and more… so the main source of your damage is taken out of account during those (long) period of times.

You will get caught easily without lightning reflexes as a zerker druid in team fights. You don’t have enough condition clear to survive immobilization + condi bursts.

However, if you are up for a 1v1 in game (zerker vs zerker), hmu. You are NA correct?

Good rangers cast seed of life where they are going to be when it pops… Casting directly on top of yourself is a bad idea. You have to time it so that you run/dodge through it when it pops. From what I understand, you didn’t use a mechanic well so it didn’t work for you, and then you say its not good. When on the contrary seed of life combined with Lunar Impact is one of the best ways to burst healing in an aoe for Druids.

Now, if you want to talk about being a target… channeling rejuvenating tides at bad times in a fight make you a giant one. Used correctly however, its good at supporting your team.
