it’s pretty clear you don’t even play thief. you’ve said some extremely ridiculous and sometimes conflicting things since you started this smurf account.

if you THINK thieves can easily crush other warriors, I can gladly show you otherwise. Thief is not really a good 1v1 class, it has plenty of weaknesses and warrior is one of them.

i don’t play engi, but did you actually think sanduskel would duel me? He has never shown us any kind of gameplay on his thief yet he makes all these outrageous claims like how amazing his thief is, how he crushes all warriors with ease, how he beat all classes with ease. he plays this imaginary thief build that is godlike and immune to nerfs, but it’s all in his head.

Every good guild I have been in recruits people, not classes. I understand you’re discussing class balance, and I agree that thieves have some issues right now, but just skip the elitist groups that only want to run whatever the FOTM is.

The flavor of the month changes. The people don’t.

Top GvG guilds recruit classes that are good to keep a good composition. Current meta favours certain compositions too much. Even if you get in with a mediocre class, you’ll have to sit out when they roll which is even worse.

Go back to your S/D Thief. You got those Warrior nerfs that you have been begging for, too bad you still won’t be good at S/D.

S/D thief is dead. I don’t even play S/D thief anymore btw.

The GS/LB war is my spec, and I’ve been using it before it’s even recognized. S/D thief is not a problem on this spec even now.

Anet mentioned implementing an item that can extract upgrades from items (i.e. sigils, runes, infusions). I assume it will come in this patch for this very reason.

GS/LB has:

-Melee and ranged, LB can be traited to 1500 range which is just insane
-Still can use healing signet, berserker stance, mobile strikes, cleansing ire, dogged march ie all the must haves
-Can trait inspiring banners if you want to bunker
-Easy mode cleansing ire with longbow F1 (in fact it’s impossible to not proc cleansing ire with this)
-Greatsword is 150 AoE cleave as opposed to say 130 AoE on anything that’s not a greatsword. A lot of people overlook this but this added range makes it really annoying for other melee to hit you but avoid your attacks at the same time, even though you can do precisely that.
-Greatsword is great for running away with whirlwind attack -> rush
-Hundred blades for insane cleave damage
-Pin down is still gonna be great

why not stream some gameplay and we can (hopefully) tell you what it is you’re lacking.

then again, I don’t really roam on my thief in WvW anymore because I don’t feel like my thief is that good of a roaming class anymore…I don’t necessarily see the fixation on roaming with a thief tbh.

Even in PvP people will tell you the thief is just there to decap becuz of the good mobility and it can’t even be expected to win all of its 1v1s.

I don’t want to roam on my thief unless I can win practically all of my 1v1s (i actually felt like so at one point and when I lost I felt like I got outplayed. Now if I lose I may not get the feeling of being outplayed anymore becuz the class isn’t in a good position), and right now I just don’t have this confidence so it’s a waste of time to me.

Actually, it costs no more computing power than simply rendering the models as they are. It’s all about what I explained earlier. I’m no programmer, but I can tell you that there’s no way to only render part of a single plane, which is what hair is made up of. I don’t know how you could program the system to do something which is impossible for a character artist to do without modeling hair specifically for each helm. Code can’t model for you.

well the only reason hair clips through is because there is no anti-collision physics. but anti-collision physics would be very expensive computationally due to there being so many hair strands. so in the future we’d be able to do it, but not now. practically all clipping issues can be solved by better physics but people want better textures, lighting, shading etc and don’t care as much for physics.

Hair is one or a series of joints painted into Havok Cloth which only reacts with constraints, movement and wind. Hair meshes aren’t “physics based”, and thusly you cannot expect to compress the meshes against the skull to appear at the underside of the helmet (I assume this is what you mean) and end up with less clipping issues than there already are.

i’m not in the gaming industry so i don’t really care to know what kind of optimizations they’re making so that hair simulations doesn’t bog down the whole game but it’s easy to see that if they have hair on a single cloth you will never be able to get realistic physics since you can’t separate the individuals hairs to go around the hat and/or back when the character model moves.

but yea, reading it over i get what you’re trying to say. there is no physics involved at all like i expected. I was really excited for tressfx when it was first announced but what I saw in game didn’t really impress me. It seemed like hair was still dangling over an invisible polygon… (but at least it didn’t clip with that object suggesting there is some sort of physics)

They still have a long way to go before they can perfect hair physics (if they can ever)

hair clipping on shoulders and/or clothes is one of my pet peeves so i tend to choose a hairstyle that has less chance of clipping or doesn’t clip at all. you can tell for example that long black hair will definately clip against the back when you run.

Don’t use the Tower content as a bench mark. It’s designed to be solo content. I soloed all 3 levels with a warrior. I find the guard builds are better when in a group. Not everyone plays them that way but the benefits of having a guard far out weigh using other classes when in a full party. I don’t think they are useless.

Uhhh warrior is extremely strong in pve

My point is, utilize a better comparison. Fractals for instance. High level fractals can be done by any class. Guards are still a viable class. Yes, warriors are strong in pve, they just suck in pvp and wvw. No balance.

The decap from engis come from running rifle. ANY engi can use that. No reason to be a bunker 2. (which btw isnt a bunker just tanky. They die 1v2 very quickly)

Heheh I know, but I keep trying to make it work because it’s a very fun, actively defensive playstyle. Someday I’ll convince a team to let me try it out in a teamqueue, but it hasn’t happened yet, so I just do bombs/nades there.

And apparently at least one person thinks its OP! Which is surprising since top players like yourself agree bunker engi isn’t viable.

The wiki says nothing about a quarter second stun. There’s a three-quarter second wind-up, half second stun, and a 1.25-1.5s evasion window.

well pistol whip has like 0.25s stun which can be lengthened to 0.5s.

More accurately, Pistol Whip has a 0.5s stun that can be extended to 0.65s with sigils.

The stun is going to be a little bit more useful after Dec 10th, when the aftercast on the first hit is reduced a bit. Eventually they are planning on splitting the skill into two parts, like they did with Larcenous Strike.

If thieves have stealth removed, they essentially become warriors, with 1/3 of the hp pool and 1/4 of the armour and no health regen and no CC.

But yeah, why not remove it…

like you said, stealth is just a crutch for thieves. it’s like critical mass for wizards in Diablo 3 which is about to be nerfed/removed (same thing as stealth in this game) and most wizard mains are happy (i’m very happy too) because the class itself doesn’t have to be balanced around it and will actually be good in PvP now

just FYI, many thieves and i don’t use stealth because we come from guild wars 1 where the assassin didn’t depend on stealth and/or just gameplay preference. Sanduskel may be a troll but sometimes i agree with him.

Nerf stealth to the ground. Remove it entirely I don’t care. The weekly QQ from bads that won’t L2P is too much to handle. The truth is those same bads would get rolled by thieves even if it doesn’t have stealth since it’d have something else.

Well…blinds. Learn to use them and love them. It will let you party facetank mobs in some instances, pistol offhand and the smokefield which also reflects projectiles and is on a lower cooldownthen the guardian (even if they trai for it? I dont know the numbers in my head). Also, thief brings the highest single target DPS the game has to offer if done right. Stealth is another thing that most people suddenly forgot when the thief’s viability is quesstioned SR and Blindingpowder + SB and a blinding field are easy ways to gain steath and no class alone comes even close.

In WvW we get the blood of the other borderlands, the dollies, and noone can stop you from doing so. Easy ways to pass large group off enemies/build/repair/assualt use your imagination. And for not being useful in zerg fights I say bah. Pressuring their backline is risky but is certainly rewarding and not useless at all. And dont forget we have the most spammable blastfinisher in game. We may lack boons to give to others but we have some group utility in that matter (boons on steal). Oh and ripping boons of like noone else can. Always nice to take that stability and watch the person you stole it from bounce around.

This is just the first things that pop out of my head when I think about thief and groups (forgot stealth stomps) there’s more I could add and others but it’s getting late and I’m still not finished with my paper.

  • Guardians = +5
  • Rangers = +3
  • Necromancer = +3
  • Warriors = +2
  • Engineers = +2
  • Mesmer = -1
  • Elementalist = -2
  • Thief = -4
  • AFK Person = -5

The team with the highest # wins. It’s not 100%, but it’s pretty accurate, and if there’s a large disparity between the teams’ #s it will not even be close. Not even by a little bit.

Try it out. Tell me if I can tweak some numbers. This is what I’ve been doing before matches, and usually I’m right. It only goes wrong when you have a really terrible guardian/warrior/necro/engie or a really good thief/mes/ele…but since skill is rare it usually holds up.

ahahaha this ranking is pretty accurate, even when I played a thief I tried to join the team with less/no thieves because when you have too many thieves on your team you lose more often than not.

P/D (heavy stealth/condition) using Caltrops (Dodge + Utility) was very powerful in PvE when I played it a long time ago. Not sure if anything has changed for it, but it was easy to solo champions, and 25 stacks of bleed (aoe) does a lot of damage — especially for requiring almost no effort.

I actually switched back to that for the Liandri fight. Failed horribly with P/P (mostly berserker), but killed her within 2-3 tries with P/D.

Well the armor you used for P/D is probably a lot tankier; Carrion has lots of vitality.
By the end of the Queen’s gauntlet, I could down liadri with P/P like 1 in 3 times. Though I use berserker/soldier/valkyrie mix so it’s about as tanky as carrion.

I agree with you that P/D is better for soloing champions though…cuz the guy who soloed a ton of champions used P/D.

We never really got any buffs that didn’t come with nerfs at the same time or later down the road…

S/P is only the best if you feel like standing still and smacking things to death, in which case you’d be better off just rolling a warrior- but who would want to do that?

Yes it is better to roll a warrior , but it must be said that in guild wars 1 the assassin fights his/her enemies head on!

I don’t know what you’re missing, I use S/P + shortbow for open world and S/P + P/P for dungeons. Both with signet of malice too.

Dagger has a big problem in that it’s single target. S/D is kinda eh???? It’s like what is this set for in PvE? Flanking strike is really unreliable. Trust me I really gave this set a lot of chances but in the end S/P is better for PvE.

P/D is also good for PvE though, possibly the best but may kill slower. Condi is just not my style though.

my warrior runs LB/GS in sPvP as banner regen bunker and 1v1 is almost impossible to dent my regen even if you’re a thief. S/D actually has better chance of overcoming the regen becuz it’s constant damage it’s harder for D/D…

anyways, good luck, cuz it’s uphill battle since SS/LB has even more defense than LB/GS.

I can’t say all of the changes, but I really think Mesmers are going to be REALLY strong. Their biggest weakness was S/D, which is being fixed, and their cleansing options have been buffed pretty heavily recently. On top of that, they were never weak, just countered by the stuff that was strong. The last time a class got buffed to remove its weaknesses, we got the current warrior.

I should have been clearer, S/D THIEVES are being fixed b/c they no longer have free-stunbreaks on infiltrator’s return (the #2 skill), which allowed them to so totally and completely crap all over mesmers when combined with the sword evade-spam. Mesmers now have the tools to survive/take down these theives, and never lost some heavy burst.

I also have been playing around, and interrupt mesmers have some REALLY strong skills/traits, esp: mantra of distraction (2-3x instant daze whenever), chaotic interruption (root for 2+s on daze, so a stunbreaker+condi clear needed to escape burst), bountiful interruption (5x might + other boon on interrupt), 8x vuln on interrupting a foe with daze (5pt and 15 pt in domination), as well kitten dmg vs. foes not using a skill. Combine that with some of the other powerful tools and there is a build in there somewhere that locks you down and bursts you annoyingly hard (probably S/P with GS).

Shatter will still be plenty good as well, and a good number of builds will really benefit from clearing 2x condi every heal for only adept-level trait.

is mesmer complaining about S/D’s “free” stunbreak on sword when they have the same thing on their staff, called phase retreat?

i dont play mesmer but as far as i know phase retreat has something called recharge!

10 sec base recharge, and it sets a clone, and doesn’t need to be preset so it’s very much a semi-spamable oh kitten button.
Shadow Return on the other hand needs to be preset, and has a limited usable time, so it’s useless if the enemy gets the drop on thr thief.

it can be traited to 6seconds. plus initiative is not free..it takes like 6 seconds to recharge the 5 initiative it costs for the IS/IR combo.

Combine that with some of the other powerful tools and there is a build in there somewhere that locks you down and bursts you annoyingly hard (probably S/P with GS).

Shatter will still be plenty good as well, and a good number of builds will really benefit from clearing 2x condi every heal for only adept-level trait.

is mesmer complaining about S/D’s “free” stunbreak on sword when they have the same thing on their staff, called phase retreat?

I know this guy’s request is kinda absurd seeing as it has no basis or arguments. But, I don’t agree with people finding it strange that he’s asking for a warrior buff.

Warrior needs a buff imo, they’re not that good compared to other classes.

i want to try solo this tower but it’s pretty much impossible on Tarnished Coast. there’s people running around everywhere.

maybe they should instance it somehow for people who want to try soloing it.

and if you successfully solo the whole thing, you get a title like “Nightmare Vanquisher” or something cool.
