taking things to an extent that is illogical, is illogical.
random elements increase variability and test more different types of skill sets. Its pretty hard to make something incredibly replayable without adding uncertainty. Dealing with the unknown, or having every playthrough be different does more for replayability than just having the same thing again and again.

Solving the same problem 100 times is not more of a challenge, or more entertaining than solving 100 different problems.

I am a proponent of more random elements, and unpredictability in fractals. It doesnt have to impede progress, adding random extra goals, events, and very different levels will make it a lot more entertaining and replayable. And fractals is definately the place for it.

If they wanted replayability they could for example add infinite scaling.

I don’t know how many times you have played fractals, but there definitely isn’t any unknown or different playthroughs. Even with rolling “fixed”.

As I have said before, in my opinion randomness doesn’t belong to a high end content. Eventually luck will be the deciding factor whether you can get through or not.

Look, I know you want to promote your “random extra goal” idea but could you please stop mixing it with discussion about rolling? There is a quite big difference between forced and optional randomness.

Holy hell, I’ve finally found someone with the same mentality as me. Hello!!!

I’ve been trying to push forth my ideas for implementing randomization methods into dungeons for a long time. Games are much more exciting when you have a whole world to explore and they lose their excitement when you have nothing new left.

Exactly what you said.

Content with great replay value MUST have an element of surprise. Uncertainty is a good thing and makes activities more thought-provoking and engaging rather than arduous and repetative.

And what if dungeons and fractals were truly random? There could literally be zero competition. Difficulty and length of every run would be affected by luck. Lupicus records already suffer from random mob behavior. Also if the content was hard enough, then there would be a risk of getting stuck if you get some hard events.

Do you realize how much content they would have to add to keep an element of surprise? Just few random events there and there wouldn’t do because you would have already seen all of them after couple of runs. If they just tweak some enemy parameters (color, amount) then it barely makes any difference.

Personally I would rather see them working on a more skill based content. Lots of encounters could use some extra mechanics to make them more complex. Also removing linearity would be a big step for competition as it would allow different tactics.

Yes, go to play group content and intentionally choose a worse option. They are just some random people so who cares if you make it harder for them. Even better if everyone wipes multiple times.

Timing on record runs

As long as old ways don’t give any advantage then they should be perfectly valid because they are comparable. If they do, then penalty of X seconds can be applied.

For example on arah p1, if you have timed a full run you can easily figure out time from first gate to last boss. If old record used sigil stacking then maybe like 15 seconds of penalty can be applied.

Bottom line is that new fractals will probably be really easy for scale 80 players and whole reset thing is just pointless slap in the face. We want challenge. Not some stupid grind.
All this time we have waited for challenge and now what? Grind to 50, figure out a hole in their system because they just can’t edit one line of code properly, grind to 80, notice that it’s not that hard and then get thrown back to 30 next year?

And please don’t give me this “instabilities will be hard and exciting”. It is aimed at casuals. We have no reason to believe they know how to make good content. And you will probably stop doing them one week later so why do you people care so much?

But I promise I will be very interested if you find someone with scale 80 who is excited about the new patch.

Greater penalties for Death

I actually agree with OP in most of the things he’s said.

It’s the primary reason why I want nothing to do with PvP on this game… there is nothing exhilarating about knowing that I gain nothing and lose nothing on the outcome of the fight I’m in. I want to risk not yawn.

In PvE the fact that you can die as many times as you want with no consequence other than having to waypoint (or wait for the others to get ooc if you’re in a dungeon) leads me to believe that part of the reason there are so many people reluctant to care about getting better at the game is because they’re not encouraged to. Players won’t care about survival if they don’t lose anything from death.

There’s a lot of upsides and downsides to games that have loss associated with failure, so it’s worth discussing instead of immediately dismissing like so many others have been on this thread.

Every pug secretly stacking passive defense and running away at first sign of wipe doesn’t sound very enjoyable to me.

Since DnT site is functional I don’t see any rush with this. I would say it takes me like two weekends to set this up. Improving current static site and setting up SVN/FTP for everyone (and teaching them to use) would probably take a weekend.

This weekend I will create the database, add some dummy data and create basic dynamic page (will only show current 5 man records). Next weekend I add some basic filters and create the database interface. Third weekend I will polish and fix bugs. I can probably do some stuff during the week too but not going to rely on it.

So current roles and responsibilities so far:

Head administrator
That’s me

  • site management (adds features, updates rules when they are decided)
  • staff management (appoints staff, manages permissions)
  • problem solving (drama, staff issues, site issues)
  • calls in rule meeting?
  • calls in votes when an record attempt gets contested?
  • resets records after balance changes?

Rule meetings
Debby [iV] and Menno [iV] (haven’t asked yet)

  • Hosts rule meetings when requested (by head administrator?)
  • Contacts people
  • Ensures that the meeting goes properly
  • Coordinates with the lawyer for updating the rules

Lawyer
Nike (I assume he is posting as hybrid, please correct if wrong)

  • Updates the rule text
  • Sues people

Approvers
Ravi [DnT], Spoj [rT], Iris [Noob], Rising Dusk [VZ], Snowball [KING], Mhenlo [SC] (amount seems fine for me at this point)

  • Tags a record attempt with a post to reserve it (so people see it is being worked on)
  • Approves or rejects the record attempt in a clear case
  • Requests help in unclear cases (asks other opinions to prevent any conflicts)
  • Votes when a case gets conflicted/contested (vote called by head administrator?)

Issues/unclear things:

  • Who decides when a record attempt gets contested? Could approvers somehow do it? Should a vote always be done (allows trolling to increase workload)?
  • When a rule meeting should be called? Every 4th month? Decided by someone?
  • When to reset records after a balance change? Could this be done by approvers if their decision can be contested? How severe nerfs should cause a reset?

Record attempt process

  • Make a post on official forums
  • Attempt gets tagged by an approver within 48 hours.
  • Record gets approved or rejected within a week.
  • Anyone can contest the decision with a reason causing approvers to vote.
  • Decision by a voting can’t be contested without a 100% proof.

Seems fair?

Defiance buff on Bosses

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Wethospu.6437

Wethospu.6437

A boss can easily have 1 million health while in PvP players have like 20k. Should damage skills also get additional effects (like control) because they are less efficient at killing the target?

(direct) damage skills still have the same effect, even if they do relatively less damage due to the high hp pools; Still, bosses usually just tank damage, since they don’t dodge at all (and neither properly use defensive or healing skills). That high hp is their only defense, since they lack a proper AI.
Damaging conditions may have some other issues.
Interrupts have their effect completely denied 5/6 of the time.
And they aren’t even in equal numbers, anyway – there are much more skills dealing damage than CC skills..

If my HB deals 20k damage I need one HB to kill a 20k target. If boss has 1m health I have to use it 50 times.

Compare that to interrupts. I need to use 6 interrupts for an interrupt. 50 >> 6

Yes, high health is their only defense against damage. But so is defiance against control.

If there are more underperforming damage skills, perhaps they should be fixed before fewer control skills?

A correct comparison should be about having bosses with a reduced health pool compared to now (let’s say, 100k hp) but they are damaged only by a single hit out of 10.
Sounds fun?
No, it would just be annoying. Extremely annoying

It wouldn’t really matter much because time to kill would stay same. But it would be pointless so of course current system is better. But your comparison doesn’t work for defiance. While damage can be split to smaller pieces, an interrupt can’t be.

What I’m trying to say is that they should fix what is broken. Bosses have bloated health bars because they are against 5 players so it’s completely fair that you need 5 interrupts to interrupt them (that’s why I’m suggesting reduction of one stack).

Additional effect for control skills won’t fix the control. It only reinforces dps meta because you get more damage while control is still pointless.

Simple fixes to make control meaningful:

1) Make interrupts cause full cooldowns for PvE enemies

2) Reduce one stack (5 players -> 4 stacks)

3) Encounter design
* Add special attacks to some bosses which temporarily remove defiance.
* Add devastating special attacks to bosses which are hard to deal with blocks and dodges.
* Add strong defensive skills to bosses which have to be interrupted if you want to kill the boss fast.
* No defiance but fight against 3 – 5 (weaker) bosses at the same time
* No defiance but use stability instead
* No defiance but give boss frequent stun breaks

Give us a prestigeous PVE armor too

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Wethospu.6437

Wethospu.6437

So we agree that it’s possible to have intended and designed content without dodging? Thus dodging is not that integral part of the combat.

Again you are focusing on the rewards. Rewards are not content. They are the prize for playing and completing the content. Adding reward doesn’t make things more difficult because the content already exists.

We already have challenging PvE content. We only lack proper rewards for doing it. That’s why I consider it absurd when some people say “PvE lacks hard content so it can’t have prestige rewards”.

I am not focusing on rewards. My only reference to rewards in our discussion, out of multiple paragraphs of commentary, was to point out that in the one instance where Anet intended dodge to not be used they made a point of telling us so by providing a reward.

One instance, an exception to the norm as represented by all but 100% of the game does not represent the design intent for the game as a whole.

A player handicapping himself is not making the content inherently more challenging, he is just choosing to lower his performance.

If your definition of “intended” and “design” is based on whether it gives any reward, then yes, you are focusing on rewards.

There are plenty of content which me and others can clear without dodging. I would say over 75% of PvE content is like that. If you use tanky gear it’s at least 90%. Anyways, not exactly sure what you are trying to prove here. My point was that it’s possible to have intended and designed content without dodging.

So in your opinion if I pick an option to lower my damage by 50% the content doesn’t get harder but if I pick an option to increase enemy health by 100% then the content gets harder?

If not, are you then saying that fractal scale 50 has equal challenge as scale 10 because only health and damage changes?

A player handicapping himself is not making the content inherently more challenging, he is just choosing to lower his performance.

Truth.

Any task, no matter how mundane, can be made difficult with arbitrary additional restrictions placed on it. I challenge people to perform their morning commute wearing a blindfold after downing 7 shots of tequila. That must mean their morning commute is inherently difficult, right?

That’s just naive. Please make a serious reply if you want to discuss something.

If it’s truly a learn to play issue then I wish all those guys I’ve seen die in 1 second would learn to play or swap to something more hardy.

There’s a reason why Guardians don’t drop like flies at the slightest mistake. And that has nothing to do with their armor/health.

And rebalance costs of newer skills / traits. They shouldn’t be based on people who have played for months and have dozens of gold and skill points. If people have too many skill points add more and easier ways to spend them. For example skill animation customization (can be disabled in PvP).

Enemies (particularly AI) need serious buffs (in no particular order):
1) Enemies dodge out of Hundred Blades, AoE’s and similar stuff.
2) Enemies can move while attacking (especially melees).
3) Ranged keeps distance even when players “disappear” behind corner.
4) Projectile-based enemies move if unable to hit because of anti-projectile.
5) Projectile-based enemies move closer if player zig-zags.
6) Enemies are aware of each other. They avoid stacking but still move as a group (when players attempt to pull, go behind corner, etc).
7) Melees leap, snare, etc.
8) . . .

@haviz
So basically, a player that uses what the game offers him to kill a boss faster is somehow, by your judgement, less skilled then some other player that runs around him for 10 times longer?

I bet you travel around the country with a horse, because using a car is so stupid and mainstream.

His point probably is (and if it isn’t then it’s my point) that you shouldn’t feel good/awesome because you can drive 40 kph. However, going by foot at that speed…

5 signet is worse than 4 signet + FGJ!, and that’s just start of that slippery slope.

In theory yes, in practice – no…
Not everyone is perfect in this game and not everyone has 24/7 spare time to “get better” in every dungeon there is + WvW +sPvP in this game. If one can not survive, zerker gear is worthless. I run a war with 3k armor and ~28-30k health and I’m often the last man standing and many times are left to solo the last dungeon boss, when all the “standard” zerker teammates go down.
I also like the basic idea of being able to sustain some punishment and being able to run through trash mobs like they’re nothing, I can not do that with zerker gear as every smallest mistake can get me downed.

If I can solo most of the dungeons with my Berserker Warrior that says something about being practical (with 5 guys it’s a lot more easier). You are feel free to try with your PVT-gear.
As you said, with Berserker-gear you have less room to make mistakes so people want to kill stuff as fast possible. Then if you have few guys rolling with low damage bunkers/tanks it gets much harder for glass-cannons because fight lasts longer. Also if you are supposed to be a tank and you aren’t protecting your teammates then what’s supposed to be your role?
Yes for skipping PVT-gear is obviously better because you aren’t dealing any damage, however all skips are quite easy.

For me it’s kinda the opposite, why do people buy berserker gear?
Being that squishy is not good in my opinion. But I prefer survivability over damage in almost every game.

In PvE, people just want to get it done fast.

Berserker gear pve is only strong if the person who wears it is skilled. Others who wear it just end up dying 2-3 seconds into a boss fight – constantly.

How much stronger do you think PVT-gear makes you? About 2 times stronger? So you last 4-6 seconds instead?

High end content definitely shouldn’t be soloable (unless it scales). But forcing it with stuff like pressure plates or something similar isn’t the solution.

Dungeon community ignored?

A way up to the boat in Arah path 2 was blocked off. This is great, again.

I wouldn’t be so sure about that At least they tried.

It’s the thought that counts, even if they didn’t block off all the points to the boat.

I was trying to be nice anyway, and then I got a post infracted because I wrote that ArenaNet can’t stand the idea of interacting with the dungeon community since that’s apparently a personal attack towards their staff despite the fact that they moved my thread to trashcan dungeon forum.

Actually you didn’t. Personal attacks instantly max out your infractions and give 2 weeks ban.

Reading through most of these threads, it’s not hard to figure out why the sub-forum is being ignored. A huge percentage of the posts are venomous and directly insulting. I feel sorry for any newer players who stop by this forum, simply because they may get the impression that the GW2 community is terrible, which is untrue as a whole. The moderators already have their hands full with cleaning up the nonstop offensive posts.

It’s great that at least you are so friendly and constructive instead of calling everyone terrible or venomous.

“We expect all community members to be respectful of one another and that includes our staff. Do not engage in personal attacks against ArenaNet staff. Please note that abuse of staff members or moderators in forum posts, private messages, or email appeals may result in forum account termination. You have been warned.”

Is the message I got.

Apparently you are more equal than me. Have you bought any gems lately?

As you said, PvE is about the damage. So of course people get “excited” of new damage traits.

10% isn’t a massive amount. Anything under a second is reduced by such a small amount that I can’t see the investment being worth it as a grandmaster trait. Generally speaking, when you are trying to approach damage increase through increased speed once you get to around 0.5s any additional improvements are so small that they are not worth doing.

1.0s -> 0.9s
0.75 -> 0.675s
0.5s -> 0.kitten
0.25s -> 0.225s

450ms is apparently a bad word when I state it as a fraction of seconds.

It’s actually X/(1 + 0.1), not (1 – 0.1) * X. So 1.0s -> 0.91s. While improvement for one attack is small, you have to keep in mind that you get lots of attacks during a fight so it adds up.

Something to keep in mind is rounding. If it works in our favor then we might see bigger improvements.

Another thing to consider is cooldowns. Issue with Axe is that the damage is backloaded. You should finish the chain before using any other skills to not lose damage. If higher attack speeds makes cooldowns match worse then this won’t be so good. However, it may also make them match better.

Also attack speed doesn’t mean more attacks but more autoattacks. But I guess it won’t make big different with Axe as all skills have pretty similar dps.

Also on top of the ~10% more damage, we get more hits so more adrenaline and more on-hit effects (for example Rending Strikes).

Makes me kind of wonder why can’t we have all these good things automatically. Anyways I won’t buy because there’s no guarantee it will be best-in-slot.

Cuz Anet wants money and if everyone had it it would be less cool

Yeah, was just dreaming about game where devs would be “hmm this seems bit inconvenient for users, let’s remove it”.

Generally speaking things should go fine as long as people aren’t approving their own records. But what is important how we avoid drama and bias calling when something gets rejected. I don’t think the individuals matter that much as long as the whole community is represented. Like one approver from rT, DnT, SC, etc.

So everyone could approve and reject non-related stuff on their own but if their decision gets contested then additional approvers would be used. This could be handled for example by a vote from all non-related approvers.

It would be helpful to know if majors guild have interest of having one approver because if all have one it should be more than enough for our needs.

After that we can see if we need extra persons to manage the record table.

Sure, we all appreciate their efforts but we don’t just want our efforts completely forgotten. Few tweaks and most of the complainers would fully support the change.

Greater penalties for Death

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Wethospu.6437

Wethospu.6437

So am I a really bad player when I died like 10 times when trying to solo Spider Queen without dodging and with melee skills only (and eventually got it done without taking ANY damage)?

Maybe my character should have been sent back to tutorial for some basic training?

it doesnt have to be a penalty like that anyhow. The Point is to negatively reinforce death, or postively reinforce living in certain circumstances.

lets say the dungeons, had challenge mode.
greater rewards, or special rewards.
conditions for success are;
cant die/limited deaths
reward scales based on time to complete
amount of unique enemies slain

Open world version might be like, a running buff to rare item drop rate, (that effects chests) that gets lower with each death, and gets worked off with experience gained. (like GW1 but with item rarity/gold bonus instead of hp/mana reduction.

the precise implementation is up for debate, but the idea is, make people want to live.

and lets be honest, you might be the man, but if you could solo the whole dungeon without dying, you would be more of the man.

Sorry for wasting your time but not actually interested of discussing this seriously.
