Help on my play style (New to GW2)

OP, you might be more interested in ‘support’ instead of just healer – it’s the closest I can think of comparison to a trinity healer. What’s unique about GW2 is every class can support in their own way. Crowd Control, boons (aka buffs), aoe heals, damage support, mitigating damage support, etc. It depends how they’re traited, what gear they wear, and what skills/utilities they bring in a fight.

Guardian and elementalist are likely the top choice for “healer” roles, but any class can support. Guardians are a heavy armor/tanky sense of support (think paladin), and elementalists are a light armor/versatile support (think cleric). Although elementalists are more of mage+cleric = jack of all trade.

Confused about how Guilds work in GW2

Server separation only applies to WvW – if you’re interested in that in the future, look for a guild associated with Ehmry Bay. But if you’re not, it doesn’t really matter which server you’re from.

Best Class and Why?

Arikyali.5804

There’s no straightforward answer here. Best advice anyone can give you is make one of each class, and test them out to see which one you like the best.

If you go into PvP, you’ll be able to unlock all the skills for the class and get a feel of which you like best.

Honestly, asking for all these changes is WAY overboard. Last year is no different from this year, and last year I’ve managed to survive very long as a villager, usually with 1-2 minutes left on the clock. This year is different: people give up and the game ends with 6 minutes left.

Part of the issue is villagers don’t believe they can win, so they just flat-out give up. Maybe if we nerf the emotes so they don’t get spammed constantly, it’ll give villagers some kind of hope that they can win.

I wish Halloween was more like Guild Wars Halloweens. An exclusive hat/backpiece/something each year.

Same for Wintersday. I wonder why they went a different route. Oh, well.

Because people have real life. Players will miss events when real life takes over. I am very happy they bring stuff back, because I sometimes didn’t get the chance to enjoy it the first time around.

I’m not compelled to grind for “exclusive” pixels that are one-shot-only if you logged in on x amount of days. It’s one of the reasons I bought this game in the first place – I know it can fit in my busy life.

I finally got to the top after not being able to do it at all last year, or several hours this year, but now that I did it, I can do it rather easily now.

Question though, why can you only pick the gloves or recipes once? I thought you could get all 3 from multiple runs, or one daily or something, so I picked the light ones (for the skins not the stats) and they just look like normal gloves, and its been a couple days and I can’t get the other ones. The heavy ones actually looked decent, but I thought I could get all 3. am I out of luck?

I thought the gloves were the same skins as karma armor?

I love this mini game! Clock tower and labyrinth are fun and all, but nothing beats a good vicious round of courtiers and villagers.

I won as the last villager again this year, although more on a lucky fluke than Mad skills (see what I did there…) For everyone saying that this game is boring, unfair, or lame, give it a chance!

I love being a villager, scouring for resources to survive the night, saving a fellow villager from a power hungry courtier, and the heart-pounding wait as you hide in terror, scanning every direction for ghosts. And I love being the courtier too, getting the thrill of the kill, the madness, the bloodlust, and the opportunity to terrify the poor villagers.

I managed to land into a good map, where people were duking it out and having a load of good time. A few rounds went so splendidly, with everyone just knowing what to expect from everyone else, we all ended up being courtiers with six minutes left on the clock. It was actually quite fun. Quite a few times I’ve ended up in some not-so-great maps…

Just some things for everyone to remember:

You are not supposed to have your weapons equipped in this game. If you do, this means you are glitched, and can kill everyone in sight. Please don’t – it ruins the game. Everyone will hate you for it. And doing it anyway, justifying it with “it happened to me, only fair I make others suffer” is not cool. Please, it’ll only make the game worse, for you and everyone else. It’s understandable if you had no idea it wasn’t supposed to happen – just understand that people have had one too many trigger happy jerks and your accidental attack may have blown the final fuse. And Anet, please fix this bug. It’s happened way too many times.

Now, some tips to get a good round moving:

=For Villagers=

1. Talk with your team. Use teamchat ( /t ) to strategize defenses or attacks. Villagers can go very far if they work together. This is what makes the game more fun, and a ton more challenging for courtiers.

2. As a villager, know when to hide, run, or fight. Don’t only do one – you will lose to the courtiers. And save your fellow villager! Most are more than willing to return the favor.

3. The best weapon to pick up, is the torch. It has a long duration on courtiers, and does not put you in combat. This means you will not get a speed reduction when you flee. Of course, every other item is a great tool to grab while on the fly, and you can’t always be picky.

4. Know your hiding spots. There are tons if you know what to look for. Just bear in mind that courtiers would know too…my personal favorites are behind houses…especially the one at the top NE corner of the map.

5. Doing the mini events aren’t a waste of time or weapons, and if everyone pitches in, can be accomplished very fast. I was in a great map earlier, and the villagers actually summoned fire imps. Needless to say, courtiers were kitten terrified.

6. There is a mini hidden quest which will give you a shotgun. Although it’s pretty risky to get if you’re a rookie. You’ll have to figure out yourself how to obtain it. (Hint: you need the hammer)

7. Falling off the edge of the map won’t kill you – in fact, it may save your life. I’ve used it several times myself for narrow escapes against courtiers.

8. Use your stealth carefully. It has a cooldown and you cannot move from your location once stealthed. I know a favorite tactic is to turn a corner, then stealth. There is also a way to do Mad King emotes and be stealthed…

=For Courtiers=

1. Standing on the stone portals will show you the location of villagers…dun dun dun.

2. Try not to spam the emotes, no matter how tempting it is. You’re a terrifying courtier, do you really need to beseech the Mad King for everything? It’s a lot more fun to fear your prey, toy with em, lead em into traps…then EVISCERATE THE BLOODY HELL OUT OF EM!!!! koff I like to play with my prey before converting em. Mwahahahahaha

3. Check hiding spots. Really. Check em.

4. You can shadowstep across the map with your scarecrow. Plop down your scarecrow, hit 4 again and you’ll shadowstep to it. This however, will double the cooldown.

5. Talk in map chat! This really gets everyone motivated for some odd reason.

6. Use the traps. It surprises me how many courtiers will run past stuff and not pick it up. You know what villagers need to survive? Tools. You know how you can remove that chance? Pick up those tools and turn them into traps.

7. Falling off the map will teleport you back to the center of the map. It’s a really nifty shortcut.

Enjoy the tips, and good luck out there!

Villagers can actually get very powerful, if they banded together and got tools. I won last year as a sole villager, and I want to do that again this year. Game mechanics, I think it’s fine…but the bugs break it.

Anet does listen, but they take quite a long time to implement the changes we ask for. We want everything instant and now, but Anet probably can’t come through with that demand. In that short of a time.

I don’t know how you can claim ANet listens but that it takes them a long time to implement the changes we ask. The only 3 things that I can think of that a larger player base asked for was account unlock dyes, the skin wardrobe, and mini slot. These are only QoL changes. Where is the content that keeps coming up day after day. There are numerous threads created about the same things at least once a week. I don’t know how many time I see new threads created about new races, new classes, new weapons, new skills, new dungeons/fractals, new guild missions, new areas, Cantha (apparently we won’t get because NCSoft doesn’t want to offend the Chinese by incorporating other Asian cultures or blending them), new PvP game modes, WvW balancing. Yet we hear nothing from ANet about any of it. We finally got a CDI on Guild Halls and will be getting one on Raids one the Guild Hall one finishes. It would be nice if someone from ANet would make a statement that says something like, “Yes, we are working on/developing/brainstorming about this and that.” No expected release dates are needed. Just give us hope that our wants and desires are being heard. All we have seen are changes for new players (because they think the new players don’t understand how to play the game) and gem store skins and items galore.

Did…you ever read past the first sentence of my post, before putting that wall of text? ._.

Anet does listen, but they take quite a long time to implement the changes we ask for. We want everything instant and now, but Anet probably can’t come through with that demand. In that short of a time.

They’re not going to listen to posts with baseless facts. Saying “a lot of people” or “not everyone” aren’t viable numbers. That’s not how a business runs.

It’s even harder to sort out pure, undirected rage with constructive criticism.

1. Yes, enough people were upset with the changes that several angry posts were put up on the forums. But Anet needs feedback, not rage. Rage =/= feedback.

2. They do listen. When they first flashed an ingame advertisement for the gemstore ingame, there was a lot of unpleasant feedback. And, we never saw ingame advertisements ever again.

3. The recent changes (NPE) are lacking, need polishing, but are necessary. Remember the very first time you played an MMO. It was probably very confusing.

4. I am FINE with repeated content. Why? I miss events sometimes. I missed the first Halloween, I didn’t really enjoy much of the 1st Christmas, I missed Flames and Frost, I missed the first Jubilee festivities, I missed spring 2014 WvW – real life took over. If content repeats the same way it did last year, that’s great! That means I can enjoy whatever I didn’t get the chance to enjoy last time.

To Anet: Most people (see, even I’m doing it) are probably upset because they love this game. You guys are doing everything right in a business sense, but a lot of implementations need polishing.

1. Gemstore conversion needs to account for less than 400 gems, AND odd values.

2. NPE would be easier to digest for veteran players if they didn’t have annoying pop-ups. And the NPE lacks a crucial system to teach fields and finishers.

3. WvW balancing could use some love, and I’m glad you’re looking into that.

4. Players want new content, and I’m guessing you can’t afford the manpower to do both new content, and polishing. I would prefer polishing over new content, but that’s me.

5. Skill point implementation. At least make it cost cheaper? I get the idea you want people to put map exploring with trait acquisition, and that’s fine. And you have the idea that vets should be more than able to pay the resources to bypass the traits. That’s fine too. Buuuut they are costly. If I were to count in the hours of farming loss to buy traits or do events to get them for free, I would only get the bare necessities. Not really worth getting them all.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Arikyali.5804

Arikyali.5804

I don’t mind items being re-introduced, as long as it’s 1. same effort put in to obtain the first time around, and 2. within the season. The Zephyrite merchant looked out of place to me…but it’s acceptable since people were unhappy about not spending their tokens before the merchants vanished without warning.

Exclusivity imo comes from the first Halloween, like the skins. Now they are back, but much more difficult to obtain – and still cashshop free. (Nay sayers, I got 12 of those shiny candy wrappers without trying.)

This is meant to be a laid-back game. Not everyone can afford to play every event. I’m personally quite happy of things being reintroduced, so I can enjoy them if I miss them.

Scarlet was not a Soundless

in Lore

Posted by: Arikyali.5804

Arikyali.5804

I don’t know how this was started, but there’s no mention of her that I can find, that categorizes her as a Soundless.

The wiki stated: “She was similar to the Soundless in that she was capable of keeping her thoughts and memories separate from the Dream of Dreams.” – Similar, not is.

Also: “During the course of the Living Story it is stated by the Avatar of the Tree that by separating themselves from her and the Dream the Soundless in turn reject her protection, which leaves them vulnerable to the corruption of the elder dragons. Most clearly this has been seen with the rise of Mordremoth, who had corrupted soundless sylvari such as Aerin and Scarlet Briar (whom whilst not officially stated to be Soundless was similar to the Soundless in how she separated herself from the Dream and rejected the protection of the Pale Tree).” – Similar.

Scarlet is like the soundless, but she is not a soundless. The soundless are a group of very peaceful villagers, who rejected the dream because they found its burden too much to bear, and/or wanted a stronger sense of independence. They were suffocated by its nature. Scarlet wasn’t exactly suffocated, but stubborn to accept it. It’s unstated if she ever meditated like the soundless to separate her mind, as it seems Mordremorth’s hold got onto her early.

Scarlet and the Soundless share the similarity of searching for independence, both striving for it in their own unique way. They don’t share ideas, philosophy, ethics, or desires. Apples and pears both come from the same family, but are not the same fruit.

Pirate Sylvari may have a different interpretation of the dream. Soundless work together in soul-searching. Dreamers embrace the Dream, Nightmare Court embrace the nightmare of the Dream. Scarlet was in a group of her own.

The only requirement so far for a Sylvari to be corrupted, is to reject the protection of the Pale Tree, the Dream, and other Sylvari. By rejecting this, they become separated, vulnerable to the corruption. The Soundless at least have each other to look after. Scarlet had no one.

Precursors Drop Rate

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Arikyali.5804

Arikyali.5804

There IS a way to get precursors/legendary the easy way – go get your credit card, convert gold to gems, and buy it.

I respect someone who put work irl and can afford the hundred of dollars necessary. It would be the same (and probably intelligently less time consuming) to do so.

I also want to see legendary feats > legendary RNG. But in my opinion, it’s equally a legendary feat to have the tenacity and patience to farm the money to buy it.

IT has to be something ridiculously difficult. Maybe 15,000+ AP, a couple hundred laurels, and steady long-term investment. Requires achievements from PvP, WvW, and PvE. Something that equals the effort and time investment of farming dungeons to make the gold to buy a precursor.

No, don’t worry about it. Your thread was likely misinterpreted as wanting a refund for your SAB purchases. Others have asked for the same thing. And others have asked to be compensated for the delay.

Most people here just skim posts and smack together the fastest reply, sometimes stretching the original meaning as far as possible, without pointing it toward any meaningful direction. It’s…really bad habit of human nature.

But I’d be willing to give up the exclusivity of what I got left, if it meant bettering the experience of PvP in general.

Party Leader Authority

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Arikyali.5804

Arikyali.5804

Yup, I can understand OP. Happened to me before after helping bunch of noobs in CoE. Well that is nothing if were to compare to fractal. Its infuriating when you got kicked on the last fractal stage, isnt it?

Well here’s what I’m proposing, what if Arena set a rule whereby at the end of a dungeon/fractal, the kick player function will not be available ?

Then you’ll get the trolls who do decent throughout the dungeon, but purposely fail the last one just to spite people. And can’t be kicked.

If someone gets kicked, what happens? Kickers find a member more in their play style, kickee finds a party more in their play style. Anger/annoyance for a few minutes and people get over it. What if you can’t kick? You’re forced to stick with people you don’t want to be with and endure hours of frustration and boredom.

Well, clearly you do not read properly of what i wrote, i said NEAR ending a dungeon. Let me clarify abit here, near ending a dungeon could be at the final boss perhaps? Or are you too thick i need to further elaborate?
If someone do not suit your playstyle, i bet you are smart enough to notice that in the starting of dungeon.

Hence “endure hours of frustration and boredom”<——this comments of yours is not valid.

Wow, no need to get so heated, simmer down.

And yes, it’s still valid, because the human mind work in funny ways. We like rewards. Would you yourself stay with a terrible party leader, if you think it’s almost over? You already invested so much time you might as well stay for a bit longer anyway. You wouldn’t want all your hard work to come up for naught, by just leaving the party.

Is it equally fair to the party members to put up with a bad party leader, on a dungeon they worked kitten together when the leader could have been all willy-nilly? No, I don’t think that’s fair at all.

If you want a laid-back party, put that in the description. You’ll get a fun party. Everyone’s happy.

Sure, its valid if you need more than hours to finish off a final boss. lol

You know, now I think you’re just trolling. I was about to give a decent reply, but stopped, realized how pointless this argument was delving to, and can sum up a really good example of a really bad party:

Mai Trin. Yeah. That’ll work out well.

NPE missed something important

Arikyali.5804

With all the changes made with the NPE, how could one of the most essential game mechanics be overlooked? There’s no tutorial for one of the most unique aspects of combat in this game?

I’m talking about fields and finishers.

We veteran players know what those are (sure hope we do) but newbies don’t. I took the time to teach a new player, (level 50, first character, about 1,000 AP) how to use combos for his class. He never saw them before, and loved the concept.

Everyone uses combos just like everyone learns how to dodge. Why aren’t new players taught this? This would SURELY be ten times more confusing than diving goggles.

PvP – I don’t see why anyone would run PU there, it’s a very selfish build, no?

WvW – Eeh, it’s not as bad as condition P/D on thief. That’s worse.

PvE – why?

As far as the mechanics of both the Terrace AND the Airship, my best guess is that someone at ANet decided (for whatever reason) they just didn’t want people logging in and out from those places (even though they aren’t instanced). Maybe they figured that these are small areas and they would get too crowded or something, I dunno.

But although the Airship has an Activity NPC and the Terrace does not, I never use her because of the added pain of a double loading screen when I exit the Activity. (One loading screen to bring me to the Airship from the Activity, then it immediately goes into a second loading screen to send me back down to the ground in Gendarran Fields. And if I earned rewards in the Activity that I want to deposit in my Bank, I must endure a third loading screen to get back to the Airship where I just was!)

It’d be great if you asked around about this when you get back to work on Monday, Gaile! They are right – having a pass on my person should allow me to keep from getting booted out. And nobody would have to come to harm from Quaggans falling out of the sky onto their heads.

Now, shoo! Get back to enjoying your weekend!

It might be because you can actually sneak into the terrace without a pass (Not by going through the checkpoint). I’ve done it a couple of times, before the terrace guard catches me and kicks me out. Kinda funny.

If you play WvW to duel

I don’t mind duelists in WvW, but I WISH the would move off to some secluded place, or go to obsidian sanctum. There’s actually a large arena there. Not duke it out in the middle of the road, and get mad when they’re interrupted.

Too many times I jumped into a duel to save someone that didn’t need saving. WvW is supposed to be all about dirty fighting, and duels aren’t dirty fights.

A few more, most just basics every thief should already know:

Putting your refuge against a wall so you can’t be pushed out of it.

Triple shadowstep- shadowstep, sword 2, and steal/infitrator’s strike. Closes gaps from fleeing opponents.

gunk steal: stack confusion with projectile finishers, or get chaos armor with blast finisher.

load basilisk venom on dancing dagger for ranged stun

turn your camera/about face and withdraw forward

Dodge inside your refuge – start at one side and dodge straight across the diameter – you won’t leave your refuge. Takes a lot of practice though.

GW2 is two parts: getting to 80, and all the stuff you can do at 80. It’s like a fancy dinner: eat it too fast and in big bites will make you sick. You gotta savor each delicate bite.
