When I play sword/shield and greatsword in pvp, I use something like this.

http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fJAQNAseRjMdUFaZHmhwJagqABdlAJUfMYuUbA-TpBEwATOEAGOBA52fAwRAIbZACPAAA

You can use bull’s charge and sword burst to set up 100 blades and use shield #4 to set up final thrust burst on sword. I use bladetrail to cripple and immobilize (leg specialist trait) to set up bull’s charge since it misses so often.

I wouldn’t call it competitive, but it’s fun.

“I don’t want people to tell me how to play, so I’m going to tell them how to play” is what I’ve got from this thread.

The irony of it all is if you don’t want people to call you useless for the choices you make, don’t start a topic setting yourself up for it. Avoid groups that want to play the way they want, and find players that think like yourself. This is an issue people have forced upon themselves, don’t act like victims when the non-zerker side is just as toxic.

I wonder if it would work well with staff/lightning hammer. An extra static field and a knockback would be useful. The shield has a daze and pull too that could be useful.

Lay an unsteady ground > magnetic shield (pull) > magnetic surge > lightning field > lava font. Or something?

How to deal with DPS medi guards?

Just going to quote myself from the last two how to beat medi guardian threads.

edit: Just going to quote myself from the last thread.

To beat a medi guardian, you really need to know how it works. It’s like most match ups, the more information you have the better prepared you are to deal with it. As medi guardian is my main, I’ll point out a couple things.

First off, identify the weapons they’re using.

Greatsword: Leap of faith (blind)
Sword: Flashing Blade (blind) Zealot’s Defense (destroy projectile)
Focus: Ray of Judgement (blind) Shield of Wrath (3 blocks)
Mace: Protector’s Strike (single block)

Each are in themselves easy enough to spot and deal with. SoW is mostly used for dps, some guards will dodge instead of block to get the burst off. Use an AA to break through the blinds and blocks, don’t burn your cooldowns.

From there, 1 into radiance will give the guardian Justice is Blind. It’s on a 23-30s cooldown, so it’s going to be used for either highly telegraphed skills or to secure a stomp. There’s also Virtue of Courage which grants aegis, also used in a similar manner to VoJ.

Shelter in itself is probably the most troublesome block. It’s the only duration block on guardian, and if you keep unloading into it you will just give them might.

Just don’t let a medi guard choose his pace. If the fight is opened with a Judge’s Intervention burst, it only leaves one stun breaker that’s tied into condition cleanse. Apply the CC and immob, deal your damage and then kite them while waiting for cooldowns. A warrior should have no problem keeping up perma swiftness while crippling the medi guardian that has zero access to swiftness or 25% movement speed outside of runes.

Very helpful info! I have another question though, for my build which of these two master traits should I take? Defy pain or Spiked armor?

Defy Pain can be a very long 4 seconds to a medi guardian.

It just makes sense too. In sports, players get pumped (some adrenaline) from an inspiring speech. And in between plays, lets say in football, players keep their adrenaline and want to snap the neck of the quarterback or score an unbelievable touchdown. Plus for all you athletes out there, when you hurt yourself, you do not always feel it. Its because of adrenaline. That is until it wears off at home.

Best video game logic, ever.

I’d like to see a change to Battle Presence. It’s just not worth taking as a grandmaster in honor. I’d like to see it either combined with Purity of Body in the virtues line, or have it swapped with writ of the merciful. Maybe buff WoM into a good grandmaster trait, as we already have to spend 6 points in honor to get the three traits.

  • Resolute Healer seems to have a far longer cd than it should. Mesmers can cause a Feedback bubble every 10s, while ours merely absorbs. Our bubble can also knockback, preventing stomps, but I don’t think that justifies 50s longer to recharge. I’m not asking them to be similar, but the gap seems a bit large. (Both Feedback and Shield of Absorption have 40s cd, but these traits have a 50s gap. Mesmers can even further enhance their Feedback on rez from glamour traits.)

I think a 30s cooldown would be fair, seeing as team fight bunker should have more support access to reviving. It is a really strong skill though.

I’m just hoping for shield changes a some point, heck even torch. Please make shield viable! We are pigeon-holed into one offhand, focus, because it is so superior. The other 2 offhands being laughable other than some very situational occurrences. This has to change.

As long as it’s not just cooldown reductions on shield and is a well thought out change I can get behind that. Some people like the 5 skill, but the 4 really needs some help. Some sort of CC whether it be a knockdown/stun or a 10s cripple. Give an actual reason to take it over focus.

In a game of conquest, I’m usually more wary of a rabid a/t s/d ranger. The only times a zerk LB ranger is dangerous is when it’s well positioned in a team fight. Otherwise it’s simple enough to close the gap and eat them alive.

Closing the gap has never been easier either. One dodge for PBS, another for RF, and then they’re a sitting duck. Or are rangers not suppose to be worthy of using a dodge against?

You’re not suppose to start a thread on forums each time you’re outplayed.

With smaller more frequent patches coming, I thought it would be nice to open a discussion for thoughts on where the guardian should go. Ideally, we should be looking at the futures of both dps builds and support builds.

I’ll start things off with a look at the zeal trait line. Currently, beyond fiery wrath there’s not a whole lot to it. Split between symbol minors, spirit weapons and condition grandmasters. A couple changes that could make the line more appealing:

  • Drop Kindled Zeal down to a master trait. It does nothing for condi builds to trait into zeal only to be able to take one of the two as a grandmaster and have nothing else related to conditions in the line. Drop it back down to 10%.
  • Change Zealous Blade to scale with power. 25hp per hit is terrible and does nothing for sustain. As a master trait, it should be giving ~150hp/s.
  • Grandmaster worth taking in a damage build.

Well, I could keep listing off suggestions I’ve thought up but I’d really like to see what the guardian community can think up.

Adrenal Health: Resets to 0 out of combat or on miss.
Cleansing Ire: Resets to 0 out of combat or on miss.
Berserkers power: Damage buff reset to 0 upon out of combat or miss.
Heightened Focus: Reset to 0 upon out of combat or miss.

I am fine with the burst skills depleting adrenaline on miss. That much is fine and acceptable skill floor raising.

The fact that, as warrior stands, my adrenaline benefits are nixed the moment I leave combat, is a hit to the core mechanics. If anything the decay rate should be halfed, if not put back to where it was initially. The fact that adrenaline depletes immediately upon leaving combat removes the strategy complexity that once existed there.

Are people seriously complaining about not having access to cleansing ire when out of combat? Azure, you realize it’s not even possible to be OOC with conditions on you, right? And I’m sure that you’re really going to miss adrenal health when your HP is replenishing at 10x the rate. Do you even actually use heightened focus or berserker’s power in a pvp build?

The only two times I see a warrior inconvenienced about losing adrenalin out of combat is either when they disengaged using mobility or are bringing it to the next fight. Working as intended, as I see it.

I think this just goes to show the ineptitude of some thieves. If you rely on stealth as a crutch, you let your guard down once you enter it. A skillful thief will recognize that the ranger has initiated RF before and react properly.

I know most thieves don’t use smoke screen, but it might do you some good on your skill bar. Destroys projectiles and can be used to stack up stealth with shortbow or dagger. Try timing your stealth while RF is on cooldown or at least keep an eye out after you stealth.

engi is better at everything else can face most classes with ease with more cc and more damage

More cc yes, more damage well? Well let me put it this way who would a media guard or static/zerker engi.

Also which zerker spec between the 2 is stronger in the overall meta. As I said b4 nothing tanks better on point than a guard.

You missed the point. He was saying the engineer can tank better while providing more CC and damage. Guardians don’t put out very much in terms of damage while bunkering. So in that regard, engineer has the advantage.

I main a medi guardian myself, but the amount of CC I can put out on a zerker engineer is well worth the tradeoffs. Rifle/tool kit/net turret is a mean combination.

It’s not wise to make an all in one build and run between PvE and WvW with it. Traits and gear are easily swapped. You become too spread out in your vision and lack a real role.

Game Mode: Multi Team

in PvP

Shanks.2907

Thanks for the comments guys.

Unfortunately, creating new maps and gamemodes is not on their priority list, so it is best to suggest things that can apply to the current maps and pretty much conquest.

That’s why I thought this was a good game mode to add on. It’s conquest based, so the game mode itself isn’t changing. A new mode like capture the flag or assault would require new balancing of classes and heavy consideration on map layout.

From a design point of view, I don’t think it would be difficult to make a map for multi team. Looking at my rough paint sketch, you can see an effective and balanced layout.

Game Mode: Multi Team

in PvP

Posted by: Shanks.2907

Shanks.2907

How it works:

  • Conquest game mode with three teams of four players.
  • Each team has a home point along with a middle point to fight over.

Why it works:

  • Uses the concept of 3 way fights of WvW.
  • Promotes rotations and new strategies.
  • Same amount of players as a traditional conquest match.

With one extra point and another team the tactics of the game change. Do you send 3 to mid and keep 1 at home? Split up 2/2 while holding home and push far while letting the other teams fight at mid? Maybe send one out to decap while the other team is all in at mid?

Well, the main question I have is would you find this game mode fun? Conquest is kept to provide the structure and with smaller teams/more points zerg tactics are discouraged if you want to win.

Thoughts?

There’s a lot of things you can do with a meditation guardian. However, like you mentioned, there is a real lack of soft cc to help stick to the target. The lack of movement speed only makes it worst if you’re not using traveler runes. Pack runes are also a good choice as you get 175 power/125 precision and ~50% uptime in both fury and swiftness. I find it superior in a fight, but really slow moving point to point.

I would also take a closer look at the weapon sets. Greatsword, hammer, sword, scepter and mace all can work with a meditation build. Each of them have there own strengths and weaknesses.

Greatsword: Good burst with WW and a nice pull with BB (great for thieves in stealth). However those two are quite telegraphed and can be hard to land. Leap of faith is a good gap closer too with a blind.

Hammer: Mighty Blow is a good burst with a low cooldown and blast finisher. Best control for a guardian with the ring, knockback and immob. Painfully slow auto attack though, relying on the symbol to do a big chunk of damage.

Sword: One of our faster weapons. Good sustain on the auto attack and triggers VoJ passive on each chain. Teleport and blind is awesome too, works well paired with a greatsword. The third attack on AA though can be reflected, so be prepared.

Scepter: Smite can do some great damage if set up with the immob and combined with the burst of another weapon like WW or MB. The auto attack though misses as often as it hits, so you still want to keep yourself close to your target.

Mace: The symbol can offer you a bit of extra sustain, while still providing a good burst with protector’s strike. The auto attack can be slow and clunky though.

Focus: Pretty much a must have on a 1handed for meditation builds. SoW is a great burst but telegraphed, so you’ll have to time it right and set it up. Blinds on ray of judgement are great too.

Torch: Second choice, only used if you’re using two 1handed weapons. It gets some extra burning in for fiery wrath uptime and the throw does some decent damage.

Hope this gives you a bit of insight.

I have no idea if this would be hard for ArenaNet to make it happen, but how about splitting the current unblockable into Unblockable and Unreflectible and giving our Sword Wave this new unreflectible skill fact? The new unreflectible could maybe also apply to Phoenix, Mirror Blade and Ether Clone (so you can’t reflect the phoenix/clone creation but can block the damage).

This is one of the best ideas I’ve heard for the AA chain. Unblockable would solve the problem while not taking up a ton of resources reworking the skill itself. It wouldn’t improve the cone having difficulty landing at certain angles, but not eating half your melee damage would be a great start. And the skill can keep it’s appeal of counting three strikes toward the VoJ passive.

Though it would be a hard sell adding cripple to AA #2 with an unblockable AA #3.

Off the wiki.

Due to a diverse skill system allowing for a multitude of vastly different character builds, every profession in Guild Wars 2 is capable of fitting each of the combat roles (damage, support, control) or are sometimes even the result of a combination of them.

By the very concept of the game guardians should be more than just support. In terms of the state of those three right now, I would rate them B/A-/C- respectively. We have a place in high end pvp using support builds, but I certainly can’t say we belong there trying anything else at the moment. Damage role needs a few QoL changes in general while support role needs to keep up with the power creep in this game. I think buffing the control role will in turn help the damage role out quite a bit.

That being said, I think support plays a large part of what this class does. It’s part of the guardian’s identity, though I don’t think it should be it’s only role. Through traits, a guardian should have the option to play support, damage or a hybrid of the two.

Why after 2 years still no move speed trait?

in Guardian

Posted by: Shanks.2907

Shanks.2907

Let me try a different way … is there another issue people have with the class where a lack of runspeed is the symptom and not the illness? For me there is no argument; if the concept is team support, runspeed is not needed. So why does everyone want it?

And from your point of view, you’re right. There is no need for movement speed on a support guardian. Staff #3 does a well enough job at keeping a bare amount of swiftness up, and beyond that there’s a team around it that’s also giving off swiftness buffs. In that regard, guardian can still perform as well as if it were self-sufficient.

But that’s not the only role a guardian can play. Meditation guardians play a completely different way than a support guardian. Where sticking to your target to put melee pressure is crucial. You can’t just sit in the middle of a point spamming 1 on staff. Fundamentally they play completely different, and with that they have different needs.

You’ve completely focused on support guardian for the entirety of this discussion. I can understand that movement speed on a guardian would be a useless buff for a support guardian and a waste of resources in your point of view. But to play it off like it breaks our core concept is what is really disingenuous.

Traveler runes are okay and all, but not as the only option. They put a dent on the dps and limit build diversity. You can only choose 1 rune set, while there are 14 trait points. And as build defining runes have become it’s a slap in the face to be dependent on them for something every class has access to.

Also disengage is never about constant speed, specially so when everybody and their mother already moves at that speed. Is about CC and displacement(be it in the form of stealth, teleports, jumps or what ever have you). Which we have neither.

This. Movement speed does not serve as the great escape tool that a teleport or rush skill does. It would have little to no effect on the escape skills we already have. Equipping traveler runes or gaining swiftness from an ally doesn’t make us escape artist all of a sudden. Case and point, look at how well necro does at disengaging with all of it’s swiftness and movement speed traits.

Spamming VoJ works pretty well if the zerg is doing well in the first place. Blind spams and all the might sharing is always good. The 4s of burning you give 5 allies each spam adds up to 20s total each time. Along with the unrivaled healing output for yourself. Each VoJ is ~1k healing, so I would take it over force of will. Another build to consider is 0/0/6/4/4 to pick up absolute resolution.

If you do run the VoJ spam build, I would suggest binding AA, VoJ and auto loot to three keys right next to each other. You will be pressing the three of them, a lot, and all at the same time.

You’ve certainly put the support guardian on a pedestal Obtena. The very existence of meditation utilities is proof enough in the concept outside of support. While shouts and consecrations can be used for the team’s benefit, a meditation guardian is in nature very selfish. Built for 1v1/2v2 encounters and not larger team fights.

I’ve never understood why you’ve been so fixated on concept either. More than one class can do support well, why should that one class be limited to only support?

You hit most of the points I would make Ragnar.

A rework of the last chain of AA would be great. As it is, if someone pops reflect it effectively shuts down a melee weapon. You can either eat half your dps or stand around until weapon swap is up. So instead of 3 projectiles, maybe just one hard hitting slash that does nearly the same damage but has cripple. Warrior and Thief sword AA do cripple so it kind of fits too.

If not a cripple on AA, it would at least be very appreciated on Flashing Blade.

But to the main point of the thread. Yes, Zealot’s Defense would work much better if you could move while casting it. It’s easy enough to avoid as it is now, and allows the target to create more space to kite the guardian.

I would also take a look at the meta wiki. It’s not to say that you have to use those builds, but it gives you some insight on the roles these classes are currently filling. Look through the traits, weapons and tips given for the build. Again, you might find something fun.

Why after 2 years still no move speed trait?

Shanks.2907

Both soft cc and mobility are sorely needed on a dps guardian.

There are good ways to do it. Cripple on movement skills (flashing blade, leap of faith) have been good suggestions in the past. For swiftness we could use high application low duration traits that are perfect for not being able to disengage but still hold some combat mobility. Or a conditional movement speed trait.

There are 8 classes in this game, 7 of which have access to movement speed or swiftness in traits. It cannot be a class concept to the only one with ZERO access through traits. And what’s worst is the two forms of swiftness the guardian has, shouts and SoS, are tied more to defensive builds and don’t fit at all in a medi build.

And people will take anything anet says to validate themselves. For some reason, the merciful intervention decision to only port to allies so guardians don’t have disengage was interpreted as having something to do with movement speed. And if anet really thought that way they wouldn’t have dropped the cooldown on retreat. Problem is, it’s a band-aid that doesn’t fix the core issue.

Maybe their class mechanic could be “outcry” that you build up like life force or adrenalin, but when used gives you buffs that last until the bar depletes. Base buffs plus offensive or defensive buffs from trait lines, that can range from regen/stability to % damage increases/etc.

In a 1v1 against a d/d ele, I find it’s best to go all in. The standard 2/6/6/0/0 sw/f sc/t build has given me the best results. Searing flames can be useful if the boon removal gods smite might. That trait really could use a buff (2 every 10s or 1 every 5s) but I digress.

It really helps if you can land SoW. Generally it’s easy enough to dodge being so telegraphed though. If you use chains of light with judge’s intervention it can dramatically increase your chances. Drop a smite at your feet and AA with sword along with air/fire sigils after. Like mentioned above, the longer the fight goes on the less chance you have of winning.

You can also preload torch #4 for extra burning (10% damage on fiery wrath) and good damage and more burning on throw. Sigil of Rage on sc/t helps to get more smites in, along with more sword AA after you swap.

90% crit chance with fury and right hand strength. Near perma fury, ~50% swiftness and 30% damage multipliers. It’s the truest sense of high risk/high reward. Lay off pressure for a second, especially in a team fight, and you’ll get rolled.

I’d really like to see an axe for guardians. They really need a condi option, and all current weapons have specific roles they already fill. I wouldn’t want any of them to be converted.

Engineer could use melee pressure with a mace. It would be nice to utilize shield in a power build, and not be required to use tool kit for any type of melee.

However, I don’t think weapons should be added for the sake of adding them. The new weapons should be introduced to fill a roll the class doesn’t have access to, and fixing old weapons should take priority if possible. Like the warrior doesn’t need a new ranged weapon, just make the rifle viable.

Yeah, I would suggest to everyone to rebind the keys for your own preferences. The default layout is far from optimal. Might take a while to get used to the new layout, but it will be worth it if stuck with. Here’s how mine looks.

S left strafe, D right strafe, Mouse 4 and 5 are forward and backwards
F E R G V for attack skills (respectively)
B N and M for utilities (thumb)
4 3 5 2 for profession mechanics (yes, they are placed by ease of reach of what I use most often and not in order)
W heal, Q elite, T swap, A dodge, Z jump, C interact and space auto loot. (space is set to auto loot so it won’t interrupt my utility skills if accidentally pressed by my thumb)

How you select where to put certain skills is all dependent on ease of use for the player. Attacks don’t have to be lined in order but rather where they can be accessed the best at any given moment. Someone else trying to use my keybinding might be overwhelmed, but to me they fit like a glove.

I also have a bunch of rubber/tall keys on certain skills to give my keyboard structure.

Oh, and all interface keys (map, TP, inventory, etc) have been relocated to my number pad.

Diva's Condi Signet Build - Video Added

Looks like a fun build. I’ve always been wondering about an effective way to utilize stone heart. Like a zerk conjure build, never tried though.

Earth line has so many good things in it for this build. I wonder how obsidian focus (+290 toughness while channeling) would work with the near perma AA channel. There’s signet mastery, serrated stones and elemental shielding too to consider along with strength of stone. Only two spots for five good choices.

I also wonder how melandru runes would work. Condi cleansing and stun breaks are certainly a weakness, but would it be worth losing a bit of condi damage. Was also thinking of krait runes to bump up the bleed duration for a little less damage on tick.

There’s probably a sliding scale on tradeoffs between condi damage output and survivability. Too much survivability and you no longer have the condi pressure to win a fight, and even if you stack up physical resistance you’re still weak against conditions.

Honestly, at this point I’d say that no sort of cooldown reduction is worth not changing the functionality of the skills. They’re just too subpar in comparison to those of focus and even torch for any given situation.

I quite agree with this. A cooldown reduction is not the fix the shield needs. Though it would be nice and it really should be lower, it would only be a band-aid. The skills themselves are not worth taking, not just the long cooldowns that they are on.

If you’ve ever seen a battle anime imagine the trope where the non-magical brawler type suddenly moves faster than the enemy can see, It’s like that. While as far as the game is concerned you just teleported, but from player’s perspective you just moved really fast.

I would of really liked this outfit to be unisex for all races. Am I the only one who wants my female human guardian to have style like a boss?

Whenever people suggest completely reworking the Shield I feel the need to remind them that the knockback on the Shield is actually really good. The cooldown is just too long and the skill bugs out occasionally.

I love the shield for that alone when in push/support mode. I just don’t like the focus and how it blocks better or the mace. Seems odd to me and then tie in shield 4 which is weak in my opinion, rework is in order. In theory anyway. Doesn’t mean I’m right by any means.

Well, the focus is used as much for dps as it is for the blocks. In an offensive build, I’ll dodge roll to avoid blocking. It’s too bad that it’s split between offensive and defensive, really the only offhand worth taking.

The shield however, really needs a block. Some sort of duration block that can actually be used defensively. I’d like to see #5 put up the bubble for the team while holding a duration shield block for the guardian. Along with a knockdown on #4, I think the shield could be a viable choice for both bunker and dps.

Still, KD on a teleport is a bad idea.

Make it work like it should. I also like the Leap idea, but that is not going to happen.

Indeed, the problem with a KD on a teleport skill is that there’s no counter play. Though you can link banish and judge’s intervention together, it’s not quite the same.

With BC, even though it’s probably going to miss on it’s own you still have the option to waste a dodge. There’s counter play available. I agree that it probably won’t happen, but the ‘swoop like’ leap does seem to keep the counter play intact while making the skill more viable.

Adrenalin decay is the perfect penalty for (ab)using mobility and resetting fights.

Working as intended, I’d say.

A knockdown on a teleport might be a little bit too much. I like the idea of changing BC into something like swoop though. I don’t know if it’s the leap, but swoop is usually pretty accurate. Fixing the reliability of BC while still leaving the skill intact is the best solution.

Oh and this. If you connect BC and are facing the wrong direction, you don’t actually have to manually turn yourself around. Just hit the skill you want to use (100b, etc) and you’ll automatically turn towards the target as long as you’re not holding any movement keys.

First “the OP” is a woman. Second, your insults are meaningless. Third I own an 80 ranger. I’m sick of being hammered by a cheat weapon and I want it brought back into normal range.

Fix Ranger? Why? ANET has already given your class a game breaking edge. What possible need do you have for any work? I for one hope Ranger is relegated to the back burner for a couple years.. like Mesmer was.

I’ve noticed this misconception you’ve had. Time played (aka pvp rank/profession level) does not equal skill or understanding. These things are not gated by skill, they’re gated by time. In two years after launch, players of all caliber will rank up and level multiple professions to 80. Don’t misunderstand me, the game needs players of all levels. However, to quote your ranks and levels as a testament to your skill is more than likely showing otherwise.

Also, Rangers WERE on the back burner for ages. But you being a level 80 ranger should know that yes?

I’d be surprised if anyone actually took OP’s threads seriously considering his track record.

It is not at all evident that Ranger longbow is OP, what is evident however is that OP has a vested interest in trying to get Rangers nerfed, as he is a bad Mesmer player who has chosen to ignore the vast array of techniques that can be used to hard counter longbow Rangers. There are videos and lengthy threads explaining how to tackle the greater longbow DPS, but OP is clearly too blinded by his own personal vendetta against rangers to pay attention. I think it’s a case of, ‘Rangers are harder to defend against than they were and I am too lazy to adapt my play style to take that into account so I want them nerfed’.

Thread track record says it all.

Those 50 posts of QQ on the forums could have been invested in actually playing the ranger with LB. It’s l2p 101, play the class that you’re having trouble against to learn it’s mechanics.
