I WAS an avid WvW roamer. After having WvW ignored and pushed back again, and again, and again…I went to PvE and PvP. At least the content there felt worth doing.
Anet, you can’t really expect players to ‘scout and be map aware’ when there is no incentive. Commanders have to pay scouts out of their own pockets, to go out and roam. Roamers get nothing from roaming. They still get nothing. Why should the responsibility of WvW fall onto the shoulders of a small handful, instead of having everyone pitch in as a community effort? If anything, removing white swords just made it more tedious. This is just going to fall into another EOTM karma train.
Thieves aren’t really well known for ranged builds. P/P isn’t considered a viable set, and even if there is a strong SB build, it’s only useful within 1v1 duels.
However, full dire p/d is a very strong (and super cheesy) build. Traits are 20606. Despite it being ranged, there are times where you will want to draw in close to the enemy to increase dps, before shadowstepping away.

I had mixed results. I started out with really good matches today, close ties and great teammates. Then it all went downhill. I lost 4 matches in a row, mostly by just a simple lack of understanding pvp. When 4 of my teammates go home at the start of the match, try to take far alone with 2 defenders, then accuse the enemy of zerging when they’re just clearly defending their early two caps…I worry.
Seriously, how did I get matched up with these people?
In PvP, what would be the most viable build to run in Courtyard? Shatter is too glassy in condi-happy scenarios, and PU doesn’t seem to help my team anyway. I’m tempted to try a lockdown/interrupt/tankish hybrid build, or something out of the norm. Advice?

I think I used it a few times in duels, to copy 25 stacks of might from someone, and that was it. I thought it was great for boon copying when it first came out, but I…don’t recall ever using it since.
I miss the old mimic too…that was fun. Maybe the devs thought it was a little too OP…
I went for PvP the first time today since the patch hit. I wanted to avoid the bandwagon and any potential quirks that still need to be worked out the system. Guess I need to wait longer…
I am not a goddess of pvp, and I cannot carry these rookies. My win/loss was 50/50 – now it’s 1 win every 4-5 matches. This is hurting me. It’s nice to have games fill up in seconds, but I would rather wait 2-3 mins for a well balanced team, then get thrown in the mix with people who don’t know the basics of pvp teamwork.
We have a practice and unranked games, right? What if a ‘ladder’ was implemented, where you needed to win x amount of games in unranked before ascending to ranked? Lose too many in ranked, drop back down to unrank?
Being able to hotjoin into ranked matches make it seem pointless. There’s no goal to work toward – no needed effort to better yourself. IT feels like players just keep throwing themselves into matches for the pvp rewards, and when they start losing, they just give up and do as they please.
I don’t want to ‘get good’ by learning how to carry rookies. No, I wanna get good by watching other good players. I don’t want to facepalm when someone asks, “where’s the treb?” I want to pick up useful know-hows on other’s gameplay, learn clever tricks from allies and the enemy, and figure out how to adapt to builds that counter mine.

It also happens when swapping to a musical instrument. I can’t play my flute or harp anymore without my mantras resetting..
How does one counter conditions in PvP, as a shatter mesmer? Condition necros are pretty much the only class I struggle against.

umm have no idea what the chest piece is and the colours, i want to match this identically as it looks insanely cool. Any help would be appreciated. I have all other pieces of the armour just not the chest with the feathery strap.
I don’t think that’s the chestpiece. It looks like the sneakthief set, but the ‘feathery strap’ is probably part of a cultural piece shoulderpads.
Why can’t you two races just get along? Why not co-exist peacefully? As a Sylvari, I really don’t understand. All this anger and hate – it’s just silly, and not even healthy. Can’t we all live in harmony?

Another thing I hate about the NPE, is what they did to the personal story. Doing the personal story actually gave me incentive to level my alts, so I could see what happened next. And it gave decent EXP reward to boot.
Now the story is missing ugly chunks, and is all over the place. Come on Anet, we know you can do better than that.
Let’s put it this way: if it’s bad enough I’m sitting my lvl 5x warrior by a bank, feeding her a leveling tome every now and again from pvp rewards, instead of taking her out into legit leveling and learning the class, then the NPE must be annoying enough I wanna skip over all of it.
I am quite happy that I got most of my alts to 80 before NPE/trait change patches. The trait system doesn’t encourage about learning the class or exploring the open world – it encourages grinding. Either grind for gold, or never appreciate the class to its fullest potential.
The system is great for players who are brand new and still have all of tyria to explore. Not for a vet of ~2 years who’s seen everything at least 3-4 times through.

As much as we vets will hate the NPE, it’s targeted for new players – people who never played an MMO before in their life.
It could definitely use improvements. Instead of expressing our hate with biased posts and exaggerated accusations, how about something more constructive?
1. Toggle on/off the NPE tooltips (heal reminder, gameplay notes, explore this area here, etc)
2. Revise the entire trait system
3. Remove silly things, like dancing in front of a cow.
4. Teach necessary game concepts – explain bundles, what is crafting, what are fields/finishers, etc. – the same way they did with dodging.
5. Return golem chess / Edna’s pie

I recently returned to pvp, and was practicing a few shatter combos on the golems earlier. At the end of one string, I somehow generated 15 stacks of might all by myself.
How did I do this? I wanna know so I can do it again.

I don´t have much trouble with p/d thiefs when running hybrid lockdown with iDisenchanter. They won´t kill you anytime soon plus you´re able to interrupt CnD and their heal. Add guard stacks, bloodlust and 10 might, and you should be able to kill them if they don´t run.
Ooh, that’s interesting – I didn’t consider that. But is there a second option aside from mantras? I know they make very strong builds, but I feel they are too easy to interrupt on casts, and too risky to use out in WvW solo.

Depends what you mostly play with, and what your weapon swap is. Bloodlust and fire is great. I personally see the sb more of a defensive weapon, and one for solo WvW roaming. I would slot in purity and blood/energy – or if you got the money, purity and generosity.
One of the biggest problem with the mesmer is it’s slow & clunky from skills casting time. Unless the timing is right, you will never out skill, or out class other classes due to there quick speed on there skills vs the mesmers. It makes all the difference in the world.

To be fair, if you manage to survive the 2-2-2 spam, that thief is in trouble. A thief is speedy, but if you don’t control the speed, the thief will flop.
If anything, I think thief is more difficult to master than mesmer in a lot of instances.
Honestly, I would prefer the option to trade in 5-10 ascended rings to pick a ring you want.
Hm, let me think. Thief p/d is a 100% dire build, and any melee attack is easily negated by a backward shadowstep. Getting in close only means standing in their caltrops, and their steal is traited to daze. You can outrange the thief, but I don’t think you could focus enough damage. Clone death traits could work, but you can’t always respec for fights in WvW. Short of asking a friend to gank the thief with you, I can’t think of any tactics right now.

On the other hand, this is a build designed to wittle away health. Even if it can be bursty, it’s slower compared to other thief builds. You do have that to your advantage. You could go yolo and try to burst them down, while timing a daze on their heals or CnD, although that would be quite difficult to accomplish.

Mystic, mesmers can be deadly in pvp. They’re not an easy class to master, so yes. It takes time and patience.

Someone help me: What’s the point of this thread? That the OP hates thief if s/he’s not a thief him/herself?
The point of the thread is to recognize the source of ‘thief hate’ and educate people (both thieves and non-thieves alike) that nerfs on stealth is not the answer. All the hate and cries for nerf, are completely understandable. But frustration doesn’t justify nerfing a glassy class.
A thief needs stealth in WvW. (That’s not the same as saying they need SA, although it’s probably the smarter choice.) I’m likely singing to the choir, but hey, I wanted to share my two cents.
So next time there are pitchforks and a cry for “Nerf thieves and their kitten stealth!” we shouldn’t feed their anger and frustration with l2p, no matter how sincere it may be. Instead, we should sit down, nod quietly, allow them to vent, and politely reply. “Now see here, we’re not the culprit, we’re the victim. You, fine sir/madam do too much damage and force us into stealth. We don’t need to nerf stealth, we need to nerf your damage.”
This is totally not a veiled post in hopes of nerfing the dire condition meta. No pun intended.
I don’t think it’s just shadowstep. It actually happened to me earlier with my mesmer. I blinked to a spot, then teleported back to where I was standing.
Maybe not a first player story. You would have to be the coder, the writer, the graphic designer, etc etc. Something simpler, more closely related to facebook games, would be a decent start.
I would suggest a combat game. Maybe design it so you have male and female of each race and class, with only 2 skills and a 3rd elite. Then have them duke it out until one goes down.

For the first time in a long time, I took my mesmer for some WvW roaming. And my goodness, now that I wasn’t a thief, kitten thieves!
CnDing off my clones for stealth uptime, and SR before death to run and flee. I’ve done it so many times myself before, but now I can see it through my opponent’s eyes. I knew that if I could just get that sucker out in the open long enough, I could wreck them to the waypoint and back. And…sweet mercy, what hit me!? I was focusing on this ranger!
So. You know how every hater is like, “we hate stealth, thieves OP, thieves abuse stealth, no skillz, spam 2 all day, blah blah blah,” Well, it’s not the thieves’ fault. And I have two suggestions:
Option 1:
Give other classes a method to lose the targeting from their enemy. Even though I wasn’t playing PU mesmer, I was still semi-stealthy. Certainly not as much as a thief, but enough that I can be lost among my clones. But not every other class has a method to lose targeting.
Option 2:
Nerf everyone else’s damage!!

This way, a thief can stay out of stealth at longer intervals and fight back. Besides, thieves can’t do much while in stealth. Especially condi damage, ya know? Condi is just OPness overload.
Personally, I support idea numero two.

Why/How: Thieves dont deserve to get all boons from my mes they already hard counter him. Mesmers are masters of deception give us what the thief tries to steal instead because we tricked them. Or better Reverse the entire effect of steal onto the thief because we manipulated their mind. It makes perfect sense right?
Yep…10 seconds of EVERY BOON IN THE GAME is too OP. It should be nerfed to inflict confusion and torment on the thief when they steal off a mesmer.

Don’t get me wrong; I know they’re a company and they gotta make money. But if this game ever starts slipping into a “buy to play, pay to win” strategy, I’m hopping off before I get too attached. I already got too much heartache from my last game that was pay-to-win. I’m not falling into the same trap twice. I’d rather go find a reliable subscription game.
I went in solo completely unprepared and struggled a bit, but it was a decent fight overall. I got it on my first try so not bad.
I would prefer the pistol over the focus for lockdown, because enemies will be forewarned to ready a stunbreak/dodge the pull on the focus. It’s also easier to focus one target with the pistol than focus with the, er, focus.

I didn’t say it’s not strong; I said it’s not OP. Every class has some form of OP utility that will effectively counter another. If anything, I wish thieves could be played with as much diversity as mesmers. I wish I could safely PvP as aggressively with my thief, as I do with my mesmer. But that’s not how it’s designed.
Too many people will attack and hate on thieves (mostly because of stealth) without ever learning or understanding the class. Thieves have been nerfed so heavily – Some were needed, others not – and people still ask for nerfs.
There’s actually a thread on the thief forum that compiles a list of requested nerfs, and a lot of them are pretty ridiculous from a thief’s perspective.
Lastly, I would prefer it if consume plasma was changed. Maybe if consumed it grants a 1 second distort. Eh, I can dream.
