My opinion? I have a ranger, mesmer and necromancer.
In PvE? Ranger all the way.
In PvP? Ranger all the way (Although occasionally a necromancer does outskill me)

..And I’m still friggin scared when I run into a spirit ranger.

And yet, there are posts on this forum from folks saying they had been kicked out of PUG groups in PvE dungeon runs for using a bow….

I have not ever been kicked for being a ranger. I’m also nearly always on my shortbow. 2.400 hours played, all dungeons complete, fractals to level 40. I don’t get it ^^ I was once kicked from a CoF path 1 run, but that’s the “only warriors/mesmers” dumbnuts

I can now confirm that Regina’s method works. Remember the description of how the rows are! I think many people are leaving the 4 mobs near the boss, rather than the.. 7? on the long row.

Based on Regina’s description the ones to keep alive are the +

- – - – - – +
- – - – - – +
- – - – - – + B
- – - – - – +

I have tried this method, and it did not work.

You are mistaken. Following your drawing the + to leave alive is standing like this:

+++++++
– - – - – - -
– - – - – - – B
– - – - – - -

My group didn’t want to do a risky pull, ending up killing too many, so we left it like this:

+++++++
+++++++
– - – - – - – B
– - – - – - -

If you then go pull the boss between the pipes, no mobs should follow for long. As many others, we killed him under the place we initially dropped down. We killed the patrols and the steam guard as well.

PvP gear collectibles – It begs to be collected and I have been doing so for a long time. But there is a split here that I’m really missing. Please make a seperate category for a) armor/weapon skins gained from Gemstore and b) One from “special items” – Anything else not introduced through PvP rewards. For a “pure” PvP player it would suck not to be able to complete even a part of a collection because it includes gemstore and PvE obtained gear as well.

PvE “Hall Of Monuments” or “Timeline” I would prefer a timeline style window, so I will explain the idea of that. Let’s just say we have a lot of weird items associated with PvE events over time. Instead of letting us carry them around, make a system like how we get achievement reward skins – A pretty window showing a timeline of the content updates and items associated to these – For example under Zephyr Sanctum you would be able to withdraw the model showing the cutscene. From Queens Jubilee you can withdraw your balloon and the torch and so on. Not only could this be a nice “locker” for those weird items that we get, it could also sum the Living Story up nicely, allowing us to keep track of the plot.

PvE locker – It has been asked for before, so I won’t go into details, but let’s just say town clothing and skins for one.

Lore – I know it’s there – This is one that I don’t really know how to solve, and I know it has been brought up on numerous occations. While the game is fun to play, I keep missing the stories. And yes, it is probably because I don’t take the time to do so. I’m not sure whether I find it un-interesting or just too hard to bother with, but well.. The game feels thin lore-wise even though I know it’s all there. What to do, what to do.

Valued items of no value – It just feels bad. Handing over that soulbound exotic rune you just got from a dungeon to the merchant. Merching the ascended ring you just got because you don’t have room for another. 4 silver 95 copper. Thanks, merchant. It would be nice to receive some kind of feelgood here; The obvious solution would be to let us forge these things. I understand why rings looted in Fractals are account bound, but what about letting us either salvage these rings for some of the new materials or forging 4 different rings for a new ring? How about letting us sell the runes we loot in dungeons or letting us forge 4 of them to receive another exotic rune? It feels so bad to just throw them away.

Although new content is nice, even having played 2.400 hours, having over 10.000 achievement points, having achieved being in top 10% in solo PvP, content is not a problem. Even without new content for a month or two, I would stick around generously if that meant getting just half of the suggestions above. It’s not an issue to find something to do in this game. But I find the quality of life can be improved a lot for almost all players if you took a month to fix up what you already have, making it stronger/better/right/fixed

Guild Tools: Gah. Managing a Guild is horrible. I appreciate you just improved message of the day, but it gets so messy. There are so many problems with guilds, let me try getting through it: Okay, message of the day – Well. It’s fine, but not what we really need. When your Guild grows big enough you need to display some info. As in a lot of info, easily readable without scrolling for every 2 lines. We need a tab. Call it “Guild Biography” if you like, where people can display the info they need – Next weeks events, teamspeak, website, things to be aware of, rules or whatever people need. We need a big window for it. Next up, when was the member last online? At 20 members I could manage. Now I have no idea. There is a workaround to use achievement leaderboard as a work around since you can see when a player last earned a point, but that’s just not ideal. Please just give us the “Last online: xx.xx.xxxx” and let us sort our Guild after it. Huge boost to guild leaders quality of life. Next up, I really want my members to be able to invite new people to the guild. But I do NOT want them to kick other members. How is this attached to the same permission? It really makes no sense?? I don’t think any elaboration is neccessary. Last thing; A social hub! I believe you have Guild Halls planned still, but just a reminder to please make it happen. I want a Guild Hall, upgradeable with Influence and Merits to get Merchants, BLTC traders, bank, guild bank, crafting stations and the like into the Guild Hall which I’m hoping would be the Guilds Lion’s Arch – The place everyone goes to after doing something in game to clean up their inventory, store/take something, buy/sell on trading post and such. A place that Guildies have a reason to go to. Help us get more social. One note on that though – We need to be able to map to anywhere in the world from there. Don’t make it some kind of closed-off instance. People needs to be able to waypoint directly to/from the Guild Hall. Otherwise it won’t be used. And while you might be able to offer Guild Hall upgrades for gems, please, please don’t make it like the Royal Pass. Guilds run on influence and merits.

Instance owner rage quits? Too bad: I know. It has been brought up so many times. But only because it is that important. Possibly an hour wasted every time this happens in the game. I have learned to always create the instance to ensure that the instance will finish, but come on. I would skip a content update if it meant not having to do this. I know it is a rather complex problem as you would have to redesign something.

New problem – Bloodstone Dust, Dragonite Ore – Let’s just say the other day I realized I had hit 10.000 Bloodstone Dust. Just a simple note to please not make numbers excessively high when a stack is only 250. There is no need for so much dust. Scale it down. 10.000 dust is 40 inventory slots. Seriously.

Waypoint costs – They simply make this game anti-social. I do not want to bother helping a random guy out yelling from across the map. Why? Simply because it’s 1.5 silver to go help him and 1.5 silver to go back where I came from. I do not want to go out of my way because I’m charged by doing so. Egoistic? Yes. But honestly the gold sink from waypoints makes little sense. I would rather have an increased fee on trading post rather than considering if it’s worth helping someone out. If you need to keep the goldsink, that’s fine, but put it somewhere else.

Heart rewards are simply not in line with anything. 2 silver for completing a heart is nothing. Either remove the reward and present more clearly to the player that he/she has unlocked a karma vendor and let that be the reward, or/and bump up the reward. How about for example a taste of liquid karma + an item (green, if lucky a rare) and a small coin bag with 5-8 silver? Much in line with completing a round of one of the daily activities.

Let’s jump inside the game. The elephant in the room? Bugs, bugs, bugs.

Bugs: Well. Seriously. Fix them. Yes, that is easily said, but the amount of bugs in the game is really really bad. A sign of that? Well, how about players making their own bug tracker on the forums?
It’s not that you don’t fix bugs. You fix lots of bugs. But there are also some that just should have been gone so long ago. A very simple example is the PvP Catcher backpieces. When will we be able to simply deposit these into the PvP locker? They were introduced months ago. I understand that it is a low priority as it does not break anything, but still. But okay, that’s a quality of life fix. How about the really bad ones? This one have been stickied in SPVP forum for nearly a year. Since release, if PvP players change between EU and US servers they will simply stop receiving reward chests – Which is the only reward you receive from playing tournaments. I personally missed out on 100 chests as I have announced vocally in that thread – around 200 matches with no rewards, which means I missed around 100 chests. 20.000 rank points. 20.000 glory. Around 500 pieces of gear/dyes/boosters. When contacting support they don’t even know about the bug, nor will they replace those chests. People left over it according to the thread, and I understand. It’s not exactly motivating. Imagine for a PvE player if a bug caused him to gain 70% less XP and 95% less gear. How long would you expect him to stick around? I know that it’s a kittene to fix, but in my opinion it’s a priority fix. If not, I ask that you re-evalue how much time you set off to bugfixing.

Communication (ingame): While I personally browse forums and such generously, I often find that of my 97 member Guild, only one or two people know about what’s going on outside the game. Now, of course it’s their own fault. They don’t bother reading up on the game. But for most of them it simply doesn’t cross their mind at all. Wouldn’t it be possible to have an ingame screen with announcements? A screen to make people aware of important topics? I wanted to suggest making the game launcher bigger, but everyone has it on autologin, and therefore sees it for 5 seconds at the most. How about adding an extra icon to the top left of the ingame UI, which pops a screen with announcements -> “Read the newest patch notes here!” – “Info on the upcoming content update!” – “Interview with MMORPG.com, read here!” – “Recognized Bug: Twilight Arbor, Aetherpath” – “Developer Livestream 16:00 GMT, check it out!”
While I would of course prefer that the content of these posts also displayed ingame, even a click-to-open-webbrowser would be great. Just please add an ingame screen to direct the sheep to the latest info. People are so lost when new content/changes arrives, you wouldn’t believe it. I think something like this would help it tremendously.

Tutorials. Where are they?: This game really really needs some tutorials. I often recruit Guild members in low level areas. The amount of completely lost players I have seen. Wow. Of course, if you are a MMO veteran you will get the hang of things. But for those to who GW2 is their first MMO. Let’s just say that most of them do not stick around for long, and often it seems like it is simply too much work for them to understand the game properly. My suggestion? In-game small videos. You already have the “unlocking system” where a player unlocks one weapon skill at a time, the ability to swap weapons, pets, virtues, attunements etc. Make a video available every time the player unlocks something. Put it in the corner like a daily reward chest (with another icon), so that whenever the player wants to click it, the video will pop, showing exactly what the player can do now. But don’t stop there. Show people how to salvage and the difference between kits. Show people how collectibles work. What to do with junk items. How the world works (hearts, vistas etc). Make small videos for this and you will have kept many new players in the game for at least a while longer. The game really really needs introductionary steps.

So I read this thread:

It seems like feedback finally got back to ArenaNet that we don’t see you enough on the forum. So I thought to myself, something went into that post. A post like that does not just pop randomly. And I would like to return that favor. So here are some suggestions from a player who has been everywhere but World Versus World. (It simply does not interest me, so I will leave that to someone else).

But hey, let me start outside the actual game.

Forum activity: Well. I’m going to cut some slack here, given the thread I linked, but what I do want to mention is, there seems to be progress! Your (visible) activity on the forums used be abysmal. It is still very hard to get answer from you, but all in all it is getting better. As an example, the Mini Mr. Sparkles that had a lot of players upset (10.000 views in general discussion, still active in BLTC subforum), could have been shut down with any kind of answer. People, myself included, keep coming back to the thread to keep it alive, to hope that you will see it at some point, to let us know whether this will stay exclusive or be added to the game. But on the other hand I see more helpful responses lately, even if it’s a simple “I will pass it on to the team”. That’s great to see. More of that! It gives players comfort that their concern has been noticed.

Communication (Patches): You are great of giving tasteful previews of upcoming patches. There is however one thing that really really sucks. It’s not that it happens often, but there were two bad incidents lately. The first was the lack of info that karma would be changed. I personally had (with boosts) around 2.500.000 million karma stored. All of a sudden that karma was around 2.000.000. Ouch! At least we got a chance to use it, thank you for that. But then came the crafting patch. I was just about to level 6 crafting disciplines from 1-400 to receive 60 levels across 3 characters. Patch comes around and since I didn’t pull it together to do it a few days earlier I got 42 levels instead. Ouch. What I’m getting at here is, when you change elements of the game that affects the player, please give a warning ahead of time. There is however one exception to this! Please do not leak market info first on other sites. I have seen before that because of some MMO site interview, certain items rocketed in price. The info they share on their blogs should be available for everyone who browses GuildWars 2 official sites in my opinion. It sucks a bit to miss out on some market shift because of an interview you made. What am I getting at? – Well, either make some very visible links to whoever posts interviews you made or make sure the information that people could make a profit on is available here too.

With exception of your US Texas server sometimes displaying on my current logins (Seriously, why is that??), which would very much freak out a lot of players, that’s pretty much it for the outside of the game. In every other aspect I think you do a nice job here.

Treeline.3865

I’m a very experienced player, I play ranger for a main and have a level 80 mesmer as well.

Basically, I’m just looking for inputs on how to build my necro (Skills, Traits, Weapons, stats, runes, sigils)

It has to be able to:

- Steady DPS. Like really hard. I have no preference as to whether that means Power or Conditions, but I’m unsure as to how big a problem the condition cap is in parties.
- “Get out of jail free card” – I prefer being squishy, but I want some kind of saving grace. My ranger has a traited signet of stone (6 seconds of taking no direct damage). My mesmer has Decoy and Distortion. Necroes have their second HP pool, but I don’t want to rely on that to get my butt to safety.
- Run fast – Quality of life for open PvE.

What I’ve come up with so far is Staff + Scepter/Warhorn, all berserker using minions as utility skills + Signet of the Locust to run faster. It works just fine in open PvE, except I hate the minion AI. And I assume minion builds are horrible in dungeons.
Wells deals some nasty damage, but there is also a big cooldown where I feel like I’m doing next to nothing.

What are some nice Necro DPS builds that can include these quality of life speed boosts and get out of jail free cards? I’m a bit out of ideas.

Edit: Also, I’m aware of October 15th

Well that’s all well and good for you; however, the predominant sentiment of the people in this thread are about the bugged nature in acquiring it through difficult means, not the obtainment through what would appear to be sheer luck.

Until you have verified that it is in fact sheer luck and not the method we are looking for, cut him some slack? Have anyone done it like described?

1) If you experience rage quitters often, make sure YOU enter the dungeon first. Then you can always invite new people in, no restart required.

2) Even if the dungeon takes 4 hours the first time, you hopefully learn from some of those mistakes. When you get good at it, it should take no longer than 90 minutes, 2 hours tops with some wipes.

Treeline.3865

I’ve finally determined the cause of the issue.

I have a full writeup on what I’ve finally determined to be causing this problem, but I’ve not finished the photos and graphics explaining it yet.

I disassembled many optical, laser, wired and wireless mice to find a common defect within them. I disassembled several variations of the Razer Naga mice, a Razer Copperhead (my favorite mouse), several Logitech mice, a Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer, and a few generic brand mice. I found the same exact issue to be present in all of these mice.

The quick and easy way of explaining it (with the Razer Naga as an example) is:

  • The flat piece on the under side of the button that contacts the ‘click’ activation button becomes worn down due to being made of soft plastic and because the mouse buttons can move side to side slightly. (arrows on attached image)
  • This leads to the button activating with gentle pressure applied to the center of the button until it clicks (red prohibited symbol on attached image), but adding a little bit more pressure causes the worn down soft plastic to slip off of the activation button slightly…leading to stuttering activation based on pressure and angle.
  • Because of this, you will need to push against the outer right side of the mouse button (green target on attached image) to fully activate the button as pushing at an angle causes an area of plastic that is not worn down to contact the activation button.

I’ll update again when I finish the graphics, photos and writeup of the issue.

Appreciate the research, but honestly, why would this issue only persist in Guild Wars 2? While your explanation sounds reasonable and explains a lot, it seems odd that so many players have the issue while having no issues in other games?

My main issue with huntards is the pet won’t chase after something if its like 1200+ range away which doesnt feel far when that’s how far longbow untraited reaches. I hadn’t played huntard in a long time so I don’t remember it always being this way.

This was changed, and.. Well I understand why, but of course it stinks.
Let’s just say I ran a bunker ranger build in PvP, and I could stand on mansion or windmill while my pet was roughing up the clocktower

There actually is a reason for this. You are actually beyond the listed range limit for your bow. if you notice, bow shots arc, and actually travel slightly further than the 900 range, hence you still hit because the rest of the arc finishes just at the target, however since it is out of 900 range the game doesnt seem to pick up on completing the attack from the auto attack side of it. You can test it with SB #2, since that is a straight line, it fades out at exactly 900, so it will not actually hit the enemy, while any attacks you have that the arrow arcs in, will. I found out this little fact when trying to figure out how my ranger friend could hit further away from me with my scepter despite having the same range weapons.

I didn’t know this! But now that you mentioned it I have noticed that if something is far away, I find that #2 misses more often. So it actually makes a lot of sense! – But wow. That makes 900 range even shorter than I thought!

Unable to stow pet in combat – Two bear pets on passive with the “Protect Me” utility works. It’s one of the things that allows me to go full berserker and not die too much. Pets are useless in WvW zerg and wall fights anyway.

Invulnerable, invulnerable, invulnerable.. Yes very immersion-breaking. If something else is attacking your target it will never go invulnerable. A pet is a valid option. So first send in the pet and then get on the ledge afterwards.

I used to run with 2 bears and Protect Me as well, but I found it to be too much of a waste. What I ended up doing instead was running a traited Signet of Stone for a better version of Protect Me, and change the bears with Wolf/Dog to have the pets do a little damage and not dying instantly in.. Non-instant-pet-kill combat.

And thanks, I actually didn’t know that sending in the pet first could solve the invulnerability either! I’m actually getting something ^^

Invulnerable, invulnerable, invulnerable.. Well, I feel like the game punishes me for outsmarting my enemies. But even when I’m not this happens a lot. And once it’s invulnerable I can sometimes go melee it for some hits before it gets that i’m not trying to cheat it. With the example being Uncategorized Fractal (The harpy one), does anyone have suggestions as how to avoid this pesky thing while on a bow? I’d include obstructed to this one, but I actually don’t find that to be too unreasonable.

I like to maintain an overview, holding my camera so I’m looking at the ground often, watching out for AoE’s and the like. This however comes with the side effect of my bow aiming into the ground if I have not picked a target. This sucks! I like to play PvP from time to time, and while I have no personal problem with thieves – Well everyone else can melee into the air and hit them when invisible. I’m good at predicting, but I have to change my camera so that I’m looking at my butt in order to do the same. Did anyone find a way to work around that?

Pet is too dumb, version 2 – This is also no news, but honestly. Try surviving for a day without dodging. I’d argue there are no tips for this one either, except microing as well as possible, but come on. Shockwaves. How are you going to micro your way out of that one.

Pet F2 is stationary – Chasing something? Ever tried using your pets special skills? The pet will run until it’s within range, then stop to cast the skill. When it’s done casting the target is long gone. I’m not sure if this can be manipulated somehow. I guess you can have the pet attack the target if it is melee, then cast the spell. Then it would at least be closer to the target. But for ranged pets I see no workaround here. Do you?

Sword skill #1 – Well there’s the rooting/leaping which makes it very easy to stick to people. Got to love that. But unfortunately it comes with the cost of being unable to dodge, unless you turn auto-attacking off. But that should honestly not be neccessary. I believe there is no workaround while maintaining auto-attack functionality?

Sword skill #1, 2nd edition – It’s nice to be able to keep jumping on to your target – Right until it for some obscure reason that I haven’t found does not hit the target. If you have used sword much you will have tried suddenly leaping ~600 range away from your target, often also jumping back onto the target with another hit. But wow is that a problem. Hey, I fell down a ledge, hey I fell down again. Is there any reason for this sudden jump? Any way to see it coming?

After 2.000 hours+ playing ranger as a main. Well I love the class, it’s the best. But wow. There is a horrible amount of problems, and much of the time I’m trying to figure how to work around them.

I’d just like to see how rangers in general feel about some things, and maybe if you have some ideas on how to work around some of these problems.

Shortbow. Do you ever use this weapon since they changed the range from 1200 -> 900? I think 900 range is horrible, but I hate the longbow with a passion, so I’m sticking to it. I feel like I can’t place myself tactically with the shortbow any longer.

“Search And Rescue” – Does anyone really use this skill? I used to love it because it could resurrect a dead player while the rest kept fighting some boss. It made me feel unieue as a ranger. Reviving a downed player only, is too little to spend a skill slot on for me, and I might as well do it myself since it doesn’t take long.

Warhorn skill #5 – Is anyone else frustrated that using this skill makes your pet aggro the nearest enemy, unless set on passive? As a part PvE player I find it incredibly annoying when for example running to a boss, popping skill #5, that the pet gets me in combat with some random mob. (Since we run slower in combat).

Old classics – Pet. I’m decent at microing my pet but some encounters are just not made for it. Old news, not going to elaborate, but is there anyone who actually finds that microing is always possible?

Pet skill #2 – Too slow, doesn’t go off, you know this one as well. I’m aware that you can cancel a pets current actions to make the #F2 skill go off faster, but it still fails from time to time. Does any of you use a build that actually relies on a #F2 skill? How often does that work out for you?

Pet does not stay directly on the ranger – And it would look dumb. But you have all tried navigating through for example a huge field of AoE damages. Your pet won’t make it through, as it keeps running beside you.

Unable to stow pet in combat – Well, ok, this is not a must have. But there’s certainly fights that call for it, for example Risen Abominations. It can hit your pet even when it is on passive, making it much worse to take down. For example in the Eye of Zhaitan boss event, there’s a champion Risen Abomination. With skill it can be soloed, but as a Ranger I can’t, because the pet will take 6 hits before dying, and well, then the Risen Abomination hurts as soon as it manages to hit me. The Jade Maw fight is another example. The fight simply takes longer with rangers in the party because pets are targets as well. This is just a few examples, but is anyone able to actually play in a way that this is not annoying at the least? Can you work around it?

Shortbow #3 – Well. It makes you dodge, but often it still fails to push you backwards. More of a statement than a question, I really don’t think there is any solution here, is there?

Autoattacks does not work if nearing the range limit. Why? Is there any way to make this work? For example, you can hit the Golem Mk II boss from the edge of the platform, not risking the lethal energy fields. It is juuuust within range for the shortbow. But effectively I also have to spam the “1” button for the 8-10 minutes the boss is up. Is there any way of getting rid of this?

I was going to mention horrible trait descriptions, but I think that’s being worked on.

The pet is too dumb – Pathing- Ever tried standing on a plateau while hitting your enemy? We are rangers after all. For example you can outsmart the Dredge Commisar in Dredgehaunt Cliffs by using the tribulation jumping puzzle as a platform. It works excellent. Then there is the matter of the pet. Since you’re on the platform it does not know how to get down. It can’t do anything. It has to idle the entire fight because a pet can’t drop down like we can. Even if getting to that platform did not require a few jumps, the pet would run down to the ground, around the southern path and back up to the Dredge Commisar, a path of nearly 30 seconds before it reaches its target. (Extreme case, but just to explain the problem). Is there anyway we can work around this problem? Can we somehow stay on our elevated ground and still have our pet go right for the target? Or can you really outsmart any pet by being on a different platform?

In case you missed it: single thread performance.
New laptops usually run i3 or i5 CPUs compared to mid range gaming rigs with AMD cpus.

Here s a “GW2” CPU chart: http://www.cpubenchmark.net/singleThread.html

Yes there is the occasional “i didnt clean my PC for 3 years” or similar situation but in general GW2s render engine the main source of the problem. There are no miracle performance boosts till they dethread/optimize/rework it.

I was not debating whether or not the game is thread heavy. It is. As for your point about the intel and amd processors I’m not quite sure which point you are trying to get across.

There are plenty of “miracle performance boosts” if your computer isn’t setup right. As the best example which I have already used, no one really considered CPU cores being parked when running the game, until a guy came along at the forum. I’ve never seen so many happy people in one thread before. You can yell all you want that you get horrible performance because of poor optimization/poor game engine all you want, but a lot of people also come here saying they have no problem. If they can run the game, why can’t you? Because the game has a special exception that if they see your particular setup, it has to do twice the work? I have still seen nothing that indicates why half of GW2 players should get poor performance while others run the game fine.

But telling people their game runs like $^#& because they’ve made utter rookie mistakes and it’s all their own fault and you know better is inconsiderate to say the least.

Well, from my point of view
- Various computers run the game fine.
- People with similar or superior specs run the game poorly
- If the error is on GW2’s side: I see no way how. Sure a game can run differently depending on your entire setup. But assuming two build of somewhat equal power all around, using slightly different setup, using common components – Well that does not make a game go from 10 to 60 FPS, nor the other way around
- If the error was on the computer, software somehow blocking the hardware, that would however explain why people using the same setups get way different results.

I’m not trying to be inconsiderate. I’m trying to look at it logically.

Furthermore, it’s fairly common knowledge that GW2’s problems lie with the game logic (as in, CPU), as otherwise changing graphics settings (which everyone can and have done in vain attempt to get more FPS) would resolve any performance problems outright.

That’s what I was getting at.

True! GW2 is way too CPU dependant, and to date I’ve never seen a graphics card holding this game back (With the rare exception of the mobile Intel HD 3000/4000, which I refuse to call a graphics card). But once you utilize that CPU while still being ok in regard to other components, I have still to see the computer that can’t hit somewhere around 30 FPS in a zerg.
And I also agree completely that changing in-game settings doesn’t change much for most machines; Those settings revolve mostly around the GPU which in most cases isn’t doing much anyway.

Still – Never seen a relatively new computer not being able to pull 30FPS… Well unless the new computer is a tablet q:

Your ego is showing.

Either way your “advice” was absolutely bogus. I was just trying to find a polite way to tell you that everyone knows it’s bogus.

You’re basically insulting everyone here by saying poor performance is attributable to rookie mistakes, when everyone knows full-well that the GPU side of things (and by extension, graphics settings) have zero effect on performance overall. Everyone knows the issue is game logic (CPU-dependant) and you’re telling your tales about how you helped your friend by disabling power savings for their AMD card. It’s nonsense.

Again, we have reports from people running pre-2xx generation nVidia cards that can easily “max” the graphics without issue.

There’s always “experts” like you in these threads. Everyone’s heard it: “It runs fine for me, so you must be doing something wrong, and I’m a genius computerist for building my rig right.”

Well it’s garbage, and it’s annoying.

Alright, I’m sorry for trying to indicate that I could actually know a little on the subject, since I helped, not just my own, but somewhere around 7 or 8 other computers up. And yes, some of them were rookie things, like using the power saving power-plan for a laptop. But heck, even I didn’t know that core parking could be a problem on a computer until GW2. The advice is not bogus. Maybe it is to you because you knew about all those things, but a lot of people go from “My computer isn’t running the game well” → “I’ve heard something about a game engine, let’s jump that bandwagon”. I’m not trying to insult anyone, but I’m also not assuming that being a GuildWars 2 player with a low framerate means knowing anything as to why that is. But since you seem confident enough to try and debunk me completely, why do you guess that a generic relatively new laptop can run the game while new gaming rig computer can’t? Is that game optimization for you, or could there be something else at play?

Erratic performance between similar systems – or, in case of GW2, similar zones and similar events – is the very definition of poor optimization.

That’s basically what a poorly-optimized game is: something that demands much, much, much more power than what it seemingly needs. Or, in GW2’s case, much more power than what it says on the box.

The kitten game runs on my 3 year old laptop at 50 fps after changing somethings. A second gen i5-460M.

For the record, I’ve played GW2 on a 450, 560, and an old 9800GT. Unless you turn up the shadows and reflections all the way up, it’ll run the same.

“The same” meaning the same 20 FPS in most cases.

Hell, Someone posted here earlier with similar results on a 9600 GT (“I can run it on max when turning down some settings!”). Other than the horrible shadow and reflection systems, the game barely needs anything in the graphics department, which is common knowledge among the players, and speaking of which…

You’d do well to follow your own advice and not act like you know everything and give out bogus advice. It’s just plain old insulting, and rude. Thanks.

As a software engineer (well in half a year) I’m very sorry to insult you with my useless advice. I have not yet seen a computer with a decent CPU and GPU that was unable to run GW2. With the exception of trying to help someone running Intel HD 3000 graphics (laptop) I have not yet seen a newer computer being unable of achieving 30 FPS in a zerg – No this might not always be on the best graphics, but many of them were not the best computers either. Yet I see people complaining that their über clocked stuff gets 10 FPS. That’s not poor optimization. That’s something restricting the hardware from performing. Poor optimization does not make your over 9000GTXüber card or your 5ghz clocked to 200ghz run like a toaster.
It’s not that I disagree the game can use more optimization, I would love the game to run smoother on my laptop – Being 3 years old it doesn’t get much higher than 40 FPS in zergs either, nearing 30 at the lowest.

The “erratic performance” between similar systems you talk about – Sure I’ve seen it. It’s called different drivers, some pre-installed hardware-gimping software, this “super cool optimizer app making my cpu up to 400%* faster”, unintended core parking, kitten running in the background etc etc. I have yet to see a case of a mid-range system released within the last few years that doesn’t run GW2.

Just for fun, I have played around with both guildies and real life friends computers who were running GW2 poorly. Some of the “lamers” who think they know everything were complaining that it was GW2’s fault, just like half the people in this thread.

The look on their face when the power settings, or ATI performance meter was set to low, is just priceless. Just from unparking CPU cores, making sure ATI drivers are updated (Or nvidia for that matter) and the like.

Well.. My own computer: ~30 FPS → ~50FPS (Core unparking)
Girlfriends computer: 20 FPS → 60 FPS (ATI settings)
Guildie computer: 21 FPS → 44 FPS (Updated her ATI driver, and this was by the way running a 2nd gen laptop-i3)
This is just a few examples, but since they’re numbers without proof, I’m not gonna keep going

But guys. Take a look at your computers. Specs are not everything. A crappy driver, a wrong setting or the like can ruin your performance. Don’t be ignorant and think you know everything, just because you bought a “gamer computer” and know what a CPU is. If you’re running some overclocked crap piece of overpriced hardware which runs GW2 at 10 FPS, it’s not on GW2’s end. The kitten game runs on my 3 year old laptop at 50 fps after changing somethings. A second gen i5-460M. Get your kitten together, and figure out where to put your efforts.

You guys probably should have been there the first evening. Everyone ran around Sparkfly Fen trying to find the teeth, happily announcing on the entire map that a tooth was found near ______. It only lasted for 30 minutes or so, but it was quite fun, as everyone ran all over the map.
Then this happened: Dulfy started making her Guide, and soon the map chat was empty. People knew where to go, and just got it overwith. As much as I LOVE Dulfy, it also ruins some of the great teamwork that allowed me to find 7/10 before her guide. Of course this is not aimed at Dulfy, nor any guide for that matter. The simple reason that “find 10 things” is boring is because with guides it’s just a fetch quest that no one wants to bother figuring out themselves. So no. Dulfy is not everything we have. She just trivializes some achievements.

She’s doing an amazing job though

While this is a friggin sweet idea, I must say I reccommend making yet another Guild for the purpose of killing Tequatl. On main servers it’s hard to do because
- You get loads of random people
- Many are AFK while waiting for Tequatl and just scales the event for most of the duration

With a coordinated Guild you could find a somewhat empty overflow and fill it. Then coordinate over Teamspeak or the like. It works wonders.
