Lol are you guys kidding me.. if ascended gear is so hard to get, then don’t get it? There’s nothing wrong with adding currency to get new content, it’s pretty standard in fact. Guild missions do take some kind of huge amount of players to get the basic stuff though.. that’s the only real issue here imo. Not easy to fix though!
I think the problem is that there is clearly a preferred way to get the ascended gear and if you don’t want to do it that way you have to pay through the nose. Don’t want to grind fractals, spend 35 days grinding dailies. Can’t do guild missions, do 40 dailies and pay 13+g in ectos.
You are focusing too much on a certain part of the game. All you need in this game is a set of masterwork gear and then you can tackle the entire game. Just don’t try to 1vs1 in WvWvW, that’ll doom you.
Or masterwork in WvWvW, which provides the same effect.
Because most of us have roughly the same skill level, 5-10% changes in stats can make a huge difference.
You are leaving out precision. Crit damage is meaningless if you don’t crit.
The easiest way to compare (no math required) is enter your build into http://gw2buildcraft.com/calculator/elementalist/
Look at the damage and survivability pane on the rights.
Make a change and see what happens.
I started on the TC and was afraid I’d never get back if I left.
happened in different dungeon already….
first run with guard, 60 token…. second run with mesmer, 30 token……. third run with warrior, 30 token…. and only ~12s happened a few times now, probably 500 token +gold r missing…. still no fix? come on….
Either it’s a bug or this work around is. You can avoid the problem leaving the party. Switching characters. And rejoining the party. Then you should get the full 60 on the new character.

If you haven’t put them on, are they account bound? If they aren’t sell them on the black lion trading post. If they are account bound then you can salvage them are throw them into the mystic forge.
Base damage taken is some number / armor. Where armor is your gear + your toughness. http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Damage
So each point you add to toughness has less effect than the previous one. I have seen advice not to try WvWvW with less than 2600 for a warrior. But a glass cannon warrior (with about 2100 armor) can kill very fast.
It comes down to how squishy you want to be. I think 2000 is glass cannon. 2500 in the middle, and 3000 is a tank.
All I can recommend is show up very early. I’ve never had a problem getting in 15 minutes before a window.
You can change, it just costs money.
Also, I should point out that it doesn’t necessarily get better elsewhere. In T2 we were getting our kitten handed to us week after week. So we feel your pain, even if we are now one of the ones inflicting it.
You can only use ruby orbs on armor. You can use the exquisite ruby jewels on amulets, earrings, rings, and the back piece.
Warrior – The class that Anet loves
Thief – The class that is broken (for the better) and can’t be fixed
Ranger – The class that is broken (for the worse) and can’t be fixed
Ha. Awesome.
Each class is pretty different. I would chose
Warrior or Guardian (in your face playstyle)
Thief or Mesmer (confusing and misdirecting playstyle)
Elementalist (pure melee or pure ranged playstyle depending on weapon choice)
I quick way to increase your power is to stick Exqusite Ruby Jewels in your trinkets. You didn’t say so I’m assuming that you have rampagers jewelry.
I’m assuming you’re gear looks like this. http://gw2buildcraft.com/calculator/warrior/?8|1.1g.0|4.1g.0|1o.0.1o.0.1o.0.1o.0.1o.0.1o.0|1o.63.1o.63.1o.63.1o.63.1o.63.0.0|u000.u000.0.0.a0|0.0|e
If if substitute in Exquisite Ruby Jewels your effective power goes up about 7 %
Where or what is Cof? I need gold
COF is the Citadel of Flame dungeon. Path 1 can be run relatively quickly (10 minutes).
I used pebbles + copper filigree to make adorned pebbles. They counted
As someone who has too many alts I recommend sticking to a main unless you really feel like you need to mix it up to keep enjoying the game.
Like you, I also have a level 80 ranger who is not geared. I also have a level 80 elementalist, warrior, and thief. And a level 30 something guardian.
My recommendation depends on what you like. If you like the mesmer because of the misdirection and confusing nature of play, I recommend a S/D thief.
If you want something totally different, i recommend a guardian (although I have less experience there.)
Elementalists can feel similar to a mesmer, but the play style is more frantic. For the mesmer I usually have brief frantic period with multiple bursts and calmer periods setting up the next burst. Elementalists are all frantic all the time.
If you are level 80 then I recommend the base shatter-cat build (see the sticky) for PVE.
If you’re not, then it really depends on your level.
Are you more interested in PVE or WvWvW content?
It depends on how elastic the demand for ectos is. For example, at 30s a pop many people could decide that the ascended back piece is not worth the effort. It may be that at 25s the number of people who go after the back piece skyrockets absorbing all of the additional ectos.
But don’t you want to farm 20 Thackeray approvals for an ascended helm, 25 Jenna Relics for gloves, and 50 Mystic Toasters for legs!?
Actually, I believe legs cost 50 Mystic Toasters, 50 Ectos, and 12 gold. :-)
Jealous is what you say when you can’t defend anything. Also, the idea you are being punished because you aren’t being given an advantage is ludicrous. FYI..I have 3 80s and working on a 4th. Yet, I’m mature enough to know when something is inconsistent with game design and bad for the game, even if having it removed would hurt me personally?
BTW, It’s now created sort of an interesting problem. Temples just aren’t getting done as much it seems, because why do them when you can farm the “easy” events (low level and dragon) on multiple alts all day for the same loot? Is people doing frozen maw every 20 minutes on 4-8 different characters a good idea in the books of all these people defending this?
Actually, I think “entitled” is what people say when they don’t have an argument. The game is trying to balance time gating with a desire to see people continue to play the game. Actually, prior to the introduction of laurels I think everything was character bound (fractal rewards, dungeon rewards, soulbound items, dyes, commander tags, etc…). So the inconsistency is with things that are account bound not things that are character bound.
You can have many characters (at least 5) why not try a mesmer?
Personally, I would love to switch my Ranger to a Gaurdian. Instead I’m leveling from scratch… again.
I have a level 76 elementalist and I’m still running around in level 65 rares and I have no problem surviving in PVE, so the squishiness gets better.
You may feel very squishy compared to your Ranger. You have no pet to tank for you.
[quote=1530607;Krogan Battlemaster.9634:
If you are having problems staying alive as a Warrior, then you fail. I can main tank, pull groups of mobs, etc. without any food on me what so ever. I do use food in dungeons, if I can remember to bring it. But it’s in no way “required” and I can do my job as main tank as well if not more than a guardian can. [/quote]
What’s your technique? Since the food nerf, I find that when I tank a large mobs I eventually get knocked down. Sometimes faster, sometimes slower.
In response to the aggro issue, I run a mix of knights and beserkers. In dungeons I find that everyone aggros on me. It’s very difficult to stay alive, especially since they nerfed the food.
Maybe those zerker warriors will finally “lose” some of their OPness now. Nerfing them without nerfing their skills, nice job.
My warrior uses a knights armor set. When I run a dungeon EVERYTHING aggros on me. The food was useful/vital to staying alive.
Yep, I can’t really play my Pistol Whip thief anymore, now I “MUST” go stealth critical copy cutter thief.
That may be true, but this is a good fix that was definitely long overdue regardless of its side effects. Hopefully now that you can’t use those builds as effectively will be a signal for ANet as to what to buff in the next patch. They’ve already said that they buff things based on usage, so something going completely unused is a definite signal for them to fix it up.
My only question is: What is the internal cooldown?
i guess and hope its 2 secs at least like sigil of blood
Stealing 325 health every 2 seconds is not useful for anyone. It essentially makes the food useless.
I agree with your points, but I think the reason for laurels is to make sure it takes 180 days (less counting monthlies) to gear up a toon. This slows the gear progression while still giving people who need something to work toward something.
180 days for those that have the ability to play every single day, but for casual players that can not log in every day just to watch npc’s die so you can res them, and dodge around in lava fonts it will take a LOT longer than 180 days.
I agree with you, the system sucks, I’m just outlining my view of why they did it this way. I have 4 level 80 alts and I hate that I can’t get the gear in any reasonable time frame.
(queue some kitten saying that I shouldn’t expect to outfit 4 toons in the amount of time it takes him to get 1. Yeah, yeah, I know., you’re brilliant, thanks)
Any solution to the problem would have to take into account the reason that Anet did it this way, and while I don’t know anything, I suspect its to slow access to the gear.
Leviathan, there has up to now been NO content for large groups, is it really unreasonable to have some for large groups?
Yes, when the rewards are disproportionately large.
If you did the event and received 26 silver and 60 dungeon tokens no one would be upset. Instead, they are offering two rares with a chance of precursors that small guild members will never get. That’s what’s unreasonable.
I agree with your points, but I think the reason for laurels is to make sure it takes 180 days (less counting monthlies) to gear up a toon. This slows the gear progression while still giving people who need something to work toward something.
If they make any universal currency, this quickly go away. People will farm dungeons, fractals, WvW, etc and the hardcore will have a full ascending set in 64 seconds and then be back on the forums complaining.
I expect that in a year when ultra-ascended super dooper gear is released laurels will be much easier to obtain.
So by the lack of responses I’m assuming that nobody thinks this is an idea worth working on. Good to know.
I think you need to give people more than 8 minutes to think about it. Even small guilds need to talk among themselves.
Personally, I don’t understand how it would world since each guild has it’s own upgrades and influence. There isn’t anyway to combine influence (I don’t think).
Thinking about it some more, clearly ascended gear is intended to satisfy the “gear progression” faction. But at the same time, ArenaNet doesn’t want to start a treadmill. The solution that they’ve hit on is to slowly roll out new accessories and make obtaining them time gated.
This hurts alts because you can only gear up one toon at a time. But if they did it any other way, the people with one toon would just create throwaway alts for laurels, would quickly obtain the gear for their main, and would be qqing about no end game.
My solution is that I am only getting ascended items on 1 character and that’s the only one I will use in WvW (the only place it really matters).
I hope to god they don’t do the ectos + 40 laurel per piece. That is a ridiculous price, would make ectos skyrocket and the time commitment to gear one of my characters means I basically forget about ever gearing my alts or even other specs.
The laurel price would be bad enough but the ectos make it even worse.
I agree. The price of ascended gear makes having more than 1 toon impractical.
I’ve got 3 toons that I split my time between, all of them 45-55. I’ve got about 8-9g total. I’ve put in hours of leveling and gathering, etc but I’m assuming that the real money-making comes at 80. Is this true? Sure, I can get a drop that I can sell for 10s occassionally, but most of my gold so far comes from selling gathered crafting materials. At 80, are drops easier to sell on the TP? Are there craftable items that sell well?
The money is pretty constant once the mobs start dropping T6 materials. I think that happens around level 70. (note: constant does not mean plentiful)
Thanks for the tips.
Unfortunately I used all of my Karma recently buying jewelry boxes for cash to create an ascended back piece. So it will take a while to build it up again.
I’m interested in the Condition Damage, Toughness, Precision gear. Which dungeon is the quickest (I don’t have tons of time to play and prefer to run around WvW when I can.)
Arah (ha!), Honor of the Waves, Twilight Arbor, or Cadecus’s Manor?
I must be doing something wrong. I don’t make anywhere near 5-10 gold a day. Heck, I don’t even think I really make 1-gold a day in a two hour session. The only time I get that kind of gold is if I go out of my way to run Fractals/AC/Cursed Shore the entire time.
The only way I’ve seen anywhere near that much money is when I farm dungeons. If you run COF 1 until you hit DR you can make 2.5g + from that alone (40 minutes – ish).
I wouldn’t delete one, but I have a level 80 ranger who does nothing but farm ori-nodes once a day. He does it in a coat and boots and that’s all.
Between my focus and the superior rune of the centaur x6 bonus, I basically have perma +33% movement speed on my mesmer. Add blink in there and my mobility is better than any other character I have.
In WvW I have to hold back or I will leave my guild’s zerg behind.
TLDR: What mesmer speed issues?
Sure. Mesmers have no speed issues if you use a focus AND you trait 20 points into Inspiration AND you use at least 4 runes of the centaur.
However, that’s a pretty restrictive set of conditions to place on being able to keep up with the pack.
Toobz, are you talking about only guild perks, or the all around benefits of being in a guild?
All around benefits, I guess. Some of the others have answered my questions thanks.
I’m currently in a guild with a RL friend. But, as a guild member, I can’t see what’s in it for me.
I run dungeons and participate in events and the guild gets points, which the officers can use for banners, etc, when they feel like it. But I only get the benefit if I happen to be there.
Why do people join guilds? Is there some benefit I’m not seeing?
I agree, the Peg Leg is a great tool. It’s very useful.
Some player stand in the invulnerability zone near a keep and attack at range. Or tiptoe out and run back at the first sign on engagement. The peg leg can be used to knock players out of that zone.
It’s obviously not a true market, because we don’t bid on how much gold you would be willing to pay for the gems. So there’s really no way to value the price of a gem.
My guess is that there’s some formula that causes the price of gems to tick up when people buy them with gold and tick down when people buy gems with cash.
I guess that you’re saying that the market inevitably gets shocked when content is announced. That makes some sense, I suppose, but makes me wonder why, if the market will inevitably be shocked, does it matter when the market gets shocked.
I think what John is saying is that the uncertainty about what is going to happen to the precursors is build into the market. Any definitive statement that John were to make would remove some of that uncertainty or shift perceptions and therefore would shock the market.
For example, if Anet says precursors are too hard to get, the market would be shocked. Prices would likely fall as people tried to unload any they had while they can still get a high price.
But if Anet says they are fine the way they are then the future expectations change. If more people has expected precursors to be easier to get and now they know they won’t then the price goes up. If more people had expected thought that precursors would become more rare and now they know they won’t then the price goes down.
It becomes even more muddy, because even a statement such as, “precursors may be a little too difficult to obtain” will change future expectations to some degree and thereby affect the market.
When matters because a false shock, that is a misread signal, would affect the market in the wrong direction. Better to wait, make a change (if needed) with minimal commentary and let the market respond.

Well, anet said they’re not gonna play whack-a-mole…
Shame they said that AFTER nerfing ranger into oblivion when closed beta ended, and kicking him in the balls with the “shortbow animation fix”So lets hope for some good general buffs on weaker classes.
And still people in PVP complain about the trap/condition ranger. Which is the one decent build left.
well Ascended should be there but only as a cosmetic feature. People love their skins. Love to show off. Anet just let them love and all will be good again.
And then fix the stats and let us casuals get stats easier.
Thank you
I’m a casual, and I think options for all player types is good for the game. Stop acting like casuals are losing out on something because of ascended gear, we’re not.
Not yet. Eventually, when all content will be updated with ascended stats in mind (and the devs said it will), everyone else will be left behind.
Most likely, by the time ascended gear is necessary, it will be easier to obtain. For example, giving laurels for in game achievements could greatly increase the number of laurels available.
I think they should implement RNG to last step of making legendary weapon. You put in 3 gifts & precursor and you will get chance to obtain the legendary! Isn’t it cool? Maybe then people that are excited about this would finally wake up.
Just because you can come up with worse systems doesn’t mean the current system isn’t bad.
In general, I think that ArenaNet is receptive to ideas to provide rewards in a non-RNG fashion that cannot be ground out by the hardcore in a couple of hours (as the laurels show). I think peoples energy is better spend thinking of those.
I see many people hating on RNG.
Life is based on RNG.No.
Random numbers is just a cheap way to fake complexity.
I think the RNG is a way to extend gameplay. In a single player game the drops and look locations can be fixed (or predominately fixed). The player progresses through the game, finds all the goodies, finishes the game and quits.
An MMO is designed around having you play for an indefinite period of time. One of the ways is by linking rewards to RNG. You can gather all the materials (also RNG) for a legendary, but you can’t get one until you get the precursor (very rare RNG drop) or buy one (save up for a long time).
Using this method you’ll play the game until you finally decide the button won’t ever give you a pellet (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operant_conditioning_chamber) then you quit.
Currently, the items are soulbound once you equip them. I doubt this will ever change. If you haven’t equipped it yet, I would mess around with the alts FIRST and then select your favorite.
In GW2 you can see every content available even if you’re wearing full rare gear, e.a. as soon as you hit lvl80. Arenanet introduced ONE challenge that keeps increasing in difficulty IF YOU WANT and now it’s a treadmill?
Finally some sense on the forums, what people fail to understand is that fractals are the only place where ascended gear could ever be required and the gear will be obtainable by various different means. They’re merely rolling the gear out slowly in order to get properly balance and adjust the way it works.
Another thing people fail to understand is unlike WoW where the dungeons each requires some attunements and gear to enter, this game provides no real restriction on viewing content. Fractal level 2 is the same as 50 for what you can see and do and yet people call an optional activity a treadmill when they don’t know the meaning of the term.
I agree and disagree. I agree that there is absolutely no reason to have best in class gear in 99% of PVE content. This is the reason I’m not going to grind for Ascended gear for my alts (just the thought of collecting 1250 powerful blood makes me queezy)
However, ascended gear provides an advantage in WvW that is not insignificant. If you have each piece of ascended great available (Amulet, rings, and backpiece) you can do approximately 3-5% more damage. You don’t need it (the same way you don’t need to be level 80 to WvW). But you’ll die more often if you don’t have it.
Finally, I think ArenaNet is rolling out ascended gear slowly to maintain a sense of progression without having a ridiculous escalation in the power level of gear. Spend two months grinding fractals for rings, a couple of months getting an amulet, next will be earrings, etc.
There is only 1 tier for dailies. So when it says 15 dodges it means 15 dodges and the category is complete.
