The only reason I don’t want the Jade Sea to completely melt is how much i hate underwater combat :P

I hope that if cantha ever return, it will not be another modern garbage with megalasers tanks and terminators (like what’s the Living Story is now).

This is a fantasy game (as far as i know), yet we have so few of old traditions, ancient palces. Only ruins we have to dig for museums. Or to make place for a consortium holiday result. We need the old and beautiful traditional Canthan architercture.

I agree. If they make Cantha a modern day Tokyo, I’d be kitten ed and would literally quit.

Gw1 AI had to be great because heroes and henchman had to perform just like players (at times better) since pets is that only thing that uses that AI in gw2 it really isn’t a concern to the devs.

Wrong. Pets aren’t the only AI around.

Mobs need AI
NPC need AI
Bosses need AI.

You’re right. GW2 AI: Enemy sees player. Enemy runs to player. Enemy uses 1 of 3 skills. Enemy waits 30 seconds, then uses another one.

At least they had full bars ( for the most part ) in GW1.

Possible new class weapons?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Copestetic.5174

Copestetic.5174

I don’t think it’s so far fetched that new weapon skills could be added to existing weapon sets. For example, instead of mesmer greatsword giving exactly 5 skills, let the player choose from a selection of 7 or 8 greatsword skills. If this is too troublesome potentially, you could limit them to a choice of one or two skills per skill slot and work from there.

That isn’t to say new weapon proficiencies won’t be added, just that there’s more than one way to add more weapon skills to a class. I’d like to see more weapon skills either way, as utilities are so narrow that gameplay gets pretty repetitive for me.

This would certainly be technically possible, but the question would be whether it would be possible to balance, or really desirable, because of the confusion it would engender in less adept players (“No, not THAT Greatsword 2, the third Greatsword 2!”), and because you’d have to be very careful you didn’t simply create “better” setups or completely invalidate existing moves – I mean, if you add a DPS move where there was a buffing or CC one before, you may suddenly make a weapon vastly more effective in most situations, which could be pretty difficult to handle.

So not impossible, but they’d need to be really careful.

Personally I think there are so many new weapons they could introduce that that I hope they go that way rather than just replacement abilities or new weapon combos (though the latter could be fun).

For example:

Greataxe – Even ArenaNet have mentioned this as a possibility.

Scythe – If Dervishes aren’t coming back, and ArenaNet has basically said “Don’t ever expect new classes”, so I think they aren’t, this could be awesome be a lot of classes.

Javelin – Spear is already in as an underwater melee weapon, but the ol’ javelin could be back (as Paragons were made into Warriors and Guardians), and again, could work for a lot of classes, as a one-handed, usually-ranged weapon which interacted with boons/conditions at lot.

Flail – Distinct from Mace, with different animations, but probably on many of the same classes – perhaps a focus on negating defenses?

Crossbow – Suitable for different classes to guns, and perhaps offering a more slow-firing, heavy-damage kind of ranged.

Brass Knuckles/Clawed Gloves etc. – Surprisingly common historically – could also include Punch-Daggers (aka Katars).

You could also get really fancy with double-weapons (silly as they can be), whips/chains (hard to animate, but potentially cool), boomerangs, polearms and the like, all of which might be a little complex.

Definitely need to get the spears back into the game for out-of-water use. I always thought the way spears looked on Monks/Warriors running around was pretty cool looking in GW1.

As far as whips go; there’s either a Bandit or a Nightmare Sylvari type of enemy that uses one. Which one, I don’t remember. I’m pretty sure they’re in Caelodon ( spelling on that darn place ). Think it’d work great ( and look! ) with a Mesmer using Profane armor.

A tank, from traditional MMO terminology, is someone who grabs aggro and holds it. calling someone a tank that mitigates a parties damage, but doesn’t get attacked or aggro would probably throw a whole lot of people off.

A “tank” is the character whose primary role is to keep the enemy from dealing (its full) damage to the party, whether it be by aggro control (the most common form, usually in the form of a character who stands there taunting and absorbing damage), throwing up barriers to protect the players (eg, Defenders with the Force Fields power set in City of Heroes; man, I miss that game), debuffing the enemy so that it misses often or does drastically reduced damage, and so on.

Language, terminology, and jargon evolves over time.

Pshhhhhhhh. Our tanks in GW1 were kittening Assassins.

OH, I’m glad I’m not the only person that hated the city. One way ticket to motion sickness, that place. Bleh.

omg you got motion sickness in the city too? i’m glad im not crazy…..

Yeah I did too, I could only ever do Kaineng with heroes as I had to stop from time to time

But the city was based on a real place in China (someone else can google it) which has now been pulled down, but according to the lore we’ve already read, the current Emperor is an isolationist that conquered and disbanded the Luxons and Kurzicks…
However we could easily be begged to help in Cantha as there’s bound to be a dragon there and Kuunavang, like Glint needs our help (like Glint died helping Destiny’s Edge)

From what I remember, it was based on Kowloon, Hong Kong. It hasn’t been torn down, as the area it was supposedly designed after, is more of a poor-mans area. Unless it’s changed in the last 3 years at least, as that was my last port visit there.

This response really upsets me. In both a mad and sad kind of way. Getting to the higher ranks were suppose to take time. Just like in Guild Wars, the sweet emotes took a lot of time to get. It took years for people to max their PvP titles, with countless hours and matches.

Scenario based maps for sPVP

Copestetic.5174

I think it would be awesome if there were scenario based maps and game modes.

For instance an escort type game mode/map where you escort King Adelburn to cast the foefire. The defending team has to escort King Adelburn while the attacking team has to kill Adelburn to win.

I think this would be insanely fun and could open to sPVP up to a lot more players, this also solves the problem of everyone rolling Asuras. You could standardise the models.

Not only would these types of maps be fun but they would deliver lore and be fun to watch.

There are numerous scenarios that could be added.

Thoughts?

Can’t get more standardized than Charr ( assaulting ) vs Human ( Defenders ).

I think TDM sounds like a good idea when you think about it loosely. The problem is that every TDM type game would come down to first team to get someone stomped wins 90% of the time. People just want a fun gamemode that doesn’t involve conquest, and TDM is the first to come to mind because it works well in other games like CoD.

Just because someone goes down, doesn’t mean the match is over. Warrior, Necro, and Mesmer can pick multiple people up instantly. I don’t play the other classes, but these three can insta-rez. Getting spiked-down should be anticipated at the start of the match, and should be ready to be dealt with by one of those classes.

Just remember: higher hp doesn’t necessarily = more challenging content

I agree. Unfortunately damage and defense scaling reaches a point where it no longer conveys a sense of progression and challenge. For example, once creatures start one-shotting every player, it doesn’t matter how much extra damage they do. We’re also looking into how to meaningfully extend the scalability of FOTM.

More attacks, less damage instead of 3 skills that are 1-hit KO’s?

I’d like to see a bit more emphasis brought back on interrupts. Give “tougher” enemies skills that reduce damage or heal, but with a window of opportunity for interrupts. This then requires players to properly observe the boss’s actions, and keep a skill in reserve for when they start to pull out their healing. (Anybody remember Glint’s Crystal Hibernation skill from GW1? Imagine giving a boss like Tequatl that skill where if he’s not interrupted, all attacks against him will HEAL instead of harming him, causing the zerg to basically undo all the damage they just did for the last 5 mins if they don’t pay attention.)

That would be awesome, and insanely funny at the same time.

It might be interesting to see how many people with linked GW1 accounts don’t make charr characters vs how many people with just a GW2 account don’t make charr characters. I suspect they’d be the same simply because charr armour is consistently embarrassing, even the racial armour has clipping issues..

I don’t think that’d be a very good way of measurement. For instance, I gave my GW1 account away in July of last year to some random guy ( or girl, no clue ) in Pre-Searing, as I had no intention on playing GW2 at the time, or any other MMO again. But since I’m heading back overseas for a few more years, I got the game so me and my rl friends had something to do together while I was away again.

Not even Dragons seem to have the power to prevent Ghosts from haunting an area where their traumatic deaths may have occurred. …this seems to tie in with the Mists and ‘the Rift’ itself. There’s a chance we might get more answers on it if the Thaumaneuva Reactor actually gets some rich back story to it, but I wouldn’t hold your your breath on that. The Living Story team seems more interested in hawking cash shop items than selling us reasonable explanations and plot.

That’s a good point. Kind of makes you wonder what’s the Mursaat up to these days.

Only 3 Mursaat survived the onslaught of the War in Kryta, and it’s unlikely that they reproduce, since they aren’t sentient beings. Chances are they’ve all died off some way or another by now, or all 3 fled to the Isle of Janthir where they originally came from.

What? The Mursaat were/are sentient beings just like any other race. They were one of the original 5 races (alongside Forgotten, Jotun, and others) who fought off the Elder Dragons the last time they appeared. They filled the role of the Asura, as the most intelligent and magically-inclined of the races of their time.

Yeah, what he said threw me off too. I seriously doubt we wiped out all of the Mursaat. Besides, there’s White Mantle even now, in GW2. What’s White Mantle without some scheming Mursaat behind them? We’ll see them again.

In the case of ascalon, the ghosts aren’t all there because of traumatic deaths but because of the curse of the foefire. Basically the spirits are bound to the foefire caused by Kind Adelbern using the magic sword Magdear (twin of Sohothin that Rytlok now wields).

The foefire killed all the Charr attacking the city at the time, and cursed all the humans, forcing them to relive that day over and over. They don’t know they’re dead, as long as the foefire remains active they keep thinking they’re still defending their city against the invading Charr, and see every living being they encounter (regardless of race) as a Charr. Actually, in the novel Ghosts of Ascalon the main characters meet the ghost of someone that died right before the foefire, and remains because of unfinished business, and it’s completely different from the ones in the rest of ascalon, and more like some of the spirits you meet in GW1, he’s aware that he’s dead and sees the living as what they are and is able to talk to them.

According to the story, the ghosts of ascalon won’t be laid to rest until the true heir to the throne of ascalon returns wielding either sohothin or magdear.

As a side note… wouldn’t be kinda interesting if Rytlock turns out to be the true heir to the throne, being that ascalon belonged to Charr before it did to the Humans?..

But wouldn’t either Jenna or Samuelsson fit the bill as an heir? If not, why bother mentioning them in the first place? If they were, why isn’t that something they’re actively trying to get done? At least to try?

Oopsies, that’s right. Still, a nasty Charr shouldn’t have a sword like that.

Edit: I’d like to know how he got that sword in the first place. The last time we see it in GW1 was during Hell’s Precipice, the last Mission for Prophecies in GW1 on the Ring of Fire Island chain. Did the PC’s snag it? Glint magically teleported it or something? Otherwise, it should of been destroyed ( I can assume that’s what would happen ) when the volcano erupted. I don’t know if anyone was offended by Cantha in GW1 so why would anyone be offended by it in GW2?

But there were people offended by Cantha in GW1. That was/is the issue. There was a quote either in this thread, or on Guru saying that Korea wasn’t too pleased with the merging of the cultures of Japan, S.Korea, and China.

If we get to go back to Cantha, they’re going to have to stick with one culture, and the safest bet would be Chinese.

Playing a Charr is out of the question for me. I got human, Norn and Sylvari characters, and as an old GW1 player i just feel uncomfortable with the Charr. Been fighting them for too long i guess. Not that i can’t distinguish between GW1 and 2 Charr, but basically they are still the same, despite having been given some depth of culture.

My first impression of GW2 Charr came from reading GoA and seeing Rytlock Brimstone state things like “A Charr is worth more than ten humans”. Oh, i know there are other examples, notably Tybalt and Almorra Soulkeeper, and i even chose Order of Whispers for my first and main character, but i do not want to play one of them and have to bear with Rytlock as my “mentor”. Logan is bad enough already.

There’s another thing that really sets me off within the first five minutes of gameplay as a new Charr. When you’re down in the tombs killing Duke Barradin, he says something like: " You lost this war long ago. You just don’t get it, do you? " or something along those lines. I can’t remember. It just ( believe it or not ) makes me kind of mad when he says that, and really reinforces the reason why I hate Charr. Not to mention, he’s wielding King Adelbern’s sword. I’m going to steal it…someday.

I have three Charr. Because GW1 was a long time ago.

A lot can change in 200+ years. Once in the murky depths of history, Canadians burned down the White House. But as a US Citizen, I do not let it interrupt my love of Ice Hockey and the films of the late Mr. John Candy. And even if GW2 was like two years after, or my humans all started in Ebonhawke instead of Kryta, I doubt I’d care. I play the Aliens and Predators gnawing on the Space Marines too. My favorite Soul Calibur character is Cervantes, and he was the homicidally insane zombie antagonist of the first two games. I made Bowser the cornerstone of my party in Super Mario RPG. If Resident Evil let me be a Zombie trying to bite Chris Redfield’s face off, you couldn’t stop me from shoveling money at Capcom.

tl;dr – Strange Brew & Vidya Games.

Resident Evil 6 came out last year. You can do that there. It’s in the bargin bin at Gamestop due to horrible reviews ( It really did suck. ) But none-the-less, you can do that if you can find someone online that’s actually playing it.

Endgame PvE: Difficulty comes down to dodging

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Copestetic.5174

Copestetic.5174

Adding to my last post, the vast majority of combat in PvE is essentially stacking, skill rotations, and dodging, and any mechanics past that they are simply side-objectives which are separate from that of the combat itself.

Take almost any PvE encounter, strip away these side mechanics, and all you have left is stack, rotations, and dodging. There are no complexities in enemy behavior and our skills serve no dynamic role in the combat.

PvP also has side mechanics, but the difference is that the combat itself is much more dynamic due to the behavior and abilities of the enemy. If you took away side mechanics from PvP, such as capture points, you’d still have a rich and dynamic combat experience, but the same can’t be said for PvE.

For instance:
- Take the gun away from the Ghost Eater and you have stacking, skill rotations, and dodging (SRD).
- Take away the crystals from the jade maw and you’re just dealing with trash mobs and agony.
- Take away the pillars from Bjarl the Rampager and you have SRD.
- Take away the lasers from the destroyer in CoE and you have SRD.
- Take away the rifles from the Evolved Husk and you have SRD.

Now I don’t mean to put down these side mechanics as they are a good part of the game, I’m just trying to point out that the combat mechanics themselves are underutilized and that without these side mechanics all you are left with is “stacking, skill rotations, and dodging”.

I haven’t put a ton of thought into a solution to this, but perhaps a good approach would be bridging the gap between players and monsters? Right now they just run right at you and only have a few key attacks, but what if they had more capabilities of players?

  • What if defiant was removed and they were given stun breaks?
    - What if they could dodge or use protection skills at key moments?
    - What if they had access to more skills?
    - What if they used skills based on how they players were acting, like using more AoE if stacking?*

I like this, personally.

Instead of Defiant, maybe give them an instant Stun Breaker after 1 Second of being Stunned. For KD/KB depending on the bosses size, it should or should not be possible. Assuming the boss human-ish, reduce the time like the auto-stun breaker. That way, you could interrupt skills. To prevent an endless stream of Stuns/KD/KB interrupting the boss, the Devs could throw in a mechanic that penalizes players that are stun heavy.

More Skills definitely needs to be introduced. That’s a given. I hope this is something ANet eventually plans to do.

A few skills that react to a given situation would be nice. I’m not sure how that’d be implemented at all, honestly as I’m not a programmer or whatever. But increasing the radius of AoE I suppose could be a start. A way I think is pretty cool, is a damage-based AoE that depends on how close/far the players are, similar to how “Fear Me!” works on a Warrior. It’s not damage, but depending on how close or far an enemy is, determines the duration of Fear. I’m not sure how hard it would be for the game to check to see how many players are stacked on top of him, but it’d be a nice little feature I think.

Reasons you did not choose a Charr

I love the Charr, all my characters are Charr. Very big fan of beast races.

For all those people claiming lore: Should not of taken their land. All of it was theirs and humans only got it with the help of their gods. Wimpy race got its butt kicked because their gods left them. Says something about survival of the fittest (Not survival of those who take advantage of ascended beings).

Charr got their butts kicked the first time around. Guess they shouldn’t have been too wimpy then!

(My post indirectly acknowledges that the humans won the first time because of their gods. Learn to critical think.)

No fun here. Everyone’s a kittening prick.

I greatly prefer playing humanoid characters.. so no beasts, funky coloured dark elves, dwarves or hobbits. So that’s why I went for a human first, then Norn.. and then the rest are mainly story APs and cultural armor APs. :P

I didn’t play GW1 but I’ve started reading Ghosts of Ascalon and it’s enlightened me to what the Charr were like. This:

In GW we seen them destroy the human kingdom and kill woman, children and elderly. Gwen’s story showed us they had human torture camps. They helped resurrect the titans that could have ended all intelligent life. They held humans for nearly a decade kept barely alive in small cages. They performed ritualistic human sacrifices.

They were bad guys. All of them. Then Pyre comes along and says “uhh yeah, our bad.” And we are just supposed to say “nah bro it’s cool”?

… this is why I have a hard time playing the charr I have just to get the story APs. It’s incredibly hard to see him as any type of hero.

Thing is… those things were done 250 years ago, so basically people are saying that it’s bad to blame humans from taking away charr lands because it was generations ago, and yet people are reacting bad to Charr from this generation for things that others of the same race did 250 years ago (and that the legion responsible for all that is currently at war against the rest of the Charr). As far as I know there are no signs in game that recent human prisoners during the war were misstreated or tortured, which should be everywhere in charr lands considering that the armistice started just 1 year before the game started, and that there were areas (Lion’s Arch, for example) where humans and charr already coexisted peacefully for years by then.

Plus, Humans weren’t entirely goody heroes back then either, considering that there were warriors that skinned charr and wore their skins as armor.

It may be 250 years ago in-game lore, but it was only last June for me, that I was still fightin’ the good fight against them. I think people are not really letting the gravity of the Human situation sink in here; and that’s darn-near extinction. The main reason is or is related in some way, to the Charr.

My number one reason is…

Because after all the crap your character/Humans go through in GW1, how could I ever be happy playing as something that single-handedly decimated the Human race? Plus I had ( and still have ) an odd fascination with killing them over and over and over again. Even here in GW2.

Ask Jaw Smokeskin, Blaze Bloodbane, Ghast Ashy-poo, and ole’ Red Eye. They hated me, and I them.

Those are some of the better reasons to play a charr. You’re aware that the humans took the land from the charr in the first place right?

I’d be a pretty kitten -poor GW player if I didn’t know the basics behind the lore. lol Yes, I’m aware of it. Regardless, in GW1 Charr are portrayed as very evil and cruel beings. It was pretty easy to side with the Humans, regardless of them beating them out of Ascalon taking their lands. I suppose it’s the human-side of me that sympathizes with the humans in-game more than Charr.

Plus, I enjoyed ( again, still do ) listening to them die while laughing as their pathetic attacks did nothing to me at their alter in Pre-Searing! Except Chaots…they could strip enchantments.
