Just salvaged an Apostate’s Gunnarsong longbow and got… absolutely nothing. No mats, no runes, no love. Is that right? Not sure I’ve ever had a blank salvage result before.

Hoarding is the wrong word for what most players do.
Most players just deposit mats at every opportunity and don’t pay any more attention to them unless they want to craft something or unless they overflow the storage. I fall into that category. I only sell stuff if I feel I need the gold. If you have max storage then that means you can have up to 2000 of each item out of sight and out of mind. It’s more “ignoring” than “hoarding”.

Having said that, I really don’t have a problem with players who want to play the markets. If they want to speculate on future prices then good luck to them. It’s their game too and it’s not like this is a difficult game to earn gold in.

And, um, none of it is real.

My guess would be that the price will increase a little in the build up, jump to a peak in the first few days of the event as impatient players splash gold to get stuff quickly, then the price will gradually drop as the event goes on.
It is only a guess though.

I decided to bite the bullet and make a serious attempt at it last night. In general I don’t like using “spoiler” videos but I knew I would have no choice with this one. So with the help of Dulfy I got to the start of the JP after a few attempts. I fairly quickly got to the second waypoint (I’m counting the first one as the one where you first reach the large lava “room”). And that was it. After 10 minutes I was down to my underwear, having already died countless times. After about an hour I was still there. I felt to have got a reasonable way into the puzzle but not far enough to reach the next waypoint so I just kept dying and dying and dying.

I’m a Norn and some of the camera angles were dreadful so I sometimes just fell off ledges. Other times there seemed to be a slight lag in the glider deploying which meant I was immediately too low to make the glide. So whilst I would really like that mastery point I suspect it is one that will remain out of reach for me unless I happen upon a very patient mesmer or two.

I felt to be mostly undone by the clunky controls and cameras rather than by the puzzle difficulty itself. Turns out some of us cannot “easily jump everything”…

On a brighter note at least I unlocked that last map point so I can complete the map now.

I think it’s an excellent opportunity for them to nerf everything on those HoT maps, get rid of the adventures and move all the mastery points to just next to the way points. That might just about tempt me back onto those awful maps, at least until I get all those precious mastery points ;p

Those maps were never popular. Plenty of players went there but that does not mean that they liked them.

I did quite a bit of multi-looting before LS3 launched and I had one very entertaining experience where I joined a squad to find the comm declaring that he was the most unforgiving kitten ever and that we should expect to be kicked without warning and with no reasons given and then listing more rules than usual. He was so OTT it was proper funny so I stuck around.

The thing is, he was true to his word. Players were kicked all over the place and the comm was constantly ranting in chat about stuff. It sounds odd but I thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of not getting kicked. The loot was OK rather than spectacular but the backdrop of a constantly cycling squad was just funny. I eventually got kicked a with a couple of minutes left but I was strangely satisfied.

It’s a reminder that we shouldn’t take it too seriously.

This Game Is Too Easy

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: DoctorDing.5890

DoctorDing.5890

Open world has to stay relatively easy, because if getting around is a chore many folks will not enjoy the game as much. That’s the problem with HoT – restricted pathways with mobs you can’t avoid and/or run through. Bloodstone Fen was better received because you can get around more easily and pick your fights when you want.

What puzzles me is why they have not yet introduced a hard mode for instanced content – same mobs but harder hitting and more damage resistant, increase the loot, add a few achievements etc. That would not be a huge amount of development and would go some way to satisfy those who want more challenge.

The risk of making the game as a whole more difficult is that you lose more players than you gain.

Why Gw2 is drifting away from me.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: DoctorDing.5890

DoctorDing.5890

In the early years of Gw2 I have never had more fun with a game. I would come home from school everyday and play until I went to bed, rinse and repeat. However when people wonder why Gw2 is maybe not doing the best it can be its for a few reasons, stupid reasons in fact. #1 WvW server merges: I have had at least 50 people from my server who have called it quits after the server merges. It totally defeats the purpose of one server working together and eliminates what that server did as one. For example, my server would do “Theme nights” and reset parties at north camp before the WvW matchup reset. All of that stuff is eliminated when you have 2 other servers with you. Server merges completely destroyed my super friendly, super close server community. #2 Condi Metas: This is all about PvP and a little of WvW roaming. Basically Anet requires you, for PvP to either run the cheese condi builds and completely destroy anyone you want, since condis have been way over buffed in the past years, or your build better kitten well be able to cure condis like no other. This is why PvP is growing less popular, I think, every day. There’s no thrill of winning a 1v1 fight if all you do is stand there and spam some condis and call it a day, take us back to the good ol’ days when we had to make builds from scratch not just jump on the condi bandwagon since they’re godly overpowered or just go to Metabattle and get a build that will make you seem like you know what your doing. #3 Buffing then Nerfing (MOST IMPORTANT): I never was able to understand why Anet (not trying to rip on anet I love them) can’t simply make all classes even. Every big nerf patch a few classes get nerfed, and rightly so (I’m looking at you Dragonhunters and Engis) but for some reason they feel the need to buff the HELL out of other classes. So since I’ve been playing since the November after launch I dont believe I’ve ever witnessed all classes being equal. There is always 3,4, or even 5 classes ridiculously set above the rest. Like engi, I mained a engi for the longest time rocking my awesome rifle build (I’m still salty anet about removing Synaptic Overload) back when engi was believe it or not, hard to play! Well thats my rant, I feel some of the skill and knowledge of our classes and the game are fading since new players can throw together this overpowered condi build from Metabattle and destroy everyone. I could be wrong, give me some feedback and long live Gw2 (with changes)

Ah, if only our keyboards had, say, an ENTER key. Imagine how much better life would be.

It may be frustrating when someone undercuts you by a coin, but that’s basic economics and it exists in games the same way it does in the real world (just watch how eBay works to see the same thing play out).

But I agree that it’s annoying

Certainly the market needs better controls to prevent manipulation by players.

No it doesn’t. It ain’t broke. You have the choice of buying/selling instantly or trying to improve the price by being patient. As stated by several people above, almost everything sells if the price is in the normal range. My stuff all sells within a day, the only exceptions being new items that have yet to find their price level.

Anet can we please have a test server?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: DoctorDing.5890

DoctorDing.5890

I’ve been in a game with a test server and it was not very successful.

First off, the devs never allowed enough time to fix any problems that turned up so there was a perpetually unhappy bunch of players who would report bugs and then see them go live anyway.

Second, many players used the test server as a means to gain an advantage, either through trading or new exploits. The prices of some materials in the live game would dramatically rise or fall in anticipation of the changes on the test server.

Third, as stated, many players were not even remotely interested in testing stuff – they were just impatient for the new stuff so by the time it hit live they were already bored of it and spoilers and trolls were widespread.

Finally, and this is the main point, plenty of major bugs still got through, because nothing tests the code as effectively as a million players all trying to do something in slightly different ways.

Am I missing something in the HoT zones?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: DoctorDing.5890

DoctorDing.5890

Starting HoT now is slightly unfortunate timing because many players will have moved on to the new Bloodstone Fen map and are also pursuing the crazed creatures events all over the place. You can do some HoT stuff solo but most of the events and metas require a decent number of players so you need to make use of other lfg tool and also be aware of the fixed times of events for each map. If the meta is under way you may struggle to get anyone to help with other stuff on the map like HPs. Chances are that the map you are on has a reasonable population but most of them will be at a specific event so you need to learn those events and figure out when the non-meta “window” is on each map.

Fixed timers, big metas and legendary bosses that take an age to kill don’t make for a very fun experience for me. It doesn’t even matter if you die-rez-die-rez, just batter away….

GW2 Sales 2Q16: a new All Time Low

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: DoctorDing.5890

DoctorDing.5890

With HoT they just set the difficulty level too high for the average player. GW1 and GW2 have always been casual games with vast amounts of quite easy content. HoT upset that balance, which pleased some folks but not others. For me, it’s not fun so I mostly don’t go there. For my wife, well she stopped playing at the very start of the HoT story line. That bit where you have to earn gliding to proceed but it’s hard to earn XP because you can’t kill much and you can’t follow the gliding, bouncing zergfest. So I can state as a fact that HoT caused a massive 50% of players in our household to stop playing.

The April update and LS3 improved things considerably but, guess what, it’s too late to get back many of those players that left. And that is bound to hit the profits.

The lag since the last patch is terrible.

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: DoctorDing.5890

DoctorDing.5890

I’ve not noticed any extra lag but I do now see a very very slow initial rendering of places which is something I have not seen before in this game. It’s particularly bad in the main cities. I’m not talking a bit of flicker. When I portal to Hoelbrak my toon stands in mid-air for one second then it takes probably 5 or 6 seconds for the environment to get fully drawn. Once it is done there are no further problems or lag. It’s so slow that I can portal in and run to and enter my home instance before more than a pot plant or two have appeared (it takes a bit of practice to avoid the invisible walls!)

So something definitely changed around the time of LS3.

Actually gold sellers in most games continue to exist precisely because they do deliver what they promise. I’m not even sure they are breaking any laws although they are certainly breaking the terms of use of the game as are the players who buy from them. Both buyer and seller deserve to be perma-banned.

But I still don’t understand why Anet have not bothered to implement even the simplest of chat filters. Make the bad guys work a bit harder for their money.

Of course, gambling can be enjoyable too and you can view the losses as an acceptable cost for that enjoyment. Everyone has a different threshold. I used to regularly play a slot machine in a local pub. Its payout was set at about 80% so the losses, on average, were fairly slow. Over the course of a couple of beers I’d chat to folk, feed the machine, win some, lose some and stop when I’d spent around the price of another couple of beers. It was entertainment. Not all gambling is bad, but I can see how someone could get carried away with it. The thing to remember is that folks only ever boast of the wins.

And don’t be too judgemental of someone who spends lots of RL $$$ on the GW2. Be happy that they are subsidising your game.

Gold selling out of hand again?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: DoctorDing.5890

DoctorDing.5890

This has happened with the gold selling spammers in Path of Exile. The amusing thing is that it has gotten to the point where the spammers’ messages are so obscure that you would have to spend a bit of time to decipher what it says.

That’s exactly the point I’ve been trying to make and something I’ve seen in other games.

Right now we get a neat, clear and blatant advert from the bad guys (I don’t even know how to format a message like that!). With not very much effort on a filter that message will evolve in to a messy stream of characters and TXT speak that requires some effort to decipher. A less clear message means fewer customers for them. And it would show us players that Anet are at least trying to stop it.

I’ve sometimes wondered whether a community-managed filter would work. Anyone can modify it and the changes get voted up or down. Players can opt-in or out of the filter.

I’ve also wondered why software can’t be batter at deciphering disguised urls and adverts. We have software that can understand natural speech, recognise faces, drive cars and beat a Go master yet it apparently can’t spot that “(dot)” or “\/\/\/\/\/\/” might be part of a URL. I reckon someone needs to offer a research prize for it…

Non Raiders blocked from XP bar spirit shards

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: DoctorDing.5890

DoctorDing.5890

The point of this thread is very valid. Players who have absolutely no interest in raids or raiding and who have absolutely no use for a raid mastery are being “encouraged” to do them just so they can have a use for excess XP again. It’s like asking a jazz-hating metal-head to buy a Robbie Coltrane album just to earn a Metallica bonus track.

The jazzers are saying “Hey, you might like it”, “Broaden your mind”, “You don’t know if you don’t try it” but the metal-head is thinking “But all I want is the bonus track”.
