The List - problems + solutions

in PvP

I know there are lots of topics about the problems with season 2 PvP mostly to do with the MMR but that is not the only problem. This is a collection of problems I have noticed over season 2 so far. It seems Anet have a policy of not replying to PvP topics right now, but I hope they at least read them. Fixing these problems I hope will go a long way to making PvP better again. They are not in any order, and i have also added some ideas for fixing some.

Please note this is all from a Solo Queue perspective.

*Profession balance – This is the root of most of the problems. i know it can’t be an easy fix. But it is far from a paper, rock, scissors scenario, there are dynamites that just blow the rest away. This is its own problem and a big one that would need its own topic, no simple fix here.

*Bunker builds - there are a number of them. Ele, ranger, Engineer, even some necros you could put into this category right now. When 2 or sometimes even 3 people can’t kill another class, one has to ask why? Balance (see above), yes but also – because this style of play is rewarded. Control points don’t move so the longer you have one the better your chance of winning are. A solution to this would be to have different types of game maps. Where different types of play can be rewarded. not, who can hold one spot the longest. Here is one idea. have 3 control points, but every 20 seconds they randomly change location on the map. To three of 12 different places. This would add moveably in to the mix. Along with more lock down builds CC. Also giving teams that were not lucky enough to get 3 bunkers on their team, to stand a chance.

*Match making – a big one this season, I know they are trying something new, but it’s safe to say it didn’t really work. It seem to be very cloak and dagger system that no one really understands. I understand why, people would milk it if they knew every in and out. But I think a Solo only Queue would go a long way to making a lot of casual PvPers feel better. I’m not sure how this one is an easy fix. my MMR as I imagine lots of other peoples has be destroyed by this season 2 match making system. Even resetting MMR for everyone at this point would not fix it as we would just be starting all over again putting the good with the not so good. Only way I can think of is going back to season 1 match making but also reverting everyone’s MMR back to what it was at the end of season 1. I don’t know if that is possible or if they have backups like that, but… going forward with the statics quo is only going to push more people away from PvP.

*Team make up - I see 3 rangers 1 gardain 1 mes on 1 team. 3 necros, 2 eng on the other. they all Solo Q ( i see at the end of the match) why on earth are the necros and rangers not spread over both teams? If, as I have heard its because the 2 teams MMR is very different, then they should not be fighting each other anyway. I guess this goes back to Match making as the root of the problem.

*Pips - the +2 for braking a losing streak. though it’s a nice idea on paper. in practice there is a lot, i mean A LOT of collateral damage. People start AFKing or losing on purpose so they can lose 3 in the hope of getting a win on the 4th to get 2 pips back up again. this has compounding effect for other team members getting them stuck in a no win situation where they are stuck in the same tire for days if not weeks on end. In my mind, this should be removed. Give people an incentive to win, not to try and lose to win bigger later on.

Anyone else got more, and I’m sure there are please just add them.

S2 From a High-Level Player's View

Hi all. I’m Zuko. I play tempest for Best Team North Africa, which is currently invited to participate in the Challenger Cup to qualify for Pro-League.

So the goal of this new matchmaking is to make the league system more skill-based. So if you have high mmr (the game thinks ur good) you will progress faster and easier. If you have low mmr (game thinks ur bad) you might have incredible difficulty getting out of amber. How it works is you get matched with players on ur team of similar mmr. The opposing team has team mates of a similar mmr on it. However, your teams average mmr and the enemy teams mmr can be vastly different. If you are one of the players in the top 1% then you have a 99% chance to face an enemy team with lower skill than you. Likewise if you are in the bottom 50% you have a 50% chance to fight people much better than you.

The idea is that the good players will progress to higher divisions quicker and leave only the bad to average players in the lower divisions. Then the average players will advance leaving only the bad players. So as the season goes on your matches should start becoming more balanced, and divisions will actually represent skill instead of time spent playing like last season.

Here’s the issue with that. While I love the fact that I am progressing quickly as a reward for being one of the more highly skilled players, this type of matchmaking can be quite discouraging to a majority of the playerbase. If the game doesn’t already rate you as good, you will be more likely to lose and the game will think more and more that you suck. Anet’s answer to this is as time progresses matches will become better. I fear however that this new matchmaking will cause many of the new, average, and bad players to just give up before matchmaking becomes balance again. Call it quits and go home. And let’s face it, that’s bad for the game. I would ask anet if having the few really good players progress faster is worth angering and harming the gaming experience of the vast majority of the player population. Also for the unlucky people who actually are bad whether it be from being unable to commit enough time or just lacking skill, there matches will never get better as they are always going to be below average and so will always have more of a chance to face teams better than them, and will always be on a losing streak and thus quit the game.

Feel free to share your thoughts.

Very dissatisfied with PvP-S2, and why

Pure Heart.1456

Very dissatisfied with PvP, particularly this season 2.

Nobody likes to to lose, and it’s the way in which one loses that makes it most unpleasant;

1) Close games are almost non existent. It’s either 639 vs 25 loss, or vice versa.
2) Endless losing streaks obliterate any feeling of progression.
3) An uncanny (deliberate?) system of “win 1, lose 1, win 1, lose 1” (when not in a losing streak) This is even more frustrating than #2.
4) Balance issues; there are a few classes/builds with overpowered damage combos or invulnerabilities.

I’ll continue to play because I’m after the wings, but continuing on for fun, I am most certainly not.

TLDR; Season 2 is an incredibly kittening unpleasant experience.

The problem is apparent when your teammates are worse than the opposing team.

That is the real problem on ruby onwards, it’s not that the opposing team is good, its just that your teammates suck.

And..you have no idea how did they reach ruby/diamond being that bad.

Karka Queen - most frustrating boss ever

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Konig Des Todes.2086

Konig Des Todes.2086

I decided to get there ten minutes early today and, after waiting for 8 minutes or so, she spawned near the one waypoint I didn’t have on the character I was on. So I went to the closest one I did have, and by the time I got there (literally 30 seconds later), she was dead.

I’ve got to say this is your fault. Reason is that if you were waiting for 8 minutes, you could EASILY map complete Southsun, thus having all waypoints.

Secondly, Karka Queen has only four spawn points – one per outpost for the meta – and two of them are very close to each other. Most people wait at the outpost without a waypoint and use either Kiel’s Outpost Waypoint or Camp Karka Waypoint if she doesn’t spawn outside Steampipe Steading.

That said, I really, really want Anet to revamp Southsun.

More events, some vistas and hero challenges, and a better vendor system that borrows off of Dry Top with exchanging tiers for “camps controlled” with five vendor settings (no camps, 1 camp, 2 camps, 3 camps, and all camps under control).

And altering KQ’s mechanics a lot to put her on par to Tequatl – since she’s in the “hardcore world boss” category anyways.

Have each armor removing animation be its own health bar, and give each health bar different mechanics. Make use of the breakbar.

  • First health bar: She’s a tank, requiring eggs to be thrown at her to reduce her toughness (using the 50 buff), and the environemtnal weapon spread across the island (add more at boss spawn points) are only weapons that affect her.
  • Second health bar: Still high toughness, as only a little armor was removed, but now you can damage her. Her armor rating sets to a specific amount (at 25 stacks for the egg buff) with eggs to be tossed at her.
  • Third health bar: She becomes stationary but succeptible to all attacks regularly now. Her breakbar becomes active as she spews eggs that spawn both hatchlings and bring in young karka (attempting to zerg the players).
  • Fourth health bar: Switches between stationary and mobile modes, summoning elite adult karka to defend her (number of elites scaling with players).
  • Final health bar: She becomes a glass canon – high damage output but very low toughness and health. Easiest to beat but if not beaten quickly she can easily wipe out the zerg of players.

Each health bar goes to full, and during transitions she gains determined for 3 seconds (so that conditions do not continue damaging through the evade).

Dear ANet writers,
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.

This is an excellent video and get to the point of “Where does this begin and end ?”

As one of the people say in the video, “it is up to the individual to protect themselves, as there is no clear definition of what even begins to be a spoiler”

Let me also state here that i have ZERO sympathy for those individuals that intentionally and not in the context of a chat discussion just shoot out movie details.

I am sorry but i have a big issue with this “Reporting Policy”.

So we are now going to start reporting everyone for anything that “may” spoil someone else life ? Whats the next movie or event we will pick to do this on ? Are political and religious events included ? What about cultural issues ?

Where does this end ?

Yes. I agree that its not “morally” right to be doing this, but whats next ?

“ANET, please put a gag order on everything and anything on the game because it will spoil my life !”

The whole internet, radio and TV is full of spoilers for the new Star Wars movie.

My local TV here in CT was discussing certain major events in the movie 1 day after it showed !!! Talk about spoilers there on 6 pm news !

I say “live and live”.

Like someone else said, for those that do not want to be “spoiled” set your chat to your guild, assuming you have no idiots there and leave there until you see the movie.

This “eye for an eye” approach is getting ridiculous.

Some common sense would go a long way, and some “under-reaction” rather than “over-reaction” would also help.

My 10 cents…

Sooo where to start. About 75% of the time I try to enter this place, I get ported into a finished instance just to be shown the high score and kicked out again. Sometimes it doesn’t even do this, just shows double loading screen and kicks me out (pretty much like jump puzzle, as seen in the other thread nobody can enter that at the moment).

2nd point: the dialogues when talking to NPCs. If a new person attempts to talk, it kicks everyone else out of the conversation. Last year it was first come first serve, this year it doesn’t matter when you come, but how kittenty your luck is. I keep getting kicked out of the conversation on loop until the place is filled up and I have to get out and try find a new instance. This happens to the donating NPC as well.

How hard is it to recycle an event that worked so well last year? Pretty much everything is recycled anyway, but this year it is also broken as hell. The list of bugs since this patch is unbelievable, not to mention the forever resetting interfaces and lagg/ping spikes that never occurred before the HoT release.

Assuming each gift drops one drink (stats point to ~0.9 so this is likely an overestimate), you would have to get at least 1000 gifts.

The JP gives 10 per successful run.

Getting 1000 from the JP in two hours implies you found a way to cheat and finish it over eight times per minute, or 7.5 seconds per run.

You are a liar.

Hi guys.

Its very obvious that a lot of people are unhappy with the league system as currently implemented, but I would like to reiterate some of those points and also bring one last point to the table – as per title.

Fair warning, this may be a bit disjointed!

1. Some basic things that have already been discussed :

1.1. Promotion of skill(or lack thereof) :
This is an extremely important part of any PvP system but seeing someone having the tags next to their name denoting the different leagues means almost nothing.
I would even go so far as to call it a MUCH larger grind than the previous iteration of ranked leaderboard.

1.2. Abuse and manipulation :
This has been discussed to death but its obvious that the entire system is riddled with flaws and ways to gain pips and so called “prestige” in doing so.
The reasons this is possible is manifold, and I don’t want to go into all of them.
But the biggest problem is the fact that MMR and leagues are way too disconnected and almost contradict each other in so many cases.

And finally the reason for my post.

2. Punished for being a longtime PvPer :

We, the PvP population that are unwilling to abuse the system in any way and have played for a long time are being punished for it.

We have the most settled MMR, which means our winrates have settled on near 50% or as close as it can get. We are essentially relying on matchmaking to get lucky and match us in such a way as to gain a point even when the game was lost. My most pip gain is when we are facing a 5man premade and still lose the match, this is frustrating and unfun but I find myself HOPING for it just so that I can advance in leagues.

The other alternatives are dishonest and literally is something I (and im sure many others) are unwilling to do.

A simple but not perfect solution would have been to reset MMR completely for season 1, this would have alleviated a lot of issues and even created a lot more healthy PvP environment.
Why was this not done?

This would still leave a lot of holes for exploiting and manipulation, but at least the start of the season would have gone better.

Guess I am just upset that Season 1 is unplayable for me now.

Legendary Crafting, don't do it

I see a lot of posts complaining that the precursor crafting is too expensive and the collection should have been longer but no one ever says what anet could have done to make it longer.

Anet made it a very long inexpensive collection. It just happens that the components of the collection can be sold on the tp.

Would we all prefer a collection of account bound items from all over the world?

Actually, i have, in other posts. This isn’t the first nor will be the last thread about this issue, which just shows it IS an issue. But if you want i’ll do somethign i hate, repeat myself.

So step one, simply add more steps, there’s a lot of tyria to see, and the parts that are done right are done right too fast.
If you need time gates, do them like they did for the Xmas tree, have us get a different item every day to sate the hunger of an NPC.
Similarly, instead of asking for dozens of the same ascended material, why not gasp introduce a special, precursor-only material, specific to each precursor that you have to mine on special nodes.

I.E. To make Zap you require “Mithril sword requisition” which is pretty much harvesting a ton of mithril and crafting swords, so why not instead require the special metal “Fulguritium” sword requisition (well, they added fulgurite to the game, so yeah), the collection would hint its a metal that is formed when lightning strikes in a beach, and it requires a special spade to collect. The spade needs to be purchased once a day with karma from a wandering miner which would spawn in one of the mines/quarries in the game (there’s a few of those), so people would have to find where he is, buy the spade, then look for fulgurite on a beach. The shovel could also have actions, one working like the treasure map allowing us to find in which map the nodes are present, the second like the SW shovels would allow us to pinpoint where the node is when in the map, the third would allow us to harvest. After harvesting you’d exhaust the shovel, and would have to wait a day to get a new one. Each harvest would have enough materials to craft one sword. The recipe for the sword could be bought (with karma) from a master crafter.

Of course instead of 250, it would require 10, since its already time-gated, and involves a bit of running around. So 10 days later, you’d deliver the fulguritium swords to the NPC and get the basic fulgirite sword requisition.

Instead of having to hand over a ton of blades/hilts (including 5 ascended) for the “Art of forging” you could do chores for the NPC to get you the stuff, some of the chores could involve making a special recipe using more fulguritium, or crafting one or two items with 450 recipes, using special account bound materials, because the point is to prove you’re a good smith, not that you can buy sword hilts or blades from the TP (which, btw you can atm).

I could really go on and on, i mean they had MONTHS to create this, sure it takes a lot of time coding, but kitten , couldn’t they think of anything better than “Craft 10 of each sword hilt”, “fork over a metric ton of mithril for a item”.
The for example the actual crafting of zap experiment would require 10 more days of harvesting fulgurite.

Also you could have more interaction with other masteries, for example, having the pact commander supply line mastery, some of the npcs could sell the shovel, or even fulgurite outright, same for the Guild trader, etc. These things would entwine the legendary with other content more firmly, and make it faster.
Sure its a ton more work, but it would result in a better system, since the time gates would be a bit more understandable, unlike the current ones that are simply there because arena net decided some time ago that we shouldn’t craft too much ascended materials at once.

Its not actually that hard to

There is nothing wrong with an MMO having a thriving economy, and making the game less based on the economy would not be an improvement.

Thriving economy is one thing, building the entire game around it’s economic systems is an entirely different matter.

Pointless to discuss that any further though, this is one aspect of this game’s design that is certainly not going to change.

Why is everyone so mad about the precursor?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Aomine.5012

Aomine.5012

It comes down to time.

Think of it like this. You work to get paid right? What did you get paid for? Your time.

Money is time and time is money. Very simple.

When you put the time into making Ascended Armor or Precursors by gathering all of the gear you expect that at the end of that your time is equal to the outcome. That’s how real life works. If you are getting paid 8 quid an hour for your labor and then are expected to work that time again without pay you have the Ascended Armor and Precursor crafting system.

And when it comes to Precursor crafting, you not only have to spend time on collecting materials, you also have to do tons of extra work.

If you collect those materials yourself, and then SELL it on TP, you’d only need to collect 70% of the material and save the whole process of scavenger hunts to get the precursor.

In short, if you choose to craft precursor, you spend triple amount of the effort (MORE time and MORE gold) for the same product on TP. This is why people are mad.

It’s like the whole time-consuming processes has 0 value, and you still pay more for the material cost.

And before people bring out the price stabilizing theory bs, Anet would be releasing new legendaries every 3 months, which are only craftable, and also COMPETING the same materials as old precursors. It’d take at least 1~2 year before the price can come down because every few month there’d be a price spike in material once again.

If Anet doesn’t solve the root of problem, nothing will change.
