Just to clarify, steal is 21 seconds cooldown. Not consume plasma. Mimic is 30 seconds (24 traited). It’s not consume plasma that has a short cooldown, it’s steal.
Thief pvp, the stolen skill isn’t used right away. Steal is valued for more than just gaining boons off a mesmer – It’s an important gap closer, and utilizes whatever it is traited for. (daze, inflict poison, stealth, recharge utilities, rips boons, etc.)
Using consume plasma (and all other steal skills) are extremely situational. Do I want to free up my steal skill for a gap closer? Do I want to save it later for an efficient burst? Or do I just want to get rid of it and steal off this other class for a more preferable item?
Mimic isn’t a must-have while fighting against a thief. And if you do carry it, I’m fairly sure you can safely copy off the boons each time from the thief. I may hold Consume Plasma for longer than the 21 seconds.
Imho, I don’t think consume plasma is OP. I get a bit defensive when I hear any consideration of a nerf on the thief.
and Lyssa runes? Those were nerfed because it was discovered how useful they were on short cooldown skills. Basilisk venom is on a 40 second cooldown, and procs when applying the venom to the weapon. A thief can dish out a generous burst while the enemy is stunned. Consume plasma can still be countered/avoided.
That map has a lot of very useful ‘secret’ teleport spots. Maybe they’re not cheating. It’s not against the rules as far as I know, to use teleports to provide an advantage in positioning.
Problem is: Not everyone enjoys the same kind of content. Is it really worth the time and effort to gauge the play difference of a) precursor drop on in some forsaken and forgotten corner of Tyria that no one goes to but a soloing explorer who went there just for the experience, and b) precursor drop during a farm-happy event?
The issue on prestige recognition of precursors isn’t that they can drop anywhere – it’s that they are solely RNG. Luck is the only way to get a precursor. I’d support an extremely difficult precursor scavanger hunt before any changes to a precursor drop table.
The distance advantage of double shatter, is negated by the thief’s mobility. Maintaining constant pressure, and never letting up, might be the best option. Daze them before they can CnD. A thief can easily disengage to recover before leaping back in the fight, and it doesn’t take long to recover.
If you yourself maintain a good distance away from the thief, a thief can double the distance away from you when they choose to disengage. Fighting in a small area will reduce the thief’s mobility, while you can still pile shatters on them.
When you wish you could blink/shadowstep across the street instead of waiting for a pedestrian crosswalk.
…Or is that just everyone regardless?
I get that some classes don’t have good boon stripping, but there’s no more “Oh sweet mercy! I’m surrounded by a merciless-evil-vile-horrific-fear-inducing-dragon-spawns-of-vegetables!!”
Maybe the retal could be nerfed a teeny bit? What’s so scary about swiftness?
Hm, I’m told by friends that I’m simply too aggressive in pvp – that would be why I struggle against shatter when I play thief.
Being aggressive as a shatter mesmer is always great, but being aggressive as a thief is not always good.
Curse these two different play styles.
I was wondering when the caltrops would be added.
The problem is that healing power scales terribly with most skills that you’re better off going with soldier or even sentinel as a tanky set, since the power those 2 sets offer is largely more useful than the healing power of Nomads. Unless you literally don’t intend to attack whatsoever.
This is true. I’ve found even with experimenting with nomad, you still need some power to deal enough damage to tag. I think nomad was intended to be mixed with other stats, and not go full nomad.
I forgot to mention another great use for nomad in WvW: siege bunker.
Everyone else runs away while I stand there and ram the gate/cata the walls.
Easier said than done, really. Someone is always going to figure out a method to scam someone else. The Trading Post avoids every possibility of a scam, and acts as a reliable gold sink to boot.
I have a nomad guardian. It’s ultra OP in EOTM lootstick farming.
Damage? Why? Everyone’s an uplevel anyway. And I can tank undergeared uplevels.
Shatter mesmers always give me trouble, in pvp and wvw. (Ironic, seeing as I play a shatter mesmer >.> ) I have no issues picking out the mesmer among the clones – it’s keeping up with the damage pressure.
PU is no problem – just takes time and whittling. But shatter isn’t played like PU. My tactics on thief is usually: pull back, bait, toy the enemy, watch for an opening, then burst in fast and go for kill." And that doesn’t seem to apply to counter shatter.
Advice?
I never really understood why so many like the rock dog – at least when playing against a thief. It’s a free CnD. Aren’t strength runes just…better?
Welcome to the thieves. And don’t feel wary about stating your hate on us. Thieves get a lot of hate.
-whispers- Sometimes, we try to encourage hate to make the enemy so full of rage they fumble for our easy kills. Dirty fighters, we are.
Today, I went void jumping.
That’s technically not against the rules, right?
If you really want to duel wield fire with a thief, there’s the incinerator. http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Incinerator
And craftable tacos.
And I support this. Tacos!
From my understanding, mounts were purposely avoided because developers wanted players to experience the wide open world. Not rush from one point to another.
(this is what I heard through the grapevine. Don’t smite me)
@ Flufferz – that looks fun for PvP, but way too glassy for WvW. But I enjoy trying new mesmer builds, so I’ll give yours a shot. ^^
Anyway, would someone be so kind as to rate my theory crafted build before I go off and farm for it? While it got lost in the debate about celestial gear…
1. Took 5 tries in the Mystic forge to get Zap.
2. got The Hunter as a random drop in Caudacus Manor.
…I’m just lucky.
Um.
Ok, I’m just gonna go on a limb here, and ask…
Is this a troll build?
Anyway, I threw together this build: http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fhAQJARWlknpRttpxMNcrNipBh6xUnlSyAUhSGixB-TVjFAB1eBAaRVFCeAAkoJAgjAgH6ACUJIw7PMjaFXohxJlZKp0A5DBApAKTXF-w <looks good? I’d very much prefer getting a solid idea for the gears before I go off and get them.
I might swap perplexity runes for traveler runes, and the trinkets are up for change. Could even drop 2 points in illusion for domination’s power block/confounding suggestions. Any tweaks to optimize it?

Interesting. I tried to CC one of these skritt (random in the desert, not the ones circling the giant) and he was invulnerable. Made me curious since this skritt popped up under a ledge of an unexplored area.
Has anyone got info on these little guys? They act so strange…
I found a small group in the far corner circling around a dead giant. And another tossing trash at the Pact member in the camp. There’s also one I saw popping out of a skritt tunnel then diving back in.
They’re tagged as aggressive, but whenever you approach one, they turn around and flee. I wonder if there’s some kind of mini event that can let you interact with them.
Maybe we’re looking at it incorrectly. Venoms reminds me of the mantras of mesmers. However, Mantras are majorly PvE – most mantras are only taken in the favor of utility for pvp, over complete optimization in a build. (There are exceptions like optimizing mantras and taking the heal mantra, but it requires plenty of practice to use it to its fullest potential)
What if venoms are meant for PvE? Condition damage PvE? Certainly no use in dungeons, eh. Maybe solo roaming in open world?
/shrug
Oooh. That looks fun. How does it deal in survivability?
Hmm. I wonder if full rabid double-shatter style is viable for wvw…or perhaps dire/rabid.
Honestly, I want to play around with condi, but I’m not a fan of the meta PU.
Who are these people, or what info do we have about them? It came up doing the living story for me, since I’m a mesmer myself. (not sure if that’s a requirement, but most likely)
It’s a safe guess that Countess Anise is possible member.
I use venom as often as I can on my thief! Yes indeed.
Basilisk Venom is so useful. -nod nod-
This. Is. Win.
So much win.
I also got a box for the shoulder pieces, after our map killed all 5 of them. Although I don’t think that will happen every time.
Oh good, it’s fixed. Thanks Anet.
Nice concept, needs tweaking.
Price of being nice. I pay 2g out of my pocket, help a group of people get the champion’s key, but get attacked in the process by insensitive trigger happy morons. Had to spend a revive orb just to get my loot, only to get attacked again, where I can do nothing to fight back. And the people who want to help me, can’t do kitten.
…Really? Come on. If people are going to get attacked, let them fight back. There’s no fun in being nice, helping others, only to end up getting bullied. Partly can’t blame them if they didn’t know any better, and after I vent I guess I can forgive them (just a game after all). And if they got a kick out of it, well…their low self-esteem explains it.
Anet, please. Fix this so some other unfortunate player doesn’t go through the same issue. After this, I just feel a lot less compelled to be nice and helpful to others.
I need an excuse for a new armor set, but I don’t know what build I can combine it with. I already have berzerker, dire, and soldier sets. What’s a 4th set I can use efficiently for my mesmer? Preferably one with a sword/focus?
That’s a pretty good point…I know other currencies don’t end up in the wallet because they’re used in crafting in some way, but those items aren’t.
I really enjoyed reading all the lore in the library. I actually wished there was more to read when I finsihed the last book. Looks like if I want more lore, I gotta get my hands on the original GW.
I especially like how one of the books in the library sums up, “No. Dragons are not the human gods.” We can finally put that theory to rest. XD
Sentiments echoed. If this really is what the original Guild Wars was like, I really gotta play that too.
I simply adore the detail and artistic work that went into the Durmand Priory’s hidden library. It’s quite beautiful.
I’m slightly worried you’ll do something drastic in the future, like blow it up or bury it, making it forever gone. Like what you did to LA. Or Fort Salma. Or the Zephyrites. You have a history of doing that…
Please, don’t. Not until I get enough time to curl up in this huge library and read all the lore hidden in here.
The world will always have morons and idiots, who will seek for attention. If that includes inciting others with racist remarks, that’s what they’ll do.
Block, report, and move on with your life. Those kind of people are rarely worth the effort.
I have a confession. One boring evening, I annihilated ogres, grawl, and krait, looking for the specific components to unlock the weapons achievements.
I felt bad killing all the ogres and grawl…ogres just want to be left alone in their own land, and some tribes are even peaceful. Grawl are just superstitious creatures that don’t know any better.
But the krait…I enjoyed having my sweet revenge on those creeps.
-sob- so many died! Their screams…their cries…I cringed each time. Even after a few minutes of killing the krait I started feeling a little bad. All just for achievements…

The focus is too much of a magic weapon, and thieves aren’t really magical.
I’m sorry, but I can’t even see how those animations would be sexual. You’re a hardcore adventurer and you got a crink in your back. you stretch. You’re boredly looking around and fidget with a stone under your boot. What’s wrong with that?
Question: do we have any proof that they were first removed because of sexual issues? Or is that all just speculation?
I soloed him on my ele. ._. I’m not even good with playing ele.
Every now and then i enter a path sellers lfg and say they should be ashamed of themselves. Then exit the group.
You…do know…some people can solo the path for sale? Not every path seller is a greedy money-making-kick-poor-random-troll.
Edit: oh wow, I just now notice this is a necro thread. GG on me.
Melee staff. Make it happen. I don’t care if spell casters use it to shoot fancy spells, I’m gonna whack you in the head with it.
switch your dagger offhand for a pistol, and you’ll do fine. I’ve found s/d to just be too single target focused to properly cut down the camp veterans. AOE blinds, interrupts, and melee cleave makes it much easier.
Wait. Is that for….female? Yes, yes, and yes! Please be light armor, pleaaase be light armor!
outfit….
I am okay with that too. :p But it’s finally some clothes that look like decent robes.
Wait. Is that for….female? Yes, yes, and yes! Please be light armor, pleaaase be light armor!
