Again, it’s a portion of the playerbase that has decided that the game is unplayable without the absolute BiS gear. The rest of us are out there playing the game in mix-n-match armor. Funny thing is that we’re doing just fine.
The truth of the matter is that yes, there are situations where it will make a difference, but in general, you can succeed at things that you wish to do without the latest and greatest.
I have no trouble doing invasions, hearts, events, farming, and even WvW in Exotics. If I get a legendary or Ascended someday, then great! but I am not going to ruin my in-game fun with the overwhelming need to grind for gear. There is simply too much out there to do OTHER than worry about what color my gear is.
@ the OP: I understand your frustration. If gaining Ascended gear is all you play for, then I understand perfectly why you would want to leave the game.
Before you go, however, I would like you to ask yourself this: If you had ascended gear for all of your characters, and you were fully geared with everything you ever wanted, what would you do then? The corollary to that is this: If you can’t think of anything, then maybe the length of time it takes to get the gear you want isn’t really the problem.
I wish you well with whatever you decide to do.
A fair test of skill would involve two players, with the exact same profession, skillbar, traits, gear, weapons, accessories, upgrades, race, proficiency and everything else fighting 1v1 in a closed arena… Only then would you see a true test of skill necessary to win the match.
PvE events do not involve skill so much as a knowledge of the AI and progression of said event. Rather like riding a bike; the first time you end up bruised (and sometimes broken) and then you get better at it as time and practice goes on.
The best show of skill in the game right now is how SOME commanders direct their part of WvW. Notice I did not say ALL commanders. There are some who are absolutely brilliant in their tactics, while others are simply running from point to point, confident that the zerg that follows them will take care of the situation.
All of this is, of course, merely my opinion of the issue. Others will see things differently.
Cheers!
DPS comes in many forms. I have seen Necros with Rabid gear kill a host of mobs in the same time that it takes a Zerker warrior kill 1.
I am hoping that the TQ is going to be more like a raid situation in which it will be NECESSARY to have other builds in order to take him down. Somebody has to protect all these zerker single target killers while the dragon DoTs them to death.
I think coordination and tactics will win out in the end, not specific builds.
Only you can decide if it’s time to quit.
The biggest issue I see in threads like this is that “I’m unhappy because I can’t get ____________.” If the reward is unsatisfying to you, and you aren’t happy just playing, then I think you’ve answered your own question.
If you truly do like the game, then just play. Don’t worry about working toward something you feel is unreachable, and don’t fret about not getting (X) gold per hour. There is a lot to do in the game. Just because someone else is farming, or running dungeons, or grinding gear doesn’t mean you have to. Unless you’re a WvW expert, the added stats aren’t going to make that much of a difference in what you do.
I have tried to play Charr… Really, I have…
but…
between armor clipping and horrid facial creation choices, I can’t “feel” anything for them except mirth when I see them run.
I love silly names. I have seen some that made me spit my drink all over my keyboard. The ones I don’t like are the truly offensive stupidity that comes out of some 12 year old’s fantasies.
Some good ones I’ve seen:
Manly Butterflies (male human mesmer in Beta…my favorite)
Hice Ensalada (Spanish for “I made salad”)
My necro is Ella Cynder… and I used to have a female Charr engineer named Umblethina.
(personal opinion alert!!!)
It seems to me that Mai Trin is Canthan, or at least “looks” Canthan…
Wiki Link here: Mai Trin
I can’t believe that the story arc that had her in it will be the last we see of her, nor do I believe that she just “appeared” out of the blue to help with the political intrigue.
In my imagination, I see her as being a key link to Cantha in some future story. I think it would be awesome if she were our way into Cantha.
Thanks, Nemesis!
You always manage to astound me with your effort. Cheers!
The Champion Ogotl Priestess in Brisban Wildlands just SW of the vista that you have to get to through Skrittsburg Center. I haven’t seen anyone in many times visiting
This one, I take it?
I actually tried to fight her and found that she’s a machine gun dart shooter, so….yeah, no wonder she goes unfought, along with her being very out of the way to get to.
That’s the one
Up until the “new” boss chests, the rewards for killing her were horrid. Makes me wonder what her rewards are on the new scale…
This just comes down to Stat Snobbery…
Ppl mad b/c they don’t get Berzerkers 24/7 as drops. Even though speed clearing 5 Dungeons in 1 hour which = easy Shards to just craft their own stats instead…
….I’m Playing a very very very small Violin for them right nowGet It
I’ll keep time for you…
I refuse to work that hard for something that isn’t that much of a stat increase. If I ever become a hardcore player, or really get into WvW more than I am, then I will rethink it.
I’ll make it short:
1. YOU are the only person who can decide whether it is worth playing or not. You’ve already spent your $60 (else you wouldn’t be here) so just go play. When you make 80, and have experienced the game, then you can tell if it was worth it or not.
2. If you pay attention to the forums, the game is either dying, thriving, too hard, too easy, stagnant, vibrant, great, horrible, a grind, or not a grind… Go play. Make up your own mind and don’t let what other people think make your decision for you.
Good luck to you!
Gems…(just kidding)
I found that I seem to make more gold when I’m not trying to. I just play. I do what I want, vendor the stuff that won’t sell on the TP for more than the vendor price, and salvage for high-end mats. I don’t farm, and I don’t play the market. I just play. Some days I make 5 or 6 gold, some days more, some days less. There’s just nothing out there that I need right now, so I am spending less than I make.
ok, first, the obligatory “Don’t play at school” admonishment…
Now… the important thing… What did you throw in there to get it? (just curious, as I know I will never get anything…my r/l luck factor is -9000%)
Well, since Xavi didn’t post a pic, I’ll rate Kyvia…
I would give you a 7/10 mostly because there’s so much flame that would be better suited to Elementalists. I do like the combo with the back pieces.
Here’s mine (I can’t make the image show up, so here’s the photobucket link:)

Personally, I am happy they’re bound. It’s bad enough that legendaries are (insert unreal price here.) I’d hate to see what a top-end Ascended would go for.
If you must have them that badly, then make your own. Buying them only serves to show of that you have more money than I do (or anyone else for that matter.)
I feel your (plural) pain, I really do, but…
I consider myself and “average” player. By average, I mean I am not elite, I am not geared with BiS, and I am not by any means the best player in the game. Far from it, I would say…
I find myself playing as much today as I did the first weeks. Why? It’s really simple. I enjoy the game. I don’t have to farm, I don’t have to zerg, and I don’t have to have all the new shineys. On the other hand, I can join the nearest zerg, or I fan farm, or do anything else the game has to offer. Sometimes I log in just to say hi to friends and hang out to compare armor.
I can’t tell you that you “have to love the game” or that you have to hate it, but I can say that as long as I am having fun doing “whatever” I will still play.
My advice to the rest of you is simple: If you don’t enjoy it any more, there are tons of games out there that you might enjoy better.
Good luck to you all.
I’m not going for either… if I get one someday, ok, but for now, I’ll keep on keepin’ on with my exotics until it gets to the point where I can’t do what I want to do.
No matter what ANet come up with, there will be those that complain.
Up until recently, there was complaints about the content being too easy, and that there was no vertical progression, and nothing to do.
So, now ANet has given us the Living Story (doesn’t matter if you like it or not, it’s there if you want to do it,) they’re going to upgrade Tequatl, and now they’re introducing ascended gear blah blah blah.
The key is that the difference between Exotic gear, Ascended gear, and Legendary gear is that their stats are not so far apart that the general joe can’t compete if they don’t get the latest and greatest.
I hope it stays that way, no matter how many tiers of armor they add.
I hate zoning. Zone from Queensdale to Kessex, and oops…have to zone… now I’m in Overflow, but not the same overflow as my party, have to zone again to “join them” oops… there goes the event I was trying to do….blech!
I hate that we can’t move individual chat windows around so I can see more than one chat at a time.
I hate that the guild menu is so lacking.
I hate Bifrost’s rainbows that it generates on the guy running in front of me. Not sure why…just don’t like them. Might be that they’re just too…too…“cutesy” for me.
Will Rabid still be gear of choice in PvE?
Doubtful, seeing as with this new set you gain extra survivability and don’t loose overall damage.
Of course, this will change if they don’t have any prescision… no matter what your damage is, you need the crit factor for certain sigils, runes, and crests.
The multiple guild issue isn’t a problem in most cases. Yes, there are some guilds out there that require 100%rep, but in truth, they are few and relatively far between. Most of them are (trying to avoid the term “hardcore”) more organized and and adhere to some sort of schedule. Social guilds, not so much.
Representing one guild 100% of the time defeats the “multiple guild” capabilities of the game, but I can see where it could be useful in specific situations as vaguely mentioned above.
If given the choice, I would rather have the “last log-in” feature instead. Other than guessing or requiring web site attendance, there is no way to tell when someone quits the game or has been gone so long that you forget them.
When doing the event, I have found that most people will center on a commander tag. I’ve gone to combat points without commander tags, and there might be 2 or 3 people there. So, in a way, the tags do have a use, if only to gather a lot of people in one spot.
I don’t have a problem with folks gathering at commander tags. The more people, the more champs, and the event tends to finish despite the best efforts of the farmers not to complete. Hanging out with the zerg gets me a few lootbags and whatnot, and the whole experience is pretty fun for me.
I DO have a problem with commanders (among others) being kittenbags toward non-farming players. I tend to want to screencap and report any of them who are, and hope that someday ANet will actually punish them.
I don’t think the problem is the meta issue of farmers vs non-farmers. This event is hard to not finish. There’s just too many people doing it. As long as there is money to be made, there will be someone farming it, and someone else complaining about it.
I am a level 80 Elementalist… so I was wondering why I wasn’t able to do crap underwater (mostly because I don’t do it often) and thought maybe I was just not traited correctly…
Then one of my guildies asked to see my trident…when I linked it to him it was still level 30-ish…I had fought underwater so little that I never thought to upgrade it.
There have been a number of threads in the suggestion forum about needing more guild tools, but they seem to get buried under the “we want more/less zerg and more/less stuff” whines.
To address the issues in this thread:
1. The date someone joined isn’t that important. Unless your guild has specific seniority rules, in which you could actually do this on your guild’s website if you have one.
2. This I agree with. I know a lot of my guild plays at odd times, and I don’t always see them. It would be nice if I could see how long it has been since they played when I log in instead of relying on email or website visits.
3. There is already a guild chat channel, and it’s pretty adjustable as to what you want to see in that chat window.
4. This would be a good thing. Not everyone visits websites, and it would be good to be able to take a quick look to see what’s coming up next week.
I would add this to your list:
1. Mass email capabilities for the Leader. Being suppressed after 2 or 3 emails of the same thing is an all-around PITA. It would be nice to be able to send out a “newsletter” of sorts to everyone, but it would take a week to get everyone their mail under the current system.
I want the title omnichromatic ;-)
Perfect! I want one too!
I have yet to hit 4K achievements. Why? well, aside from having a life, which doesn’t count, I have to say, it’s the volume of minor achievements you have to get in order to qualify for the primary.
By the time I get into the game, and run after the zerg to get to the LS and get the next part, I’m in overflow, where the event isn’t happeneing. So, I go back to LA, or Hoelbrak, or DR (doesn’t matter really) and do the other things that are still around in the game. There is no reason for me to break my back trying to fit it all in. I don’t want to do that to myself.
Burnout is something I have thankfully not had to deal with yet, but I could see how it would be for many who absolutely have to have all the points, all the shineys, and all the content they can possibly squeeze into a 24 hour day.
If they would just slow it down a bit…and maybe give us a bit more time to do them in…and not make us feel that if we don’t get in on the first day that we’re not going to get in at all.
Good luck, everyone.
I think out of about 100 tries, I have only gotten into one (yes, one) overflow that actually has an event. The other 99 have all said “Not active in this overflow.”
I don’t mind being in an overflow if I am doing random hearts, DEs or whatever, but if the “main event” doesn’t pop in the overflows, what’s the point of trying? Hanging out and watching the LS list on your UI is the only option for even having a chance to get in on the event itself.
I wonder how many people are actually being left out because the events don’t “overflow” with the people doing them.
Because of this issue, I will more than likely not be able to even finish the meta achievements for this LS.
Good job, folks… /endsarcasm
Better guild tools…like:
1. a way to email everyone in the guild in one fell swoop
2. a way to tell when the last time a player was online AND representing your guild
3. Separate “invite” privileges and “Kick” privileges
I’ve died a LOT.
The funniest was a portal that somebody put in LA as a joke…it ported you high above the city, where you promptly fell to your death. Sadly, (or hilariously, depending on your PoV…) there were like 20 dead bodies at the splat point
Most of the time, tho, its’ my own fault for aggroing too many mobs, dodging off the nearest cliff, missing the diving goggles jump off point, or simply walking into situations that are way out of my league. Note to self: Don’t try to get a level 15 area skill point when you’re level 5…
I am in the “Don’t stop it, but slow it down a bit” group.
I like the idea that we have new content, albeit temporary every few weeks, but…there is so much of it that I think a large bloc of us are overwhelmed.
I am not worried that I missed a few LS “chapters.” I didn’t do much of the Flame and Frost, and I didn’t do any of the Southsun Cove, but I got in on a bit of the Aetherblade/Zephyr Sanctum stuff, and I did enjoy it. The current Clockwork Chaos story is a lot of fun for me, even if it is a zerg-fest.
The worst part about the whole thing is that it’s being pushed too fast. Things should be a bit more relaxed. Logging in and knowing that I only have 2 weeks (or 3) to be able to fit all of the achievements and abilities in is frustrating. There’s enough content there to be able to spend a month or two on it. In the end, I wind up hanging around in LA wondering what to do next. By the time I’ve made up my mind, the content is gone, and on to the next.
TL;DR:
Don’t get rid of it. Just slow it down some.
I am still trying to figure out if there is a reason other than aesthetics that would make someone want to have multiple of the same class. Am I missing something or is that it?
I have 2 of the same. I have them both geared according to a different play style. If I’m heading to WvW, I use one, and if I am going to PvE, I use the other. Also, if I have a friend holler for someone to go do (insert activity here) then I can grab either and go, rather than fish around for 20 minutes re-traiting and re-gearing. If Anet ever institutes one-button gear swapping, one will probably be either a mule or get “retired.”
I have to agree with some of what you’re saying, but disagree with other parts.
The Living Story is a lot of fun if you don’t take it too seriously. It’s not meant to be the whole game. There is an arcing theme of most of it, however, it’s difficult to see.
The first Sountsun LS was mroe or less a “test” event in my opinion. It showed what was possible, but unfortunately, it was badly implemented, and relatively disliked by a lot of people. It was also a stand-alone event, with nothing tied to it except a still-broken lighthouse in LA.
The whole Flame and Frost LS was not too bad, although there were parts of it that were pretty slow. It’s just that the best parts went away after it was over, and that LS more or less ended after Southsun. Now I only go there for the occasional mat run.
Now we have Clockwork Chaos. It is the culmination of the LS that started with the Aetherblade Pirates and the Zephyr Sanctum. The way they tied in was pretty good, actually, with the pirates showing up first, then the Evon/Erin election, and finally the Queen’s Pavillion, which in turn was ruined by Scarlet and the Clockwork minions.
Taken from a relatively objective point of view, it is a good idea. It’s the implementation that is leaving a lot to be desired.
I think we all have a case of overload. We are at a point now that there are so many achievements, gizmos, and skins that we cannot support more of the same. When Clockwork Chaos ends, we need a bit of a break, and allow us to catch up on other things.
Right now, a brand new player will log in and see that there is so much going on, that they can’t catch up and be competitive with everyone else. They’re hearing things like “Ascended gear” and stories that they missed before they bought the game. I could almost see where they would think that there was no way they could ever catch up to those who have been playing for a year and have all their kitten.
The thing is that in general, I like the IDEA of the living world, just not the pace. I’m overloaded and I think we all need a bit of a break. Even a week or two without any LS at all going on would be nice, just to be able to sit back and take stock of where we are and where to go from here.
1. Elementalist – most adaptable, and the largest skill pool.
2. Necro – MM to level, Condition when you get there
3. Thief – but pay attention. They’re squishy!
4. Mesmer – again, you have to pay attention. This is the easiest class to pick up, but the most difficult to master.
5. The rest… I don’t have too much in the way of experience with the rest..
The thing is, nobody is rushing you. Play them all to at least 20 before you settle on a profession to be your “main.”
Cheers!
The Bazaar from EQ1…
The trading post is ok for finding a few things, but the bazaar in EQ1 was great!

Numbers can prove or disprove anything.
Concurrency is misleading because everything depends on exactly what time of the day/month/year that someone sampled the numbers. Midnight PDT will be different than midnight Sydney time.
Look at it this way (simplified, I know, but good for illustration): In general, most people own a car. Also in general, most people are not in their cars. So, if 7 million people own cars, there may only be 100K of them actually in the car on the road at any given time. It doesn’t mean that those who are not in their car won’t use them today, it means that for whatever reason (i,e, work, life, sleep, school, etc) they are not actually in their car. Give them a few hours, and those who are in their cars now won’t be, and those who aren’t now will be stuck in traffic.
This is a game, people. It’s not meant to be “used” 24/7. It’s a way to relax. Some will log in for hours at a time and some will log in for a few moments. Saying that only 300K out of a million people are logged in at any given time isn’t an accurate portrayal of the actual proportion of owners to players.
If you mean truly retired (meaning done everything you want to with it after maxing it out and will most likely never be played again) and not simply underplayed due to class changes/nerfs/whatever, then no, I have never retired one. The ones I do not play are still around, but they’re not truly retired, because I have situation-specific builds on them.
I have deleted a few higher-leveled ones because they became unplayable (for me) or the class has changed so much that I can’t get into them.

Welcome to GW2!
My opinion is to not worry about leveling. Enjoy the game. Do hearts and Dynamic Events. Try WvW. The levels will come.
Once you play for a while, then worry about crafting. I personally waited until I was about 60, and then only because I wanted to try it. Now I am maxed in 5 or 6 of them.
The point is that you can craft at any level. You don’t EVER have to craft if you so choose. Do it when you want to.
Cheers!
I like the Living Story for what it is…something “new” to do every so often.
What I would really like, tho, is some of that content to stick around that doesn’t involve mini-games or fluff.
I would have loved to see the dungeon from the Flame and Frost story stay, and I would love to see the Pavilion stay.
WHat I really want, tho, is more territory to open up. See what’s up in the Isles of Janthir, or go back to the Crystal Desert. There’s a lot of the existing map that I would like to see.
Having said that, I would hope that they don’t implement it like they did with Southsun Cove.
I would rather see them come up with “There’s a new land and new peoples to the North that needs to be explored” with new hearts, DEs and races. This is the type of content I hope they introduce bit by bit. Better than paying another (insert amount here) for another box. It’s just not as fun if my friends can’t or won’t buy the “new” box.
42 .
Have you got your towel?
YES!
Oh, and Scarlet is Trahearne’s ex-wife and she’s still PO’d because he got the better end of the settlement… Hell hath no fury and all that…
I participated in Ember farm a few times. I enjoyed it, but, having arthritis makes it difficult to be competitive. So,a s a result, I didn’t realize the mass money that others did.
So, I found a different thing to do. I found an item that I can craft with some degree of profit. I can make more doing that than I can farming.
I understand both sides of the argument about farming, but what it all boils down to is that there is a bloc of people who LIKE to farm. Let them farm. I don’t see them telling those who don’t like it that THEY have to farm in order to play the game.
What I’m saying is don’t tell me how to play and I won’t tell you.
My complaint is that I wish they would “say something” when you get supressed. The first time it happened to me, I thought my game client was wonky and logged out and back in something like 4 times before I realized my chat was being suppressed. A short message would have been nice.
But yes, I agree. In WvW, especially, Commanders should have a bit more time and leeway in being suppressed. Some people simply can’t “hear” them until they’ve said something 3 times…
My only complaint about a commander tag, whether they’re good or bad, is that when they log in and stand directly on a waypoint, and they don’t move, I can’t click on it, only their name.
Other than that, if they bother you so badly, don’t go where they are. Simple, really.
/agree
I miss it too.
um….no….
Just because you perceive that there is nobody wandering around doesn’t make it so.
There will always be those who take the easiest, most expedient way from point A to point B, but there are wandering bands of players as well.
Removing waypoints will have the opposite effect. People will not come to the zones that have no waypoints unless they absolutely have to.
So, while I respect that you have an opinion, I also respectfully disagree.
Spending (insert insane amount of gold here) on something isn’t going to make it “special” no matter how you slice it.
Of all the weapon skins I have had, the one that made me the happiest was the Pact Staff. Yes, I know it’s not legendary nor is it even that spectacular. The one thing that it is, though, is special. You can only have 1 pact weapon per character, and you can only get it by completing your personal story. To my knowledge, it’s the only weapon skin in the game that you can ONLY get by completing an epic, map covering story line that involves numerous “quests” and tasks. So, go ahead…laugh…Pact weapons are the only “special” weapons in the game.
No, this is not another whine thread about the lack of farming opportunities. Please don’t make it into one. Whether what we do is right or wrong isn’t important at this point. It’s the fact that we do it.
Back in GW1, one of the things we (my guild and I) loved to do was farm for “unique” boss drops. We outfitted our whole guild with “greenies” and named items, and it was fun all around.
In my opinion, farming for something worthwhile was worth ever hour we spent.
So, here we are in GW2. Farming is still fun (sometimes) but in truth, what are we farming for? Mats? Exotics to salvage/sell? bags of stuff? In essence, all we are farming for is a way to make money, however we choose to farm it.
Therein lies some of the problem. When it’s easier and more lucrative to fail events or run through a dungeon with higher drop rates, we will continue to run into the issues we had with Ember Farm and CoFp1.
The question I have for you is this: Why don’t you give those of us who enjoy some farming something to farm for?
The champs that spawn could still drop whatever they drop, but make it worthwhile to finish events or run other paths. Give the final “boss” something unique that you can only get through finishing him/her off. Don’t sell it in the gem shop, and don’t offer it up as a RNG lottery. Make it a reasonable chance of dropping, and let us farm away.
For Instance: Final Rest – It’s a unique staff skin, with decent (not perfect) stats that drops somewhat regularly from the Shadow Behemoth. I farmed the heck out of that event until I got one. I had a blast doing it, but if it ever shows up in the gem store or as a random BL chest drop, I would be sad. I put a lot of effort into getting it, and I am proud of it. Probably more proud than anything else I have gained through a drop.
I would be much more likely to participate in other major (world) events and go champion hunting if we had something like this to work for. I always thought it would be cool to farm the Hylek Priestess in Brisbane for a froggy scepter a la GW1. or farm the skelk in Mt. Maelstrom for a lizard shield… or farm the Giant in Melchor’s for a hammer…or any other wandering “non-event” champion for their unique drop.
What say you all? would you be more willing to finish events and/or hunt champions if they dropped unique offerings?
Thanks for listening.
Oh, for cat’s sake…
How about we wait and see what they put in there before we nerdrage? I am personally thinking it will be things they offered in the gem store before.
If they put in skins and whatnot from the RNG boxes, then I’ll rage right along with you, but if they’re gem store “exclusives” then it’s simply smart business sense.
So, I think I’ll wait and see.
