I have played GW1, completed every campaign and enjoyed the end-game for a long time. The PvP system in GW1 just was one of the best at that time.

I bought GW2 because I enjoyed GW1 so much, because it was for me one of the best MMO’s I had ever played, even though the graphics became outdated and the system slightly. I think I would still buy GW2 if I had to make the decision over, but I wished they listened to their playerbase. So many people make magnificent suggestions, but so few get listened to.

What I would be interested to know is why you would choose GW2 over GW1. Personally if GW1 got updated graphics and 3D maps so you can jump on stuff I would definitely choose GW1 over GW2 today. Then they could’ve added all those jump puzzles and stuff in GW1 instead. So, what makes GW2 better for you?

I agree to this, if GW1 had the same graphics, some better UI etc, I would choose it over GW2. GW1 was unique as a MMO, because it worked through story missions. The whole game was about these missions and you as a hero were the centrum of it all. GW2 lacks this incredibly. The personal story is a meager reflection of GW1’s story, and it is actually only a side element, very stereotype and badly written. On top, in GW1 money was hardly necessary for anything in the game.

PvE: missions could be completed on different difficulty, so you didn’t get forced to get max gear and max gear itself was rather cheap all together.

PvP: you didn’t even need gear or leveling up for that. Also the Kurzick-Luxon conflict in Factions was a very nice addition to the PvP system, still not needing any gearing or whatsoever.

I find this thread funny with all the haters trying to mock the game as hard as they can.

And i find this funny too, because of people (mostly haters) aske anet to show off their big numbers. And now, when we got the answer, people:
-don’t believe them,
-think those are advertisments,
- that they are too small,
- that even with alive, healthy, think that community of this game is dead.

You know what i’m going to tell you ?

You are wasting your time, dear hater. Go do something for christ sake, by posting in this thread you didn’t gain anything. And if you think that your efforts damaged, somehow, GW2, you are totally wrong.

In response to this comment, the only thing I can do is sigh.

Criticism is something developers are supposed to learn from and should be grateful for. It means there are people who care enough about their game, that they are willing to spend time to shout out what they like/dislike/think should be improved. There isn’t a single comment out there that is completely made up out of negative criticism, they always state what might be a good solution to the problem, which in turn should – theoretically – help the developers.

I’d also like to add that if you think this isn’t an advertisement on Anets part, you are terribly naive.

I have played GW1, completed every campaign and enjoyed the end-game for a long time. The PvP system in GW1 just was one of the best at that time. The story itself always encouraged you to go on, and it was always nice to see what happened next, ever a surprise and very much like reading an exciting fantasy novel.

Still, I think GW1 was a better game (for it’s time) than GW2 at this moment.

Sadly my money is that they will be a large advantage. This is based on how anet has handled things in the past (poorly). Being forced to pve to enjoy wvw is a bad idea.

My goal is to eliminate the latter scenario. And I promise to do as much as I can to meet that.

Now you’re saying that, but you know it’s bull kitten.

The whole focus of the game needs to be orientated away from GOLD and toward FUN.
Gold makes Arenanet happy… but it doesn’t make the players happy, because everything is about it. Instead, drop “gold” and “money” as a whole, currencies shouldn’t play a major role in any game, cause they are associated with “jobs” and “chores” and people play a game to relax, not to stress out over chores they have to do.

Dynamic events will provide this, because you don’t have to work, you just play, succeeding in missions and seeing a world develop before your eyes, possibly getting to know characters in it very well, seeing them change and grow, and seeing your own story grow all the way. This is what makes a world living, and what keeps it living, for players. There’s no need to grind and farm… the story just takes it way, and you can do things to influence your role in it.

Rewards in this should be possible weapons from killing a specific one-time enemy, or getting a weapon from an npc who died on the battlefield, getting a new quiver from the cache of some rich player after you broke into his estate etc?

I know what you think… villains? Yup, I think players should be allowed to pick their role completely themselves, so if you want to go about stealing from other players, and risking penance / punishment for it, it’s your life, it’s your story. No problem for casuals either, you don’t feel like logging in for a week? Come back after, the world has developed a little, but it will go on

ArenaNet has such a promising playerbase and I think it’s time they start listening to it, considering their ideas and seeing how successful they can be if they adapt to the player’s wishes. After all… the player knows what sucks and what doesn’t.

I read this

I think the game became worse.

I think GW2 was released as something with a lot of flaws, but also with a lot of potential.

Take Dynamic Events, for example. Sure, many are – boring, telling no story, with no impact in the world. But some are amazing, showing how they could be used to make a truly dynamic world rich with small stories happening all around the players.

But then ArenaNet learned that players don’t care that much about dynamic events, unless they can be used to farm (even if farming requires people to exploit the event). So instead of improving the DE design, and making more of the story-based events, ArenaNet has focused on the opposite: using shallow events with no impact on the world, borrowing mechanics from other places, and repeating the resulting DEs all over the map.

Just take a look at the invasions. The Aetherblade event is just a copy of the “drive away the Aetherblades” events we had to unlock the baloons, which is probably why minions count in a per-kill basis, while pirates are under a per-event basis. The invasions are the same event repeated in multiple maps, just like the Instigator events in Southsun were the same event repeated twice in the same map.

Imagine if the game were like that at release. Instead of the Claw of Jormag, the Shatterer and Tequatl, we would have the same generic dragon minion spawning in three places in the world, using the exact same mechanics in all the 3 places.

This is not an improvement. This is ArenaNet wasting all the potential DEs had, while using events as an easy way to make players farm.

The same could be said about all other aspects of the game. In exchange for minor features (what did the wallet really add to the game? Other than freeing some inventory slots, it’s not really that much of an improvement), we got things that are either making the game worse (champion boxes) or wasting its potential.

Once upon a time, ArenaNet boasted that they would take a hard stance against exploiters. Then they lost a lot of players, and now they are afraid to ban the exploiters, fearing they would lose more players than they can afford to throw away.

I agree, but sadly messages like yours are being ignored by ArenaNet. You have written this very orderly and logically consistent, thank you for putting it so clear and expressing what I had in mind.

I’d like to add that for me GW2 was supposed to be a neverending, ever evolving world, which threw challenges at you and asked you to act, or else the consequences for the world would be grave. Instead of using dynamic events throughout the world that would change the world, based on if they were succeeded or failed by the players, they simply threw them in as a world-filler, always the same things being required of you and no real challenge involved.

Instead they started with “Living story”, a term so abused in this case, that it’s hard to tell what it even means anymore. The story doesn’t seem to do anything at all, it doesn’t matter what the player does… the story goes on without change even if nobody fought the a) Molten Alliance b) Aetherblades c) Holographics d) More Aetherblades e) Pointkitten sses in QJ f) Scarlet…

The example I like to use for what it should have been is the currently existing Centaur Event chain in Kessex Hills. At a certain moment the centaurs start to build a bridge, the players destroy the bridge and so on. The problem is, the event isn’t hard at all. Downleveled aswell as on-level players can succeed without difficulty.

But instead, what if the event was really hard and required you to rally players all over the world, because if you didn’t… the centaurs might become a real threat and change the world forever. They raid the villages in kessex hills, destroying structures (that’s right, destroyed permanently). This could set a whole of missions in motion. Players needing to recruit NPC soldiers to help them in the battle against centaurs, big battles that mean something. If the centaurs get through they permanently change the world, eventually possibly threatening trade routes (cutting off black lion trading?) and permanently killing npcs, buildings, mobs… maybe invading the capital of Kryta, Divinity’s Reach itself? Also, skill should be a major part of this, not the mindless zerging we see now. Depending on your ability to face of enemies alone (that’s right, the reward scales with the difficulty), you earn ‘allegiance points’ and can climb into a world system, becoming a noble with your own estate, or a thief that works for a local thief guild.

Of course this is a dynamic event… but one on a HUGE scale. This is what Guild Wars 2 needed… not the silly Living Stories we get right now.

If the 23,470,844 Dolyak caravan kills were divided so that maximum number of players would have the Yakslapper title, then 23 people out of 3,500,000 would have the title. Something to think about.

Or it could mean nobody has the title and everyone only killed 7 dolyaks, which is not true… I think the average WvW player has 1k-ish dolyak kills. Which means only 25000 people ever tried WvW?

Welcome to the new guild wars.. where we champion farm, LS farm, and AP farm and no longer have fun.

That about states it. :P

Welcome to the moronic world of brainlessness, where you suck if you don’t have gold, and if you don’t like gold, you suck cause there’s nothing else to do in the game than farming it.

I feel your pain OP. I have never once gotten an exotic weapon drop. Only one time have I gotten a good rare drop – still not a precursor. The few other rares I ended up with were junk that weren’t worth anything. I give up on drops and BL chests. Period. Total garbage. I play only because I want to at this point. No legendaries for me… no insta-gold drops. Just fun. When I stop having fun, I’m outta here.

I stopped having fun the moment they introduced the ridiculous champion farms. Have been playing other games since then, and tbh, I wish I had quit way earlier. The game became more and more of a chore and that’s not the way it’s supposed to be.

Have you considered not farming them? It sounds like your need to accumulate massive amounts of useless gold is a personal issue.

You’re forced to. As a all-round player I like to do everything in the game, being WvW, SPvP and PvE, but if you don’t follow the mass that is farming like crazy, you miss out on content because you need armour etc. Apart from that it isn’t possible not to farm cause the only content that doesn’t embrace grinding at this moment are jumping puzzles and exploration. And even that got rather grindy cause arenanet wants you to complete hearts all the time and achievements are through it all. Another problem is that it’s close to impossible to find non-grinders.

Edit, i would like to add that it seems like GW2 is a game all around money. If you don’t like to mind money, that’s tough for you, you have to farm because money means everything. It’s like a virtual world of capitalism. It sickens me.

People originally complained that F&F was too slow

It was too slow for what it actually brought into the game. Seriously… a couple of NPC’s, a new instance, a karma box? Did they work 1 month on THAT? Same goes for Living story at this moment, the content is total rubbish (bad story, bad rewards, grind/farm…) and they spend waaaaay too much time on it.

People seem to see through smoke color glasses, glass half empty with poison inside. I’m itching to get home to play it at the end of my work’s trip and all I see in the forums during my trip are people who spits at the game and wants others to see it that way too. Appalling to say the least.

@OP: Nice work on the video by the way.

Forums are like 60% people who are tired of the game and want an avenue to rant and convince others not to play the game (I laugh at all those attention-seeking ’I’m quitting’ posts..if you don’t like the game just quit)

And the other 35% of people are those who enjoy the game and are toiling away here while at work (me).

The other 5% are people who enjoy the game and actually provide glowing feedback. The majority of the playerbase who like the game are doing just that, playing and enjoying it right now.

That’s quite wrong. I have been posting on the forums since launch and most of my posts were game-improvement suggestions. Sadly arenanet doesn’t care what the players ask for, they just give us worthless crap and we’re supposed to be thankful for them working on that instead of stuff that actually would make the game better. That’s why there are so many negative comments on the forums nowadays and I can’t say I dissaprove. The way GW2 is developing, it is going to become WoW2 instead.
Even if the playerbase grows, who says any of them aren’t brainless idiots?
The point being, most of the dedicated people who like to play a game and have a good attitude will just give up on it, and the playerbase will be a bunch of zombies, basically a dead game.

WvW should have a lot more impact. As it is now, the player doesn’t care about defending his homeland, because nothing happens if it gets razed down. The keeps still stand there if the enemy has them and all in all there isn’t much reason to retake them. Retaking them isn’t hard either, cause it only requires a zerg of 60 people who all press skill #1.

Additional?
PvP should be more about matching a fixed number of equally valiant players who can engage in a long duration fight and allowing the winner a permanent reward, such as an upgraded PvP team hall.

and i predict that this game will die just liek SWTOR if u dont change your content politics, cuz it went really bad i mean REALLY BAD, its boring as it is right now, really boring and repeatative, same task just another disguise… kill this mob xxx times, use item y xxx times, i mean cmon guys really???
its 2013 this stuff is outdated if someone ver played an mmo before gw2 is juzst liek a mix of rift, vindictus and (insert any rvr game).
Implement player created contend, just like in Neverwinter Online for example.
Well limit loot and exp to prevent a dungeon with a chest filled with 10k gold and full of ascendend gear.
and for sake of your income, sell tokens, just liek them for selfmade arenas, to keep the dungeon up and such u know?
Just start realising that u went the wrong route, and this game will last for so many years and will keep selling, cuz tbh i promoted gw2 in the beginning but since 2 months, i dont recommend it to anyone anymore.

I will clarify what you mean.

  • The game has become a repetition of tasks
  • The only reason you do tasks is because you get “shinies”
  • Shinies don’t actually make you happy, because after you have shiny #1, you want shiny # and so on, in a very profitable (for arenanet) cycle of “farm zeh shinies”.

Solution:

  • One-time content (meaning, no repetition of the same antique kitten all over)
  • Real impact on the world
  • Playing for FUN

=> Quit GW2

I completely agree with the OP. Personally I have stopped playing GW2… for two and a half weeks now? I, too, was extremely bored and “burned out” by the tasks/achievements/dailies/monthlies, … you name it. The game is at this very moment a chore and everything that was fun about it, became a grinding nightmare.

I didn’t come to this forum just to flame on Arenanet, but this story has been going around the forums since the start of the dailies/monthlies, the fractals and the living story. The moment they implemented those the whole game gradually became one giant freakin’ taskitten

pt playing because of a “it might get better” feeling. But now, one day I totally had enough of it. Tons of people have been complaining about arenanets orientation with this game, and yet instead of fixing it… they add more grind content with each patch.
So I quit. I loved this game, as a GW1 veteran, but it just doesn’t make up to it’s name and I think arenanet will loose more and more players if they continue on this downward path into grind/farm/no-brains/chore etc.

I play games because they’re fun, that’s why they’re called “games”, I don’t play them so I can frustrate myself at farming money and noticing that I still need to farm more and more.

I think anet just forgot how to write lore. And Is going down the blizzard path.

Anet was never big about lore. I remember in GW1 that it was the GW community who developed the lore in Tyria and Anet simply expound that their own way.

Gw1 had more story than this part of game …

GW1 prophecies alone had 10x better lore than the whole of GW2

If you’ve ever seen a zerg, then you’ve seen what the living story has to offer.

Which means it has nothing to offer. Which in turn means that each patch contains nothing but rubbish, which leads to the statement that there is actually no new content being added that offers anything… which makes it hardly possible to continue playing this game if you want to do something that doesn’t feel mindbreaking.

I feel that GW2's philosophy is flawed

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Sirendor.1394

I’ll add in my own opinion about this, as a player of GW1 (prophecies, factions, nightfall and eye of the north) and a “since headstart” veteran of GW2.

Personally I feel arenanet has laid the stress for their game on loot and rewards waaaaaaaaay too much. In guild wars 1 the biggest part of your time went to completing the story. In guild wars 1 the story was in fact the main occupation.
It was always interesting, incredibly challenging (man how many times I have failed certain missions). For those who liked even harder content there was the hard mode.
In guild wars 1 I constantly wanted to complete more and more story missions, wanting to know “what came after” and always being amazed and pleased with the results of my deeds.

Completing the story granted you most of your equipment aswell, enough for you to succeed in the story. The PvP didn’t require you to use your own gear, but allowed you special PvP gear, with unlockable skills and runes allowed through skill points and allegiance tokens.

In guild wars 2… all of this has dissapeared. The game lacks a main “stress”, because the story is incredibly dull, stereotype and not challenging at all. Contrary to it’s predecessor, GW2 also forces the players into farming and grinding. Why? Because farming and grinding proves the only way to gather “gold”, a currency that is needed throughout the whole game for virtually everything. Everything is based on having the best gear and the only end-game exists in gathering “achievements”, that mean nothing because they don’t impact the game and skins, a cheap idea on Anets part to garantee that players keep busy farming gold for them.

On top of that, I wouldn’t have a problem with a “gold-based” game, if they balanced the rewards. Instead of balance we get zergs killing champions in PvE and killing players in WvW with 50-100 people and they get better rewards with their pointless grinding than an explorer who delves into the deep or someone who likes to do jumping, or someone who likes to do PvP in a non-zerg way.

In that way… you get forced to farm and grind, and thus “work” instead of play. And the only goal of this “job” is farming money to get skins allowing you to say “I rock”, while the gold-farming in itself isn’t fun and doesn’t contribute to gaming.

I would like to add: this is not just some QQ from a newbie who isn’t able to afford gear or skins. I have leveled 8 level 80s in my gw2 time and didn’t have a problem to get my gear/skins, but only after farming cof days on end. I believe that isn’t the way a game should be, and consequently have quit for over a week now, since the reveal of yet another grind-paradise.

You won’t see legendary armor any time soon, you will see Ascended Armor in 2013 for sure though, yes.

I’m sorry Colin, I know it’s a business and $$$ must be made, but you Arenanet guys have lost your minds—I’m sorry… Please do not call this Guild Wars. I suggest you rename the game immediately. I may only be one guy, but all I do is log on to GW2 and run around Lions Arch for 5 minutes. With this new model, there is nothing in this game that I’m looking forward to. I’m in the process of looking for a new game, although I admit, with limited success. GW2 could of been the next big thing—I personally don’t see it going anywhere in its current state. Good luck.

I’ve turned towards single-player games for the time being. In a few months we’ll have tons of new games coming out and IF arenanet hasn’t changed into a huge gear and farming treadmill by then, who knows, might come back.

Anet has been killing open world for a long time now. The living world does that perfectly yes, but also daily boss chests. Now the Champ loot. All of these remove people from zones other than the few that have the new LW or have good champ trains.

The world was their strongest asset and they have been ignoring it instead of building on it.

because of the grindy and easily exploitive nature of this months update, the TP is experiencing a major inflation issue, just wait a little longer and still save and it will drop.

I don’t think this inflation is going to be temporary. I can’t help but feel the developers are going to keep pandering to the hardcore “MOAR LOOT” farmers, meaning influx of new gold will far outweigh the capable of gold sinks to remove it.

Exactly, and those people are breaking the game for others. I for one have stopped playing the game a few days after the “glorious” queen’s pavilion farm. This isn’t a game anymore, it’s a grind.

Hidden passages are only new and hidden until you discover then. After the community has found all the passages, people will figure out the fastest and easiest passage to complete the dungeon, and that’s the only thing they’ll be running.

I doubt this very much because every path gives a one-time daily reward at the moment, making anything better than repeating one path.

Sirendor.1394

Hey everyone… I’d like to find out if there is anyone out there who feels like dungeons should be more than they are… that they should be truly explorable…

What I mean by this is that you can find new hidden passages and dependent on the way you choose… you discover new passages. Get more choices to find other passages. I have seen a very detailed post about this, but I fear it is lost in the huge suggestion thread.

The idea was the following.

In the beginning you get a few open ways. We shall call the begin 1, begin 2, begin 3.
From begin 1 you can choose to enter middle 1,2,3; from begin 2 path you can choose to enter middle 4,5,6; from begin 3 you can choose to enter middle 7,8,9.
Each middle then again has 3 options to choose from. In this way you create a huge number of explorable passages, each with a possibly unique boss and unique boss drop.
Also, no spoilers. Let the player discover his way without giving clues.

A Memorable Personal Story?

in Personal Story

Posted by: Sirendor.1394

Sirendor.1394

I should say, feel free to comment on the post.
- Have you felt the same way, or were you pleasantly surprised at the Personal Story?

I felt the same way. The story was rather dull, the personages dropped out as if they were part of a cheap soap where they refused to pay an actor anymore and mysteriously let them die, also very very stereotype. This is not at all the level of story I would have expected after playing Guild Wars 1.

- Do you have any ideas for improving it?
Personally I think they should just start from scraps and make it something really memorable this time. I also think they should tie forging your legendary weapon to the personal story, allowing you customization of the weapon, based on the choices you make during the story. More alternatives, more choices, more realism.

- Are there things you’d like to point out?
That the story at this point is something nobody even cares to complete.

- What did they do well and not so well in your opinion?
