How about a change of topic?
What does the balance team think of the “Hard to Catch” and its sister traits “Last Refuge” and “Instinctual Response”. I say sister traits because as far as i’m aware, these seem to be the only traits in the game that can get you killed. Traits that can effect you position without your control, or put you in a revealed state by accident isn’t really well design imo.

The only thing black powder can’t provide is protection against carpet bombing down targets.
Keeping in mind we can still teleport stomp, with shadow step, but we are still giving up a utility/actual stun break to do.

From what I understand, using IS requires using a utility anyways, or burning your Steal.

Yeah you burn your steal (35-20s cooldown) with it, instead of burning shadowstep (50-40s cooldown.)

Steal can be a huge part of a number of builds, depending on how you’re spec’d. It can
-Heal, do damage, and poison
-trigger Might/Fury/swiftness
-restore initiative
-trigger stealth

and sacrificing all that versatility (not claiming all those abilities happen when you steal, just that you can specc’d for some of them) for a stomp, plus 5 initiative is so strong it needs to be nerfed? On the only class that can’t go immune, with no access to stability, and the lowest base Health pool in the game?

I mean, this sounds extremely anti-thief to me.

my understanding from all this is that teleport stomp is not the reason for the nerf, it’s just an unfortunate casualty.

Start Finish > Return (safe area) > Steal, Inf signet, shadowstep back to land the finisher

There are a few ways for this:
1)Down enemy
2)Precast Inflitrators Strike
3)Press F
4)Teleport to another close by enemy somwhere near with either Steal or Infli Signet
5)Wait a Moment
6)Use Shadow Return

Might be usefull against a Guardian if you don’t have Shadowstep, or when it’s
on cool down, since the Blind from Tactical Strike isn’t as reliable.

But but of those methods require preparation and/or burning Steal or one of your utilities. Did this really make the sword teleport that problematic that it needs to have the instacast taken away?

And it still sounds like less of a guaranteed stomp than the safety that Black Powder or Blinding Powder can provide.

The only thing black powder can’t provide is protection against carpet bombing down targets.

Infiltrator’s Return
The thing I have heard the second most discussion regarding. This is a big change to this skill, but we beleive it is a necessary one. In many cases this is not going to matter. There are only 2 situations where this is a truly impactful change.
1) It stops you from using this skill while stunned, which puts more burden on Sword/Dagger thieves saving their stun breakers. This is the kind of gameplay we want to encourage because it puts more risk in using a rewarding skill like Infiltrator’s Strike.
2) Mostly in PvP, this skill can no longer be used by S/D thieves to teleport stomp someone. This is actually the more impactful moment as it occurs more often, but I think it puts the burden on these players to run a second weapon set that can help them in these situations (OH pistol for instance.)

No, no, no, and no. The reason I absolutely am 100% against this change is the entire thief class is built around the idea that abilities are instant with no cast time with no cooldown (on weapon skills), because they are the only class with a resource pool for their abilities. Make it cost more initiative or give a debuff that slows down initiative gain. Reduce the damage, change the range, etc etc… I don’t care about that. What bothers me is the adding a cast time to a class who’s core mechanic is all about no cooldowns and being able to quickly maneuver around.

I’m not sure what you mean by instant, but this is currently the only instant weapon ability. We are not adding a HUGE cast time to this skill. This skill is going to have a 360 millisecond cast time. ~1/3 of a second.

I think he is just getting cool down and cast time mixed up.
Even so, if it had no cast time and you just couldn’t use it while you were disabled or in the middle of an action. That would still be a hard hit for the Mh sword.

He does bring up a point about trying to limit this in some other way without that cast time. Has the decision on this skill already been set in stone?

You can still avoid follow ups with this. 360 milliseconds is faster than almost any attack and certainly faster than almost all dangerous ones. The only loss here is using this while stunned and using it to teleport finish an opponent.

Other than using it for stomps, wouldn’t protection against stuns be the best way to use it?

I want to point out I really like the fact that for the most part, the main issues people are having with this update are
Sword #2
Opportunist ( and it’s effect on unload and pw)
Hard to catch
And to a lesser extent, other classes having vigor on crit while there is supposed to be a vigor cut across the board.

…. But very little discussion about stealth and the changes to IoS
I just find it funny

I couldn’t find a thread to place this in. Here is a summary of what I have seen discussed on the thief changes and some more clarity into what our initial thoughts were and where we stand currently.

Initiative changes
We believe this is one of the most controversial but important changes this patch. The important thing to understand is that we have been and will playtest this a lot more before we push this change. The default rate of initiative regeneration was simply to low and was causing players to either take traits to suppliment it, or to have their effectiveness suffer. This is something that has to change. What these changes intend to do is to increase the power of every single thief build that is not running these traits, and to ever so slightly reduce the maximum amount of initiative you can have per second if you min/max those traits. I know its easy to theorycraft what is going to happen here and there is a lot of danger in that. It is hard to get a sense of this change without playing it, and believe me if I could I would let everyone test a change of this magnitude and gather some more empirical and data driven feedback, but currently our resources are limited, but we still believe that this is a change whose time has come. We will monitor it very carefully when we do release it to make sure it is working as intended.

Thank you for taking the time to come out and give your thoughts these changes, It’s also nice that your still discussing some of the concerns the community has internally. Just a few comments and question about a few things that been said.

Initiative changes
Personally I never had a problem with traiting for initiative management, it was like making a build in GW1 where you had to consider energy management in your build. I always felt is was a nice throw-back to that.

Infiltrator’s Return
This one will hurt a lot i feel, we lose quite a bit of utility. The ability to secure stomp is important imo. Yes black powder can be used in most situations, but what about when your target covered in aoe? Is there anyway to keep the instant cast but can get blacked out during disables?

And just to add to what evilapprentice.6379 has said about Hard to Catch. IMO that trait still won’t be taking a whole lot. It’s a bit too RNG, you can’t really control when you get disabled, or where you’ll end up. It’s the same with Last Refuge, we can’t even tell when it comes off CD, so we can’t prepare.
I know has there been some discussion about too much on the UI, but imo, these traits ( if you want to keep the current function) needs some sort of tell to know when they are active. Even better would be to know when they are about to come off CD.

I’d go for that if the male armors had the same options – let’s see some “sexy” and impractical male armors.

There are several armors when men have their entire chest exposed. (actually looks cool too) Can we get that for women? =P

The male chest is not considered sexual or as sexual as female breasts but nice try.

If you want a “fair trade”, women can have full topless if men are allowed no pants.

It used to be a flat 3 seconds yes, along with the war’s fear, both got changed at the same time, and I remember the complaint being before that.

Also seen a few guardians say “Wow, didn’t know I had that in me O.o”

No idea if it was the same person but several people complained about me playing thief, specifically mentioning shortbow as op and giving thief too much AoE today. I personally have never heard this before and honestly I rarely see a thief without a shortbow on swap. The only trend I saw was that they all tended to be minion classes(ranger, necro, and a mesmer who commented but didn’t really complain) and I guess I can kind of see how it could be annoying. I run a power build and a sigil of fire meaning if they have minions out trick shot almost always procs.

So is there something I’m missing or has the community just found something else to call OP now that LS can’t counter boon bunkers?

They’re going to find something, its just a question of how much of a stretch it is.

My money is on “Stolen skills are too strong!” and “Why are the skills thieves steal better then my version?”

There was a thread in the nerco forum (could have been this one, not sure) a few months ago complaining that thieves had a better fear -_-

Could be a lot of reasons, might be an auto attack,

Or maybe your double tapping your steal, causing you to use the item, which in most cases is an attack, it can happen pretty fast so you might not have notice it, especially during a fight.

Another reason could be if you fire your pistol and steal before the bullet hits the target ( travel time comes effect), then you will get revealed, you can notice this on the shortbow better,

Blinds and Defiant

I understand that blinds should not be able to shutdown boss and champs, especially with some professions able to perma blind. But defiant make blinds completely useless as you can’t really plan if the next attack is going to miss or not.

Instead of a 10% chance of the blinded target missing, what about blind having a 10% chance to apply to defiant target with the hit guarantee to miss.

This way if i see that the blind actually got applied, i know that mob will miss it’s next attack, instead of not even bothering with it as you can not rely on that 10%. May not be prefect but would be better that what we got now.

Played around with it alittle, really cool, but with the 50% chance, it’s not something you can rely on. Thought it really fun to confuse the hell out of people with it. If there was an actually skill that did that 100%, i would love it.

  • The unfortunate side effect of having the player speak with 10 different voices is that it is cost prohibitive, and that the lines are shared. Dialog does not deviate, which means that a charr male PC says the same line as a sylvari female in cinematics in circumstances where any player can talk.

I made a post about this back in dec about this, i can understand cost is a factor, but are there any plans adding more personality too each race in the future, or any wishful thinking at the very least?

And now the logical follow-up question:
What happens if both teams reach 500 at the same time and both teams have the same total player score?

So many variables go into that that it would be almost impossible for each player on each team to match up every other players score on the opposing team WHILE both teams reach 500 simultaneously simply because of all the different variables that affect players individual score on each map…. With the variety of different ways players have to achieve score this would have such a small small chance of happening that I highly doubt it ever could and if it does each team should simply bow and acknowledge the skill of the other and also compliment how well both teams worked well with each other because what you speak of would truly be a feat.

Easy and simple way to test this is to have 2 people enter a custom server, each cap a side point at the same time, and wait until 500.

thought the chance of this happening in a real match would be near impossible….

So the pirates are blind proof and several fights in the gauntlet also cause revealed the entire match. I am not here to yell and pound my chest…however…. i AM here to ask why out of pure curiosity. Dont get me wrong i have ALL the matches done and only missed the 8 crystal achievement so its not like im whining. but im curious if this is a BUG or a direct NERF towards the thief class.

Removing multiple conditions
AOE blinds
Initiative gain
Initiative regeneration
Sneak attack
Back Stab
Tactical Strike
Surprise Shot

To name the main reasons why this is important should go without saying but easier to really look and see the entirety of what it affects. We probably lose 75% or more of our offensive power in several builds because of this. We are also pigeonholed to play a sword build (forced).

Now i understand you probably dont want cheap thieves hiding while invis to reset or heal up etc etc. That said, you also put a relatively short timer in place so that this cannot happen regardless of stealth hiders. I have personally seen dozens of non-thief classes fall from the floor dropping out due to the expiration of the time limit (shows you thakittens a pretty short timer).

With no further ado;

WHY? Can you elaborate and explain please?

I was able to beat them on the 2nd try when I switch to a condition d/d bleeder build. wasn’t that bad imo.
They did explain that you would have an easier time if you change or adapt your build for each fight.

Thief dagger 5 has to hit something to proc stealth. Why should we be any different. Oh btw yes shooting bunny rabbits and stuff will stealth you.

What makes our stealth mechanic clunky is that unlike thieves C&D our skill must: Be targeted, and the target must be in front of you. C&D hits a big area around the thief and inside the theif too, which means all they have to do is walk over a rabbit and press 5. Poof. We have to stop, turn and or back up, target and fire.

I still use it with great success but really it like many things about the ranger is VEXING.

The ranger’s skill is also on a cooldown.

It’s also range

The new hunters shot should be like a ranged blinding powder, rather than a ranged CnD. Stealth for 3 seconds +smoke field for 5 seconds.

I like that idea mechanic

Give it like a 40-60 cd and it might work

You don’t need to take them out anymore. Just go to the vendor and all your currency will show when trying to buy something.

he’s talking about the mystic forge, which relics are required for some recipe, with this update, you can’t take them out of your wallet to put in the MF.

@The Mexican Cookie, with what indigo and vox said, imo it just dumbs down everything and doesn’t allow for variety of play, tho with the current design of the game, i not really hating on it, and understand it’s just better, just asking what could be improved.

@Nike Porphyrogentia, My question wasn’t asking whether back/midline dps/support was efficient (i already know that it isn’t), I was asking how to make it just as efficient has a zerker, what would it take to get those roles more accepted.

So yeah, most people here think that all those things are not needed outside of certain situations, and it’s usually all melee damage, zerker gear, and anything different will not be looked.

So what changes need to be made to those roles to be on equal footing to today’s meta and be more widely accepted.

EDIT: A tactic I use in fights against more skilled players is when my opponent and I are low on HP I let them down me so I can hit them a few times with my downed attack and rally. Afterwards, I proceed to kill them. It works.

Let me correct you here for clarity and other’s understanding. You cannot rally from downing someone. You must defeat them, or another creature/NPC to rally. Simply getting them down does not rally you. Don’t try this at home. You’ll likely die.

I checked wiki to make sure and saw that it was changed on the 17th of last month. I remember being able to rally off of players I downed before then but I didn’t have the chance to try it for a few months. If they fixed it then that would suck but then again how often do people actually get to that point in fights? :I

You’ve always had to defeat another player, not down, it’s been this way since…..well ever. if you check the history for rally, you can see it states this way back when the page was first created.

Roll for Initiative isn’t a stun breaker, it just breaks immobilized type stuff (where you can still attack but movement is hindered). It’s also not completely an insta cast since it’s influenced by attack delay. Anyway, for having a 60 second cooldown while not breaking stun, this spell needs to not be influenced by attack delay (like blinding powder).
I play with Roll for Ini but I also always have a true stun breaker, mostly shadowstep or init sig. Sorry, roll won’t completely replace shadowstep.

I think having a lot of CCs and stab should be important in this map, but not to a point where spamming it is more effective.
what about railings around the cannon platform to prevent from being knock over, railings that go down after while or say after the cannon fire (using all the energy) and come back after 5-15 secs,
The disappearing floors could have a long timer before they pop, or a CD before they can be popped again. What i’m seeing is as long as you knock your target back onto those floors and immobilize them there, the target has to use a stun break and a cleanse to not fall.

As for the cannon itself, i don’t have an issue with the damage all to much, but not being able to block or dodge it is imo, why not be able to do that? Plus this map has a lot of elevation to it, might be an cool idea to prevent getting hit by the cannon, if it can only hit one point of elevation at a time. Like in Point B, i could target the middle of point, but the people on the ledges wouldn’t get hit. random ideas >_>
