No tank, No healer, No trinity

Since a lot here probably won’t bother clicking the link. lol Colin’s quote from Reddit:

“I think some of my point was either misunderstood or lost here, in particular reading Nikes comments on the youtube section so I’ll try and clarify more simply:

We like the way combat works right now, we really don’t plan to change it much other than add more options with elite specs. It works the way we intended: you can play control, support, and DPS actively. To folks who prefer to define by the holy trinity, Gw2 doesn’t force you to pick one of the three from heal, tank, or DPS and only do that – it blends a mix depending on your build and allows you to actively swap roles or soft play between roles. Our goal was to remove the forced singular role per you’re locked into, people often mistake this as saying gw2 has no trinity elements, that isn’t true – we just don’t believe in a forced role per for Gw2 for the reasons I covered in the live stream.

That said the point I really wanted to make in the live stream was the issue with the combat system in PvE isn’t the combat system. It’s that the mobs and encounters we have provided so far very rarely allow/encourage you to make use of the combat system as intended. There are some exceptions, but one of our goals with HoT is to help allow more room for players to experience the full range of the combat system in PvE. From the common world mobs up to the challenging group content we will talk about later, we are asking our design team to design encounters in PvE more focused on using the system we have built.
Hope that helps a bit! – CJ"

I hope what they’re bringing out in HoT is what he’s talking about.

Why are Revenant's traits SO bad?

in Revenant

Copestetic.5174

Why are you defining how to play the game for other people? What if all they want out of the game is high DPS? They paid for the product – they get to enjoy it how they want. The people critiquing Revenant aren’t saying take away it’s tankiness or support. They are saying open it up to more options. They are literally asking it to be more diverse, not to switch its focus. Why are against this?

I think the inverse of your question can be asked to those wanting to turn it into a more offensive class as well.

RNG as a concept: Discuss

Copestetic.5174

You mean that the economy, or rather the reward system, is broken?
Well, just look at Snowden Drifts or Timberline Falls or Brisbane Wildlands or Fields of Ruin or Iren Marches. Do you know what they have in common? They don’t get visited very often, rather, they get visited almost never. Why is that? Because there is no way of efficiently farm gold in these maps.

The usual GW2 player usually does one of the following tasks:
- Farm in Orr to get T6 mats to sell them
- Farm the boss rotation to get rares/exotics to get ectos or worthy drops
- Farm dungeons to get gold directly
- Farm championtrains

They all do that because of one reason: The chance to get something specific in this game is minimal and dependant on RNG, while buying it with gold is not dependant on luck and is easy to anticipate when you will be able to get it.
The game is build around casuals to such an extent that the designers wanted the player to be able to get anything they want while doing anything they want.
This is the reason why the game lacks specific loot. There is no way to say “I’m gonna farm X to get Y” exept for gold.
The traidingpost shouldn’t be your first choice but your last choice, you should always be constrained to farm the item you want for yourself before considering to buy it from the traiding post, but you are not currently.

But who am I telling this, you heard this plenty of times already.

Pretty much what I said five months ago, and since release. I absolutely hate GW2’s loot system. They’ve always said from the start they didn’t want to fragment the playerbase and have older zones dead once players level-up past them. So what’d they do? Implement RNG bags the entire playerbase farms in the current FotM zone.

They should have kept it somewhat the same as GW1. Specific content rewards ( eventually ) specific skins and materials. For instance, lock Cobalt behind a specific dungeon path or something. While say, Kryta’s Embrace would only come from somewhere in Kryta. By having the option to get the large majority of items from stupid Champion Bags, you ruin any and all incentives to do the content that may or may not be a better source for the item(s) because it’s easier to run around pressing 1, it’s more profitable that doing that specific dungeon/Event/whatever, and eventually you’ll have made enough to buy one of the hundreds or thousands that inevitably show-up on the TP because of over farming.

It’s kittening stupid and boring.

It’d make interrupt skills more potent, and would enable players to time/save them for key skills that have longer cast times. This would be excellent for Mesmers specifically.

I’m for it personally because, let’s face it. In a team fight most people are not using their CC’s to the best of their abilities due to the fast-paced gameplay GW2 provides.

At this time we aren’t planning on selling Mist Champions for Gems.

Whatever you do, please do not sell the characters themselves on the gem store. Sell goofy skins or something for them, but if you put these on the gem store then I’m afraid this would definitely be considered pay2win.

I’m hoping they do decide to sell some on the Gem Store, along with different skins. As long as they keep them ‘balanced’, I see no issues. Maybe with players actually buying stuff for PvP, they’d make some more maps, new reward tracks, or other kinds of goodies.

There’s tons of “Mist Hero” possibilities. It’d be a shame to only see three for the next three years because all the money’s in PvE. Not when there’s heroes like Mhenlo, Cynn, Kuunavang, Glint, Master Togo, Prince Rurik, Gwen, Pyre Fierceshot, General Morghan etc..

List goes on. Stronghold’s not only going to be a breath of fresh air for PvP’ers. It’s an attractive game mode for PvE’ers as well, since it’s not as PvP-focused like Conquest. Adding in more Mist Heroes through the Gem Store could give PvP a boost in content, and player population. Again, as long as ANet keeps them balanced and priced appropriately, I see no problem.

Grateful for the split between Conquest and Stronghold, but Courtyard needs to be split as well like others have said. You got plenty of room up there in that flashy PvP UI to split it up into Conquest, Stronghold, TDM, and your beloved “Practice”. Instead of Enter/Exit just add that little door thing you see in instances and after PvP matches at the bottom right to leave.

Stronghold was advertised to not only require different roles and builds than Conquest, but also to attract different types of players.

If both game modes are in the same queue, we will most likely end up with matches where all players who do not end up in their desired game mode will leave the match immediately. And I couldn’t even blame them for that.

This is one of my concerns as well. But really, who can blame them? We’ve had Conquest forever now. People are tired of it, or just flat-out not interested in it.

Many Chinese youngsters these days carry the grudges of their forebears. I worked with a Chinese lady some years ago. A few years older than me, absolutely hated the Japanese for what they did to her grandparents’ generation. She’s not alone. Anti Japanese sentiment flares up every now and then in both China and Korea. Japanese youngsters don’t know what the big fuss is because successive governments have tried to whitewash it all. My late grandparents lived through the Japanese occupation and one of my grandmother’s had an understandable hatred for Japan.

For a culture is as old and as long lived as China’s they carry their grudges for a long time.

Europe has largely gotten over Germany because they accepted their responsibility. If Japan would do the same, China and Korea could move on

I actually have a Chinese roommate right now, and he literally does not give a kitten about any of that stuff. Very open minded about that, and takes an interest in the foods, traditions, and music of all neighboring cultures. Same with a Korean roommate I had a year ago. Maybe they’re exceptions and I just got lucky, but it seems at least some people are moving on. (I don’t mean that in a “get over it” sort of way. Trying to not be insensitive here.)

Were they Chinese/Korean nationals, or western-born? If the latter, of course they’re not going to care as much as the former.

I did make a point of comparing it to the difference between Japan, China and Korea though.

While when just comparing stuff on its own it might not be considered very similar, but when comparing to something that is much more different it becomes somewhat similar.

I would also not be so swift to join Eastern Europe and especially not Turkey to the “western world”.

How is Japan more different from China than say Germany is from Spain?

Their population is on the decline versus China’s on the rise?

Didn’t read through the thread, but I thought about this the other day. There was an event in beta or something, where the Shatterer swooped overhead and turned players into branded which gave them skills and changed their appearance.

Thought it would a cool idea on a failed event towards the end of the expansion’s content, but with Sylvari PC’s/NPC’s going red, and random players turning into Mordrem.

Past that, no thanks. Open-world PvP has sucked in just about every game I’ve played, and is killed by instanced arenas/battlegrounds.

Personally, I think the “polearm” used by Rytlock in the trailer is a new hammer skin. If you look closely, there’s a head like that of a mace or morning star on it – it might be an example of ArenaNet putting in some realistic two-handed blunt weapon skins as alternatives to those massive hunks of metal the size of the wielder’s head which if you do the maths probably weigh close to if not over a hundred kilos.

it was something like this (real weapon btw)

How about posting the actual picture of the weapon in Rytlock’s hands or on his back rather than some other pic.

Because clearly the weapon he had did not look like that.

Or you could stop being a kitten and pause the trailer when he’s using it.

Would if I was able to watch the video right now and take screen shots… But can’t. So how about backing up your argument that its a hammer with actual screen shots of his weapon and not something else that he not even using…

Not my argument; please don’t assume. Google is your friend. It took me about 15 seconds to find a clear picture of the weapon in-use on the first row of pictures.

You’re going to sacrifice something, we just don’t know yet what that something actually is. From what’s been said so far, it seems like you get a new weapon, and they remove one. New traits, and they remove some old ones. And new skills, while some are removed. If they turn the entire zone into a frustrating JP, then it would be a no go for me. I suck at JPs. Have done a few, but no where near all of them.

I’m slightly worried about this as well. I’ve never been a fan of platform type games, and Dry Top wasn’t my cup of tea when it came to using all the crystals. Trying to jump before the buff ran out to get to that teeny, tiny edge that only your front toe visibly touches, yet supports your entire body while the rest of you is standing in mid-air. Then there was those few days where the entire zone was laggy for everyone, and people would dying all over the place trying to do the JP, or just trying to get across to another rock.

Really looking forward to the new specializations, PvP updates, Guild Halls, and group content, but not so much with this whole Dry Top x 10 thing they seem to be adding.

Specialization = Trinity?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Copestetic.5174

Copestetic.5174

Nope.
There won’t be trinity in GW2 because it’s not designed for it and we don’t need it.
Every class can heal its self and can be tanky by switching gear and traits.

Also, Engineers wear mid armor not heavy.

Never say never. Guardian’s new specialization is still unknown, and Monk ( dedicated healing profession in GW1 ) could very well be “on the table”. While I’m not too fond of the idea of having a specialization that’s dedicated to healing in GW2, I wouldn’t be too shocked if it came to pass.

Keep in mind that HoT’s content is suppose to be the most challenging content they’ve designed for GW2. Something they keep stating in interviews since PAX South. I know that bringing in difficult content doesn’t mean ushering in the Trinity, but depending on the difficulty and the amount of it ( in this case, an expansion worth ), they may feel like it’s their best option to help players combat the rise in difficulty.

If Warrior gets another weapon, it’s probably going to be either a dagger or staff. Shortbow’s a possibility, but we already have Longbows and Rifles. Then again, Rytlock’s had a pistol forever now, so I suppose that’s on the table too. Personally, I’m hoping for daggers but we’ll see.

It might also explain why we’ve received that healing set of gear ( Ventari? ) and new specializations by default.

For weapons, probably going to have to go with Longbow.

This is the PvP forums. When Arenanet said there will be challenging content, I’m pretty sure that’s not cause for concern that there will be a traditional trinity in PvP comps.

You’re focusing too much on one thing I said, when I’m really more concerned about these specializations as a whole; not just a Guardian channeling their inner Mhenlo. The harder content part was used to illustrate how they could implement it alongside these new specializations.

Well there is choice. You’re either a ranger or a druid. There is no advantage when playing a druid over a ranger.

But there seems to be an advantage from what all that I’ve heard. While you may decide to stay a pure Ranger, that dude that went Druid has the same skills as you, the same weapons, and the same traits. Except he has MORE than you from each of the above, and can mix-and-match however he chooses and could make a better BEARBOW build than a normal Ranger! This could ( and will in all likely hood ) give an advantage to a player in sPvP or WvW.

I think it’s crappy just looking at what’s been revealed so far. People have been clamoring for more traits, weapons, and utilities forever now. Now that we’re about to get some, they force us to switch our classes into something that’s more “specialized” than our current ones. There’s an outstanding chance that a lot of people are going to dislike the new specialization, but like some of the weapons, utilities, and traits. So they have an option; play the new specialized class, or keep the same crap you’ve been running for going on three years.

Was it just so hard to add what they did to existing classes?

Currently, I’m not looking forward to the whole specialization thing given what little we know. I picked a class at the beginning of the game because I wanted to be that class. Now they’re telling me that I have to specialize into another class just to get a new weapon, skills, traits, and mechanics. Sure, I don’t have to specialize, but from what it sounds like, it’s either do it and get the new stuff, or enjoy the same thing you’ve been playing with these past few years.

Kinda’ sucks for me from what I’ve gathered about all this. Hopefully they’ll release more information soon.
