I would imagine it takes a huge amount of resources to monitor for addons/mods that are giving advantages rather than simply changing cosmetics. I also don’t know what kind of a strain it would put on the overall system to support these sorts of things.

Is it possible for us to get an idea from you, Chris, of the concepts you think stand out and may have an impact on the future of progression? Right now it’s a lot of you repeating our ideas optimistically, but not a lot of context (with all due respect).

I have been building a proposal on behalf of everyone. I am still seeing how the discussion plays out on other ideas. I will continue to update the proposal. This is how I am approaching the ideation discussion. I think I have called out the idea that are interesting however I don’t understadn what you mean by ‘Not a lot of context’.

If you are looking for definitive promises on work actions then I am afraid that is something I won’t be doing. If you are looking for thoughts on direction moving forward then you can find this all over the thread and there will be a summary in this regard upon conclusion of the Vertical discussion before centering of the Horizintal discussion.

Hope this helps?

Chris

If you’ve called out the ideas you find interesting/viable, I guess there’s no reason for my continued participation.
Please forgive my needlessly negative comment here. I have an issue with not feeling heard, but it’s my own issue, and not Chris’s responsibility. (Fun fact: Normally a possessive of a word ending with s would just be s’, but since Chris is a proper noun, it is grammatically correct to use “Chris’s”- I learned this from playing GW2. The more you know!)

Hi Nike,

There is no morass and no concept of ‘us’ trying to dig ourselves out of it.

((shrug)) I won’t quibble over the use of evocative terminology, but I suspect if we could somehow call for a show of hands and asked “Hey, how many people think BiS gear for 10 slots should be gated behind RNG and Crafting with ZERO alternatives” you’d end up counting more chirping crickets than paws going up .

((chirp—chirp—chirp))

Like I keep saying I am very much looking forward to concentrating on Horizontal Progression. In the meantime however I want to make sure that we give Ascended the attention it is due.

Other than wrangling some numbers/price points which would be better handled by people who can actually poll the game’s progress metrics (i.e. not us players), I think I’ve said my piece .

I look forward to the Horizontal Phase also…

…You sure you wouldn’t rather start it as a fresh and focused thread?

Might work out better than ‘gating’ it behind 30+ pages of tangential-at-best reading .

Sorry you don’t see it this way Nike. But this thread has been super useful for us already and no doubt super useful to those who have spent the time to contribute to it.

Chris

If I had known that you weren’t going to address my points on horizontal progression, I wouldn’t have spent my time contributing to a part of the discussion you don’t find relevant.

Then again, my vertical progression thoughts are faring about as well, so that may not be a fair evaluation.

I’m wondering why you think these threads are “useful” to players, honestly? They are a great many things, don’t get me wrong, but useful? We can’t use these ideas to do anything. It is interesting to get a developer perspective on things, and I certainly appreciate the clarity in some instances, and it’s nice to feel heard (probably), but there’s nothing that I can take and use in the game from these things. This brainstorming thing isn’t going on a resume someday. Is there another meaning that I’m overlooking?

I’m using on-board graphics on a really cheap machine. It’s so bad that I can no longer run the Sanctum Sprint (which is a big deal, if you know me). My load times are rarely longer than a minute or two. And if it’s two minutes, it’s because I’m in overflow. Could it be a RAM issue? Or corrupted data? Maybe run a GW2 repair?

LadyFearghus.3406 brings up a good point- it would be fantastic to introduce town clothes into crafting. That puts crafting and acquiring the clothes as two forms of horizontal progression in one fell swoop.

Also, I know I’m not the first person to mention this by far, but I think adding roleplay items (chairs you can sit in, things like the kites, steins, bouquets… etc) to crafting would be excellent.

Finally, I propose something really crazy: Here’s a way to make the personality system matter: What if your emotes changed based on your personality type? I think you should add tons of in-game emotes (and I think people would line up to write them for you for free) that vary. I think personality could be a huge part of this, but it could also vary based on Order, level, time played, achievement points, race, profession, even crafting skills could have their own emotes. But let’s stick to personality, for now.

Let’s say I’m maxxed out on ferocity: I type /grin, and out pops: “Guhracie bares her teeth in a ferocious grin.” I type in /giggle and this happens: “Guhracie giggles maniacally, seeming a little unhinged.” If I’m charming, /grin gives me something like: “Guhracie breaks into a sunny grin, eyes mischievous.” Giggle could be: “Guhracie ducks her head and giggles with delight.” For dignified- Grin: “Guhracie’s lips slowly turn upward as she breaks into a rare grin.” and Giggle: “Guhracie emits an awkward giggle, clapping her hand over her mouth too late to contain it.”

Then make some new and interesting ways to earn personality. Participating in certain dynamic events, etc.

Titles are another really cheap way to customize. Titles can apply to all types of players- you don’t have to only make titles for the really hard stuff (and you don’t, I realize) so everyone has something to put on their names. I think adding guild rank to titles would be interesting, as well as something to tie in with your chosen order and where you are in your personal story. And, to repeat my theme- something personality-based would be nice.

I think order-based quests would be a good way to bring that into the game. I could see it lasting a whole month and take into account a character’s personality, profession, rank in the order, and/or crafting skills. This would be an excellent way to introduce another way to earn laurels. Order progression would be another good end-game solution, in my opinion. It could be a branching thing that gives access to sigils/runes as well as (maybe?) new spells and, of course, new skins. Maybe even character boosts. Access to certain areas with some small, interesting things in them. I am just spit-balling at this point.

I still think that in order to discuss character progression, we have to take a hard look at broken professions, but these are some other things that I’ve either seen mentioned and/or had rolling around in my head.

Several people have made mention of the rising amount of materials we need in order to craft ascended gear. I really feel like this is important to note, given that our basic (meaning the base line) scale for maximum storage is 250 of any given item, having any recipe require 10,000 of something is downright punitive. You guys really need to think in terms of scale when you’re coming up with these recipes. If we are meant to be thinking in terms of tens of thousands of items, maybe you should increase our base storage accordingly (and keep properly scaled collection expanders on the gem store, of course). At some point, you have to (this was changed to kitten, for reasons that will become obvious, but the word I’m looking for is spelled just like access, except the c’s are s’es) kitten whether all those extra zeros really add anything, or if they could be factored down to reasonable amounts if the effort to gain them is increased, or something, to offset the decrease.

I heard peaople appealing for a branching class developement. Greatly discribed by the player Orpheos.

I am against this kind of direction, even though i love this concept in other games.

Guild Wars 2 in it`s core allready allows this multi class developement along the lines, thanks to it`s trait and skill limitations.
If i want to play another class direction, i just change how i set these up.

A branching tree which limits my choices does not make any sense with the current system in place.

I still cannot believe that we’re even discussing character progression without addressing broken class mechanics that impede progression. It’s like fixing the roof while the foundation crumbles beneath you.

I agree with both of these gentlemen/ladies/nondescript-individuals-of-worth.

It’s more of a discussion for another thread, but the simple fact is the core class customization in Guild Wars 2 is a good idea, it just doesn’t have enough love.

But that is a discussion for another thread on another day.

I don’t see how it isn’t directly tied in, when Chris is discussing build viability, diversity and access to new skills and traits. And it certainly ties into vertical progression, in the sense that engineers do not benefit from the ascended weapon boost if they opt to have a weapon swap. If horizontal progression is tied at all to delving into class diversity, I don’t see how it isn’t utterly necessary to fix broken mechanics first.

Does cooking even give the full 10 levels anymore?
Should “downed” skills be part of progression?
Are cosmetics a part of horizontal progression?
Is underwater combat ever going to be more interesting and fully developed?
Should underwater skills be a part of progression?

I guess what I’d like to know is what the development team has decided to completely scrap as a waste of time (underwater breathing masks, for example) and what is off the table (the way kits “function” for engineers?) and what aspects of the game really matter in terms of progression.

EDIT: To answer the controversial question about what I like about vertical progression: I like that it adds new skins into the game. I like that it gives value to materials that are generally undervalued, at least for a little while. I like it when it is meaningful in terms of the content (adding agony resist for fractals, for example), but not when the content is built around a vertical progression (increasing level cap just to increase stat allocation/dps numbers/etc). I like vertical progression that helps my entire account (account bound luck).

If they’re going to start charging tax as well, the least they can do is factor that into the price listing on the store. You really have no idea if you’re going to be taxed unless you go through it since the changes.

There’s a confirmation screen before you make the purchase that shows you the total with tax.

Although I’ve always had tax added to my gem purchases, so this is not a new thing for me. (I’ve only ever used the in-game mechanism, never gem cards) I wonder if that might be because I live in the state in which the company is based.

Because sometimes content lasts four weeks. And since this is the end of the year, and there won’t be another patch for another month, it’s not unreasonable to think that they might leave in content to stretch it out and build up some goodwill. Because, due to Boss “Week” there was no guarantee that Fractal “Fortnight” meant anything other than “alliteration!”

You guys act like there was only one living story update that matters, boss week (which lasted 2 weeks anyways) and you ignore all the others, ie, every mid month update, which lasted 2 weeks. You ignore the “fortnight” thing, and dismiss it as if it’s completely meaningless. You talk about no content for a month, when we just got 1 living story update, AND Wintersday. and pretend that there’s enough content in fractured to last another 2 weeks. Oh, and by the way: all the content that was in fractured? Still in fractals. You can keep doing it.

Yes, I’m aware it’s still there. The meta and associated reward(s) are gone, though.

However, there’s a reason people are uncertain of the timing on these sorts of things: When the aetherblade path was added to TA, it was the first update that month and it only lasted 2 weeks. The next patch, mid-month, lasted a month. There was a great deal of consternation and gnashing of teeth, and people have been asking for clarity on end-times since then. So, yeah, since “Week” in “Boss Week” was totally meaningless, and not ALL mid-month updates have been two-week updates, I absolutely and utterly doubted the veracity of “Fortnight” in the recent patch name. I really have no idea how else to explain this situation to you, if you don’t follow me at this point.

Hey, Chris, I have tried to end this on a really positive note, so if you could please bear with me, I would really appreciate it.

Art Progression
Art progression! It’s horizontal why not do it more!!! Well we do this a lot all ready and a lot of it’s constraints comes down to costs.

You already make a ton of Art progression… but you pour all that effort into cheap and easy stuff that doesn’t bring a lot of pleasure to me.

It’s obviously cheap for you to make a backpack, but everyone knows that now, so backpacks are pretty dull.

It’s easy for me to earn the backpack-of-the-month, but everyone knows that too, so no one oohs and ahhs over my shiny backpack because everyone has it already anyway.

So you’re spending a lot of artist time on this stuff, for relatively little player-happiness payout (from me, anyway). Try reassigning the artists to pour their time into something more substantial (like armor sets), and put it behind a more impressive achievement than “mess around in the LS for two weeks”.

I’d get more satisfaction from that, even if these more substantial art rewards couldn’t come every two weeks and replaced some backpacks-of-the-month.

Quoted for truth. I’d also like to point out that adding a new complete armor set into the game (not via the gemstore) would likely buy goodwill enough to balance the cost. I initially found the gemstore to be very well-balanced, but seeing all these floods of weapon skins and then the four sets per armor class- it’s starting to chafe a little. Combined with the rising costs (some whole sets of armor are 500gems; a dagger was 600 gems- the single pieces were also 600 gems each… it’s weird and inconsistent), it’s breeding some ill-will.

It would be awesome if the living story meta rewards built a set, in fact, rather than tossing out disparate pieces here and there.

Character Progression For Engineers

Engineers do not have access to the same cosmetic character progression everyone else does. This should not be news to any of the developers reading this, but just in case, here are ways engineers are excluded, including a couple of vertical progression issues.

  • Build diversity is limited by how few weapons we can use. Anyone who says kits aren’t a core mechanic of engineers has obviously never played one. Without equipping kits, there is no weapon swapping, and the only weapons we have access to are pistols, rifles and shields. That’s it.
  • Any attempt to customize our look is utterly compromised if we want to use kits, which are our “version” of weapon swaps. They replace any back item with the hobo sack themed items, which also replace any weapons we might have equipped.
  • Our ugly version of weapon swaps, which remove any weapon diversity, also remove at least one utility slot for our actual skills. (Yes, we get an F skill to somewhat compensate. This means even less diversity, since we can’t customize how we build our utilities, though.)
  • Those kit weapons will not scale to the damage output of our weapons. (They only scale as far as exotic)
  • We’re the only class without access to Aegis on demand in fractals.
  • There are pages of reported bugs that have not been addressed since release.

Chris, I am feeling like there really isn’t a future in even having an engineer. I want to be positive, going forward. But I don’t feel like putting any effort into character progression while my main profession is so hindered. You guys have proven me wrong before- pulling the recent reskin of T3 human cultural armor off the gemstore, and changing gathering tools to account bound, notably. I’ve seen some effort in armor design toward Charr. I am a fan, and I’ve gotten into trouble over my heated defense of GW2. I am not among those who believe this initiative is to placate; I believe we have entered into this in good faith, on both sides. There are MANY things that GW2 gets right, for me. But I hope you will add broken class mechanics to your list of topics to ponder within the umbrella of character progression.

1. Skin Acquisition to be more like the zenith skins- account bound, reusable, and self-contained.
2. Fix broken class mechanics. Engineers and rangers are at the top of my list.
3. Balance PvP, WvW and PvE separately.
4. Absolutely no more gear treadmills.
5. The ability to ignore a person (by clicking on their name) from emotes.
6. The ability to group up for daily activities.
7. Daily activities that include a rotation of all the previous mini-games, but the ability to access any of them on any day. (Only one gives credit for achievement/chest reward/allows grouping, etc.)
8. More and varied ways to acquire laurels.

I must say, though- I’m glad this thread isn’t full of wish fulfillment. There’s tons of stuff listed that I wouldn’t want to see happen.

I honestly do not feel there is any way to quantify whether or not feedback from these things is ever used, since we’re being encouraged to provide philosophical feedback more than anything else. Here’s what I don’t understand about gear progression: It’s so weird. It’s totally unfinished; there’s no method of acquisition for higher end underwater gear, for example. Then there’s this whole system of insertables, which is really not intuitive. Runes, sigils, marks, gems, 2 infusion types, doubloons…. It feels messy. I also have no idea why some items have a collectible spot and others do not. There are plenty of cooking items that only work as ingredients, but they don’t deposit, for example. It is punitive to switch to new gear and costly in terms of gold and space to keep gear for different builds/situations.

Horizontal progression is just so difficult to even manage. Even on the same class of armor, dyes vary wildly in coloration. There’s not enough space to hold all the gear/skins we have been getting, and the cost of switching looks is prohibitive. There has been a distinct lack of full armor sets being added to the game- I don’t think it needs to be an equal ratio with the gemstore sets, but maybe 3:1 isn’t a terrible idea? Of course, I’m all for postponing if it means less clipping issues with non-human races.

Implementing the zenith/radiant/hellfire pieces the way you did shows that you have the capability to unlock and store skins in a much more permanent and efficient way, and I think people are really wondering when you are going to utilize that to its full potential.

Also, I don’t think it’s off-topic to discuss progression resets. There’s precedent for it, now, with the fractal level resets.

Will there be another stat increase in gear? Will cooking get bumped up to 500? Will crafting be expanded again?

Mmmmm…..Ascended doughnuts.

In all seriousness, I wouldn’t consider skins and how you dye something as ‘progression’, or at the very least, the progression is very personal to the individual. Who’s to say someone who likes the Karma weapons in a level 2 area hasn’t progressed?

Rather, it’s more along the lines of cosmetic customization, much like the character creator, unless the look of the gear was tied to challenges you went through to get it (Fractal Capacitor comes to mind).

As for storage, yes, they could do with a wardrobe. Even if they gave you 3 slots which you could store a set, as well as the template for that build, and you could buy additional slots at your pleasure.

Maybe I wasn’t clear, because when I talk about cosmetic customization, I’m talking about horizontal progression.

I actually think there are some hidden gems in the low level karma vendors. I still think that all cosmetic customization plays into horizontal progression, and that includes the way dyes work. It’s irritating to have a dye look perfect on one piece and then clash on another piece.

I think dyes are the way to go with increasing the cooking cap to 500, by the way. A recipe for straight unidentified dyes, dyes that give minor glow-type effects (which can be combined with one regular dye, rather than being used on its own), dyes with patterns… there’s a lot of potential with them being rewards for progression- I’d love to see a set of 3 dyes as a meta reward, rather than in the gemstore. There is plenty more they could do, rather than minis and backpieces, and other random skins.

I think ease of use is something they really need to consider, at this point, for horizontal progression.

And ascended doughnuts. Take note, anet!

The personal story has Trahearne.

Many do not like the plant people. Less than 15% of GW2 players actually have a sylvari, let alone main a sylvari. This should give you an idea.

Clarify the "Unique" designation

in Suggestions

Guhracie.3419

Every few days, we get a new topic from somebody who didn’t understand that “Unique” means you can’t have more than one equipped. Please, please, please, Anet- change the designation to Unique-Equipped, and give a warning pop-up when it is being purchased that only one of that item can be equipped on a character. At least this way, you’ll probably cut down on the topics by half.

Yep, good way to make people spend more money on gems. I bought 800 yesterday… Luckily, I don’t care about a green quaggan backpack and I rarely use/remember to use minis.

Yesterday was the first of December, so it counts.

It would be nice to flag items as temporary, because I’m never sure which ones will stay in the gemstore permanently. Will the new weapon skins be leaving? How soon, if so? I am talking about the axe, dagger and staff specifically, on the gemstore for 600 gems each.

So I’ve been out of town since about page 11 or 12 of this thread, but I said some uncharitable things about how Anet was likely to respond (or, rather, not respond) to this situation. Anet, I just wanted to come back and say that I think you’ve made the right call, and I was completely wrong to assume non-action on your part. I know this is a tough situation all around, but kudos for making the hard call, there.

Well, trait points, for one thing. Also, you can use skill points to buy certain items in the game. Check the wiki for “skill points” to learn more about that. But, yeah, mainly traits.

EDIT: Also, some skills are situational. You may not always want them out, but sometimes they help in specific encounters, so it’s always good to have a variety of skills. Not to mention, you can’t have unlocked all of your skill slots yet, right? At the very least you’ll need to get an elite skill.

So – last time I posted this thread was on page 3. We are now on page 8. Could they really not have noticed it all this time?

Its almost two in the morning during a period that is often paid time off in some industries. Not excusing a lack of response I just wonder if the people who can make a call on this are on their way to grandma’s house for turkey and pie.

This thread has been around all day long. If they were going to respond, they would have done it by now.

Personally, Anet, I think it’s strange you didn’t have some pre-planned statement to acknowledge the complaints that you had to know would be incoming. Here’s my suggestion:

“Hi guys! Sorry for the delay in my response, but we’ve been busy with the update and the holiday. Happy turkey day for those of you in the US! It’s great to have all my relatives in town and I’m feeling really thankful for many things this year.

We understand that many of you are upset or disappointed with the direction we’ve taken with our latest set of gem store armor skins, and I personally understand that to some degree. Some responses have been inappropriate and over-the-top, but I do appreciate the respectful discussion from the rest of you.

The fact of the matter is that there are variations on these armors that we feel make them distinct enough to stand on their own as unique and separate from the sets you are associating with them. Again, I apologize to those of you who are disappointed, but this is not something we are going to reconsider. I also cannot comment on the potential for future skins inspired by legendary weapons or other cultural armor, except to say that nothing is off the table. Thank you for bearing with us, and have a happy holiday, everyone! I’m off to eat some turkey!"

Anet, if you want to hire me to write these up for you, I might consider it. You have my email address.

It will do no good to submit a ticket at best you will be laughed at.

This is the problem with “Free 2 Play” games… There is no real way to hold the company accountable.

Snipped by me for space/relevant information.

You mean like it did no good for people to ask for refunds on their unlimited harvesting tools when that was changed? Or how customer service ignores all of their tickets?

The way to hold Anet responsible is to stop supporting their game. Logging in, recommending/reviewing favorably, and shopping in the gem store all impact the game. If you think Anet doesn’t listen/help their customers, you are seriously impaired, or not paying attention.

I think selling the reskins is a terribly shabby and cheap treatment of the customers, but acting like they don’t do anything right is just wrong.

Can I open a support ticket to refund my T3 cultural armor??

Nope, lol.

So, why not? When the new gathering tools were introduced we could open up a ticket if we previously bought a tool under different circumstances.
I don’t really see the difference to this situation. If this armor had been available, I think some of us wouldn’t have bought the t3 armor, which is a lot more expensive than the shop armor.
I think it’s a reasonable question.

Technically, you can open a support ticket for anything your heart desires (relating to customer support, obviously), so asking the players if you can do that is sort of strange. Be like Nike. Just do it.

Good luck to new fractal players...

Guhracie.3419

Oh don’t get me wrong, we finished it, it’s just the guy had no idea what he was doing, and started on 10 because his friend told him it was a good idea. If you know what your doing at 35, I think you can make it, but I’d much prefer an exotic’d up 80.

There is no guarantee that said lvl 80 have ever been to the Fractals either though. Just because one is lvl 80 doesn’t mean you have a clue about what you are doing.

You do have a larger room for error though as a level 80. Would you do fractals in a group of level 35’s? You probably aren’t part of the lv35 vs 80 part of the thread but I wanted to bring up that question.

You… Can’t do a fractal above 9 with level 35s….. Agony… And stuff…. Being scaled to 80 doesn’t mean…. Never mind.
I would do a fractal with a bunch of people with prl 35, though……..

What are we even talking about here?!

You’ll have to read the entire thread. It was brought up that level 35’s could do fractals without being a liability or being carried. What you just wrote about AR is another thing that I agree with.

I read the entire thread. There was something about comparing lvl 80s to lvl 35s and how some lvl 80s are bad or not as good as a good 35, but that’s really not the case if those levels are strictly prl. A level 80 prl can’t really be a bad player. A level 35 character can be better in say, AC than a crappy lvl 80, but we’re not talking about dungeons, we’re talking about fractals.

So I’m confused.

They’re not referencing fractal personal levels being at 80 and 35, they’re talking about how anyone gets scaled up to level 80 regardless of what their actual character level is in fractals, and how ill-advised it is (or, some people are arguing, is not) to bring a person whose character level is 35 versus a character level of 80.

Let me make this really simple: Pay to win means that using the cash shop gives you an advantage that cannot be gained without using real money.

Therefore, GW2 is not pay to win.

In response to the original question, I don’t play games that are pay to win, so I can tell you that one minor change would be my absence.

FYI: zones do not up-scale. Instances sometimes up-scale, WvW up-scales, but zones definitely do not. At level 5 you cannot enter other zones that aren’t 1-15 without getting absolutely destroyed.

Yes you can enter those zones. There is not one restriction of entering zones that are not at your level. Other games would not let you enter this zone till you reach that level or finished a specific story to get there. That you getting face rolled is different, but you are not restricted of entering that zone.

To make this clear, I said zones would upscale you because specific living stories as the tower of nightmare for example, is not declared as a so called instance. And we have had plenty of those temporary stories implemented to the game.

EDIT: I am not addressing anything else you’ve brought up because I think the way scaling works is excellent.

The tower of nightmare is an instance. It is its own map, and you pass through a zone break to get into it.

Hey Chris,

Here is why I am opposed to doing a new call for topics:
1. It eats up time that could be used collaborating.
2. I didn’t vote for the living story in the original call for topics. So by doing another call, it would feel like all the people who did vote for living story get a second vote overwriting mine. Then you call again, and all the people who voted for that topic and the living story have once again overwritten my voice. This isn’t a perfect explanation, but I hope it’s coming across well enough.

I’m not saying you should never do another call for topics, but if you’re going to do a vote-based decision, do the top 3 before starting over, please.
