Use F1 ability (forgot its name) from my medkit and then right after use my Magnetic Inversion Shield ability to create a blast finisher for a small splash.

Another is when I get the Mesmer thingy from the Elixer U toolbelt throw I also use my shield for a blast finisher to give out Chaos Armor.

Basically I use my blast finisher from my shield whenever I can, sometimes also from my med turret, though I mostly blow it up right after I deploy it.

Did path 1 and after 1 wipe on The Howling King we managed quite easily. We were 4 guildies that play actively together and 1 pug however so it makes sense that we struggle less, but I must say that overall the mechanics were a lot more fun. We are a bunch (I was on an alt then, but okay) of Exotic equipped 80s so of course that coupled with the fact that we do dungeons quite often will result in us not struggling as much. Doesn’t take away the fact that encounters still will be fun!

I am all for a ‘hardmode’ for level 80’s as this is a 35+ dungeon it shouldn’t be too hard, low level pugs should be able to do it. A hardmode function would make everyone happy I guess.

I did fine while I leveled. I used turrets though, they act like little tanks here and there. If used well they can be awesome to level with! Engineer is less forgiving than for example the Warrior, but it makes it even more worthwhile to play one!

It’s a difficult class to master, but I love it! Still is my favorite even though I level plenty of alts. The versatility is awesome, but might be hard for a lot of people to get into. Quite frankly some people really don’t know how to play one, that’s fine, I don’t know how to play a Thief well either for instance, and therefore they complain the engi sucks. It’s awesome!

What exactly does everyone have a problem with regarding the pet AI?

Search the forums. Not trying to be rude. It’s just that there’s so many posts and threads at this point, a simple search would provide a better answer than I could probably ever give you.

That said, the simple answer is pet AI is all kinds of dumb. That, in and of itself, isn’t a bad thing, but the fact of the matter is rangers are very reliant on pets. That is their mechanic. That’s what separates them from every other class. So, when you can’t control every aspect of the pet, one would hope the AI would be good enough that it shouldn’t be a problem.

Well…the AI isn’t good enough so it is a problem. A very, very big problem.

What more do you want to control about them then? I control them well in PvE. Whenever I notice an AoE of some sorts I get my pet to come to me and position him somewhere else. I use ranged pets though in PvE. I played Hunter for YEARS in WoW, back in the vanilla days especially, there was a huge focus on controlling your pet there as well and I think I simply control it more than others do/should. I haven’t come across anything yet as the AI switches when you do (something the turrets of my engineer don’t for instance).

Right now we run Engineer (moi), Thief, Elementalist, Ranger and a Guardian. However for SM or lower level exp. we switch to adds or get lower level members in. We used to have 2 warriors, but one switched servers and the other switched to his Thief.

Why exactly do you ‘have to’ raid? Where does it say it ‘has to’ take hours. Nowhere. This is a misconception made by many. If you don’t want to, don’t, want to do it once a week whenever you feel like it? Pugging can work, plenty of solutions help with making that viable as well. This game has already broken so many stereotypes, why not raiding too? IF they were to implement raiding, and I think Guild Missions is a step in that direction (well see how that plays out), why do they have to do it the traditional way? Oh right. They don’t.

I don’t like raids because it feels like my efforts don’t contribute to anything… When I play in 5 man groups for instance I know my efforts are important and if I muck up it means my group suffers.

Same applies to 10 man raiding. I raided 10 man a lot in WoW and especially on heroic you needed everyone to be on top of their game. In 25 man that was less the case, but even still on heroic mode everyone had to focus and bring their a-game. Invalid argument.

raid dropped gear could have unique armor/weapon skins, crafting recipes, etc.

That’s pretty precisely why I don’t want to see raids in this game, EVER.

I don’t like raiding, main reason for that being that this content cannot be reasonably played with PUGs anymore, at least not in any game I have seen before (heck, it’s hard to find 5 people for a dungeon already!). And no, I don’t want to join a raiding guild, so let’s not go there.

But I DO love crafting. And collecting armour skins. Now guess how much I’d love it if suddenly the best crafting recipes and the nicest armour skins would be out of my reach! I loved it so much that I actually unsubscribed several MMOs just because of that – I don’t want to be a second-rate player anymore just because I don’t raid. And raiders are never happy unless they get the best of everything. Best gear. Best skins. Best materials. Best recipes. Best mounts. Best anything. For the rest of us.. what is there left, exactly?

I love Guild Wars 2 among things because it doesn’t have raids.

Raidfinder. Problem solved. Look at WoW for that. Difficulty is lower and pugs, heck even before it was there, was easily doable.

As MANY people said before and it’s Anets philosophy is that nothing is mandatory so why would you even think that the ‘best’ gear is available there?

More unique skins are something that should be added, through raids or not. You can get the skin in raids if you want to. Don’t want to? Deal with it. Do you hear people complaining about the skins that are only available to a certain dungeon? No. Everything is within reach if you actually do something to get it. It’s called a reward.

Damage has never been an issue with any class or anything, only in fractals, which I barely do. Most of the time if you can survive long enough everything is fine in the end. If you wanna do speed runs it’s a different story, but that is not the case here.

And your attitude is exactly what’s wrong with some people in the community. Elitist behavior. Ridiculous. “Just saying.”

Well i’ll try with a 10/10/30/0/20 build: with forcefull explosives, riffled barrels, energized armor, power shoes, elixir-infused bombs, static discharge and speedy kits. For gear i think i will go to Carrion gear to start. But Cleric sounds nice too…. still need to test some more. I’m running with two pistols atm. I allready lvled most off my time with bombs and like you said Direksone, the healing on the bombs is great. I think if you gear up with more healing you’ll be pretty hard to kill, no?
Oh RF=radiation field :-)

A really good bunkerbuild for PvP uses the healing bombs extensively! You won’t kill anyone, but you would be excellent at area denial and staying alive.

The AI is a bit stupid sometimes, that’s true. In dungeons sometimes they were firing through a wall or something because there was a mob behind it or they started firing without I wanted them to. However if you place them far away (I only used Rocket and Rifle, sometimes a 3rd), especially out of reach on high places (obv. you can’t always do that), they should do fine. In PvP a full on turret build is not effective no. 1 or 2 Turrets is all you can do.

Also for Bomb kit get the trait that makes every explosion heal (its the 30 pt one) that works like a charm. I have increased range and reduced CD as 2 traits in Firepower for my pistol and Elixer gun.

I am a support engineer as well, but I focus around Elixers and the Elixer Gun. I use the Cleric gear. Works fine for me. Decent heals and decent damage as well.

True, but then again you need to put traits into anything for it to work effectively in my experience. Turrets need a slight, slight buff, but overall I do think they work fine.

I think the only toolbelt skill that’s very weak is the Rifle Turret one.

All this shows that Turrets work fine! Maybe need a slight boost, but people just don’t know how to play with them. Like Rangers complaining about their pets, it’s one of your core mechanics (not really the case with turrets as is with pets, but still) and, quite harshly put: learn to play with it.

I leveled with turrets and loved it. They can tank pretty well and in conjunction with pistol/shield I could also make sure they stayed away from my turrets so they would live longer. Traiting into turrets to make them more durable is worthwhile for simple mobs, in dungeons and the like it is obsolete, UNLESS you place them well out of reach and such. Each turret calls for a different scenario and they all work great if you ask me. Weak: yes, but not terribly so. Eventhough I now focus on Elixers and the Elixer Gun some turrets are still worthwhile to take here and there!

Well in that case the Elixer Gun helps with removal: Fumigate and Super Elixer allow for that. Elixer F also gives swiftness.

Giving boons: the Runes of Altruism do that, apparently they work very well with the medkit as that has a lower CD I think than the medkit. I have not used it yet so I’d have to test myself how exactly it works. Throwing elixers like Elixer C removes conditions, but there’s also a trait that allows every elixer to do this and throwing elixer B for instance can give a random boon. You can also use Elixer H as your heal and throw that for boons. So I think you’ll have to trait quite some points in Elixer at least.

What weapons do you use? And is there a special weapon kit or something you really wanna implement in your build? We can always speculate and experiment! I think in general you will want to go deep into Elixers and perhaps medkit, but tell me first what you want!

No I will not use the bomb kit in PvE, or at least I do not see myself doing so. I might do it for PvP bunker build, but I prefer staying back chillin. I might give it a go though, never hurts to try of course! If I would it would probably be EG that I swap for the Bombkit, I love having access to 2 elixers.

I think I’ll do Sigil of Life at least on my shield and then maybe later on Sigil of Battle or the Endurance one on my shield when I put Sigil of Life on pistol.

I use Healing Turret as a supporty engineer. I don’t wanna run around laying down medkits, that’s what my supply drop is for and eventhough I am traited 20 into Elixers I do not use it because it is a bit too selfish. I do PvE and mostly dungeons so I try to buff and heal my group as much as possible.

Hello, hello!

I too play a supporty engineer, but still pack a punch damage wise (or I atleast like to think I do). My build will be posted here, for some reason I can’t copy and paste the link so I will when I get home.

It’s basically 0/20/30/20/0. This is a specc based on preference as I use Pistol+Shield and like to use Elixers (I feel they can support quite well as well, but sometimes you can be a bit selfish and power up your own damage!).

Elaboration:

Firepower:
Hair Trigger and Rifled Barrels are chosen in Firepower because I switch between pistol/shield and EG quite often. I want to have a nice amount of range so I don’t have to, unless I want to, get into the fight. Also the reduced CD seems obvious to me.

Inventions:
Energized Armor: I have Toughness in my gear so extra power is a good thing to me so I still pack a punch and I don’t ‘just’ support.

Elite Supplies: obvious to me as well, it’s my elite and more supplies is only better!

Reinforced Shield: I use one so it seems obvious to me as well, increased toughness for more durability and that also results in more Power (Energized Armor).

Alchemy:
Fast Acting Elixers: Again, I use Elixers so it’s a no brainer really.

Potent Elixers: Increases duration, again, no brainer to me. (Elixer B & U I use very often so it really enhances my damage.

Gear: all my gear is Cleric, Toughness+Power+Healing. I support, want to be beefy, but still pack a punch. Bam. My runes are the new ones: Altruism. Very awesome. On every heal (Healing Turret) I give Fury & Might to everyone. I do not have any good jewelry yet, but that will also be Cleric.

Sigils: I use Rage right now on my MH, because I like the quickness now and again, but I am still checking what I want to use myself here either. Sigil for Life might also be a possibility, but there’s more that’s viable.

What I do throughout encounters is actively switch between Elixer Gun and Pistol Shield, depending on what is needed, but mostly once I use all my CD’s on my pistol/shield I switch to EG and vice versa.

Combofields:

Make sure you make use of these! Another reason to use shield to me is the blast finisher which in conjuction with Regenerating Mist heals for a small amount that’s always welcome. The Healing Turret also has a Blast Finisher and sometimes (it doesn’t always work) when I explode it it also gives a heal.

Do you have anything you would like to use in your own build? Perhaps I can help you with creating one to your own needs and preferences and also I can answer any questions. (I feel like writing a guide when I post stuff like this :p).

Engineer is doing fine if you ask me. Yes the autoattack is a bit slow, but it explodes on combat, with a trait penetrates so you can do hefty damage with 1 shot. I use the Elixer Gun also which fires way faster so I have no problem with it at all. I do fine in PvE and PvP.

What sigil should I use?

Hi everyone,

I am a supporty engineer that focusses on PvE. For those interested my specc will be linked in here as well. I try to lay down heals and boons for those around me, while trying not to compromise on my offensive capabilities, hence the Cleric gear. I use Runes of Altruism (love these!, but the trait calculator doesnt have them yet). I also don’t have any proper jewelry equipped, but Cleric seems obvious here.

The Elixers in my build are the 2 slots that I switch out depending on what the situation calls for, mostly elixers, but sometimes even a net turret might come in.

My question is: what sigils should I use? Sigil of Water seems obvious, but I only have 20% crit, is it worth my while? I already have Sigil of Rage in my MH and I quite like it, I also use Elixer U quite a lot: I dig the quickness. Sigil of Rage will probably stay in unless I am convinced otherwise. Other ones I had in my mind were Sigil of Energy or perhaps a combination of Water and Intelligence.

I would simply like to hear what you use or would suggest for me. Thanks!

Call me crazy, but I like the random elixer effects. Suits the class fluff wise and makes it fun. Sometimes I’ll be super happy cause I get a Wall of Reflection when I need it, another time I might not get what I want and I have to work a little harder. I also use Elixer Gun and I’m fine with the way it is. I play a supporty engineer in PvE and it does its job well.

What profession you feel can carry a party?

I might be vain, but I more than often see myself carrying a party and I am an engineer. A supporty one with Cleric Exotics (healing, toughness and power). I deal decent damage, but am very sturdy (not only because of my gear) and support everyone with heals and buffs (yeej for the new Altruistic Runes or whatever theyre called). Mostly when we have a warrior (i almost only do dungeons with guildies) with us they manage to tank extremely well and because of that the rest of us has it a lot easier. Yesterday our only melee was a thief and I found myself tanking quite often.

I more than often am the sole survivor at an encounter, reviving people, killing the boss whatever and I can safely say that I can and sometimes do carry a party. Our elementalist is also very capable of doing so.

Other classes: proper Guardians with their buffs and sturdyness (a tanky Warrior does the same) and that’s about it imo. Thieves are in general too squishy and the rest of the classes are more than welcome to have in your party but don’t carry it by any means I’ve found (Mesmers being a good example of this).

All in all it really matters on the player, which is something I love about this game, not the class. Yes, yes, there are some balancing issues, whine whine, but it is a lot more skillbased than most games.

I think that would result in a LOT of dolls though, that wouldn’t be very original. Engineer has a lot of kits, but each kit is way different than the next, dolls are not.

I think Rituals would work better as Utilities, markers could be places in weapon skills instead, also a different name would be better, the name is too similar to the Necromancer.

I am not sure about the Soul Orbs. With that amount active you are very overpowered in PvP.

The profession has changed so much from the original idea that it is becoming more and more complex and me becoming more skeptical.

Thinking about a lot of changes actually, maybe putting rituals in the utility slots for instance. Also shouts maybe as utility slots, but that is mere speculation at this point. Hopefully I’ll have something done tomorrow. I’m pretty critical at myself:p

I am thinking long and hard about some changes to the weapons as they are now! I’ll be posting them soon! I think Rituals should be 1/weapon and tied to offhands. Mainhand all about damage for the most part: OH for some supportyness. That’s my opinon though. 2 rituals seems too powerful, there’s also no way in hell you can constantly get enough soul jars up to sacrifice to make use of them.

About that: sacrificing them when using for a ritual, does that return health to you? When I think of it: sacrificing health into them, having 4 up, results in 60% health: BIG, big chance of getting 1 shotted, especially in dungeons. This should be improved imo.

Ah he took the mace out. I meant the Healing doll taking the healing slot. I guess 3x 2.5k heal would be good, the F1 skill on the Spiritualist is way different than the Engineer also, so there would be no heal there, though you would have to switch into the doll to be able to heal and you dont have a heal ready, like the medkit does. Hmm..

What about adding a grave marker that entangles foes that walk through it? Spirit hands grabbing foes.

The Death Mask description is a bit odd, as sigils work right now: Passive effect is for instance get healed every x sec. On Activate: get an instant heal, passive effect goes on cooldown. Is that what you mean by that description? Seems a bit odd as it is right now. Also I think you could make them a little tastier by adding some class things in there, for instance activating the Thief mask puts you in stealth for 3? sec.

Making a blog or something similar is a great idea indeed! I do think though that the healing doll should be a healing utility though. As a normal one+having your standard heal, that’d be very overpowering! Perhaps one of the heals could heal the closest allie? If theres non heals yourself. They should balance well with the CD, requiring cast and being immune to damage seems pretty overpowered, plus you won’t be as mobile so in dungeons I can see it posing a problem.

Weapons restrictions: no and yea I do think 1 per each and N3 would be the best and then it indeed depends on what weapon combination you do. Mace+shield=Spirits Dessent for instance, but Mace+Torch would do something a little more offensive: damge+dot for instance.

What keeps me in is playing with my guildies. We all had a break for 2-3 weeks from the game and now were playing again: leveling alts, hunting dragons, dungeons. It’s all fine as long as you have people to play with imo.
