Not sure why there’s any surprise to earnings being down quarter over quarter. There are few games that had a increase each year(LoL, Wow etc), while others had an almost immediate drop in quarterly earnings right out the gate. I think this holds more true for a genre as niche as mmos. I mean, are there any mmos besides WoW to actually increase as time went on? Maybe runescape, ff14 ARR and WoT, but that would be only a guess.
Sure, the earnings will go up for a couple quarters with the expansion, but that will only last until people run out of things to do and we will be back in the same place we are now talking about how the earnings don’t match those from previous years. There is nothing wrong with what’s going on. There’s a problem when they start laying off employees and cutting back on updates.
I get so confused every time I see a level80 with 400 or less achievement points. My first character had over 1k upon dinging 80.
It took me two weeks to ding 80 playing casually (2-4 hours a day) and ive only just hit 500AP a couple days ago. Ive been playing since jan 26 during the PAX discount.
2-4 hours a day is not casual, casual is an hour every two days
That’s what I’m saying. 2-4 hours a day is pretty hardcore imo. Moreso towards the 4 hours a day part. Most people I know don’t even have that much free time a week after work, sleep, family time etc.

GW2 is the most forgiving mmo I have ever played. So in that sense, I think you are playing the right game if you’re not very good.
3 months after GW2 released my first child was born. I spent most of my game time playing GW2 because it was the only mmo I played that would allow me to complete 99% of the content with one hand. I would move with my mouse and literally move my mouse over and click on each individual skill… lol. It was a great time to work on world completion.
The other hand was busy holding my daughter. In hindsight, I probably held her a little too much. She’s a spoiled little girl.

I think the game would benefit greatly from instanced raids. There’s little doubt in my mind that we won’t see them included in the expansion or shortly after.
I think 10 man would likely be the starting point, I wouldn’t be surprised to see them as high as 30 man.
Them talking about challenging raid content, them hiring a raid designer and them having a CDI to talk instanced raids leads me to believe we will be seeing instanced raiding in HoT.
Oh man, that looks awesome.
They didn’t directly say that it, but it was certainly implied imo.
“Devon Carver: Yeah, the one thing I would say is… the first person mode which we’ve had, we used to kind of toggle in and out of it on our dev client before, the biggest reason to stay away of it is that the sense of direction in combat is really important in our game, as well as positioning – positioning is really important. So, when you go into that first-person mode, you really completely lose the understanding of anything that is going on behind you, which can make our combat really difficult to understand and just difficult to play. There is some PvE scenarios where probably it wouldn’t be a big deal, but certainly in PvP or World versus World, it becomes very difficult to actually understand what is going on in combat. Which means that it really handicaps you as a player at that point; it makes it difficult to know what is going on and for that reason it is something we probably won’t be doing much work with, because we have really done a lot of work and continue to do a lot of work to make combat as readable and understandable as possible, and, like I said, direction and positionality is really important in our game, so not being able to say all that playable space is really valuable.”
Because they were worried that people would get stuck in 1st person and forget how to change back to 3rd person view thus handicapping yourself and teammates. It was said in an interview at gamescon 2014.
I feel pretty bad for anyone that made THIS game their lifestyle lol.
Couldn’t that be said for any video game? It would be unfortunate for anyone to live that way. I’m sure there are many circumstances that would lead into that lifestyle, medical conditions being one of them. I have to think if one is to consider a video game a lifestyle there is a reason for it.
I’ll definitely use tomes when leveling a revenant. I don’t see a reason not to level as quickly as possible. Getting to level 80 doesn’t stop you from running through low level zones or playing through low level PS. Why not have access to the entire game asap? Not only can you enjoy the content provided at level 1, 4, 35, 70…, but you can enjoy the content offered at level 80. I don’t see a single downside to hitting level 80 asap.
I guess I don’t understand the mentality behind the people that would hit max level quickly if given the resources to do so. Maybe I’m misunderstanding and the people saying they are going to level without tomes are doing so because they don’t have tomes to level.

Ranger is probably my favorite profession right now. The profession has some big issues, but still great fun to play.
Warrior was my first 80 and my most played. I like playing it, just feels a little more faceroll than the others.
I would highly recommend playing a ranger.
Many argue that ascended gear doesn’t count because it’s not “required.” I beg to differ, but the argument is frequently made nonetheless.
Heard the same argument used for gear grind in WoW. Apparently it also wasn’t required, because noone actually is forced to raid.
Were WoW players missing out on playable content by not grinding out gear?
At one point they were. It hasn’t been an issues in years due to the addition of the LFR tool.
Gear that can be obtained quickly after hitting max level will let you experience all the content the game has to offer. I think it’s been this way for over 5 years now.
They need to be really careful with this IMO. Gating content behind masteries sounds a lot like faction/gear grind. If I try to do content to only be told I need to get my mastery to x level it will make the game no different than the gearscore checks in other mmos.
also :
- note that total difference of primary stats is only 14 between ascended and exo.. very negligible.
man… you’re really trying to avoid that question, or you don’t have answer for it.
they did admit they made a mistake that they didn’t expect players to get exos so early in the game.
Colin literally said that we should have the best gear statistically by the time we hit level 80. This was before the launch of the game.
I’ve accepted that getting ascended armor is way too grindy and time consuming for me to ever get. I will deal with never having the best armor in the game.
Why not just think of it as a long term goal, and work on it in the background, without really trying? (as I have)
Crafting in this fashion without trying much I have a set of medium armor, a rifle, 2 pistols, and a short bow.
I guess it’s possible. I haven’t even considered it for a long time now. Last time I thought about it, I thought it was way too much for me to mess with. Especially when there would be 3 different sets needed.

All classes at lvl 80
78+ tomes of knowledge
Materials for an ascended heavy armorThat is my to do list, I’m working on my 3rd item.
they said you cant get Revanent to 80 instant.
Whoa, really? That sucks. Do you happen to remember where you saw this?
I would rather see dueling open to just about anywhere in the game world. It’s typically when I’m waiting for an event to start that I would benefit most from dueling. As of now I just tab out and forget all about the game and miss the event I just waited 30 mins for. Dueling would give me a reason to have the game up when waiting.
Keeping you from alt + tabbing is not a valid reason to add something to a game.
That’s just one of many reasons. The number one reason being that I find it enjoyable. It would be enjoyable to duel while waiting for a boss to spawn.

+1 for dueling.
I believe it would add tremendous value to the open world. Would be nice to do something like duel when waiting around for 20 mins for a boss to spawn.Exactly my thoughts on dueling also.
If implemented with an opt-out option under settings there should be no complaints from the anti dueling crowd, any complaints afterwards is just for the sake of argument.
With HoT around the corner, and new players joining plus returning players, I can imagine a big push for this feature down the road from the community. I’m also glad to know that Colin Johanson at one time wanted to see this implemented too.
One of the PvP developers recently said they plan to add dueling outside of PvP areas, it just isn’t the highest of priorities.

I would be so happy if they made season 1 replayable. I rushed through it without reading/listening to any of thw story and would love the chance to play it again.
Seems like the perfect time for SAB.
That would be a smart move.
I really don’t see a problem with this. They want to sell the expansion to as many people as possible. This is standard practice.
I didn’t really care either way. I would prefer to have a level cap increase with new gear as easily obtainable as exotic than ascended though.
I could grind 10 characters to max level and full berserker exotics before I could gear a single max leveled character in ascended.
GW2 would have worked awesomely without levels at all. I think something like that would have been cool.

Getting gear in WoW is extremely easy, has been for at least 3 expansions now. Besides, the best gear in WoW isn’t needed unless you plan on playing the highest difficulty raids(heroic and now mythic I believe), which an extremely small amount of the playerbase participates. You can still experience the raids with less difficulty in just a couple days after hitting max level. The same argument used for high level fractals could be used here.
It’s absolutely worth playing. It’s one of the best games ever made imo.
Gw2 is far more popular and profitable than CoH ever was, especially right be for it got shut down. Gw2 will be here for many years.
The expansion looks amazing, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the game pick up in population more than it has since shortly after release.
Ascended is grindy as heck.
It also is either “not mandatory” or “not BiS if downleveling”. Someone did the math once and showed it might be better to have an Exotic in there instead of Ascended in certain cases.
I’m pretty sure you hit a power cap in some lower level zones, not counting might. If I’m correct, didn’t look too much into it, ascended gear didn’t provide anything over exotic. Not even bloodlust sigil would take you over the cap.
This is from Wikipedia:
Grinding is a term used in video gaming to describe the process of engaging in repetitive tasks during video games.12 *The most common usage is in the context of MMORPGs like Realm of the Mad God, Tibia, or Lineage 3 in which it is often necessary for a character to repeatedly kill AI-controlled monsters, using basically the same strategy over and over again to advance their character level to be able to access newer content. *
Wouldn’t the rest of the quote be relevant as well?
“Grinding may be required by some games to unlock additional features such as level progression or additional items.”
I don’t think GW2 has terrible grind. I just can’t believe how grindy ascended gear is, which just so happens to be the best gear in the game, but that could possibly be cancelled out because there is no gear treadmill.

So glad that you’re excited about HoT. We’re thrilled to be able to announce it, and really looking forward to getting into the details of all those features we talked about today.
I can’t imagine how hard it must have been for you to keep your lips sealed all these months.
I’m a little surprised to see that the expansion is just like every other expansion mmos have been releasing for years now. Besides the level cap change, which is more rare but not unheard of in mmo expansions.
I am totally okay with this though. I’m happy anet didn’t do something “innovative” and mess around with another project of theirs.
As it stands now, I am absolutely thrilled for the expansion and will purchase the game as soon as it’s available, which will likely be for $50-$60. I don’t think there’s any possibility of it being less than $50.
I’m so excited to explore the new region. This expansion can’t come soon enough.
HoT looks freaking awesome.
Just an “improved” season 3 with a couple extra feature updates.
1. Dervish, ritualist, paragon or monk.
2. Raids. I used to love raiding in previous mmos and would like a reason to do it again.
3. Additional PvP modes.
4. New weapons
5. at least a dozen utility skills and several heals/elites per profession.
6. Dueling
7. Weapon dyes
8. 5+ full size zones
9. Hardmode
10. Pet AI is some of the worst I have ever experienced in a game. I would absolutely love for work to be put into this. I enjoy my ranger, I just hate how stupid my pet is.
not in any specific order

75% OMG, Anet is that how you try to cover up, players lost? this wont help. just make the expansion!!!!!
I don’t think this is what’s going on. I think they are just trying to lower the entry cost for new players to get the game plus expansion. I don’t think potential new players would be enticed to play if they had to spend $50 for the game and then another $50 for an expansion.
I see this as a good thing. I see it as a sign something really big is coming.
This is the same type of thing Blizzard does right before announcing/releasing an expansion.
This stuff looks really great!
Some people are discussing a level cap increase because Anet has talked about raising it on more than one occasion.
If done properly a level cap increase wouldn’t be a bad thing.
Quote from Mike O’Brien:
“we’ve always expected that we will someday raise the level cap in GW2”
I expect an expansion costing $50-$60. They might do something cool and let people buy the expansion with gems. Not sure how that will affect the market, but can only imagine that it will mean I can get a whole lot of gold for $10.
I’ve bought gold on numerous occasions just because the exchange rate was awesome.
I’m pretty excited for what is to come. Gw2 has some serious potential, lets hope the expansion will make gw2 great for me.
I definitely understand why the game is the best mmo for some.

Those are some pretty funny replies.
Would be weird if it is actually a couple Anet employees fed up with their “communication policy”.
Recently talked about by a dev. He said they want to add dueling, it’s just not a priority.
You’re better off waiting for the announcement at pax, nobody here knows what it will be. It might be big or it might be small. I couldn’t imagine thwy would book a spot in the main room for something small though.
I was averaging an exotic per 100 hours of gameplay… lol
I feel like I had the worst luck in the world.
I would say so. I was logging in to do 5 dailies for the laurel, now I just log in for a few secs. For about a week I was logging in significantly more to mess with the new pvp, but it is kind of a mess, especially the leaderboard being grind based instead of skill based.
Back when the NPE was released Anet said they were going to make changes because of the backlash. Have any of those changes actually made it into the game, or are there still people waiting on them?
I could be wrong, but seem to remember reading that.
Well, the original title of this thread was “Changes coming to NPE” but besides what was said in the first post, nothing else has been announced as far I know.
ah, I was the first reply to the thread too. I knew I heard it from somewhere lol.
I’m curious as to what we will see changed to the NPE. I’m guessing some kind of legacy system.

I think they will be announcing a full-fledged expansion. The “new framework for how an MMO can grow its universe.” is GW2 having a combination of the living story and an expansion pack at the same time.
Hopefully they will announce something that will allow more skill customization. Maybe 3-5 options per 1-5 slots per weapon. A couple dozen utilities per profession as well.
The most exciting thing is to see what kind of part the CDIs played in this. I’m expecting some serious talk about raids, GvG and guild halls at PAX. Anything short of expansion or expansion amount of content will likely lead to extreme disappointment.
