whoosh
fine, I’ll use more realistic numbers:
1,000 people listing 1,000 items, etc. etc. etc.
the point is that large groups of people do not coordinate to place sell listings at the same time. they do it over a significant period of time. extending how long it takes to list them extends that length by that same extension. so an extra 20 seconds added on to 12 hours makes almost no difference. If it really comes down to their needing to buy a server that can work 0.023% faster, they have bigger problems.
I agree with everyone else that it’s speculation due to discontinue.
I just want to know how you made the thought jump from “prices going up all of a sudden” to “a guild of people and they are manipulating the market”.
you forgot one:
Character Slot Expansion for 800 gems = 38g24s00c for 80 slots = 47s80c per item.
13s16c dust cost x 5 dust / 5 = 13s16c for 1 master tuning crystal which sells for 9s57c
they are losing money. If they are finding all the materials they use to make it, they are still losing money as they are getting 3.59s less than they could = losing money.
people are using these recipes (and the potent ones too) to get to level 440 by paying the least price.
I’m not so sure it is the least price… 3.59s loss each, compared to 5g loss per exotic crafted. but discovering 1 exotic gives like 5 levels while it takes like 100 potions (each crafting gives 5, so 20 craftings) to get 1 level. 1g/level vs. 3.6g/level.
I took this opportunity to buy several stacks of these potions at 1/2 what it will ever cost to make them knowing they will go back up in a couple weeks. how do I know it will never cost less to make them? their cost is linked to ecto cost. even if ecto drop to 20s, that means it will cost 11s to make a dust = 11s to make 1 of these potions. dust is also really cheap right now… everyone’s salvaging a lot of ecto for the luck. every time they do that, they are losing about 4s. I prefer making a profit while getting luck
funny people.
the only potential problem with converting one tier to another is the exchange rate. current upgrading gives 17 TX+1 from 250 TX materials (or 90 if less than T6), then add the set 65s cost of doing this and you get something that’s not even profitable at the current price skews.
5 1.65 0.57 0.09 0.16
6 22.30 10.09 2.05 7.39
1.65 × 250 + 65 + 22.3 = 500 to make 17, which would otherwise cost 22.3 × 17 = 380.
converting is not used if it’s not profitable, and it’s almost never profitable at this exchange rate.
looking at mist essences, 5 vials = 1 glob, while 1 glob = 3 vials.
extrapolating: 1 ancient wood plank would give 24.5 elder wood plank. assuming 5 dust is also needed, that’s 87s to make 40.4s worth of wood.
elder to hard would probably be profitable, but I have low confidence it would be profitable enough to even out the trend you idealize.
the argument of delaying to even out usage is complete kitten.
say an update comes out and 1 million people need to sell their ectos before they plummet.
as is, 1 million people place 1 million sell listings.
say they all have 5 stacks. 1 million people place 5 million sell listings.
say they all have 10 stacks. 1 million people place 7 million sell listings, wait 10 seconds, 1 million people place 3 million sell listings. 10 million sell listings in 20 seconds.
if error was removed, that would be 10 million sell listings in 10 seconds. (1 second per listing)
while technically easier on the server, the amount of coordination needed to result in this is mind-boggling. 10 million people all clicking ‘sell’ at the same moment??? real lift would be closer to: 1 million people place 10 million sell listings in 12 hours.
stretching 10 seconds out to 20 seconds gives the server 0.023% more leeway in this time frame. there would be a bell-curve associated with how many sell listings over a period of time after the update, the peak probably being a minute or so after the update; having this delay will make the bell curve 0.023% wider and 0.023% shorter.
in short, it’s meaningless in the big picture but a pain in the kiester for the individual user.
the failed attempt at anti-bot theory is at least plausible.
except people never see it as “oh, I have +40% condition damage from food, I’ll just always use that and take out those 30 trait points to use elsewhere”. they see it as “oh, I’ll get an extra 40% condition damage to my already +30% condition damage to make my bleeds even better than they were before!”
people shouldn’t choose traits for the stats they give. they should primarily be chosen for the skills they get from those traits.
but that’s limited use.
the best laurel → gold is either from T6 mats or unid dyes. it depends on TP prices for which is better at any given moment.
personally, I’ll be using mine to get obsidian shards as karma is now really hard to get.
vials do not drop at fractals level 10 and up (only drop on levels 1-9). globs drop 10-19, shards 20+.
5 vials can be forged into 1 glob
1 glob can be forged into 3 vials
5 globs can be forged into 1 shard
1 shard can be forged into 3 globs
they used to drop more frequently (hence why I have 18 extra shards after infusioning all trinkets on 2 characters), but are more rare now. Currently they drop about once every 5 fractal runs (so 20 fractals) Most of the mist essences I got were from dredge or volcano or ascalon fractal (these have a lot of mobs that drop loot). If you want to farm for them, I recommend volcano as the mobs that drop the loot are in the first room.
A bug as huge as that wouldn’t have stayed an entire year. The chances that anyone at anet would admit putting in a nuisance on purpose is zero. If it was a bug, they would have said so after an entire year. The fact that nothing has been said or done means that it was intentional.
well… I can count on left hand the number of updates they’ve done to the TP since launch:
1 – added the ‘projected profit’ display
(in october: http://guildwars2.mmmos.com/?page=view&id=2587, this how it was: http://i.imgur.com/28M7T.jpg)
2 – added ‘ascended’ to the rarity list
It’s something they’ve ignored, so clearly not a priority. and since this error is not game-breaking, it doesn’t get addressed.
a friend of someone’s roommate’s sister’s bookie said that about a month after launch Anet had said it was intentional and to fight botting. obviously not a reliable source, but someone’s said it was like that. and since the search doesn’t work… anyone want to scan through the first 100 or so pages of the bug forum for us?

forward in combat = 210 in/sec
strafing in combat = 180 in/sec (85.7% as much)
noticeable, but just barely. I’m very content with the speeds for these. I don’t even have a key mapped for backpedaling, so that helps with not having to deal with slow
wait, so they have a ‘report for abusive behavior’ button, but if you use it, you still have to put up with them? why doesn’t reporting also perma-block everything that person ever says in any way from you seeing (including emotes, whispers, party chat, map chat, and turn their toon into the generic animation). If I report someone for being abusive, I want them gone from my life instantly and Anet can sort out their punishment later.
how often you see this error is probably proportional to how fast your computer is and/or your internet. for me, I see it almost more often than items I sell.
as an anti-bot system, it’s less than worthless. the reason is that it inhibits people but bots deal with it just fine, allowing bots to greatly outpace people.
as alternatives, I’ve suggested a few in the past: can’t post more than 1 thing every 2 seconds. can’t post more than 500 things per day. ban the bots and no limits.
the current buy order price for superior sharpening stones is about half the amount it costs to make them. as Tom said, this is due to people wanting to level their weaponsmith. the other superiors are similar but not as bad.
however, that just makes your point even more – even at half price, they are still too expensive for you :P
the difference between them is only 2%, but 2% of 3000 is 60. that’s not a small number to scoff at compared to other foods.
personally, I carry around like 8 different foods ranging from cheap to expensive. cheap I will use anywhere and everywhere for even the slightest cause (by cheap I mean less than 20c each). expensive (2-10s, such as superior sharpening stones) get used in places like dungeons or invasions or wvw.
I haven’t seen this for sale – did you datamine it?
hehehe, I accidentally dim my screen all the time.
In short: the F1 key is the shortcut to dim the display, and you’re pressing it by mistake. F2 is the shortcut to make it brighter
I’m not on my gaming computer right now, and I’m noticing that there is no icon indicating this on this keyboard, so it looks like not all keyboards show this feature. Also, since I just tried it and F1 does nothing, it looks like not all Mac OS versions have this shortcut.
My gaming computer keyboard that has the dimmer icon is newer and has an apple full desktop keyboard
I completed all achievements
more skins than needed
no reason to return
baubles worthless without obsidian
just do the story and all 4 paths again – problem solved!
I think the loot these bags drop is not set when you get the bag. remember the bags from the gauntlet? people saved up thousands, then they patched it and made them not give silver anymore.
my guess is that you will get level 69 loot from it, and probably no bloodstone dust. but I do request you open a few (less than 5) and tell us the results
it aggravates me to no end when someone lists 1 item at buy order price + 1c. to me, they effectively hide the actual selling price, so I have to search for the item on the TP, see that the next-lowest price is 60s above that, then go list mine at that price instead. people wanting to manipulate the market… (their goal is that someone like me won’t take the time to notice they drastically decreased the sell price, hoping that I’ll sell 250 at that price, then they’ll buy all 250, remove their listing, relist at actual price. it’s like buy orders but requires more work and makes people who know to look for it annoyed.
if that sell listing gives anything close to a profit if I bought and sold at actual price, I buy it and laugh at their misfortune.
pick the exotics you salvage carefully. So far, I’m at 24 dark matter from ~30 exotics, and every single one of those has given me gold profit in addition to dark matter. after bloodstone dust, dark matter is the second-most easiest to get ascended-making material (since you only need 10 per ascended)
box of armor costs as much as all the armor it gives.
recipe: box of armor costs as much as 1 of the armors it gives + other stuff.
so if someone wanted to make a box of celstial armor, they would end up paying like 20% more than if they just made the armors individually.
now, if you could sell this box, people would be interested to buy it and you could probably sell at a profit, making that initial investment pay off.
I assume it was the same drop rate. I can tell you it’s at least close to it, though that is based purely on observations of salvaging maybe 100 exotics with Master Salvage Kit.
btw: only use BLSK if the socket in the exotic is worth more than ~1.5g
yeah, most back items can now be salvaged. I was a little annoyed by it. A few months ago, I had about 6,000 rare back items (mostly those charred warmers) in storage waiting till they could be salvaged. But I sold them a month ago because I thought this update wasn’t happening.
one will get you clovers 1-by-1, the other is 10-by-10. that’s the only difference. If you do the 1-by-1, your results will be more average (it takes about 231 obsidian shards). If you do 10-by-10, your results will be more likely to be off-average. case-in-point: I got 60 clovers from about 10 forgings of 10-at-a-time, then the last 10 took another 15 forgings.
If you could buy more stacks of material storage like you can bank tab space for gems, I would be soooo happy.
so… 800 gems at 5g/100 gems = 40g
it saves 0.52c per salvage over basic SK
that means it will take 769,231 salvages to get back your purchase price.
it has been estimated that getting to 300% mf will require around 4.2 million luck.
you get about 10 luck per fine item you salvage, so that’s 420,000 salvages. a pretty significant percent of the way to that 769k.
newish players can not find and buy enough crafting materials to keep even one of their chosen crafts in pace with their level. income is just too low below level 80.
gw2crafts.net has this to say:
weaponsmith level 0-75 costs 1.5g and will make you at highest a level 25 Iron weapon
75 to 150 will cost 8g and at the end you can make at highest a level 40 Steel weapon
that’s a total of 9.5g before level 40. I would like to shake the hand of the person that could make that happen.
crafting is for alts and level 80’s.
I’ve wanted rewards to be proportional to participation since day 6 (day 1-5 were spent wondering where everything is and what’s that and what does salvage do and I should hold onto old armor in case I’ll use it again)
this would answer so many problems: magic find users not contributing enough, champ running leeches, berserkers that are always dying, etc.
and not just event participation – killing a mob as well. If you attack that champ once, you should not get the same loot as someone that’s been going mono-a-mono with it for 10 minutes.
and participation shouldn’t just be hitting it… it should include it hitting you, and you evading it, and applied conditions, and just spending time in the vicinity of it.
an hour is too long?
you must be that person that quit just because we rolled dredge on the 3rd fractal. btw, we finished that one, thank you very much.
berserker vs. magic find
it’s less outrageous now, but I still see a lot of “if you’re not full berserker, you should be ashamed of your leeching and banned”
yes
no weapon, so no attacking. however, level 6! utility skills. assuming you still have the skill point, or used it on an offensive skill, you can kill a low level mob with it. do this a few times and you’ll have enough copper for a weapon. white weapons from merchants are about 40c-60c.
oh, jumping puzzles! just do one and you should get equipment and gems enough to get the weapon of your choice. I recommend the one behind the waterfall in Lion’s Arch.
quickest way I can think is just say you are flat broke and ask for a silver in map chat.
more likely is that people will find that killing the mobs gives more reward than the final chest, so they will brain-bash anyone attempting to win the event and focus on farming mobs.
current teq gold credit is not “a few times”. I’ve attacked 3 times and got bronze credit before.
even if it only took 1 hit to get credit, people aren’t going to spend the time to go up there, hit him, then run back to defend a cannon. have you seen the zerg of people at jormag? 90% of them sit in front of him in a cluster while the other 10% kill ice stalagmites.

it does look like a torch upgrade.
on the other end of that hallway is a big door with a hand on it. kinda like the hand that you push stuff with. my guess is you need the T2 hand to open it. I haven’t tried using moto’s finger on that door yet…
Iron ore is currently 1s25c
in the MF, you can do this:
250 copper ore + 1 iron ore + 5 pile of shimmering dust + 1 philosopher’s stone = 40-150 iron ore (let’s say 95 on average)
working backwards, you get 1g18s75c out of it, minus 2s75c for dust, minus 1s25c for iron ore, you end up getting 46c per copper ore invested. So if you can get copper ore for cheaper than 46c, you’re making a profit (or at least getting iron ore cheaper)
similar for green wood logs.
also, there aren’t as many people farming T1 materials as there used to be.
unfortunately, I didn’t realize this was possible until it wasn’t profitable anymore :P
Laeir is right – there are just as many trees as metal nodes, but metal is used in 6 crafting professions while wood is used in like 2.1 (sure, weaponsmith can use it, but it only makes up like 1/10 of what they use)
leather and cloth is similar in that very few use it, but those are exempt as there is also much less supply of them.
I’m also missing these recipes from my crafting… sorta. My artificer (level 463) has them (and all the ascended recipes), my weaponsmith (level 410) has them (and all the ascended recipes), but my huntsman (level 440) has nothing. no luck conversion, no ascended. it’s very puzzling. character level isn’t an issue – character with huntsman in 80 while character with weaponsmith is 42.
one fun thing: they made a big deal out of how they were going to nerf how much karma you get from potions by removing boosters, but they left out the part where they would removed all sources of karma potions. kinda renders the first part moot.
CreativeAnarchy, world bosses yield less than 380 karma each. Let’s give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you also do a pre-event for all of them. that’s 700 karma per event. 100k would be 142 events. in one week, that would be 20 events per day. You’re one hard-core gamer.
Since June or so, I’ve been plagued by game crashes. re-installing the client helps for a short time, but that’s not why I’m here right now.
The point is that 99% of the crashes happen during huge events (claw of jormag, invasion, karka queen) where there is an overflow for anyone that didn’t get there in time.
The fact that you can’t rejoin the battle is far more infuriating than the crash.
I have found that if you have a party member in the event with you, you can re-login, you’ll be in overflow, you can then click to join your party member in that server, and you can get back into your event.
It seems to me that a good fix would be to just save your spot in that server for 60 seconds (which it seems to do anyways), and when you re-login, you’ll be in the server that you were in when the crash happened.
As it is now, I’m terrified to get near the action. not for fear of dying, but for fear of crash and wasted everything: half hour of my life, expectations, progression, loot, achievements, fun.
Every time this happens, I tend to think about what other constructive things I could be doing besides GW2 that won’t lose my progress while I’m working on it.
75% of the rares I find sell for more as their salvaged material than as the item, even as lowest seller prices.
ex: rare Rampager’s Scepter of Life (I searched for rares, ordered by price, kept clicking ‘next’ until I got bored about 1/4 of the way through the pages and picked the shortest name :P)
sell price is 27s80c, after tax = 23s63c
if you salvage with Master Salvage Kit, you get 0.9 ectos and .8 Major Sigil of Life
ecto = 33s42c. 0.9 ecto = 30s7c
Major Sigil of Life = 1s86c. 0.8 Major Sigil of Life = 1s48c
cost of kit = 62c
Total income from salvaged materials = 30.93, after tax = 26s29c
that’s 2s66c more than just selling it. THEN, there’s the elder or ancient wood you get. I don’t even consider those, I just know it’s a bonus at the end of the week.
well… you can also do dailies and get obsidian shards that way.
481 obsidian shards = 12 months of laurels. If you split the costs to buy obsidian shards between laurels and karma, that’s 6 months. legendaries are supposed to be legendary.
prices to buy legendaries should go up soon…
when I first started, karma was worthless until well after getting to level 80. the reason is that anything that was at my level cost 4x as much karma as I had. There needed to be a karma nerf, this may of been too far, but they should also decrease the cost of karma items below level 80 to like 1/10 what they are.
Did I just get lucky? I thought I salvaged like 9 exotics and now I’m sitting on 17 Dark Matter. I even did select exotics and made a profit on top of the DM. I saw these as a non-issue. what’s the drop rate?
also, Mystic Salvage Kit has same return as Master (I normally use Master, but since they threw so many forge stones at me from achievements…)
ilr, it sounds like you’ve been using Journeyman’s or Fine. Unless ectos drop a LOT in price, I highly recommend not using those.
I can confirm that Scavenger’s Chasm does not give any empyreal. Guildie and I got all 12 orbs, opened all 3 chests, and all we got to show for it was salvage fodder.
yellows below level 68 should be TP’ed
yellows 68 and above: check the TP, if they sell for more than the price of ectos, sell on TP, otherwise, salvage with a Master Salvage Kit
white, blue, green, I salvage with infinite salvage kit. If I didn’t have that, I would use crude. the chance to get upgraded mats is so small (about 1/5 what the kit’s description says) that it’s not worth the higher price.
oranges should be similar to yellow, but look at how much the socket sells for as well, add that to ecto, and sell or salvage. If it’s socketed with something worth 2g or more, use Black Lion Salvage Kit instead of Master (if you choose to salvage).
people complain about over-priced lodestones and Anet needing to put a price limit on the TP, etc. now that they do something and the prices go down, people complain?
why truckloads?
you need 10 globs of dark matter per exotic. you can get that much from like 5 exotics on average. Maybe someone might want 2 ascended weapons for all 8 of their alts, that’s just 80 exotics. barely more than a bank tab.
