I am curious – what is your characters name?

Why I pvp? Simple answer, I like to compete. Ranked is where the best competition is generally.

You, beating up on noobs in hotjoin is not competition. Most people are down in hotjoin because they are either brand new, or they are trying out new classes/specs. Either way, they do not have the twitch memory to fight a high level player and win. So you are in essence, the school yard bully…nothing more. You are not teaching anyone anything down in hotjoin except to hate things as much as you do.

When I do go down to hotjoin and am practicing a new class/spec…I too chase the best player in the match… but mine is to figure out the sequences and build my twitch. then I’m back out and into Ranked – the difference in competition is very noticeable.

It kind of sucks for you that you have fallen so low. I hope you can pull yourself out of it. I hope you competitive drive and will to win kicks back in and pulls you out of your stupor. You have fallen to the dark side of this game – I hope someone…even Ben Kenobi can save you!

If you want a new experience, try going back to Ranked where you have to be great, which it seems you are, and you have to be a leader which helps communicate with teammates to help them win.

All the Best,

Cindy Lou Who, the Bestest Who in all of Whoville

I like you Cindy. I like the way you think critically.

Usually I play on either my Mesmer Ky or Thief Mon, as I have given up on my warrior (I have played far too many hambow, ss/lb settler shoutheal, and meta celestial) but I have 2 accounts full of characters that I switch to from time to time, usually for trolling purposes or quick build swaps.

I understand your statement of ranked is where the competition lies, but the real competition is in the tournaments, of which I cannot take part in due to out of game circumstances in conjunction with my current disapproval of the situation. Hotjoin may not be competition in the same form as say ranked or tournament, but there are several servers that provide very VERY high levels of it (matches closer than any of the thousands of ranked matches I’ve played). Some of the best players I’ve seen, sans current top teams, play exclusively hotjoin or close to it. Some I’ve yet to be able to put in downstate even after years of playing with them.

I’m ok with being the bully, I’m sure most people learn better through experience than theory, I’m ok with dropping a new player in 1 shatter because I am there to do just that. It’s not personal, it’s not business, I don’t enjoy it, but I enjoy the other options even less. I too hope for the salvation that you describe, I welcome Mr. Kenobi with open arms should he pay a visit, but until I see empirical evidence that things are indeed in an upswing I will not allow the illusion of spoken or written PR management to sway me. Currently I merely need to be ADEQUATE in PvP, and to do so, all I need do is equip certain builds and let them primarily play themselves.

I can respect the need for builds other than zerker, because zerker only PvP (while significantly less dull than, as LoL key’d it, “Tanky DPS”) wouldn’t be good for the game at all. But there has to be division, there has to be pros and cons to builds, comps, professions. I have some what of an issue with the way that new players are being shoehorned into builds that allow for extreme forgiveness, and similarly (and justifiably) the same for advanced players. You cannot learn by keeping the training wheels on, especially when said wheels come with an iron lung, NARCON pens, the cure for aids, plus 2 portable and easily accessible cannons for good measure.

I too want to compete, but I don’t want to do so with handicaps on both sides.

Why I PvP, and why I wish I PvP'd.

Now I have to give credit where it’s due, the team who initiated and completed the design of GW2 PvP were GODSENDS, they created a virtual playground with so many possibilities it is staggering. This combat system IS the best on the market, what it has been over-laid with is the bottom of the barrel and neglect; and it is a very real and very serious problem. This can been seen through the lack of PvP community this game has, where there aren’t even enough people in a queue to evenly distribute.

I will continue to play, albeit VERY sparingly, with 100% dedication to a “Sink or Swim” mentality. I will do my VERY best to make people question leaving their spawn or even better, question staying in the server, in the hope (there’s that word again) that change will take place, in a time frame that I may still have the dexterity to operate a keyboard/mouse.

Almost forgot to add why I wish I PvP’d; I wish it was because it was fun, because it was rewarding, because it fulfilled my competitive nature. I wish I PvP’d because the guild I came to GW2 with still played and played to win. And in closing, I wish I PvP’d because I wanted to be the best.

Now here’s the question I was asked, and will in turn ask others:
Why do you pvp?

WHY DO YOU PVP?

snip snip
I was going to write a novela, but I decided that it’s actually not worth it, I’ll put it plainly instead, though it will still be TL;DR worthy.

After the thousands and thousands and thousands of hours I’ve put into PvP, I now have regulated myself to play no more than 1 hour 3 nights a week, at most. Those 3 hours are spent in hotjoin and unranked (mainly because there is no reason to ever actually play ranked matches in this game and there is only 1 “supported” mode). What I do during those 3 hours, is search for new, average, and good players, kill them, and then farm them as they leave their spawn. The great players will slip passed me or force me to retreat, the amazing players (or AI) will kill me (if they can, “Stealth is a fun mechanic in this game – some guy 2014”).

Some players will whisper me nonsense that I don’t care about, like how it hurts the community, that I’m X Y and Z (and going to hell), etc. Some players will just leave. But tonight 1 player asked me a question. He asked me WHY I was doing it. At first I thought to myself, “Because I have nothing left to do in this game! I refuse to play the grindfest of brain-liquifying-ly easy PvE content! WvW is actually cancer in it’s realest form! And the current state of PvP has left me completely disenfranchised, disenchanted, and exceedingly skeptical of the capabilities of the people running ‘The Show!’”

What I found after writing it out, was that I just genuinely wanted to show some of what the game is capable of, eg; instant death via Shatter Mesmer. I want new players to understand that this is more than doing dailies. I want the average players to see that with effort comes reward. I want the good players to realize that they are capable of carrying entire teams through refinement and knowledge. I want the great players to challenge me and know that they too are strong players. And I want the amazing players to show me that I still have room for refinement and can improve. Unfortunately that just isn’t possible in this incarnation of PvP, there are TRULY CANCEROUS bugs, builds, and balance changes that range from; being here since early BETA (HELLO teleport bugs), to the refreshingly vile insurgence of meta builds that placate lesser skilled players through over-tuned numbers while in the hands of great or amazing players actually push entire professions out of viability.

What bothered me the most was not that they are there, it is that nothing was done about any of it in a manner that makes me believe, beyond a reasonable doubt, that the people making the changes are capable of bringing the latent potential underneath the grime and sludge into the light. Nothing but superficial band-aid repairs; or worse, completely game revolutionizing feature packs / “Balance Updates” that hurt the player the base (This would be the new trait and skill system that actually doesn’t provide a sense of “progression” like it was “intended” to, and is more accurately described as a “Gold Sink” or quick Gem sales, since you can in fact just purchase everything with your credit card) (and sigil/rune rework).

The base of the concepts behind the game regarding builds truly is groundbreaking stuff and the potential IS there; what I see now I don’t even have words for. Entire teams filled to the brim with Celestial Amulets and 25 stacks of might, specced completely into defense, and oozing with passive, overly spammable, non dynamic or avoidable (when applied by a player with understanding of the game), completely predictable and disgusting Area of Effect abilities; the majority of which apply conditions, and/or CC. And even WORSE, I see months, and months, and months, AND MONTHS, of this same cesspool churning people in and then OUT, with only the HOPE (Because were kept uninformed and ignorant) that it MIGHT change for the better.

dicrim. THe main think is that what your saying isn’t possible. Aside from lich form and flesh golem those are the only possible ways for you to be knocked around by a necro. Necros have a single pull that might have been it. But I kinda doubt it as youd notice being chilled.

The only possibility is that there was another enemy htere doing the knocking. Necros simply dont DO hard cc. its not there thing.

Skyhammer never gets 5 or more votes

Vicariuz.1605

Net never said anything about a majority. There’s a minority who likes it, and I agree with ANet in that it should not balance PvP around what only the majority likes. Every time I’m in que and Skyhammer is an option, at least 1 person votes for it. That’s 10%. That’s a lot, despite not being the majority.

I’m sure more than 10% want a lot of things that would genuinely help the game. Too bad those minorities are never listened to.

^ no idea how anyone is that unhappy about the upcoming patch. It was all good news to me.

Skyhammer is also not nearly as bad as people make it out to be, especially since the last update to skyhammer.

Then you clearly aren’t taking a good look at what’s about to hit. I’m not unhappy about the entire patch, just some very obvious flaws that are going to further hinder this game.

Vicariuz.1605

But then again what if skyhammer isn’t available in matched arena but available for selection in the unranked arenas. Since your combining solo and team why not just do that..

Because you are GOING to play skyhammer, and you are GOING to like it. The metrics say that people play on the map therefore they like it. It doesn’t matter that it has absolutely no place in the competitive scene, seeing as it’s already been removed from the queue. They removed Capricorn completely because “some people” didn’t like it, despite some people actually liking it, because instead of balancing their game they are going to take the easy way out every time, because there is so much work to be done on more important areas, like forcing you to play Skyhammer for no reason other than, because.

I’m playing until Dec 2, along with a ton of other people (the discussion has gone across quite a few guilds and friends lists), we will not play or support a game that tells us what is fun, simultaneously degrading TeamQ to that of the current SoloQ. No title or single piece of armor is going to change that either.

Question to devs about map voting

in PvP

Posted by: Vicariuz.1605

Vicariuz.1605

If you guys look at the metrics and see Skyhammer is clearly avoided once people can vote on it, will you consider doing something about it?

We’ve already done multiple things to the map based on community feedback, including making changes to the map, removing it from the tournament configuration rules, and from team arena.

If you’re asking if we’ll remove the map entirely? Probably not, not so long as some people prefer it.

And it is STILL the most hated map. But don’t worry it will be added BACK INTO rotation thanks to the new system.

Profession Swapping In New System?

in PvP

Posted by: Vicariuz.1605

Vicariuz.1605

I’m with the people who posted above on this. There is no reason to disallow profession swapping. It’s a perfectly valid tactical choice to punish an enemy team which has invested too heavily in an easily-countered profession. It seems that you’ve only chosen to disable it so you could enable your MMR-by-profession feature. Well, MMR-by-profession a neat idea, but I don’t think it’s necessary. The other improvements you’ve made to matchmaking should be enough to make matchmaking better. I confess, as someone who gets slaughtered every time I try a new build (because I get matched against people who are as skilled as I’ve gotten on my main), it would be nice to be able to slum it at a lower rank when playing something new, but since you’re introducing an unranked arena, that should be enough for people like me who have only started playing a warrior last week. I don’t want this enough to want to disable profession-swapping, and I doubt many other people do either – I don’t remember anyone raising this issue on the forums, so it’s not like this is a feature that many people think is necessary.

You may be right, but we’ll wait until we have actual data to look at. If the cost of having the feature out-weight the benefits we’d definitely be willing to change it. The new systems make this sort of thing much easier to do.

That said, I think character swapping mid game should be discouraged. Does anyone have an opinion on that?

Firmly against allowing character swap mid match, this isn’t hotjoin.

What?

The game was named after the Guild War a lore element that set the history of the world. It wasn’t named after GvG.

That IS guild versus guild though.

Gaile was not asking whether the promise of more LW is sufficient to sate our desires for intel, just whether it counts.

Yes, this is correct. When I see comments like “there’s nothing new to do” or “we need fresh content” it just occurred to me to ask if you’re taking LW into account, if you see that as new content and pretty significant chunks of it, at that. (Admittedly, it may not be what you personally have requested, but if the statement is “there’s nothing new” that doesn’t seem quite right.)

Thanks everyone for not barking at me when I asked the question. Again, the question was not “is it enough?” I really was pointing to it to ask for your impressions of the concept and the execution as continuing, new content in an ever-changing world.

If the content was added in the same way it was in gw1 I think a lot of aggression and dismay would end. Permanent content is what every one wishes for. If you are unable to do typical expansions and LW/LS are your current means of implementing the content that would otherwise be in a boxed expansion, then it needs to permanent, challenging, and profitable for the players. The current LS and LW combined isn’t even comparable to when Cantha came to be, It’s fun and all to play new stories for the lore, I love the lore of Tyria, it is extremely NOT fun to do so and still feel like it has impacted my character to a degree of ZERO. I sincerely believe that the memorialized areas and systems of gw1 need to be brought into this game. The changes that occur in gw2 feel so minuscule, the changes in gw1 were groundbreaking, and they were permanent.
When the game was being talked about before release, and I heard that events had direct effect on the areas around them, I was jaw dropped, THAT IS A REAL LIVING STORY WITHIN A GAME, when I realized that 10 minutes after I managed to save this village from being erased from the map that the enemies were respawned to do the exact same event chain again, I felt lied to, and I was definitely mad.

I came from gw1, I played it from release up until the day gw2 came out, along with other games, but primarily gw1. When I bought prophecies I was like cool this looks fun. The experience that I had leveling my first character was very engaging because it was new, new skills, new armor, new weapons, I felt like I was getting stronger and stronger. When I reached max level (and this is a very similar experience to playing gw2 from betas to 3 day headstart) I had already become engaged in the story, I had no idea where the story was leading me but I was willing to fight what ever battle I had to to get to the end. The missions and Economy were strong, Drok runs at release were very hard and cost a pretty penny but were so iconic that it made you want to continue learning the game so that you too could drok run. This also is talking about items, skins, that were rare (usually farmed from hard content ‘till heroes came around), but if you put in the effort and got good at the game you could become rich. This included PvP. Conquest simply CANNOT be the only game mode backed, I don’t think you realize how many people would come back simply to do 2v2 3v3 rated arena (deathmatch). There would have to some tough balancing decisions, I’m fairly certain that if the team were allowed to perform said decisions they could accomplish that in a respectable time frame.
I simply do not have the feeling of holding halls and /ranking my phoenix, along with 7 other people, as I open the chest (for all to see with spectator that had top 100 guild versus guild matches AND Heroes Ascent matches, or getting Gold Trim after practicing hours and hours with my team, coordinating different spikes on targets) when I play PvP at this time. I’m glad that their are teams of REALLY good players but the prestige looks and jaw dropping plays are not seen by the majority of the people playing when they win, in GW1 the winning team for HoH/HA would be broadcast across the screen/chat, people KNEW who Lulu the monk was, or Power Rangers, they saw their names next to “has won a battle in the Hall of Heroes, Northa America has favor of the Gods, the Underworld and Fissure of Woe have opened,” and could watch the high ranked high rated teams and get better at the game.
I remember when prophecies expanded, and then expanded again, and then again. Whole new stories to be told. My character continued to become stronger, while still being lvl 20. Entire new continents worth of armor and weapon skins. All the while I still felt alien because my main character was Ascalonion, not Kurzick or Vahbi. My other characters felt like they were from Shing Jea or remembers Koss fondly. There was identity, this game lacks identity. It has the root of something, but it’s just not clear what. I want to see some one walk buy and get jealous because his greatsword is so wicked that I look up how to get it and cry when it comes from chests found only in "X difficult map, where a team of 5 has to support each other to bring down the foes.
This game has a future, we just hope that your dreams of the future of Tyria are as profound as ours.

I just want to see a Necromancer and question myself if I want to fight or not because his armor and staff are so epic that I feel like I’m fighting Grenth himself, that armor takes a lot to get, and not just money. Or the complete opposite with a petite, cat eared, bubble gum pink, girl with rainbows and kitten (hehe ;]). But even then, I know that effort has been put in, I know that THAT player is also engaged in the game. There are a ton of avenues that could be taken to turn GW2 into that kind of experience, both PvE and PvP. The problem is that it seems currently the only way you are willing to give us anything is either through the gem store, or in very small pacifist “moment to moment”s or worse, not at all.

Don’t worry, as our servers are totally crap and can’t handle the traffic and calculations we intended it to have, we now heaped all responsibility to make this game run smoothly on the shoulders and machine of our customers.

As you were able at release to play the game on the suggested specs max settings , now you must revert to 1/2 or minor settings.

no biggy, thats how we roll in this company.

Oh and all the lag and rubber banding is also your connection not ours .. yes we don’t care if you run every other game on the planet fluently.. It must be your connection!

I remember loading in LA within 10 seconds.. now it’s 60-90 seconds to get to the second loading screen. that also takes another 60 seconds. and once loaded in .. you need to load the maps for another 30 seconds.

I’m so glad we are back to the 90’s.

There are sooo many places that they could add weapons to the main hand in this game that don’t exist already with some pretty useful skills if they took the time out to do it in a balance patch that it’s not even funny anymore. I like simplification as much as the next guy but let’s face it when you simplify too much you end up with a lack of diversity especially in PVE.

Waiting on the day that they recognize this and fixit.

Part 3 for the big part of the Ele

Elementalist Torch

Fire

1) Glowing Gaze > Burn your target foe and gain Might, if your Foe is already burning
2) Obsidian Flame > Deals unblockable armor ignoring Damage.
3) Savannah Heat > Creates a large AoE Zone, in which foes suffer damage over time if they stay in that area and move around.
4) Mind Burn > Burns the foe, if he has higher health than you, deals significant damage to burning foes and cures you of burning when you use this skill
5) Inferno > Create around yourself multiple spheres of fire, which explode after two seconds

Water

1) Glowing Ice > Chills foes and gain Health, if the foe was already chilled.
2) Rust > Makes all foes vulnerable in the ground target area and deals significant damage to chilled foes.
3) Mind Freeze > Chills foes, if they have higher health than you, freezes chilled foes making them unable to move for 3s and cures you of chill, when using this skill.
4) Ward of Stability > Creates a misty Area that prevents CC effects
5) Ward Against Harm > Creates a misty Area, which grants Protection

Air

1) Lightning Orb > Send out slow big Orbs of Lightning, that damage over time if you get to near to them and can catch you turning into a stun if they touch you
2) Shell Shock >Cause a big confusion onto your target, if the target suffers on more than 3 conditions
3) Mind Shock > Weakens foes if they have higher health than you. Deals significant damage to weakened foes. Cures you of weakness, if you use this skill.
4) Lightning Javelin > Throw a Lightning at your ground target, which dazes all foes in that area and deals damage, while also stun breaking allies in that area.
5) Blinding Surge > Blinds all foes in a large area around you and grants you vigor as also retaliation.

Earth

1) Glowstone > Makes foes vulnerable and gain Endurance, if that foe was already vulnerable.
2) Crystal Wave > Shoots out in a fan shape an array of crystals, that cause more bleedings, so shorter the range was until they hit, but they also cure therefore an other condition from foes.
3)Mind Petrification >Petrifies foes, if they have higher health than you and deals significant foes to CC’ed foes. Cures of of Petrification/works as Stun Break, if you use this skill.
4) Ash Blast > Shoots some ash, which cripples foes and has a small chance to also blind foes
5) Sliver Armor > Gain Retaliation and repell negative Conditions back to the source for the next 10s

Thank you for all of these I really like these ideas and think that anet should take a look at them too ur ideas are not op and I think would work really well with my characters.

Also I would like to ask your thoughts on rifle for mesmer since these ideas seem like they would work and rifle is a good weapon for mesmers to get.

Torches is something, that every clas should be able to wield in both hands.. as if it would require to have studied rocket science, just to be able to wield a torch (what is even at all no weapon, but just a tool)
I proposed some time ago also, that every Offhand Weapon in this Game should be wieldable in both hands. Id should play no role if a weapon is hold either in the left or the right hand. but it would give the game from the additional weapon skilsl just a bit for build variety for all classes

SNIP

Part 2

SNIP

Thief Torch

1) Twilight Shade> Flash Shadow Step to a target, damage and return to your old position in a matter of lightspeed, unless you cancel the return through moving around
2) Light the Darkness > Create a bright dazing light and get Stealth for the next 3 seconds, gaining vigor when you reappear
3) – Torch/Torch – Sun and Moon Strike > Attack your foe with both torches, creating a fire trail at your targets location and blind the foe with the second attack.
3) – Sword/Torch – Heat Blade > Strike your foe with a hot blade that hits all foes in line of sight
3) – Dagger/Torch > Burning Daggers > Throw a burning dagger, that bounces between up to 3 targets and burns them
3) – Torch/Dagger > Explosive Thrust > Leap at a target creating an explosion, that launches your nearby foes away from you
3) – Pistol/Torch > Flame Shot > Shoot a piercing bullet, that burns all foes and causes a high stack of vulnerability also.
3) – Torch/Pistol > Quick Assault > Shadow Step to your target, deal damage, remove a boon before, place a time bomb on your target and shadow step back, the bomb will explode after 3 seconds and deals serious damage, if the target doesnt before a dodge roll.
4) Throw Dynamite – Throw some Dynamite, that explodes and makes foes at the ground target vulnerable as also weakens them.
5) Treasure Hunter’s Sight > Hold the Torch up to reveal hidden foes. Grants you Might, Fury and Swiftness if you reveal a foe with it, otherwise you gain Fury only and regain some Endurance.
Stealth > Shadow Flare > Shoot the Target with unextinguishable Black Fire, which burns on the foe, until you die or you get the next time into stealth.

This is exactly the kind of forward thinking that needs to happen, this person understand that it is really important for thief to wield torches in both hands not only because it opens build diversity but it greatly help all our new players to have a better experience in gw2.

In D&D there is prestige shadow dancer class and this is very important to my thief character as she RP with this prestige class, torches would make great for her to use this light to make better shadows to step in and out of. Now you know why we will need this in our game.

I’ve had enough of your garbage engine and its inability to process projectiles. I’ve had enough of using an ability in melee range and it saying obstructed, or missed, or going on cd for absolutely no reason.

Seriously, take the time to get your game out of alpha.

edit: not too much time though, there seems to be plenty of that going on already.

You have boon strip and you kill cele ele. The build is good but not OP. You take out their might stack and its game over for cele ele.

So the only counter to this d/d celestial is to use an ability that hardly any class have?.. thats balance alright lmao

I have heard those type of arguments before in other competitive games, just bcuz something has a really situational counter doesn’t mean its “balanced”

Why don't we have a 2v2 or 3v3 game mode?

It’s already in the game, there are tons of 1v1 dueling servers you can join. Splitting the already small populace into 1v1 2v2 3v3 5v5 soloq tq hj is a bad idea.

i want to see how well you do against players who know their class if you just “slobber your face across the keyboard”

yeah and what happens when I or X pro player actually tries, if this build is capable of what it is WITHOUT trying. Hmmmm…

Bring your ele against my condi ranger. youre gonna be toast. stop playing hotjoin and thinking youre good. that is all.

1v1 me brah i show u my true skill brah! Good and useless argument. Who cares about me rolling hotjoins, absolutely hysterical, genuinely crying with laughter, gagging because I can’t breathe. Completely missing the point.

How many of you are also running this completely braindead quadriplegic spec, it’s so easy I can’t stand it, I literally gave myself cramps from laughing as i slobbered my face across my keyboard and just fire/poison everything around me to death.

So how many of us are there?

Is this game worth getting into now?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Vicariuz.1605

Vicariuz.1605

Yes.

Guild Wars 2 has a lot to offer, especially considering what it costs, and the developers are still working hard on the game and most likely will for a long time.

ArenaNet released a feature pack not too long ago, which reminded a lot of people to go complain on the forums that it wasn’t a content pack. Then again, you’ll probably find that a lot of players on these forums complaining that more dungeons aren’t being outputted faster than they can play through them.

As of right now, we’re still kind of in post-patch adjustment & bug fixing time so there might be a few issues, but those are undoubtedly being worked on, and we’ll continue seeing changes in the weeks to come.

Either way, this game is definitely worth getting into. I know I’ve been having a ton of fun playing the game for two years now, and that’s what’s important. Besides, no other MMORPG I’ve heard of has ever come close to having as much diversity as Guild Wars 2 has to offer, or at least, not for free.

There is no dungeon team whatsoever, I think that’s a valid complaint considering.

Remove Skyhammer from tournament matchup.

Vicariuz.1605

FYI – Situational awareness will still be important with the changes coming to Skyhammer.

please give us anet’s definition of situational awareness, cuz im pretty sure it will be exceedingly different than every person who plays the game.

Situational awareness does not even currently exist in the map, because you are either able to get out of hammer radius, or u aren’t, and if you aren’t and are playing anything other than heavy armor, a bunker, and/or an engi, you die. Ontop of that, the map pigeon holes you into what classes you can play, if you intend to play to win.

I’m genuinely glad that they spent the time to make a map, but the definitive factor being “fun” when you are forcing a map into a competitive mode is asinine. “BALANCE” should be the priority, with “fun” second place to it.

Play spvp. Hotjoin is meant for ppl waiting in queue.

That isn’t really a solution because tournies suffer their own annoyances that have yet to be resolved. Being autobalanced by team hoppers only to get into a tPvP match with 4v5 and getting smashed there doesn’t sound appealing.

go into tpvp with a full group then…
