But yeah, I think it’s a bad decision to completely forget dungeons. I never really expected new paths/dungeons but improving and reworking current encounters wouldn’t take much work. Honestly I think it would take me max 1 month to improve/rework all dungeon encounters.

Hello, I recently started playing a necromancer. At level 32 I went to do AC story and wanted to kill the Cave Troll. My party told me he is impossible to kill with a pug (pick-up group) and “just oneshots everyone”. I thought that sounded like a good challenge for a fresh necromancer.

To make things bit more interesting I decided to add two simple rules:

  • no dodging
  • no damage taken

Here is the result.

If anyone wonders why I’m not using minions the reason is that he gets bugged. For some reason he doesn’t want to attack them and just stares at them adorably (ok, as much adorably as possible for an ugly troll).

Breakdown of the encounter

His base attack shoots a homing bouncing projectile which can’t be blocked. It also dazes and removes boons. Only way to deal with this is to evade or break line of sight. Since I’m not dodging I have to move around a corner, a lot. This may sound simple but if I move bit too early he will stop at the corner and then I have nowhere to hide. Similarly if I move too late his attack will just come through the corner. Additionally lots of my own attacks need a line of sight too. It’s really easy to get own attacks obstructed.

His the most dangerous attack is the leap. He jumps at someone and deals lots of area damage and launch. When he lands he shoots a projectile at each nearby targets which does also lots of damage and knocks down. Naturally, all unblockable. I could have simply broke line of sight so he would leap towards a wall but I wanted to handle this differently. I decided to immobilize him so he can’t jump to me. The shockwave he shoots can be easily jumped over.

Unfortunately necromancer doesn’t have that many immobilizes. If I get really lucky I can use the immobilize from Death Shroud but that’s not so cool. Instead I interrupt every other leap right before he hits so it goes on full cooldown. If I miss a single control skill I won’t have his defiance stripped on time.

His last move causes fear and weakness on nearby targets. This can’t be blocked or evaded. This is not very dangerous normally (except when he fears you down of a ledge). However the fear allows him to land one base attack so I need a way to deal with this. Luckily I have the whole Soul Reaping traitline unlocked so I can just make Death Shroud to give stability.

The real reason I participated and felt I could participate as a pug group was because of the wipe rule. It is an equalizer, because everyone makes mistakes, and part of the excitement was seeing if you could recover from it. The risk also makes it really edge-of-your-seat, which is one of the most important things about esports… Those moments of intensity.

Even mistakes including, I think the rule does something else to team compositions. Every single comp on every single team had a Guardian, and there was a lot more team bulk than is necessary for a lot of speed clears. I think it was a good balancer, and it made it really exciting to see people recover.

I’m not sure if I’d want to see it done the same way again, but I did really like this way. I think maybe a full restart would run into the same excitement problems. You wipe on the last boss and then what, you watch two teams desynced by ten-twenty minutes? That’s not very exciting either. I think that some matches ending in a clean sweep is just the way sports in general (#pvesports) work. Sometimes people mess up and that’s that. I’ll keep thinking of ways to improve it, though, but at a minimum I want a break before the next one. My nerves need a break. ;-;

Yes, it’s beneficial for weaker teams as it gives them a chance for auto-win (if opponent messes up too bad). But as I said before, I think winning should be based on skill, execution and tactics, not if you make a single slip at wrong moment.

Wiping already has a very big risk even without “no res” rule. If you wipe, you lose a lot of time and probably lose the match. But if you play really good you still have a chance to recover from it.

I didn’t watch every match but I personally didn’t see any of this “recovering”. Perhaps 1-2 guys went down but there was really no risk (easy to just pick them up). And when wipes happened, it took few seconds without any chance of recovering.

Honestly I have to say that Im quite a fan of the no death rule this time, it means teams need to think in more strategical terms and consider more defensive approaches. This allows for more innovativity and makes the tournament’s runs more varied.

At least for me team compositions seemed pretty same for everyone.

Anyways, things don’t have to extreme. If dying isn’t enough punishing alone we can allow only WPing (so dead people have to run back) or even force whole team back to WP.

I’m totally agree. In my opinion, wipe rule + fixed teams is what saved this competition from the 4 ele pure speedrunning teams so popular at gwscr.com

And yeah, i think that adapting and recovering when something goes off the rail requires much more skill than just running everything smooth. So there is no need to push the balance toward the last.

Still wondering what would happen if rTs mesmer noticed the blinking stealth icon on the warrior and supported him with veil / mass invi )

Expect no one can know whether pure speedrunning would have worked. A team with more safer approach might have still been better because they would get through without wiping.

Actually “no res” rule removed a lot of skill from certain matches. For example team afking at entrance would have beat rT. Would you call that team skillful?

Because if you can’t handle a story mode dungeon then you have no right to step into an explorable dungeon. Fact.

Except that in some cases story-mode is harder than explorable.

No matter what happens your “I play how I want” builds won’t probably be the new meta so people will still keep kicking you. And people using the meta builds will just adapt and use the new meta builds.

I agree that some changes would spicy up the game in a good way. But that’s not what lots of people are asking.

It’s not the main issue.

Main issue is that we don’t need to interrupt anything ever and that interrupts are very underpowered.

In other words, interrupts should put skills on full cooldown against monsters and monsters should have powerful offensive and defensive abilities.

Then Defiance can be made more beginner friendly, if even needed.

This is a brainstorm topic for a possible community rating system. Nothing has been done yet and not exactly sure when I have enough time.

The goal of this system is to reduce negative behavior in dungeons and fractals by adding a consequence. This negative behavior includes:

  • Kicking people randomly
  • Stealing instances
  • Not delivering what promised
  • Not reading LFG messages
  • Being nasty

The system would contain two components, viewer and rater.

The viewer would allow anyone search the database. The viewer would ask an account or a character name and return his/her rating. Additionally the viewer could show the best or the worst players.

The rater would allow people rate other people. This would require authentication with GW2 account by using the API. After login, the rater would ask for a character name and/or account name. Then it would ask is the person a party member, a buyer or a seller. Then it would ask for the rating.

Rating options for a party member:

  • Player was helpful.
  • Player was ok.
  • Player didn’t meet the LFG criteria.
  • Player was rude.
  • Player kicked me without a reason.
  • Player exploited.

Rating options for a buyer:

  • Buyer was good.
  • Buyer was ok.
  • Buyer didn’t send gold.
  • Buyer stole the instance.

Rating options for a seller:

  • Service was good.
  • Service was ok.
  • Seller kicked me after receiving the gold
  • Seller used exploits to complete the instance

Additionally the rater would have an option for a video link which can be used to prove negative behavior. Human admins would approve the evidence and give huge negative rating.


The biggest concern is people abusing the system. Bunch of people could easily ruin the whole thing by downvoting reputable people. Some kind of a system to flag suspicious behavior would be needed and real people to verify and ban the people.

All in all, not sure if the whole thing would be really worth of the initial and continuous effort. Feel free to leave your ideas or comments!

You could have asked for a reward long time if you cared about it. It’s not my duty to make it up for you. The content has been in the game for a year. It was your choice to not play it.

Again as I said 2 posts earlier, the biggest reward for getting to scale 80 was to have the scale 80 (access + status). We have grinded for hours and spent lots of effort only to lose our biggest reward. I’m quite sure most of are ok with losing the access but we would like to keep the achieved status.

Lots of people have exploited their Dungeon Master title. Where is the reset to that? Also I’m quite confident lots of people have gained gold from unintended sources (= something which has been nerfed). Perhaps remove their legendaries?

Except Dungeon Master can be done by playing normally. And so are legendaries.
Level 80 fractals required an exploit to get there – there was no other way.
Any people who got over level 50 done it either via exploiting, or with the help of someone who exploited or that got there due of someone else exploiting it.

So exploiting is fair game if you have the option to do it normally?


the reset isnt a punishment, its because the level 50+ content you beat doesnt exist and doesnt represent what 50+ will be in the future. you beat a bugged side game that will no longer exist

wouldnt make sense for you to get access to whatever is new in 50+ because you beat a different form of content they didnt want you to have access to

Those non-existing mobs hit surprisingly hard. So why can’t I get rewarded for beating a side game? Are you really that bitter for not being able to achieve same?

Again, if they didn’t want us to access 50+ they would have simply prevent entering (literally changing one value in their code).
Why wouldn’t it make sense that I get access to time-gated content by having spent time? Why do I have to grind the levels again?

Optional stuff is completely fine as it can always be skipped.

Sure, random stuff would be designed. But you really can’t expect them to have same quality as non-random stuff, especially if random stuff means extra content.

I think Bloomhunger/Mossman etc. are actually bad. For example Bloomhunger and turret part are much easier than Mossman and bomb part. With some really hard scale and instability some teams may constantly fail at Mossman while they would breeze through Bloomhunger.

Assuming we ever get infinite scaling that would eventually happen to every team in the game. At some point your progression relies entirely on luck…

Boss Stacking

ranged(sitting 900-1200 away) players don’t get aoe boons (most utilities and aoe combos have small effect radius), cannot effectively revive or be revived, does less damage in general (with few exceptions)

so why would one choose to play ranged in coordinated small group(dungeons)?

its hilarious when 4 players got banner buffs, fury, 25stacks of might, and there is that one ranger standing 1500 away w/o any buffs, and later complains why no one wants him

Honestly, all this proves is that distance-based damage mechanics are incredibly dumb, which we’ve (or at least I have) known from the beginning. While I typically don’t have a problem with stacking in most cases, it just seems so contradictory of Anet to rave about this risk/reward setup between melee and ranged only to ruin it with bosses like the spider queen and subject alpha.

Long story short: Just more proof that Anet needs to get their dungeon design kitten together.

Alpha is higher risk and higher reward at melee. You are guaranteed to be standing on the ice spike. At range spider does more damage, in melee you can’t run out of its range if you get too low.

Alpha is NOT higher risk when stacked on, because 2 of his 3 potential attacks cannot hit a target that is on top of him.

And if you range and side step at all times you also completely avoid 2 of his 3 potential attacks.

There was this one guy, haviz.1340 (long time ago).

Basically I needed Arah tokens really bad because I needed leggings to finish my mix&match-armorset. I joined one group (I think it was like “warr/guard only” or something) on my Warrior. I hadn’t done it before and looked up some guides before going in, I even told them I was new and it was ok.
Unfortunately I didn’t prepare enough (hadn’t done much dungeons back then) and did really bad (was also lagging a bit). I didn’t know what to look for and it was really hard when they all just suddenly started running through the enemies. That haviz guy was also on the team and he gave me helpful tips all the time. I did what I could to learn and we were able to proceed (Lupicus was a real pain).
Then after this Alphard dude two of them suddenly stopped and told me how I suck and how they just carried me through the dungeon (sure, they were right but why not bring this up earlier if it’s a problem?). They asked me to give them 2g each or they kick me (they said I get end reward anyway and it’s to cover their wasted time). I was genuinely shocked and had no idea what to do (didn’t really have money back then). I had done my best and tried and now I just get booted?
Suddenly haviz whispers me and tells me to kick one of them. I was really confused at that point and just did what he told. Few seconds later I see loading screen and I’m out of the dungeon. I asked haviz what happened and he said that we kicked the instance owner and everyone got booted. It was hard for me to understand what he had done. He could have just finished the dungeon but instead he also booted himself wasting his own time.
And even after that, he asked if I wanted to come with him for another run (just think about time/effort he had spent on me). He had some of his friends with him and it went really smooth and I got my leggings.

Ok, this actually wasn’t true but great story though!

If non-meta runners just accepted that they don’t care about efficiency then all would be fine.

But instead, we get people telling that we don’t know what we are talking about and their build is also efficient, just in a different way. Or how they carry everyone and res noob zerkers. Or how their build is really good.

Also if people respected party descriptions… But no, instead we get people telling how we are evil and toxic because we want to play our own way. Oh, and how evil we are when we try to force our way on everyone else. Yeah right…
