It was worse in the previous system since you had to unlock the traits one by one (you could only respec trait points not traits and if you didn’t have traits unlocked then trait points are worthless). Skills were just like they are now (no refunds). Keep in mind that getting to 80 gives little less than 400 hero points so 60 per line isn’t a lot and can be further increased by doing hero challenges (which you would have done anyway to unlock skills and get map completion).

It is objectively an improvement. You might not feel it now because you may not have gotten to 80 and have most of your traits still locked.

So what ele doesn’t need a new offhand?

Did mesmer really need a new offhand given that it has sword, focus, torch, pistol? All good in various situations. Meanwhile the only viable mainhand is the sword.

At least ele has scepter which is a lot better than mesmer scepter. And dagger which is very strong.

Scepter is trash.

Mostly ditto for mesmers too.

Mesmers had 2 main hand weapons, 2 two hand weapons, and 4 (pistol, sword, torch, focus) off hand weapons and they got another off hand weapon.

Still they said that classes getting only an off hand would be compensated in some way. Chronomancer are compensated by insane versatility of the new F5 and other nice mechanics (much more interesting than dragon hunter and reaper even with much fewer skill).

Ele can hope for something more unique because of this. Still even an off hand is a lot of skills on ele.

It’s 60 total for all of them (easy way to check buy one and the next one will be the same price not more). Don’t worry you should have them all unlocked and any excess will be used by new skills and traits with elite specializations. Your skill points turned into Spirit Shards and you are not losing them.

Also it’s not like you can do anything else with hero points but unlock skills and traits. You also get more by doing skill challenges but won’t need to do them to get everything unlocked.

Your Skill points turned into spirit shards. You are not spending them unlock anything. The hero points you got were from leveling up enough to unlock everything if you are level 80.

If you have any hero points left you can always use them on the elite specializations.

I used to hate the idea of trinity in this game, but after playing it for a long time and then returning a trinity game, I realized just how amazing the trinity would feel in this game, and how much more engaged in the dungeons I would be.

I’m not actually asking for the change, but just pointing out that if the change ever happened, I wouldn’t be against it at all anymore.

I think that this is just a mechanics and difficulty issue really unless people think that it is impossible to have engaging content without Trinity.

We have had a lot of time to not only study and come up with best strategies for all dungeon content but also the time to develop any skills required to execute those strategies while taking minimum damage. It has become routine.

The "Trinity" and Viable Builds

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

The Trinity and gear dependency serve only to undermine the very nature of the active action based combat of gw2 that is lauded by many.

The shortcomings and problems that are touted against the current meta are almost always things that can be solved without the advent of the Trinity or remain and are exacerbated with the inclusion of Trinity.

Often enough they also fail to see the subtleties of builds. I don’t think any class is built purely for dps all or even most of the time. All of them sacrifice dps to enhance their utility and their active defense. A block, extra endurance, stun breaks, vigor are much more important to them than any healer or tank.

That’ll keep things fresher than introducing new borderlands every 2-3 years or so.

Thats seems to be what they are thinking a rotation. They just want to only have the new borderland with HoT’s release for a time because it’s new. I can imagine the complaints of how you can’t even play HoT content few weeks after after release.

WouldGW2 be more successful with HolyTrinity?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: KngGilgamesh.3481

KngGilgamesh.3481

It is really simple. If you like the current skill based combat system (i.e. mobility, dodges, etc.) then you should be against Trinity since it completely breaks this system (when it becomes required).
Trinity:

  • Makes roles rigid.
  • Makes gameplay stagnant, you can only do one thing at a time.
  • Makes team cohesion more fragile. People will blame each other for deaths rather than themselves.
  • Makes stats more important. This just compounds most other problems.
  • Makes skill (active defense) less relevant.
  • Devalues movement (same reason as active defense). Why heal when you can move away from attack? If you can’t move away from attack then why move?
  • Because of AOE range it incentivizes stacking more than zerker do since now you need to stack to survive (heals) as well as cleaves and to kill faster.
  • Mandates gear the same way zerker is now currently.

Trinity does not:

  • Fix conditions in PVE. This is a technical issue and would remain a technical issue even with dedicated required roles. Conditions may work little better if less people can inflict them but still in group play they will be as broken.
  • Make combat harder. The difficulty of encounters is a problem of mechanics, AI, and our optimized strategies and practice. Combat may even be easier with trinity since you as an individual only have one concern.
  • Create Diversity. It limits its more than anything else (reasons listed above). Professions
  • Makes teamwork better. It forces teamwork since people become dependent on each other. This is brute forced so will not work always be desirable. Currently you can get by if your team works but with Trinity you are as good as your weakest link. You can’t be the sole survivor who heroically completes the encounter.

A huge Charr army arrives with shiny new war machines (also Rytlock’s warband). We invade the crystal desert. Leadership conflicts arise within the huge army leading to some catastrophe which causes a need to have a Khan-Ur.

I never said there was no AI manipulation in trinity games, i said that the AI in trinity games are far more challenging than Non-Trinity mmos. EQ being the first Trinity mmo proves my point as well.

The argument i seen has been that AI in trinity mmos are just dumb. But i have shown that the Trinity Mob AI is more advanced than we see in Non-Trinity mmos. People used the argument of predictability, which is proven that in GW2 the mobs are more predictable.

Also somebody argued that trinity mmos are easier, but this is disproven by the fact that Trinity PvE in mmos like WoW and Rift, is far more challenging than anything we have in Non-Trinity mmos like GW2. No argument there.

i will repeat. Trinity/Non-Trinity, they both have mobs that are not Terminator smart, but trinity AI is still the lesser of the dumb two.

If that is so then why do you think that is? What makes Trinity AI better and how?

KngGilgamesh.3481

Why must Trinity be brought up again and again with no sound standing? Why are people so infatuated with gear stats in a combat system based on active defense and mobility? Why is stat diversity more important than build diversity?

I’m going to copy something I wrote on this on reddit few days ago (also wrote something similar on the forums in the trinity thread in the HoT forums…).

Stats don’t change gameplay roles only augment them. I don’t know why stat diversity is important…we should focus more on build and skills diversity (have bosses which may require us to bring more CC (kind of like Mai Trin) or more mobility (like the Anomaly) etc.). This is beneficial to everyone; it is more flexible, has more gameplay impact, doesn’t require alternative gear sets and so is more accessible.
In GW2 it is possible for people to simultaneously contribute to more than one role precisely because stats don’t effect skills that much. If a dps guardian’s aegis is not worse than a tanky/healer guardian’s then the dps guardian has no incentive to even use support skills and so limiting their playstyle flexibility.
Stats should serve two purposes only. They should be kind of like training wheels; i.e. you should be able to sacrifice your own survivability for more damage. This should be your choice rather than be be mandated by content. They should also serve to augment specialized roles (but these roles should be niche and rare never required (since that destroys diversity again)).
The problems currently in GW2 combat system (stuff that harms gameplay and build diversity) are (in no order):

  • Stacking: This is a mechanic and AI issue that trivializes gameplay and would be there regardless of stats.
  • Conditions: In pve they don’t work because of technical reasons. This limits diversity a lot. Having working conditions in group play opens a lot of possibilities for high toughness mobs.
  • Difficulty: This again is a mechanics and AI issue. PVE gets too easy too too fast and so people only use zerker gear. In the CDI for Raids the devs mentioned how they want to make content whose difficulty is based on knowledge of the team fight, then player skills, and then number of players and the gear that they have. Difficulty should be derived from mechanics of the fight not unavoidable damage.
  • The mobs are slow in both movement and attack speed so much of the stuff that would be effective against other players is not very effective against them (e.g. torment, confusion, chill, cripple, retaliation.
People claim that zerker being optimal everywhere is a problem. I disagree the problem is not that it is optimal everywhere but that it is optimal in roughly the same way. The same strategies mostly work everywhere and you rarely have to significantly change your builds. This is compounded because PVE is easy now with so much practice (AI change would be a great band-aid). The standard to effective zerker play should be higher (you should be more skilled to run zerker as currently it doesn’t require that much skill and so it is very prevalent in pugs).

Fixing these problems would make GW2 combat better not breaking one of the best combat systems because people don’t understand it.

Why is stat diversity more important than build diversity? Stats don’t change gameplay other than require less active defensive. Stats don’t make roles skills and traits do. This allows more diversity and flexibility than changing gears ever could.

-snip-

The problem we have is that how many stats do we have that affect dps?
pure physical dps 3 main power ferocity precision that affect two minor critical damage and critical chance
Dps condition 1 main condition damage 1 minor condition duration
And how many for healing?
1 main healing power
And how many for support?
1 minor boon duration

How in the nine hells are these 3 supposed to be able to 3 diffrent roles you can specialize in to group up?

I talked to maddoctor about this in another thread and someone jumped me for taking toughness as a selfish stat that boosted your support skills like guardians reflect wall.

How about a support main stat that affect how long your support skills last like all the relfect skills etc if you dont have this stat your dps wont go down and but you wont be able to support yourself or others.

Why should people thats pure dps be able to support aswell as someone who want to go full support? ( They have had their cake and eaten it to for quite long enough now)

Why is there no healing critical and condition critical minor stats?
I mean if you cut someones finger he bleeds alittle you cut someone artery vein that buggers going to bleed alot.

How about toughness reduced the chance to be critical hit same with vitality against condition criticals.

I wrote a bit on this on reddit yesterday but active defense needs to be as effective for zerkers as it is for nomads because if it weren’t and that difference mattered then the zerkers would have no incentive to bring support skills. (Why would a dps guardian use aegis if it isn’t effective since they don’t have a stat that boosts it?). This eliminates diversity not increases it. The great point about gw2 combat is the active defense making it weaker or unequal favors stats over skills. If you made active defense stronger for nomads ten it would be too effective and so trivialize gameplay. If you made it weaker for zerkers then it would harm build diversity and skilled gameplay.

Anyway why is stat diversity important? You yourself have mentioned that it really doesn’t effect much. Zerkers sacrifice survivability so that their skills do more damage and proc more. Nomads sacrifice damage for great passive defensive. Stats serve this purpose of managing passive defense and damage well. They also should only augment roles and should never define it. They can make roles easier or harder but never required. Stats don’t change gameplay a lot traits, utilities, and weapon skills do.

The problem isn’t that zerker is optimal everywhere but that the same strategies, builds and skills are optimal everywhere. Currently the standards at which zerker is viable is too low so it is easy to get away with using zerker gear for parties. This should not be the case everywhere; i.e. zerker should be viable everywhere (and if it is viable then by its nature it would be optimal or irrelevant(world bosses)) but it should be gated by skills required. Currently we have made pve much easier since we know all the mechanics and actively try to circumvent any that we can (stacking, LOS enemies). These are problems with mechanics and AI and would stay problems with any other gear types. Zerkers should not trivialize content as it so often can. This will drive the amount of zerker players down in pugs.

Encounter difficulty should never rely on stats of players but rather on their strategies and skills. A stationary slow instant killing attacks boss that you stack on and dodge once a while is no more fun that a stationary fast attacking boss that you stack on and heal damage once a while. The issues are mechanical and AI driven, the content is too easy now with zerkers and they are able to trivialize difficulties with brute force. Difficulty should be addressed by strategies not by stats. stats’s effect should be passive or else it harms skilled gameplay (if stats are needed to take skillful actions).

We can make defensive stats buff the durations of active defense but what does that really accomplish? If the difference are relevant for completion then diversity is ruined and if they are not relevant then well they are not relevant. The issues are related to AI and mechanics that allow us to trivialize gameplay with brute force. Force is not the problem but the weaknesses of mechanics and AI is that allows the force to be brute or unskilled.

The trinity

KngGilgamesh.3481

Roles are not dependent on gear in this game. They also are not exclusive; i.e. you can be both a healer and a dps role at the same time. There should never be a need to change your gear stats since they should not be needed for completion of anything. Changing gear sets only changes the numbers we see.

The combat system in gw2 relies on movement. It prides itself on it. We use movement in combat to avoid damages mainly. The more powerful support is the less movement we need to do. Too much damage also makes movement trivial (stacking). This is a problem with mechanics and AI that should be fixed.

Condition damage is another thing that needs to be fixed in group pve. That has it’s own technical problems but it is very much worth solving.

Gameplay diversity should come with the weapons, utilities and traits that you bring to a fight not from the stats. I am all for making movement more important for some bosses (the anomaly for example) and making players bring teleports, swiftness etc. That is fun and everyone can easily change traits/utilities and weapons without the costs of extra gear sets.

Marjory and Kasmeer might be be stronger than us. Certainly Kasmeer is a stronger mesmer than MC (then again probably all NPC mesmers are…Faolain, Queen, Anise, That SE boss and that bounty). Marjory has some tricks that Necromancers can’t do (don’t think they are quite the level of Traeherns pack of flesh golems).

DE with Glint and Without Logain were able to fight with Karalkatorrik; that’s quite an achievement but Glint was probably a big part of it.

The strongest character than we know in Tyria (ignoring Palawa Joko, Livia etc) is probably the Pale Tree by far and after her probably the Queen, Anise, then Traehern (with Caladbolg) then probably Faolain (certainly stronger than Caithe), Rytlock (probably stronger than Faolain when revenant), Zoijja (made glory of tyria), then probably Kasmeer etc. Some Fire Legion Shaman in there too. Most magic users are more powerful than non-magic ones especially magicians who are more indirect (mesmers, easy to make overpower in game).

Ele and engie will require more button presses and are more mechanically harder but they are the most versatile classes. Mesmers and Thieves require more timing and skill to play and are more specialized. It takes a lot of skill and luck to do great damage with mesmers (often things don’t last that long anyway). Mesmers are also probably the hardest class to play well in pvp.

I think elementalists would suit you best. They have among the best damage in the game (rivaled only by thieves but ele have better aoe and more versatile). They are also very squishy and so must be played well. 20 weapon skills also makes them versatile. D/F ele would probably be the fun for you. Staff probably has better damage but it’s play style is very very simple.

Engineers also have great damage (less than thieves and ele but more armor and health) and are probably the most versatile profession. They are full of surprises.

Generally for dungeons everything but necromancers are useful. Guardian, elementalists, and thieves are especially good (good damage and better support). Warriors, Rangers, Engie bring additional offensive support and do good damage. Mesmers don’t do good damage but can provide several types of support, some of which, like portal, are unique so they do well too. Everything is viable and adequate to complete content though. People usually desire warriors more mostly because they are simple to play, innately more forgiving and people have the misconception that they do more relative damage than they actually do.

In open world PVE everything is adequate everywhere, really you might want some movement speed to run faster (which is easier to do on some professions than others) but thats it really.

I went slightly ahead of you Dondagora:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/hot/Screencap-of-all-Revenant-skills/first#post4815153

To summarize:

-No vigor
-No evade skills
-No instant teleport skills
-No swiftness or 25% speed increase
-No invulnerability skills
-Little to no Protection or Regeneration boon uptime
-No stealth
-No non-target leap skills (besides Unyielding Anguish which seems more situational and more of a peel, a very strong one at that)
-Very little condi removal
-Lack of stun breakers

Out of combat field mobility or combat disengage is little to none.
If they don’t get to use Unyielding Anguish for melee attackers (or use it that often), they seem great focus targets!
UA seems ridiculously strong btw!

But as I said in the post I linked, we have yet to see other Legends and weapons!

And their other 2 trait lines.

Probably three if we include their specialization.
